The addition of a new district, which will specifically affect and reshape District IV, the department’s largest district is scheduled to begin serving residents in April or May 2017 is hardly a surprise. Within its more than 400 square miles, District IV, serves nearly 300,000 residents in the communities of Ruskin, Riverview, Apollo Beach, Progress Village, Lithia, FishHawk and Bloomingdale. “The change is necessary due to what is going on in District IV,” said Major Robert Bullara, who replaced retiring former District IV commander Major Ron Hartley in 2015. “We have nearly 1,000 people moving to

Hillsborough County Residents Urged To Focus On Safety For Local Blue

By Tamas Mondovics

Recent headlines that read, “Law Enforcement Firearms Fatalities Spike 78 Percent in First Half of 2016” or “Ambush Killings of Officers Increase More than 300 Percent” are just a fraction of the disturbing and sad reality of violence against members of law enforcement throughout the country. Cities like San Diego, Baton Rouge and Dallas took center stage as topics of discussion in July, not as summer vacation destinations, but places where officers were killed after being ambushed by a lone gunman. "Each day some 900,000 men and women work to keep our communities safe, and we owe each of them a debt of gratitude,” declared National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) President and CEO Craig W. Floyd. “All American citizens should be outraged at the number of officers who have been targeted, shot and killed this year.” Shining some light on the reality of violence against police in many communities, NLEOMF issued a new report with preliminary data through July 20, which revealed that 67 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in 2016—an eight percent increase over the same period last year (62). Key facts included that firearms-related fatalities (32) spiked 78 percent in the first half of this year from 18 during the same period last year. Ambush-style killings of law enforcement officers have increased more than 300 percent from the same period in 2015, as 14 officers were shot and killed

In a show of support and community partnership, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Sgt. Harrison Bashner (left) along with deputies Stephanie Quintana, Jonathan Rosa, Kenzie Basilone and Jeffrey Belcher pose for a photo with HCSO’s #Your Support Matters sign at the Osprey Observer Community Newspapers. Amidst the recent violence against officers across the nation, HCSO has been able to maintain a great community partnership and has received much support throughout the county.

in ambushes, seven were killed stopping a suspicious person and five officers were killed while executing a tactical arrest or high-risk warrants, the reports said. Texas led all states with 13 officer fatalities; followed by Louisiana with seven officer deaths. California, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia all lost three officers (as of the writing of this article) thus far in 2016. Amidst the increase of such violence, however, many are finding ways to show their support for their local law enforcement agents, police officers and sheriff’s deputies. “Thankfully, the vast majority of

Americans clearly support and appreciate the vital role law enforcement plays in our society,” Floyd said. “Now is the time for all law-abiding citizens to partner with law enforcement in support of safe communities." During a recent speech from the White House press briefing room, President Barack Obama put things in perspective for the nation when he said, “Regardless of motive, the death of these brave officers underscores the dangers that officers face every day.” The President added, “Nothing justifies violence against law enforcement. Attacks against police are attacks against all of us and the rule of law.”

To support deputies locally, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Larry McKinnon encouraged residents to remember some of the basics. “Just a simple thank you from someone in the public has a long lasting, positive impact on our deputies’ morale,” McKinnon said, while emphasizing that over the last couple of decades, the sole function of fighting crime has become only a part of HCSO’s mission. “We have significantly increased our community involvement and interaction,” he said. Poised to begin his fourth term in office, Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee acknowledged the recent increase of violence against officers in some parts of the country, but spoke highly of the countywide support his deputies have been receiving. “We are in a unique situation here in Hillsborough County, because of the tremendous show of public support,” Gee said adding that to earn the support, HCSO as a whole is truly here to serve the community and work hard to do just that. “We all live here and have a vested interest to make our community a safer place to live and work.” With safety and security a common goal, HCSO’s #Your Support Matters logo, which has been making its way around the county, has received much approval, giving testimony to the fact that public safety is and will remain an anchor of community partnership. vention of cancer. I truly care about this issue. Over the years, I have had a lot of customers who have gone through cancer. I have personally been affected. A few years ago, I lost my sister-inlaw to pancreatic cancer. We all know the pain of diagnosis and loss. This is one of the reasons that this event honors all cancer survivors.” Deborah Meegan, executive director of The Outreach Clinic said, “This event allows us to provide healthcare to hundreds of uninsured people every year. Part of the life-saving healthcare our volunteers provide includes screening for breast, cervical, prostate and colon cancer which have led to early diagnosis of cancer.” On the day of the event, there will be a mobile 3D mammogram bus from Tampa Bay Mobile sponsored by the Florida Building Inspection Group. Insurance and self-pay are welcome, just bring a prescription from a referring physician. Creager would also like to thank all of the people in the community that help to put on this event including Chris Heath of Big Beat Entertainment. Are You Prepared for Financial Disasters? “Be prepared” is the Scout motto, and it’s also pretty good advice for anyone seeking to guard against various disasters – including financial ones. Melissa L Haskins Financial Advisor

