CHRISTIAN VOICE MERGES WITH OSPREY OBSERVER
After 27 years of publishing positive Christian news in the community, the Christian Voice Monthly is excited to announce its new partnership with Osprey Observer newspapers to direct-mail Christian news to the community.
The original business model of the Christian Voice Monthly was to be directly distributed to 450 local churches, schools and Christian businesses in the community.
In 2009, Osprey Observer Inc. purchased the Christian Voice Monthly from the original owner and founders, Matt and Tammy Seifter. Since that time, Christian Voice expanded throughout the community and eventually began printing 10,000 editions per month.
“We were in more than 6,000 backpacks of faith-based students in our community each month,” said managing editor Marie Gilmore from her Valrico ofce, “and in local businesses, including the library, local YMCAs, Chick-fil-A and other local businesses.”
“However, once schools were shut down from the pandemic and then community access and restrictions limited our delivery area, it was harder and harder to distribute the Christian Voice Monthly,” she added.
After many months of discussion and planning, the editors and colum-
nists of the Christian Voice Monthly decided that rather than eliminate the Christian Voice from the community entirely, it could stay alive in the direct-mail Osprey Observer newspapers.
Currently, the Osprey Observer publishes four award-winning editions per month out of its ofces and delivers its editions throughout the community. Editions include the Osprey Observer Bloomingdale/ FishHawk, Osprey Observer Riverview/Apollo Beach, Osprey Observer Valrico and Osprey Observer Brandon.
“We feel that we can better serve the positive news of our faith-based community with its new partnership with the Osprey Observer newspapers, and we are excited to continue to cover good news,” said Gilmore.
In February 2009, Osprey Ob-
server Inc., the parent company of the Osprey Observer Community Newspapers, completed the purchase of the East Hillsborough Christian Voice. The Christian Voice, published locally by the Seifters, had been covering local Christian news for 11 years.
The Seifters were excited with the opportunity that the Osprey Observer staf brought to the then 12page monthly and were happy to see the paper continue to thrive and grow throughout the years.
At the time of the sale, Seifter had added, “We always did this as a family business, with the strength of the Osprey team behind it, I have no doubt this paper will find even greater success.”
For more information or to submit a story idea or press release to the Osprey Observer newspapers, please visit www.ospreyobserver. com. We thank the community for supporting the locally owned and operated Christian Voice Monthly for 27 years, 10 months and eight editions.

LIGHTHOUSE GOSPEL HAS BEEN HELPING PEOPLE SINCE 1952
In December 1952, the Reverend J.A. Lennard had a vision to establish a place where people who are facing powerful temptations of addiction could find hope and rehabilitation. Thus, Lighthouse Gospel Mission was born. On Friday, October 20, the Lighthouse Gospel Mission will hold its annual Partners Banquet at 7 p.m.
Over the years since its inception, Lighthouse Gospel Mission has grown and now o f ers those who are hungry, hurting and addicted multiple areas of ministry.
Minister Nikki Santana, who has been in the media department of Lighthouse Gospel Mission for 12 years, gave a succinct explanation of the ministries o f ered.
Santana said, “The Lighthouse has expanded to become a multifaceted ministry. Within the Lighthouse, we have the Faith Home Ministry, an 18-month residential discipleship program for men and women addicted to drugs and alcohol.”
Santana added, “We also have a church for the
community called Lighthouse Freedom Center. We are a church on fire for Jesus with services held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and on Sundays at 10 a.m.”
Santana explained, “The Lighthouse Remnant Thrift Store is an amazing store with great prices, and all proceeds go toward the Faith Home Ministry and Lighthouse Gospel Mission to support our work within the community.”
Santana said, “And finally, Operation Hope, the outreach arm of Lighthouse Gospel Mission, is our food ministry. We hold food outreaches ev -
ery Thursday between 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. We also o f er our Holidays of Hope outreach every Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
The Operation Hope food ministry distributes over 2.4 million pounds per year to families in need. It serves as a local distribution point for ministries in Tampa Bay to bring food to their communities.
Finally, its Taste of Freedom Food Truck is the newest and most delicious enterprise of Lighthouse Gospel Mission yet. Here, it serves sandwiches, empanadas and much more. All proceeds go to Lighthouse Gospel Mission.
Tickets for the annual Partners Banquet start with single tickets, which are available for purchase at $50 each. If you are interested in partnering at a higher level by purchasing a table of eight, there are multiple sponsorships available.

