Fourth Of July Parade Celebrates Brandon’s History Through The Decades By Kathy L. Collins
Come out with family and friends and continue or start the tradition of attending The Community Roundtable's Annual Brandon 4th of July Parade. The parade is held on the 4th of July beginning at 10 a.m. in the heart of Brandon.
The Annual Brandon 4th of July Parade presented by The Community Roundtable will be held on Tuesday, July 4. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Law Offices of Reed & Reed at the corner of Lumsden and Parsons. The route will continue north on Parsons, stop at the reviewing stand located in front of Nature's Health Foods at Parsons and Oakfield, continue west on Robertson and end in the Publix parking lot at Buckingham Place. This year marks the 60th anniversary of both The Community Roundtable and the parade itself. It also marks the 160th anniversary of John and Martha Brandon’s arrival in the area. To celebrate these milestones, this year’s parade theme is Through the Decades. Parade participants are choosing the decade of
their origin or significant anniversary to honor the theme. John Noriega of Bill’s Prescriptions is this year’s Grand Marshall. Janine Nickerson, president of The Community Roundtable said, “Noriega’s store celebrated their 60th anniversary, so asking him to be the Grand Marshall was a perfect match.” Nickerson added, “This Independence Day Parade is a tradition for many Brandon family residents. Often, the Community Roundtable is told, ‘my grandparents brought me to the parade and now I am bringing my grandchildren as part of our holiday celebration.’” Brandon’s 4th of July Parade is a great tradition that celebrates the residents, schools, organizations and
non-profits of the greater Brandon area. The parade features floats, marching bands, dancers and more. Included in the line-up this year will be the 2017 Honorary Mayor who will be announced that morning and the winner of The Community Roundtable’s Father of the Year. You can also see Walt Raysick, the winner of the Alice B. Tompkins Award (an award given to someone who epitomizes service to the community) and the winner of the Maureen Krzanowski Scholarship, Melissa Chin, a member of Riverview High School’s class of 2017. You will also see the 2017 Non-
Profit of the Year, Portamento of Hope Café. The founder, Lela Lilyquist, along with its volunteers will be celebrated for the great work they do in the community. The Parade Committee is looking for sponsors and volunteers. Students in need of community service hours can have fun and help the community by volunteering for set up and clean up. For more information on the 2017 4th of July Parade, please contact The Community Roundtable at 6614350 or email at roundtable2008@aol.com or visit www.thecommunityroundtable.org.

Meals on Wheels. On April 20, McNeil’s opening remarks at the annual Meals on Wheels volunteer appreciation luncheon were a call to action as he publicized the need to expand into the Riverview area. For 41 years, the local Meals on Wheels program has delivered hot meals to homebound persons in the Brandon, Seffner and Valrico areas. However, the Riverview area from Boyette Road and further south receives no assistance. McNeil prays that the Riverview area churches will begin participating in the program to meet the escalating needs. The local chapter operates through the combined efforts of 19 local churches. Volunteers from the participating churches prepare and deliver about 250 hot meals per day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. The volunteers are at the core of the program, and President McNeil expressed sincere appreciation for the many hearts and hands that make a difference in the community. New Primary Care Puts Patients First Picture the last time you visited the doctor’s office. You probably sat past the time of your appointment in a crowded waiting room hoping you wouldn’t catch another cold on top of what you already had. Then,
when you were finally called back, you waited some more in an uncomfortable chair while staring at a sink and some cotton swabs. You might have wondered, “Why does it have to be like this?” The truth is, it doesn’t, and Evolution Primary Care wants to reinvent the experience of going to your primary care physician. The brainchild of Dr. Matthew Dowdy, Evolution Primary Care is a different kind of experience. After over 11 years in urgent care, he sold a successful practice to realize his philosophy of putting the relationship with patients first. Upon entering, you will find you are often the only one in the waiting area, and Dr. Dowdy himself will greet you rather than seeing a series of providers. His belief is that with a “lower volume of patients there will be better care.” Follow him back to the exam room, and you’ll find it is more like a sitting area, so you can have a genuine conversation about your unique situation. His receptionist, Leighanne Bridgham, reiterates, “Dr. Dowdy wants more of a relationship

