How Can Your HOA Use Your Newsletter To Promote Community Involvement?

Typically, most homeowners associations (HOA) provide residents with a community newsletter.

It can be weekly, bimonthly, or even monthly, as long as it provides a source of communication. It is one of the most effective ways an HOA can communicate with residents about sponsored activities, upcoming events, or just general community news and updates. If you feel that your attendance levels are low, there might be a lack of awareness about ongoing events. In that case, here are a few simple ways to get residents excited about reading their HOA newsletter.

Promote, Promote, Promote

Promote all your events. Whether a community garage sale, a networking event, a movie night, or even a big holiday event, residents won’t show up if they don’t know something is happening. Create a calendar section in your newsletter that includes a recap of last month, so residents can see what they might have missed, and add all the events for the upcoming month.

Provide HOA Updates And Board Decisions

Is there something big happening with the HOA board? Did you get the approval for pool renovations, or to

plant those new trees that residents wanted? Whatever it is that’s going on with the board, your residents might be interested in knowing.

Provide the information on board meetings too, when and where, in case residents would like to attend.

Contests

Contests are a great way to get the community involved. It could be something fun like a newsletter crossword puzzle, or even have residents take a picture of something in the community to send in for next month. Contests are especially helpful when trying to promote an event. Give away tickets to the event, or a prize during; that’s a good way to ensure a higher attendance.

Get Residents Involved

Allow your residents to have a voice in the newsletter. Ask for them to share ideas and activities for the newsletter, address their complaints in the newsletter, or even recruit a few residents to write a guest article.

The Palms Church Builds Strong Relationships In Its Christian Community By Tatiana Ortiz

What began as a dream through the words spoken from God, led to a spiritual journey that flourished into something more. The Lead Pastor Dr. Daniel Stahl from The Palms Church in Brandon, shared how God wanted him to pastor a church.

This all came into fruition six years ago, which continues today as a strong foundation in the area.

“As a transdenominational church, we emphasize on being a Christian community,” Stahl said.

In 2010, The Palms Church opened its doors. At The Palms Church, their mission aims to extend the love, hope and healing that Jesus Christ offers to individuals through a personal relationship with Himself and the church. This church does fellowship with the Florida Baptist Convention and supports various recovery ministries.

“We help people turn setbacks into comebacks,” Stahl said.

Stahl was born in Leitchfield, Kentucky. He graduated from Western Kentucky University and earned his Master’s Degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Then he continued his education through Fuller Theology Seminary in Pasadena, California and earned his Doctorate of Ministry Degree there. In 1980, he

moved to Brandon to work with students at Bell Shoals Baptist Church. In 2010, he moved back to Brandon from Indiana to start The Palms Church.

Stahl wants the community to know that The Palms Church offers a place that welcomes non-perfect individuals and their families to experience the love and power of Jesus. The Palms Church does provide a variety of ministries such as Life Groups, Revive Ladies Ministry, Epic Love for 6th through 12th grade and much more.

Pastor Mary Stahl from The Palms Church works alongside her husband Daniel as the head of the women’s ministry. She uses her passion, gifting and humor to communicate her commitment to this calling in small groups, conferences and weekly services. Mary also participates in the teaching preaching team at The Palms Church. Her true identity can be found in encouraging others to live for Christ.

5K Walk & Run At FishHawk Fellowship Church

The community is invited to Firm Foundation Christian Fellowship’s first annual Community Fall Festival on Saturday, October 29 from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The theme for the Festival is Theme: We are better together! Uniting Churches and the Community.

We had been fitness walking for years or using a gym for our daily workouts. Our eating habits, however, had deteriorated over time, and we found we snacked a lot at night and NOT on healthy foods. We finally acknowledged that we were overweight and no longer as toned and fit as we wanted to be. After Rob explained his proven program of nutrition, cardio, and weight training, we signed up and began our training that same week. Our personal trainer, Taylor, was awesome! He constantly assessed our progress, and cheerfully pushed us to improve (completely tuning out our stereo whining). We worked very hard every session and Taylor continually introduced new exercises to challenge and motivate us, increase our strength, and improve our muscle tone. No time to get bored!

