TASER® INTRODUCES THE 2011 FAMILY SAFETY GUIDE, PAIRING CONSUMER EDUCATION WITH TECHNOLOGY Looking to help empower families, TASER® CEO Rick Smith, talks about the importance of safety preparedness. As a father, husband and friend, I know all too well how suddenly accidents and emergencies can happen. Prior to launching TASER, I unfortunately experienced just how quickly our safety can be compromised, when two of my former high school football teammates were gunned down in a road rage incident. Whether we’re at home with our families or out and about, it is critical to establish a plan and empower ourselves in case something unexpected should
happen. In 1993 I started the company with my brother, Tom, to build technology that helped civilians to both be prepared and take control of their own lives. Along with building technology such as our Protector™ safe driver system and our consumer TASER C2™ (a compact electronic control device or ECD), we’re looking to expand the message around family safety and the importance of having a plan in 2011. That’s why we’ve created the TASER 2011 Family Safety Guide. At TASER, we’ve personally learned whether an emergency is a house fire, a home burglary, or event outside the
Consumer Electronics Daily News home—having a plan, feeling empowered and taking precautionary actions are crucial to getting out of a dangerous situation successfully. As a company that is built on the premise of “protecting life” and pioneering safety technologies, here’s a glimpse at what you can expect to see in our safety guide: 1. As a family, vow to curb distracted driving in your own home— take a stance and understand the risks of the decisions you make while on the road. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, in 2009 more than 5,000 people died due to cell phone related auto accidents. 2. Be sure to talk with your family about what your safety plan is and how everyone can play their part—nominate a “Safety Ambassador” within your home that will play the lead when it comes to making decisions and taking charge in an emergency. 3. Have an appropriate safety kit for your home, office and on-the-go that

POWERGENIX OFFERS CLEAN, SAFE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY Nanci Bergman, Director of Consumer Sales, PowerGenix, talks about her company. CEDN: How do rechargeable batteries’ performance compare with disposables? How do PowerGenix’s Nickel-Zinc batteries compete? NB: Until recently, rechargeable battery technologies have not kept pace with rapid innovations in the consumer electronics market. The development of more complex and powerful portable electronics has placed new strain on traditional rechargeable batteries. Consequently, rechargeable batteries are associated in some people’s minds with lackluster performance and a poor user experience compared to single-use lithium. PowerGenix’s Nickel-Zinc [NiZn] batteries change that paradigm, delivering power on par with disposables and 30 percent more power than Nickel MetalHydride [NiMH] and Nickel-Cadmium [NiCd] technologies. NiZn provides performance that is comparable with Li-ion, but without the safety concerns. CEDN: What kind of features do you see consumers evaluating when choosing a battery? NB: Truth be told, most people don’t think about batteries until their high-drain gadgets go dead, bringing playtime to a screeching halt. So performance is number
one. Then comes environment: consumers are more conscious about the effects the batteries they purchase have on the earth, opting for products that have less impact on the environment. However, performance can sometimes be compromised in ecofriendly products, leaving consumers in a quandary. Between performance and eco trade-offs, consumers most often choose the batteries that have the requisite performance to meet the demands of power hungry electronics. With PowerGenix’s NiZn batteries, they no longer have to make a choice―they get high performance in an eco-friendly product. CEDN: What sets PowerGenix apart from other AA rechargeable batteries? NB: Above all: performance. Beyond performance, PowerGenix’s rechargeable NiZn AA batteries are the cleaner, safer and more powerful alternative to existing rechargeable batteries. They are the only rechargeable batteries offering the performance of single-use lithium and alkaline―providing a rechargeable option that reduces waste and provides overall cost benefits to the consumer. As such, NiZn batteries allow the consumer to experience a higher performance product while staying true to the planet. For more information, visit www.power genix.com.

COOL COMPONENTS TAKES ON CES
ELECTRONIC RECYCLING: WHY?
Cool Components will be exhibiting for the first time at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas! Cool Components, out of Tampa, Fla., has been in business for six years and now offers the most comprehensive line of cooling products and accessories for the residential and commercial consumer electronic markets. While Cool Components started in the custom electronics market, they have now expanded into commercial system cooling and have extended their borders well beyond the U.S., which makes CES the perfect choice for gaining additional exposure. Cool Components has also ventured into providing OEM solutions and is expanding into peripheral markets which go beyond serving the needs of audio video resellers and consumers. The heat produced by electronics has contributed to various problems as has been experienced by manufacturers of game consoles. More closely to home, that audio video receiver that shuts down or cable/satellite receiver that becomes unresponsive is likely due to excessive heat. Most often the problem occurs when components are hidden away in cabinets and enclosures where airflow is limited or simply when components are stacked on top of one another. With the advent of home theater systems, high definition television, and now 3D TV, today’s systems simply generate more and more heat and in most cases, the airflow is simply insufficient to keep the
How did DP Electronic Recycling (DP) begin? DP began in 2010. Dale Helgeson, President, had previous industry experience and wanted to provide high-end service with environmental integrity, so he ventured to start his own electronic recycling business. It was also helpful that Wisconsin mandated its electronic recycling requirements in September 2010. What services does DP offer? In addition to End of Life Electronic Recycling they also offer Asset Management, Data Destruction, and Resale Services. What items will they accept for recycling? DP will accept any electronic item that runs on batteries or plugs into a wall. They feel every item should be recycled, not just what is mandated by law. What is entailed in End of Life recycling? End of Life Recycling is where the electronics are completely disassembled and sorted according to their components. The components are then sent to specific recyclers that harvest the reusable materials to be reused into new products. Who should be recycling electronics? Everyone should recycle electronics. From individuals to corporations, recycling is the responsibility of our society as a whole. What happens to the components in used electronics? All hazardous materials are extracted in a contained, environmentally safe manner and disposed of properly. Recoverable components and materials can then be removed, sorted and resold as commodities. How much of recycled components
systems cool. While some issues with heat such as thermal shutdowns are seen as short-term inconveniences, the long-term effect is that the lifespan of components can be drastically shortened if the issue is not addressed. Fortunately, cooling systems are pretty straightforward and Cool Components helps you tackle the issue head on before you encounter any problems. Cool Components offers products ranging from cabinet and enclosure coolers to room and closet ventilation systems. In addition to the most comprehensive line of equipment rack cooling products, Cool Components has their own line of Cool Racks which has cooling fans built directly into the framework of the rack. Cool Components continues to be the innovator in the category and offers a solution for most any thermal-related problem. Cool Components sells their products through an extensive network of elite dealers and distributors throughout the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Additional distribution is being set up and sought in other international destinations. Cool Components would love to hear from you if you need further information on how to obtain the products or if you are an international distributor looking for a great, new line to carry. For additional information you can visit their website at www.coolcomponents.com or e-mail them at info@coolcomponents .com. Stay Cool!!!