The pumpkin patch at Grace Community United Methodist Church (UMC) at FishHawk is returning again this year on Saturday, October 7 and will be open weekdays between 2-7 p.m. and weekends between 11 a.m.-7 p.m. through Tuesday, October 31. “Last year was our first time hosting a pumpkin patch at our church,” said Andrea Reardon, charter member of Grace Community UMC at FishHawk. “It was such a success that we planned to do it again this year. I worked the pumpkin patch at my church in South Florida and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and jumped at the chance to volunteer here in Lithia. It’s fun to talk with the customers and see the looks on children’s faces as they pick the perfect pumpkin or gourd for their home.”
The pumpkin patch was the vision of the church’s former pastor, Tracie Ashley. “We had an amazing volunteer response from the church, Newsome, ROTC and the Boy Scouts, which contributed to the success of the patch,” Reardon said. “Our youth minister, Greg Rusch, gathered pallets, raised a tent, added lighting and built a set for photos.”
The pumpkins are sourced from Pumpkins USA, established in 1974. “Their pumpkins are grown on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Farmington, NM,” Reardon said. “They are grown in cooperation with
the Navajo Nation, Pumpkins USA.
The pumpkins are grown on 1,200 acres, which is approximately 2 square miles of pumpkins, and employs more than 700 Native Americans during harvest.”
Grace Community UMC at FishHawk is focused on serving its community through a program called ‘Grace Serves.’
“Each month, a project is selected that Grace Community will support by volunteering time or donating needed items,” Reardon said. “Last month, our service project was providing back-to-school supplies for Pinecrest Elementary. Funds from the patch will be raised to support these programs.”
Reardon and the rest of the congregation at Grace Community UMC at FishHawk love that the pumpkin patch has returned for another year.
“There are many things I like about working in the pumpkin patch.” Reardon said. “I love seeing the excitement on children’s faces as they walk the patch looking for the perfect pumpkin.”
If you would like to learn more about the Grace Community UMC at FishHawk or want volunteer at the pumpkin patch, you can visit the church’s website at www. mygraceumc.com. The church is located at 5708 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. in Lithia.

Grace Notes Speaking Out
By Debora Coty
“The fear of public disgrace never forced me to keep silent,” (Job 31:34 CEV).
Public speaking. Does the phrase make your liver quiver? It does that to a lot of people, including me. Yet that’s what the Lord has called me to do. Go figure.
My stage jitters are no better today than the first time I spoke to an audience back in 2010 about handling stress, the topic of my Too Blessed to be Stressed book series. Ah, the irony! The ‘expert’ on stress management, hiding in a bathroom, a quivering mass of nerves, trying to pull it together before mounting a stage to speak to 200 people about a topic she obviously was not qualified to talk about.
Yet that was exactly where I was supposed to be. The Almighty knew that none of us fallible humans are qualified as experts on handling stress in every situation, and here was another scenario He was handing me to qualify me as unqualified.
Humility is the best teacher. Total dependency on Papa God is the only answer.
I started quoting a little psalm I’d learned as a child, “When I am afraid, I will trust in Thee,” (Psalm 56:3). I said it over and over and louder and firmer until the words penetrated the self-convicting cry of “Fraud!” screaming in my brain.
My panic was gradually replaced with supernatural calm and peace that surpasses all comprehension.
I felt assured that every other person in that building who also secretly felt like a fraud was in the process of being transformed into a new creation by the love of Christ. Just like me. Maybe one of them needed encouragement from a fellow fraud that evening.
As I dabbed my sweaty face, my pounding heartbeat returned to near normal and my lungs once again allowed air to move in and out. But I kept repeating that verse until I launched into the message I suddenly believed in more than ever.
“With his love, he will calm all your fears,” (Zephaniah 3:17 NLT).

In a remarkable display of compassion and interfaith cooperation, a local congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has extended a helping hand to a neighboring church, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Stephen Catholic Church, with a generous donation of $15,000 in cash and an additional $15,000 worth of food to bolster its food pantry efforts.
The charitable act unfolded as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came together last week to deliver the gift. This gift is expected to augment the capacity of the food pantry, which serves as a lifeline for many local residents experiencing food insecurity.
Marc Bernhisel, Brandon Florida Stake communications director of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, explained the motivation behind the generous initiative.
“It’s important to find commonality so we can support one another as others respond to the needs of our neighbors,” he said.
His wife, Julee Bernhisel, assistant communications director, agrees. “The more we reach out to other faiths, it brings the faith community together,” she said. “It’s just a wonderful thing.”
After all, the Lord Jesus Christ has directed everyone to “love thy neighbor”
(Mark 12:31).
Denise Essex, president of the St. Stephen
Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, expressed profound gratitude for the substantial contribution, which is expected to make a significant diference in the lives of local families grappling with food insecurity. “It was extremely generous and it’s going to make a huge diference for the pantry as we help those in the community in need,” Essex said. “We’re all volunteers, so all the money that comes in goes right back out to the community.”
Essex said the number of families the pantry serves has increased in recent months amid the ongoing economic challenges of inflation. In March, the pantry served 190 families. In June, the number increased to 209 families.
“In general, everyone is feeling the impact of the increase in expenses, whether at the grocery store to the higher electric bills and rent,” she said.
The pantry, located at St. Stephen Catholic School at 10118 St. Stephen Cir. in Riverview, is open for food distribution every Friday from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Please bring a photo ID. In addition to food assistance, the society provides other aid, which may take the form of consultation, financial support or in-kind service.

