HUCK FASTENERS POSITIONED FOR GROWTH IN THE SOLAR INDUSTRY 4
Thursday, October 20, 201
Huck, a division of Alcoa Fastening Systems specializing in engineered fasteners, is working in partnership with several solar manufacturers to develop customized solutions to joining challenges. With more than 40 years of experience in the design and engineering of application-specific fasteners, Huck is well positioned to lead the industry in the development of the next generation of engineered fasteners for solar applications. These applications include frame joining for parabolic troughs as well as photovoltaic frames.
The main advantage of Huck fasteners as compared to conventional nuts and bolts is that every Huck fastener is engineered, rather than just manufactured. Said Huck Senior Design Engineer, Troy Pierce, “There are several key design differences that Huck engineers into every fastener, including blind bolts used in solar applications that make a huge difference in performance when compared to the competition.” He added, “You can find knock-offs of our blind bolts, but you won’t find anything on the market as strong and vibration resistant as a Huck.
SOLARDOCKʼS PATENTED SYSTEM SOLVES CLIMATE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGES More power. Less work. The next generation of solar. SolarDock’s patented, lightweight solar module mounting system combines a high-tilt angle of up to 35 degrees with the only truly non-penetrating design. SOLAR REPORT SIMPLIFIES ROOFTOP PANEL LAYOUT Bob Grant, Executive Vice President, EagleView Technologies talks about the report. SPDN: What is a Solar Report?
BG: EagleView’s Solar Report provides a 3-D model of the roof with guaranteed accurate measurements including line lengths, pitch, solar orientation, azimuth details and a grid layout to assist in panel placement.
SPDN: How does this report benefit installers?
BG: There is no longer a need for timeconsuming hand measurements or
hours spent creating a drawing in CAD. EagleView’s Solar Report is available in a CAD format and features a grid overlay of 1' x 1'squares. The diagrams provide the ability for solar installers to accurately calculate material needs and the overall positioning of solar equipment. SPDN: Tell us about the industry’s acceptance and use of the reports.
BG: The response has been phenomenal. EagleView began providing roof measurement reports to the construction and insurance industries in 2008. With the growth in solar popularity, and the addition of many state incentive programs,

With a friendly business environment and low cost of living, the Dallas area is fortunate to have talented people from the telecom, defense, and semi-conductor industries that now work in renewable energy. AEG Power Solutions has design, sales, marketing, and finance in our Plano office, a suburb north of Dallas. In December of 2009, we installed a 50kW PV system on our roof. It’s been a great our customers began asking for a report to help with solar installations. Our Solar Report was released in 2010 and has seen steady growth in the market. One of our goals is to provide a reliable source of accurate information to the contractor. The report not only saves them time, but provides the critical information they need to accurately assess a project’s potential solar value. SPDN: Does the report offer any additional features?
BG: The reports have turned out to be a great sales tool for our customers. In addition to the CAD files, the report is delivered as a PDF file and provides the option for the installer to customize a cover page with their logo and contact information. This is a powerful tool for use in the sales presentation to the property owner. The report has a very profes-
way to lower our monthly energy bill and use the power in our lab. Over the past 60 years, AEG Power Solutions has provided mission critical power control and power systems to selected end markets such as power generation, oil & gas and the solar energy industry. This year we are introducing our Protect PV.500 Solar Inverter to the US. This 500kW inverter with an efficiency greater than 98 percent is ideal for utility-scale deployment. The photovoltaic industry is rapidly expanding and so are the aspirations of PV module manufacturers, with many looking to sell their products in multiple countries and regions around the world. But modules must be certified before they can access markets, and the rising number of PV products combined with a limited number of accredited testing labs has led to longer certification times. These delays can often lead to cost overruns, loss of market share, reduced profitability and lowered brand ranking. The good news is that module manufacturers can significantly reduce the risk of certification delays by making smart choices early in the design of their products. By selecting a testing lab such as Intertek that is accredited to certify modules in North America, Europe and the major Asian markets, a manufacturer can gain access to more than 40 countries
after completing just one set of tests. Using one lab can cut certification time down to as little as one-third what it would be when using multiple labs in different countries. Start Early. Begin certifying a new PV module before its design is complete. This ultimately will speed up the time to market. Manufactures that wait too long to begin module certification risk delays and might have to rework some components after they thought their designs were done. Intertek’s Preliminary Design Review service is intended to assist manufacturers to identify applicable standards and potential design flaws that may impede certification. This step in the process can help to save considerable time and money. Only Use Certified Components. Each component that goes into the finished module must comply with certain stan-
KEY STEPS TO RAPID GLOBAL PV MODULE CERTIFICATION
TÜV RHEINLAND PTL RECEIVES OSHA APPROVAL FOR ANSI/UL 1703 CERTIFICATION
Certification for key North American Photovoltaic safety requirement
TÜV Rheinland PTL, LLC, North America’s largest solar and photovoltaic testing company, was approved by the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) to provide certification for ANSI/UL1703, the required North American solar safety mark. The accreditation is the latest in TÜV Rheinland´s comprehensive portfolio of testing and photovoltaic certifications to help clients penetrate the global marketplace. Worldwide, photovoltaic solar module manufacturers and the suppliers of related components consider the U.S.A. a large target market, according to industry analysts. ANSI/UL 1703 certification is
currently one of the pivotal regulatory requirements to launch photovoltaic products in the U.S. marketplace. “We are very pleased by the accreditation of our North American certification body from OSHA. The elevation of status as a Nationally Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) for TÜV Rheinland PTL will give TÜV Rheinland Group another of the key pieces to service our clients globally,” said Richard Bozicevich, North American Business Field Manager for Solar Services. “With this accreditation we can leverage the expertise and geographic reach of the TÜV Rheinland network to better service clients across the globe.” Around 80 percent of all solar module manufacturers have their products tested at TÜV Rheinland to obtain national and