end up in landfills? Very few; most components can be recycled out and made into new products which also help preserve our natural resources. Are any items sent to non-developed countries? Not from DP’s facility. Everything is recycled in the U.S. or sent to approved vendors overseas that must verify the reuse of the component. How many states mandate electronic recycling in the United States? There are currently 20 states which mandate electronic recycling laws and the rest will not be far behind. The EPA is driving the initiative to mandate electronic recycling in every state. How can companies make money off electronics they are looking to recycle out of their system? Companies can utilize DP’s Asset Management service. This service will test and resell the electronics if they are of value, and the company will in turn receive a percentage of the sale. How secure is the data destruction process? DP wipes all of their hard drives to Department of Defense 5220-22M standards. They also will give a certificate of destruction of the data upon request from people using the service. For more information on electronic recycling or DP Electronic Recycling’s other services, please stop by South Hall booth 26429.

Now consumers can access the power of knowing important data about their bodies in real-time with the launch of the BodyMedia FIT Armband BW from BodyMedia, the pioneers in wearable body monitoring devices. The new BodyMedia FIT Armband BW is available on Amazon.com as well as through the BodyMedia website and represents the first-ever body monitoring armband that can communicate with a smartphone. Utilizing Bluetooth wireless technology to send information to users’ fingertips, the technology communicates directly with a smartphone and provides near real-time caloric burn data, physical activity levels and steps taken, giving consumers valuable information to manage their fitness goals, right on their phones. “The BodyMedia FIT Armband BW is a great example of how consumers can monitor and track their fitness levels with the help of Bluetooth wireless technology—and once you start to track your health, you have the power to change your health,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). “By allowing near real-time monitoring on a mobile phone via Bluetooth technology, the BodyMedia FIT Armband BW lets users take the wheel on the road to a more active lifestyle. This innovative device brings to life what we have been projecting for Bluetooth wireless technology in the health and fitness market.” Through this new generation technology, users can track their personal fitness goals with calorie input vs. output technology and understand their calorie balance by using the app’s food logging tool. The integrated Bluetooth App also offers the feature to create a personalized workout based upon users’ caloric, activity or step targets. “One of the reasons that using BodyMedia FIT is helping our users lose three times more weight than if they tried to lose it on their own is the motivational factor that comes from knowing and understanding their body,” said Christine Robins, CEO, BodyMedia. “With the launch of the BodyMedia FIT Armband BW, Blackfire (Con’t. from p. 41)

In addition to the BodyMedia FIT Armband BW, the line includes free smartphone apps for current BodyMedia FIT Armband wearers. These apps are allowing users to log their food right on their smartphones and see a snapshot of their personal Activity Manager throughout the day based on the last time they synced their Armband to the online BodyMedia FIT Activity Manager, an innovative software program where users can see their caloric intake, calories burned, physical activity, steps taken and sleep efficiency. Editor’s note: Chris Robins, Chief Executive Officer and Ivo Stivoric, Chief Technology Officer are available to speak with the media on how the integration of body monitoring devices and data is changing the landscape of health and wellness as well as a perspective on new markets for body monitoring technology utilizing smartphones as a key information portal. ALIBABA.COM PROVIDES NEW PRODUCT SOLUTIONS ONLINE The current economic climate has made it more important than ever for all businesses to reassess their cost centers and explore ways to improve margins. Dain Hodson, Vice President of Operations for NLU products, did just that and made a big difference for his company. Six years ago NLU Products began selling easy-to-use screen protectors that were customized to fit PDAs. As the business began to develop, Hodson found that although 95 percent of NLU’s production is in the U.S., some of the components needed for the company’s BodyGuardz line were not available domestically at affordable prices and sometimes not at all. While searching the Internet for overseas manufacturers to meet his needs, Hodson found Alibaba.com (booth 20753, South Hall),
the world’s largest business-to-business online marketplace, which changed his purchasing strategy indefinitely. “I looked at a couple different companies from my initial search results but Alibaba.com had the greatest selection of items I was looking for by far,” said Hodson. “Alibaba.com allowed me to easily inquire about different products from a large variety of vendors. Once I located three to four potential suppliers, I was able to review samples, negotiate pricing and receive orders within a onemonth time frame.” Prior to using Alibaba.com Hodson spent endless amounts of time searching the Web and sifting through each individual manufacturer’s website to find the appropriate products. “With Alibaba.com I discovered a meeting place to find vendors both
CELEBRITIES USE INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY TO RELIEVE STRESS At one time or another, stress impacts the majority of us, and that is undoubtedly more true than usual here in Las Vegas during the world’s largest Consumer Electronics Show, for both exhibitors and attendees. Many presume, on the other hand, that the privileged life of celebrities, with the attendant fame and fortune, is a wonderfully stress-free life. Conversely, even celebrities feel the sting of stress, and perhaps even more so, as they often suffer from a lack of privacy, performance stress, and demands to meet. Some celebrities have found that using HeartMath’s emWave Personal Stress Reliever is a simple and effective way to beat the stress.
