FORD SYNC APPLINK GIVES DRIVERS VOICE CONTROL OF SMARTPHONE APPS SYNC AppLink, which Ford will demo at CES in North Hall booth 301, is a downloadable software program for the Ford SYNC in-car connectivity system that gives drivers hands-free, voice-activated control of popular smartphone apps while on the road— no additional hardware, system complexity

or costs involved. With AppLink, SYNC is the only in-car connectivity system that eliminates the need to pick up the phone while driving to access your favorite app, seamlessly integrating control of the app using SYNC’s voice recognition system and steering wheel buttons. Motorists can

enjoy their apps while driving, but at the same time keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. AppLink leverages a SYNC Application Programming Interface (API) to access mobile apps stored on the user’s smartphone for control through SYNC. The API has been created in conjunction with a related software development kit (SDK). The first SYNC-enabled apps were developed for Android and BlackBerry smartphones and include Pandora Internet radio, Stitcher “smart Radio” and Orangatame’s OpenBeak app for Continued on Page 61

RESULTS OF TWO NEW CLINICAL STUDIES SHOW PROMISE OF EMERGING MOBILE HEALTH TECHNOLOGY TO COMBAT OBESITY EPIDEMIC Latest Research Reinforces Body Monitoring Devices As A Reliable And Accurate Way To Increase Weight Loss Success WASHINGTON–As obesity rates and the cost of health care continue to be on the rise, the 2010 mHealth Summit in Washington, D.C. brought together industry thought leaders, researchers, and policy makers to discuss the opportunities to address pressing public health issues utilizing mobile health technology. BodyMedia Inc., the pioneer in developing wearable body monitoring systems, recently announced the findings from two clinical studies that yielded promising results showcasing body monitoring devices’ integral role in the current public health dialogue. The first study, published in November in the Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise Journal, revealed results from one of the first studies to validate the accuracy of the BodyMedia Armband technology in real-world conditions. The study, conducted by Dr. Greg Welk, of Iowa State University and researchers at Pennington Biomedical

Research Center, showed that BodyMedia Armband monitors were more than 90 percent accurate in measuring calorie expenditure in adults compared to doubly-labeled water over the course of 14 days. The promising results reinforce that BodyMedia provides a solution to the need for accurate devices to measure daily energy expenditure in a real-world setting. On top of the finding that BodyMedia’s products are accurate and suitable for real-world situations, the ninemonth results from a study conducted by Dr. Steven Blair of the Arnold School of Public Health at USC were presented at the Convergence & Society Meeting at the University of South Carolina and showed the success of adding the BodyMedia Armband technology to promote weight loss in overweight and obese adults. The nine-month clinical study by Blair, which included 197 participants, showed that combining a lifestyle intervention program and a body monitoring device tripled their weight loss. Participants in the study who were Continued on Page 92

NEW TECHNOLOGY GOES HEAD-TOHEAD WITH DISTRACTED DRIVING With Thousands Of Accidents Per Year, TASER® International Looks To New Technology To Make The Change Whether you’re a parent, teacher or just someone who watches the news, chances are you already know that distracted driving has become more than just a problem. With nearly 6,000 people killed every year in America due to cell phone usage while driving, the situation is headed to an epidemic level. In an effort to combat this problematic situation, legislators and companies alike have recognized the need for a unified national effort to create broad-reaching social awareness of the dangers while also implementing innovative technologies that force behavioral changes. TASER International, a global leader in the development of safety technologies, is taking a lead in the fight, through its development of technology and national outreach programs to youth and law enforcement. Looking to empower national behavioral changes, the company is bringing people together through hosting various panels, youth summits and industry association meetings, in an effort to build a unified front that raises the current awareness level of the epidemic and how it can in fact, be stopped. Unfortunately, there is no “silver bullet” to solve this problem. It will require both the creation of a social stigma around the act of distracted driving, as well as technology solutions that remove the temptation and help enforce the new rules of the road. With this in mind, TASER International has added a new dimension to their plans to curb distracted

driving with the development of their newest family safety platform, the Protector™ safe driver system. New to the category, TASER’s system is a combination of easy-to-use vehicle installed hardware, cell-phone installed software, and an online monitoring and reporting platform that allows families the ability to take control while in the car. Once in place, any time a phone with the distraction management software is in a running vehicle, functionality of the phone is shut down. In addition to cutting down communication, the Protector safe driver system responds to phone calls and texts for the driver, letting callers know the person is focused on driving and will respond to them when full attention can be given. A different take on safe driving technology, the system offers the ability for the monitoring and reporting platform to communicate directly with both the software and hardware system components. This allows the platform to alert a parent or designated contact if there is a failure with any part of the system, while also being able to provide you critical information such as letting you know if there has been a collision or where the vehicle is located if it’s been stolen. Through its efforts to raise awareness and educate the public along with the release of Protector safe driver system, TASER International is leading the charge on all fronts in the fight against distracted driving. GREAT AUDIO MADE AFFORDABLE WITH ETYMOTICʼS IMPROVED MOVING-COIL DRIVER TECHNOLOGY Etymotic Research, the original inventor of noise-isolating, high-fidelity in-ear earphones, showcases the new mc-series of earphones and headsets at CES booth 4018 in the iLounge Pavilion–North Hall. The company is actively seeking distribution partners and authorized dealers. Etymotic’s new Accu·Chamber™ technology applies a patent-pending,

response-shaping process that corrects known defects of moving coil (dynamic) drivers. Etymotic uses an acoustic side branch that redistributes acoustic energy to smooth undesirable response peaks and compensates for the weak highfrequency response that is characteristic of dynamic drivers. The result is excellent sound quality at lower cost.

UBUNTU HAS CHANGED THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT LINUX Mark Shuttleworth, Founder, explains Ubuntu One. Shuttleworth founded the Ubuntu project in 2004 and continues to serve as an active member of the Technical Board and the Community Council. He works with product teams at Canonical on strategy and user experience as the V.P. of Product Design and Strategy. Ubuntu has changed the world’s perception of Linux, both in the breadth of the hardware support but more importantly in ease of use. It has become known as “Linux you can share with your family and friends” and has the stated mission of delivering a beautiful, easy-to-use and fully functional free desktop to a global consumer audience. More recently, he has been leading the design of a new interface for Ubuntu called Unity, which will be shown at CES, and championing touch and gesture interfaces for open source applications. CEDN: Mark, what brings you to CES? MS: This year we are presenting Ubuntu Light, a dual-boot interface for installation alongside Windows, Ubuntu One, a suite of services delivered straight to desktop users, and Ubuntu on ARM, cutting the time to market of ARM Linux devices. CEDN: Can you elaborate on Touch?