with patients and truly believes having a solid relationship with your primary care physician will lead to better health.” Behind a screen, there are still the normal tools of the doctor’s office, but after your exam, you can sit again and have time to discuss a plan of action or further your own knowledge. Evolution Primary Care offers the full range of primary care services including routine bloodwork screening as well as pap smears and well woman exams. Dr. Dowdy and his staff invite the community to attend the official ribbon cutting and grand opening with the Riverview Chamber of Commerce on June 13 at 5:30 p.m. Most importantly, Evolution Primary Care offers hours catered to meet the needs of working families with hours outside of the typical doctor’s office. Hurricane Expo Helps Residents Stay Prepared For Storm Season Ahead 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season Statistics: ___________________________________________________________ 2016 1981-2010 Average Named Storms Hurricanes Hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger)
Five named storms affecting the Unites States in 2016, included Colin, Hermine, Matthew, Bonnie and Julia. To help prepare area residents for the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Hillsborough County has scheduled for its annual Hurricane Expo. Residents can also learn more by visiting the County’s website, at www.HCFLGOV.net.
“Partners In Preparedness” has been chosen as the theme of Hillsborough County’s 2017 Hurricane Expo, a free event organized by disaster response experts from Hillsborough County, the City of Tampa, the City of Temple Terrace, the American Red Cross, and the National Weather Service, (NWS). In harmony with the Atlantic Hurricane season (June 1 - November 30) the Expo is scheduled for Saturday, June 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 250 WestShore Plaza Mall in Tampa. “This is a great event to help residents be ready, to understand their resources and meet with disaster response experts face to face,” said Hillsborough County Emergency Management Director Preston Cook. Cook emphasized that the NWS is predicting 11 named storms for the 2017 hurricane season.
This year's expo is designed to feature activities for adults and children, including education displays, touch-a-truck station, disaster preparedness booths, and a severe weather panel with local meteorology specialists to identify their evacuation zone, pick up preparedness materials, and sign up for HCFL Alert. The first 500 to visit all the stations and fill out a passport will receive a NOAA weather radio and a disaster starter kit. To assist residents, County officials promoted this year’s “Have A Plan, Know Your Plan” reminder urging residents to take the necessary steps before a hurricane hits. “The time to prepare for hurricane season is before the tropical weather moves toward us across the Atlantic Ocean,” Cook said, adding, “It only takes one to cause a disaster.” The 2016 season actually began

months ahead of the norm as Alex became the second hurricane on record to form in the Atlantic Basin during the month of January. As reported by the NWS, according to NOAA's historical hurricane tracker database, the last hurricane that formed in the Atlantic during January was in 1938. Alex is also the first hurricane to occur in the Atlantic in January since Alice in 1955. The 2016 Atlantic hurricane season was also the first above average Atlantic hurricane season since 2012, producing a total of 15 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. It was also the costliest season since 2012, and was reportedly the deadliest since at least 2008. Twelve of the 15 named storms in the Atlantic basin in 2016 affected land directly in some way and of the 12, five hit the United States. Two storms that came too close for comfort included Hurricane Matthew, which first struck Haiti as a Category 4 storm on October 4.
By Tamas Mondovics
Matthew strengthened to a rare Category 5 late on September 30, becoming the first Category 5 Atlantic Basin hurricane since Felix in early September 2007. Scraping Florida’s eastern coastline, Matthew's center came ashore near McClellanville, South Carolina, as a minimal hurricane. The second major storm to threaten the state was Hurricane Hermine in early September, which also broke Florida’s decade long streak with no hurricane landfalls. After it traveled more than 4,000 miles, Hermine pushed inland near St. Marks, Florida, as a Category 1 storm. Evacuation zones, hurricane storm surge probabilities, local flood zones are among the main “need to know” items on the list. Some hurricane preparedness tips include: -Plan to pay close attention if authorities begin announcing zone evacuations. Know where you will go and how you will get there. - Compile contact information for family members, law enforcement, local hospitals and utilities, and your property insurance agent. - Share your preparation efforts with family members, make a plan, and be sure everyone knows how it will play out if severe weather looms. - After a storm passes, listen to local officials for instructions. When they deem it's safe to return home, watch out for debris, downed power lines, and standing water. -Prepare for the unexpected. For more information, visit HurricaneExpo.com.