PM: Yes. We are introducing our renewable Dynalene Solar Glycol-XT, which is a new formula for high temperature solar thermals applications. It offers a lower viscosity and is made from domestically grown corn. We are also officially launching our line of molten salts for CSP applications: Dynalene MS-1 and Dynalene MS-2. These molten salts can be used for either thermal storage or as a heat transfer fluid. SPDN: Where is your current product emphasis?
PM: Currently Dynalene is moving toward developing fluids for renewable energy systems. We have developed the
dards. Intertek has found that one of the most frequent causes of module non-compliance is the use of components that aren’t properly certified. By working with a lab to perform a design review, problems are identified early and the eventual certification testing can move more quickly. Select the Right Lab. If you’re looking to certify modules with innovative technology that’s unlike any products previously on the market, a lab with PV expertise is better equipped to develop the right test plan and apply generic requirements to that new technology. In addition, a lab that is accredited to certify modules under both ANSI/UL requirements for the US and Canada, and the CB Scheme for EU and Asia can offer certification for the two sets of requirements and significantly shorten your time to market. Intertek meets all of these requirements, and more. Develop a Smart Test Plan. An experienced test lab will help you streaminternational market licenses. TÜV Rheinland operates test laboratories for solar modules and systems in six locations worldwide: Cologne, Germany; Shanghai, China; Taichung, Taiwan; Yokohama, Japan; and Bangalore, India as well as a U.S. facility in Tempe, Arizona at TÜV Rheinland PTL. Nearly 200 experts specializing in solar technologies work at the existing test centers.
About TÜV Rheinland PTL, LLC Based in Tempe, Ariz., TÜV Rheinland PTL, LLC is a leading provider of safety and performance testing and market certification serving every sector of the photovoltaic and solar thermal marketplace, from the supply chain through installation. TÜV Rheinland PTL is a member of the TÜV Rheinland Group, which has the largest network of solar energy laboratories worldwide, with six major laboratories on three continents. The lab was formed as a unique partnership between Arizona State University, an institution with more than 50 years of research on
Solar Glycol-XT, molten salts for solar and GeoGlycol for geothermal uses. We have also developed a fuel cell coolant, Dynalene FC. SPDN: Please assess the marketplace as it relates to your product line.
PM: As far as our products and the marketplace goes, there are very few products like ours out there. There is the standard propylene glycol and ethylene glycol, but BioGlycol, Solar Glycol-XT, and Dynalene MS-1 and MS-2 are fairly unique products. There is a need for renewable fluids for renewable application, and Dynalene is filling that need. T.R.A.-MAGE Founder Terry Anderson took a moment from his busy schedule to discuss his company’s many benefits.
SPDN: Tell our readers a little about your company. What’s your main line of business? What would you say makes your company unique?

company with the intent to engineer my products from the fail point of the system, not just the fail point of the product. This concept of engineering an entire system made us unique. When we branched out to include solar mounting and rail systems, we followed the same pattern of engineering from the fail point of the solar mounting system. SPDN: Are you introducing any new products?

NEW WELDED PATCH FOR SOLAR ROOFS BY ECOFASTEN SOLAR
For use on membrane roofs, the Bulls Eye Target Patch by EcoFasten Solar is designed to provide a versatile new means of mechanical attachment using a fastener and a welded patch. The fastener is installed using an increasingly common detail that the roofing industry accepts as a non-penetrating assembly, thereby eliminating roof warranty concerns. Within the commercial roofing industry there is a procedure whereby an installer can bond PVC and TPO membranes to specially coated roof deck plates. Using this widely accepted roof-
ing process, the Bulls Eye Target Patch assembly can be bonded to a modified deck plate in a controlled factory setting. Installation of the Bulls Eye Target Patch is quick and simple. First, the installer determines where an attachment is needed and marks that location on the roof. This area is then cleaned to promote a strong weld between the roof membrane and the patch itself. A deck screw (OMG-XHD fasteners used during testing) is then tightened down to the thickness of our fastener head depth gauge. This will leave a slight gap between the
Solar Power Daily News oping a new EZ Mount Clamp-on for standing seam metal roofs. We believe it is the best on the solar market because it:
• Attaches to the rib with a carriage bolt design which means it doesn’t penetrate the roofs surface, the threads won’t strip, and you cannot over torque it • Greater surface area which means not rails are required • Four or more pressure points with means added strength and security • Is made of the similar metals which means no galvanic corrosion • Has a unique feature allowing the copper grounding wire to attach • Custom built to fit all standing seam rib underside of the fastener head and the surface of the membrane. The Bulls Eye Target Patch assembly slides onto the shaft of the fastener by means of a key slot in our custom deck plate. This design component allows the plate to slide on to the exposed fastener head, creating a structural connection between the roof deck and the Bulls Eye Target Patch assembly. The installer then welds the patch into place around the fastener to seal the roof. What truly sets the Bulls Eye Target Patch apart is that failure has been engineered into the upper portion of the assembly. This new, pioneering approach to rooftop attachment means that during extreme weather, or a seismic event, the