MS: In consumer and desktop environments, touch and gestures will become a standard part of the interface. Ubuntu 11.04 will make more use of gestures in specific applications and include basic touch support in every app. Canonical is leading the development of a set of touch and gesture management libraries, called uTouch. CEDN: What is Ubuntu One? MS: Ubuntu One is your personal cloud. But it’s not just about syncing files—whether you need to access your contacts, notes or bookmarks from any computer or the Web, enjoy your favorite music from a cloud integrated store or stream your entire collection to iPhone and Android mobile phones, Ubuntu One forms the backbone of a set of services from Canonical and thirdparty developers. CEDN: And Ubuntu Light? MS: Ubuntu Light is streamlined for a fast Web experience in dual-boot or embedded devices. Typical start-up times Continued on Page 49

VAPOR CORP CELEBRATES COURT RULING: FDA LOSES APPEAL, CANʼT REGULATE E-CIGARETTES AS A DRUG On Dec. 7, 2010, Vapor Corp. (OTCBB:VPCO) was delighted to announce a significant victory for the electronic cigarette industry. A U.S. federal appeals court found that as long as electronic cigarettes aren’t marketed as a way to treat or cure a disease, i.e., smoking cession aids, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration lacks the authority to regulate these products under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (“FDCA”), and has no authority to block the importation of these electronic cigarette products. “Together, Brown and Williamson and the Tobacco Act establish that the FDA cannot regulate customarily marketed tobacco products under the FDCA’s drug/device provisions, that it can regulate tobacco products marketed for therapeutic purposes under those provisions, and that it can regulate customarily marketed tobacco products under the Tobacco Act. Of course, in the event that Congress prefers that the FDA regulate e-cigarettes under the FDCA’s drug/device provisions, it can always so decree,” the Court declared. “We are extremely pleased with this court ruling,” said Kevin Frija, President and CEO of Vapor Corp. “The ruling finally resolves any lingering doubt which has challenged the electronic industry for quite some time now. Vapor Corp. has always been proactive in taking many steps to ensure the responsible marketing of our electronic cigarettes. NRG Energy (Con’t. from p. 1)

electricity—air-conditioning, appliances and electric vehicles—will be connected to a home energy network enabled by consumer-focused smart energy solutions tied to the smart electric grid. In this smart energy home, Americans will have maximum convenience and unprecedented information, insight and control over how and when they purchase and use energy. The true heart of the smart-energy future will be in the humble garage where an electric vehicle and its charger will serve as the home’s back-up power supply, helping to manage electricity needs and meeting the family’s personal transportation requirements. You don’t need to wait around until the end of the decade to live that vision— you can see it today at CES. NRG is demonstrating how smart energy solutions for consumers, the broad adoption of electric vehicles, and low-carbon and renewable generation are making that new energy future possible—right now. Electrifying our transportation system will cut our dependence on imported oil, increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Smart energy solutions will allow consumers to be active participants rather than passive recipients in the energy network in their towns, their states and across the country. Both will increasingly be powered by lower-carbon alternatives like wind, solar, nuclear, biomass and distributed generation. Reliant Energy, an NRG company that is one of the largest competitive

Vapor Corp. is the industry leader for electronic cigarettes, and we have been working diligently to enter into very visible distribution channels across the United States. With today’s legal victory, we are best positioned among our competitors to quickly capture an even greater market share for our products,” added Frija. About Vapor Corp. Vapor Corp., is a marketer and distributor of electronic cigarettes, whose brands include Fifty-One, Krave, EZ Smoker, Green Puffer, and Smoke Star brands. Electronic cigarettes are electronic devices that vaporize a liquid solution, which simulate a smoking experience without the burning of tobacco, and as such, no smoke or noxious odor is dispelled from the device. electricity retailers in Texas (the most energy-intensive state in the nation) is showcasing e-SenseTM, a suite of smart energy solutions available today that helps consumers make informed energy decisions about how they buy and use electricity, and put those decisions into action. The mobile part of the vision is eVgoSM, the nation’s first privately funded, comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. NRG launched eVgo in Houston in November and will roll it out across Texas in 2011. eVgo will provide electric vehicle owners with convenient and affordable “home-and-away” fueling in an “unlimited miles” package, offering unlimited mobility at a fixed price for EV drivers. Powering all of this is a national generation portfolio including more and more low-carbon generation like new advanced nuclear generators and modern carboncapture equipped plants powered by domestic natural gas, along with expanded renewable generation, especially solar. From the planned expansion of the South Texas Project nuclear power station to Ivanpah, the largest concentrated solar generation project in the nation, to the California Valley Solar Ranch, one of the largest photovoltaic projects in the world, NRG is working—right now, across the United States—to transform our energy future, to move energy usage in our country from the age of Edison to the age of electronic enlightenment. Consumer Electronics Daily News

THE SILENT KILLER OF ELECTRONICS Every day we hear about some new toy or gadget ranging from the latest cell phone—oops, smartphone—to iPads and 3D televisions, and the list goes on and on. While many of the smaller gadgets are virtually disposable, components that drive our high definition—and soon to be 3D—world are not so easily replaced. We expect these components to provide trouble-free entertainment for years to come or at least until the next must-have component comes out. Since home theater has become so commonplace, most everyone has these systems tucked away in an entertainment center, cabinet or remote closet somewhere in the home. Having that ‘clean’ look in the home is great―all of that technology is present but not in your face. It does however come with some challenges, such as how to control the components. There is, however, one issue that does not get the attention it merits. If you have your components

neatly hidden away, then you may have already experienced this issue which can cause your equipment to malfunction or worse, stop working altogether. The culprit is heat, and it is slowly killing components that are installed in tight spaces without proper ventilation. It wasn’t long ago when everyone was proud to display their components, especially that new reel to reel, but today, people don’t want to see their components and while this may simply be the wife getting her way (again), the fact is that tucking them away and closing the door on them restricts airflow and leads to both short- and long-term heat issues. In the short term, components can become unresponsive or, if they are equipped with thermal protection, they will simply shut down until they cool off. Of course this usually happens in the middle of the big Super Bowl party but, with a little knowledge and the right

POWERGENIXʼS NIZN BATTERIES NON-TOXIC AND SAFE FOR USERS Nanci Bergman, Director of Consumer Sales, PowerGenix, talks about eco-friendly batteries.

provide the power level of a high-performance disposable battery with the environmental benefits of rechargeables. In short, they’re the best of both battery worlds.

