With roots dating back to 1959, ARISE Church has been a staple in the community. In the last decade, ARISE has seen prolific growth, culminating in a new facility in 2017. Its Sunday mornings draw upwards of 1,000 people, with many of its attendees driving from Riverview and the SouthShore area. We are extremely adamant about making sure we are not just babysitting kids, but that we are discipling kids." On Saturday, November 9, join Casting Crowns, Hillsong Worship and Elevation Worship for a night of worship when their 2019 USA tour makes a stop at Tampa's AMALIE Arena. The concert kicks off at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. The multiplatinum-selling artists are all celebrated for powerful lyrics resonating with Christ's abundant love and adoration of His name. All three music groups were formed from worship ministries within the local church. Despite their tremendous success in the 'music world,' the three bands continue to serve their local home churches. Casting Crowns began as a student worship band and debuted its first album in 2003. The GRAMMY® award-winning band has since released 12 albums and received 18 GMA Dove Awards, all while continuing its youth ministry at Eagle's Landing First Baptist Church in Atlanta. Hillsong Worship exists to build up the local church around the world with genuine, passionate worship music and originates from Australia's Hillsong Church. The group recently won a GRAMMY® for 'Best Contemporary Christian

Song/Performance' with its song, What a Beautiful Name. David Ware, a worship leader and vocalist from Hillsong Worship, said, "When it comes to worship nights, there's not just a sense of gathering or a sense of [the] presence of God, but there's also a sense of home." He continued, "Have you ever been in a foreign country, and somewhere, somehow, you begin to hear your national anthem being sung? You know you aren't in the place of permanence, but your heart just leans into it, and your spirit feels like, 'ahhhh, home.' That's what worship is for us—gathering together, singing

heaven's 'national anthems' and doing the very thing we were created to do but together in unity." Elevation Worship is the ministry of Elevation Church, a multisite church in Charlotte, NC. The group received a GRAMMY® nomination for 'Best Contemporary Christian Album' for their album, Hallelujah Here Below, released in September 2018. Elevation Worship is passionate about creating songs for the local church that help people connect with Jesus. "We are excited to hit the road with our friends, Hillsong Worship and Casting Crowns," said Chris Brown, the lead singer of Elevation Worship. "We're expectant that God is going to move and do something special each night this fall." More information on the bands can be found on their respective websites. Tickets are available at the ReliaQuest Ticket Office at AMALIE Arena, Ticketmaster outlets and ticketmaster.com. Ticket prices are from $20 to $149.50. Prices do not include facility fee or service charges. Visit amaliearena.com or call 301-2500 for more information. AMALIE Arena is located at 401 Channelside Dr. in Tampa.

Local Christian News: 5K, Homeschool Day At Cracker Country Homeschool Day At Cracker Country: Pioneers & Cowhunters

Visit for a special day designed for homeschoolers and their families. On Friday, September 6 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., educational interpreters in historical dress will guide young learners through activities that would have been familiar to a child growing up in a Florida farming and ranching community over 100 years ago. Try your hand at churning butter, helping with the household chores, making your own toy and taking a lesson in a one-room school house. Learn some ‘cowhunter’ skills, like how to swing a lasso and what to pack for a long cattle drive. The cost is $8 per person 4 years old and up, and children 3 years old and younger will be admitted for free. Advance ticket purchase is recommended. This is a very popular event, and there are limited tickets available. Cracker Country is located at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Parking is free. Visit www.crackercountry.org/index.php/comevisit/when-to-visit/homeschool-events/pioneers-cowhunters.

Interns Add To Osprey Observer News Team For The Summer By Jordyn Kalman

Jordyn Kalman University of Florida

Sean Crumpacker Newsome High School

Every summer, the Osprey Observer welcomes interns from high schools and colleges into its office to learn the ins and outs of the newspaper industry and gain real-world experience as a reporter. This summer, the Osprey Observer had the pleasure of having five interns, Jordyn Kalman, Sean Crumpacker, Hailey Le Roy, Jasmine Haroun and Nur Suleiman, in their newsroom.

Jordyn Kalman University of Florida

Kalman is a sophomore at the University of Florida currently majoring in journalism. She chose this field of study after working on her high school newspaper for two years and then writing for The Alligator, one of the country’s largest student-run newspapers, in college. She loves journalism because it allows her to channel her passion for writing into something positive for the community. Her favorite part about working at the Osprey Observer this summer was collaborating with such a wonderful team and getting the chance to be more involved in the community she grew up in. During her time on staff, she continued to improve her writing and interviewing skills.