“This [emWave] is amazing. Public speaking makes me crazy. I need my emWave,” said Annalynne McCord, known for her role as Eden Lord on the FX television series “Nip/Tuck.” Many celebrities find themselves in stressful situations as a result of the paparazzi, famous for following them around and exposing their lives to the world. Such things as giving speeches, handling workplace demands, and even rush-hour traffic become major sources of stress that can impair one’s ability to perform, and may even impact their well-being. Mark Salling, known as Puck on the Golden Globe Award-winning series Glee, tried the emWave at a recent charity
BLACKFIRE RESEARCH INTRODUCES A RADICALLY SIMPLIFIED WIRELESS AUDIO SYSTEM FOR COMPUTERS AND SMARTPHONES With Blackfire Research’s SuperStreamHD technology, you can play music from your computer or smartphone directly to ‘smart’ speakers over Wi-Fi without any other equipment. No bridges, docks, wires, hubs, or separate controllers are needed. Though the Blackfire system may look like a set of Wi-Fi speakers, it is a complete audio system with a rackful of high-end components (including amps, dacs, network processors, audio CPUs and more) built into each set of speakers. Also, Blackfire Research’s simplified system architecture delivers better-than-wired performance by eliminating all the hubs and connections of the traditional stereo. “The best of the best … minimalist
heaven.” StereoMojo SuperStreamHD is a different kind of wireless. Most wireless systems require hardware at both ends of the wireless connection. From the player, you have to attach an adapter/dongle, an extra box, or build in a special chipset. At the other end, the receiver is wired to the speakers. SuperStreamHD solves both those wired problems. Because Blackfire Research uses Wi-Fi which is typically built into most computers and smartphones, Blackfire Research systems do not require attachments to the player. This allows your mobile device to remain mobile and dock-free. Also because Blackfire Research’s Smart Speaker Audio System and Smart

domestically and internationally that manufactured products I needed at a price point that made NLU more competitive.” Since Hodson was unable to make factory visits during the search process, he relied heavily on Alibaba.com’s Gold Supplier certification which helps to guide buyers to reputable suppliers. “I relied on Alibaba.com to find vendors that were trustworthy, and I have not been disappointed,” said Hodson. “We’ve worked with companies from China, South Korea, Hong Kong, South America and Europe and have built great relationships with each one.” In the fast-paced world of consumer electronics accessories, it is important to turn around a product quickly because new devices are constantly being developed and released. “The suppliers we found through Alibaba.com allowed us to keep up with new product releases and stay one step ahead of our competition,” said Hodson. Today NLU sells three product lines—ScreenGuardz, BodyGuardz,
and TatSkinz—for a variety of consumer electronics including cell phones, PDAs, media players, gaming devices, cameras and GPS devices. The company currently employs more than 40 people and its product lines are sold worldwide through resellers, distributors, and NLU’s websites. Alibaba.com is a comprehensive but user-friendly resource that helps its users find simple, trustworthy business solutions and more competitive prices. With more than 14.9 million registered users and more than 1.2 million storefronts on the international platform, Alibaba.com can also be used as an online research tool for entrepreneurs to research market demand, follow competitive products and services, build relationships and find lowcost manufacturers willing to produce a smaller quantities for new businesses. According to Aberdeen Group, sourcing online through Alibaba.com can shorten the normal sourcing cycle by 75 percent. For questions, please email cs-us@service.alibaba.com.
event and was fascinated by its possibilities. Salling said, “This is so cool. It would be great to have on set.” The emWave is effective because it helps people to identify their stressors and then use a coherence technique to release them. Through coherence, the heart, brain and nervous system are able to operate in better harmony and efficiency. As a result, people experience an improvement in their energy, become more resilient and have less stress. More than 10,000 health professionals across the U.S. use the emWave technology to help patients reduce their stress and anxiety. The emWave has been created based on nearly 20 years of research into the critical link between emotions, heart function and cognitive performance. Weighing just 2.2 ounces, with
dimensions a little smaller than a deck of cards, the emWave Personal Stress Reliever reads heart rhythms through its built-in finger sensor and provides immediate feedback. The device reflects the emotional state through changing colored lights and sound and includes instruction for the Quick Coherence® technique so the user can learn to quickly shift into a more positive emotional state. By using the emWave, users are able to learn a new way of responding to stress. To learn more about HeartMath and emWave technology, visit booth 3222 in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, or go to www.heartmath.com. To stay up to date on HeartMath’s latest stress-relief resources, join its Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages.
Amp Audio System built the necessary rack components into the speakers and amps, Blackfire Systems do not require central receivers or wires connecting the speakers. Is that a big difference? It is if you want to play music from whatever computer or smartphone you have in your hand, on the fly. It is if you are tired of digging through the sofa cushions for another remote. It is if you want a system that can play any and all music out there as soon as it is available. It is if you believe that the great advances in networks and the Internet are about options, not limits. “The best by far and wide was that from Blackfire Research.” Computer Audiophile Passive, to Active, to Smart Speakers as a Network Audio Device
The trend in technology is the movement of intelligence from centralized to distributed systems where the intelligence is added to the end nodes—smart devices. Everything, from printers to storage, is becoming smarter. Even the DVR with the TV is really a ‘smarter’ TV that has completely transformed viewing habits. Blackfire Research’s Smart Speaker Audio Systems are a logical extension of that trend. By making home audio systems shared on the home network, Blackfire Research’s SuperStreamHD allows any networked computer or smartphone to play to them. Blackfire Research’s Super-StreamHD makes the next generation audio system available today with the only anywhere, any time, any media, from any device high-def wireless audio system. PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER FOR 2011: ʻBEING THE PREFERRED BRAND & VENDORʼ “Make Room,” “Step Aside,” “I Pity The Fool That Gets In Our Way”: this was Ashley Entertainment’s mantra going into 2010 and judging by the landscape and significant undertakings achieved, it’s easy to conclude they have worked diligently, efficiently and effectively marketing the Spectrum line of musical instruments. It is not enough that the corporate warehouse and offices were moved from Tampa, Fla. to Henderson, Nev. Ashley Entertainment also decided to develop a “drop ship” program utilizing 24 of their bestselling items.