CEDN: So, I hear that PowerGenix makes rechargeable, eco-friendly batteries for consumer applications. Tell me a little bit about the technology behind your batteries, and what makes them innovative?

CEDN: OK, so how do your batteries perform compared to the competition?

NB: PowerGenix created a rechargeable Nickel-Zinc [NiZn] battery for consumer and commercial/industry applications. NiZn is the first new battery chemistry offered to consumers in over 20 years, which is strange when you think about it―all the electronics that use batteries have changed so much but the batteries haven’t evolved. We’ve gone from the Walkman to advanced portable gaming and digital cameras with essentially the same batteries. In addition to offering more power, our NiZn batteries are completely non-toxic and safe. Because of their 1.6 volt power output, PowerGenix’s NiZn batteries are one of the first rechargeable batteries capable of replacing disposable [single-use] batteries, which means a big reduction in e-waste. We’re proud to offer a cleaner environmental alternative to previously available rechargeable batteries. The technology is non-toxic, so it’s safe in your home and easier to dispose. CEDN: NiZn sounds interesting, but I wonder if you can provide some insight into why consumers should consider rechargeable batteries in general.

NB: Our batteries provide distinct advantages over standard rechargeable batteries due to the higher voltage in a single cell―1.6V in NiZn versus 1.2V in Nickel-Metal Hydride or NickelCadmium. The higher voltage means that the most demanding consumer electronic devices, which currently rely on singleuse lithium and alkaline batteries [which offer 1.5V], can now be powered reliably with rechargeable NiZn. CEDN: Sounds like a good deal to me! With what kind of devices do you recommend using these batteries? NB: We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about PowerGenix batteries’ performance in devices ranging from digital cameras to GPS units to handheld game controllers. Basically, any high-drain, demanding consumer electronic device is a good candidate for a PowerGenix battery. Because of the high voltage level, our batteries provide optimal performance throughout their lives―it’s like the difference between using high octane gasoline in your car and regular unleaded.

NB: Rechargeable batteries provide a lower total cost of ownership over the product lifetime. And, they’re also a better choice for the environment, reducing the number of batteries that end up in landfills.

For example, a lot of photographers use PowerGenix batteries because their increased power translates to brighter, faster flashes. PowerGenix AA batteries also have a much shorter recharge time than traditional rechargeables, which benefits active photographers. Not only will their cameras work faster but when the batteries do drain out, they can be recharged in about an hour.

Specifically, PowerGenix’s batteries are the best choice for consumers because they

products, it’s a problem that is easily prevented. The long-term issue is that excessive heat can drastically shorten the life of a component. Cooling does not generate a “buzz” like other gadgets do but like surge protection, it should be an integral part of every “installed” technology system. In many cases where components are in a cabinet or closet, it can be as simple as adding a fan to exhaust the hot air. The primary goal is to just get air moving and not to focus too much on CFMs or BTUs. Simply consider how air will move through the cabinet or closet and around the components. It does not take a lot of airflow to adequately cool components but it does require air effectively flowing around the components.

49

The first step is to ensure proper spacing between components and shelves and, whenever possible, do not stack components and ensure air flows freely between shelving. Next, have an escape for hot air through the top of the cabinet. To start, you can try to just use a passive grill to vent the air. If you find you need active cooling, replace the passive grill with a fan-based cooling unit and then reevaluate the system. If additional cooling is required, consider adding a spotcooling device to individually protect the amplifiers and/or home theater receivers in the system. The bottom line is that heat is a silent killer when it comes to electronics but it is preventable. For a variety of thermal solutions, visit Cool Components in South Hall booth 21570 or visit their website at www.coolcomponents.com. Cool Components offers the most comprehensive line of cooling and ventilation solutions for cabinets, closets and equipment racks and has solutions for both residential and commercial applications.

JILL-E DESIGNS, MAKER OF BAGS FOR TODAYʼS TECH-SAVVY ON-THEGO LIFESTYLE, EXPANDING ITS RETAIL CHANNEL A growing jill-e designs, well established and widely known around the world, has set its sights on an expanded retail presence in the U.S. The maker of fashionable, functional camera and carry bags for today’s technology-dependent, on-the-go lifestyle is attending CES in part for the purpose of establishing an even broader-based retail channel. “As so often happens, consumer interest is ahead of the market, and that’s the case with our bags,” said Jill Wight, President of jill-e designs. “The number of ‘hits’ we’re getting on our website, which has been growing steadily, and our increasing sales through photo specialty stores proves that. Our challenge now, and the challenge for the larger players in the

retail market, is to satisfy the demand for our products by continuing to pursue a broadbased retail presence that puts jill-e designs’ products as close to as many consumers as possible in as many markets as possible. We’ve steadily been growing our network, and we’ll build on it further during our time at CES.” A concerted effort to identify and develop relationships with additional retailers and distributors will be complemented by an exhibit of the latest in fashionable, functional camera and carry bags for today’s fast-paced, tech-savvy lifestyle—including a messenger-style shoulder bag with interchangeable