Here are some events that can have serious financial consequences, along with suggestions on preparing yourself:

• Loss of employment – If you were to lose your job, your family might have to struggle financially to make it until you’re employed again. To protect against this potential threat, try to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses. That’s a lot of money, of course, so it will be challenging to build such a fund – but try to contribute something each month to a liquid, low-risk account. Without such an emergency fund, you might be forced to cash out your 401(k) or other retirement plan to pay for your living expenses during your period of unemployment. • Loss of health – If you were ill or injured, you might be out of work for weeks or months. Your employer may offer you some type of disability insurance as an employee benefit, but it might not be sufficient. So you may also want to purchase an individual plan to cover as much of your after-tax income as possible. You’ll have the flexibility to create a policy that is tailored to your needs, budget and overall financial goals. However, policies vary widely in cost and benefits, so you’ll want to shop around for the coverage that best meets your needs. • Loss of life – Death may be an uncomfortable topic to discuss. However, if you were to pass away, it would be emotionally devastating to your loved ones – but it could also be financially catastrophic. Would your family still be able to pay the mortgage? Could your surviving spouse afford to send your kids to college? Without life insurance, your death could leave your family without the ability to cover financial obligations. The exact amount you require depends on a variety of factors, such as your family’s expenses, size of family, savings needs over time, and so on. Generally speaking, you can choose between two broad categories of insurance: term and permanent. Term insurance, as the name suggests, is designed for a specific number of years and only provides a death benefit. Permanent insurance is typically more expensive, because, in addition to the death benefit, it offers a savings component. A financial professional can help guide you through your options to determine which one is appropriate for your needs. • Loss of property – If you own a home, you already have homeowners insurance, but it doesn’t hurt to periodically check your policy to make sure it’s kept up with any improvements or additions you’ve made to your house or other property. If you’re under-covered, and had to pay out-of-pocket for some major damage, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments. And while you’re making sure your property is covered, you might also want to consider adding “umbrella” coverage, which can provide extra protection to you in case someone is injured at your home, or even at an event at which you may be in charge, such as a Scout meeting. With luck, you can avoid all the threats to your financial security and that of your family. But you can’t count on always being lucky – so you need to take “financial disaster preparedness” measures soon.

HCSO Reminds Motorists Of School Bus Safety Through “Got Brakes?” Campaign To begin 2016-2017 school year, more than 200,000 students made their way back to class, which has clearly made a huge impact on roadways felt by motorists throughout Hillsborough County. The increased rush hour traffic—

thanks to the nearly 1,000 busses on the roadways—and the presence of area students waiting for their bus or make their way to and from school on their own puts an increased responsibility, not only on drivers, but also on parents as well as students. Each year thousands of drivers illegally pass school busses on any given day amounting to millions of possible violations, not to mention putting children at risk. To keep students safe, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) also made arrangements to beef up its presence on the roadways as deputies are scheduled to

