Wheels For All Starts A New Chapter In Florida: Re-‘Cycling’ To Help The Local Communities
By Jasmine Haroun
A new Wheels for All chapter started in the Riverview area in late August. Wheels for All (WFA) is a student-led nonprofit organization that repairs donated bikes and scooters and provides them to those in need. The organization’s goal is to promote environmental sustainability, healthier lifestyles, education and transportation to as many people as possible. In the near future, they plan to do fundraisers with local businesses, as well as bike-a-thons and other projects to help promote education and community welfare. WFA was created in Illinois by Aaryan Menon for the purpose of providing bikes to the in need. During midAugust, Menon collaborated with Ikshita Achanta, a student at Newsome High School, who is now Florida’s WFA chapter leader. “This organization is focused on solving a problem that is often overlooked. The importance of transportation
is taken for granted even though so many people do not have access to it and face many challenges to get from one place to another,” said Achanta. There are currently three WFA chapters across the country located in Illinois, Florida and New Jersey, and WFA plans to expand into other states. “I was very passionate about the idea and motivated to better the community. The cause was distinct and I personally felt that it would positively impact the community if a chapter was started in Florida. I was able to get a team of eager, diligent people willing to support the cause,” said Achanta. Currently, there are nine members working in the WFA Florida chapter. As of now, it is not looking for any volunteers; however, it may need some for future events. WFA always accepts monetary and bike donations to help its cause. Summer To Fall Transition…It’s Time For Redfish
Karla Marie Carolan, J.D.
As always, we are here for any legal support you may need and wish everyone good health.
We all love this time of year (minus these crazy winds, of course) when the temperatures in the air and in the water starts to drop. The water temperature has dropped around 10 degrees over the last three weeks. This changes the fishing up a bit. We’ll start fishing more on the flats, along the mangroves and testing out the rivers. It’s definitely time to start seeking out redfish. Redfish are one of the best fighting fish in Tampa Bay. They will pull your line and test your reel’s drag. They are a main target to knock off the bucket list, and this is one of the best times of year to target them as they are here in large schools. On high tides, fish are in the mangroves and edges on the cuts. As the tide moves out, they move out with it 50-100 yards off the shoreline. Redfish readily take live bait, including whitebait, threadfins, pinfish and shrimp. Sometimes I’ll trim the tail of the live bait to slow the bait down a bit. To me, redfish fishing is all about patience. Start by fishing where you see them or have known them to be located. Approach with stealth and refrain from making any noise that would reverberate
in the water. Chum the water with live bait or chum. Cast to the area you chummed and wait. Sometimes ‘rod holder’ is the best fisherman in the boat and is a great technique to use. There will be no doubt when a redfish is on, as it will bend the rod and rip drag. Equipment-wise, we like to use 4000-size reels with a medium to medium heavy rod. A 15 to 20-pound braided line is plenty and fluorocarbon leaders are good for matching the bite and environment. Anywhere from a 15 to 40-pound leader is good as well. The only downside to fishing for redfish this year is that you can’t harvest any of them until June 1, 2021. The FWC has closed redfish, snook and trout until then for our area. The bite in the bay is still on for mangrove snappers, mackeral, jack crevelle, grouper and sharks. The snook bite is only going to get better over the next few months. Tight lines and we’ll see you out there.

