editor I may not have every kitchen gadget known to the world and many of my pots and pans don’t match because they were bought (or gifted) at different times, but I do have plenty of antique and vintage British transferware – four complete sets and various service pieces in various patterns from different pottery houses (but mostly Johnson Brothers and their grandfather, Alfred Meakin). My good friend Robert and I love treasure hunting in local antique stores.

He’s prone to take home a full set of dishes when they catch his eye, but he’s better than I am at getting rid of a set before he brings one home. However, I have trained him to spot a Johnson Brothers dish at 20 paces.

All of this does have a point. While Kitchenware News & Housewares Review focuses on the newest kitchen and home products on the market, many of us do appreciate kitchenware and tableware that has stood the test of time and survived not only countless meals, but all that hand-washing!

One thing I don’t have is a mustard jar. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a mustard jar in an antique store. I might have, but since I wasn’t looking for one, it didn’t make an impression on me. However, when I was working on a feature for the July issue of our sister publication, Gourmet News, I was leafing through the pages of museum curator and founder Barry Levenson’s book, “The Art of Mustard,” when I reached a chapter on mustard jars.

“Mustard pots can be totally utilitarian, with nothing fancy or ornate about them,” he wrote. “The earthenware crocks that mustard makers used for their mustards are like the jugs and urns that the ancients used for drinks and food stuffs. We look at them now with a different sense of appreciation. They are more than history, they are indeed art.”

I glanced over the commercial mustard pots, from rustic to stylish.

The museum even has a mustard pot with King George VI and his wife, Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), when they visited President Franklin Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt, who served them hot dogs with mustard.

And then, on page 61, I laid eyes on a pretty mustard pot with a blue floral design atop a white background (creamware, perhaps?) with gold trim. It’s gotta be transferware, I thought, wishing I could pick it up and turn it over to see the maker’s mark. It might even be flow blue, which is a pattern that’s a bit smeared in the firing process.

I’m thinking it dates from the 1940s or so.

And now I have a new quest, to find a Johnson Brothers or Alfred Meakin mustard jar and visit the National Museum of Mustard to see if that one is transferware and whether there are any more on display.

Back to our issue, we’re talking winter holidays and what trends have been spotted so far. As you may guess, I’m jazzed that the nostalgia trend has made the old-fashioned glass figurines popular again. They remind me of the German ornaments my parents had for our Christmas tree. We moved too much and they were too fragile to survive, but hey, I can get a whole new set that looks the same! If I ever win the lottery, I’m going to Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg and buying one of everything (and maybe scoot over to the U.K. for some transferware).

H-E-B’s newest store in New Braunfels, Texas, contains the first Home by H-E-B department and a two-story True Texas BBQ restaurant. At 122,000 square feet, the store has an expansive product assortment and several convenient services.

With two brands in the homeware department, Haven + Key and Texas Proud, the collection offers hundreds of items that include timeless home textiles, inspiring décor, and versatile furniture and accent pieces. Under the Haven + Key line, customers can find on-trend seasonal items from candles, mirrors and toss pillows, to

kitchen textiles, rugs, throw blankets and accent furniture.

The Texas Proud brand will celebrate Texas style and feature many similar items made by Texas-based artisans and businesses such as wood and antler art from Broken Antler in Converse, leather goods from Lucio Tailoring Co. in San Antonio, cowhide benches from Texas Bench Worx in Luling, and hand-poured candles from Rustic Swank in New Braunfels.

Monogram luxury appliances named Chef Edward Lee, a James Beard Awardwinning author and the owner and head chef of several nationally recognized restaurants, as the brand’s first culinary director to build on its culinary platform.

Lee will formulate the official

Gardiner Designs (Advent calendars and paper gifts from the United Kingdom and Germany), Unique Glass Ornaments (mouth-blown glass ornaments from Egypt) and Winter Street Collection (holiday décor).

Existing exhibitors who expanded are Option 2 (Christmas ornaments and decorations), Universal LED Lighting Inc. (holiday lights) and Vickerman Company (seasonal decorations).

Atlanta Market Magazine identified several common threads at the January show: Natural Accents, Into the Woods, Comforting Nostalgia, Candy Shop Pastels and Festive Illumination.

Those trends certainly hold true at the expanded Vickerman showroom, with groupings of Natural Looking Foliage, Cozy Pastels and Plum Jewel Tones decorations.

Garlands, wreaths and teardrops composed of fern, cedar and new growth are in demand, said Gaby Lynch, Vickerman’s showroom manager.

“Mixed foliage gives a full, fresh look with various

tones of greens,” she said.