INOVATEUS SOLAR FEATURES NEW GE SOLAR-POWERED ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING CARPORT AT THE SPI SHOW Solar Power Daily News
Inovateus Solar Partners with GE Energy Industrial Solutions on One of the Largest Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in North America; learn more at booth 831
Thursday, October 20, 201 Kanczuzewski, president of Inovateus Solar LLC. “We are excited to collaborate with GE on this important alternative energy development and education project and look forward to other future projects. Our joint exhibit of a carport charging station in booth number 831 at the SPI Show is a harbinger of collaborations to come.” The carport incorporates GE’s infrastructure technology, utilizing GE EverGold™ Safety Switches and GE Combiner Boxes along with the GE EV Charging Stations. GE’s core AC equipment safely distributes the power generated from the solar panels. The GE EV Solar Carport connects to the grid, where it deposits extra energy and withdraws that energy when needed. Key Inovateus supplier/partners included Schott Solar for the PV panels and Satcon for the two 100 kW inverters. Inovateus subcontracted the electrical work to Power Systems Electrical Contractors in Farmington, Connecticut. As the general contractor, Inovateus hired Solaire Generation of New York to install a custom version of its Premium Solar Parking Power Plant. The
cantilevered roof design protects vehicles and people from the elements while preventing unwanted access to PV panels and electrical systems—including six charging stations. The canopy design also captures and redirects rainwater and snowmelt with its unique decking, gutter and drain system. “Inovateus assembled an exceptional group of contractors for this project. Solaire Generation was thrilled to have been selected as the solar canopy provider,” says Brian Cuff, director of design and construction. “This project illustrates a truly exciting vision―the integration of GE charging stations, GE power distribution equipment, and solar canopy structures. We believe that it’s a model of integration that may quickly become standard for this type of installation.” See the Inovateus Solar/GE Carport in booth 831. Declining prices increase corporate pain in the short-term, but will be highly beneficial to the survivors. With module ASPs approaching $1/W in many markets, solar PV is being reexamined as an affordable option for on- and off-grid energy generation. Regional markets such as Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa have seen an uptick in solar activity. Lower prices mean that attention is paid to locations where high electricity prices are making solar a compelling solution, rather than sales strategies that have primarily been directed toward following the most generous incentive policies. This article is based on the Solarbuzz Quarterly report. Inovateus Solar LLC, a national solar power distributor and integrator, recently partnered with GE Energy Industrial Solutions on the installation of one of North America’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the GE facility in Plainville, Conn. The project is now posted to the innovative and educational Inovateus Solar PV PowerUp channel on YouTube. The Inovateus Solar PV PowerUp channel on YouTube now features 22 educational, Inovateus Solar product and project videos. The dedication for the project took place on May 26, 2011 with CEO of GE Energy Industrial Solutions, Luis Ramírez, joined by Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, along with GE and Inovateus Solar contractors and employees, to unveil the GE Electric
Vehicle (EV) Solar Carport in Plainville, Connecticut. GE uses solar energy and smart grid technology to fully charge up to 13 electric vehicles per day via six Level 2 GE EV Charging Stations. The solar panels on the 216-foot by 40-foot, 40-stall carport will also power all the lighting in the parking lot to offset an additional $10,000 in energy costs each year. The GE EV Solar Carport produces the energy equivalent to power 20 homes per year. The average freestanding home uses approximately 7,000 to 10,000 kW hours per year. With greater than a 25year lifespan, the EV Solar Carport will annually deliver 125 MW hours via 100 kW DC power. Inovateus Solar started the project in December, 2010 and completed it in late May, 2011, on time and on budget. “Our objective with this project is to utilize a mix of installation formats to create a practical on-site ‘lab’ to illustrate a range of design options when creating this type of solar system,” says TJ

at the beginning of next year. Despite weaker than anticipated shipments in 1H’11, most manufacturers have maintained Y/Y growth guidance of more than 30 percent. The most bullish guidance is being offered by Tier 1 Chinese manufacturers who, despite missing guidance in Q1’11 and Q2’11, have maintained their full year 2011 outlooks. This contrasts markedly with Western module manufacturers who have had to cut production and shipment targets in the face of declining ASPs and increasing inventories. Whether manufacturers can meet their 2H’11 shipment guidance will primarily depend on the greater market response to price declines and the procurement strategies of downstream companies.
Meanwhile, production capacity growth in 2012 is forecast to remain strong. Should production levels follow a similar utilization path as this year, total global production would be more than 37 GW in 2012, an approximate 50 percent increase over the expected 2011 level. A significant part of the capacity increment is being financed by the Chinese government and development banks, which will incentivize more production than might otherwise be pursued through a strict assessment of end-market needs. A persistent oversupply situation into 2012 will maintain the downward pressure on prices and margins to the point where even the lowest cost producers could see negative bottom lines next year. Companies will be tested by their ability to rapidly access the undeveloped demand potential that will emerge as some regional market segments reach grid-parity. However, the pace of end-market growth now

SOLAR SUPPLY AND DEMAND OUT OF ALIGNMENT By Michael Barker, Analyst, Solarbuzz
In 2010, excess capacity and aggressive solar module production led to rapid market expansion. For many manufacturers, there was an acceptable corporate tradeoff between revenue growth and lower margins. The 2011 story is quite different, because strong end-market growth has not been in the equation this year. Only those manufacturers that have been able to utilize a low-cost base to take market share have been able to deliver acceptable bottom line performance. The 2012 picture looks even more challenging as the supply/demand situation is likely to remain out of balance, and the margin headroom that existed at the beginning of 2011 will not be present

The utilization of super-sized (1 kW+) modules manufactured on-site at a “solar breederh factory is a promising approach for significantly reducing systems costs to levels that will drive expansion of the industry and permit utilities to meet increasingly stringent renewable portfolio standard targets. Conventional PV modules provide a maximum power output of between 230270 watts. Larger modules, up to 400 watts, have been recently introduced and are targeted specifically at the utility market. Super-sized modules, more than double this size, can provide even greater benefit for PV utilities. Such larger modules, approximately 5.5-ft by 12.5-ft,