“Trend” electronics have always been used to build traffic and today’s e-tailer now has a no risk-high reward program offering not only guitars (acoustic and electric) but also keyboards, digital drums and their associated accessories. So now that Ashley has gained market share, where do they go from here in 2011? Ashley’s booth is always one of the hottest as musicians gather to try out what is coming for the new year. Last year attendees were amazed at the Spectrum wireless guitar. The Ashley people had an incredible
WHAT DO YOU GET BY COMBINING ICONNECTMIDI, AN IPAD AND THE HOME CONCERT XTREME APP: A PIANO TEACHER We recently spent some time with Michael Loh, Founder of iConnectivity [North Hall, booth 3922], along with George Litterst, President of TimeWarp TechnologiesTM and their demonstration of this innovative use of technology. CEDN: Can one of you describe for our readers what you just demoed to me? GL: What we have here is a full-sized digital piano connected through iConnectMIDITM to an iPadTM. On the iPad we are running Home Concert ExtremeTM (HCX), an application by TimeWarp Technologies (www.time warptech.com). With this merging of technologies, we now have a portable and interactive method for learning, enjoying and performing music at any level. HCX determines the performer’s location, tempo and dynamics,
musically coordinates the playback of accompaniment tracks, and turns the pages automatically. In Learn mode, for example, HCX will wait for the performer and provide visual feedback about which note is the correct one to play. CEDN: So I could give this to my granddaughter to help her with her piano? GL: Very much so. HCX with iConnectMIDI is a perfect combination from the beginner learning to play to the professional mastering a new piece. And I should note that HCX works with MIDI files that come from all of the major publishers of instructional materials. CEDN: So how did you guys start working together?

OK, so that is cool, but also the performer had a media player connected directly into the guitar and was playing Hendrix, Clapton, Stones. You get the picture. It was loud, it was fast and it was awesome! For the coming year there will be significant expansion to the catalog by introducing several acoustic drum sets and some advanced technology for keyboards. The engineers at Ashley always look to build value into their packs by offering some proprietary innovative item while retaining aggressive price points. Examples of this strategy are visible throughout the line in such items as their Plug and
Play mini amp that accepts an iPod and allows the user to download and play along to their favorite tracks. Or they have the option of going to www.ashleyintl .com and downloading award-winning instructional material and professionally recorded Jam Trax. Also innovative is the Essentials Series Keyboard Stand that includes a Mic Boom so that the keyboard user can easily mic up and sing along while playing. You can be sure that the new Spectrum acoustic drums, advanced technology keyboards and whatever guitars are coming will be something to consider moving into the new year. ML: It was almost a year ago when we started contacting developers of interesting applications, both on iOS devices and computers, about potentially working with iConnectivity™ to develop new and interesting apps for iConnectMIDI. George and his team were quick to see the synergy and jumped right in. It has been a great partnership.
GL: It was a relatively straightforward port to the iPad with its inclusion of CoreMIDI Framework in iOS 4.2. Prior to the iPad, we had HCX running on Mac OS X. There were a number of significant UI differences that we encountered when programming for the iOS, but nothing tripped us up. The team at iConnectivity also made it easier with their excellent understanding of the technology, and they were very responsive to our questions and suggestions.
CEDN: So George, why iConnectMIDI and not some other solution? GL: Well, that was a simple decision. The guys at iConnectivity get it. Not only does iConnectMIDI ‘connect’ to just about every MIDI-enabled device out there, it is also extremely fast, outperforming all other iOS MIDI products. Our real-time program simply cannot work with a device that adds latency. IconnectMIDI product is really a dream come true for MIDI software developers. It’s about time!
CEDN: Well, this is great—how do I get one for my granddaughter? ML: You can order iConnectMIDI online today from www.iconnect midi.com and soon from your local music retailer. HCX is available from the Apple online App store.
CEDN: Were there any significant challenges in the application development?
iConnectivity is the innovator behind iConnectMIDI. For more information, be sure to drop by their booth in the North Hall, 3922 in the iLounge. You can also visit www.iconnectivity.com, e-mail info@iconnectivity.com or call them at 403-457-1122.

MIONIX AIMS TO CREATE QUALITY ACCESSORIES FOR SERIOUS GAMERS The blue super giant Naos is one of the brightest stars in the Milky Way galaxy, and it’s fitting that the Naos gaming mouse line from Mionix has become a star among specialized high-end peripherals. Based in Sweden, Mionix was founded by a group of passionate gamers who wanted to make original, quality accessories that fit the needs of competitive players. In addition to the Naos line, the company produces a range of specialized mouse pads and headsets. Most of their products have received awards and top ratings from enthusiast and hardware media worldwide for its functionality, customization and ease of use. CompuExpert is the exclusive distributor for the Mionix line in North America. The Naos 3200 features an ergonomic
design and grip-friendly rubber coating for comfort, as well as Plug and Play functionality for players that want to leap into a game and instantly blow away their opponents. For gamers needing additional customization, every one of the 3200’s seven buttons can be programmed to the user’s personalized settings. What’s more, the 3200 features on-the-fly DPI adjustment up to 3200 DPI, ensuring quick and responsive gaming sessions every time. Rounding out the features of the Naos 3200 is a customizable LED light system and large Teflon feet to provide a smooth playing experience. For marathon gaming sessions, the Naos 5000 takes ergonomics and comfort to the next level with support for all five fingers. Mionix tested the mouse extensively with both professional and
amateur gamers to achieve the right fit. The designers also solved the tendency for gaming mice to sometimes become heavy in the back with a centralized tuning system that improves the weight distribution of the mouse. Further innovations include the Surface Quality Analyzer Tool (S.Q.A.T.), which measures the tracking quality of the mousepad surface, and extensive customization features such as adjustable lift-distance, dpi sensitivity, macros and more. Six integrated LEDs support extensive color options and can be configured from the software, and the built-in memory manages up to five profiles, so once the mouse is programmed, gamers on the go can just plug in to any PC and start playing immediately without needing to install drivers or other software.
POWERMAT CONTINUES TO BROADEN SCOPE OF SUPPORT FOR MOBILE DEVICES
like Best Buy, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Costco and Target. You can also find us at Sprint stores and on major online retailer sites. The difference is quite stark and welcome.
