ALIBABA.COM HELPS BRING PRODUCT IDEAS TO LIFE 4
Sunday, Januar y 9, 2011
Have a great idea for a new consumer technology product or accessory? Not sure how to take your idea and turn it into a product? This is exactly the problem Tony Lee, President of Brad-Lee Innovations, found himself with in 2009. Tony invented the Hand-E-Pod, a colorful cylinder with a zinc ball-head that easily screws into the tripod mount of virtually any digital camera or camcorder and allows the user to hold the device more securely without obscuring the camera’s flash. In addition, the Hand-E-Pod’s hollow design lets the user store items such as memory cards and extra batteries.
To get his idea off the ground Tony used an online search engine where he found Alibaba.com (South Hall booth 20753), the world’s largest business-tobusiness online marketplace. Tony quickly learned that using Alibaba.com took out the logistical problems of finding manufacturers overseas. “Alibaba.com aligned us directly with the most reputable suppliers and made it possible for our business to transition from an idea to a reality. The website is amazing,” said Lee. He found that Alibaba.com was very easy to navigate and helpful for a firsttime user. “The website is very intuitive

AS DEMAND RISES FOR SMARTPHONES TO FUNCTION AS MESSAGE CENTER, ENTERTAINMENT HUB AND MORE, ENERGIZER ACKNOWLEDGES GROWING CONSUMER POWER NEEDS WITH NEW ENERGI TO GO POWER SOLUTION 12
Sunday, Januar y 9, 2011
The proliferation of smartphones has led an increasing number of people to depend on mobile devices for much more than just making phone calls, and with that shift comes a vastly increased demand for portable power. Energizer, a leader in innovative power solutions, is making it easier for people to use smartphones to their fullest potential with the introduction of the AP1201 for iPhone 4. This rechargeable case with built-in battery supplies nearly twice the power of the iPhone, while offering protection that you never need to remove, providing a continuous power source. With 50 million iPhones sold to date*, and more than 1.7 million iPhone 4 phones sold just days after it was introduced**, these devices have become popular for playing games, music and video, and running mobile applications that do everything from global positioning to balancing finances. The AP1201 eliminates the need for iPhone 4 users to curb their usage or to avoid power-draining
applications, and will keep the device charged throughout the day, a long flight or even an overnight trip. “Energizer appreciates the value and utility that smartphones offer consumers, and also sees that the average consumer’s power requirements have been underestimated,” said Jim Olsen, Vice President of Marketing for Energizer North America. “The AP1201 is a direct response to the power deficit that many experience, and is just one of a full line of Energizer Energi To Go solutions that is bringing convenient power to consumers, and that is making mobility easier for them.” The AP1201 has “smart” battery technology that auto senses the iPhone 4 battery power status which is indicated through “hidden” LEDs on the back of the case. For efficient power management, two charging options provide either high speed quick charge direct to the iPhone 4, or get simultaneous pass-through charging of the iPhone and AP1201 case. The AP1201 is rechargeable up to
500 times and comes with a USB charging cable. The AP1201 is a one-piece case, manufactured with form-fitting recycled silicone rubber that is durable, extremely thin and lightweight. The low profile case is silky smooth to the touch, yet non-slip and fingerprint-resistant. The AP1201 also features an integrated bumper that eliminates the signal loss and antennae interference issues that many iPhone 4 users have experienced. Through the use of patented lithium polymer battery technology, the AP1201 extends battery life of standby time, Internet, music, video and talk time, providing nearly twice the power of the iPhone 4. The Energizer AP1201 is available now for an MSRP of $69.99 at major retailers nationwide. For more information, visit www.chargeyouriphone.com or www.facebook.com/energizer. The Energizer Energi To Go product line is developed and marketed through a licensing agreement with XPAL Power, a
Consumer Electronics Daily News California-based tech company that specializes in creating rechargeable power packs that use lithium polymer battery technology. It includes a full range of popular models starting at $24.99 for the newest Energizer AP650 Docking Charger that instantly adds up to 90 minutes of talk time to any smartphone that connects with a micro USB tip. The top of the product range is the Energizer XP18000 external battery, the perfect choice for travelers and those who rely on several different mobile devices including netbooks and laptops, portable DVD players, digital cameras, smartphones, and more. THE PKG GRASSROOT COLLECTIVE DESIGNS LIMITED EDITION COLLECTIBLE TECH ACCESSORIES
Launched in July 2010, the PKG Grassroot Collective (GRC) works with emerging local artists, offering them the opportunity to create a line of limited edition, single-production-run digital accessories. It is a group of artists dedicated to bringing you something unique and unequalled. Andy Priestman, Co-founder and Director of Brand Development, feels strongly about supporting inner city youth: “There are plenty of talented artists in local communities who are looking for creative outlets to express themselves. We want to give them the opportunity to put their signature on something unique that could help them receive some commercial recognition.” Artists use the laptop sleeves and phone cases as blank canvasses for their works of art, while the PKG brand is apparent through the artistic expression without being overt. As a brand created for today’s digital lifestyle, PKG pulls inspiration from the young influencers, fashion insiders, indie music and urban artists in order to cater to the specific tastes of the fashionable
corporate world that was being neglected by the marketplace. It’s also about supporting local up-and-coming talent that shape the trends of tomorrow, creating an outlet to bring new and innovative ideas to market. Artists are chosen based on relevance to the PKG demographic (both male and female) and their underground following. The Grass Root Collective are a limited edition run with unique commissioned works of art that will never be printed twice. Each piece from the collection includes a stitched-in bio of the designer highlighting their achievements and where a consumer can get more information. As a generation of consumers looking for accessory brands related to their lifestyle, the GRC gives consumers the opportunity to purchase an exclusive piece of fashionable and functional artwork from an emerging local artist. HM-602 HI-FI PORTABLE MUSIC PLAYER 24
Sunday, Januar y 9, 2011
With the development of high-speed Internet, people can download more and more lossless music. Unfortunately most portable players cannot get the full potential of these high-resolution lossless music files. As the first player HeadDirect made, HiFiMAN HM-801 player was designed for replaying high quality lossless music files and getting hi-fi sound quality. grade Although its sound quality is truly hi-end grade, most customers cannot afford its $790 price. Now HeadDirect has released HM-602 as an affordable Hi-Fi portable music player. Retail price of HM-602 is $439. As the younger brother of HM-801, HM-602 shares HM-801’s warm and smooth sound signature. It is well known that non-oversampling dacs offer great sound for little money. HM-602 is the first portable player using nonoversampling DAC: Philips TDA-1543. First developed by Ryohei Kusunoki in 1996, non-oversampling design can provide a unique liquid smooth and beautiful timbre sound signature, which is very important to represent the life of music. To satisfy most portable audio fans, the headphone amplifier of HM-602 uses
the exact same circuit and structure of HM-801 hi-end grade player, which is actually a typical op-amp and transistor buffer design. Because such a headphone amplifier requires bi-polar supply in high voltage, Head-Direct designed a complicated dual DC-DC converter for HM602. To drive both high impedance and low impedance headphones, HM-602 with the high/low gain switch can drive both high efficiency IEM and most full size headphones. HM-602 uses both SD cards and 16 GB on-board flash memory to store music. Currently maximium volume of SD cards is 32GB. Because an SD card is small, people will be able to have several cards together and do not have to worry about limited build-in memory size. HM-602 uses a 2800 ma Lithium polymer battery to supply enough power for its very powerconsuming Hi-Fi grade analogue circuit. The player also can be used as a USB DAC. It can connect to a USB port and play music from the computer directly, which is very important for PC Hi-Fi users because most PC sound cards cannot provide such a warm and smooth sound signature that HM-602 can provide.

