The new line will include models based on all 4G technologies and applicable frequencies. The first product released to ship will be the Wilson 4G AWS, which boosts signals on the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum band. The 4G AWS is designed for indoor installation and is expected to have a suggested retail price of $399.00. In the U.S., it will extend connection range and increase data-transfer speeds in weak signal areas for devices that support TMobile’s HSPA+ network. The 4G AWS will also provide signal boost for customers of various rural wireless carriers that use the AWS band for fixed broadband service.

“The 4G AWS booster should provide the most benefit to customers in rural areas who are hoping to use AWS as a replacement to the slower, satellite Internet connections currently available,” said Joe Banos, COO of Wilson Electronics. “Wilson’s booster should help with coverage issues many residents in these areas are sure to face.” The 4G boosters will be showcased at the Wilson Electronics booth during the International CTIA Wireless 2011 Expo in Orlando, Fla., in booth 4633 of the Orange County Convention Center. Wilson has been a leader in the wireless communications industry for more than 40 years. The company designs and manufactures a wide variety of cell

phone signal boosters, antennas and related components that significantly improve cellular communication in mobile, indoor, and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications. Wilson products are engineered, assembled and tested in the company’s U.S.-based headquarters. All Wilson boosters comply with FCC regulations for cellular devices and are FCC-type accepted and Industry Canada certificated. Wilson Electronics has developed and patented a variety of technologies for protecting cell sites by preventing network interference. along with associated CE products, rate plans, applications, and accessories across their estate. Ensuring that the correct marketing mix [price, product information, promotions including service/accessory bundles] and the associated message for each customer segment was conveyed accurately at the POP in each store was impractical using a paper price/fact-tag process. Finally, precise and comprehensive reporting tools did not exist to allow ongoing adjustments to marketing and merchandising programs in-store that would improve the consistency of the customer experience.

MEET MOZIDO: MORE THAN JUST A MOBILE WALLET, ALSO MOBILE FINANCIAL SERVICES When Mozido started in 2007, eons ago in technology time, they thought using your mobile phone to make financial transactions could be a good idea. Fast forward to now, and boy, were they right. But unlike some mWallets out there now, Mozido’s solution does so much more. Across mobile phones, through point-of-sale terminals, over the Internet: Mozido offers services millions of customers need every day. You Wilson Electronics Inc. (Con’t. from p. 1)

But in the real world, actual 4G network speeds will depend on several factors, just as 3G data transfer rates do. For example, if the user is competing with many other users for the spectrum, or if they’re trying to access the data from inside a concrete or metal building, the signal will be weakened and network performance degraded. To overcome those weak-signal situations, Wilson Electronics, manufacturer of North America’s top-selling line of cellular signal boosters, has announced a new product group of 4G signal boosters scheduled for release in early-to-mid-2011. MicroSigns (Con’t. from p. 1)

MP: MicroSigns is a North American company specializing in digital merchandising solutions for cell phone retailers. Retailers are turning to MicroSigns as a cost-effective and far more impactful alternative to the traditional processes and paper-based fact tags that have been used for years to help merchandisefeatured handsets in their stores.

WW: What represents MicroSigns’ primary target customer segment?

MP: MicroSigns works exclusively with cell phone retailers, whether through the carriers’ retail organizations or their reseller channels, to improve channel control over their brick and mortar retail estate. I say exclusively, but consumer

Wireless World

WW: Can you give our readers an example of a customer’s business requirement that MicroSigns was asked to address?

MP: A tier-1 carrier wanted to enhance management control over its retail channel through improved planning, execution, and measurement of visual merchandising programs across a specific segment of 160 owned and agentmanaged retail locations. Every month their retail department manages a product and service portfolio of over 90 handsets

WW: How did implementing the MicroSigns platform help this customer achieve their business objective? MP: The MicroSigns platform replaces the paper price/fact tags with a wireless 3.5” interactive LCD display and delivers back-office workflow control through a central [SaaS] MicroManager system that manages content, product planograms, WLANs, and the MicroPlayer network. By implementing the MicroSigns platform, our customer addressed each of these internal business requirements: • Improve the planning, execution and measurement of visual merchandising programs that use defined product segments―for example Smartphones―and customer lifestyle segments, like ‘Business,’ ‘Music,’ ‘Fun,’ ‘Family,’ for linking handsets, rate plans, services, sales promotions, product placement, and

WW: And by doing so, what measurable results were observed by your customer?