LEAN&ZOOMʼS INTUITIVE AUTO-MAGNIFICATION TOOLS PROVIDE ERGONOMIC RELIEF TO THE DIGITALLY INCLINED The size and resolution of computer displays has increased dramatically, allowing more information than ever to be rendered on-screen. However, items can now be so small or screens so cluttered that users often need to lean forward to properly examine them. While this leaning behavior is common during normal computer use, it is often enacted unconsciously by the end user, resulting in unwanted eye or neck strain. Enter Lean&Zoom—the first commercial product to emerge from The Quality of Life Technology Center and Foundry at Carnegie Mellon University. The Lean&Zoom technique examined by Human Computer Interaction researcher, Chris Harrison, has resulted in a computer application that automatically zooms

the user interface display in response to its viewer’s body movements. It works like this: People naturally lean towards items to better inspect them. Lean&Zoom simply leverages this intuitive human behavior as an input signal. Lean&Zoom detects user proximity to a computer display using a camera. Then, in response to intuitive lean-motion gestures, Lean&Zoom magnifies on-screen content proportionally. With Lean&Zoom, users can alleviate detrimental and long-term effects to posture and eyesight by reducing how far and how often leaning is required. Dramatic lean gestures are also minimized, while on-screen items become more regularly and readily readable. “Zoom level” is controlled by

Most people who buy large pieces of property want privacy. They don’t want to light themselves and their neighbors up at night with banks of security lights. These lights may deter intruders, but they have their disadvantages as well. And, there are many areas―especially along waterfronts and wetlands―where installing an effective lighting infrastructure is prohibitively expensive and may even be illegal. When people think of security cameras they can use around the house, they often conjure up thoughts of cheap, low-light cameras that produce grainy, pixelated images during the day and shapeless, indistinct blobs at night. Many of these “security” cameras don’t work much better than the camera in your average cell phone. But F-Series thermal security cameras from FLIR Systems are different. FLIR’s affordable thermal security cameras give homeowners crystal-clear imagery that lets them know if someone

is on their property 24 hours a day. F-Series thermal security cameras let you see what your eyes can’t: invisible heat radiation emitted by all objects regardless of lighting conditions. Thermal cameras detect the minute temperature differences between objects, and turn them into video that you can watch on almost any TV monitor. Because they see heat, not light, thermal cameras are effective security tools in any environment. They can easily detect intruders and other potential threats to the security of your home and

calculating the user’s lean position from inputs provided by a computer vision system—such as the cameras typically already integrated on today’s laptops or computer monitors. Magnification of the user interface is system-wide and directly proportional to the extent of the user’s lean: in other words, the greater the user leans, the greater his or her magnification. The Lean&Zoom application can be set for low-zoom gain; however, for regular use, a high-zoom gain would likely be desired to achieve optimal speed and performance. Once zoomed in to a comfortable level, the mouse is used to pan around the screen. The magnification that was formerly provided by being physically closer to an item can now expose otherwise unseen details with minimal effort. Semantic zooming applications are also made possible whereby a user can add detail to screen content incrementally as a response to family day and night, in good weather and bad. Thermal security cameras are an affordable option for any homeowner with a security system, and they do more than just let you see at night. With a thermal camera, homeowners can see into those dark, shadowy nooks and crannies that are common around house entrances and garages, giving their families that added piece of mind that comes from knowing that there isn’t anyone lurking next to their front door. With thermal cameras, homeowners can watch over their property in ways that visible-light cameras can’t, seeing

HIFONICS ANNOUNCES BRICK AND MORTAR ONLY BRUTUS ELITE SERIES Maxxsonics USA announced today that the new Hifonics Brutus BRE (Elite) Amplifier Series is available for order at the 2011 WCES. Ted Henricks, V.P. Sales and Marketing, said, “The Hifonics Brutus BRE Series is a complete line of our famous Brutus Super D-Class mono blocks with the addition of three A/B stereo amplifiers. They are available in the most popular power configurations. Most importantly, they represent a new direction for Maxxsonics as a company; they are under a controlled distribution

plan that does not allow Internet sales. In addition, we have a controlled purchase program whereas a distributor is limited to the amount of product they can fill their pipeline. In addition, pricing to the customer and the minimum advertised price will be strictly enforced. Price erosion hurts everyone; we are clearly in a new stage of retail resurgence and the need for proper product demonstration. Our core distributors and dealers are in agreement with this program.” The new Brutus BRE Series is available in Hifonics’ most requested power

EXPANDING COOLING BUSINESS REFLECTS GROWING CONCERNS ABOUT ʻHIDDEN SIDEʼ OF ELECTRONICS

“When we do a job, even if it’s a simple one, I’d say 95 percent of them probably need or have some kind of cooling requirement,” said Keith Sheppard, President of Sheppard Security and Communication, a Florida-based installer. “I don’t know how many times I’ve gone into a house and the cabinet doors are propped open because it’s overheating.” Sheppard said that the Florida-based Cool Components, with its wide array of cooling solutions, is probably the leading innovator in the industry to date. “You go on their website and they’ve got a solution for everything. And if they don’t they usually come up with something. They’ve got the cooling thing licked,” Sheppard said. “You notice that they’ll introduce a product and then the next year other companies will have a very similar product.” Cooling can be a delicate task because it involves working with the elements of someone‘s home, Sheppard said. “We’ve had jobs like a custom-built cabinet, and the customer’s like, ‘I don’t want any holes drilled in it.’ Cool Components have got a pretty tasteful solution for just about everything,” he said. Kattan agreed with Sheppard’s assessment. “Cool Components were able to offer us solutions that not only are

efficient but also extremely quiet and well-designed to be integrated in living areas in an elegant way,” Kattan said. “We’ve been extremely aggressive since we entered the market,” said David Lee, President of Cool Components, which is making its CES debut this year. “In the past we had been fairly conservative with our sales efforts, mainly because we were focused more on product and market development. Now we have reached our goals in those areas, so we’re stepping up our sales efforts and are ready to attack the market and be the primary cooling provider.” The growth of the cooling industry is no accident; it’s the natural product of a changing world, Lee said. More complex systems have created a niche that companies like his are rushing to fill, he added. “Systems are getting bigger and bigger,” Lee said. “You have not only computers that are getting more and more powerful, but now computers are being installed with your media servers. You have distributed audio systems, which means you need a lot more amplification. Amplification equals heat. Now you’re putting all of that heat in a closet or a cabinet.” Lee said the time is ripe for cooling

for home theater applications, musical instruments and car entertainment will be on show at CES’ High Performance Audio and Home Theater exhibit suites, The Venetian Towers, Suite 30-332. “With a reputation for showcasing the latest innovations in international consumer electronics, CES is the ideal venue

for IR to demonstrate its leading-edge power management solutions for Class D Audio,” said Adam White, IR’s Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales. With more than four decades of success, the International CES reaches

