The film “Hotel Império”, by the Portuguese director Ivo M. Ferreira, will be world premiere at the Pingyao Film Festival, which starts on March 11 in China, revealed today the production company O Som e Fúria. “Hotel Império” was filmed in Macao, where Ivo M. Ferreira lives for many years, and tells the story of a Portuguese born in the city – interpreted by Margarida Vila-Nova – who, together with other people, inhabits an old hotel in ways of being destroyed to make room for a modern building. In 2016, when he presented the film project at the Macao International Film Festival, Ivo M. Ferreira explained that the feature film has a recurring and very present theme in the life of the city: the accelerated change of space, driven development. “The hotel evidently has a symbolic burden on Macau, it will be destroyed to build a casino hotel. It has to do with (…) erosion of the city [which] can create an identity, erosion can unite us , unite neighbors that were not spoken.I think the film gravitates very much around this environment, that the destruction can unite to protect the city, explained at the time director. In addition to Margarida Vila-Nova, the film features Rhydian Vaughan, a Taiwanese actor of British descent, and several actors from Macao. ‘Hotel Império’, which Ivo M. Ferreira shot after ‘Letters of War’, will premiere at the second edition of the Pingyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Festival, set up in 2017 by Chinese director Jia Zhangke and programmer Marco Muller. The festival was named after Ang Lee’s 2000 film “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”.
