Twin Lakes in Valrico will host its 8th Annual Art In The Park on Saturday, September 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Art in the Park is set to take place in the beautiful Zenia Park, home of gigantic and beautiful old oak trees. Twin Lakes is located east of Lithia Pinecrest Rd. at the end of Bloomingdale Ave. The event is open and free to the community. Both artists and vendors of all kinds are encouraged to attend and share their creativity with the community. Artists and vendors can set up space anywhere within the 11 acre park. A fee of $10 is charged to non-residents to offset the cost of hosting the arts event. However, there is no charge for Twin Lakes residents. Vendors must bring all of their supplies, including table, chairs and tent (not required). Electricity is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. This is a great bargain for artists and vendors. Joanne Bialas, Chair of the Twin
Lakes Communications and Social Activities Committee (CSAC) said, “The Twin Lakes of Brandon Home Owners Association, in conjunction with Lisa Harmon of Homewood Real Estate, are putting on the 8th Annual Art in the Park. This has become one of Twin Lakes’ best social activities of the year with great participation from the neighborhood as well as the surrounding communities.” Bialas added, “In the past, we have had many different forms of art from homemade cookies to painted art to hang on your wall. We also have various food vendors and live entertainment. Each year about 50 to 60 various vendors and close to 500 people attend.” Zenia Park is a perfect venue for an art festival of this kind. It is shady and beautiful and filled with oaks that are over 100 years old. Bialas said, “As always, residents of Twin Lakes are encouraged to showcase their arts and crafts at no charge. Non-residents are also eligible to reserve a space for just $10 payable on the day of the event. Booth reservations must be made in advance by email to CSAC@tlbhoa.com.

A Hawthorn Retirement Group senior living facility similar to this has been approved by the BOCC to be built on Lithia Pinecrest Rd., in Valrico just north of S. Valrico Rd.
In a 5-2 vote during its regularly scheduled meeting in early August, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commission (BOCC) gave the approval for a brand new senior assisted living facility project to be built west of the intersection of Lithia Pinecrest and Valrico Roads in Valrico. The five “for” and two “against” vote of the project by Hawthorn Retirement Group, an independent and assisted living management company came on the heels of requests for denial by the city-county planning commission as well as the zoning hearing master Susan Finch, both whom expressed their conclusion that the project goes against the Brandon Community Plan. The project in question is located on a 10-acre parcel on the west of the intersection of Lithia Pinecrest Rd. and Valrico Rd., between Lithia Pinecrest Rd, and Timber Knoll Dr., across from a retention pond and lift station. The facility plans to build a 53,000 sq. ft., three-story building with room for 145 suites and more than 100 parking places. Ahead of the vote, the County Planning Commission has determined that the Comprehensive Plan Amendment, HC/CPA 17-05 (proposed land use) was inconsistent with
the goals, objectives and policies of the Future of Hillsborough Comprehensive Plan for Unincorporated Hillsborough County, and resolved to forward its recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners for denial. Officials in part said that the primary impact of the land use change would allow more intense uses on the property and would change the scale of potential development from suburban to more of an urban development

Valrico Teen Releases Music Single Blurry Many teens use music to express their feelings, but Valrico resident Karinna Crespo has taken it a step further writing and recording an original song that she hopes many others will relate to. Mulrennan Middle Crespo, a School student Karinna Crespo recently 13-year-old stureleased her song dent at Blurry. Mulrennan Middle School, released her song Blurry in late August and it is now available to purchase online. “When I got the idea to write the song, my initial goal was to pass on a message to other kids with insecurities, the main target being teen aged girls,” said Crespo. “It seems like nowadays society creates these invisible little boxes which are filled to the brim with standards for beauty and personality. If people don’t fit into those boxes, they are considered weird or ugly or imperfect.” The song Blurry is Crespo’s answer to this problem. “I want to show people that make-up and fancy clothes are not what make a person beautiful,” she said. “We are so much more than just materialistic puppets controlled by what the world deems are perfect.” According to Crespo’s mother Yadira Talamantez, Crespo began singing in first grade and sang in her school choir, a USF choir and the Entertainment Revue

in Tampa. She was also featured singing in a Super Bowl commercial. “Karinna has always had a talent for writing stories,” said Talamantez. “When she was in seventh grade she went through that tough phase that most girls go through when they are trying to figure out where they belong. She was pretty down about fitting in so I encouraged her to get more involved in our church. She started to then sing in the choir there. We did a lot of positive encouragement and one day she decided to put her feelings into words.” Although it only took Crespo a day to write Blurry, she feels that its release would not have been possible without her friends Charles Kossivi and Damon Idomiz Curtis, who have both released music themselves. Crespo, whose dream is to perform on Broadway, is currently working on writing and releasing additional songs and hopes all her music will be available for purchase on iTunes and Spotify in the near future. For information and to listen to or purchase Blurry, visit www.karinnalanee.bandcamp.com. She can also be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at Karinna Lanee.