Don’t Let Your Investments Take a “Vacation”
Melissa L Haskins Financial Advisor
It’s summer again – time for many of us to take a break and possibly hit the open road. But even if you go on vacation, you won’t want your investments to do the same – in summertime or any other season. How can you help make sure your portfolio continues to work hard for you all year long? Here are a few suggestions: • Avoid owning too many “low growth” investments. As you know, different investments have different characteristics and can help you in different ways. For example, you typically own stocks because you want them to grow in value so that you can eventually sell them for a profit. Other investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), provide you with a regular source of income and stability of principal – two valuable contributions to your portfolio. However, investments like CDs don’t offer much in the way of growth. So if you own too many of them, you might be slowing your progress toward your important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. You can maximize the productivity of your portfolio by owning a variety of investments – domestic stocks, international stocks, corporate bonds, U.S. Treasury securities, CDs and more. How much of each investment should you own? The answer depends on a variety of factors, including your age, income, risk tolerance, family situation and specific objectives. Over time, your ideal investment mix may change, but you’ll likely need at least some growth potential at every stage of your life. • Don’t let your portfolio go “unsupervised.” Your investment portfolio can be subject to “drift” if left alone for extended time periods. In fact, without your making any
moves at all, your portfolio can move in directions that may not be favorable to you. Suppose you think your holdings should be made up of 70% stocks, but due to strong gains, your stocks now make up 80% of your portfolio. This development could lead to a risk level that feels uncomfortably high to you. That’s why you should review your portfolio at least once a year, possibly with the help of a financial professional, to check your progress and make adjustments as needed. • Don’t stop at the nearest “resting place.” Some people hope that if they can get that one “winner,” they will triumph in the investment arena. But the ability to “get rich quick” is much more of a myth than a reality. True investment success typically requires patience, persistence and the resilience to continue investing even during market downturns. In other words, investing is a long-term endeavor, and you need a portfolio that reflects this reality. The investment moves you make today may pay off for you decades from now. You need to establish your goals and keep them constantly in mind as you invest. And you will never really reach the end of your investment journey, because you’ll need to make choices and manage your portfolio throughout your retirement years. Hopefully, you will enjoy a pleasant vacation sometime this summer. But your investment portfolio shouldn't take time off. County To Begin $16.4M, 3-Year Lithia Pinecrest, Lumsden, Durant Intersection Improvements By Tamas Mondovics
The addition of a right turn lane, an additional left turn lane and an additional through lane. Add raised medians and concrete traffic separators.
Area residents recently had a chance to learn about a long-awaited project to increase traffic flow and improve safety at the intersection of Lithia Pinecrest, Lumsden, Durant and Bell Shoals Roads in Brandon. Hosted by representatives of the Hillsborough County Public Works Department, the open house public information meeting was held at the Bloomingdale High School cafeteria, 1700 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico. Scheduled to start construction this summer, the more than $16 million, multi-phased project is said to retain the current traffic pattern on all the major approaches, with a few changes. “One of the bigger changes is a right in, right out traffic pattern for Durant Rd,” said Hillsborough County Public Works project director Mary Sheets. “Lithia Pinecrest and Lumsden Roads will see extended or added raised medians and concrete traffic separators.” The project will also provide drainage improvements, pedestrian safety features, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and an upgraded traffic signal system, officials said. During construction, all lanes will be open to traffic between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m., but lane closures and overnight detours will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Cleaning Services
Access to homes and businesses will also be maintained throughout construction, which will occur within in the right-of-way or existing easements. Officials said that existing utility service lines within the project area on Lithia Pinecrest Rd and Lumsden Rd will be relocated. Commenting on the project’s length, which is expected to last 37 months, (summer of 2020) Sheets said, “To maintain traffic, we are doing the project in four sections, coordinating with local utilities.” As for the reason for delay to start the project, which was first presented to the public nearly 10 years ago, Sheets referred to the lack of funding. The project’s cost, length and end result, however, did not sit well with all in attendance, including Valrico resident Jay Bidlack, who did not shy away from voicing his disappointment, when he said, “This plan will create more problems than we have right now. They are spending $16 million dollars on some extra lanes, concrete medians and paint.” Information presented at the meeting is now available on the Lithia Pinecrest Road and Lumsden Road Intersection project webpage. The watchful eyes of red-light cameras installed at the intersection of Bloomingdale Avenue and Bell Shoals Road are monitoring motorist since January 2010. Bloomingdale Ave. recently took its place on HCSO’s most dangerous intersections in Hillsborough County list.
With the recent countywide population growth, area roadways are making headlines for being over capacity and rightfully earning the “failed road” designation. Bloomingdale Ave. in southeastern Hillsborough County is no exception. Nearly six miles long and one of the busiest roadways in the County, Bloomingdale Ave., between US 301 and Lithia Pinecrest Rd., has recently found itself on another list that did not make things any better. The list was released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office naming the top intersections for accidents for just a one month period; the month of April. Tampa Theatre Presents Summer Movie Classics In Historic Cinema Setting
By Kathy L. Collins
This year, the Tampa Theatre’s beloved Summer Classics Movie Series features two sing-alongs, a silent film with live music, modern classics and post-show talks with community experts. “For more than 25 years, the community has flocked to Tampa Theatre on hot Sunday afternoons to enjoy Summer Classics as they were meant to be seen on the big screen, surrounded by friends, with a bag of fresh popcorn and a cold drink in hand,” said Jill Witecki of the Tampa Theatre. This summer, treat yourself to a good film at a historic movie palace. First up, the Tampa Theatre will offer two showings on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4 of the classic tale, Beauty and the Beast. While this is a “tale as old as time,” it is the score that everyone remembers so Tampa Theatre is offering these showings as a sing-along. You can follow the lyrics on the screen and belt out the songs along with everyone else. Next, on Sunday, June 11 come see Debbie Reynold, Donald O’Connor, Jean Hagen and the immortal Gene Kelly in the 1952 classic, Singin’ In The Rain. See this
grand classic as it was meant to be seen: on the big screen. Come see the Coen Brothers’ Raising Arizona on Sunday, June 18. Nicholas Cage is a bumbling criminal who wants to go straight and start a family with his doting wife played by Holly Hunter. Next, on Sunday, June 25, come see Dustin Hoffman in the 1967 film, The Graduate. Hoffman plays a college grad in the delicate shift from adolescence to adulthood. He is torn between his feelings for his girlfriend’s mother (played by Anne Bancroft as the now infamous Mrs. Robinson) and his fear of the future. There will be Q&A sessions with USF film Professor, Harriet Deer, immediately following Singin’ In The Rain, Raising Arizona and The Graduate. All films are shown at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for Tampa Theatre members. Get tickets at the Tampa Theatre Box Office located at 711 N. Franklin St. in downtown Tampa or online at www.tampatheatre.org. This is the first of a three-part series.