be out in force, in patrol cruisers, motorcycles and unmarked vehicles, keeping a close eye on motorists who don't know or don't heed state laws regarding stopping for a school bus. Taking it even further, HCSO is promoting its student safety efforts by means of a video presentation on the its website appropriately called “Got Brakes?” in which motorists are reminded of important rules of when they do and don't have to stop for a school bus and to make sure that the season will continue with the utmost student-safety in mind. "Got Brakes? is the name of our public awareness/enforcement campaign aimed at educating motorists about when they do and don't have to stop for a school bus,” said HCSO Public Information Officer Larry McKinnon.“ The goal is to keep our children safe through education and enforcement. This public awareness video will help you understand Florida law.” For more information on Florida's school bus laws, visit floridaschoolbussafety.gov. sions. Local roasters such as Buddy Brew, Brown Bear Coffee Roastery and Birds of a Feather Coffee will participate. Vendors such as Spaddy’s Coffee Truck and more will be on hand. Art is also a big component of this event. Local artists will be on hand to show their art in a festival style setting. There are even plans to have some of the artists do live demonstrations during the event. All of the artists are local, and all of the art is fine art that has been hand crafted. Proceeds from the second Tampa Bay Coffee and Art Festival will benefit the newly formed Bay Area Foundation for the Art (BAFA), a start-up organization that strives to provide scholarships for the fine arts and performing arts. Schultz explained how the event came to fruition. “All of us at DCNoise are into coffee and we like art, so we thought why not combine the two for an event. The first one held in April was a huge success,” said Schultz. For information and to purchase tickets, visit www.dcnoise.com and follow the Tampa Bay Coffee and Art Festival on Facebook.

Plan Your Gift And Holiday Shopping At New Saturday Market By Nicole Heubusch

Three Ways To Promote A Fun Community When people decide to move to a Homeowners Association (HOA) neighborhood, they are usually hoping to find a community that is fun and welcoming. Looking for a few easy ways to bring your HOA community together? Here are a few simple tips for creating a fun and memorable community within your HOA neighborhood.

Add More Community Gatherings To Your Social Calendar

Hosting fun events for your residents is a great way to get the community together at the pool or clubhouse. Whether you host seasonal events or parties, movie nights, or just picnic gatherings; there are plenty of social activities you can plan out to encourage a strong sense of community. Forming a “Party Planning Committee” is a good way to not only bring a group of residents together to plan fun events, but it will also give them the chance to express their opinions and ideas.

Health Or Exercise Classes

A few communities in the area have started offering group activities like yoga

DING PEN

in the park and cooking classes and that’s a great way to promote health and to bring your community together. Offering yoga, Zumba, tennis competitions or even a running group are good ideas, as well as hosting healthy cooking classes or potlucks.

Don’t Forget About Networking Opportunities

Business professionals love opportunities to connect with other business professionals, especially when they can do it in the comfort of their neighborhood’s clubhouse. Having your HOA sponsor networking events once or twice a month in the evening or morning (try a coffee meeting) will be sure to bring together likeminded business professionals who might never have met, even if they live just one street over. If your HOA has any other ideas or suggestions for promoting a fun and welcoming neighborhood, or is hosting any upcoming events that you would like featured in the Osprey Observer, send them over to nicoleh@ospreyobserver.com.

The Chapel at FishHawk announces a brand new Saturday market, The Chapel Market of FishHawk. The inaugural market day will be held on Saturday, September 3 from 1- 5 p.m. and will occur on the first Saturday of every month from September through January 2017. The market is located at 6026 Churchside Dr. in Lithia/FishHawk. The Chapel Market of FishHawk will serve as a great shopping opportunity for the community. It will include a wide variety of local small business vendors presenting products and services such as jewelry, home and holiday décor, clothing, hair accessories, candles and fragrances, health and beauty products, spa products and services, telecommunication services, home improvement products, educational services and more. “The Chapel of FishHawk is a #DoSomethingChurch, and as a small business owner myself, I knew I could do something to help support other local entrepreneurs. By asking myself ‘how could I love others and bring glory to God?’ the answer was clear and The Chapel Market was born,” said Angela Dull, event organizer. “My goal is to encourage other women, as they stay home to care for their children and still

contribute to their households by giving them a place to be represented, to be Proverbs 31 Women and to love one another as God has loved us.” Pastor Ryan Tirona noted, “I'm excited to give businesses the opportunity to share their products.” By shopping at The Chapel Market of FishHawk, you can get your holiday shopping done, avoid long lines at big box stores and take pride in knowing that you support small local businesses. You may also find something special for yourself too. Upcoming dates also include October 1, November 5, December 3 and January 7, 2017. To stay up to date as new businesses are added, visit on Facebook at www.facebook.com/events/57913315895 9090/. Businesses interested in participating should contact Angela Dull at angiedull@aol.com or 863-860-6167. The Chapel of FishHawk is led by Senior Pastor Ryan Tirona. The Chapel’s aim is to share and show the gospel of Jesus on every street and in every relationship so that all people can experience the love of God. Vendors, Artists Will Be Featured At 7th Twin Lakes Art In The Park