The solar utility PV market is experiencing significant growth that will continue for the foreseeable future. Utilities are expected to add over 20-GW of solar PV to their generation portfolios by 2020. The rapid growth in market demand is driving development of utility-scale solar projects such as grid-tied solar farm systems of 25 to 200-MW. These farms will consist primarily of crystalline silicon (x-Si) modules due to utility demands for reliability, high efficiency, a proven track record, and demonstrated 20-year life span, as well as overall cost considerations. Despite significant recent declines in module pricing, cost still remains a major prohibitive factor for large-scale devel-

provide significant cost savings by lowering materials, BOS, and installation expenses. Total predicted savings approach $0.50/watt. This cost reduction would translate into billions of dollars in cost savings over the next decade for the rapidly growing utility market segment. In particular, super-sized modules offer: • Faster installation • Fewer field failures/Higher reliability • Fewer DC connections and grounding points • Reduced wire management • Reduced handling • Significantly fewer mechanical fasteners • A single DC/DC power conditioner or DC/AC inverter Due to their size, it is more difficult and expensive to transport very large modules over long distances. This provides an incentive for local module manufacturing at the solar farm site or at centralized locations with multiple customers nearby. For on-site production, a module factory would be situated adjacent to or within a solar farm site. Solar cells would be delivered to the site, and modules would be manufactured and

transported short distances from the factory to the install location. Importantly, the transportation constraint does not apply to the key materials that go into a solar module, i.e., the solar cells, which are small, light and can be tightly packed. Capital expenditures for a module factory are modest in comparison to the overall expenses associated with a solar farm installation. The building expenses are quickly offset by savings realized from the larger module design. Furthermore, at the completion of the project, the factory can be decommissioned and the equipment relocated to another solar farm site to continue production. Module manufacturing equipment required to produce super-sized modules is similar in design and cost to that used for conventional modules. The overall cost savings provided and modest investment required makes a solar breeder factory with capability of producing super-sized modules a compelling alternative for construction of utility-scale solar farms. INDEPENDENT REVIEWS AND ASSESSMENT OF LARGE SOLAR PROJECTS
Thursday, October 20, 201 are conveniently connected to the adjacent distributed inverter system creating shorter DC runs. Energy density is increased by the continuous placement of modules and reflectors on the roof, thereby eliminating the space required between rows of traditional solar panels. Increased roof utilization is also created because the shade tolerant RAIS Wave system can be placed near roof obstructions, such as vent pipes and HVAC equipment, where traditional solar PV systems cannot be located. The RAIS WAVE also sheds snow significantly faster than traditional low-angle solar PV racking systems. The RAIS Wave’s proprietary reflector design features a 3M™ Cool Mirror Film that minimizes added heat and minimizes UV ray exposure in the light it adds to the solar modules.
Another key feature of the RAIS WAVE system is the built-in safety monitoring in each and every RAIS PV module. A tenKsolar RAIS Wave system does not operate until it’s connected to a complete, and safe, circuit and instantly shuts off whenever disconnected. Because the system operates below 60VDC, it also means there is zero practical risk of lethal shock. Firefighters responding to a fire know they can safely do their jobs if the building employs a tenKsolar RAIS Wave system. The RAIS module also offers additional protection from undetectable low current ground faults as each module is equipped with a ground fault detection circuit to compliment the inverter’s ground fault detection circuitry. As solar projects increase in size and complexity, more elements of project development and project construction become material to make financial decisions. For smaller projects, the challenges faced by large utility scale projects are many times non-issues. The typical challenges for large projects include, but are not limited to, permitting, access to transmission and technology risks, which encompasswarranty and production guarantees. With smaller projects, there is typically no performance guarantee, no need to access transmission since many are behind the meter and permitting issues are often limited to local jurisdictional electrical or building codes. For larger projects,
the issues can grow exponentially from those already mentioned to construction risks, supply chain management, operations & maintenance, contracts, multiple subcontractors, warranty and technology risks, to name just a few. The need for an independent review and assessment of project risk is amplified based on the complexity of these issues and the risks associated with each. An independent review, which is often referred to as an independent engineering review, provides an investor, potential investor, developer or other party the opportunity for an objective third-party to assess the attributes of a project. The specific focus of the review or analysis is on the aspects of a project
which could result in lower revenues for a multitude of reasons and therefore the return on investment risk. An experienced third-party will review the project for technical and commercial robustness. Many aspects of the project will be addressed to ensure the cash flow over the project life. However, the solar resource itself is often overlooked as a critical component of this review. A solar resource assessment will evaluate the quality of meteorological data used to characterize the project site. For larger projects, a properly managed, on-site measurement program for a minimum of a year will increase confidence, thereby decreasing the uncertainty of energy production from the project site. The quality of the longterm data set used in an assessment, be it modeled or measured, and its proximity to the actual project site are other factors which influence uncertainty around energy projections. Our Solar Test Systems have ease of use, long-term reliability and have the very best performance among all our competitors. As a result, we have been able to offer Class AAA Solar Simulators with superior specifications at very competitive prices.
SPDN: I understand your increase in sales is not only domestic but also in foreign markets. What accounts for your export success?
CT: Again, the reasons are our superior specifications, outstanding performance and competitive pricing. However, I also believe that the growth in both export and domestic sales is very much related to OAI’s strong reputation for customer support and service. Remember, OAI has products in the field that, in some cases, are over 20 years old. Our ongoing field support and our attention to customer service is a major contributor to our
Solar Power Daily News innovation to become more competitive with traditional energy sources. Silicon cell manufacturing companies are driving improved efficiencies through the adoption of new interface materials to the active conversion layers which seek to minimize current losses through various mechanisms. In particular, selective emitter technology is being implemented on a wider scale with a variety of methods which range from “implant” type techniques to traditional diffusion with subsequent lithographic steps. Entegris is working with leading original equipment manufacturers in optimizing these processes with our knowledge of contamination control. We are also working with cell manufacturers to bring production cell efficiencies closer to those obtained in research institutes through production-capable, high-purity, material delivery solutions. These include the use of cell process carriers designed to provide uniform process conditions to the cell surface, implementation of contamination control for incoming process fluids, and optimization of fluid handling systems (gas and liquid) to ensure uniform and pure chemical delivery. SPDN: Thin film based photovoltaics are becoming more prevalent in the industry, is Entegris also active in this market segment?
ST: Yes, Entegris has and continues to work with leaders in the thin film-based photovoltaic market to enable them to address the specific challenges they face. In this segment, many of the cell manufacturers also produce their own equipment and rely on expertise from critical suppliers in overcoming manufacturing challenges. We have solutions which enable manufacturers to uniformly deliver critical active materials both in the increase in solar test system sales.
SPDN: Do your solar simulator sales include I-V testers?
CT: About 40 percent of OAI’s sales include an integrated I-V tester. Many of our sales also include calibrated reference cells, test fixtures, and Solar Power Meters.
SPDN: How does your relationship with customers drive new product development?
CT: OAI continually works with its customers to develop new products. In the last six months after working closely with customers, OAI has introduced an advanced 350 nm to 1800 nm Class AAA Solar Simulator ideal for multi-junction solar cell testing, a high current I-V tester and a solar power meter. In all cases, the specifications were a joint collaboration with customers and combined needs and market requirements.
SPDN: Is your sales increase mainly in your new products or in the standard products? CT: Right now, the bulk of our sales increase is in the standard solar simula-
liquid phase and in the gas phase to the substrates without the introduction of contaminates. This, in turn, improves cell efficiencies and in many cases “tool throughput.” Many of the process steps involve high temperatures where high performance materials such as silicon carbide or graphite are used for crucibles, chamber components or substrate fixtures. Entegris designs custom solutions for companies to address their specific application needs. Entegris POCO® graphite has the most uniform electrical properties in the industry and is available with a variety of coatings to improve chemical compatibility. SPDN: What new products is Entegris bringing to the photovoltaic market for the coming year?
ST: Entegris continues to expand offerings in key product solution areas including substrate handling with cell shippers, carriers and process cassettes. Our full line of contamination-control solutions for both liquids and gas addresses the industry needs for contamination control in critical applications such as wet etch and clean, texturing and diffusion applications. This year we are releasing the new Savana™ filtration products for high-particle load applications, particularly applicable to thin film applications. These products remove particulate contamination while maintaining the chemical stoichiometry. We are also extending the flow range of our gas purification systems to meet needs above 5000 liters per minute, which is often required in ingot manufacturing. We are excited to engage with our customers in development of unique technologies for their particular applications throughout the photovoltaic supplier chain from polysilicon manufacturing to cell production.