Bottom line – we are so excited with our progress. After 3 months of intense training, there has been a huge change in the way we look and feel. Bob’s body fat dropped from 25.8% to 13.5% after 12 weeks, and he lost 20+ lbs. Chris lost just shy of 20 lbs, and her body fat percentage went from 32.4% to 19.4%! We no longer mind having our picture taken! We eat healthier foods; we have more energy; and we are committed to continuing on this path so that we remain toned and fit.

War-era Veterans Benefit from a Musical Salute Concert

War-era military veterans will benefit from a community band concert hosted

by First Presbyterian Church in Brandon on Thursday, November 10 at 7 p.m.

Proceeds will be donated to Honor Flight of West Central Florida, a non-profit organization that provides war-era veterans with all-expense paid Honor Tours to their memorials in Washington, D.C. Honor Flight has focused on taking WWII and terminally ill veterans on these trips, but plans to expand to those who served in the Korean and Viet Nam wars.

A Musical Salute will be presented by the Eastern Hillsborough Community Band, a concert band with more than 60 members. The band will perform patriotic music in honor of all veterans.

gested, but any donation, no matter how small or large, will be accepted. Admission is free for children under the age of 18.

After the concert, light refreshments will be served and a silent auction.

Get In Step To Help Joshuacord Raise Funds For Refugees

Christians will band together to support those in the Middle East being persecuted for their faith at the upcoming Freedom Run.

You can help support Joshuacord’s efforts to help refugees in the Middle East by stepping up to participate in its Fourth Annual Joshua 1:9 Freedom Run 5K. The event kicks off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 19 at Al Lopez Park, 4810 N. Himes Ave. in Tampa.

Families, children, serious runners, supporters and cheerleaders are encouraged to attend. There will be a separate start at 8:10 a.m. for walkers and strollers. Spirit FM (90.5 FM) will be onsite to promote the festivities.

Joshuacord’s mission is to help those persecuted for their Christian faith, especially in the Middle East and Africa. Proceeds for the 5K will go to families and children who are living in refugee camps in the Middle East.

Because of sponsor support, $5,700 was raised from last year’s run and 100% of it was donated to help these families. Monies raised from this year’s 5K will be donated to the same group as they still have many unmet needs. At the run, organizers will also be collecting baby blankets, gloves, and hats to ship to moms and families in refugee camps.

Joshuacord Founder Patrick Carberry, through his military experience and work with the government, witnessed first-hand the lack of religious freedom due to Islamic extremism and put together Joshuacord to raise awareness.

“As most of you have seen, there is more media attention on the urgent issue of Christians being persecuted in Iraq, Syria, Iran and Africa,” noted Carberry.

He added that the goal is to get the community engaged, raise awareness and provide hope, prayers, financial and material aid to the Christians in those countries. The 5K Freedom Run is made possible through sponsors, the support of local churches and pastors and all those who participate on race day. “We are so appreciative for your prayers, time and support,” commented Carberry.

Registration fee is $25 if completed

by November 17 and $30 on race day.

Jerry Burgin danced nine dances at a new dance competition – Encore on Florida’s East Coast. He danced the Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Swing, Rumba, Cha-Cha, Hustle and Merengue and received all First Place in Competitive and Rising Star Divisions.

FAOPA Offers Digital Photography And Interior Decorating Classes This Fall

History And Heritage Crafts On Display At The 39th Annual Pioneer Day

You will not want to miss the 39th Annual Pioneer Day on Saturday, November 12.

If you yearn for the simpler times, then transport yourself back in time and head to Plant City for the 39th Annual Pioneer Day to be held on Saturday, November 12 beginning at 10 a.m. The grounds of the Plant City High School Community Center located at 605 N. Collins St. in Plant City will be transformed as Southern Belles, old time craftsmen and more descend on the historic property.

The day long festival is free and open to the public. Old time crafts and food are available for cash.

Four Constitutional Amendments On General Election Ballot Explained

By Kathy L. Collins Florida voters for the 2016 General Election must consider four Constitutional Amendments. Five ballot measures were certified to appear on the ballots for the 2016 election. One of them, Amendment No. 4 was on the ballot during the primary and received the requisite number of votes to be enacted.