You can also order a copy, which will be sent to you, from the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Visit watermatters.org and view free publications under Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM to order your personal copy. This Guide is intended for homeowners who want to design their own FloridaFriendly Landscapes. The beauty and functionality of a Florida-Friendly Landscape depends on a mix of trees, plants and turfgrass chosen for their specific location and maintained according to the University of Florida/IFAS recommendations. Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM principles encourage the use of both native and non-native species of plants. Invasive exotics should be removed, where possible, and never planted. The Guide provides a number of landscape design scenarios, including front entry, along walls, sidewalks and fences, under windows and trees, etc. Information is included on how to convert your yard to a Florida-Friendly Landscape, ecological considerations, five common gardening mistakes and the Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM Plant List of trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers, grasses, perennials, annuals and turfgrass. Plant information covers the Florida Region and

It is easy to use, understand and makes finding the right plant for the right place a simple process. This Guide to Plant Selection and Landscape Design is intended as a companion to The Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Handbook which is available for viewing at fyn.ifas.ufl.edu/materials/FYN_Handbo ok_2015_web.pdf. Hillsborough Aims To Feed More Hungry Kids This Summer
Hunger doesn’t take the summer off. Neither do efforts to get food to the children who need it. Hillsborough County is once again participating in the Summer Food Service Program, which provides free nutritious lunches and afternoon snacks to children at more than 50 sites throughout the county. In an effort to make sure no child goes without a meal, this year’s program has been lengthened by eight days, from Tuesday, May 30 to Friday, August 4. The Summer Food Service Program will provide a balanced meal during summer vacation when school meals are not available. The meals and snacks will be offered at local parks and other community locations to children under 18. Applications are not required. Nearby approved sites can be found online, or for more information, email summerfoodprogram@HCFLGov.n et or call 276-8625. Also new this year: More "grab and go'' meals that are ready to eat but also healthy.