In Part 2 of his interview, Ran Poliakine, Powermat CEO, explains what lies in store for the company.
CEDN: What was the most significant event or series of events affecting your company in the past year?
CEDN: What products do you see as being hottest this year? RP: Our newest line expands the breadth of Powermat receivers to support even more of today’s most popular smartphones with thinner, more form-fitting receivers for phones like the iPhone 4, HTC EVO, HTC HD2, Motorola Droid X, and new Blackberry models. The receivers are super thin because we’ve been able to reduce the thickness of our technology by over 50 percent so that you’d be hard-pressed to even tell the difference between a backdoor [receiver] that has wireless technology built-in and one that doesn’t. We also have a new line of power-on-the-go products that lets
consumers charge their devices even without an outlet. And, by the way, both the receivers and the power-on-the-go series are 100 percent driven by consumer request. CEDN: What’s the nature of your distribution? RP: When we first launched in October 2009, we did so with two retail partners as well as the Powermat.com website and Amazon. We were unprepared for the immediate and incredible response we received. In just the first two months after our initial debut we sold in excess of 750,000 Powermat products, with most stores experiencing severe out-of-stock shortages late in the season. This time around, Powermat products are available in over 18,000 retail locations across the nation. Our partners include retail giants
ALCATEL-LUCENTʼS NG CONNECT PROGRAM CAN TRANSFORM YOUR RETAIL EXPERIENCE Steve West, V.P., Emerging Technology & Media, Alcatel-Lucent, describes the ng Connect Program. CEDN: The ng Connect Program was conceived and launched by AlcatelLucent almost two years ago. What has the program been working on since the launch? SW: Multi-industry associations like this tend to make a lot of noise when they first launch and then go quiet―not ng Connect. We’ve been adding new members, growing from 12 at launch to more than 50 today. Together, we have built 20 solution
concepts demonstrating the real-world possibilities with LTE―from the world’s first video game played over LTE to the LTE Connected Car. The ng Connect Program has shone a spotlight on how LTE can transform the consumer experience and our new solution concepts show Retail Transformation. CEDN: What do you mean by Retail Transformation? SW: Shopping is such a personal experience―combing aisles looking for the perfect item―but it can also be timeconsuming and frustrating. With new 4G/LTE connections, tied to cloud-based services such as payment and personal
RP: It’s definitely been an exciting year for us! We’ve launched two product lines in under a year, we’ve expanded our retail presence to over 18,000 outlets across the U.S. and Canada, and we’re keeping pace with the introduction of new smartphones across the industry and we’re getting to work on our Gen 3 line! But if I look back over the course of this past year and try to pinpoint one series of events that have made the most impact on our company, I think it would have to be the overwhelmingly positive response we received—by consumers, media outlets, the tech community and so many others to our initial launch. We were literally scrambling to keep up with demand in profiles, the entire retail experience can change―on-the-go, online or in a store. Imagine just by walking past a store a personalized coupon is sent to your phone, or virtually ‘trying on’ clothes using your own personal avatar on an interactive kiosk. Don’t like the way you look in purple? Press a button to see how you look in blue. It’s retail, transformed. CEDN: What are some of the new solution concepts that are transforming retail? SW: At CES 2011, we are excited to launch the Virtual Personal Stylist―a solution concept enabled by collaboration between application developers, technology providers, and leading fashion icons ELLE magazine, Bloomingdales and L’Oreal. Emerging technologies create an

RP: In the immediate future, we’ll continue to broaden the scope of our support for mobile devices. I expect to introduce high-power capability as a new innovation for laptops and continue to create partnerships with ‘surface owners’ in new categories. Eventually, I see a time when wireless charging is as ubiquitous as wireless Internet access…when you’ll expect to be able to charge your devices wirelessly using Powermat technology just like you expect to be able to get Wi-Fi in so many other settings. THERMAL NIGHT VISION―ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, FOR EVERYONE Bad things always seem to happen at night. Crime rates go up, accidents happen, and people get lost all because it’s harder to see at night. But if you think you can’t see after the sun goes down, think again. With FLIR’s thermal night vision cameras, you can see at night. The newest member of FLIR’s Scout family of thermal night vision cameras puts the power to see clearly in total darkness literally in the palm of your
hand, at a price you can afford. Sound like science fiction? Not quite. Scout is a thermal night vision camera. That means it detects the tiny differences in heat that are around us all the time, and turns them into clear, easy to understand video that you can watch on the built-in viewfinder. Thermal night vision cameras don’t need visible light (the light we see with our eyes) to see. In fact, thermal cameras can’t even see visible light―they

NYKO IS BACK AGAIN WITH NEW GAME ACCESSORIES Nyko Technologies is proud to be back at CES 2011 for their seventh annual visit and is introducing a range of new products this year. As the lifecycle of current-gen consoles continues to lengthen Nyko is refreshing some of their most popular accessories with additional features and improvements. In the absence of a new console launch to generate sales, Nyko must remain focused on their core values in order to succeed: quality, value and innovation. Motion gaming made a huge impact in 2010 and is carrying holiday momentum into 2011. Nyko is pleased to offer two brand new action peripherals for PlayStation Move. While there are already some excellent shooting games for the new motion-control system, it feels a little strange holding a Move controller by itself for those titles. The Perfect Shot for Move is an ideal solution; it lets players have a real-