FOR THE LOVE OF COFFEE!
ENJOY A DELICIOUS CUP AT ONE OF THE MANY LOCAL COFFEE SHOPS IN THE COMMUNITY
While cofee has been around since the 15th century, one Seattle-based cofee shop put the delicious drink on the map. Once cofee became popular after the Boston Tea Party in 1773, Starbucks popularized the drink in 1971 by expanding its reach to gain loyal customers nationwide.
According to a recent survey, Tampa is ranked number six across America as one of the best cofee cities. When you take a look at all the cofee shops in the community, you can see that the area loves delectable cofee.
While Starbucks might have started the trend, Dunkin’ soon gained fame in the early 1980s after opening its doors in 1950. Starting out as just donuts and cofee,
tions to choose from, no matter what you choose, you can always get a delicious cofee from Dunkin’. The Dunkin’ located on Fishhawk Blvd. is open from 5 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week.
Though Cali Cafe ofers more than just cofee, its Columbian classic is hard to beat. This local cofee shop makes everything in-house, so it is fresh every day. From the breakfast Cuban to the cafe con leche and everything in between, customers are loving Cali Cafe.
Though this shop might have some extravagant drink options, Chill Cawfee wants you to be able to relax when you step foot into the shop.
“I love connecting with the community, the few minutes that our customers spend with us to get their cofee in the morning brings me happiness,” said Lisa Quigley, owner of Chill Cawfee.
The shop will be expanding this year to add retro games and extended hours. Chill Cawfee, located at 3407 Lithia Pinecrest Rd., is open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m.5 p.m., and on Sunday, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The Louie Beans Cofee Co. truck serves the Tampa area cofee, tea and flavored soda. The truck has five signature drinks that include things like pistachio, toasted marshmallows and lavender.
“I enjoy being able to make people’s day by serving them things they love,” said Jennifer Mantilla, owner of Louie Beans.
Mantilla stated that no matter what your cofee preference is, Louie Bean can create something for you.
“I have people who need cafeine but hate the taste of cofee,” said Mantilla, “others love the taste but cannot have caffeine. Don’t worry, we got you.”
Find Louie Beans at 106 N. U.S. Hwy. 41 in Ruskin from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday.
Cofee comes in all shapes, sizes, flavors and temperatures, and every person has their favorite way to drink it. With all the shops that ofer unique versions of the classic cofee, step out of your comfort zone and try one of the fun, new flavors that cofee has to ofer.

A key requirement of being the CEO of me is initiative — understanding that I have to take action and make decisions without always waiting for instructions. No one is responsible for helping us to be successful. We have to develop a certain independent mindset in order to get there.
In the federal government’s tax code, there is something called a 1099 form used for reporting income that people earn outside of a job. It means that if you do not make something happen, then you earn nothing. You are an independent contractor and can only eat what

“8 And God is able to make all grace [every favor and earthly blessing] come in abundance to you, so that you may always [under all circumstances, regardless of the need] have complete sufciency in everything [being completely self-sufcient in Him], and have an abundance for every good work and act of charity.”

FIRST LADIES FARM GIVES HOPE TO CATS, KITTENS AND DOMESTIC POULTRY
First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) organization in Riverview. It specializes in rescuing cats, but more specifically, this unique nonprofit is an urban farm and sanctuary. It ofers cat rescue, adoptions and a working barn cat program.
First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary provides the animals with love, care and a safe haven for as long as it takes to find them forever homes. Through its Street Strife to Farm Life Working Cat Program, the sanctuary reimagines the traditional TNVR (trap-neuter-vaccinate-return), to reduce the population of stray and unwanted cats in the community by placing them at farms, barns and other businesses in need of natural pest control.
This women and veteran-owned organization grew out of a passion for rescuing cats and kittens, but as the name suggests, it does so much more by also rescuing domestic poultry, such as chickens, ducks, geese and peafowl.
Many of the animals that are rescued have critical needs. They have been dumped, abused and even, in some cases, victims of arson. The organization started with one coop and six hens who were named after first ladies of the United States.
First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary is the only sanctuary/rescue for domestic poultry on the Florida Gulf Coast. It is often the last, best and only chance for animals such

as cats and poultry with critical needs in the area.
Over the years,
First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary has placed numerous animals in new homes. In 2018, it placed 13 kittens in new homes. In 2019, this number rose to 53 kittens, and then in 2020 the number dramatically rose to over 300.
First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary is not backed by large corporations and does not receive grants, and so it relies on the generosity of local people who donate. It maintains a low operational overhead, is very resourceful and knows how to make its dollars go as far as possible.
Chelsea Edmonds with First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary said, “We are a local rescue doing the hard work in Southeast Hillsborough County. We host adoptions and a local market featuring home-canned jams and jellies, fresh duck and chicken eggs and goat cheese. Check us out on Facebook under Events under Market information as well as scheduled events.”
First Ladies Farm and Sanctuary is located at 13028 Shadow Run Blvd. in Riverview. For more information, please visit https://firstladiesfarm.com/.

Hooked On Books: Falling for God This Autumn
By Kelly Wise Valdes
Welcome to the fall season! Who’s not looking forward to pumpkin spice lattes, the smell of bonfires and a respite from the intense summer heat? Au-
tumn is a beautiful season of transformation. Although we may not experience a colorful fall-leaf season like many of the northern states, many of us still consider autumn as a time of spiritual reflection. We are reminded that the cycles of nature are mirrored in our lives as Christians. It’s a time for letting go of the things that have burdened us. And as always, we are reminded that God loves us unconditionally through all of our seasons of life. As Jeremiah 5:24 says: “They do not say in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the Lord our God, who gives the rain in its season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, and keeps for us the weeks appointed for the harvest.’”