Hailey Le Roy Newsome High School

Kalman would like to say to the staff, “Thank you for making this whole experience so enjoyable. Shout out to Michelle for being awesome and always being there to give me advice and offer to help.”

Sean Crumpacker Newsome High School

Crumpacker will be entering his senior year at Newsome High School. He is not sure what college he would like to attend in the future, but he is considering UCF or Old Dominion. Crumpacker said he will most likely major in programming because he makes video games and codes as a hobby but is also considering journalism as a possibility. Crumpacker wanted to intern at the Osprey Observer because he loved the writing and journalism classes he has taken in school, so this was a great way to continue working on his skills over the summer. Crumpacker wanted to say to the staff, “Thanks to everyone at the office for being so helpful, friendly and responsive. This internship was a great opportunity, both for my own hobby and job experience, and I’m really grateful that I got to get involved with the Osprey Observer.”

Jasmine Haroun Newsome High School

Hailey Le Roy Newsome High School

Le Roy will be a sophomore this upcoming school year at Newsome High School. She is unsure of what college she would like to attend but is interested in journalism and environmental studies. After her journalism teacher told her about this opportunity, Le Roy wanted to intern at the Osprey Observer because writing has been her passion. She loves the Osprey Observer because of its focus on the local community and how it brings everyone together. In her time here, she has learned not just about the writing process, but also about the marketing and business side of the newspaper industry. Le Roy’s favorite part about working for the paper has been interviewing people and hearing first-hand the stories of people in the community. She would like to say to the staff, “Thank you to the entire staff for being so nice and helpful!”

Jasmine Haroun Newsome High School

Haroun is a rising sophomore at Newsome High School and hopes to one day go to her dream school, University of Florida, to study biological sciences. She wanted to intern at the Osprey Observer

Nur Suleiman Florida A & M University

because she has always valued the newspaper since it shows us the good going on around us, and people need to see the positives once in a while. Also, this gave Haroun the opportunity to enhance her writing skills. Jasmine would like to say, “Thank you so much to the Osprey Observer team for giving me this opportunity to see such a wonderful group of people impact and inspire the community.”

Nur Suleiman Florida A & M University

Suleiman is a rising second year student studying journalism at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. She chose Florida A&M because she wanted a change of pace and felt the university chose her. She wanted to intern at the Osprey Observer to advance her writing skills while she was home for the summer at a publication she loved to read in high school. Her favorite part about working here is being able to watch a topic transform into a story and to see her work published. Suleiman would like to say, “I would just like to thank the staff for this opportunity and tell them that they truly are amazing people.”

New Horizons Group Homes invites you to its annual barbeque and silent auction. The hope is that the funds received will help with the purchase of a minivan.

New Horizons Group Homes will hold its 24th annual barbeque and silent auction on Saturday, September 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is its major annual fundraiser. New Horizons is a nonprofit organization operating three homes for 19 developmentally challenged adults, most of whom work in the community or in various programs. The faith-based organization was started in 1992, with the first home opening in 1999. The barbeque will take place at the Central Baptist Christian School gymnasium, located on 402 E. Windhorst Rd. in Brandon. The meal includes a pulled pork barbecue sandwich with mac and cheese, baked beans, a beverage and dessert, and it will be catered by BubbaQue’s. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. For information on purchasing tickets, call the New Horizons office at 5712690 or Brenda Watkins at 653-2466. The silent auction will include a wide variety of items, with something to please every taste and pocketbook. All proceeds from the auction will go to New Horizons

miss.” This year, the hope is to generate enough funds to purchase a new minivan. The two minivans that are currently in use have over 100,000 miles on them. They are used to transport residents to work, day programs, doctor appointments and all other activities. If you are unable to attend the barbeque, please consider sponsoring it to help us reach this goal. You can send a check to New Horizons Group Homes, 109 E. Clay Ave., Brandon, FL 33510 and indicate that it is to sponsor the barbeque. New Horizons still has some keepsake ornaments available which will be available at the barbeque and silent auction. Ornaments are still available and can be found at McAuley Fine Jewelry on Oakfield Dr. and at New Horizons, or call Watkins at 653-2466. All ornaments are $10. Tickets may be purchased from board members, family members and friends and from the New Horizons office. Visit www.newhorizonshomes.org for more information.

New Affordable Apartment Complex Opens In Valrico For Seniors

By Kate Quesada

Laburnum Gardens, an 81-unit apartment complex for seniors, opened earlier this month in Valrico.