By Justyn Dillingham In the world of electronic equipment, more advanced systems demand more energy expenditure. But energy creates heat, and too much heat can spell disaster for a sensitive system. The cooling industry, epitomized by burgeoning companies like Cool Components and Active Thermal Management, is based around the growing awareness that ventilation and equipment-cooling are becoming an essential part of electronics. “I believe as technology continues to evolve and the capabilities keeps growing, the equipment to support it is getting more and more sophisticated and therefore heat-generating,” said Eyal Kattan, President of Media Nexus, a Georgiabased company which specializes in integrating high-end entertainment systems into a home. “Take, for example, the Xbox 360. When you put all these ‘boxes’ together in one rack or a cabinet,

you definitely going to need a cool way to cool them off.” System cooling techniques vary, ranging from ventillating a cabinet to installing fans. Kattan said that his company looks at three factors when strategizing how to cool a system: heat, noise and aesthetics. A cooling system should be designed to interrupt the lives of the home’s occupants—via noise or visual distractions— as little as possible, he said. “Sometimes we are required to install cooling devices in exposed areas that are located in high-visability areas and the cooling system must be blended with the rest of the décor,” Kattan said. Kattan said he thinks cooling will become increasingly integrated into the world of electronic equipment, eventually becoming a familiar part of an installer’s job. “Tthe more efficient and quieter they become, the easier and more plausible it would be to include them in every project,” he said.

POWERMAX INTRODUCES NEW LED FLASHLIGHTS AND BATTERY Neville Lin, President of Powermax USA, a leading battery company in private label and value brand manufacturer, talks about his company. CEDN: We noted that your booth is located in the ‘Sustainable Planet’ section of this year’s CES Show. How are your batteries ‘green?’ NL: We have responded to the ‘green’ initiative with our new ‘Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries’ and a ‘Green Alkaline’ with no mercury, no cadmium and no lead. CEDN: You mention the new ‘PreCharged Rechargeable Batteries;’ what is

the benefit of these? NL: All of our Insta-Use Pre-Charged Rechargeable products are made of 100 percent recyclable materials, including the packaging and battery itself [no mercury, no cadmium and no lead], thus creating a complete earth-friendly line of battery products in an effort to reduce battery disposal waste in landfills. Using one rechargeable battery can keep thousands of alkaline batteries from being disposed in landfills each year, and our ACDelco Insta-Use Pre-Charged batteries hold their charge longer than standard rechargeables. DATAPIPE OUTLINES KEY CLOUD COMPUTING TRENDS FOR 2011 Enterprise Adoption, SLAs, Automation And Governance Will Lead To Continued Growth For Cloud Computing Datapipe, a global leader of managed services and infrastructure for IT and cloud computing, on Dec. 15 outlined three key cloud computing trends for 2011. The company sees major trends for the coming year including the increased adoption to cloud computing by large enterprise organizations, increased market demand and delivery of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for guaranteed performance and reliability,

and improved automation and governance that moves cloud computing beyond raw infrastructure to solve specific business domain challenges. “What was once considered an unknown technology surrounded by lots of hype is now revolutionizing IT,” said Ed Laczynski, Datapipe’s Vice President for Cloud Strategy and Architecture. “The reality is, we’ve only scratched the surface of what is possible in the cloud and during 2011 we will see significant advancements that will drive stronger adoption and value from the entire cloud computing ecosystem.”

manufacturing. Where do you see the battery industry trend going? National brand vs. private label? NL: National brands continue to spend promotional dollars to increase their market share and compete with both value and own brand programs. Consumers will search for best value, given the economic climate and our NBE quality the trend will continue. CEDN: How does your Powermax/ACDelco and private label brands fit today’s retailers’ needs? NL: Retailers need to differentiate their own brand programs with unique segments, sizes and promotions. Powermax USA offers solutions to create excitement, traffic and most importantly value. CEDN: I also heard that you are going to Looking to 2011 Datapipe sees three key trends that will impact the cloud computing landscape: Household Names Will Make Big Cloud Decisions While enterprise adoption of cloud computing progressed in 2010, 2011 will be the year when industry giants from across the spectrum—including major financial institutions, pharmaceuticals and retailers—will migrate major internal and external IT systems to the cloud. Moving beyond the “dev/test” and “R&D” use cases, more projects will be deployed to include mainstream and mission-critical IT applications and services. This adoption will be spurred by advancements in security, compliance, and the availability of new managed cloud offerings that

Enterprise Grade SLAs As the cloud computing delivery model matures, more enterprises will demand the same types of service level agreements that they currently rely on from vendors delivering more traditional IT services. Robust SLAs around full solution availability, performance and incident response will allow more customers to trust mission-critical and productionlevel systems to cloud computing. The growing cloud ecosystem will continue to spawn a new class of products and services that help customers manage and govern SLA compliance. Continued on Page 92

WHAT DOES 2011 HOLD FOR THE E-WASTE INNOVATOR WERECYCLE! VIDEO GAME ACCESSORIES MARKET? FILES APPLICATION TO SERVE CONSUMER ELECTRONICS By Chris Arbogast, Director of address the needs of a refreshed console, Marketing, Nyko Technologies or add a requested feature to an already MANUFACTURERS UNDER popular product. Historically, the videogame accessories NEW YORK STATEʼS NEW LAW market booms with the launch of a new The Consoles Aren’t New, console. New consoles mean new controllers and peripherals to go with them. The current-generation console lifecycle is lasting longer than any console lifecycle in the past, suggesting a down year for game accessories. However, interesting new developments and innovative business strategies will help the agile peripherals company flourish in 2011. A Refreshing Time Of Year Traditionally, the game console lifecycle has lasted five years, but today’s consoles are entering their fifth and sixth years on shelves amidst a slow economy. Since we don’t anticipate any consoles to be released this year, we have to think creatively and provide new accessories for the existing game systems. For Nyko this means refreshing our most popular products with new features and improvements. We’re introducing things like the Charge Base 360 S and Intercooler STS this year, which either