AUDIO SYSTEMS FOR A SMARTPHONE WORLD Consumer Electronics Daily News
Blackfire Research’s SuperStreamHD Makes Dock-Free, Next Generation Audio Systems A Reality Today
It seems as though people are listening to music everywhere except on their home stereo systems. CDs are ripped and songs are downloaded from iTunes, Walmart and Amazon to people’s hard drives. They listen to Rhapsody, Pandora, LastFM,
and other cloud music services. They watch music videos from YouTube, MTV and Yahoo Music. Instead of stereo CD players, the new music players are computers, iPhones, Androids, iPads, and other tablets and smartphones. Music listening is no longer restricted to the living room. It’s in the kitchen, in the car, in the gym, in the bedroom. Mobile devices with their hard drives and cloud services let people take their music
Privacy is a growing concern. People are generally uncomfortable with Big Brother technologies that capture everything we do—especially on camera. But social scientists at the Quality of Life Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University report that systems which capture activity through a personal field of vision are met with greater acceptance. By shifting from “third person” narratives that objectify to “firstperson” or “inside-out” perspectives offering experiential insights, userfriendly technologies can be made to understand and assist humans with everyday activities. The QoLT Center’s “First Person
Vision” (FPV) innovation uses a pair of tiny, eyeglass-mounted cameras to allow a computer to “see” whatever the person wearing the glasses is looking at and understand why. The first camera uses a wide-angle lens to look at the full field of human vision, while the second uses a close-up lens to examine the user’s eye and pinpoint the exact area on which he or she is focusing. From that composite result and sophisticated machine learning algorithms, the computer can determine a user’s intentions. Intention capture represents a critical step towards solving quality of life concerns with technology. FPVenabled devices detect intent and