Students, Teachers And Parents Focus On Back To School Safety, Healthy Meals And Solar Eclipse Publix Benefits Hillsborough Schools Students
Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins and School Board members will join forces with Todd Jones, CEO and President of Publix Super Markets and Tina Johnson, Treasurer of Publix Super Markets Charities, on behalf of HCPS students and families. In a major announcement of a partnership at Mort Elementary, 1806 E. Bearss Ave. in Tampa, the trio committed to make a significant donation to support basic needs of area students. Publix, the largest employeeowned grocery chain in the United States, committed to identify eight area schools to receive assistance. School officials said that more than 64 percent of students in Hillsborough County Public Schools qualify for free and reduced price meals. The district is already providing free breakfast for every student, regardless of income. “Breakfast and lunch at school are often the only reliable meals students receive throughout the day,” HCPS spokesperson Tanya Arja wrote in a recent press release, adding that hunger is a serious concern across Hillsborough County.
Students who are hungry have trouble concentrating and a lack of a healthy, nutritious meal can affect a student’s emotional, social and cognitive learning. For more information about the effort to support area students, please visit www.sdhc.k12.fl.us.

Although Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been around for more than 350 years, it has been gaining ground as a complementary, holistic medical treatment option for a wide variety of FDAapproved neurological benefits, orthopedic uses, wound care, and other medical conditions. Disorders being treated include chemotherapy induced injuries, diabetic wounds, scars resulting from surgery, autism, cerebral palsy, stroke, and traumatic brain injury. Patients who have undergone plastic or C-section surgeries also do well with faster and complete healing of scar tissues. Brandon Homeschool Fellowship Feels Like Family For Members
By Michael Smith
Field trips are a great place to build friendships.
When Bridee Manning was looking for a new homeschool support group about seven years ago, she tried several groups in the area but none of them seemed like a good fit for her family. Then she checked out Brandon Homeschool Fellowship (BHSF), a Christian homeschool support group that has been encouraging and supporting homeschool families in the Brandon area for almost 30 years. She felt at home in the group right away and has never left. “[BHSF] was the one that fit, it was the one that was ‘family’ right off. They embraced me, they said hello to me, they accepted me and my [two] children,” Manning said at BHSF’s annual kick-off Friday, August 4, at First Baptist Church of Riverview. “It’s more than just a homeschool group, it’s a family.” And even though her children have graduated from high school she is still part of the group. “You’re connected with these people forever.” Brandon Homeschool Fellowship
plans regular extracurricular activities for children and parents, and members enjoy a weekly park fellowship day on Thursdays during the school year. Members share information relevant to homeschool families on the group’s online member forum. BHSF also has several clubs that plan field trips and activities (elementary, middle school, high school and mom’s social). The group has an initiative called MUM (Moms Uplifting Moms) in which an experienced homeschool mom commits to mentor a new homeschool mom for the school year. Membership is open to homeschool families whose oldest child is at least K4 and up. Those interested in becoming a member are invited to come to BHSF’s weekly park fellowship day at Saladino Park, located at 1705 Bryan Rd. in Brandon, on Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. during the 2017-18 school year. Welcome Team members will be available to answer questions and help you register. The membership fee is $45 per family. Each family is required to choose two service areas in which to serve. This can be setting up or cleaning up for a party, planning a field trip, or helping with a fair. For more information about Brandon Homeschool Fellowship, visit its newly redesigned website at www.brandonhomeschoolfellowship.com.