By Kathy L. Collins

Everyone is welcome to come to Zenia Park in the community of Twin Lakes in Valrico as they host the 7th Art in the Park on Saturday, October 1 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The lovely Zenia Park in the community of Twin Lakes in Valrico is a great location for the 7th Art in the Park. This art festival is set to take place on Saturday, October 1 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Twin Lakes is located east of Lithia Pinecrest Road at the end of Bloomingdale Avenue. The event is open and free to the community. Both artists and vendors of all kinds are encouraged to attend and share their creativity with the community. Artists and vendors can set up space anywhere within the 11 acre park. A fee of $10 is charged to offset the cost of hosting the arts event. There is no charge for Twin Lakes residents. Vendors must bring all of their supplies, including table, chairs and tent (not required). Electricity is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. Art in the Park was started by festival organizer Lisa Harmon who said, “Art in the Park evolved over eight years ago when I volunteered on the Homeowners Association Social Committee. I was

asked to create an event to bring the community together. What is better than an art festival to bring people together? This year, we would love to have as many artists as the park can hold.” The park is large enough that anyone who wants to attend and show their creativity is welcome. There will be certainly be something for everyone at this year's Art in the Park including food and entertainment. The park is shady and beautiful. It is filled with oaks that are over 100 years old. It is the perfect spot to spend a Florida fall afternoon either displaying your work or perusing the work of local artists and crafts people. Organizers expect to welcome approximately 60 vendors and 500 people to the festival this year. Anyone interested in participating can register via email at LisaHarmonHomes@gmail.com. Please provide your name, type of art or craft, and a cell phone number. Reservations are required for vendors and artists to participate.

Celebrating 100 Years Of America’s Beauty In Our National Parks: Part 2 of 2

By Michelle Colesanti

After visiting the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, we headed east spending a night in Cody, named after Buffalo Bill Cody. This small town has that real cowboy feel. The Buffalo Bill Cody Museum, which is five museums in one, will offer you great insights into the old west, Buffalo Bill Cody’s colorful life, Native Americans in the area, the wildlife in the parks and more.

Horseback Riding

Traveling east across the state, we continued with a stop at TA Ranch near Buffalo, Wyoming. There, we enjoyed lunch and a horseback ride while learning about working ranches in the area. We spent the night at nearby Ranch at Ucross. The grounds were well kept and our cabin was nicely decorated. We could have used more time here just to relax. I was amazed at the vastness of the open land in Wyoming. Comparatively, Wyoming’s total population is 563,626, while here in Hillsborough County alone, it is almost 1,300,000. We were sad to be leaving the wide open spaces of Wyoming, but excited to embark on the next leg of the journey into the plains of South Dakota.

Plains of South Dakota

At Wyoming’s eastern border, we headed into the Black Hills, so named by native Lakota because the evergreens are so thick that it makes the hills look black. Our first stop was the Crazy Horse

(Above) The Badlands in southwest South Dakota. (Left) Phil and Michelle horseback riding at TA Ranch. (Right) Mount Rushmore.

Memorial, commemorating the 19th century Lakota warrior who fought to preserve Native American traditions. It is the world’s largest mountain carving. This private endeavor was started by Korczak Ziolkowski, who began the carving in 1948. The carving is still in progress with much work still to be completed. Once we left the Crazy Horse Memorial, we headed to Mount Rushmore, South Dakota’s most famous rock carving. Completed in 1941, it was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, and eventually joined by his son Lincoln Borglum, who then completed the sculptures after his dad passed away. The four presidents on the carving are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and

Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt owned a ranch in South Dakota and with his help establishing our national parks system; it earned him a coveted spot in granite history along with the others. Our Tauck tour officially ended after our short visit to the Black Hills, but we chose to stay an extra day using Rapid City as our base so that we could visit Badlands National Park.

Black Hills Tour

I set up a private tour with Black Hills Open-Top-Tours. Our personal driver Marty spent many years in the area and shared plenty of information not only about the park, but the surrounding area.