MEDICARE INFORMATION PROJECT HELPS THE COMMUNITY WITH OPTIONS
With the annual election period just around the corner, deciphering Medicare can be a difcult task.
When Pastor Jay Molina and his wife, Charlene, were looking for a new home for their church, they felt Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association was the perfect fit. “After COVID, having our lead pastor move to Michigan, sharing a building with another church in the middle of nowhere and not meeting until noon on Sundays, we needed to find a place that we could call home, that was centrally located and where we could meet on Sunday mornings,” said Molina. “After searching for six months, God led us to Center Place, and we knew we were home right from the beginning. It has been a wonderful place to regroup and find out who we are as a church. Center Place has given us stability and we have grown to love it here.”
The church has had many new and exciting things happen over the last year.
“During the last year we rebranded from JesusChurch to Tampa Bay Vineyard to acknowledge our roots and we have developed our own identity,” Molina said. “Our people have become a much more homogenous and mature group of people and we are now ready for the mission that God has for us. We are a people of the kingdom who
Tampa Bay Vineyard is passionate for Jesus and partners with the Holy Spirit so that the proclamation and demonstration of God’s kingdom go hand in hand. As part of its values, it prays for the sick, confronts injustice and seeks to hear the voice of God on behalf of others.
“Now that we have stabilized and found our footing, we want to start reaching out to the community and to the unchurched,” Molina said. “Our first step in this process is to start hosting ALPHA, which is directed at nonchurched people who might have questions about God, faith, the Bible, Jesus and the meaning of life. It is a place where people can come just as they are, and they are going to be heard and hopefully find some answers.”
Tampa Bay Vineyard meets on Sundays at 10 a.m. and has small groups during the week that meet in people’s homes. ALPHA meets at Center Place on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m., and is dinner provided.

LIFE’S TREASURES THRIFT STORE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS IN BRANDON
Life’s Treasures
Thrift Store in Brandon is celebrating 10 years of serving the Brandon community through the store and its support of LifePath Hospice’s patient and family programs in Hillsborough County. In recognition of the milestone, a celebration was held at the Brandon store for volunteers and customers, including snacks, live music, gift basket giveaways and a 50 percent of sale.
The support of the LifePath Hospice programs would not be possible without the revenue generated by Life’s Treasures Thrift Stores.
“One of the biggest things that we say here at the store is every $500 in sales that we generate we are able to send a kid to our children’s grief camp,” said Brad Powell, director of thrift stores.
LifePath Hospice also ofers free bereavement services to all community members and fulfills wish requests for its patients.
“It’s a real saving grace for the loved ones that need to take that somewhere,” Powell said. “And we’re more than happy to take it on because it helps us push our mission forward.”
There are five Life’s Treasures Thrift

Stores in Hillsborough and Pasco counties that operate in support of LifePath Hospice under the Chapters Health System, and through the revenue raised at the stores along with donations from generous customers, $2.7 million has been donated to support programs in the Greater Tampa area.
The Brandon store, opened on September 23, 2013, is the youngest of five Life’s Treasures stores in the Tampa area. Hope Wolf has volunteered at the store for nearly 10 years. As a merchandiser, she is responsible for decorating the store, including switching out displays to showcase new items to customers.
“Everyone is so friendly. I’ve met lots of nice people,” Wolf said. “This is a good cause. … You feel kind of good that you’re here to help them.”
In its 10 years in Brandon, the biggest challenge Life’s Treasures has faced was how quickly the store grew. “They’re our engine,” said Powell about the volunteers. “Without them, we couldn’t do it.”

52ND ANNUAL NOVEMBERFEST AT NATIVITY CATHOLIC WILL FEATURE RIDES, FOOD, GAMES AND TRIVIA
Nativity Catholic Church will host its 52nd annual Novemberfest from Thursday through Sunday, November 16 through 19, featuring a selection of food, rides and games for families.
“It’s family. It’s food. It’s fun rides. It’s seeing people from the community, people you went to high school with, people you go to church with, people you work with. It’s Brandon,” said Abby Watts, entertainment co-chair. “On one hand, there’s nothing new. But people are always changing, and new people are coming in, and that’s kind of the beauty of it.”
This year’s entertainment lineup will feature Nativity alums, community performances and professional-level trivia for the first time under the big tent.
Aside from a field filled with rides and games for carnival lovers, the big tent will feature live music every night, broadcast sports and craft beers.
Jesuit High School student and Nativity graduate Carlos Lamoutte and his band will perform Sunday night to close out the weekend of entertainment.
Novemberfest is made possible each year with the help of a dedicated and hardworking volunteer staf. It takes around 9,000 volunteer hours to organize and manage Novemberfest every year.
“It’s a big undertaking, but I think every-

body pulls together because it’s important to the school, it’s important to the church and I think it’s important for any community,” Watts said. Tickets are available online, but Watts said, “The best way to purchase tickets is through one of the students at the school because they have class competitions, and they can earn wristbands for themselves and things like that. It’s just a great way to support the kids as well as support the event.” Single-day ride armbands will cost $19 if purchased in advance or $25 at the event. Guests can purchase $10 worth of food tickets for just $9 ahead of the event. Armband and ticket presales begin Friday, October 6 and end Sunday, November 12.
“To me, this is how you give back. This is how you are part of the greater community. … For 52 years, it’s been this hometown event. I think … Brandon’s such a special community, and Novemberfest is just a tiny snapshot of what makes Brandon so great,” Watts said.
Novemberfest will be hosted at 705 E Brandon Blvd., on the corner of Bryan Road and U.S. Highway 60, on the Nativity Catholic School and Church campus. www.nativitycatholicchurch.org/novemberfest or email nfestentertainment@gmail.com.