But Everything Else Is The introduction of Wii Motion Plus, Sony Move and Microsoft Kinect have breathed new life into the current-gen consoles. Each of these new gesture or motion-based technologies presents a unique opportunity to innovate beyond first-party product design. On the Wii, Nyko was first to market with the Wand+, the first Wii controller to integrate Full Motion Technology into the remote itself. Now with Move and Kinect, consumers are showing a willingness to purchase whole new sets of controllers and cameras, and literally rearrange their living room just to meet the space demands of these new systems. With these investments, we believe consumers will also be willing to spend on accessories like charging docks and other value-add peripherals that help them get Continued on Page 72

Pioneering electronic waste recycler WeRecycle! has filed with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to collect and process ewaste on behalf of consumer electronics and computer companies under the state’s new Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act. The law obligates electronics manufacturers to take responsibility for safe disposal of their products. WeRecycle! offers the most economic and environmentally responsible compliance option for electronics manufacturers that are required to either set up their own collection systems or sign up with a stateapproved “collective” e-waste provider. Collection networks must be fully operational in every county, and in each municipality with a population of more than 10,000 people no later than April 1, 2011. The company is among the largest electronics recyclers in New York state, and one of the fastest growing and most experienced in the nation. WeRecycle! is widely recognized for its sophisticated

sorting technologies, which separates electronics into clean, high-value commodity streams. These proprietary, stateof-the-art systems also facilitate better and more accurate reporting under increasingly stringent regulatory requirements. “We handle the entire process inhouse to make sure it’s done right and fully documented. Our process protects consumers from a data security breach, and we insure that all equipment is processed domestically,” said WeRecycle! President Mick Schum. “That means our customers get the unassailable accountability and complete transparency they need to meet the growing scrutiny from regulators and watchdog groups.” WeRecycle! currently works with a variety of leading consumer brands in the electronics industry, as well as state, county and municipal governments throughout New York and the Northeast. That experience will be a tremendous advantage for customers when the sweeping new law takes effect.

CEDN: What devices benefit from using Gorilla Glass? JB: Corning Gorilla Glass is an ideal cover glass for the most innovative electronic devices, from smartphones to slates to TVs. Many companies have not only integrated Gorilla Glass, but designed for it. In the rapidly growing handheld and smartphone market, Gorilla Glass compatibility with touchscreen devices is enabling an enhanced user experience, while design flexibility to create thinner, lighter and more aesthetically interesting designs is a key benefit for personal computing devices like notecompanies including Apple, TiVo®, Cisco, Intel, Yahoo!, Napster and Lexar. We made it our mission to create a better customer phoning experience at home and on the go―and it’s working. We spend our time thinking about the customer experience and how to use innovation to create a smartphone for the home. CEDN: If I’m one of Ooma’s customers who purchased the Ooma Telo from one of your retail distributors, what can I expect from my phone service?

CEDN: How do I know if Gorilla Glass is on a particular device? JB: Corning Gorilla Glass is currently used by more than 27 major brands, designed into more than 290 product models, and featured on more than 200 million devices. Due to customer agreements, we cannot identify all the devices that feature Gorilla Glass, but you can find the most current, comprehensive list that we can confirm at corninggorillaglass.com. CEDN: Touchscreens and 3D televisions are key trends at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. Where does Gorilla Glass fit in these trends? and a free trial of our innovative premier services. Most of all you can expect never to pay for a phone call anywhere in the U.S. ever again. CEDN: On TV, I’m frequently hearing about those dongle services that imply they too are a landline replacement; how is Ooma different?

ES: The first thing to expect is easy setup. Just connect the Ooma Telo to your high-speed Internet and your home phone. Most customers are up and dialing in less than 15 minutes. Once you’re up and running, you’ll notice the exceptional call quality achieved by our exclusive Ooma PureVoice HD technology―it’s truly remarkable. You’ll also experience bundled free services like caller ID, call-waiting and voice mail

ES: Ooma provides not only all the basic services of a landline but also innovative features for at home and on the go that are unmatched by any other VoIP service. Ooma is a secure, standalone, always-on device that works independently of your computer. This saves you from the hassle of installing anything on your computer and from having to leave the computer turned on to make and receive calls. With Ooma, there are no compromises or concessions in voice quality. In addition, Ooma allows our customers to keep their current phone number, as well as take advantage of advanced features through our Premier Service

play Move. Three years ago the idea of a player’s body replacing the controller seemed far-fetched. Today these advanced technologies have entered the living room and the mainstream. As technologies evolve, greater technical hurdles are involved in designing controllers and accessories around them. Move, Kinect and Wii provide an avenue to innovation; thoughtful design

will help companies differentiate themselves from the competition. Instead of scrambling to repurpose plastic Wii shells to accommodate Move controllers (tennis rackets, bowling balls, steering wheels, etc.) we at Nyko are focusing on the integral functions of the controller and how players use it. By doing so we give ourselves a chance to bring further innovation and address

their digital camera and the ability to share instantly via their camera phones. With Eye-Fi’s new Direct mode, photos and videos from your camera can be sent directly to your smartphone or tablet device right away … no home network or hotspot required. With a combination of new technology in the card and our app on the mobile device, you can now view the pictures and instantly share them. No more compromising between great quality pictures and instant sharing. CEDN: Will there be a demo of this new feature at the show? JH: Absolutely. Come by the North Hall booth 3614 for a live demo. For more information, visit www.eye.fi or stop by our booth. JB: When it comes to touchscreens, Gorilla Glass is not only exceptionally thin, but enables high sensitivity and accurate responses for the most sophisticated touch technology with the added benefit of being tough enough to handle the ongoing physical contact that is intrinsic to these devices. The leading 3D TV technologies use polarization to create the 3D viewing experience. Some cover glass materials have high birefringence [stress in the glass] which interacts with the polarization effect of the eyewear and creates visible lines and patterns. By contrast, the lower birefringence of Gorilla Glass permits a better viewing experience―as if there is no cover glass at all. To learn more about Corning’s Gorilla Glass, stop by booth 15419 in the Central Hall or visit www.corninggorillaglass.com. For ongoing updates, follow Corning on Twitter and Gorilla glass on Facebook. including, an instant second line, call blocking, call forwarding, multi-ring, voice mail forwarded to e-mail and more. Ooma customers reap the benefits of choosing a service with a strong business track record. Ooma customers enjoy an easy to use, reliable and cost-effective phone service that can easily pay for itself in less than a year. Other dongle solutions have been proven to break down under stressed network conditions. Ooma is truly in a category of its own. CEDN: Why should people make it a point to stop by your booth at CES? ES: At our booth on the Second Level of South Hall, booth 31628, we will be offering demonstrations of the Ooma Telo with some cool new offerings that include our HD Voice running on mobile phones. People who stop by our booth will have a chance to win an Ooma Telo. We look forward to seeing you there. real consumer needs with our products. KODAK (Con’t. from p. 1)