By choosing this tour, we were able to sit back and just enjoy the scenery, learn the history, and not worry about driving. We could pit stop wherever we wanted for photo opportunities, and there were plenty. The day was hot, reaching 109 degrees, but it wasn’t enough to slow us down. The Badlands is a unique area located in southwest S. Dakota. Its rugged landscape is almost reminiscent of the moon. Over millions of years, this area has had extensive erosion by wind and water. With the many canyons, ravines and other complex formations, it is also a geologist’s paradise as it is home to one of the world’s richest deposits of mammal fossil beds. Over 70 million years ago, this area was covered by water. Dinosaurs lived at this time, but not in this area. I found it interesting that alligators roamed this area from about 34 to 37 million years ago and fossils of gators have been found. The colors on the mountains are unique. Sedimentary layers of different colors are based on when the mountain was formed. Plenty of wildlife calls this area home. We saw bison, mountain goats and many prairie dogs. After an ice cream and shopping stop at Wall Drug Store, South Dakota’s famous roadside attraction, we headed back to Rapid City and an end to our parks tour. You can find information on all of the National Parks by visiting www.nps.gov. For information on Black Hills Open-Top Tours, visit blackhillsopentoptours.com.

WITH FLORIDA YARD EXPERT Lynn Barber, Hillsborough County Extension The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences has an excellent tool for gardeners. It is the Central Florida Gardening Calendar. This resource contains the information you need on what to plant and what to do, such as landscape maintenance, pest management and much more. Let’s focus on the month of September. Under the category of What to Plant, the headings include: Annuals/Bedding plants, Bulbs, Herbs and Vegetables. Each of the categories includes a link to another University of Florida publication on that specific topic. For example, under Herbs, while several are listed in the Gardening Calendar, such as Mexican tarragon, mint, rosemary and basil, many more are showcased in the separate, herb specific publication. Under the category of What to Do, the headings include: Lawn problems, Perennials and bulbs, Irrigation, Citrus and Vegetable Gardens. Under Irrigation, during September, you should check your inground irrigation system to be sure it is working properly because our rainy season will end soon. September or October is the time to fertilize citrus. Scout for

insects in your turfgrass or landscape beds and divide your perennials, which you can transplant in another area of your landscape or share with your friends and neighbors. You can prepare your vegetable garden area and plant plants versus seeds to produce a crop more quickly. Seeds work well too, but take more time. Hopefully, the temperatures will decrease soon so we can spend more time outside. For more information on What to Plant and What to Do, you can access the Central Florida Gardening Calendar at: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep450. It will save you time and money by planting plants, fertilizing and pruning at the right time of year. Lisa Meredith said, “This is one of my favorite UF/IFAS Extension tools. I keep a copy at home and one in my car. You never know when you might visit a gardening center and purchase a few more plants.” For assistance with horticultural questions, call 744-5519 or visit the UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, 5339 CR 579 in Seffner. More gardening and workshop information is available at: hillsborough.ifas.ufl.edu. Remember to reuse, reduce and recycle.

From swimming to cycling, senior residents throughout Hillsborough County are now gearing up to take part in the annual Senior Games, scheduled for this fall. The three-week event is celebrating its 36th season anniversary as organizers are now receiving registration through Friday, September 9. The competition is to begin with a continental breakfast on Monday, September 26 and will run through Thursday, October 13. According to county officials and event organizers, the annual event draws hundreds of participants, 50 years and older, who compete in a wide variety of activities, including powerlifting, cycling, golf, pickleball, swimming, tennis, track and field, table tennis, billiards, bowling, bean bag toss, dominoes, darts, baking, hobby show, and the talent showcase. Hosted by the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, Hillsborough County Family and Aging Services, City of Tampa Recreation Department, and Temple Terrace Leisure Services, officials are pleased to see a great turnout of athletes, especially those that set a fine example of healthy living by staying active, while representing both ends of the age-spectrum. “The Senior Games offer a number of activities for socializing and competing while having fun with your peers,’’ said Debbie Robinson with Parks and Recreation, which organizes the games. The event is said to encourage people of all ages to stay healthy and live longer by exercising. While the minimum age limit is 50, officials said that contestants often are well into their 90s, such as Edith Traina, 94, who was able to deadlift 140 lbs. to win her division in the 2015 Senior Games. Traina is expected to compete again this year, county officials said. Registration is $30 and includes two tickets to the Celebration Luncheon at All People’s Life Center located at 6105 E. Sligh Ave. in Tampa on Friday, October 14. To see the full schedule of activities and to register for 2016 Senior Games, visit hcflgov.net/seniorgames or call 7445595 ext. 38206.

