The film Hotel Império by Portuguese director Ivo M. Ferreira will have a world premiere at the Pingyao Film Festival, which starts on October 11 in Mainland China, the movie's production company O Som e a Fúria revealed
Hotel Império was filmed in Macau, where Ivo M. Ferreira has lived for many years, and tells the story of a Portuguese born in the city – interpreted by Margarida Vila-Nova – who, together with other people, inhabits an old hotel on its way to being destroyed to make room for a modern building. In 2016, when he presented the film project at the Macao International Film Festival, Ivo Ferreira explained that the feature film has a recurring and very present theme in the life of the city: the accelerated change of space, driven development. “The hotel evidently has a symbolic burden on Macau, it will be destroyed to build a casino hotel. It has to do with the (…) erosion of the city [which] can create an identity, erosion can unite us, unite neighbors who did not speak. I think the film gravitates pretty much 1/2
around this environment, that destruction can unite to protect the city,” the director explained at the time. In addition to Margarida Vila-Nova, the film features Rhydian Vaughan, a Taiwanese actor of British descent, and several actors from Macau. Hotel Império, which Ivo M. Ferreira shot after his movie Letters of War, will premiere at the second edition of the Pingyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Festival, created in 2017 by Chinese director Jia Zhangke and programmer Marco Muller. The festival was named after Ang Lee’s 2000 film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