“Subtle pastel pinks, blues, greens and purples coordinate well with bright silver tinsels and snowy whites on a White Flocked tree,” Lynch said.

“Rich plum jewel tones matched with rose gold, champagne and juniper green make for an elegant beautiful design,” she said. “Mix in full hydrangeas and large poinsettias for a bountiful look.”

And for those who can’t wait until winter to decorate, Vickerman has something for fall decor, too.

“Halloween trees have been creeping into the scene for a few years now,” Lynch said.

“But this year is the year for bold, vibrant, ghoulish reason for the season. Vickerman’s Flocked Black Tree, Lime Green and Purple full or slim trees set the perfect canvas for all your Halloween décor.”

But, of course, there are always the perennial holiday favorites, which are important now as consumers yearn for nostalgia.

This year, Nassau Candy decided to put a sweet spin on edible holiday gifting with its Clever Candy Gingerbread House Candy Kit and Elf Activity Kit. “The Gingerbread House Candy Kit doesn’t come with a house,” explained Dana Rodio, director of brand strategy.

The Nassau Candy team discussed what’s currently on the market and what sells.

“Gingerbread is not something we do,” she said.

“But those kits tend to come with a limited amount of candy. And, as kids will do, when you’re making the gingerbread house, you’re also snacking on the candy and have to buy more candy.”

Nassau Candy’s solution was to package gingerbread house-suitable candies, such as nonpareils for roof shingles, that weigh

about a pound – with instructions and suggestions on how to use the candies on the house.

The Elf Activity Kit is pretty much selfexplanatory, Rodio said.

“If you’re a working mom with a busy life, it’s the day after Thanksgiving and you’re thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve got 30 days to figure out what to do with my little elves. Well, we’ve got five nights covered for you.”

Activities include Santa head gummies and starlight mints the elves plant that grow into candy canes overnight. And, in what’s sure to be a hit with the kids, bubble gum “farts” and reindeer “poop.”

The new holiday kits debuted at the recent Sweets & Snacks Expo, but Nassau Candy’s holiday offerings range from Orthodox Chews, assorted salt water taffy, and milk chocolate gold foiled coins for Hanukkah; Candy Pop Peppermint Candy Popcorn, Chocorocks Black Coal Chocolate Chunks and (this is not a typo) Christmas gummy sharks.

IHA Aims to Rebuild The Inspired Home Show to Pre-Pandemic Levels in Next Few Years Rebuilding The Inspired Home Show to pre-pandemic levels will be the primary focus of the International Housewares Association in the next few years.

“We were one of the brands that sat out of The Inspired Home Show 2022,” said Rob Michelson, president and CCO, Bradshaw Home and an IHA board member. “Although COVID concerns made our participation impossible this past year, we are very excited and enthusiastic to get back to the Show in 2023 and rebuild those face-to-face engagements that are critical to our success.”

The 2022 Show ended with an approximate 50 percent turnout from exhibitors and buyers when compared to

previous shows. Although the total number of U.S. buyers was down from previous years, the quality of key retailers in attendance remained high with verified representatives attending.

Despite COVID-related travel restrictions, verified international buyer attendance was strong with key buyers attending from around the world.

The Inspired Home Show 2023 will take place at McCormick Place in Chicago March 4-7. The board codified the decision to keep the Show in Chicago in 2024, with planned dates of March 16-19.

Recently, members of IHA’s board of directors and several past chairs gathered with senior IHA staff to review results of

The Inspired Home Show 2022 and to discuss strategic direction for IHA, the show and other IHA member services for 2023 and beyond.

IHA staff reported that: • 97.3 percent of verified retailers had purchase authority • 87.3 percent of verified retailers were buyers and/or executives • 25 percent of verified retailers represented more than $100 million in annual sales • More than 33 percent of verified retailers represented more than 50 stores • More than 25 percent of verified retailers represented more than 100 stores The IHA board reviewed the new exhibitor prospectus, “Back to Business,”

which contains additional statistics surrounding The Inspired Home Show.

IHA staff also reviewed the newly rebranded and reimagined on-site displays, including Pantone ColorWatch, gia Global Innovation Awards, Smart Home and Inventor’s Corner. Events reviewed included Trending Today, the New Exhibitor Preview and the Cooking Theater. The board unanimously agreed to move forward with these elements.

After examining data presented to the board, members discussed “what-if ” scenarios, ultimately identifying one scenario that is most likely – a strong show that is larger than 2022 but smaller than 2019, with a return to pre-COVID levels perhaps taking more than one year. KN