LD: No other company in the world can claim the imaging expertise and credentials that Kodak has built and now employs across the company’s wide portfolio of offerings. Not only did we establish the photography category 125 years ago and invent the digital camera 30 years ago, Kodak continues to push the envelope today in developing cutting-edge digital imaging and printing technology. We pride ourselves on listening to our consumers, channel partners and commercial customers to anticipate and fulfill their needs with innovative products and solutions—from our digital cameras, video cameras and frames that enable instant digital sharing to our in-store photo kiosks, online photo service, consumer inkjet printers and commercial printing solutions which lead the industry in output quality and value. CEDN: What changes in the imaging industry have changed the way you do business? LD: Advancements in digital technology and the proliferation of social networks have revolutionized the way people share. More digital images and videos than ever are being shared online, and Kodak has incorporated features across the company’s range of products that help consumers navigate this new world and reap its benefits. For instance, all of our KODAK pocket video cameras and KODAK digital still cameras feature Kodak’s exclusive ‘Share’ button which allows consumers to tag photos for instant uploading to sites like Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and KODAK Gallery as soon as it is plugged into a computer. Similarly our consumer KODAK inkjet printers and

With PYNK, you can create a frame in three easy steps—choose your frame, scan it at a PYNK-enabled KODAK Picture Kiosk, select your photos. The images will all print out on one sheet, making it as effortless as can be. CEDN: What distinguishes Kodak products from the competition?

LD: In addition to the cameras, which help consumers share their photos instantly with their social networks, photo books and display items are a big emphasis for the company today. Consumers have moved beyond the 4x6 print to more premium products, including photo books from KODAK Gallery and KODAK Picture Kiosks, as well as new innovations in the frame industry with the new KODAK PYNK SmartPrint System. The new ‘digital consumer’ wants personalization, and customization, high quality content, ease of creation and exciting new ways to share. Photo books are

Consumer Electronics Daily News Ashley Entertainment (Con’t. from p. 1)

Ashley Entertainment, sums up the philosophy that has altered the current landscape of the musical instrument category. At the request of several top retailers seven years ago the Spectrum brand of musical instruments was introduced to the consumer electronics market. With a long history of success sourcing product from the Orient and an understanding of the market, the team at Ashley Entertainment developed a line that offers margin for the retailer yet retained its ‘playability’ and viability as an instrument that the beginner could grow with. ‘We don’t manufacture disposable instruments and though our instruments are marketed at the entry level price point, we know that our catalog offers far greater quality than its meager price point would have you believe.’

we have to make each of our items unique and different than everyone else. There is not one instrument in our catalog that does not offer something that is proprietary to the Spectrum brand. Examples of this are our Plug & Play Mini Guitar Amp that accepts an iPod/mp3 or our Wireless Guitar, no longer is there a need to wear a fannie pack. The electronics are built right into the body of the guitar! We are always building value into the Spectrum line!

company in the past year? RB: This year sure has been hectic as we took on the huge task of making 24 items available as a drop ship vendor for a majority of the top e-commerce sites. To facilitate this huge undertaking we moved our corporate warehouse and offices to Nevada where we can pick, pack and ship an impressive number of items each day. In addition to updating our facility it was necessary to upgrade our systems. On a daily basis we become more proficient streamlining our process to become more efficient. After only six months in Nevada I can say we are established and systems are in place for the upcoming holiday season. Already we are experiencing growth from the .com side of our business. This is truly a ‘no risk, high reward’ program for any e-tailer.

RB: Great question. With regard to sales I can tell you that we will have our best year ever. Even with the current economic conditions I’m optimistic and comfortable knowing that as a company we are offering a greater value than our competitors. As mentioned above we do have proprietary items that add value to every instrument and that will continue as we bring in new instruments to complement our current catalog. This year you will see acoustic drum sets, several wireless options and a new selection of keyboards that offer advanced technology, a must-see! Again, we will approach these new items with the same philosophy as everything else in the line. We will continue to offer a greater value for the consumer yet retaining the highest standards when manufacturing.

From an infrastructure and logistical standpoint we do not use brokers or agents overseas. We have an office in Hong Kong employing our QC team in addition to an interest in a manufacturing facility in mainland China. Ashley employees are responsible for quality control and management is in place to guarantee a defective rate of less than 1 percent of what we deliver.

only kept interest consistent within the U.S. marketplace but have also proven successful in Asian markets: Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. A recently formed European division in France, led by Managing Director Philippe Rousseau, will accelerate plans for propelling VistaQuest further into the global market, touching more than 18 European countries, Russia and those in Africa and the Middle East. VistaQuest’s international brand quest will also include sales and marketing efforts to highlight the Speedo brand of MP3 products as well as Speedo underwater cameras. Digital cameras, video cameras, and portable DVD/TV products will constitute the company’s product mix going forward. Hejran expressed high hopes for

success with an additional line of film and photo scanners that can digitize ordinary photos or negatives. “Rousseau’s long-standing and strong relationship with European customers and his capable sales and marketing team are well prepared to move all of our lines for continued growth,” said Hejran. With a price range of $10 to $199, successful entry to each market segment has produced total VistaQuest sales that double digit increases for each of the four years the company has been capturing new accounts. Cliff Montgomery adds that while mass market is a focus for them, he and his team are also working hard to develop the premium-incentive sales market as well as the catalog sales. “We’re realizing that in good or bad economies, profit margins, broad product

lines and ensured quality never go out of style,” he said. “The fact that buyers and sales representatives now come to VistaQuest seeking product … well, that’s the best assurance we can receive. Adding account representatives for South America and Canada are part of our goals for the coming year.” Trajectory into the global market will dominate VistaQuest’s sales and marketing plans for 2011, but Montgomery emphasized their resolve to maintain their consultative approach to ensure collaborative relationships with accounts. “All of us, including Rousseau’s team, have years of experience in the photo world. Our goals always focus on buyer and consumer needs to achieve the best possible outcomes.”

