RedCap: A Key Step in 5G for New Devices and Services

The inclusion of 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) in the 3GPP Release 17 specification is good news for end users, IoT device manufacturers and mobile carriers. RedCap enables a new realm of 5G IoT devices and related application and s e r v i c e o p p o r t u n i t i e s t h a t c a n b e expected in the next few years

5G use cases are typically categorized under LPWA/massive Machinet y p e - C o m m u n i c a t i o n s ( m M T C ) , enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) a n d U l t r a - r e l i a b l e , L o w - l a t e n c y Communications (URLLC). Each of these has features to enable the delivery of s e r v i c e s , s u c h a s e x t r e m e c o v e r a g e (LPWA/mMTC), high data rates (eMBB) o r l o w l a t e n c y w i t h h i g h r e l i a b i l i t y (URLLC) The 3GPP specifications define the requirements to meet these needs But many IoT applications within these categories can run with reduced 5G r e q u i r e m e n t s R e d C a p d e f i n e s t h o s e requirements.