Bloomingdale Lady Bulls Promise Strong Start & Finish Story and photos by Tamas Mondovics

Bloomingdale High School Lady Bulls volleyball team closed last season with a disappointing 3-2 district playoff loss to Strawberry Crest. The girls were up by two games, but failed to keep the momentum going, ending the otherwise solid season with a 14-5 overall and 5-2 district record. But, that was then, and this is a brand new season, under third-year program Head Coach Claudia Cabrera, and her assistant coaches. “I have full confidence in the girls’ ability and determination to go much farther this year,” Cabrera said during a recent practice. “We will be focusing a little bit on everything, but we have great leadership and a positive spirit on and off the court.” Cabrera’s confidence stems from a great turnout for the 2016-2017 season’s tryout, which saw close to three dozen students, of which 30 were selected to make up this year’s Class 8A District 9 varsity and junior varsity teams. “I see a lot of potential in these players and I believe that my way Bloomingdale Senior High School Girls of coaching helps Volleyball Coach Claudia Cabrera directs them achieve their her team during a recent practice.

goals,” she said. The Bulls are facing a tough district, which once again includes Strawberry Crest, and nearby district rival Durant. The girls also face Plant City, East Bay, Lennard, and Tampa Bay Tech. The good thing is that this year’s team has three returning seniors; Emily Doyle, Natalie Mack and Andrea Brito, who bring

both experience and leadership to the program and are ready to take on the Spartans and the Cougars. “We had a tough loss at the end of last year, which we are not about to repeat,” Doyle said, adding that the team is much more experienced as well as determined to do better. “Our goal this season is to play every game strong from start

to finish.” Brito agreed when she added that as a team the girls are much closer and are like a family, which she believes is vital for success. “We are here to support each other, which helps especially when things are not going well on or off the court,” Brito said. Emphasizing that all credit goes to Coach Cabrera and her faith in the team’s success, Mack put things in perspective when she said during a quick break from practice, “She pushes us hard and is tough on practice, but it is what we need. She wants the best for us.” There is little doubt the girls are hungry to reach this year’s district round for a chance to prove their titleworthiness as well as their desire to go farther. While there is much work to be done, it is safe to say that the team is ready to give it all from start to finish. Crab Dip Crabs are decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura. They live in all the world's oceans, in fresh water, and on land, are generally covered with a thick exoskeleton and have a single pair of claws. Crabs vary in size from the pea crab, a few millimeters wide, to the Japanese spider crab, with a leg span of up to 13 ft. The earliest unambiguous crab fossils date from the Jurassic, although Carboniferous Imocaris, known only from its carapace, may be a primitive crab. Once crabs have become juveniles, they will still have to keep molting many more times to become adults. They are covered with a hard shell, which would otherwise prevent growth. Crabs make up 20 percent of all marine crustaceans caught, farmed, and consumed worldwide, amounting to 1.5 million tons annually. In some species, crab meat is harvested by manually twisting and pulling off one or both claws and returning the live crab to the water in the belief the crab will survive and regenerate the claws, thereby making it a sustainable industry. Crabs are prepared and eaten as a dish in several different ways all over the world. Some species are eaten whole, including the shell, such as soft-shell crab; with other species, just the claws and/or legs are eaten. The latter is particularly common for larger crabs, such as the snow crab. In the Chesapeake Bay region, blue crab is often eaten with Old Bay Seasoning. Alaskan king crab or snow crab legs are usually simply boiled and served with garlic or lemon butter. One American way to prepare crab meat is by extracting it and adding a flour mix, creating a crab cake. Crabs are often boiled alive. In 2005, Norwegian scientists concluded that crustaceans could not feel pain. Imitation crab, made from minced fish products that are crafted to resemble crab meat, is disdained throughout the culinary industry as an unacceptably low-quality substitute for real crab.

Ingredients & Directions 1 lb. lump crab meat 2 - 8 oz. bricks of cream cheese 1 cup sour cream

2 cups heavy cream 1 tbs. Old Bay 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese

Mix and chill. Use good crackers or chips!

