With all that is going on in the world, there has been a resurgent of curiosity about one species in particular: bats. These incredible and important animals play a vital role in our ecosystem and worldwide. Bats can be found on six continents and they are widely spread throughout the state of Florida. We are home to 13 permanent resident species of bats with seven other occasional or accidental species that have been recorded in the state. Bats are typically nonaggressive and less than 1 percent have been found to carry rabies. The only true flying mammal, bats are not rodents and have forelimbs that have been adapted as wings, allowing them to fly. Evening bats are one of the most common species to observe in the Tampa Bay area. They are easily identified by their dark brown fur that is often accented with a reddish or copper tint. They have short, dark ears and a black muzzle resembling that of a dog. On average, they are about 2-3 inches in length with a wingspan around 11 inches. Bats are insectivores, which means that their diet consists almost entirely of bugs. Colonies of bats can consume thousands of mosquitos every night. The evening bat prefers moths,

Bloomingdale/FishHawk Edition

beetles and mosquitos. The evening bat is a colonial species and can roost in groups of up to 80 bats per colony. Their preferred places to roost are in caves, under bridges, within dead trees, in abandoned buildings and in man-made structures. Often, they will choose to roost in the attics of residential homes. Bats are protected year-round in the state of Florida and it is illegal to harm or kill them. Because they only give birth once a year, their maternity season, which falls between April 15- August 15, also allots them further protections. During this time, bats may not be excluded without a permit. Bats not only provide natural pest control services, they are also important pollinators. The conservation of bats is imperative for the survival of their species. Threats such as habitat loss and the spread of white-nose syndrome (a fungal infection) are the greatest risks that these animals face. We can protect bats by never disrupting or handling wildlife, installing bat houses and preserving their natural environments. If you have further bat questions, the Southwest Regional FWC can be reached at 863-648-3200. Quality bat houses can be found at habitatforbats.org.

Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy are two of the most over-diagnosed conditions for anyone with foot or ankle pain. If you’re experiencing pain on the underside of your foot or on the back of your ankle, just above your heel, it’s likely that you’ve irritated the fascia or tendon through over-use or improper biomechanics. It often goes mis-treated and becomes a chronic complaint. Some of the most effective treatments are rehab, strengthening the muscles of the foot, and therapy. It is important to have your pain evaluated by a professional who understands the rehab necessary to correct it. It is not something that you want to attempt to self-diagnose or experiment with self-prescribed treatments such as kinesiotape and orthopedic braces that you are able to purchase over-the-counter. Long-term bracing can have detrimental effects on our biomechanics and can allow our muscles and surrounding tissues to get weak and become dependent on the brace for support, causing more issues. However, these tools can be effective under the care of a medical professional. WHAT IT ISN’T Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon pain can be frustrating to deal with due to its chronic nature and unresponsiveness to most other treatments. That doesn’t mean that you must live with the pain forever or even that it would take dozens of visits to correct. No matter how chronic the complaint, there is usually still improvement to be made, if not full resolution, however, the sooner you get a connective tissue problem like these evaluated and treated, the better the prognosis and the faster the recovery. WHAT IT IS Plantar fasciitis and Achilles pain are often mechanical in nature, meaning that it’s a result of how we move and use our body. Left alone to just “rest” or restricted to a splint or soft cast, the tendon and tissue will not be remodeled, will not heal on its own, and the pain will persist for long after the initial injury or incident. This is why seeking appropriate treatment is so important. At Motion ChiroTherapy, we tailor your rehab to restore full and pain-free ranges of motion and then strengthen the surrounding muscles and tissues to better tolerate load and stress.

Bloomingdale/FishHawk Edition

By Brian Bokor, Founder www.facebook.com/bokorscorner

Welcome to your October update of new developments and openings in the Greater Brandon and Riverview areas. Please check the respective Facebook pages for the most recent information. In Brandon, The Dog Patch at 122 Linsley Ave., located south of SR 60 and between Kings Ave. and Parsons Ave., will be opening this month offering grooming, daycare, boarding and ‘wash-n-go’ for your dogs and cats with active duty/veteran discounts available. The Bloomingdale area welcomes two new destinations with Heights Meat Market, featuring premium meats and seafood, which opened last week on the southeast corner of Bloomingdale Ave. and Bell Shoals Rd., and Gasparilla’s Pizzeria & Growlers, scheduled to open before the months-end in the storefront previously occupied by Bella Pizza in Plaza Bella, directly across Bloomingdale Ave. to the north. West on Bloomingdale, Lacey and Ty Mathis, current owners/operators of The Stein & Vine, have been putting the finishing touches on their new concept, The Bin & Board, in the Kings Row Shopping Center at the southwest corner of Bloomingdale Ave. and Kings Ave. With both establishments in the same plaza, the couple is looking to give its growing