MP: Aggregate conformity, as defined by the accurate marketing mix being associated with the right product and placed at the planned merchandising position, is being measured at above 90 percent across all stores within 24 hours of visual-merchandising program implementation. Also, our customer observed a measurable reduction of back-office and in-store labor costs associated with the planning, execution and measurement of their VM campaign. On the shop floor, MicroPlayers are being widely used by sales associates and customers, resulting in a shorter in-store sales cycle and improved basket size. WW: What’s next for Microsigns?

MP: The success of this initial implementation has led to expansion into other international markets managed under the corporate group brand. 2011 is making out to be a busy year and we’re looking forward to helping our customers increase their competitiveness in this very challenging retail environment. While this product line isn’t new to the market, Nite Ize is launching new sizes that will accommodate large-screen smart phones as EL: StreamDialer allows the user to access an international call from a domestic network. The call is signaled on the data network but made on the voice network, so there’s almost no delay due to DTMF out-pulsing, which doesn’t exist in our solution. The call quality is as good as any other cellular call. WW: Who are your target end users?

EL: We’re working with calling card providers, IXCs, and VoIP hosting companies that want to extend their offerings to the mobile space, as well as enterprise innovative solutions to help our clients improve effectiveness and efficiencies throughout their organizations. We believe there should be a cohesive flow between people, process and technology. At iQmetrix, we focus on innovation and customer service, with the goal of creating the ultimate retail experience for the customer, the employee and the overall business. WW: Are you introducing any new products this year? Who are your target end users?

CK: We are very excited to launch our new XQ Interactive Retail platform this year at CTIA 2011. XQ bridges the gap between online shopping and brick-andmortar retail, transforming the in-store experience with interactive digital media solutions that guide shoppers through the process of buying a mobile device. Just as RQ4 facilitated back-end processes for retailers, XQ will simplify the front-end experience for customers. Our target XQ users are wireless dealers intent on delivering the ultimate interactive shopping experience to their customers. WW: Compare XQ’s position and its technology against the current market.

CK: With XQ Interactive Retail, we are shaping the wireless customer experience in a new and innovative way. XQ is unique in the digital signage industry because of our use of interactive solutions versus static digital signs. XQ transforms the in-store experience with a suite of dynamic digital media solutions that entertain, educate and guide shoppers through the

well as devices that are retrofitted with form fit covers. We have seen a surge in the use of products like OtterBox over the past year, and we want to provide a rugged holster solution for devices with those covers. WW: To what do you attribute your company’s success?

RC: The success we’ve seen at Nite Ize, particularly in the mobile and telecom channel, directly relates to our focus on providing high quality, innovative products and accessories to the consumer. We are constantly developing new items, listening to the consumer and watching industry trends to identify areas where the Nite Ize style of Innovation and creativity will shine. process of buying a mobile device.

WW: Please assess the marketplace as it relates to RQ4 and looking ahead to XQ.

CK: With RQ4, iQmetrix has become the North American market leader for wireless retail management software. We have worked closely with carriers and value-added product providers to establish a diverse partnership network of over two dozen companies, encompassing all aspects of wireless retail, making RQ4 the most comprehensive solution on the market. By combining the back-end management of RQ4 with the front-end customer experience of XQ, we’re again looking to put our stamp on the North American wireless retail landscape.

WW: Tell our readers about your trade show objectives, plans, products, promotions, etc.

CK: The key for us at CTIA is to unveil our XQ Interactive Retail solutions and demonstrate the value they bring to a wireless retail store. We want to give attendees a tour of the platform and allow them to experience the look and feel of XQ’s intuitive stream and browse interfaces. Essentially, we want to show retailers the experience they can ultimately offer their customers.

information, territory assignments, drive times and any record field that can be associated with an address or geocode. In many ways, location has become the glue that allows organizations to make connections across disparate systems and data types. Consider the simple example of a cell tower. Geospatial data links potential tower sites to elevation, coverage areas, customer households, buildings and obstructions, land use plans, population distributions, tax jurisdictions, terrain and surface analysis, atmospheric conditions and real estate availability—just to name a few. But most organizations struggle when it comes to managing spatial data. Think about the challenges you and your CDMA (Con’t. from p. 1)

around the world. It is the official certification authority for CDMA 2000 devices. The CCF certification process allows vendors and operators to bring new devices to market at a fraction of the time and cost of earlier processes. Bruce Jolly, General Manager and CFO of the CCF, talks about the role of CCF within the CDMA industry. WW: What does the CCF contribute to the CDMA industry?