istic shooting game experience while playing Move. For gamers who prefer using two hands, Nyko introduces the Power Shot, which takes action-packed Move gaming to the next level with slots for the Move and Navigation controllers. Each year, CES offers a wealth of great new gadgets to live under your TV, but it can get hot under there in a hurry. Nyko is combating cramped entertainment centers with the Intercooler STS for Xbox 360. Its sleek black and silver design matches the new Xbox 360 Slim and keeps the console cool by automatically powering on when needed and pulling hot air away from the console. The Intercooler STS plugs into the console’s additional USB port, thereby keeping your console area tidy without sacrificing flexibility. With all the great new games Continued on Page 72

Then Neer takes over; its advanced location-sensing technology automatically keeps everyone up to date: when you have picked up the kids, left work, or are at the store to pick up dinner. Using Neer, you can easily, effortlessly and securely let one another know where you are. It’s your own white picket fence; it’s your world and only those you invite can play behind it. “We selfishly built this app to help our friends and families to help keep track of each other,” says Ian Heidt, Director Services Strategy at QSL. “Now, with the serious consequences of distracted driving, our Neer app is even more relevant so we decided to take it
broadly as part of the Qualcomm lab. You don’t have to take your eyes off the road to let your wife know you’re on the way home or headed to your son’s soccer game. It does it all automatically.” Use your smartphone to dynamically sense, for example, to your peers, to tell them you are running late for work. Or your spouse if you are running late leaving the office. Developed by Qualcomm Services Labs, globally respected Fortune 500 company and pioneer of wireless technologies, Neer is available for download now, or you can visit www.neerlife.com for more information. COMPANIES MORE LIKELY TO VIRTUALIZE APPLICATIONS THAN MOVE TO CLOUD IN 2011 AppDynamics, the next-generation Application Performance Management (APM) company, on Dec. 15, 2010, announced the results of its 2011 Application Performance Management Survey, “Apps on the Move.” Polling more than 140 IT professionals who oversee application performance in Java or .NET environments, the survey provides a snapshot of application performance practices in 2010 and how these will evolve in 2011. Today’s enterprise applications continue to grow in number and complexity, and are increasingly business and revenue critical. The 2011 APM Survey indicates that recent trends in application development and management, such as
the increasing use of service-oriented architecture (SOA), Agile development and the move toward virtualization, are adding to this complexity. In an attempt to wrestle with these new environments, companies are beginning to adopt a collaborative “DevOps” approach to managing mission-critical applications. According to the survey: • Yes to virtualization, still unsure about cloud: Respondents indicated greater interest in proceeding with virtualization projects than migrating applications to the cloud, with 54 percent saying they have virtualization projects on dock for 2011. A resounding 67 percent of respondents said they have no plans to migrate
NOX Audio (Con’t. from p. 1)
Audio and Solteras has always been centered on the integration of design, engineering and manufacturing, so it wasn’t difficult at all. Being able to create our own products came with a great sense of freedom—we began to explore and incorporate features and trends that our experience over the past decade pointed us to. This culminated in the Specialist: A collapsible design to increase portability, twin audio drivers to reinforce the sound through the entire dynamic range and, my personal favorite, the flexible, retractable boom mic embedded in the left ear cup.
JM: NOX Audio is the consumer brand of Solteras, an original design manufacturer [ODM] for companies including JBL, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung. Solteras was founded back in 1997, and since then we’ve produced more than 100 million headsets. NOX Audio came about after discovering the high-quality audio market really didn’t have products that catered to a versatile consumer base. Our first product, the Specialist, was made to deliver high-end sound, work with all sorts of devices from gaming systems to cell phones, and be lightweight and portable enough to wear for hours on end, while on the go. CEDN: What sets NOX products apart from their competitors?
Consumer Electronics Daily News their applications to the cloud next year. • Rise of “DevOps” approach: Nearly a third of respondents report that they have adopted a management approach where Development and Operations share the same reporting structure and are jointly responsible for the performance missioncritical applications. • Agile and SOA continue to grow in 2011: The vast majority of respondents release new capabilities multiple times per year and operate applications built with SOA architectures. In 2011, 49 percent of respondents say they expect to ramp up agile development, and 66 percent expect to leverage additional SOA initiatives for mission-critical apps. • Application outages and performance failures may be due to improper app management: In 2010, 88 percent of respondents reported they experienced at least one Severity 1 problem in regards to mission-critical apps, and nearly 50 percent had experienced five or more such
problems. This may be due to the lack of performance management tools. The survey found that 37 percent of respondents “fly blind” and use no APM tool to manage their mission-critical applications, while 30 percent use a homegrown tool.
This is probably best illustrated through the Scout—it’s a balanced armature inear headset with an in-line microphone for $79.99. When we spoke to reviewers before its launch, most of them pointed out that comparable products are being sold for hundreds of dollars more. Secondly, because we’ve spent years watching headset sales from an ODM standpoint, we are able to identify holes in the market and we’ve worked to fill them by creating products such as the Specialist, with its retractable microphone, or the Scout, with flat and square cables that won’t tangle. The people know what they want and NOX is here to deliver it to them.
certain trends. We also pull a lot of opinion about features from market research. Above all else, NOX is committed to delivering an accessible high-quality audio experience, so we start designing our products from there. Then we begin adding on features, be it comfortable memory foam padding for long-term wear, tangle-free flat and square cables, or using bass-enhanced balanced armature drivers to deliver clear sound, all of which inherently add to the value of the products we create.
JM: First and foremost, we design and manufacture our own products, which not only puts us closer to the headsets we deliver, but allows us to offer higherquality features at a lower price-point than the majority of our competitors.