clientele several dining options within a stone’s throw. The menu will be geared toward wines, cheeses and charcuterie, with its opening expected before the holiday season. Crossing into Riverview, Katana Japanese Express opened in September in the Bloomingdale Hills shopping center on the southwest corner of Bloomingdale Ave. and Providence Rd. Those familiar with Brandon’s Sushi Ushi on SR 60 may see familiar faces as the owners are related and look forward to bringing their brand of sushi to the Riverview area. Staying in the area, Brandon Burgers opened its second location late August in Winthrop Town Center. South on Gibsonton Dr., McAlister’s Deli, specializing in deli sandwiches, salads and soups, posted a ‘coming soon’ sign near the new Cracker Barrel that opened southwest of the I-75 interchange. Additionally, AMC recently purchased the Riverview 14 GDX theater and has reopened it under new management. Finally, the clearing of 33 acres of land southeast of the U.S. 301/Riverview Dr. intersection will be home to Sentosa Riverview Apartments, a 368-unit luxury apartment complex combined with several on-site commercial applications in one mixed-use setting.

From The Tee Box With Jason Blanchard That dreaded bunker shot. How many times have you felt that pit in your stomach when you hit a shot and realize the ball has just landed in a bunker? Webster’s definition of a bunker is: “a bin or compartment for storage.” However, even after you have taken that third swing out of the bunker, it definitely feels like your ball is stuck in permanent storage and can never get out. There are certain areas of golf that require more practice than others, the short game being one of them. Putting, chipping and bunker play all require a lot of feel, and that can only be gained through repetition. There are a few different ways to play a bunker shot. All try to have the same end result: getting it out of the sand. The rule of thumb when playing a greenside bunker shot is to imagine your ball is sitting in the middle of a dollar bill and when you swing you want to enter the sand at the beginning of the bill and exit at the end.

Greenside bunker shots should be played with a lofted club of 50 degrees or more. However, when you find yourself in a fairway bunker, you want to try and pick the ball off the sand, making sure you have solid contact with the ball before hitting the sand. Each week on the PGA tour, you see players knock bunker shots 2 feet from the flag similar to how you or I would hit a chip shot. This skill can only come from practice. Just like a test, if you study, you have a better chance of not failing; if you spend time in the practice bunker, you have a better chance of not ruining your round. Don’t allow that ‘compartment’ in the ground to get the best of you. For questions or input, please email me at golfguyosprey@gmail.com. Want An Extra Boost to Your Morning Coffee? Caffeine is the world’s most famous and commonly consumed psychoactive drug. Who doesn’t ingest even a little from time to time? CBD oil is rapidly gaining ground on coffee in terms of popularity and so it only makes sense that people would start combining the two. As it turns out, the two substances go very well together!

CBD oil is also a partial agonist of the A2a receptor; so the theory goes that by combining caffeine and CBD, adenosine is blocked across the board, resulting in not only more stimulation, but reduced anxiety (due to CBD’s effects on other neurotransmitters systems).

When adenosine binds to the A2a receptor, the result is what is commonly known as the ‘rest and digest’ effect, which increases clarity and alertness.

Considering this information, again, it is best to be mindful and cautious when mixing caffeine and CBD.

On the bright side, CBD oil and caffeine together will Caffeine is molecularly very similar cause the boost from your to adenosine, a compound produced in our bodies that activates the A2a receptor. morning cup of coffee to last all day instead of just a few Caffeine binds to the A2a receptors, inhibiting the re uptake of adenosine. hours.

If I Could Only Have Two Shrubs In My Landscape...

Last month, I shared information on firebush, also known as scarlet bush and Hamelia patens. This month, the second shrub that is a musthave in my landscape is beautyberry, also called Callicarpa americana. It prefers part sun/part shade and does well in full shade. However, I have some that are in nearly full sun and perform quite well. This native plant can reach a height and spread of 6-7 feet. Beautyberry can be used as a border plant, in mass planting, naturalized or in large containers. Allow for sufficient space. It prefers well-drained soil moisture, has high

drought tolerance and low to no salt tolerance. Beautyberry is deciduous and produces purple/light purple flowers from spring through fall that provide small fruits for wildlife. There is a beautyberry variety, Callicarpus americana var. lactea, that produces white flowers and fruits which are also quite attractive in the landscape. Propagation is from seeds or cuttings. For more information, see https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fp090. If site conditions are right, firebush and beautyberry shrubs are two Florida native must-haves. They are strikingly beautiful, and maintenance is simple. If you are like me and you cannot stop at two, check out the University of Florida’s website to learn more about Florida natives at https://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/lawnand-garden/native-plants/. Visit our calendar of events for gardening workshops and other educational opportunities at https://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/hillsborough/up coming-events/. Local Theaters Make Movie-Watching Safe & Comfortable As They Reopen