Citizens should read each closely and understand what the amendment is seeking to enact. In Florida, in order for a Constitutional Amendment to be enacted, it must win a supermajority of 60 percent of the votes.

The Constitutional Amendments include the following:

No. 1 Rights of Electricity Consumers Regarding Solar Energy Choice

Citizens should read this proposal carefully. The amendment does not provide for the right to use solar equipment, as we already have that right. Instead, it would allow state or local entities to impose fees and regulations on citizens who install solar power at their homes or businesses.

This amendment is backed largely by the utility companies.

It should be noted that Constitutional Amendment No. 4 was on the ballot during the Primary and was approved. It prevents solar panels from being counted toward a

No. 2 Use of Marijuana for Debilitating Medical Conditions

Passage of this amendment would allow legal medical marijuana for patients suffering from 10 specific debilitating conditions including, but not limited to, Cancer, Glaucoma, Epilepsy and Parkinsons.

The amendment is also designed to require the Department of Health to regulate marijuana production and distribution centers and issue identification cards for both patients and caregivers.

This amendment would provide relief from ad valorem tax assessments on homestead property for first responders who have been per-

manently disabled in the line of duty.

Currently, this exemption is available only to surviving spouses of first responders or members of the military who have been killed in the line of duty.

No. 5 Homestead Exemption for Certain Senior, Low-Income, Long-Term Residents; Determination of Just Value

This amendment seeks to provide tax relief for homes valued at less than $250,000 which are owned by individuals over the age of 65 who have lived in their home for at least 25 years.

Essentially, this would provide eligible seniors with certain property tax exemptions and allowing home values to remain fixed after application for the exemption even if the value later exceeds the designated threshold.

Voting for the 2016 General Election in Florida will begin with Early Voting which starts on Monday, October 24 and runs through Sunday, November 6.

The General Election is on Tuesday, November 8.

You must be registered to vote by Tuesday, October 11.

Florida Strawberry Festival Announces 2017 Theme

Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation has received national accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), making it one of fewer than 150 such departments in the country to achieve the prestigious designation.

The accreditation is a coveted stamp of approval that a parks and recreation system has welloperated and maintained parks and facilities and offers a robust lineup of recreation programs, according to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), under whose auspices the accreditation is given.

Parks & Recreation encompasses 176 parks, 54 recreation centers, 118 playgrounds, four skate parks, six dog parks, 38 sports complexes, 69 athletic leagues, and offers 280 recreation programs.

The accreditation process involves a self-assessment, a visit by accreditors, and a review by CAPRA. Applicants are judged on their ability to comply with 151 operational standards

Tampa’s Most Historic And Haunted Movie Palace Presents A Nightmare On Franklin Street Back by popular demand, the Tampa Theatre is presenting the 4th Annual A Nightmare On Franklin Street beginning on Friday, October 21. There will be Balcony to Backstage Ghost Tours, spooky, scary and even fun movies throughout a 10-day period.

All tours are $10 for adults, $8 for children ages two to 12 and free for Tampa Theatre Members. Tickets for the classic films are $10 for general admission and $8 for Tampa Theatre Members.

The fun begins on Friday, October 21 with a Ghost Tour at 2 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. come see the 1984 classic A Nightmare On Elm Street and then stay on for a 10 p.m. showing of Friday The 13th.

On Saturday, October 22, there is a Balcony to Backstage Ghost Tour at 11:30 a.m., and the movies begin at 2 p.m. with The Innocents. At 4:45 p.m. you can see Tim Burton’s classic, Beetlejuice.

At 7:30 p.m. you can see The Conjuring with special guest, Andrea Perron, the eldest daughter of family whose real-life haunting experience inspired the movie.

On Sunday, October 23, start the day off with the family favorite, Hocus Pocus at 2 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. see how Alfred Hitchcock reinvented how to scare people with his iconic Psycho. At 7 p.m., stay and see Scream. Finish off the day with a

viewing of Halloween at 10 p.m.