different aspects of the market, we find ourselves more than ever catering to such a broad variety of installing companies. With this being said, our goal is to develop solutions for these different applications. For example, the residential audio and video market has proven to be drastically growing in regards to installing digital surveillance systems. Broadening our spectrum of clients has proved to drive our sales upwards. Building value in our products and continuing to grow our support system is also a large impact on our sales growth. could be passively crossed over, biamped, and even actively crossed over. This proved to be a very successful endeavor for Rives Audio. Bird explains: “This incredible flexibility in a high-end loudspeaker was unheard of. We could go from a monitor, to a floor stander and even bi-amp or actively crossover the speaker. No one else could do this and it proved to be very successful, perhaps too successful.” It turned out manufacturing in Utah while Rives Audio headquarters are in Iowa proved to be difficult on any sizeable scale. Bird said: “I needed to be involved on a regular basis and it wasn’t possible. For this reason in 2009
I moved all of manufacturing to Iowa.” In September 2010 Rives Audio was awarded a $60,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Economic Development to design and manufacture a new high-end loudspeaker, the Talon Phoenix. “This is an incredible opportunity for us. We are now able to design a no compromise high-end speaker. This will be our new statement loudspeaker. It is modular with separate bass cabinet, mid/tweeter cabinet, and a completely removable crossover housed in an aluminum case. This allows us to change the crossover very easily and upgrade a passive crossover to an active crossover utilizing the Rives Audio sub-PARC
technology.” The sub-PARC is a crossover, parametric eq, and digital switching amplifier for the bass. This allows for perfect integration into a room. Bird further explained: “You have to get the bass right. If you get that right then everything else falls into place nicely. If you don’t get it right you are fighting an uphill battle and will likely never win. The Phoenix is designed to have the flexibility to get the bass right in just about any room.” The Talon Phoenix debuts at CES 2011 in the High Performance Audio section held at the Venetian, Suite 30-117. Like Marchon3D’s other lines of 3D eyewear (including ck Calvin Klein and Nautica), Ex3D is certified by RealD, a leading global licensor of stereoscopic 3D technologies, ensuring the highest
quality 3D viewing experience. “There is more 3D content in the marketplace that ever before—and it will only continue to grow. Now, consumers have an eyewear option when viewing 3D content,” said David Johnson, President of Marchon3D. “No longer are you limited to the flat lenses given with the price of a movie ticket. You can now purchase your own personal 3D eyewear that is reusable, affordable, comfortable, lightweight and matches your personal style. Our 3D eyewear ensures the absolute best 3D viewing experience
possible. Plus there is the added bonus that Ex3D can be used to view other passive 3D content.” The Ex3D line offers a complete assortment of frames for men, women and tweens, and will be available in electronic retail stores and for purchase in select theater locations by spring 2011, just in time for the summer movie season. Nyko Technologies (Con’t. from p. 1)
HN: We’re always examining market trends, monitoring feedback from gamers and playing games ourselves. Our ultimate goal in creating any product is to solve problems. We always ask ourselves, ‘What would I change to make this problem go away or improve the consumer’s experience?’ CEDN: How involved are you in the design and creation of new products? HN: My focus is more on the big picture. I have a very talented team of creative employees who come up with some great ideas. By letting them run with the ball it helps my team improve themselves and think creatively. As part of the process, I will look for new creative benefits inside their ideas and help the team brainstorm on how these ideas would benefit user experience. CEDN: How have you responded to consumer demands and feedback? Intertek (Con’t. from p. 1)
HN: We take consumer feedback very seriously, and keep an open mind to every customer’s problems or criticisms. It is always our goal to come up with a fix to those problems by creating solutions or products that address them. CEDN: What is the most successful Nyko product ever? HN: The Worm Light for Game Boy Advance. It revolutionized the portable accessory space, because it was the first product that did not require additional batteries to power it. The Worm Light drew its power from a port on the Game Boy Advance, negating the need for an extra battery pack. What the industry didn’t understand at the time was that every time something was added to a handheld system [in this case the Game Boy Advance], such as a battery pack, it subtracted from its portability, ultimately defeating the purpose of the device. After the creation of the Worm Light, the industry learned to CEDN: How does Intertek’s ENERGY STAR process facilitate speed?
to manufacturers? CB: Manufacturers have grown accustomed to managing their own ENERGY STAR testing services at their own schedules. With the introduction of EPA’s new third-party testing requirement, manufacturers now have uncontrolled variables in their product-to-market cycle. To mitigate risks associated with thirdparty variables, manufacturers should first look for a lab that is EPA recognized with expertise within desired product scopes, situated near key production centers, and has enough capacity to ensure faster time to market. Manufacturers need a Certification Body committed to turning the certification around quickly, rather than forcing the product into a long queue. Secondly, consider the actual testing and certification process for ENERGY STAR; not only should the Certification Body have a broad scope of products to certify, but they should have a certification model to provide clear expectations for manufacturers. Neato Robotics (Con’t. from p. 1)
the winning entry for a business plan competition at Stanford University, which provided the company its first funding. The inspiration behind the product lay in recognizing that the sophisticated mapping and navigating approaches used by the autonomous vehicles racing in the D.A.R.P.A. Grand Challenge could be harnessed for use in consumer robots. The hurdle was replicating the kind of systems that run on million-dollar machines in a product as affordable as a vacuum cleaner.
CB: Intertek provides a global 18-lab network for ENERGY STAR testing, covering all gas and electrical product categories and providing 24-hour certification turnaround time, once testing is completed. The result is significant bandwidth for meeting time-to-market demands. Intertek’s commitments will mitigate risk for manufacturers and increase productivity and speed-to-market. CEDN: How do clients benefit from Intertek’s energy efficiency expertise? CB: Fifty years of experience in energy efficiency testing secure Intertek’s status as a highly regarded, knowledgeable source for all things regarding ENERGY STAR. We currently have 18 Energy Efficiency Centers of Excellence exclusively reserved for ENERGY STAR testing, and will expand our network to involve 21 separate facilities by Q1 2011. Intertek has diligently created an extensive energy efficient network across North America, Europe and Asia to the eyes and brain of the Neato XV-11. Our big engineering challenge was achieving performance goals in sensing and artificial intelligence at an affordable cost. CEDN: What sets the Neato XV-11 apart from behavior-based robots?
CEDN: How long was the new robot under development?
MS: The Neato XV-11 represents a new class of robot that spatially perceives the physical world and plans its actions based on that perception in much the same way that the human brain works. The ability to plan is the fundamental distinction between the Neato XV-11 and behavior-based robots.
MS: The groundwork behind the Neato XV-11’s Room Positioning System [RPS] Technology goes back as far as Neato Robotics does as a company. RPS Technology constitutes

market that you see today are derived from ideas that were developed at Nyko.
CEDN: How does Nyko distinguish itself in the peripherals industry?
HN: There are many in the industry who believe that the accessory market is in decline, because every time we correct a problem presented by a firstparty manufacturer, they in turn fix that issue in their next generation of the hardware. That makes our job more difficult to come up with the next wave of accessories, but we are always looking for creative approaches. In my opinion, no matter how ‘complete’ the next generation of consoles is, Nyko’s product development team can still come up with more innovative accessories that will further enhance and simplify players’ gameplay experiences.
