SYNOPSIS After 14 years away from her homeland, Salomé is forced to return to Cape Verde to see her dying brother. During her stopover at Lisbon airport, Águeda a cleaning lady, recognizes Salomé as “Mila”, her childhood friend. Águeda invites Salomé to leave the airport and spend the stopover at her home, with the women of her family. The neighbourhood transports her on a spiritual journey, whose destination unfurls a painful bond with her homeland. SINOPSE Depois de 14 anos longe da sua terra natal, Salomé viaja para a Ilha de Santiago, Cabo-Verde, para ver o seu irmão cuja vida está presa por um fio. Faz escala no aeroporto de Lisboa, onde Águeda, empregada de limpeza, a reconhece como “Mila”, sua velha amiga de infância. Águeda convida-a a passar as horas de escala em sua casa, com as mulheres da sua família. Enquanto Salomé luta para desmagnetizar a dolorosa ligação com a sua terra, o espírito do bairro devolve-a à essência à qual ela pertence.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Stopovers at the Lisbon airport are a habit for the Cape Verdean emigrant. The waiting time between one flight and another can last several hours, and many travellers end up visiting relatives who live in the nearby suburbs. The story of NHA MILA is inspired by the stopover hours spent in Lisbon, a purgatory between the familiar and the innate, on a journey to a home that will always remain at a distance. The hours unfold into an inevitable search for an axis around which Cape Verdean emigrants can recompose the pieces of a complex identity. NHA MILA traces a serpentine route from that centre, taking us through an itinerary unknown by the usual guidebooks and brochures of Lisbon.
NOTA DE INTENÇÕES As escalas aéreas em Lisboa são um hábito do emigrante cabo-verdiano. O tempo de espera entre um voo e outro pode estender-se por longas horas, fazendo com que muitos acabem por ir visitar familiares e conhecidos que residem nos bairros periféricos nas proximidades do aeroporto. A história de NHA MILA inspira-se nas horas de escala condensadas em Lisboa a caminho de Cabo Verde, durante as quais é inevitavel para muitos emigrantes procurar um eixo em torno do qual recompor pedaços de uma identidade muito complexa. O filme traça um percurso distante desse centro e leva-nos por um itinerario ausente da Lisboa representada habitualmente nos guias e brochuras.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Denise Fernandes was born in Lisbon in 1990 from Cape Verdean parents and she was raised in southern Switzerland. In 2011 she graduated in film directing and production at the International Conservatory of Audiovisual Sciences in Lugano (CISA).In the same year, her diploma short film Una Notte debuted at the 64th edition of the Locarno Film Festival. From 2011 to 2013, she studies filmmaking at Cuba’s International School of Film and TV (EICTV), where she directs Pan Sin Mermelada, which deserves the nomination of Upcoming Talent at the Solothurn Festival and Idyllium, awarded at the Winterthur International Short Film Festival. She is currently preparing her first feature film, Hanami, set in Cape Verde. Hanami was selected from 70 projects for the Solothurn Talent Lab 2016 and awarded the Best First Project by the Swiss Society of Authors (SSA).
SOBRE A REALIZADORA Denise Fernandes nasceu em Lisboa em 1990 de pais de origem cabo-verdiana e foi criada no sul da Suíça. Em 2011 graduou-se em realização e produção cinematográfica no Conservatório Internacional de Ciências audiovisuais em Lugano(CISA). No mesmo ano, a sua curta de diploma Una Notte estreia na 64a edição do Festival de Locarno. De 2011 a 2013 estuda realização na Escola Internacional de Cinema e TV (EICTV) de Cuba, onde dirige as curtas Pan Sin Mermelada, que merece a nomeação de Upcoming Talent no Solothurn Festival e Idyllium, premiada no Festival Internacional de Winterthur. Está atualmente a preparar a sua primeira longa-metragem, Hanami, ambientada em Cabo Verde. Hanami foi selecionado entre 70 projetos para o Solothurn Talent Lab 2016 e premiado como melhor projeto de primeira obra pela Sociedade Suíça dos Autores (SSA).

ABOUT THE FILM In Cape Verdean Creole, “nha” is a strong affective term that literally translates as “mine” or “dear”. NHA MILA, therefore, means Dear Mila. The film was shot in Lisbon’s Portela neighborhood with four incredible women, three of them making their screen appearance debut.

Cleo Tavares, who plays Sheila, is known for her role in Diamantino by Gabriel Abrantes (winner of the Grand Prize at Cannes Critic’s Week, in 2018). The short was filmed by Marta Simões, known for her work in Flores (Toronto IFF 2017) and Past Perfect by Jorge Jácome (Berlinale 2019). NHA MILA is Denise Fernandes’ fourth short film.

SOBRE O FILME Em crioulo cabo-verdiano “nha” é um termo afetivo forte que pode significar “meu” ou “querido”. NHA MILA significa Querida Mila. O filme foi filmado em Lisboa, no bairro da Portela, com quatro mulheres incríveis, três das quais na sua estreia em tela. Cleo Tavares, que interpreta Sheila, é conhecida pelo seu papel de co-protagonista no filme Diamantino de Gabriel Abrantes (vencedor do Grande Prémio da Semana da Crítica de Cannes em 2018). O filme é fotografado por Marta Simões, conhecida pelo seu trabalho em Flores (Toronto IFF 2017) e Past Perfect (Berlinale 2019) de Jorge Jácome.