equipment to developers and integrators across the US. We educate integrators in what we call the New Solar Paradigm―a combination of energy efficiency products, to bring the end-user’s electricity usage and peak demand down, with specific solar PV products at competitive prices. The combination gives our dealers a strong competitive edge and their customers a great return on investment. The core of our product line is Sovello modules. I have successfully sold projects to Hertz Corporation and Oppenheimer Funds, plus hundreds more commercial and residential systems, using the combination. SPDN: Will you be introducing any new products at SPI this year?
MS: Yes, we are introducing Sovello AG modules to the United States. Sovello modules fit perfectly between cheap FreeWave Technologies (Con’t. from p. 1)
to the host for utility scale photovoltaic (PV) systems. Additionally, they are used for E-stop functions and to facilitate positioning of concentrated solar power (CSP) type devices. FreeWave radios are also becoming popular with inverter monitoring applications. SPDN: What are some key criteria solar operators and decision makers must use when looking for a communication system?
BD: There are two primary criteria. The first is reliability. The radio manufacturer must have a proven track record for being reliable, even in difficult environments. The second is security. The systems need to defend themselves against attacks and have a toolkit onboard that will allow a user to be confident that these systems are resilient against communications attacks. SPDN: What makes FreeWave’s wireless

With more than 100,000 customers and locations in 50 countries, Anixter specializes on delivering complete, tailored solutions that meet the changing needs of its customers. With solutions for a diverse marketplace, Anixter provides customers with industry-leading solutions and expertise for its sourcing, logistics, inventory management, deployment and product enhancement needs.
SPDN: What distinguishes you from the competition?
MD: Anixter’s value lies in the depth and breadth of its inventory, its applicationspecific technical and product knowledge, and its value-added supply chain offerings all delivered consistently across
Chinese panels and overpriced “high efficiency” products.
SPDN: What is unique about Sovello modules?
MS: Sovello cells are string ribbon technology, developed at MIT. Swiss and German investors bought Evergreen Solar’s European manufacturing plant a few years ago, renaming it Sovello AG. Sovello bought the IP rights and now is the sole manufacturer of string ribbon technology. They kept the R&D going and the modules are superb.
SPDN: What makes string ribbon technology so unique?
MS: Sovello’s patented string ribbon wafers are made with 50 percent less silicon than traditional silicon wafers. Because of the way the cells are produced and modules configured, including anti-reflective glass and a nanotech surdata radios stand out from its competitors? What are its key benefits?
BD: Again, reliability and security are both critical for a successful communications system. FreeWave radios have been proven reliable in harsh environments even with no` line-of-sight capabilities. Our technology has been proven to work in both short-range and long-range situations. FreeWave also offers the only security suite in this class of radios on the market today. Finally, choosing a system almost always comes down to affordability. For an operator, the best choice isn’t always which system is least expensive to install, but which offers overall lifetime savings. FreeWave radios offer excellent long-term cost savings because they are proven, reliable and secure. SPDN: What are the latest advancements in wireless data radios for solar power?
BD: The biggest advancement we are seeing in the industry is a lot of features associated with security and managing a
facing, Sovello modules deliver 6-8 percent more production than standard modules. They collect ambient angles of light early or late in the daytime.
Best of all, Sovello modules have nearly zero cell degradation over time. The engineers say it better than I could: “One of the main culprits causing the degradation of ingot modules is the build-up of metal boron oxygen compounds as a result of diffusion. These compounds then form imperfections, which induce the recombination of free charge carriers. The oxygen here comes largely from crucibles used for the ingot installations. String Ribbon uses other materials as crucibles (graphite), which do not add any oxygen to the melt. This means that Sovello wafers contain hardly any oxygen, significantly reducing the build-up of the aforementioned compounds in the String Ribbon material.” Your ROI goes way up when you model
network. Some radio manufacturers, like FreeWave, have developed a layered approach to security and we’ve also added some tools that allow for more flexibility in managing the network as it’s being deployed and once it’s up and running. SPDN: What is the importance of security in a communications network?
BD: Security is critical at remotely located facilities. One of the biggest issues is Denial of Service (DoS). If a system is susceptible to a denial of service attack, the operator no longer has control of the system. This can be very costly as it relates to the organization’s Power Purchase Agreement. The other risk associated is actual damage to the equipment which also can be a major expense. SPDN: When it comes to communication needs, how has the solar power market changed since SPI 2010?
BD: We are seeing an increase in acceptance of wireless technology. It wasn’t