GROW INTO YOU FOUNDATION
GALA TO MARK PROGRAM GRADUATES’ SUCCESS
On Thursday, October 19, Grow Into You Foundation will be hosting its fourth annual gala at the Winthrop Barn Theatre in Riverview as both an in-person and virtual event. Beginning at 7 p.m., this event’s ‘Fear Not’ theme will honor young adults who have aged out of the foster care system and passed through this organization’s program, signifying their first steps into adulthood and independence.
In addition to celebrating their ‘graduation’ by walking across the stage, Grow Into You Foundation gifts the young adults memorabilia and pictures that are reminiscent of their time in the program. Furthermore, graduates can present videos highlighting their individual journeys and successes.
“It’s a really cool opportunity to very intimately get to see where these kids were and where they’ve come, and to see it through their eyes of what has been valuable to them,” said Erin NeSmith, Grow Into You Foundation founder and lead coach.
Founded in 2016, Grow Into You Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that focuses on ofering adolescents who are in or have aged out of foster care, primarily 18 to 23-year-olds, the tools necessary to make informed and independent decisions while charting their own path forward. While coaching conversations are also facilitated over the phone, texts and Zoom, NeSmith said she often speaks with kids the most over shared meals.
As a certified life coach, NeSmith has
By Madeline Gardner
developed a threepronged plan to empower these adolescents to take control of their lives: helping them shift their perspectives, restoring power and planting hope. Aiming first to alter their attitudes toward their present situations and goals, NeSmith then focuses on emphasizing that each individual has the freedom to prioritize their choices and plan their next move. Lastly, planting hope focuses on challenging these teens to overcome obstacles while maintaining confidence in their abilities.
“I tell them I can support anything that’s healthy and safe,” said NeSmith. “So, it’s giving them the tools to be able to move forward and get over blocks that might be in their way, and identifying those blocks, talking through those blocks, making plans and putting things in place that help them with success.”
The foundation also provides life-giving experiences, which are initiatives that work toward instilling kids in the program with more positive experiences, often through providing them with traditions; some of these traditions include its annual Thanksgiving potluck and Christmas party. Furthermore, networking is made possible by the foundation through its Volunteers at the Ready program, which allows members of the community to help kids with everyday errands or finding employment.

MEET CHARLIE CLARK, HCA FLORIDA BRANDON HOSPITAL’S CANINE EXECUTIVE OFFICER
With the assistance of her beloved Labrador retriever Charlie Clark, Dr. Danielle Clark is making a diference in the lives of pediatric patients and staf members at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital.
Fate played a significant role in Danielle and Charlie’s journey together. Danielle and her husband, Ron Clark, had contemplated getting a dog for quite some time, so when an acquaintance chose to rehome their dog, destiny spoke. Despite her longtime fear of dogs, Danielle fell in love with Charlie right away, and he has become a vital member of their family. Charlie entered the Clarks’ lives at a critical crossroads.
“An angel on Earth while I navigated a hard time in my life,” said Danielle when describing Charlie’s personal influence after they adopted him.
After witnessing Charlie’s caring, social and clever character, the Clarks decided they wanted Charlie to be of service to his community in some capacity. Charlie, then 2 years old, began his training to become an emotional support animal in 2020, working extensively with a trainer for over six months. Despite the early limits set forth by COVID-19 guidelines, Charlie and Danielle have been successful in their endeavors to positively contribute to their community during the last three years of his service.
Ron’s connection to the hospital is what started their adventure there. Ron works as the facilities supervisor, and when he
By Kayleigh Jones
brought the notion of Charlie working at the hospital to the human resources department, they loved the idea and were excited to meet Charlie. Charlie started working at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital in the spring of this year. Wearing an ofcial employee badge that identifies him as CEO — canine executive ofcer — he has refined his talents and shared his afection with many in a short time. From visiting patients’ bedsides for hugs and pets to strolling along the corridors and greeting everyone he meets with a tail wag, Charlie is a ray of warmth at the hospital.
Charlie has a significant impact at the hospital because with his empathic nature, he makes people feel loved, and in the moment helps bring a little sunshine into people’s lives. His presence assists people in dealing with complex emotions such as stress or anxiety. Danielle said that after conquering her fear of dogs and seeing the wonderful dog Charlie is, “the most rewarding part for me is knowing how much I’ve opened up my heart and mind to really understand dogs.”
Although Charlie plays a serious role at the hospital, at heart he is still a Labrador retriever who enjoys his food and toys, which Danielle believes adds to the beauty of the connections Charlie creates. To connect mail drdanielleclark@gmail.com. HCA Florida Brandon Hospital is located at 119 Oakfield Dr. in Brandon.

SINKING CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH ELIZABETHTON, TENNESSEE
Searching for the colorful autumn leaves takes many of us up north to view the beautiful red and orange foliage. If you find yourself in northeast Tennessee near Bristol, you may consider a brief detour to visit Elizabethton, Tennessee. Elizabethton is the historical site of the first independent American government (known as the Watauga Association, created in 1772) located west of the Eastern Continental Divide and the original Thirteen Colonies.
But, in this small and unassuming town is Sinking Creek Baptist Church — the oldest church in Tennessee. The church has been standing for more than 200 years and comes with a fascinating history. Known afectionately as the ‘Old Log Church,’ this building has been standing since 1783. The structure still consists of its original logs.
During the late 1700s, life was filled with hardship, and survival was the highest priority. It was during this time that this small farming community began gather-
ing together to worship and eventually built the church together. It was a simple log structure with flat, wooden pews and a wooden alter.
In the early days, written accounts state that services were halted because of Native American attacks. Neary