It is safe to say the Durant High School football program means business and is hungry and ready to take the season seriously. The Cougars, led by program Head Coach Mike Gottman, started off with a season opener 14-10 win against Jesuit, followed by a 28-14 victory against Sickles a week later. To give their fans who braved the weather a fair share of Friday Night Lights football excitement against Jesuit, Durant opened with an 80-yard kickoff return by Cougar junior Demarcus Governor. Durant Quarterback Carlton Potter completed two huge passes in the first half; a 43-yard touchdown to freshman Agiye Hall, and a 65-yard touchdown to senior Jory Cole. Potter ended with five of nine for 148 yards and two touchdowns. A talented trio to also look for this season includes running back Cameron Myers, fullback David Tabakovic and defensive back Corey Barnes. Durant is without question ready to lead its district lineup, while facing some very talented 7A District 9 competition including East Bay, Strawberry Crest, Lennard, Bloomingdale, Plant City and
Newsome took on Bloomingdale, whose offense came in ready to rumble, picking up 24 points in the first half and seeming unstoppable. Unfortunately, Bloomingdale seemed to have forgotten that that this wasn't Newsome’s first rodeo. The Bulls allowed 20 points in the second half and handed over the season opening victory with a final score of 27-24 to the Wolves. A week later in a close game, Newsome also defeated East Bay 17-14 but the final score came only in the second overtime. But things are not looking too bad for East Bay either. For the past nine times (including this year’s season opener game) the Indians have enjoyed the upper hand against local rival Riverview and managed to hold onto the battle trophy. Hoping to break the streak, the young Riverview team led by program head coach William Mosel, came out strong scoring first with a 26-yard field goal, by Yadir Blas, but quickly ran out of steam unable to put anymore points on the board. When it was over East Bay walked away with another annual rivalry game victory and the winning trophy after
defeating Riverview 353, forcing the Sharks to look to next year for a chance to settle at the score. The Indians led by Coach Frank LaRosa are boasting a solid roster that includes returning senior quarterback Tanner Morris and four-year varsity running back Davonte Williams, who rushed for more than 230 yards on 22 carries. “Davonte is not the biggest running
back, but I'll put him up against anybody in the county,” he said during a post game field interview. LaRosa added that Williams wants the pressure on him and has great leadership ability. “The kids respect him”, he said. Brother Kicking Duo Adds To Armwood Football Team

Football is a game known to form brotherly bonds, but for Adrian and Luis Olivo, who already have that bond, football just deepens their connection. The chemistry between the two helps them trust each other on the football field as a tandem kicker and long snapper. The boys are both playing in their first season with perennial powerhouse Armwood High School after transferring from Plant City. This will also be their first season playing football together on the same team. Adrian started playing football as a freshman at Plant City three years ago when one of his friends urged him to try
out for the team. His background as a soccer player helped him make the transition to football as a kicker. “It came easily for me,” Adrian said. “It clicked right
away.” When Adrian starting playing football his brother Luis also became interested as well. The duo sought extra guidance to help them improve upon their techniques. Coach Tom Feely, a long time kicking, punting and long-snapping specialist, and father of former NFL kicker Jay Feely, became their mentor. Feely’s track record made it an even better fit. He has coached every Armwood kicker since 2004, including Wes Skiffington, who was a three-time college All-American kicker at Stony Brook. Feely immediately saw potential in both boys, Adrian as a kicker, and Luis as a long snapper. “Both of
them were enthusiastic, coachable and hard workers,” Feely said. “Being coachable is critical to becoming a great athlete.” Luis’ was an offensive lineman at Plant City, but with a little convincing from both his brother and Coach Feely, the sophomore changed his position to long snapper, making the brothers a tandem. Along with their good friend and holder, Warren Thompson, the trio has had great success working together. “It means a lot

to me to be able to play with my brother,” Adrian said. “I feel like every time I’m going to kick, I have confidence that I will do well because I have Luis snapping to me and Warren holding for me. Armwood opened its season against Tampa Bay Tech, winning in blowout fashion 35-12. In that game Adrian, the junior kicker, made all five of his extra points and Luis was perfect on all of his snaps. The brothers are looking forward to winning many more games at Armwood this season, as well as having individual success and helping their team win. “This season I want to build on my relationships with my teammates,” Adrian said. “My goal is to be one of the best kickers in the state and also win a state championship.” Adrian and Luis hope to play in college together, and maybe one day, make it to the NFL. As for now, they just want to enjoy their last two years of playing high school football together. “This means a lot to me because not everybody gets to play high school football with their brother,” Luis said.