By Taylor Wells

As movie theaters start to reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the question is: how is our safety ensured if we go to the movies? Xscape Theatres Riverview 14, Plant City Premiere LUX Ciné 8 and Pizza Pub and AMC Theatre’s Regency 20 and Riverview 14 GDX locations are well-prepared. Xscape Theatres Riverview 14 recently reopened with new and improved protocols so that your time in the theater is the best it can be, including reduced capacity in auditoriums; staggered showtimes to reduce overcrowding and allow time to clean and sanitize; social distancing; frequent cleaning procedures for commonly touched areas and daily inspections of restrooms and auditoriums; and more. Regarding concessions, food and drinks are still available, but common areas will be routinely disinfected, concession stands and kitchens will be sanitized every 30 minutes, every other register will be closed to maintain social distancing, free refills are unavailable for now, self-service condiment areas are closed and items like lids, straws, napkins and condiments are available by request. Other policies for everyone include daily health screenings, required personal protection equipment and handwashing. Xscape staff will be given extensive training and daily updates to maintain and reiterate its new cleanliness and safety policies, and online ticketing and self-service ticketing kiosks are available. Xscape’s other features and amenities include its Xtreme Xscape auditori-

ums, reserved seating, listening devices available, beer and wine, rewards program, theater rental and more. For Xtreme Xscape and 3D showings, tickets cost an extra $2.30. The theater also has Discount Tuesdays and Senior Discount Wednesdays, both being all-day tickets for $7.37. Plant City Premiere LUX Ciné 8 has implemented safety measures for staff and guests, like employees washing their hands and changing gloves frequently, constant cleaning and disinfecting of highcontact surfaces, social distancing, requiring everyone to wear masks at all times (aside from when snacking during a movie), staying home for any signs of illness and many others. As for snacking, there are limited menu items at this time, self-serve refill stations and free refills are temporarily suspended, Premiere Team members will fill your soda and ICEE cups for you and other new policies have been put into place, all to ensure safe food-handling. For reserved seating, there is a 50 percent occupancy rule so that everyone in an auditorium has an empty seat on

both sides, though friends and family can sit together. For non-reserved seating, every other row in an auditorium will be blocked off and guests are asked to space themselves out accordingly for everyone’s well-being. Along with its enhanced policies, Plant City Premiere LUX Ciné 8 provides D-BOX and IMAX for more immersive experiences and offers ticket deals for lower prices, such as: Special Opening Rate - All tickets for returning movies are only $5.43. Special Prices (new movies) - Early Bird (before 12 p.m. daily) for $6.52, Terrific Tuesday (not valid on holidays and special premieres) for $5.43 and Senior Monday (60+, no holidays) for $5.43. General Admission (new movies) Adults (12+, after 6 p.m., MondayThursday) for $10.05, Weekend Adults (12+, after 6 p.m., Friday-Sunday) for $10.32, Children (any child that takes a seat—not valid for R-rated films) for $7.61 and Seniors (60+) for $7.61 matinees (all shows before 6 p.m.). Digital 3D features cost an additional $2.50 per ticket. Premiere LUX Ciné 8

recommends that guests purchase tickets online in advance, and for further convenience it reduced the online fees to make this easier and more affordable. AMC Regency 20 and AMC Riverview 14 GDX have a new set of extensive cleaning policies called AMC Safe & Clean™ to reduce contact and keep people safe, which go along well with their other great features and amenities. These policies include: masks required for all guests and staff (except when enjoying food and drinks in the auditorium, but they must be worn when finished), social distancing standards, a simplified menu, sanitizer and wipe dispensers available in the theaters, refills being temporarily unavailable, frequent handwashing for the staff, daily temperature readings for staff, enhanced cleaning procedures developed with Clorox® and more. All AMC, AMC DINE-IN™ and AMC CLASSIC® auditoriums will also have 40 percent capacity or less, with enough space between each row for proper social distancing. It also has ‘Welcome Back’ offers, such as 30 percent off tickets every day before 5 p.m. AMC Theatres encourages guests to order tickets online ahead of time on its website or app to help reduce physical contact. For more information about these theaters and their ticket prices, offers and safety policies, visit xscapetheatres.com, www.pccmovies.com and www.amctheatres.com.

Clip & Save: Six Ballot Amendments And What They Mean ToByVoters Kathy Collins

This year, as voters head to the polls or send their ballots via U.S. mail or drop-off boxes provided by the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections, they will be asked to approve or reject six Florida constitutional amendments. Four of the amendments, numbers one through four, are citizen initiatives, and two, numbers five and six, were referred by the Florida Legislature. The citizen initiatives are subject to a financial impact review. To be approved, a constitutional amendment must receive 60 percent of the vote. Voters are urged to carefully review the complete ballot before casting their vote. Here is a summary of the proposed amendments:

Amendment 1Citizenship Requirement to Vote in Florida Elections

The amendment would add language stating that only United States citizens who are 18 years old, are permanent residents of Florida and are registered to vote may do so.