HN: Our ultimate goal is very simple: we provide solutions to problems. We research what issues gamers are experiencing, and turn problems into business opportunities by creating devices to solve these issues. I often tell my people that every problem you find is the equivalent of a business opportunity. It leads to more innovative products, which results in the company making more money. We are often first to market for these devices, which helps us stand out from the competition. We are guided by our core values of quality, innovation and value, and this strategy has enabled us to become the leading peripherals manufacturer in the United States. Many of the current standard accessories in the gaming accessories

electronics, HVAC, information technology, lighting, and commercial foodservice equipment.
CEDN: What products are Intertek qualified to test and certify under EPA regulations?
CB: For manufacturers that have the capacity to conduct their own ENERGY STAR testing, Intertek’s SATELLITE [Data Acceptance Program] provides ENERGY STAR Partners with an inhouse testing option. Once manufacturer labs demonstrate compliance with ISO 17025 standards, the Partner is indoctrinated into the program and can begin testing in their own labs.
CB: Intertek is an EPA-recognized Certification Body for all gas and electrical products covered under the ENERGY STAR program. The only ENERGY STAR product types not included in Intertek’s certification scope are windows, doors and skylights, as the NFRC is the sole certifier for these three products. Intertek’s 18-lab network has the facilities and expert capabilities to test nearly all gas and electrical product categories covered under the ENERGY STAR program, including more than 60 product types across appliances, home path to cover an entire floor. Knowing where it is, and tracking exactly what it’s cleaned and what it hasn’t, means that the Neato XV-11 doesn’t run in circles or bounce around a room to vacuum. Due to its path efficiency, the Neato XV-11 spends less time and energy driving around, allowing us to equip it with the most powerful vacuum ever built into a consumer robot. Truly a vacuum and not a sweeper, the cleaning system uses fully 80 percent of the robot’s power and provides maximum cleaning coverage on all floor types. CEDN: Tell us more about your customer base. Who’s using the Neato XV-11? MS: Our customer base includes working parents, busy adults, pet owners, tech enthusiasts and seniors. CEDN: What’s the feedback on the robot now that it’s been on the market since late summer? MS: The response to the Neato XV-11 has been overwhelmingly positive since we began shipping. We were recently honored by Popular Science as the Grand Award winner in the Home Technology category for the annual Best of What’s New 2010 awards. It’s been great to hear from customers how much they’re relying on it for everyday cleaning. That’s been the promise of robotics, and it remains a goal in everything we do at Neato Robotics. CEDN: Is there a current market for Quality of Life Technologies?
TK: Founded in 2006, the Quality of Life Technology [QoLT] Center creates intelligent systems that enable older adults and people with disabilities to live more independently. The QoLT Center addresses activities of everyday living by prototyping personal assistive robots, cognitive and behavioral coaches, human awareness and driver assistance technologies. Our research is rooted in human-system interaction, and we closely observe the social and clinical factors required for successful deployment and adoption.
TK: The social need for QoLT is obvious: the world is aging. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1.5 million people currently reside in skilled nursing facilities. Another 76 million Americans born as ‘baby boomers’ are starting to reach retirement. Others are forced into assisted living due to injury: about 250,000 Americans have spinal cord injuries; 2.2 million veterans have service-related injuries.

on everyone’s part.
IH: Yep, the Neer app is out both in the App store for iPhone 4 and in the Android Market. Download it. It’s free! Also, if your spouse or buddy doesn’t have a smartphone but you do, you can still have Neer send text messages to them. All it takes is one of you to have it.
I thought, ‘I work at Qualcomm and work with other great people, many of whom are parents, and co-workers. If we assembled a top drawer technical team, we could build an effective, intuitive, secure and private app that helps employees tell coworkers they are on their way, family members if they’ve left work, and a spouse asking the other to stop and pick up dinner on the way home.’ So we did.
CEDN: Where did you come up with the name?
CEDN: How has the Neer launch gone so far?
IH: It is entirely intuitive. You want to keep friends, co-workers and family near at the right times and for the right information. Near is Neer!
IH: We set pretty high expectations for ourselves and have heartily beaten every single one with more downloads and registered users than we had even hoped for. We have not yet really publicized the product yet we already were voted as an editors pick on Mashable and mentioned in other publications. We expect 2011 to be a Happy Neer Year.
CEDN: Has Neer launched yet?
CEDN: What made you decide to create Neer? IH: It literally came to me one day as my wife and I were talking about the easiest and best ways to stay in touch for those key points in the day where we most need to make sure schedules are aligned for planning. For example, if I am on point to pick up the kids from their day care, she needs to know if it’s been done and that I’ve left work and am on time to get them. Needless worry and incessant calling happens when you can’t be in touch. We’ve all experienced it and it can make for unnecessary worry and stress Innovation Infrastructure. With a $1.5 million Innovation Award from the NSF, the Foundry focuses exclusively on accelerating the new-product commercialization process by looking at broader consumer possibilities for QoLT innovations and assistive technologies. By partnering with industry, practitioners, economic development groups and venture capitalists, the QoLT Foundry strives to put intelligent solutions into the hands of everyone. CEDN: What innovations will QoLT unveil at the 2011 International CES? TK: Visitors can experience First Person Vision—a wearable human assist device that relies on gaze tracking to understand user intention. FPV-enabled devices may soon be offered for sports training, security, and quality control applications.
CEDN: What distinguishes your product from the competition? IH: The app is very unique so it’s hard to compare it. It serves a function that is different than any other app and one that we think is crucial to daily peace of mind. It’s a location service with purpose, privacy and playfulness. CEDN: What challenges lie ahead for the emerging QoLT field? TK: Robots have taken us many places too dangerous for humans. Until recently, robotics typically sought to reduce or replace human involvement. QoLT represents a reversal of this philosophy by emphasizing human-machine symbiosis. The heart of any effective QoLT system lies in solving what a person wants to do, minus what he or she can do. Real quality of life is the ability to live as independently as possible—to do what we can do for ourselves. The practical and technical challenges associated are endless, but exciting and rewarding.