always embraced or understood to an industry that had trusted fiber-optic cable for a long time. The jury’s still out on which choice is best, and it really comes down to each individual organization’s communication and plant operating objectives. When cost savings and reliability is an important objective, FreeWave wireless data radios make a good choice. SPDN: Where do you see communication technologies for solar power heading in the future?
BD: I think it’s going to be all about funding. If there is significant funding available, design engineers may lean toward fiber-optic cable. If the available funding calls for high reliability and significantly lower cost, then wireless data radios, like FreeWave’s, will be a great choice.

GOOGLE PARTNERS WITH SOLARCITY TO CREATE $280 MILLION FUND FOR RESIDENTIAL SOLAR PROJECTS, NATIONʼS LARGEST TO DATE Solar Power Daily News
Collaboration will enable thousands of new solar installations and create a new clean energy investment model for American companies
SolarCity® and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) have created a $280 million fund to finance residential solar projects. The Google-backed fund is the first collaboration between the Internet giant and the nation’s leading solar power and energy efficiency service provider, and represents Google’s largest investment to date in the clean energy sector. The fund is SolarCity’s largest project financing fund and the largest residential solar fund created in the U.S. SolarCity has now created 15 project funds with seven different partners to finance $1.28 billion in solar projects. “Google is setting an example that other leading American companies can follow,” said Lyndon Rive, CEO of SolarCity. “The largest 200 corporations in the U.S. have more than $1 trillion in cash on their balance sheets. Investments in solar energy generate returns for corporate investors, offer cost savings for homeowners, create new local jobs for jobseekers, and protect the environment from polluting power sources. If more companies follow Google’s lead, we can dramatically reduce our nation’s dependence on polluting power.” The SolarCity/Google fund will extend solar lease (SolarLease®) and power purchase agreement (SolarPPATM) options to customers who desire to have solar panels installed on their homes, but do not wish to make the larger upfront investment to purchase the systems. SolarCity serves
Arizona, California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas, and has more than 15,000 solar projects completed or underway. More than 12,000 of those customers have chosen SolarCity’s financing options, while 3,000 have purchased their systems. “Google has made a series of investments in renewable energy because they make business sense and help deploy a range of solutions that can help move us toward a clean energy future,” said Rick Needham, Director of Green Business Operations at Google. “Now, through this partnership with SolarCity, we’re excited to be making our first investment in distributed residential solar, making it easier and more affordable for consumers across the country, including our own employees, to use renewable energy at their own homes.” Google has now invested more than $680 million in a wide range of clean energy technologies. This marks Google’s first investment in residential solar. “As American consumers better understand the consequences of their energy choices, demand for affordable clean power is increasing,” said Benjamin Cook, vice president of project finance at SolarCity. “This collaboration with Google will enable us to provide solar power to thousands of homeowners at or below the cost they currently pay for electricity.” More information about the residential financing options enabled by the partnership is available at www.solarcity.com /google-fund. GLOBAL SOLAR ENERGYʼS POWERFLEX BIPV
The building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) market is one of the fastest growing segments of the solar industry. According to industry research firm NanoMarkets, the sector will be worth $6.1 billion worldwide by 2016. In part, this is because BIPV has opened up tremendous new options to the building industry. It offers both aesthetic and functional value beyond power generation while also lowering costs from a designed-in approach to PV. Global Solar Energy, the leading manufacturer of high-efficiency Copper Indium Gallium diSelenide (CIGS) solar material and flexible BIPV roofing modules, recognized that the building industry has not been able to fully optimize the real estate on the rooftop with solar solutions that were currently available. In response, the company worked closely with commercial and industrial roofing professionals in designing their breakthrough flexible module: the PowerFLEX™ BIPV. PowerFLEX BIPV replaces heavy, rigid glass modules and metal racking structures that often can’t be applied to commercial rooftops because of
weight limitations. The lightweight design of the PowerFLEX BIPV means it can be applied directly to a roofing surface—requiring no mounting hardware, creating no roof penetrations and no additional wind load—helping to maintain the integrity and aesthetics of a building structure. “Traditional glass solar modules and amorphous silicon laminates, which are limited by low efficiency, have been the only options available until now,” said Jean-Noel Poirier, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Global Solar Energy. “Global Solar flexible modules are lightweight and achieve cost-effective, high-performance solar power. This makes them extremely attractive to integrators and roofing companies from both functional and aesthetic value viewpoints.” The 12.6-percent aperture efficiency of the PowerFLEX BIPV makes it the most efficient flexible solar module in the world. Its large format (5.75m x 0.5m) and high power density (300W) enables it to outperform other solar roofing solutions Continued on Page 101