OSM Group acquired DICOTA—an established carry solutions brand in Europe—in January 2009. Substantial synergies followed the acquisition, which are enabling DICOTA and OSM to improve and expand their offerings. Why are you launching DICOTA on the U.S. market? And why do so now? “We have turned our attention to the U.S. market because of the potential we see here. In our view, to become a leading global brand you need a strong, successful presence in the States,” said Bracké. As for the timing of the move, he explained that OSM remains cautiously optimistic for 2011, despite the overall state of the U.S. economy. “Although the U.S. market is extremely competitive, we are confident that our offering is unique and of the highest quality: one that not only protects individuals’ electronic devices, but also their personal digital possessions contained on them: their work, photographs, movies, contact networks etc.” What do you judge to be your most pressing challenge? A consumer TASER C2 is just as powerful as the ones that law enforcement use. FACT: The TASER C2 uses the same technology and offers the same stopping power as the law enforcement version. The only difference being that of the cycle time. TASER C2 relays the electric charge for 30 seconds, compared to 5 seconds with the law enforcement version. The extra time allows a civilian the ability to keep an attacker down while the person being attacked heads to safety.
I own a stun gun, which is the same thing as a TASER C2. FICTION: TASER C2 is far more effective than a traditional stun gun. First, it can incapacitate an attacker from up to 15 feet away, while a stun gun requires direct contact with the threat. This extra distance allows for a zone of protection other self-defense options cannot offer. Second, unlike stun guns, TASER technology does not rely on pain compliance localized to the point of contact; rather it affects the sensory and motor functions of the nervous system and inhibits muscular control, keeping an attacker down and immobilized for 30 seconds. In addition to allowing for extra distance from an attacker, a TASER C2 can also be used as a stun device if necessary against multiple attackers. A TASER C2 is far too complicated to quickly use to defend myself. FICTION: It’s as simple as point and

The safety cover is simple to operate but ensures the ECD is not accidentally fired. The laser sight lets you aim accurately and feel confident you will make contact with an assailant. The trigger is a simple push-button mechanism that allows you to deploy the cartridge, place the C2 on the ground, and run to safety while the C2 automatically keeps the attacker down. ELECTRONIC RECYCLING: WHY?
How did DP Electronic Recycling (DP) begin? DP began in 2010. Dale Helgeson, President, had previous industry experience and wanted to provide high-end service with environmental integrity so he ventured to start his own electronic recycling business. It was also helpful that Wisconsin mandated its electronic recycling requirements in September 2010. What services does DP offer? In addition to End of Life Electronic Recycling, they also offer Asset Management, Data Destruction, and Resale Services. What items will they accept for recycling? DP will accept any electronic item
that runs on batteries or plugs into a wall. They feel every item should be recycled, not just what is mandated by law. What is entailed in End of Life recycling? End of Life Recycling is where the electronics are completely disassembled and sorted according to their components. The components are then sent to specific recyclers that harvest the reusable materials to be reused into new products. Who should be recycling electronics? Everyone should recycle electronics. From individuals to corporations, recycling is the responsibility of our society as a whole. What happens to the components in