Multiple generations of artists and art lovers came together for Bridging The Generations, a multi-generational art exhibit held at Joanne Kingston, a resident of The Bridges and The Bridges Alex Malberg, a student in Riverview at the Art Factory at Winthrop Arts. on Tuesday, May 2. Students from the Art Factory at Winthrop Arts and residents of The Bridges collaborated on the art show. Specifically, portraits of the students created by the residents and portraits of the residents created by the students, along with other art, were on display in a lovely setting. In addition, the short film, Willy Wonka and the Art Factory, created and produced by students from the Art Factory at Winthrop Arts, was shown to the delight of young and old alike. Residents from The Bridges have been coming to the Art Factory at Winthrop Arts each month since October to create art pieces such as painted vases, portraits and mosaic pieces. Janet Noah, Community Relations Liason for The Bridges said, "The Bridges has always valued residents' artistic expression. Our recent collaboration with the Art Factory is providing our residents with a wide array of art projects designed to encourage imagination, creativity and
most of all, pure enjoyment."
One of the residents who participated in the portrait exhibit, Carol Field said, "I loved the challenge of doing the portrait of the girl I chose. It was such an enjoyable experience to sketch a portrait of a student and then have a portrait of me sketched by a different student. In addition, everyone was given the choice of which medium they wished to use for the
portraits." "It was a wonderfully creative event and a great opportunity for the students. They got to express their creativity through the portraits and share their film with the community," said Bryant Martinez, Winthrop Town Artist. All those who attended enjoyed not only the art created by generations young and old, but also the wonderful culinary delights prepared by The Bridges' chef. The room itself was an artistic masterpiece as it was whimsically decorated with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory scenes. For information, visit bridgesretirement.com or call 413-8900. Bloomingdale, East Bay District Title Game Ends In Extra Point Shootout
East Bay Indians running back, Shawnari Lynch has nowhere to run, thanks to the Bloomingdale Lady Bulls solid defense, during this year’s girl’s flag football district championship game.
After three consecutive district titles, and a 13-14 loss to local rival East Bay, the Bloomingdale Girls Flag Football team led by program head coach Michael Lankford had to settle for second place, which has affectively halted the girl's chance to advance to this year’s regionals in hopes of a state appearance. The last time the two teams met was in 2015, when the much stronger Bulls had the upper hand and defeated the Indians 27-6 to win their second district tile in a row. The Lady Bull’s winning streak continued in 2016 with a powerful 207 victory over the Plant City Raiders to claim the 2A District 6 championship victory; the program’s third in as many years. This season, however, was undoubtedly and rightfully East Bay’s’ as the well-balanced and talented team led by head coach Michael Cooper reclaimed the coveted trophy with a perfect 7-0 district record. Coming down to a final shootout, the game hosted by East Bay could have gone either way and was as good and as exciting as high school sports can get. When it was over, East Bay did not only play its ninth district championship game, but won its sixth district
title, and posted its 100th win, in 11 years. Only two other coaches can claim 100 wins in the county: Josh Saunders of Robinson 134, Matt Hernandez of Alonso 106. “I have enjoyed coaching many talented players in the past and we had great teams, but as I said at the beginning of the season, this is by far the best team that we have ever had,” Cooper said. “They deserve it. They have worked hard and kept the right attitude all for the love of the game. I am proud of what my players have achieved for me and themselves because they believe in my direction, which is, "Do the best, be the best you can be as a daughter, sister, student, teammate." I love my players for what they've accomplished.” The Indians—with nothing to lose—advanced to and won the first round of regionals but lost the second round 13-14 to Plant. This was the third time East Bay has reached the second round of regionals in school history. As for the Lady Bulls under Lankford’s direction, now must wait until next year for a rematch. In a wonderful effort to shine a light on Autism Awareness with staff and student body, Bell Shoals Baptist Academy (BSBA) partnered with special needs mom, Laura Fletcher, during a recent chapel service. Mother of Nicholas Fletcher, a 7-year-old Autistic BSBA student, Fletcher was given the opportunity to speak about what Autism is and how it may affect some children within their school community. A highlight of the morning came from a heartfelt moment when Nicholas addressed his friends and school directly, telling them "I am Autistic" and it simply means “I do things differently.” Overall, the event brought education and emotion to a topic that touches and affects 1 in 68 children nationwide.