The front end (cell creation) is where most of the cost battle is won or lost and the competitiveness of the final product is defined. Clearly, the technology that is chosen for the cell and the electrical conversion efficiency it can produce are primary factors to cost. manufacturing processes. Tapes can be converted into discrete die-cut parts such as “L” or “T” shapes. Often, foam tapes are converted into a “window frame” gasket shape for bonding a junction box to backsheet materials. Another tape delivery option is planetary rolls. These rolls can be slit into just about any width required by the customer design. Planetary tape rolls are compatible with many types of manual and automatic tape application equipment. They are often used with highvolume taping robots for frame- or rail-
bonding processes. For high-volume manufacturing, level-winding (sometimes referred to as traverse winding or spooling) may be the most desirable delivery format. Level-winding provides long lengths of tape on a single roll. These rolls can be up to 10 times as long as planetary roll of the same diameter. This additional material per roll drastically reduces the amount of equipment down time associated with the roll changeover process. Producing consistent and high-quality level wound rolls requires a advanced manufacturing expertise combined with specific heavy-duty converting equipment designed to output high precision level-wound product. Too many automation schemes “hard pipe” the fab together and prevent future changes without a significant cost. Schiller’s innovation is to create a central handling system called the Backbone™ that is connected to each process tool in the front end. The Backbone allows for several key improvements to fab design. First, it is a central location for buffering of each step. It is impossible to know in advance how much buffer space is needed, so an estimate is made―if too many slots are installed the scheme is very expensive, but if too few, the line can stop completely with a down system―a catastrophic problem. Backbone allows for a sharing of

buffer space so there is always plenty in the area of need, and these spaces are shared automatically without operator involvement―a process called dynamic buffering. But the benefits of the Backbone go far beyond. For example, it is easy to add a process tool or step, even if it does not fit into the area of production where it belongs. The Backbone will bring the substrates out to the tool and return them to their proper place in the flow. This allows an ability to expand and take advantage of future innovations―a certainty in this market. Additionally, the Backbone is extremely space efficient. It generally maintains substrates in their natural plane of orientation so

Dairy farms, vineyards, or parking lots are all ideally suited to house the noninvasive power generation a sonnen_systems tracker offers while benefiting from the variety of net-metering options that are out there. The easy and fast installation on a large scale and an output advantage of 45 percent over fixed-mount systems makes dual-axis tracking a natural choice for utilities. We also see a huge potential in charging stations for the electric vehicle revolution currently underway. For more information, visit www.sonnensystems.com or stop by booth 5150.

ground-mount solar project. The decision to go solar was a natural evolution for Keith Masser, Chairman and CEO of Sterman Masser Inc. The company earned an EPA award in 1998 for implementing Integrated Pest Management practices on the 4,600 acres of farmland where it limits chemical use, employs erosion control and crop rotation. Masser also compacts and recycles discarded packaging material. Workers store, wash, size and package 300 million pounds of potatoes each year at the Sacramento plant and at a sister facility in White Pigeon, Mich. “In 2009, Pennsylvania Power & Light was deregulated, and we knew we Copper State Bolt & Nut Co. turer of fasteners, industrial and construction products, cutting tools and abrasives, power tools, fluid sealing products, and related items. CSBN provides products and service in support of mining, industrial, construction, utilities and telecommunications, automotive, maintenance and repair, OEM, and government accounts.
CSBN’s operations include nearly 400 employees throughout 21 locations in Arizona, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada, with production facilities in Phoenix, Ariz. We have a Mexican subsidiary supporting the border region and mining properties throughout Mexico.
SPDN: Did your marketing strategy in the past year provide you the overall position you had projected?
SS: Not only did CSBN obtain projected position, we exceeded it. We learned early on that in order to supply products effectively in the solar market place, we had to shape ourselves into a distributor with a strong focus on project logistics to meet the unique requirements of solar Adhesives Research (Con’t. from p. 1)
its 50th year as a leading developer of custom pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes (PSAs), specialty coatings, films and laminates, to meet the diverse needs of customers in a wide variety of industries.
With manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Ireland and Colombia, as well as sales offices in Europe and Asia, AR’s PSA technologies are used around the world in solar photovoltaic panels, wireless telecommunication, electronics, displays, medical diagnostic devices, pharmaceutical devices or products, transdermal drug delivery devices, window fabrication, packaging and the pulp and paper industry. SPDN: What distinguishes your product(s) from the competition?
DH: Adhesives Research’s core competency revolves around working closely with our customers to meet their unmet needs in creating products with greater capabilities and functionality. As a pioneer

