22ND ANNUAL KELLY SHIRES BREAST CANCER SNOW RUN special presentation for Co-Founder, Suzy Stenoff, where their viewed a special video of virtual hugs that over 100 people participated in! The group held a virtual closing Gala on Saturday, February 27th hosted by Mistress of Ceremonies Beverly Thomson, National Journalist, Recent inductee to the Order of Canada and a breast cancer warrior. The event was full of special performances by Canadian Country artist, Jason McCoy and by Donna Huber, awards and the announcement of the annual raffle winners. Kelly Shires’ legacy continued strong this year through the amazing enthusiasm that over participants brought to the first ever virtual but 22nd annual Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Snow Run. Over 110 participants took part in this years virtual event that took place over the whole month of February 2021 raising over $410,000 for breast cancer patients across Canada, bringing the 22 year fundraising total to over $7,400,000.00! This remarkable feat proves how creative and passionate snowmobilers are about making a difference in the lives of those battling breast cancer. The charity has a success story that even original Co-founders, Kelly Shires and Suzy Stenoff could not have envisioned when the inaugural ride took place in 2000 22 years ago. Kelly lost her personal battle with the disease in October 2004, but her dream was kept alive by all those participating in this years virtual event. In true. Kelly style no one let the pandemic stop them from being a part of history On a normal year the event would take place at Hidden Valley Resort in Huntsville but due to the pandemic that was not a possibility. The event kicked off on Saturday, February 6th as it normally would have but through a virtual opening ON SNOW MAGAZINE • VOL 35 • ISSUE 6
ceremony which of course included dancing to the event theme song by Shania Twain – Man I feel like a woman. The virtual kick off also included a month long virtual on-line silent auction.