A new apartment complex in Valrico is helping to solve one of the area’s more difficult problems. Laburnum Gardens, located on Bloomingdale Ave., opened earlier this month and is offering affordable rental apartments for seniors. “All 81 units at Laburnum Gardens are reserved for seniors with incomes at or below 60 percent of the area’s median income,” said Todd Pratt, Hillsborough County’s Media Relations Strategist. Pratt explained that the maximum monthly rent will range from $502 for a one-bedroom unit to $904 for a two-bedroom apartment. Five of the units are designed for people with mobility challenges and two are for those with hearing or vision disabilities. “It is good and it’s clean, and the biggest thing is that it is new; brand-new,” said resident Armando Ocasio. “There are a couple of people that are in wheel

chairs and it makes it easier for them and it’s comfortable.” Developed by Southport Development, Inc., the complex was partly funded by Hillsborough County. The maximum income for prospective residents ranges from $18,760 to $40,140, depending on family size. “Such public-private partnerships are becoming increasingly valuable as State Housing Initiative Program (SHIP) funding has significantly declined in recent years,” said Pratt. Amenities at the complex include a clubhouse and community area, elevators in all buildings, a nature trail and boardwalk and a shuffleboard court. “In order to build a strong economy, people need a place to lay their heads at night so they can take care of their families and take care of their lives,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Kimberly Overman. “That foundation is key to a successful community and economy.” Laburnum Gardens is located at 1146 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico. For more information, visit the development’s website at www.laburnumgardens.com or call 278-5273.

The Mighty Miracles Of Jesus Calming The Stormy Sea

By Kelly Wise Valdes

During His ministry, Jesus performed more than 40 miracles, including healing the sick, changing the natural elements of nature and even raising people from the dead. A miracle is considered an event that occurs outside the bounds of natural law. Each month, we will take a closer look at one of His miracles to understand the depth of His love for us. Understanding the miracles of Jesus can change your life, and it all begins with believing through faith. One of the most well-known miracles in the Bible tells of when Jesus calmed the stormy Sea of Galilee. This miracle appears in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Jesus was looking to cross the sea to expand His ministry to the Gentiles. The disciples knew it was His will to go to the other side, and Jesus expected them to believe in the mission. However, soon after launch, Jesus laid down to sleep, and a violent storm started brewing. The waves were breaking over the edge of the boat, filling it with water. Many of the disciples were fishermen by trade and were familiar with storms on the Sea of Galilee. However, this was no ordinary storm, and they began to fear for their lives. Mark 4:37-41 tells us, “A furious squall came up, and the waves broke

over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said to Him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’ He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down, and it was completely calm. He said to His disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!’” Unlike His disciples, Jesus believed that they were going to make it to the other side. If Jesus was asleep, He must not have been worried, and so there should be no cause for them to be concerned either. After rebuking the storm, Jesus then rebuked His disciples, asking why they were so afraid and why they had wavered in their faith. The disciples were too astonished by what they had just seen to attempt to answer. But little did they know at the time that they would have another chance to use their faith against a storm in the Sea of Galilee, only next time, Jesus would not be in the boat with them. Even 2,000 years later, many Christians still sometimes panic during the storms of life. Storms in our lives are bound to happen. Some storms are so intense that even our deep and abiding faith may waver. Just like the disciples, being a follower of Jesus does not guarantee a storm-free life. Although Jesus was asleep in the boat, He was very much in control of the situation. So, even if there is a time where you do not feel God is in control while you are weathering your storm, your faith is what God is looking for.

Technology And Social Media's Influence

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Thanks to the internet and social media, the world is literally at our fingertips. We can post and tweet our status from almost anywhere, anytime. When we are not posting pictures of our dinners or making comments on other people's posts, we also use our devices to play games, listen to music and download apps. Apps that can do our grocery shopping, bring us food, or let us know what we will look like when we are old. Although all this technology can be helpful, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the access of so much information. We can become exhausted from managing our social media as well as keeping a watchful eye on our children's access to social media. How does this affect our faith as Christians? Are we spending more time scrolling through Instagram pictures than we are in our prayer life? Are we arguing with strangers on random political posts rather than spending our time with a daily devotional? Social media can bring out the best in us as we celebrate what God is doing in our lives. But it can also reveal envy, pettiness and a mean-spirited nature. As Christians, we must manage our digital lives with the grace and love of God as we should in our real-time lives.