a decade later, services were paused again because the Civil War began in the United States. Unfortunately, the Civil War had ravaged the land, but miraculously the church survived relatively unscathed. Because of its deep historical past, it is now a historical landmark.
Sinking Creek Baptist Church has held continuous worship services since it was built in 1783, except for during the Civil War. However, the congregants now have a much newer building. A new church building was erected in 1963, but the congregation never abandoned their roots. The new building is located on the same property and quite literally adjacent to the original church.
Over the years, countless people have traveled from all over the country to visit Sinking Creek. The church still has a guest register dating back to the 1960s that shows the names of people who have visited it. Sinking Creek Baptist Church is located at 2313 Elizabethton Hwy. For more information, visit www.sinkingcreek.org.
Live Like You Mean It ... Children Defne The Word ‘Promise’: A Commentary On Leadership
“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these,’” (Matthew 19:14).
Our grandson Geofrey is — and this is the best possible description — “a pistol.” At 2 and a half, he is our youngest, and he shines with a brightness that is both startling and humbling. But it is not just because how God has gifted him as a human being; he shines as a reflection of the love and light and belief and positive energy all around him.
To me, our grandchildren represent all that is good and hope-filled and bursting with possibility on this conflicted and wartorn planet. Children don’t just give me hope, they define the word ‘promise.’ God
has saturated them with so much love and purpose and goodness and grace and set them loose in this world to do great things.
When Jesus reminded his followers that “the kingdom belongs to such as these,” he
was telling all of us that when we gift the world around us with our positive energy — our light, our enthusiasm, our joy, our encouragement, our ebullience — then we are very much bringing in the kingdom.
In a sense, then, this column is not just about childlike faith but also commentary on leadership.
Sadly (and I’m sad because I am someone who loves church all the way to the bottom of my heart), I read something recently that demonstrated leading others in the exact opposite way from the trajectory of Christ’s teachings. Believe it or not, it was a ‘state of the church’ report from local leadership in a church I know that is struggling.
Unlike the bright witness of children, the message was saturated with unbelief, with
By Derek Maul
negative expectations, with defeatism and with resignation — not to mention poor theology. The good news message, however, literally vibrates with joy and expectation and belief and light and encouragement.
So, listen to Jesus. Be. Like. These. Children.
I think that should probably generate an “amen”! — DEREK.

ADOPT A HILLSBOROUGH TEACHER PROGRAM RECOGNIZED AT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
The Hillsborough County School Board, along with Interim Superintendent
Van Ayers, recognized the Adopt a Hillsborough Teacher program and its founder, Brooke Elkins, at the August 22 school board meeting.
School board member Jessica Vaughn (District 3) gave the recognition. She shared that through the Adopt a Hillsborough Teacher program thousands of teachers have had their classroom supply needs provided for by community members.
“This initiative has demonstrated the unity in our collective community. The school board and interim superintendent Van Ayers want to acknowledge and thank the continued eforts of Ms. Elkins in supporting our educators. She is a truly a community champion who supports our mission of preparing students for life. Thank you for making us Hillsborough Strong,” she said.
In July of 2020, Elkins and Lorra Gilman started the Adopt a Hillsborough Teacher Facebook group to support teachers and their needs as they started teaching during the pandemic. Gilman was a teacher in Hillsborough County and Elkins had been a teacher as well. Their teaching experience made them keenly aware of the struggles teachers were having. In the group, teach-

ers can share their needs by posting Amazon wish lists and community members can purchase their specific items from the lists.
Elkins appreciates the gratitude and recognition from the school board.
“I feel it’s significant because it shows that the school board recognizes that there is a lack of public school funding that teachers so desperately need in order to help their students be successful,” Elkins said.
Elkins shared that she is passionate about helping teachers because they constantly put the kids first, even before themselves.
“One of the messages that I want people to understand is how much these teachers care about the quality of learning these kids have. They often are willing to supply the needs out of their own pocket. It doesn’t cost much to show a teacher you care. A pack of pencils or a box of tissues can go a long way,” Elkins said.
Being part of the Adopt a Hillsborough Teacher program is simple: request to join the Adopt a Hillsborough Teacher Facebook group. The group currently has over 17,000 members. Elkins is still an admin, along with Hillsborough County teacher Emily Lee and community member and parent Jennifer Abadi.
Over 26 million individuals sufer from hearing impairment, and they deserve an organization that cares. A+ Hearing Center has been just that for the community.
A+ Hearing is now located at 835 Cypress Village Blvd. in Sun City Center. The new shop is double the size, on the first floor and is still golf cart accessible.
Rather than just increasing hearing, Don and Chris Guiley, the owners of A+ Hearing, are passionate about helping others increase their understanding.
“You don’t know what you don’t hear,” said Don. “If you are sufering from hearing loss, you won’t know what you are missing.”
Don explained that while less expensive, many over-the-counter hearing aids will only allow the user to adjust the volume and noise level rather than adjust frequencies based on an individual’s needs. While increasing the volume of your surroundings might sound like a solution, it can actually harm you.
“I had somebody recently whose hearing aids were not helping at all. She put the new hearing aids in and was amazed,” said Chris. “We had her daughter turn her back to talk and the customer could now hear every word.”
The nerves in your ears that hear high frequencies are some of the first nerves that noise hits. Because 70 percent of an in-

dividual’s hearing comes from high frequencies, these nerves are being broken down throughout your lifetime, and increasing the volume can make this worse.
When you visit A+ Hearing, Don and Chris will be able to customize the settings of your hearing aid to fit exactly what you are missing. By doing this, they are able to allow customers to gain understanding without further damaging their nerves.
“We can retrain the brain, but we cannot regrow those nerves,” said Don.
To stay on top of the constant technological advancements in the industry, Don and Chris visit conferences and seminars often.
A+ Hearing ofers some of the most advanced hearing aids, including ones with geolocators, automatic emergency call services and remote programming. Don explained that some hearing aids can be controlled from his ofce even if you are across the world.
When the Guileys moved to Florida, Don operated a theater and Chris began to work at the hearing aid shop next door. The owner asked Chris to get her license so she could help sell hearing aids. Later, Chris and Don decided to open their own shop so they could truly become a part of the community and help those who are sufering from hearing loss.