How many states mandate electronic recycling in the United States? There are currently 20 states which mandate electronic recycling laws and the rest will not be far behind. The EPA is driving the initiative to mandate electronic recycling in every state. How can companies make money off electronics they are looking to recycle out of their system? Companies can utilize DP’s Asset Management service. This service will test and resell the electronics if they are of value, and the company will in turn receive a percentage of the sale. market, Gorilla Glass, when used in place of existing, heavy soda lime glass and glass laminates, is capable of dramatically reducing glass weight in the same footprint. This could lead to improved fuel economy and lower emissions, while assisting customers in meeting regulatory requirements. As consumers are increasingly interested in interacting with their appliances, thin Gorilla Glass enables an improved experience due to increased responsiveness to touch panel and display controls, while its optical clarity brings images to the surface, making them more life-like. Additionally, the unique combination of elegance and durability could provide new design possibilities in state-of-theart home appliances. Being significantly lighter, yet much tougher than more commonly used soda-lime glass is also a key advantage. doesn’t yet exist—despite cloud vendors’ claims to the contrary. There’s an “emperor’s new clothes” situation with regard to cloud interoperability. Despite what many vendors say, it just doesn’t work. Citrin says this will become important in the coming year as users continue to adopt cloud platforms. Initially they will be migrating legacy applications to the cloud, since those applications will be immediately available. But the roadblocks that will come up, particularly with “platform as a service” offerings, may cause users to sour on cloud offerings and cause adoption to be delayed. 2. The introduction of tools and technologies to support interoperability—particularly, the ability to migrate legacy non-cloud applications into the cloud (regardless of the platform for which they were written, and regardless of the cloud platform to which they are being migrated), and the ability to access cloud services from clients running on any platform, regardless of the cloud platform upon which the service resides. However, he
cautions that it needs to be easy. “Customers want things to ‘just work,’ ” Citrin said. “For interoperability to ‘just work,’ it either will need to be built into the cloud platform offerings themselves, or will need to be thirdparty cloud services that can just be plugged into directly. The more technically sophisticated customers who create their own cloud services from scratch will have no problem adopting conventional tool-based offerings, but other customers who want to wire their offerings together from best-of-breed services (that are available regardless of platform) will just want these offerings to work together—either right out of the box or through the addition of easy-to-use interoperability services. These customers are used to the idea of connecting services together, and they will be comfortable plugging in a service that allows interoperability.” 3. Initial steps supporting the notion that interoperability can be a service, too—as well as a conventional tool. Cloud services supporting interoperability will begin to be introduced, and will start gathering early adopters. However, Citrin says customers may be disappointed that the services they create will not be usable by up to half their potential market. If they write Java-based services, they will shut out .NET-based customers, and if they write .NET-based (Azure) services, they will shut out Java-based customers. Creators of cloud services
collaboration platform which engages users tweeting from mobile devices. The MultiTouch Twitter Wall was originally developed as a complementary application for the MultiTouch Cell 46 Advanced product, which is the first multitouch display designed for retail and digital signage applications. As many users as can physically fit simultaneously in front of the MultiTouch Twitter Wall can use the wall. The MultiTouch Twitter Wall complements the existing MultiTouch Cell system, which can display text, video and interactive drawing applications. “We have created the first largescale display application for Twitter, which is ideal for a public multitouch, multi-user display system,” said Petri Martikainen, CEO of MultiTouch Ltd. “Social media and user-generated content are as much a part of the multitouch display experience as archival content, and the MultiTouch Twitter Wall enables greater access to the curated real-time media stream, in a tactile and enlightening way.” The MultiTouch Cell 46 Advanced is a 46-inch display that, at only 30 cm. (12 inches) deep, and 37 kg (82 pounds), is designed for standard VESA mounting for more flexible public installation. The
product’s improved brightness and smooth borders offer aesthetically appealing and flexible configurations, including MultiTouch’s unique asymmetric table or wall display patterns. “Digital signage networks need to live in the same space as the consumers to which they convey information; iPhone, iPad, and other multitouch devices are in the hands of millions of consumers, and public displays need to complement these activities with more sophisticated multitouch applications,” said Hannu Anttila, Vice President of Sales for MultiTouch. “Our system enables customers to complement their own application suites, and we expect to see further developments along the social media multitouch front going forward.” The MultiTouch Cell 46 Advanced is designed for high-resolution HD applications, and can be programmed for sophisticated augmented reality applications, including 2D barcode, tag and marker readers. MultiTouch’s patented computer vision system, which reads up to 100 frames per second in bright daylight or dark environments, is complemented by software that elegantly translates touch into the programming experience, creating multitouch displays that can read
unlimited touch points, including hands, fingers, fingertips and 2D Markers. MultiTouch Cornerstone software allows for flexible multi-platform application development. Introduced to the global market in 2009, the MultiTouch Cell product family has been sold in more than 30 countries, and installed in some of the most prominent international venues, including the recent Wall of Chile installation at the Chilean Pavilion at the Expo 2010 Shanghai China. The Cell products are used for broadcast, retail, advertising, exhibitions, museums, education and design. JNBRIDGE PREDICTS INTEROPERABILITY WILL BECOME LINCHPIN FOR CLOUD TECHNOLOGY SUCCESS IN 2011 AND BEYOND
JNBridge (www.jnbridge.com), the leading provider of interoperability tools that connect the Java and .NET Frameworks, on Dec. 15 said interoperability will make or break cloud computing success in 2011 and beyond. “We believe that what is typically discussed under the rubric of cloud interoperability is so insufficient it will destroy the promise of the cloud,” said Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge and interoperability expert. “Our vision of cloud interoperability is one where applications and services can be developed in any technology and deployed to any cloud, where cloud services can be accessed by any other cloud service or from any client on the ground. In other words, any platform, anywhere. And until that exists, there will be severe limits on user adoption of cloud computing.”
Sunday, Januar y 9, 2011
“Interoperability in the cloud is currently a real problem. Supporting real interoperability is critical to the success and survival of the cloud computing model, and right now it is a large stumbling block that prevents adoption,” said Mark Driver, Vice President of Research at Gartner. “Initiatives that support cloud interoperability in its various aspects will benefit cloud users, vendors of cloud services, and vendors of the underlying cloud platforms.” Aside from interoperability, Citrin sees one other cloud trend in the coming year. “We will see greater support for the ‘housekeeping’ capabilities that will need to be part of any offering built on cloud platforms. Particularly, features like user access and feature control (also known as ‘licensing’) and metering/billing support. I suspect these will arrive in the form of service offerings themselves that can be plugged into the newly developed cloud offerings,” he said. “However, without robust support for licensing and billing, software developed for cloud platforms won’t be anything more than just a toy.” For more information on JNBridge and its family of interoperability solutions, visit www.jnbridge.com. To stay abreast of JNBridge’s plans for the cloud, visit www.jnbridge.com/cloud.