were looking at paying more for electricity,” Masser says. “Solar could hedge against the expected higher rates. We decided the solar project was feasible when economic development funding became available last year.” Masser hopes to sell back energy credits in Penn. and possibly in Ohio. He expects his first solar project, which broke ground in October and was completed in late May, to pay for itself within five to 10 years. Inovateus Solar supplied the engineering, procurement and construction for the project on land only marginally suitable for farming. A key partner was Secco, Inc., a local general contractor, chosen for its expertise and knowledge of permitting and local resources. “We’ve worked with Secco before,” says Nathan
Vogel, project manager for Inovateus Solar, “and knew of their abilities.” Inovateus chose Schletter racking, two Xantrex GT500 inverters, and Schott Solar 230 watt polycrystalline modules for the solar panels. Shoals Technology also supplied some of the electrical components. Xantrex encased the inverters, including all electrical components, in concrete. “This ‘megawatt in a box’ was a first-time use of concrete,” Vogel says. “Xantrex has always used metal in the past.” “Inovateus Solar was the contractor of choice,” says Keith Masser. “We selected them because they were cooperative, and we were able to negotiate a mutual contract with ease. We liked their connections with Schneider Electric and Secco. Their relationships and knowl-
edge of this type of project have made it go smoothly.” When Keith’s great, great, great, great grandfather Mathias Masser came to America from Germany in 1754, he brought along his special knowledge of growing potatoes. Little did he know that more than 250 years later German ingenuity from companies like Schott Solar and Schletter would help his descendants carry on the tradition. projects. Because of the scale and pace of the projects we have served, we learned it wasn’t enough just to have parts available in stock. The parts needed to be uniquely packaged, labeled and often assembled for use on the job site.
the biggest challenge we will face over the next year. Our purchasing and logistics team is currently trying to address the “How High is Up” issue so they can support our sales needs as the economy rebounds. Since there are no firm answers to this unknown, we are planning on shooting to the high side of our inventory equation.
from the current market. Since we are a manufacturer of fasteners, packaging and assembly is an area which we take great pride. Whether we make the product or are importing the product from overseas sources, we insist the products and packaging meet a very high standard. Our customers appreciate that our pallets of material are organized and labeled so they are easy to read and interface with most radio frequency scanners. We understand that no one needs to waste time handling penny parts.
SPDN: Describe your current marketing strategy.
SS: Our current marketing strategy for the solar industry is to team with other companies with a strong focus on quality. I believe that if quality is not one of a company’s primary focuses, that company will not last long in the solar business. As a distributor it is often hard to “pick your customer,” but we intentionally solicit those companies that we know are focused on delivering a quality product to their customers. SPDN: What do you anticipate to be your greatest challenge in the year ahead?
SS: Since the world economy ground to a halt over the past couple of years, we have reduced our production on many items and have seen other manufactures reduce their production as well both domestically and overseas. Keeping up with production as demands spike will be in the photovoltaic market, Adhesives Research works directly with PV manufacturers to develop electrically conductive and specialized PSA bonding technologies to advance the functionality and performance of crystalline and thin film PV modules. We have a very robust product development process with crossfunctioning teams. With scientists, process engineers, operation engineers and quality managers, we work as a unified team to develop unique solutions. SPDN: Did your marketing strategy in the past year provide you the overall position you had projected?
DH: Adhesives Research’s success is directly tied to the strength of our relationships and our reputation within the industries we serve. During the past year, we added webinars and lunch and learn seminars, allowing us to meet directly with our customers. We are pleased to say the response has been phenomenal. We will continue to build on these efforts as we introduce new ways to
SPDN: What distinguishes your product(s) from the competition?
SS: Aside from being a fastener distributor, we are also a fastener manufacturer with full A2LA-accredited laboratory facilities. This allows us to provide both products and services that most of our competition cannot provide. We can also test products that we import or obtain through another domestic source to ensure that the product meets its specification. If you can’t test the product, the best you can do is hope it meet its specification.
SPDN: Compare the position of your products and their technology against the current market. SS: Our warehouse and distribution operation is really what separates us collaborate with our customers.
SPDN: What was the most significant event or series of events affecting your company in the past year?
DH: Last year saw one of the most tumultuous times in recent history in specialty chemicals. Economic conditions forced many manufacturers to close down plants, consolidate product lines or raise prices. Market forces did not permit us to adjust prices, and this resulted in a difficult situation for Adhesives Research and others in the industry. SPDN: What is the nature of your distribution?
DH: We deal directly with the original equipment managers (OEMs) and do not work through distribution. Distribution may be brought into the picture if the customer requests it; however, direct contact is always maintained. Our flexible manufacturing capabilities in multiple locations, combined with the attention from
SPDN: Who are your target end-users?
SS: Types of end users that we are targeting are EPC companies (utilityscale CSP and PV), turn-key PV solar mounting and tracking systems (ground mount and roof top), general contractors, electrical contractors, steel and aluminum fabricators and erectors, aluminum extrusion, residential solar installers, concrete contractors, and roofing contractors.

our global sales managers, assures our customers of uninterrupted delivery in a timely and economical manner. SPDN: To what do you attribute your company’s success?
DH: Adhesives Research’s success over the past 50 years is tied directly to our customers and our ability to work closely with them to develop a precisely tailored adhesive technology for their project. It’s through our consistent business model and our ability to build upon the company’s extensive “technology toolbox,” that includes hundreds of unique polymer and adhesive formulations, that we are able to continue to meet the needs of manufacturers who turn to us. When AR started in 1961, our goal was to be the best in our industry, not necessarily the biggest. We are proud to say, that goal is still in place today.