“Our organization is a beautiful place for students to grow and develop. It’s not just about the competitions but bettering their gifts. Knowing that there is a place to explore your talents and try new things is important,” explained Ruth Spiegel, president and executive director of Overflow Fine Arts.
In the choir category, the group went up against institutions that had quadruple the number of their members. They additionally chose to take on a contemporary Christian or worship approach, unlike many others who took a more gospel route. Despite appearing diferent, the group focused

on perfecting their technique and working hard until eventually winning first place.
“It was the first time ever in the top three and first was just so exciting. The students couldn’t believe it. We owed it to always staying true to who we were and trusting the Lord,” said Spiegel.
Alongside the internal strengthening that the fine arts produce, participants are introduced to many special opportunities. Students are often rewarded for their hard work and talent with scholarships that can benefit them in future endeavors.
“My son is about to start his second year of college. While being a part of the fine arts program, he got second place in the nation, awarding him a $3,000 scholarship. It’s a big help as a parent wanting a good future for their children,” said Ronnie Rivera, treasurer of Overflow Fine Arts and a fine arts parent.
The organization strives to provide children with the extensive artistic education that public school funding cannot entirely cover. Being a nonprofit, Overflow Fine Arts still requires financial assistance to educate students to the greatest extent possible. All donations are greatly appreciated to continue funding the uplifting of young artists. Visit www.overflowfinearts.com.
EXPLORE THE HIDDEN GEMS IN FLORIDA’S STATE PARKS
Take
Of the ‘beaten path’ and interstate system, you can find back roads and highways that weave you through a plethora of quaint small towns, rolling hills, unique discoveries and even designated ‘scenic highways.’
You can live in Florida your whole life and not realize all that it ofers. In addition to hidden gems found by exploring outside the high-trafcked roadways, you’ll discover that the Florida Park Service is one of the largest in the country with 175 state parks, trails and historic sites spanning nearly 800,000 acres, according to the Florida Division of Recreation and Parks. In addition, Florida is home to 11 national parks and monuments.
Florida’s parks ofer a plethora of rich history, including forts, sugar plantations, lighthouses and homesteads. It also brings a unique and distinct flavor of landscape and scenery with its palmetto brush and swampy landscapes, as well as its prairies and estuaries. Two such unique places near Gainesville are the Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and

Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park.
Paynes Prairie tells a story of settlers crossing over the swampy waters to establish small communities and bring goods to new towns — now historic — such as Micanopy, celebrating 200 years in 2023. And like our friends in Wyoming, Paynes Prairie can boast a family of wild Spanish horses and a herd of bufalo that roam free in the 21,000-acre savanna.
Devil’s Millhopper, a lesser-known park in the state, is home to a 120-foot-deep sinkhole that developed centuries ago. It is believed that bodies were fed to the devil there because fossilized bones have been found in the sink. Despite its name, you can access by way of a lush, wooded area and an easily accessible 132-step boardwalk staircase, and you’ll feel as if you are transported to the mountains in one of our northern states.
These are but two small examples of what you can find on your next adventure. Take a detour of the highway and embrace the true culture that makes up this state and its citizens. For more information on Florida’s State Parks, visit www.floridastateparks.org.

Jesus Revolution Baptism Tops
4,500 People
Pastor Greg Laurie, of Harvest Christian Fellowship, held a baptism recently at Pirate’s Cove Beach, the location of the ‘Jesus Movement’ baptisms in the 1960s in Corona Del Mar, California, and more than 4,500 people showed up to participate. It is reportedly one of the largest water baptisms in history.
Author of the memoir Jesus Revolution, which the movie is based on, Laurie previously said, “In America, we’ve had four great spiritual awakenings. The Jesus Movement was the last. I feel like we’re overdue for another.”
An estimated 20,000 people came from all around the world to witness the beachside event, about which Laurie said on social media, “There was a line of folks waiting by the seawall for hours.” Laurie and his wife Cathe were baptized at Pirate’s Cove nearly 50 years ago. The cove was also used as a filming location for Laurie’s Jesus Revolution movie.