The Village Players Present The Three Musketeers At McCabe Theatre This June
You will be in awe as you watch actors from the Village Players perform live sword fights and other combat scenes in their presentation of The Three Musketeers this June at the Historic James McCabe Theatre in Valrico.
The Village Players will present The Three Musketeers at the historic James McCabe Theatre in Valrico beginning with the traditional Dinner Theatre Opening Night on Friday, June 9. Cost to attend is $35 per person. All funds raised at the Opening Night are earmarked for renovations of the historic building. The James McCabe Theatre is located at 506 5th St. in Valrico. The Three Musketeers will be performed for three weeks in June. Regular shows will be held on Friday, June 16 and 23; Saturday, June 10, 17 and 24. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with the curtain call at 8 p.m. There will be two Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. on June 11 and 18. Tickets for the regular shows are $18 and $15 for seniors, students and military with ID. Groups of 10 or more are also $15 per person, but these seats must be reserved in advance. The Village Players’ adaptation is based on the timeless swashbuckler tale by Alexandre Dumas. It is a tale of heroism, treachery, close escapes and
above all, honor. The story is set in 1625 and features d’Artagnan and his sister, Sabine, the quintessential tomboy, who are on their way to Paris to drop off Sabine at a convent. As soon as they reach Paris, they encounter the greatest heroes of the day: Athos, Porthos and Aramis, the famous musketeers. They join forces to defend the honor of the Queen of France and face treachery and danger. Gail Pierce, a producer for the Village Players said, “This show, which is three months in the making, includes live fencing, action
and adventure.” Steven Bucko, director of The Three Musketeers said, “The Three Musketeers is an amazing story. That is why it is popular hundreds of years after it was written.” Bucko added, “I love this show for a bunch of reasons. The first and most fun is the combat. We have over 10 sword fights and several more fights with fists, daggers and wine bottles. We are going to give the audience a combat showcase that is rare for any community theatre. The Three Musketeers is an exciting adventure and we want our audience to feel that excitement the entire time they are watching.” For more information on the Village Players and to get tickets to The Three Musketeers, please call 480-3147 or visit www.thevillageplayersvalrico.com.

Outdoor Adventure And Activities Await You And Dad This Father’s Day Fishing poles and Nike’s may be the go-to dad present each Father’s Day, but this June 18, take a trip and surprise dad with hands-on entertainment just around the corner. Since Father’s Day is on a Sunday, making a lazy-day drive to Tampa, Plant City or even Ruskin could be the perfect day trip for your family, and of course your dad. Prep with the pros - If you and your dad are the outdoorsy types, you can get all your gear and skills organized at Bass Pro Shops Tampa location. Believe it or not the supply of fishing poles, camping gear and adventure garments can either be a quick stop or an all-day escapade. “When I went on my hiking trip to California I had no idea about like anything,” said Nick Lawson, a local to the Brandon area. “I went into Bass Pro like just to figure out what I needed and I ended up being so well set in the “Cali” woods.” With a seafood restaurant called Islamorada Fish Company Restaurant serving local marina snacks, two remarkable large aquariums and a huge selection of interesting tools to enjoy the outdoors, you may find a new addiction. For information on prices and locations visit http://www.basspro.com/
Leave the Ground - For the more adventurous souls, Jump Florida Skydiving and iFLY are two picks that require more than a little courage. Jump Florida is a skydiving service in Plant City that allows customers to launch out of a plane at 120 miles per hour. The training course before the final fall is only about one hour, so believe it or not this is an activity that can be done in only a margin of your day. When you’re ready to hurdle out of a plane, book an appointment and give dad the thrill of his life. “I’m a big guy so I was nervous that it wouldn’t work, you know?” said Zackary James, who had previously skydived, “Honestly though it was so fun and petrifying in a good way.” If skydiving at 14,000 feet isn’t exactly your thing, iFLY offers the same excitement, but in a controlled environment. iFLY is one of the few places that offers indoor skydiving, an experience that offers the same feeling and dynamics of jumping from a plane,