FACEVSION TECHNOLOGY USA BRINGS REAL HD VIDEOCONFERENCING TO THE DESKTOP 64
Sunday, Januar y 9, 2011
By Robert DeMoulin, CE Technology Expert
What do you think of when you hear the word ‘videoconferencing’? Most of us conjure up images of a conference room with a table and chairs and a TV screen with a video camera on top, and maybe even recall frustration with getting the thing to connect to the recipient conference room minutes before the call. During the recent recession, businesses all over the world clamped down hard on expenses, especially travel―which often amounts to 35 percent or more of the average company’s
sales and marketing budget. At the same time, many companies sent employees to work from home offices closer to key customers in an effort to reduce office expenses. As a result of the changing business environment, videoconferencing has begun migrating from the conference room to the desktop to meet the needs of the increasingly remote and mobile workforce, while also making the jump to HD video for clearer, more effective calls. Enter faceVsion Technology USA. faceVsion burst onto the videoconferencing scene at the 2010 CES show with a partnership announcement with Skype, announcing the FV TouchCam
N1 720p SkypeHD certified video camera which has gone on to be extremely popular in the market and is the recipient of LAPTOP Magazine’s Editors Choice award. The TouchCam N1 was a groundbreaking development in the HD videoconferencing camera segment as it was the first sub $130 camera to feature hardware H.264 video encoding, which is essential for transmitting and receiving a full motion 720p video stream through a typical home/small business broadband connection of less than 1.5Mbit/sec. Additionally, the TouchCam N1 includes an exceptionally wide 78 degree field of view capable of capturing an entire room, not just someone’s head and shoulders, and includes dual built-in noisecancelling microphones with beamforming technology for crystal clear sound even from 6 feet away. This CES, faceVsion ups the ante again with the newly announced FV TouchCam V1, a SkypeHD certified 720p video camera costing less than $70,
a stunning price-point for a real HD videoconferencing camera, not a gussiedup webcam. With Skype’s new group calling feature in the latest Skype Windows beta client, three to five users can easily have crystal clear video calls―for free. faceVsion offers a full line-up of 720p and 1080p capable videoconferencing cameras that meets the needs of remote and mobile users who need effective point-to-point HD videoconferencing that won’t break the bank. In fact, all faceVsion’s HD video camera solutions are under $150 MSRP per user and work with video call/online collaboration applications including Skype, Cisco WebEx, GoToMeeting.com, and many others. faceVsion also offers its own QuLives™ video communications manager software with all of its video camera products. OMG As A Steward For New Process Knowledge Initiative Along With BPTrends, IIBA, Queensland University of Technology And Kemsley Design
On Dec. 15, 2010, OMG® announced PKG (Con’t. from p. 1)
AP: I think that there are several things in combination that make PKG unique. The first one being that we are our target demographic. We use our own products and aren’t trying to build something for a demographic that we know nothing about. The second is that we pull our designs― the fabrics, forms and overall product inspirations―from the fashion, music and art subcultures. So the styling of the product gets equal attention to the technical functionality, and we end up with very unique materials, colourways and form factors. The third is that our products have a very short lifecycle. We typically change up fabrics and colourways every three to four months, so consumers always have something in season, and retailers have the opportunity to show something new and refresh the sales floor every quarter. CEDN: How did art and music become a source of inspiration for the brand?
AP: Our family has been involved in the audio business for over 40 years. And when you look at who is setting the fashion trends these days, the worlds of fashion, art and music are very intertwined. These subcultures are our demographic and are filled with people that strive for individu-ality and are always pushing the envelope from a creative standpoint. So it was natural to look to them for inspiration when we started developing PKG products. CEDN: What types of tech-accessory trends should we look out for?

CEDN: What do you anticipate to be your greatest challenge in the year ahead?
MP: I think the economy will continue to be a challenge. With the change in the economy will come a change in buying habits and how/where consumers spend their money. Also, as we expand internationally and open up more to global markets, there will be the challenge of understanding the needs and nuances of those markets better than our competitors. CEDN: What do you foresee happening in 2011 for PKG?
MP: We’ll continue to expand the PKG assortment as the laptop, cell phone and tablet markets continue to grow. We’ll offer more colour-ways, more form factors and more unique offerings that allow us to further differentiate ourselves with includes a micro USB cable so users don’t have to remove it to charge and sync their iPhone. • Join the Surc Community–Users can join Getsurc.com to be part of the online Surc community, where they will be able to improve their user experience by sharing their tips and expertise and get help from other users. They can also share, search and import customized remotes from other Surc users and are encouraged to provide feedback and suggest ideas that would help improve Surc.
Surc is accepting orders for delivery in the first quarter of 2011 at www.getsurc .com. MSRP for Surc will be $69.95.