Riverview Resident Leaves Her Daytime TV Co-Host Position After 15 Years To Start A New Chapter In 2006, Cyndi Edwards was working for a television station in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and she took a chance and auditioned for a job her agent found in Tampa. It was the local NBC station’s nationally-syndicated lifestyle show, Daytime. She auditioned and the job was hers. Now, nearly 15 years and thousands of interviews later, Edwards is leaving the show to visit family in Canada, rest and see where the global pandemic lands her. We recently held an interview with Edwards who made Riverview her home for the last 15 years. From The Tee Box With Jason Blanchard Most people can salvage a round with their performance around the green. Either with a wedge or putter, those short shots can drastically change a score. Most golf courses have four par-3 holes, meaning that you should not hit your driver more than 14 times during a round. If you average 100, that means you will only hit your driver 14 percent of your round. However, most people hit their driver 80 percent of the time when they practice, not using this time efficiently. Even if you hit a wayward second shot, you may still be OK if you have spent time practicing and perfecting your chip shots. Chipping, like putting, is very much a feel shot. The only way you can achieve feel is with muscle memory and constant practice. I personally spend so much time in the short game area at the club that when I have a 30-yard shot, I use the experiences and techniques I have learned from the range to gauge exactly how hard to swing. The average full sand wedge goes between 60 and 100 yards, depending on
the club’s loft, making it challenging to know what to do when you only have 40 yards to the flag. This is where short game practice and developing your feel and distance are key. In the article on putting, I discussed practicing from 5, 10 then 15 feet so you can establish a different feel. Using the same procedure, make sure you mark off distances from 60 yards and shorter and practice different lengths so you have the experience at that distance. Practicing this over and over again will allow the development of muscle memory and you will not just be guessing when you have those short distance shots. All aspects of your short game can save the round, so remember, when hitting the range, spend more time on your short game, and you will definitely see your scores begin to improve. Please feel free to reach out to me with any golf-related questions at golfguyosprey@gmail.com. Jason Blanchard, PGA manages the 18-hole Summerfield Crossings Golf Club as the COO/General Manager. A Door Of Hope Offers Loving Christian Homes To Tampa Bay Foster Children There is a door in the United States that most Americans don’t open. If they did, they would discover some startling statistics about foster care: According to iFoster in 2019, there are 440,000 foster youth nationwide; the need for foster parents is at an all time high; the median age in foster care is 6 ½ years old; only 5 percent of rural youth and 21 percent of urban foster youth report access to a computer at home; 30,000 youth between 18-21 years old age out of the foster system annually and exit without having found a forever home, necessitating fending for themselves; and the price of underinvesting in foster youth results in $1 million in societal costs. Closer to home in the area surrounding Tampa Bay, an average of nine children are in crises every day and are removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect or abandonment. However, there is a special door in the Tampa Bay area that has opened to reveal an opportunity for those seeking to change the present dismal foster care statistics. A Door of Hope (ADOH) offers an opportunity for kids in crisis to find loving homes. ADOH recruits, trains, licenses and supports Christian foster homes in the Florida Suncoast region. According to Sarah Weaver, develop-

ment coordinator for ADOH, people decide to become foster parents for a variety of reasons. “My husband and I had a desire to be parents, but, due to a medical condition, couldn’t make that happen on our own. The idea of foster care was presented. We began classes in February 2016 and were licensed by May 2016. We took our very first placement of two little boys ages 2 and 3 and later adopted them and their little sister in 2018.” Weaver explained that the foster process involves filling out an inquiry form at adoorofhope.com, receiving an intake phone call and attending an orientation followed by professional parenting training. A home study will then be completed. Once approved, you’ll be licensed. ADOH will provide support and walk families through the process from start to finish. Currently, there are 190 licensed foster care homes in this area. ADOH has set a goal of 300-plus homes by 2023. To achieve that goal, only one family per church would foster one child in crises, then every child would have a home. For information on fostering, financial donations ($500 to place a child) or events in November and Christmas for fosters, visit adoorofhope.com.

Local Theaters Make Movie-Watching Safe & Comfortable As They Reopen
By Taylor Wells