Every Child Deserves A Birthday Party: Box Of Balloons Delivers Staff Report
Box of Balloons, Tampa Chapter is currently seeking volunteers, donors and community leaders and social workers to serve.
Every child loves to feel special on their birthday. Box of Balloons is a non-profit organization on a mission to make each birthday happy and every child celebrated. According to Samantha Benoit, leader for the Tampa Chapter, “We impact the people we serve by bringing joy into their lives by providing birthday parties to children who might not otherwise get one.“ In America, 22% of children live below the poverty level, and Benoit believes that a birthday celebration can give families the hope and joy they may be missing on their child’s special day. The focus of the organization is to ensure each child feels special and celebrated on their birthday and bring joy into the lives of them and their support system. Benoit said that it also aims to
empower parents and caregivers by delivering a birthday box to them with all the necessities for a fantastic party. Box of Balloons is a registered 501(c)(3) organization that reaches out to local school social workers, community leaders and organizations to identify children in need. Social workers and organizational leaders send in requests on behalf of these children. “We then reach out to local community volunteers to donate all the items/money needed to complete the birthday request in order for a child to have an awesome birthday party like many of his or her friends,” noted Benoit. Each Birthday Box is filled with a standard checklist of items, relating to the theme of the child’s choice including tableware: paper plates, napkins, cups, decorations: streamers, balloons, curling ribbon, tape, DIY decorations: themed decor, banner, etc., party favors for six children, game or activity and all supplies needed, cupcakes and a birthday gift. Each box costs roughly $100 to fill. There are several ways to get involved. You can pledge your Birthday, Build-A-Box, volunteer for a chapter, start a chapter, or simply donate. Visit www.boxofballoons.org. To donate items locally, call 802-8331.

Sea Tow Tampa Bay Offers 24/7 Peace Of Mind Boat Towing Service
By Nick Nahas
Sea Tow Tampa Bay assisting a 50-foot sport fish that ran aground.
Sea Tow Tampa Bay has had smooth sailing under new owners Raul and Cile Moreno, who bought the franchise two years ago. Cile has had prior experience owning and running a company, with a background in sales and marketing. With her son and Sea Tow general manager, Captain Erich Jaeger’s previous knowledge of operating boating vessels, the company is off to a great start. The company owns four towboats that are scattered throughout Tampa Bay for optimum coverage. The team consists of seven full-time captains that are available 24/7 in case of an emergency on the water. A wide variety of services are offered for a yearly membership to the company, including boater education classes and automated radio checks, as well as unlimited boat tows, battery jumps, and up to 20 gallons of gas delivery.
Sea Tow Tampa Bay offers 24/7 boat towing.
They even have a Sea Tow app that can be used for non-emergency assistance and access to tides and weather information. “We are ready to come out 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, no matter what, to come and get you,” Jaeger said. “When you have Sea Tow, we are going to get you home no matter what the case.” May is National Boating Safety Month, giving Sea Tow Tampa Bay the perfect opportunity to help spread the word about boater safety throughout the bay. They have done their due diligence, providing boaters with every tool possible for a safe boating experience. In 2007, the Sea Tow Foundation, a grant program that provides free lifejackets to passengers, was established to promote boating safety. The company also created the Designated Skipper Program, attempting to spread awareness of

the dangers of drinking and boating. “You should not be operating a vessel while impaired,” Jaeger said. “Alcohol is involved in almost every fatality on the water.” With the varied hours and high levels of stress that it takes to maintain an operation that is constantly running, it helps that the business is family-run and operated, because

everybody involved understands the demands of the job. “You never know when the job is coming, you just know that the job’s coming,” Jaeger said. Jaeger said the family hopes that with the success of Sea Tow Tampa Bay they can purchase another Sea Tow franchise in the future. For information, visit their website at seatow.com/local/tampabay/.