Amendment 3Establishes an Open Primary System for State Offices Only

Establishes an Open Primary System for State Offices Only This allows all voters to vote in primary elections regardless of party affiliation. The two candidates who receive the most votes would move on to the general election. The change would not affect federal elections. Currently, Florida is a closed primary state, which means that voters must register as a Democrat or Republican to vote in state primaries.

Amendment 2- Raising Florida’s Minimum Wage

The State’s minimum wage would be raised to $15 per hour by the year 2026. Beginning on September 30, 2021, the minimum wage would increase to $10 per hour. Then, it would increase by $1 per year until it reaches the goal of $15 per hour. Thereafter, future minimum wage increases would be adjusted annually for inflation.

Amendment 4Voter Approval of Constitutional Amendments

This would require that any amendments that receive 60 percent of the vote to be placed on the ballot of the next general

election and again receive 60 percent of the vote in order for it to take effect.

Amendment 5Limitation on Homestead Assessments

This would increase the amount of time from two years to three years in which you may transfer Save Our Homes benefits to a new homestead.

Amendment 6- Ad Valorem Tax Discount for Spouses of Certain Deceased Veterans Who Had Permanent, CombatRelated Disabilities

This would allow a homestead property tax discount to be transferred to the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran. For more information and the full text of the amendments, please visit http://www.dos.myflorida.com/elections/.

Be An Informed Voter, Know Where And How To Vote So That Every Vote Counts Voting is a right and not a privilege. In order to exercise this right, every voter in Hillsborough County must be informed and must know where to vote and how to do it. In Hillsborough County, there are three ways to exercise your right to vote: Vote By Mail, Early Voting and Election Day Voting. In order to vote in the general election, set for Tuesday, November 3, you must be registered by Monday, October 5. When you register, you are asked to select a party. The parties are Republican, Democrat or No Party Affiliation. You can also register as a member of a minor political party such as the Green Party of Florida. In a general election, your ballot, or those you vote for, is based upon where you reside. In other words, you vote for officials who represent your area. This year, everyone votes for the office of the president. There are no statewide elections this year as neither U.S. senator who represents Florida is up for election. There are countywide elections, including the office of the Hillsborough County state attorney. You can view a sample ballots for the general election by visiting www.votehillsborough.org. VOTE BY MAIL Vote By Mail is the most convenient method. You do not need an

excuse to choose this option. If you request this method, you will receive your ballot in the mail as early as Thursday, September 24. The deadline to request your Vote By Mail ballot is Saturday, October 24. Using this method allows you to take your time making your voting decision. The Vote By Mail ballot must be received by the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections Office by 7 p.m. on Election Day. You can mail it or drop it off in person at one of their offices or at an Early Voting site. In order to avoid any delays that may be experienced with the mail and to make voting as easy as possible, the supervisor of elections offers curbside drop-off this year. You must be mindful of the deadlines in order to use this method. You can request your Vote By Mail ballot and track its delivery

by visiting www.votehillsborough.org. “During the primary election, we had curbside Vote By Mail drop-off at each of our 24 Early Voting sites and it was very popular. We expect even more voters to choose this convenient way of voting in the general election. Voters really liked being

able to get their ballots at home and drop them off in person without leaving their car,” said Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer. “The office plans to have dropoff tents at its four offices seven days a week, starting Friday, September 25, and will expand to the 24 drop-off sites during Early Voting, from Monday, October 19 through Sunday, November 1,” added Latimer. EARLY VOTING Early Voting will take place from Monday, October 19 through

Sunday, November 1 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Early Voting is just like Election Day Voting. You must bring one or two forms of identification with your photo and signature on it. Acceptable forms of identification include a Florida driver’s license, state-issued identification, U.S. passport, student ID, public assistance ID and more. During Early Voting, you can go to any of the 24 sites designated as an Early Voting site. Conversely, on Election Day, you must vote at the precinct designated on your voter registration. ELECTION DAY VOTING Polling places or precincts, noted on your voter registration card, are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. This year, the general election day is Tuesday, November 3. You can bring your sample ballot with you and use it while you vote. Latimer said, “We got a lot of positive feedback from our voters and poll workers on the health and safety of in-person voting. Voters appreciated the way we set up our polling places so that everyone could be socially distanced, our poll workers were wearing masks and keeping things clean and we were happy to see that nearly all of our voters wore masks too.” Whichever method you choose, remember that your vote counts.