Finish Up The Summer With The Tampa Theatre’s Annual Summer Classics Series

By Kathy L. Collins

This year’s Annual Summer Classics Series presented by the Tampa Theatre is extra special in many ways. For one, this is the 25th year of the series. Secondly, as a thank you to the community, it has been extended into the month of September. Jill Witecki with the Tampa Theatre said, “Typically the Summer Classics run through August, but for the 25th anniversary, we extended the series into September to include three of our all-time most beloved classics: The Wizard of Oz, Gone with The Wind and Casablanca. The last one coincides with our ‘Caskablanca’ WineFest Weekend.” On Sunday, September 4, bring the whole family to see the 1939 family classic, The Wizard Of Oz. This movie has been such a cinema classic since it debuted, that just about everyone can recite lines by heart. The Wizard Of Oz is a musical, a fantasy story, a kids’ movie, a disaster movie and a road trip all wrapped up in one film. Come see the iconic movie that transitions from black and white to color on the big screen.

Page 41

Bloomingdale/ FishHawk Edition

Next, on Sunday, September 11, you will not want to miss seeing Gone With The Wind in the way it was always meant to be seen- on the big screen, in a classic historic movie palace. Gone With The Wind is epic in scale, social impact and artistic influence. Set against the backdrop of the Civil War and Reconstruction, Gone With The Wind is a huge movie in every possible sense of the word. Then, on Sunday, September 18 come see the definition of Hollywood masterpiece- Casablanca. This movie typically lands on lists of the top two or three movies of all time. There is simply no better way to experience this film and all of the emotions that it exudes, than in a classic movie theatre like the Tampa Theatre. All of the above movies are set to be shown at 3 p.m. at the Tampa Theatre located at 711 N. Franklin St. in downtown Tampa. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for Tampa Theatre members and can be purchased at the Box Office or online at www.tampatheatre.org. There is a $2 convenience fee for online purchases.

Bloomingdale Graduate’s Tripstr App Helps Share Travel Memories

By Michelle Colesanti

Bloomingdale High School graduate, Austin Cooley, recently helped create, develop and launch the new Tripstr app that helps you share travel stories.

You have just returned from a great vacation and want to share the specifics of your adventures along with your pictures, but by the time you return and get around to it, you realize you have forgotten a lot of the details. Tripstr is a new app that is now available to help you share your future trips by automatically building beautiful trip journals from your iPhone photo library. The app tags the specific places you visited, stayed and dined, and instantly infuses your photos with chronology and meaning. If you have the app on your phone during a trip, Tripstr will post updates as you travel, and your followers will get notifications so they can stay up-to-date the entire trip. You have an option for privacy if you choose. Trip journals can be shared to the web and are viewable by anyone. You have the ability to share your “Top Spots” from the trip. It’s the best way to share your thoughts and recommend the most outstanding parts of your trip to other Tripstrs. Co-founder and CEO of Tripstr, Austin Cooley, is a 2004 graduate of Bloomingdale High School. He went on to earn his Computer Engineering degree (Software and Hardware) from the University of Florida. He is one of two core team members who developed Tripstr, and along with designer Oykun Yilmaz, he has spent the last five years helping to build the product. Jim Kitchen is also a co-founder and lead investor along with another important co-founder, Adlai Holler, also a graduate of Bloomingdale High School. Holler is a talented iOS Engineer that helped build the company, and now is an employee at Pinterest. Prior to Tripstr, Cooley helped create

a startup app, Quilt (Qui.lt), which is a mobile photo sharing app for families and friend groups. Cooley said, “While many users come to Tripstr looking for a place to preserve their memories, we hope they come away with inspiration for future trips. One of the main features of Tripstr is the ability to ‘Save Places’ others have been; collecting spots to visit on your next adventure.” The future looks bright for Tripstr. As it grows, upgrades will continue to be made. “We want to make it easier to find trips people have taken and the top spots they visited while traveling. Beyond that, we want to make it easier for people to integrate their photos from other sources (like Dropbox, Instagram, etc.),” noted Cooley. Video is also important to the longterm strategy, but according to Cooley, they want to get the core photo-sharing experience right before adding such a major new feature. Currently, Tripstr is only compatible with Apple products. You can download it to your iPad or iPhone. When not working hard on developing apps, Cooley enjoys playing on his keyboard. During high school and college, he was heavily involved in music. He currently resides in San Francisco, and enjoys hiking and exploring nature in the hills of the city as well as outside the city limits. For more information on the app, visit tripstr.com. Download Tripstr for free from the Apple Store at apple.co/2beRirx.

