“현재가 그 자체로 빛날 터였다”

2021년 부산영화제에서 〈더 트스거오 다이어리〉를 관람한 후 일주일이 지

〈필로〉는 지난 호에 이미 고메스의 작품세계와 〈더 트스거오 다이어리〉에

난 어느 날 오후 같다. 이후경과 나는 산중턱에 앉아 커다란 나무 사이로 쏟아지

달할 수 있는 영화를 창조하는 일이 지성을 앞세운 영화를 만드는 일보다 실은 훨씬 어렵고 위대하다는 이야기를 나눴다. 그날의 투명한 빛줄기와 영화에 대한 기억에 한껏 취한 얼마간 편협한 대화였지만, 지금도 가끔 그 말을 상기해본다.

물론 세상에 존재하는 무엇도 아무것도 하지 않는 채 존재할 수는 없을 것

한 조화만이 아니라, 그걸 포착하고 긍정하고 일으키고 지키려는 사람들의 육체

와 마음의 결로 충만하다. 그런 조화와 결은 쉽게 성취될 수 있는 것도, 누구에게 나 허락되는 것도 아니다.

알려진 대로 〈더 트스거오 다이어리〉는 공동 감독 모린 파젠데이로와 미겔

고메스가 코로나 팬데믹으로 준비하던 영화제작을 중단한 후 다소 무모하게 감 행한 시도의 결과물이다. 포르투갈 지방의 농가에서 최소의 인원만 데리고 ‘격

리생활 하며 영화 찍는 사람들’의 일과를 담아보기로 한 것이다. 과연 이런 식으

로도 영화가 성립할 수 있을까. 이 영화는 그 의심과 기꺼이 유희하는 자세로 코 로나 봉쇄령이라는 명백한 한계 안에서도 꿈틀대는 활동들 세부를 열어내며 세

계의 리듬으로 전환한다. 영화 속 인물들이 나비장 짓기에 몰두하듯 두 감독, 배 우들, 스태프들 또한 ‘영화 찍기’를 공동의 노동이자 놀이로 삼아 그 시간을 버텨

냈을 것이다. 활기가 사라진 현실 조건 한가운데로 들어가 오히려 그 불가능성 을 디딤돌로 구축한 환영의 운동. 이 영화는 그 현실을 회피하지도, 환영의 운동

을 체념하지도 않는다. 코로나바이러스가 제한한 운신의 지평에서도 영화는 최 선을 다해 최상의 춤을 출 수 있다. 현실의 시간이 지속된다면, 영화는 어떤 경 우에도 그 속에서 가장 빛나는 ‘현재성’을 발견해낼 수 있으리라. 그 사실을 새삼 간절하게 일깨우는 〈더 트스거오 다이어리〉가 아름답고 강하다.
