The Allies Banquet

On the morning (noon) of September 18th, I woke up crisp and early at 12 p.m.—2 hours later than I was supposed to. I scrambled out of bed, brushed my teeth, and got dressed as I got a flurry of texts from my vice president, Bryant Le, saying he was outside my house and to hurry. In 30 minutes, we were supposed to be at the Walnut Ridge Baptist Church to volunteer for the Allies in Youth Development Banquet.

When we arrived, Margie, one of the managers and coordinator for the event, instructed us to sign in and set up our name tags. That way, the guests could identify us, thank us for our work, etc. Afterward, we moved to the main stage area to start setting up the tables. I was in awe of how massive the grand hall was! It was my first time there, and I wasn’t expecting such extravagance.

There were over 20 tables that we had to arrange by the number of guests and who they were. For instance, all tables received a lego centerpiece to fit the theme of this year’s banquet: color their world. Then, we labeled the tables by number according to a large chart displayed on the screens next to the stage. Other than the usual food setups such as plates, utensils, and salt and pepper, we also left shirts according to the guests’ size on their respective chairs.

Once we were finished with that, we had a small waiting period until the next shift. During this time, Bryant and I socialized with the other volunteers, many coming from high schools all across the region. We met three girls from Lake Ridge High School and talked about different Key Club activities we had participated in so far in the school year.

The next shift started a little earlier than 4 p.m. We got straight to work preparing the food items for the tables. Once we got into the rhythm of things, people fell into certain roles. I switched between the various jobs so I could help out in whatever way possible.

I’m disappointed I wasn’t able to finish the second shift, but the banquet was amazing! The food looked delicious and I’m glad to know our efforts were dedicated to generous donors who were saving children all over the world.