BJ: The CCF is a forum of the CDMA industry’s leaders that believe certification is a critical part of the ‘before market’ process. We believe that by bringing to the market quality products that have been thoroughly tested and that all meet the same minimum requirements, we ensure consumers’ satisfaction and

save money by eliminating expensive middlemen. It also gives them the ability to maintain quality control of their own products, which is just a dream for other suppliers of cell phone accessories in this market. Having its own factory also allows the company to be innovative in its designs, which is evident from the look of its high quality and beautiful cell

team face: • Users waste too much time searching for the data they need. • Data is not well defined, and the wrong data sets may be loaded. • Data collection and cleanup efforts are duplicated. • Useful data sets go unused because few know they exist. • Experts spend their days helping colleagues search—instead of analyzing the data. • Several individuals make and keep their own copies of data tables.

If these problems sound familiar, you are not alone. Corporations have spent billions of dollars to create, update and maintain this geospatial data. In many cases, this information is impossible to find, difficult to

networks’ health, thus making CDMA devices a symbol of quality. The CCF process sets high standards of quality across the industry and has taken a lot of confusion out of the overall CDMA testing process. The objective of the CCF is to evolve its certification process so it always meets new industry standards and evolving technology. WW: What are the benefits of using the CCF certification process for CDMA vendors?

BJ: The use of one common test plan and test process allows vendors to understand and master one set of certification requirements early in their device development process. This way, vendors can ensure their devices will meet agreed-upon industry quality requirements, greatly increasing the probability of hitting their market window. Meeting Please tell us about that.

DP: CMAS is a critical part of the upgrade to our U.S. national security infrastructure as directed by Congress in the Warning and Response Network Act (“WARN Act”) passed in late 2006. In implementing CMAS, the FCC has worked with the wireless industry to leverage the proliferation of mobile devices to more effectively provide timely emergency alerts and notifications to all US citizens.

WW: How can the carrier best satisfy the CMAS requirements?

DP: The FCC orders for CMAS are “technology neutral,” so each carrier may choose to implement the service in a way that makes the most sense for them, both technically and economically. As a practical matter, we at Velleros believe that an evolutionary approach to CMAS

WW: And the benefits for CDMA operators?

BJ: Operators enjoy greater efficiencies in their acceptance process. Devices entering their process are of a higher quality level. Consequently, wireless network operators taking advantage of CCF certification have seen their acceptance test time reduced by a factor of three since adopting the new strategy.

As a result, operators’ engineers can focus on more important tasks such as differentiating their services in a highly competitive market. implementation will make the most sense. By that, we mean that carriers can leverage their existing voice and SMS network capabilities to get started, and then take advantage of new technologies such as cell broadcast as they are deployed in a timeframe that fits naturally within the carrier’s business plan.

WW: Is CMAS a service that carriers can charge their subscribers for?

DP: The FCC orders actually prohibit the carriers from charging a subscription fee for CMAS; therefore, many carriers view CMAS as simply another emergency services cost burden on their business. Velleros takes a different approach to CMAS by implementing it as a mobile-content service on our VAST platform. This enables carriers to take advantage of new Web-based content and service delivery to their subscribers in combination with contextual mobile marketing and advertising. can have their orders delivered almost anywhere in the U.S., including Hawaii. your company. What’s your main line of business?

MP: Peabody RFTC Concealment Systems is a division of Peabody Engineering Corporation in Corona, Calif. We specialize in Radio Frequency Transparent Concealment Systems [RFTC]. In lay terms, we make structures to hide cell site antenna arrays in an environmentally friendly way, with minimal visual impact. We do not make the fake trees with antennas sticking out; we make architectural features that integrate into building designs, clock towers, church steeples, etc. that are not visible in the environment. WW: What would you say makes your company unique?

MP: Our method of manufacturing: we pre-fabricate the structures in our factory for form and fit, and then ship them in assembled sections to the jobsite where they are normally crane-lifted and installed in a few hours, as opposed to several days of on-site labor and installation.

WW: What advantages do your enclosures offer over other concealment manufacturers?

MP: Since we custom-make each piece AFL Global (Con’t. from p. 1)

“wireless” call is wireless … no landlines or physical lines required. It makes sense with so many cell towers popping up all over. Most of us in the business realize that “something” is connecting all those towers to each other and to network hubs and switching centers. Most mobile calls route through some portion of a wireline network. 4G/LTE will begin to bypass some of these wireline connections. With the acquisition of AT&T Wireless, BellSouth, and Cingular, AT&T has created a more seamless integration of wireless and wireline networks. Verizon has similar networks, but the relationship of Verizon and Verizon Wireless (45 percent owned by Vodafone) leads to some different behavior. As the network evolves, wireless and wireline distinctions blur. With the exception of the radio equipment, towers Floatograph (Con’t. from p. 1)

your company. What’s your main line of business?

KL: Floatograph Technologies is a veteran-owned business that supplies telescoping masts and tactical trailer systems to a wide variety of industries that need to gain an elevated platform and/or have mobile power generation and climate controlled computer enclosure options. WW: Where is your current product emphasis at CTIA?