Consumer Electronics Daily News PowerGenix (Con’t. from p. 1)
DS: PowerGenix develops rechargeable batteries that are more powerful, longlasting, environmentally friendly and affordable than others on the market. We make this possible with a rechargeable Nickel-Zinc [NiZn] battery that is the first new rechargeable battery chemistry for the consumer market in over 20 years. NiZn is more powerful than old rechargeable batteries while also being completely non-toxic and safe.
PowerGenix targets a diverse range of applications for our NiZn technology, ranging from consumer electronics to power tools to the transportation industry.
CEDN: Sounds like a big change. Can you expand on the technological side?
DS: As you probably know, batteries are HeartMath LLC (Con’t. from p. 1)
one can add to a widget. Not so, however, in the case of HeartMath® LLC. A leader in health technology, HeartMath LLC showcases their full line of personal wellness products based on the science of emotions and human performance at booth 3222 in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. And given the stressful nature of having to visit more than 5,000 exhibit booths in four days, this company’s line of personal stress relief products just might be what the doctor ordered for Vegas. “We can absolutely guarantee that there is no other product quite like ours on exhibit at CES,” said Bruce Cryer, HeartMath CEO. jill-e designs (Con’t. from p. 1)
Vice President, respectively, of the company—are happy to explain, that’s by design. “It’s been amazing to watch the spread of cameras and personal electronic devices generally over the last several years,” Wight said. “I mean, is there anyone out there today who isn’t carrying a camera, a cell phone, a music device, a laptop or an iPad or a Kindle, and who knows what else around with them everywhere they go? So the question becomes: ‘How are they going to carry all those fragile devices?’ ” Something else Wight and Backal have noticed is the increasing emphasis on individualization. “Most of us get caught up in the popular trends, of course,” Wight pointed out. “But we also want to distinguish ourselves EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC-BRESSER (Con’t. from p. 4)

chemical devices and, unlike advancements in their portable electronics counterparts, performance gains are limited by the constraints of the periodic table. While incremental gains in battery performance are continually made, PowerGenix’s new battery represents a 30 percent performance leap that also beats the incumbents on cost, safety and environmental impact.

Basically, all of this means that PowerGenix NiZn product is the first rechargeable battery to provide the same quality user experience as a disposable battery. CEDN: Can you tell me a little about the marketplace and the business opportunities you see in this space?
DS: The disposable consumer battery market is a $5 billion industry―and growing. We believe that PowerGenix’s technology has the potential to occupy a significant portion of that market.