What Would Jesus Post?: Seven Principles Christians Should Follow in Social Media By: Brian D. Wassom

Social media gives each of us enormous power to influence others for good or ill. But far too many Christians ignore the opportunities and undermine their own reputations through thoughtless words shared online. This book comes directly from the author's experiences as an attorney and a church leader and offers simple guidelines for exercising biblical wisdom in social media.

Plugged-In Parenting: How to Raise Media-Savvy Kids with Love, Not War By: Bob Waliszewski

Written for parents of children and teens, this book helps parents teach their kids media discernment. Today, children are exposed to cyberbullying, sexting, violence and sex on television and more. This book uses teachable moments, research, Scripture, parental example and a written family entertainment constitution to uphold biblical standards without damaging the parent-child relationship.

iGods: How Technology Shapes Our Spiritual and Social Lives By: Craig Detweiler

This book provides a needed Christian perspective on navigating today's social media culture. Major "iGods," such as Google, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter— impact the technologies and cultural phenomena that drive us. Church Of The Savior On Spilled Blood

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is an iconic landmark for residents of St. Petersburg, Russia as well as a tourist destination for thousands of travelers each year. With its famous onion-shaped domes and colorful exterior, this unique church closely resembles the famous St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, as both landmarks share similarities in color and design. The beauty of this structure is only surpassed by the rich and cultural history behind it. The church was first built in 1883 to honor the memory of Alexander II, who was responsible for the emancipation of serfs in 1861 that put an end to Russian slavery. The church stands in the very place where a bomb was thrown into his carriage by a young man who opposed the reforms by Alexander II. Construction lasted around 24 years, and then 27 years to restore after early Soviet vandalism of the church. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution in 1917, the church was vandalized and looted, severely damaging its interior. The Soviet government closed the church in 1932. During the Second World War,

when many people were starving due to the Siege of Leningrad by Nazi German military forces, the church was used as a temporary morgue for those who died in combat and from starvation and illness. After the war, it was used as a warehouse for

vegetables. In 1970, the church began a 27year restoration project. When it was re-opened in August 1997, it was not restored as an official place of worship. It now serves as a museum, tourist attraction and historical monument. The decades of deterioration and then restoration culminated in the dramatic reopening of the church in August 1997. Thousands of eager visitors swamped the church best known for its eye-catching colorful domes and being decorated with jeweler's enamel, crystal and topaz. Its multi-colored exterior makes the church stand apart from other buildings in St. Petersburg. Likewise, the breathtaking interior is more than 23,130 square feet and is considered the largest mosaic collection in Europe. The inside of the main dome of the church is decorated with the iconic mosaic painting of the Christ Pantocrator and is one of the most treasured art pieces. The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is now a museum and welcomes visitors year-round. For more information, visit www.saintpetersburg.com/cathedrals.

The Problem With Building Bigger Barns By Derek Maul But God said to him, ‘Fool, tonight you will die. Now who will get the things you have prepared for yourself?’ This is the way it will be for those who hoard things for themselves and aren’t rich toward God.” Luke 12:20-21 My wife, Rebekah, often accuses me of "shopping like a European." What she means is that I tend to go to the store every couple of days and buy just a few things, rather than do the classic "Stock up at the Sam's Club and stuff three weeks of food in the fridge" suburban American approach. She has a point. But seriously, I’d much rather keep my food in the grocery store and just pick up what I need once in a while—then let Publix pay to keep the freezer running. Besides, at least this way my fruit and vegetables tend to be fresher. But this week I really am shopping like a European because we are staying in our son Andrew's apartment in Dresden, Germany. That means we took the #3 tram into the city and came home with a bag stuffed with fresh vegetables and scallops and good German beer and I took over their kitchen, and it was wonderful. It was good to walk in the cool evening breeze and listen to the sounds of the city and fill the small apartment with good roasted veggie smells and relax after a long day. Such simple pleasures. And quite the

contrast after spending an instructive day touring the ‘Summer Residence’ of Saxony's Augustus II the Strong. We learned about Augustus when Rebekah and I took the bus along and over the Elbe on into the beautiful Saxon countryside. The gardens at ‘Schloss Pillnitz’ are extensive and interesting, but the palace and its surroundings comprise a spectacular example of what it means to suck every ounce of resource out of the surrounding population and apply it to the self serving extravagance and pleasure of just a few entitled people. It’s a pattern I see repeated over and over, and it never seems to turn out too well for anyone. We simply can’t live that way. This world i s beautiful, it is rich and it is not ours to own. It is ours to share. Just a thought here from the edge of what I know and at the edge of what is unknown…yet possible. Redemption is always possible. Derek Maul has written for many news outlets, including the Tampa Tribune, The United Methodist News Service, All Pro Dad, FOCUS Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul and many other publications. Hot Off The Christian News Wire Tim Tebow Celebrates 32nd Birthday With Goal To Fund 150 LifeChanging Surgeries At The Tebow CURE Hospital