As movie theaters start to reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the question is: how is our safety ensured if we go to the movies? Xscape Theatres Riverview 14, Plant City Premiere LUX Ciné 8 and Pizza Pub and AMC Theatre’s Regency 20 and Riverview 14 GDX locations are well-prepared. Xscape Theatres Riverview 14 recently reopened with new and improved protocols so that your time in the theater is the best it can be, including reduced capacity in auditoriums; staggered showtimes to reduce overcrowding and allow time to clean and sanitize; social distancing; frequent cleaning procedures for commonly touched areas and daily inspections of restrooms and auditoriums; and more. Regarding concessions, food and drinks are still available, but common areas will be routinely disinfected, concession stands and kitchens will be sanitized every 30 minutes, every other register will be closed to maintain social distancing, free refills are unavailable for now, self-service condiment areas are closed and items like lids, straws, napkins and condiments are available by request. Other policies for everyone include daily health screenings, required personal protection equipment and handwashing. Xscape staff will be given extensive training and daily updates to maintain and reiterate its new cleanliness and safety policies, and online ticketing and self-service ticketing kiosks are available. Xscape’s other features and amenities include its Xtreme Xscape auditori-
ums, reserved seating, listening devices available, beer and wine, rewards program, theater rental and more. For Xtreme Xscape and 3D showings, tickets cost an extra $2.30. The theater also has Discount Tuesdays and Senior Discount Wednesdays, both being all-day tickets for $7.37. Plant City Premiere LUX Ciné 8 has implemented safety measures for staff and guests, like employees washing their hands and changing gloves frequently, constant cleaning and disinfecting of highcontact surfaces, social distancing, requiring everyone to wear masks at all times (aside from when snacking during a movie), staying home for any signs of illness and many others. As for snacking, there are limited menu items at this time, self-serve refill stations and free refills are temporarily suspended, Premiere Team members will fill your soda and ICEE cups for you and other new policies have been put into place, all to ensure safe food-handling. For reserved seating, there is a 50 percent occupancy rule so that everyone in an auditorium has an empty seat on
both sides, though friends and family can sit together. For non-reserved seating, every other row in an auditorium will be blocked off and guests are asked to space themselves out accordingly for everyone’s well-being. Along with its enhanced policies, Plant City Premiere LUX Ciné 8 provides D-BOX and IMAX for more immersive experiences and offers ticket deals for lower prices, such as: Special Opening Rate - All tickets for returning movies are only $5.43. Special Prices (new movies) - Early Bird (before 12 p.m. daily) for $6.52, Terrific Tuesday (not valid on holidays and special premieres) for $5.43 and Senior Monday (60+, no holidays) for $5.43. General Admission (new movies) Adults (12+, after 6 p.m., MondayThursday) for $10.05, Weekend Adults (12+, after 6 p.m., Friday-Sunday) for $10.32, Children (any child that takes a seat—not valid for R-rated films) for $7.61 and Seniors (60+) for $7.61 matinees (all shows before 6 p.m.). Digital 3D features cost an additional $2.50 per ticket. Premiere LUX Ciné 8
recommends that guests purchase tickets online in advance, and for further convenience it reduced the online fees to make this easier and more affordable. AMC Regency 20 and AMC Riverview 14 GDX have a new set of extensive cleaning policies called AMC Safe & Clean™ to reduce contact and keep people safe, which go along well with their other great features and amenities. These policies include: masks required for all guests and staff (except when enjoying food and drinks in the auditorium, but they must be worn when finished), social distancing standards, a simplified menu, sanitizer and wipe dispensers available in the theaters, refills being temporarily unavailable, frequent handwashing for the staff, daily temperature readings for staff, enhanced cleaning procedures developed with Clorox® and more. All AMC, AMC DINE-IN™ and AMC CLASSIC® auditoriums will also have 40 percent capacity or less, with enough space between each row for proper social distancing. It also has ‘Welcome Back’ offers, such as 30 percent off tickets every day before 5 p.m. AMC Theatres encourages guests to order tickets online ahead of time on its website or app to help reduce physical contact. For more information about these theaters and their ticket prices, offers and safety policies, visit xscapetheatres.com, www.pccmovies.com and www.amctheatres.com.

Kirksey said that particular event was an honor and a wonderful milestone, but hockey is what drives her, and that the Lightning gig is by far her favorite. “What I enjoy most is emoting what I feel about the anthem and this country in general, and the people on the other side who understand what I’m trying to get across,” said Bryson-Kirksey. “I mean every word—I’m singing with conviction, and there are parts in the anthem when I’m singing and tearing up because I do believe in this country and I do believe that we have better days ahead of us.
The America I sing about is the America that I believe in.” Bryson-Kirksey has so much pride in how well the Lightning are doing this postseason. She said that in 2015, when she started singing the anthem in the playoffs full-time when the Lightning last went to the Stanley Cup Finals, it was by far the loudest, most energetic crowd that she has ever performed for. She is disappointed that she’s missing out on seeing the team play in person this postseason, but she understands that this situation is for the better. She is high risk because she has multiple sclerosis, as well as diabetes. Bryson-Kirksey has been married to her husband, Jimmie Kirksey, since 2015, right after she retired from the military as a technical sergeant (E-6). She said that he has been her backbone through everything, including two knee replacement surgeries, foot surgery and elbow surgery. He is there with her at every game to support her. She refers to Kirksey as her hero and her strong tower. Bryson-Kirksey is hopeful that the Lightning bring home the Stanley Cup, and she is very proud of the team.