Secondhand Savvys Celebrates 10 Years Of Success By Nicole Schoen

Secondhand Savvys coowner team and mother daughter duo Shelbi Weeks (left) and Jennifer Estrada (right) celebrate 10 years in business

Secondhand shopping has become increasingly popular among the thrifty-minded consumers, offering an affordable alternative to malls. Local store Secondhand Savvys recently celebrated 10 years in business re-selling clothes and filling closets with gently used, name brand, designer clothing for men and women. Established in July 2006, Bloomingdale resident and Owner Jennifer Estrada originally began with half the shopping space of the current store, located at 210 S. Kings Ave., Ste. D in the plaza with the original Beef O’Brady’s. After a successful first year, she expanded the shop to its current size of roughly 2,500 sq. ft. “Keeping an open mind and accepting items for a wide variety of shoppers is what I feel has made us successful. We work hard as a team to constantly change displays, mannequins, wall decor, etc. for customers to adapt to upon their weekly arrival,” said Co-Owner and daughter of Estrada, Shelbi Weeks, who helps run the family-owned shop. Secondhand Savvys is different from the average consignment store as it credits money to consigner’s accounts after

an item is purchased for half the price the item was sold at with no appointment necessary. The consigner can choose to get a check for the accrued funds or use the money toward an instore purchase. After an item sits on the racks for over 60 days, the consigner has the option to pick up their items, or the shop will donate the items to either Emergency Care Help Organization or Hospice. “We currently have about 3,000 active consignors dropping off every single day, seven days a week. We receive on average 30 drop offs a day. We do not have a minimum or maximum drop off requirement therefore, one consignor can drop off 25 trash bags consisting of shoes, purses, jewelry, and clothing, and another may only drop off a small grocery bag of sunglasses and belts. After sorting through the items, we accept and put on the floor 6,000 to 8,000 pieces per month,” said Weeks. The shop sells designer clothing, swimwear, shoes, purses, accessories, formal dresses, household and beauty items, and more. Sizes range from 00 to plus sized items. Every two to three months it holds its famous Fill-A-Bag sale, usually on a Saturday morning, where shoppers can fill a single bag full from specific bins and only pay $10 for the entire bag. “I love the shabby chic vibe, the people, even the music is great. The deals are phenomenal, that goes without saying, but I know what I’m getting is top quality because of how selective and caring the owners are,” said Karen Hogan of Valrico. “I have been shopping at Savvys for six years and can’t bear to drive down Kings without making a quick pit stop.” For more information, visit www.consignsavvys.com or call 643-6020. Follow them on Instagram (@secondhandsavvys) or on Facebook to see new items that come in the shop and upcoming events.

Lose Weight • Build Strength Body Tone • Endurance • Flexibility Bob & Chris – Both Excited With Progress We always thought we were in fairly good shape for our age (both 63). We had been fitness walking for years or using a gym for our daily workouts. Our eating habits, however, had deteriorated over time, and we found we snacked a lot at night and NOT on healthy foods. We finally acknowledged that we were overweight and no longer as toned and fit as we wanted to be. It had gotten to the point that photos of us were not exactly ‘complimentary’ – shadows would simply not cover our pudginess! BEFORE AFTER About this time, we started noticing several of our friends were looking fitter, healthier, and happier and we asked questions to try and discover their secret. It turned out that each had been transformed at RobZFitness, so we summoned up our courage and marched our not-so-svelte bodies to his facility for a fitness evaluation which (unfortunately) validated our concerns. After Rob explained his proven program of nutrition, cardio, and weight training, we signed up and began our training that same week. Our personal trainer, Taylor, was awesome! He constantly assessed our progress, and cheerfully pushed us to improve (completely tuning out our stereo whining). We worked very hard every session and Taylor continually introduced new exercises to challenge and motivate us, increase our strength, and improve our muscle tone. No time to get bored! Bottom line – we are so excited with our progress. After 3 months of intense training, there has been a huge change in the way we look and feel. Bob’s body fat dropped from 25.8% to 13.5% after 12 weeks, and he lost 20+ lbs. Chris lost just shy of 20 lbs, and her body fat percentage went from 32.4% to 19.4%! We no longer mind having our picture taken! We eat healthier foods; we have more energy; and we are committed to continuing on this path so that we remain toned and fit. We promise…try it and you’ll be so glad you did!! Bob & Christine Garrett