source for any high-power, high-drain portable application.
CEDN: What lies ahead for PowerGenix in 2011?
DS: We’re focused on gaining a strong position in the micro-hybrid market. Micro-hybrids are inexpensive alternatives to, for example, a full-hybrid Toyota Prius. At the most basic level, they stop the engine when the car comes to a stop, and restart the engine when you want to go. Micro-hybrids save significant amounts of fuel and make the air cleaner, and only cost $300 to $500 more than standard cars. It’s likely there will be tens of millions of these vehicles sold in the next 10 years, and we aim for those vehicles to use PowerGenix’s NiZn technology.
For the AA consumer market, PowerGenix has developed the first viable alternative to high-performance single-use batteries. With the same operating voltage [1.6V] as primary lithium and alkaline batteries, NiZn offers improved performance in consumer devices. Because consumer electronics require a minimum operating voltage to protect internal hardware and software, 1.6V NiZn provides more complete and steady power throughout
And although our focus here at CES is on our AA batteries, we are heavily focused on developing battery packs for vehicles, including for hybrid electric vehicles. PowerGenix’s NickelZinc technology is the ideal power
Debuting this week, the emWave®2 is the second generation personal stress reliever based on the requests of the thousands of users of emWave products. emWave2 is an easyto-use mobile device that trains you to respond differently to stress. By tracking your heart rate variability, the emwave2 helps you align your breathing with your heart rhythms and through changing your emotional focus, shows you how to change your physiology. emWave2’s computer interface adds the functionality to track progress through storing session information and shows a more detailed view of your heart rhythms. Use it on the go or connect to a computer to get the best of both worlds—untethered mobility, or detailed tracking and feedback through a cleanly designed desktop application.
Previous winner of the prestigious Last Gadget Standing People’s Choice Award for the original emWave, HeartMath’s personal stress relief products help people identify their stressors and then deploy highly focused, specialized techniques designed to release them. Through a biophysical process known as coherence—a physical state that emWave technology helps users attain—the heart, brain and nervous system operate in harmony and efficiency. As a result, individuals experience reduced stress, producing in the process an overall improvement in focus, energy and resilience. Presently in use by more than 10,000 health care professionals worldwide, HeartMath’s emWave technology provides measurable data that help patients achieve the level of coherence
necessary to reduce stress and anxiety. Based on nearly 20 years of research into the critical link between emotions, heart function and cognitive performance, emWave products operate on two platforms—computer-based software and portable handheld devices. emWave and the research behind it has been successful with everyday stress as well as with more serious challenges. For example veteran centers and clinics are now using the emWave with soldiers to help manage symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To learn more about HeartMath and emWave technology, visit HeartMath at booth 3222 in the North Hall, or online at www.heartmath.com. You can also follow HeartMath on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
from the crowd somehow—even if we’re keeping one foot firmly planted in the ‘comfort zone’ of what the group likes.” With these two trends in mind, Wight and Backal coined a new category they call “tech support—with style.” People need help with the tangle of electronic devices they bring with them today, and they wouldn’t mind at all if the solution helped define and announce their unique personality. “In our case,” Wight said, “that means sturdy and stylish, fashionable and functional bags that are suited, as we like to say, to ‘today’s technology-rich, onthe-go lifestyle.’ We deliver ‘style and sass’ along with ‘safety and security.’ ” jill-e designs started out as an advocate for every female photography lover who’s ever had to put up with the male-oriented look and feel of
high-quality camera bags. They met thousands of women photographers who longed for a bag with a generous helping of fashion and flair, to go along with the security and functionality their craft requires. Soon after, they realized that style transcends gender—that the male photography lover was trapped as well in a stale canvas and nylon world of black and shades of black. So they came up with the jack™ line of bags for men. Since then, jill-e designs has evolved as the market has evolved. Today they’re a maker of head-turning, professional-quality camera and carry bags for a busy, tech-savvy world— with models in every price range and for every key customer segment. There are sturdy, stylish bags for serious photographers, photo and video enthusiasts, business and leisure travelers, “day
trippers,” busy mothers, contemporary men, college students, scrapbookers, fashionistas—anyone, anywhere on the planet, who wants to look terrific living the device-dependent life. “We’ve changed how modern, onthe-go people think about the role and possibilities of their camera or carry bag,” Wight said. “We’ve transformed them into ‘statements’ that establish your personal image and creative credentials, while delivering professionallevel protection and performance. Now you can look your best while you do your best. And who wouldn’t want that?” See jill-e designs at CES booth 1035B, New Product Marketplace, North Hall, LVCC. iConnectivity (Con’t. from p. 1)
came to create this really cool product, iConnectMIDI?
ML: I have a passion for innovation. I have several in-use technology patents under my belt. So when Apple launched iOS 3.0, with its ability to connect to external hardware peripherals, I started thinking about opportunities. Within days, I found myself in a friend’s professional music studio—I was amazed how complicated and involved it was just for him to connect all that cool gear together and how many applications he had to use to do his work and deal with the delays in transmitting all of this data. It then dawned on both of us—a single high-speed device could streamline this connectivity nightmare and simultaneously open up the door for connecting to iOS devices like iPads and Etymotic Research (Con’t. from p. 1)

There are two versions of Etymotic’s Blast Plug. CEDN: That is cool. How is iConnectMIDI different from other products on the market?
ML: iConnectMIDI goes way beyond just allowing you to connect your musical devices to your computer. Think of iConnectMIDI as your new, ultra high-performance home network router—only, instead of the Internet, iConnectMIDI routes MIDI data [or digital musical event data]. With iConnectMIDI you can route your digital musical event data between your musical devices [both MIDI DIN and USB MIDI], and your iOS devices and computers. The device was built to suit any and all users—from beginners to professionals—and is capable of handling tens of thousands of events

that limits what can be done for music creativity, education and performance. I cannot wait to see what those outstanding application developers out there come up with over the next several months. CEDN: How can our readers learn more about this innovative product?
ML: iConnectivity has released some simple fundamental applications for iConnectMIDI with more on the way. But what is really interesting is the introduction of CoreMIDI framework in iOS 4.2. With CoreMIDI, Apple has provided a common interface that any iOS developer can use and release in their applications. As iConnectMIDI is one of the first hardware devices that support the CoreMIDI framework in iOS—any of these applications will be able to operate with it. By opening the use of iConnectMIDI to any application developer, it is only imagination