OUTREACH FREE CLINIC AND RESOURCE CENTER HOSTS THIRD ANNUAL COMEDY FUNDRAISER
Mark your calendars for a night of laughter and love at this year’s Laugh Out Loud Comedy Show.
The Outreach Free Clinic and Resource Center is hosting its third annual Laugh Out Loud Comedy Show this fall on Saturday, October 7 at 6 p.m. at the Brandon Elks Lodge.
Tickets are $75 per person, which includes admission, dinner, water, cofee, live entertainment, a silent auction and more. You can also purchase a VIP table with seating for eight for $800.
This year’s headlining comedian is Alan Schubowsky, a popular comedian who was raised in Miami and has been doing stand-up comedy for over 30 years. Schubowsky has been on Showtime Comedy Club Network, An Evening at the Improv, two Steve Martin specials and many more national shows.
The Laugh Out Loud Comedy Show has been planned by a committee of community members in order to raise funds for patient care at Outreach Free Clinic and Resource Center. The clinic works to provide free medical care for low-income, uninsured residents of Hillsborough County.
“Outreach Free Clinic and Resource Center has served this community for more

than 34 years and even through the hardest of times our doors have remained open to those in need,” said Melissa Poage, board president.
“Thanks to the support of the community at events like the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Show, the clinic is able to continue to provide essential, primary medical care and resources at no charge to the patient.”
The Outreach Free Clinic and Resource Center was established in 1987 by a group of individuals in the Brandon community to create a way for those who are uninsured to access health care. The group is made up of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, clergy, attorneys and bankers who all help prevent uninsured individuals from falling through the health care gap. This means that each member is working tirelessly to make sure that community members are not receiving inadequate health care because of socioeconomic reasons.
Enjoying a night of comedy with the community ensures that this organization can continue to help support those who need it. For information or to purchase tickets, visit https://theoutreachclinic. com/lol-comedy-show/.
ECHO (Emergency Care Help Organization) of Brandon celebrated the grand opening of its newly expanded Riverview Resource Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 3.
Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) members and the community were invited to take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception. Those in attendance were able to take tours of the new center.
The previous Riverview location operated in two separate buildings with a total of 3,000 square feet. The new location is 8,000 square feet and has ample space for food warehousing, an expanded pantry, ofces and large gathering spaces.
District 3 Commissioner Gwyn Myers was in attendance.
“It was a privilege to attend the ribbon-cutting for ECHO of Riverview. Having ECHO as a part of our community is a win-win for the county. This organization will help many people who may be experiencing hardship in their lives. In addition, residents will have an opportunity to go to a place and apply for employment opportunities,” Myers said.
ECHO executive director Eleanor Saunders said it was amazing to be able to introduce the donors, partner organizations and community partners to the Riverview
Resource Center at the ribbon-cutting. She said the best part was to be able to serve the community in a clean, bright and welcoming environment.
“The new and improved ECHO Riverview creates a seamless service delivery where job coaching, resource navigation and emergency provisions are all front and center and easily accessible. The larger layout provides constant interaction between neighbors, volunteers and staf, creating a natural environment for warm handofs,” Saunders said.
Simeon Baxter, an advocacy coordinator at the Riverview Resource Center, gave several tours to community members. He detailed the ways they meet individual needs through the diferent areas of the center. Community members are greeted at the welcome center to determine the resources available. From there, their needs will be met through a variety of services, which include emergency clothing, food, employment and crisis services.
“We try to bridge the gap between crisis and stability and that looks diferent for everyone,” Baxter said.

THE POWERFUL PARABLES OF JESUS THE LOST COIN
By Kelly Wise Valdes
Pressure washing is a delicate service that should be done by someone with experience. That’s why you should hire someone you trust to clean the exterior of your home — like Pro221 Pressure Washing, which has the experience and expertise to safely clean your driveway, pool cage, roof and more.
Pro221 ofers a wide range of services within residential and commercial exterior cleaning. Some of its services include exterior house washing, driveway cleaning, pool deck and lanai cage cleaning, fence cleaning as well as low-pressure soft wash roof cleaning. Many times, Girdwood is able to quote services based on pictures of your home or business without being onsite.
“I enjoyed the work as it is quite satisfying to take something dirty and make it look new again,” said Mark Girdwood, owner of Pro221 Pressure Washing.
Many customers have their home pressure washed at least once a year. Professional exterior cleaning can significantly increase your curb appeal and can even prolong the life of your home’s roof.

Girdwood moved to Florida in 2001 and worked in various restaurants for many years. After trying every position in the restaurant industry and working for over 20 years as a restaurant Manager, Girdwood discovered that he was tired of the long and unpredictable hours. Wanting to be home more to spend more time with his wife and children, Girdwood took a risk and started his first business in 2022.
“I knew deep down that there had to be a way I could utilize my customer service skill set and be home more with my family to be a better husband and dad,” said Girdwood.
The name Pro221 Pressure Washing was inspired by Proverbs 22:1, which says: “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
Girdwood is a one-man show whose attention to detail and commitment to his customers have earned him a loyal following, and he is proud to ofer quality cleaning to the community.
During his ministry, Jesus frequently challenged conventional wisdom, and He also encouraged His followers to radically demonstrate God’s love. He often did this through the use of parables. Jesus used these short stories to relay important instructions and lessons in ordinary language. There are more than 30 parables in the Bible, each with its own dynamic lesson.
In Luke 15:8-10, we learn about the Parable of the Lost Coin. “Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
This parable is particularly e f ective
tary value, so the loss of just one coin could be upsetting. The woman in the parable would have been willing to go to great lengths to find her one missing coin.
Jesus explains that God sees every person as invaluable, just like the lost coin. He feels sadness when anyone is lost after they have drifted away from Him and longs for them to return.
In the parable, the woman has thoroughly searched until she finds the missing coin. Then, she wants to share her joy with neighbors and friends. Jesus compares her reaction as being how God rejoices when a person repents of their sin and becomes one of His children.
He will rejoice upon each one who turns to Him.
If we let ourselves drift away from God or intentionally leave Him, rest as
