Christian Business Connections Celebrates First Shining Light Teacher Award By Amanda Boston
“In this day and age, everyone is so quick to point out when something goes wrong or a negative. We don’t take enough time to give thanks when things are good,” said Ryan Hughes in the context of teachers. Hughes is the vice president and a founding member of the Brandon Christian Business Connections (CBC), a professional networking group promoting Christian values and fellowship. The other nominees were Kimberly Oates, a VPK teacher, and Debbie Moore, a 4th-grade teacher, both also from Bell Shoals Baptist Academy. Aune is a native of Brandon who has devoted the last 22 years to teaching kindergarten at Bell Shoals Baptist Academy. She said, “I feel so humbled and honored. I love my students. We learned about what the paper does, how it does it, and what makes it different from other papers. For the tour, our class split into two smaller groups. Live Like You Mean It Peering Into The Fog To See More Clearly By Derek Maul Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in? ‘You have eyes— can’t you see? You have ears—can’t you hear?’ Don’t you remember anything at all?” – Mark 8:17-18 I enjoy walking my neighborhood in the early morning when the mist hangs onto the trees, mutes the view, blankets the sounds of the day, and keeps the temperature down. Later, when it lifts, the sunlight floods in and everything is different in an instant. When the mist is still there, there’s a dimension of vision it’s easy to miss later, when the sun blazes and the shadows become so deep. In certain ways, I see more when the colors are muted and the light is more evenly diffused. This morning’s walk made me think about clarity. Jesus said the following things repeatedly and in various ways during his ministry: 1. “Would you people open your eyes just a little bit for crying out loud!” 2. “Hello? Is anybody home? Have the 12 of you forgotten to put your listening ears on this morning?” 3. “Duh!” Well I’m not absolutely sure about
that last one, but I am one hundred percent certain Jesus would have said “duh” had the word – or it’s Aramaic equivalent – been invented two thousand years ago. Peering through the mist is a lot like regular life. It’s fun to be in church in the flood of light, to fellowship with companions on the journey, to listen to inspirational messages and enjoy beautiful music. But it’s in my day-by-day walk that I tend to stop for more intimate conversations with Jesus, and it’s in the challenge of peering closely into the fog to see more clearly that I often do. The key to clarity is not just open eyes, but sometimes new eyes. I guess that makes one more for the list – #4 from Jesus: “Come on, people! By Kelly Wise Valdes The Cathedral of San Fernando, located in San Antonio is one of the top tourist destinations in Texas as well as the oldest standing church building in the Lone Star State. From the wedding of an Alamo defender to a visit from the Pope, this cathedral is one of the oldest churches in the United States and has become the center of a popular city revitalization project. The beautiful cathedral is located in downtown San Antonio and originates back to 1731 when 55 settlers arrived in San Antonio to expand the community as a barricade against French invasion. The cornerstone of the existing structure was laid in 1738, and it has played a key role in the history of San Antonio. The dome of the original church was the point from which all mileage in Texas was originally measured. While the current structure has been expanded and renovated over the years, the walls of the original still form the sanctuary of the cathedral. The church played a leading role during the 1836 battle for which San Antonio is best known, the siege of the Alamo. It was from the tower of San Fernando Cathedral that General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered the blood red flag of no quarter raised at the beginning of the battle. The banner was a signal to the men inside the Alamo that they would not be spared. Inside the church today can be found a small coffin that holds the remains of
the men who died at the Alamo. Santa Anna had the bodies burned in giant pyres after the battle, and the ashes were collected and buried at San Fernando. A box with the remains was found beneath the sanctuary railing during a renovation project in 1936 and is now enshrined in the cathedral. The church was expanded between 1868 and 1873 and became a cathedral in 1874 when Pope Pius IX named San Antonio a diocese. It then became an archdiocese in 1926. Over the years, the cathedral has welcomed presidents, governors, senators and an array of other dignitaries. Pope John Paul II visited San Fernando on September 13, 1987, praying and speaking to students. In 2014, the cathedral became the forefront of revitalization in San Antonio. An explosion of color, light, music and historical images known as, “San Antonio The Saga” lights up the San Fernando Cathedral every evening. Created by French artist Xavier De Richemont, the 24-minute, $1 million, 7,000-square-foot projection, with custom choreographed imagery and music in surround-sound narrates the historical discovery, settlement and development of San Antonio. Every child loves to feel special on their birthday. Box of Balloons is a non-profit organization on a mission to make each birthday happy and every child celebrated. According to Samantha Benoit, leader for the Tampa Chapter, “We impact the people we serve by bringing joy into their lives by providing birthday parties to children who might not otherwise get one.“ In America, 22% of children live below the poverty level, and Benoit believes that a birthday celebration can give families the hope and joy they may be missing on their child’s special day. The focus of the organization is to ensure each child feels special and celebrated on their birthday and bring joy into the lives of them and their support system. Benoit said that it also aims to

Social workers and organizational leaders send in requests on behalf of these children. “We then reach out to local community volunteers to donate all the items/money needed to complete the birthday request in order for a child to have an awesome birthday party like many of his or her friends,” noted Benoit. Each Birthday Box is filled with a standard checklist of items, relating to the theme of the child’s choice including tableware: paper plates, napkins, cups, decorations: streamers, balloons, curling ribbon, tape, DIY decorations: themed decor, banner, etc., party favors for six children, game or activity and all supplies needed, cupcakes and a birthday gift. Multiple generations of artists and art lovers came together for Bridging The Generations, a multi-generational art exhibit held at Joanne Kingston, a resident of The Bridges and The Bridges Alex Malberg, a student in Riverview at the Art Factory at Winthrop Arts. on Tuesday, May 2. Students from the Art Factory at Winthrop Arts and residents of The Bridges collaborated on the art show. Specifically, portraits of the students created by the residents and portraits of the residents created by the students, along with other art, were on display in a lovely setting. In addition, the short film, Willy Wonka and the Art Factory, created and produced by students from the Art Factory at Winthrop Arts, was shown to the delight of young and old alike. Residents from The Bridges have been coming to the Art Factory at Winthrop Arts each month since October to create art pieces such as painted vases, portraits and mosaic pieces.