In celebration of his 32nd birthday on August 14, Tim Tebow decided to forgo well-wishes and gifts in order to change the lives of less fortunate children in the Philippines. The idea first came to Tebow in 2018 when he first launched his 31 for 31 campaign in celebration of his 31st birthday, intending to fund 31 lifechanging surgeries. The fundraiser blew past its goal and raised more than $123,000, of which 100 percent went directly to the Tebow CURE Hospital. The funds helped provide care for children who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Tebow and his foundation decided to up the ante in 2019. The Tebow CURE Hospital was built on the foundation of the great partnership between the Tim Tebow Foundation and CURE International. Since opening in December 2014, there have been more than 17,000 patient visits, 3,300 surgeries and 4,000 faith expressions. Children arrive at the Tebow CURE Hospital, which specializes in

orthopedic surgeries for conditions like cleft lip, clubfoot, bowed legs, untreated burns and hydrocephalus. When the children leave, they are not only healed physically but spiritually as well. For more information about CURE International, visit www.cure.org.

A Christian Rapper Has The No. 1-Selling Album On Billboard

NF, a Christian rapper who has recorded songs with Toby Mac and Flame, has the top-selling album in the United States, according to Billboard last month. NF’s new album, The Search, grabbed the No. 1 spot, edging out Of Monsters and Men, Chance the Rapper, the Grateful Dead and Justin Moore. NF's songs are free from the coarse language that litters much rap music. The Christian label Capitol

Christian Music Group (CMG) released two of his first three albums. “I’m a Christian, but I’m just an artist,” said NF. “To me, it's like if you’re a Christian and you’re a plumber, are you a Christian plumber? That’s the easiest way for me to explain it.” NF, whose real name is Nathan John Feuerstein, has drawn comparisons to the rapper Eminem, who he credits with influencing his style. NF rapped on Christian artist Toby Mac’s song, Till the Day I Die. NF also rapped with Christian artist Flame on his song, Start Over. For more information, visit www.nfrealmusic.com.

Mister Rogers' Life Was A Perfect Example Of Faith In Action

Rogers' Neighborhood. A native of Pennsylvania, Rogers—played by actor Tom Hanks in the forthcoming film—died in 2003. But his legacy of kindness has long surpassed him. Rogers was not just benevolent for benevolence's sake, his commitment to goodwill likely originated from his faith. Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister and was committed to treating those around him with God’s love. Throughout his career, Rogers did not often specifically reference his faith, but during an interview many years ago with Charlie Rose, Rogers credited Jesus for his commitment to reaching children. His was a ministry of benevolence, and it is still alive and well today. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood hits theaters on Friday, November 22. Seffner Christian The Crusaders are coming off their best season in the school’s 11-year football history, in which they went undefeated in the regular season, making a deep playoff run and eventually losing to 2A-powerhouse Admiral Farragut Academy 20-7. They went 11-1 overall under fourth-year Head Coach Travis Puelo. Seffner Christian Academy is poised to make another playoff run this season, but they will first have to get through a tough regular season schedule. They are led by senior Navy commit and quarterback Isaiah Knowles. The duel-threat quarterback was an All-State selection last season and threw for 2,160 yards with 34 touchdowns and just five interceptions while rushing for 275 yards and five touchdowns on 52 carries (5.3 avg). Coach Puelo raves about Knowles’ football knowledge, game-planning and preparation, as well as his leadership and work ethic. Knowles has been a team captain for the last three seasons. Senior captain Justin Stubbs is the team’s leading returning

rusher with 790 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. Junior tight end Michael Trigg was an All-State selection last season. He is a special athlete and has an offer to play football and basketball for USF, among other schools. Senior mic linebacker Tristan Kistler is considered the quarterback of the defense; he led the team in total tackles with 133 and 10 tackles for loss last season. He is the top academic player on the team and will potentially play for an Ivy League school. Junior Niko Fowler anchors down the offensive line, which Coach Puelo believes is the strength of his team. Clay Wedin has a lot of potential as a 6-6, 275-pound ninth-grader at the left tackle position. They are a multiple-look spread team, but they will run first to set up the pass behind their big O-line, which averages around 270 pounds. Seffner Christian definitely has the talent to make a run in the 2A division.