KL: For the wireless community, our military-proven advanced tactical trailers and masts offer efficient mobile groundbased solutions for reliable disaster relief

in our plant, they are exactly matched to the structure they are being installed upon. Every detail, including color, texture and design feature, is captured in our pre-fab job walk and detailed in our CAD design phase. Most of our competitors ship pallets of sheet and structural components for on-site assembly and installation, yielding variable quality results depending upon the installation team’s level of experience.

WW: I would suspect that your manufacturing methods are more costly than pallets of materials to be assembled on-site; does that mean your product costs more?

MP: When considering only the concealment structure, our products appear more expensive, and for good reason; they’re completely assembled, textured and painted before they ship to ensure perfection when they arrive. Once on-site, our structures are usually installed in less than a day. When you buy the lower-cost parts on a pallet system, you have to pay for a team of 5 or 6 construction workers on a rooftop for several days to put it all together. At prevailing wages, that adds up quickly. Overall, installed costs for our preassembled systems are lower as a result.

WW: Beyond a competitive installed cost, what else should be considered when procuring concealments?

MP: The quality of materials is very important. All of our materials have been certified by an independent test lab for RF compatibility, and produce well below 1dB of signal loss across the RF spectrum from 700 MHz all the way up to 28 GHz and beyond. Our standard products are also Class I Flame Retardant and each project is structurally engineered, stamped and certified by a professional engineer licensed in the state of the cell site. WW: What limitations or concerns are there on concealment structures that people need to look out for?

MP: As in all businesses, there are varying degrees of quality available. In this economy, there are lots of people looking for new business opportunities, so we are seeing fabricators coming out of other industries trying to capture new business by low-balling prices, not knowing the strict requirements in this market. Many products available have not been properly tested for suitability in an RF environment. Sometime the wrong coatings or finishing materials are used, further degrading signal quality. Products that are not fire-rated are being routinely used to cut costs, but at what price from an environmental and safety standard?

homework. They need to insure that their provider has expertise in the cellular marketplace and their products are supported by proper testing and material documentation so they are sure to get what they are expecting. It always pays to ask for references of previous installations, satisfied customers, etc.

WW: How about approvals? Do all major carriers and all states approve your products? Is this true of all concealment manufacturers? MP: Peabody RFTC Concealment Systems are approved by all major carriers and we have hundreds of sites from coast to coast that have been up and running for well over 10 years. We work with certified professional engineers in all 50 states, insuring our products will meet all code requirements before they leave our plant. I am not sure that everyone who offers products in this market can make the same claims, so I encourage you to be careful when choosing whom to work with. and antennas, wireless and wireline equipment are quite similar, if not identical. Between 80 to 90 percent of AT&T/Verizon Capital Expenditures (CapEx) directly or indirectly support a wireless connection. The phenomenal explosion of broadband data will guarantee the steady deployment of equipment and infrastructure for a few years to come. The numbers are clear: AT&T and Verizon each have nearly 100 million wireless subscribers each. The growth of wireless services will continue, as will the decline of wired access lines. Wireless and wireline networks have converged to transport and distribute wireless call connections. This synergy is not necessarily unique, but it does present opportunities (and challenges) for the services vendors and suppliers who build and install electronics and infrastructure. Just as equipment manufacturers have evolved from mostly wireline solutions to wireless solutions, so too must

those vendors providing engineering, installation, and construction services. The 1984 divestiture of AT&T gave birth to a number of Engineer, Furnish, and Install (EF&I) companies. Their origin and service offerings were closely aligned with the wireline networks of that time. Cellular technology was in its infancy. Over the next decade, significant advances were made in cellular technology and some services vendors began to take notice of the opportunities of the wireless world. The result was new services vendors focused on the needs of wireless providers. Many focused primarily on construction of cell site compounds and towers. Equipment manufacturers focused on the development of cellular equipment and handled its deployment. With expertise in detailed engineering, construction, installation, and maintenance of wireless networks, the services division of AFL is dedicated to

supporting Wireless Service Providers. AFL’s knowledge and proven experience is based on wireline network experience―the same origin of today’s wireless network. As the industry evolved, AFL evolved and positioned itself for the industry needs of today. AFL provides equipment installation services for Mobile Switching Centers, network hubs, cell sites, and backhaul; they also have dedicated resources that perform transport, DC power, and radio equipment installs. AFL provides cell site civil construction services, lines and antenna installs and augments, and turnkey support. The convergence of wireless and wireline networks enables AFL to diversify its workforce, supporting today’s and tomorrow’s wireless customer needs.