Headquartered in Woodland Hills, Calif., the company has quickly expanded with growth spurred by Hamed Hejran, VistaQuest’s CEO and former Vivitar executive, along with Cliff Montgomery, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and Larry Edwards, Vice President of National Accounts. “Our VistaQuest manufacturers have been quite responsive in assembling digital features to produce private label cameras and video. How does TaHomA work? • A certified Somfy TaHomA Expert dealer will work with consumers to install and tailor the operation of the TaHomA gateway controller and each ZWave and RTS wireless controlled device according to the consumer’s life at home and when away. • Z-Wave is a next-generation Head-Direct (Con’t. from p. 1)

your company. What’s your main line of business? FB: Head-Direct Corporation is a manufacturer concentrating on hi-grade portable audio products, such as headphones, headphone amplifiers and portable music players. Our business is very internationalized: Our R&D and manufacturing part is located in China. Most of our marketing and sales are in the United States, Japan and Europe. CEDN: What would you say makes your company unique? FB: Just like our trademark HifiMAN, all of the Head-Direct employees are hi-fi fans. We are making portable products, but our standard is at the high-end audio level.

your greatest challenge in the year ahead?

CEDN: What distinguishes your products from the competition?

FB: In 2011 we wish to enter the mainstream consumer electronic market.

FB: We never make a product that we don’t like. A typical way that we do a new product project is: 1. Get foreseeable ideas; 2. Realize ideas by strong R&D ability; 3. Put everything together and make a product in a cost-effective and reliable way.

FB: We will concentrate on promoting our new products, the HifiMAN music players and HE-6 planar driver headphones. We wish more people knew about the HifiMAN brand, and hope that more media outlets will report our product and company.

CEDN: Are you introducing any new products? FB: Our most important product is HifiMAN HM-602 and HM-601, the affordable hi-fi grade portable music players. These players provide hi-fi grade sound quality because it has a built-in headphone amplifier and a highend DA convertor.

CEDN: What was the most significant event or series of events affecting your company in the past year? FB: We announced the HifiMAN HM602 Hi-Fi portable music player in May of 2010. CEDN: Describe your current marketing strategy. FB: Currently our strategy is to concentrate on the headphone and hi-fi market. This is a small and unique market. People from the headphone community are relatively young. They are very easy to get to understand new concepts and accept new products. Because we are new and our product style sometimes is very alternative, the headphone community is a very important market for us. CEDN: What do you anticipate to be

CEDN: Compare the position of your products and their technology against the current market.

FB: Sound quality is the most important point. We are trying our best to make the best sound quality in our product category.

FB: Most mainstream consumer electronics manufacturers don’t even think about making their product sound better. On the other hand, a lot of hi-fi audio builders are not able to make their cost down to the mainstream consumer market level. We have a strong background of adding high-end audio elements into consumer products. HifiMAN portable music players are good examples of using high-end audio technology to make the portable music player a typical consumer electronics product.

CEDN: What products do you see as being hottest this year?

CEDN: What is the nature of your company’s distribution?

FB: The HifiMAN HM-602 and HM601 portable music player will be the hottest product this year. Most portable music players cannot provide good enough sound quality to let people hear how good of a sound the lossless music format provides. Lossless music format is becoming more and more important because Internet downloading speed is very fast now. Because of this, people will need HM-602.

FB: We do have a small international distribution network; however, we do need to set up a good distribution system to make our product available to more customers.

Another very interesting product is the HifiMAN HE-6 planar driver full-size headphones, a unique design providing electrostatic headphone-level sound quality. CEDN: Where is your current product emphasis?

CEDN: What was your program last year? FB: We concentrated on new product projects and made a very important achievement: HifiMAN HM-602 portable music player and HE-6 full size headphones.

Consumer Electronics Daily News

CEDN: How do you handle sales? FB: We have a retail Web store. We also have several dealers in more than 20 countries.

Can a homeowner change the settings or add a new device to their TaHomA system? • Consumers can easily make changes to their TaHomA settings on the road or at home through a computer, iPad or iPhone. • Somfy TaHomA Expert dealers are also available to make changes for consumers remotely or on-site. When will TaHomA be available for purchase? • TaHomA is scheduled to launch during the first quarter of 2011 and will be available throughout the United States. For more information, stop by booth 21266, South Hall Lower Level.

CEDN: How do you see the next year in terms of economy, sales, technology and product evolution? FB: We wish the economy in 2011 will become better so that we will have more sales. We believe that hi-fi grade portable music players will become an important trend in the near future. Lossless and high bit [such as 24bit 96 khz FLAC format] music downloading will become more and more important because current Internet speed is so fast that the music file size will not be a bottleneck for customers. CEDN: What is your outlook in general for this product line? FB: Currently our product line includes portable music players, in-ear headphones, full size headphones and headphone amplifiers. We will finish and release entry-level and mid-level portable music players in 2011. At the same time, we will make better headphone products for headphone community customers. CEDN: Please assess the marketplace as it relates to your product line. FB: Hi-fi audio and proaudio: full-size headphones and headphone amplifiers. Portable audio: portable music players and in-ear headphones.

CEDN: Who are your target end users? FB: Our most important end users are customers from the headphone community. In addition, we are also trying to get into the mainstream consumer electronics market. CEDN: Tell our readers about your trade show objectives, plans, products, promotions, etc.

CEDN: To what do you attribute your company’s success? FB: Original ideas, high-level R&D team and hard work. For more information, e-mail head.direct @gmail.com, visit www.head-direct.com and www.hifiman.cn or stop by South Hall Lower Level booth 22134.