isn’t time to insert hearing protection. “EB15 circuitry is configured with adaptive attenuation to become a 15-dB earplug when noise levels put the user at increased risk for hearing damage,” said Dr. Mead Killion, founder of Etymotic Research and the inventor of the ERseries Blast Plugs. “Despite risk to hearing from loud machinery and sudden blasts, war fighters decline to wear hearing protection because it interferes with situational awareness and their ability to localize quieter sounds.” Noise-induced hearing loss is a growing public health concern. Many persons are at risk for hearing damage in the workplace, ranging from construction workers to backstage and front-of-house personnel at music venues. Both versions of Blast Plug are designed to restore sound that is blocked when the ear canal
is sealed. Both allow the user to hear naturally, as though there were nothing in the ears. When no loud noise is present, the EB15s return to natural hearing, as if nothing is in the ears to block sound. Electronic BlastPLG earplugs are sold on the Etymotic Research website. MSRP is $449 for EB1 (pair) and $499 for EB15 (pair). Included with each pair of EB Electronic BlastPLG earplugs is an assortment of ready-fit eartips, a filter removal tool and extra wax filters, headband for wind noise reduction, carrying pouch, one pair of ETYPlugs™ (ER-20—passive) high-fidelity earplugs and a six-month supply of batteries. Etymotic is actively seeking distribution partners and authorized dealers and will demonstrate both BlastPLG Earplug products at CES booth 4018 in the North Hall.

broadcaster, QuartaRete, announced last December the implementation of the first 3D HDTV broadcasts, free-to-air, with the 3D Tile Format. The 3D Tile Format technology allows the integration of two stereoscopic 720p frames into a single 1080p frame. The reconstructed left and right pictures keep their original resolution and will not be affected by the unbalance of the vertical and horizontal resolution. The layout of the images within this innovative solution, together with the standard compliant technologies developed by Sisvel Technology, seamlessly allows the decoding of 2D
video from the 3D transmission. The 3D Tile Format improves the quality of the transmission of 3D HD content, compared to current solutions (side-by-side or top-and-bottom) and, due to its backwards compatibility, allows broadcasters to transmit to both 2D and 3D users without having to double the amount of bandwidth required for transmissions. Moreover, it enables “single wire” content production and distribution. As compared to technologies which require a double video stream to be carried up to the broadcaster’s head end, the 3D Tile Format allows the reuse of the
infrastructures already in place for the production and distribution of HD content, without the need for significant further investments. Paolo d’Amato, CEO of Sisvel Technology, has emphasized the innovative features of 3D Tile Format system: “3D Tile Format technology introduces considerable benefits for the entire market, from operators to TV producers to consumers, and we hope that many other national and international players will soon adopt it too.” The 3D Tile Format can be found at the Sisvel exhibit located at LVCC South Hall Lower Level booth 20537.

LS: Just as with ubiquitous or emerging devices such as smartphones, smarttablets and smartTVs, now ‘Think SmartCloud,’ a user reconfigurable virtual cloud that provides a smart and easy way to store, share, sync, backup and view your personal information from a single unified window regardless of where it is located. CEDN: How does your product help consumers and small businesses?
LS: Just as with the introduction of more multiuse touch, convertible, dual screen, location aware hardware, you will see innovative, agile, context aware software. Cloud computing will into a highly compact device, which can fit into briefcases and even a pocket, so that it is truly convenient and useful for every office worker. CEDN: Why do consumers or professional users need OfficeCam?
JS: First there is the scanner, the all-inone MFCs are bulky, slow and inconvenient. When you need to scan an invoice, capture a note, you want a device that is right next to the keyboard at all times and only a click away. That is convenience that our HoverCam Office Camera can offer, given its highly compact form factor. As another example, a lot of us are receiving contracts or forms in PDF, and asked to sign and fax back. Today, this is a printsign-scan-email four-step process. We were wasting a lot of paper just for the purpose of signing. With the OfficeCam, you can capture a signature digitally, sign, and e-mail back in a single step. Secondly, video is playing an increasingly strategy.

continue to evolve towards rich cloud aggregation solutions that streamline and facilitate use of multi-vendor, hybrid cloud services. Users will be able to optimize on accessibility, collaboration and savings while enjoying a more productive, enjoyable and omnipresent digital lifestyle.
CEDN: What are important factors for successful adoption?
LS: The key factors to adoption are utility, integration and ease-of-use. Automation and increasing cloud services breadth, depth and innovation will facilitate making the cloud transparent so that it becomes as ubiquitous as the smartphone. Like the Universal Remote TV Controller that allows seamless viewing/recording across multiple TV brands, a universal cloud controller will allow for seamless intercloud computing for ultimate usability and choice—program the vital role in inter-office communication. Seeing each other on a web cam is great, but I’d say communicating your ideas, such as a design sketch, or a marketing concept, a software UI, or product demo, is more important than just seeing the other person. An OfficeCam give users the ability for HD videoconferencing and a shared whiteboard. You can even annotate right on top of the video. You can also directly project video onto a whiteboard in a conference room. I believe OfficeCam can play an important and essential role like a mouse and a keyboard in the digital age office.
CEDN: What new models are you announcing this year at CES?

The Neo comes with 3, 5, and 9 megapixel lenses, weighs 1.5 lbs, fits into any briefcase, and can complement any desktop. It can output or record 1080p full the body, tablets and online health care solutions.
