Independent Feature Film Proof To Begin Production Locally, Seeks Shooting Locations

By Carl Walins

The film has a primary cast and crew of roughly 30 who are donating their time, expertise, and experience. Some participants are traveling from other parts of the state at their own expense to be part of this project. The movie's producers are hoping for community support for the project in the form of shooting locations and extras. “We're still looking for a few places to shoot: a rural church for a town hall meeting scene, a wooded area for the UFO landing site, and other locations, like a local diner, motel, and some office and/or warehouse space,” Walins said. “Eventually we're going to need extras for several scenes. We're hoping that owners of suitable locations in the area will contact us and offer their sites for use in our little film.” Property owners, residents of the area and others who provide locations, people or services to the production will receive an official thank you in the film's credits. Independent feature film Proof is set to begin production in Riverview and surrounding areas. IMRSIV Media, in association with The Independent Filmmakers of Gulf Coast and Central Florida, is currently in preproduction. Riverview was selected as the site for the movie's base of operations as it is the home of the film's writer, Steven Slawin. The project's final pre-production meeting will be held for the full cast and crew on Sunday, April 24 and principle photography begins in May. The film stars Patrick Weston and Monika Eldred as Tim and Janey-Anne Butler, a couple whose relationship is affected dramatically when Tim and his best friend, Eugene Berry (Tujuane Doughty in his first significant role) witness a UFO event. Things take an unexpected turn when author and self-proclaimed paranormal expert Stanton Kole III (veteran actor Peter J. Konowicz) arrives to assist in validating the encounter. Attempting to keep order throughout is Sheriff John Paine, played by Richard A. Ramsey. Nearby locations will stand-in for the fictional town of Palm Breeze, Florida.

Apollo Beach Nature Preserve Closed Until Mid Summer For Shoreline Restoration It has been more than five years, since members of the Apollo Beach Waterway Improvement Group (ABWIG) began their campaign to restore the Apollo Beach shoreline by means of a channel dredging project. Fast forward to today, the group is pleased to see that the project has finally reached the actual dredging phase of the three channels in Apollo Beach, and is just a couple of months away from completion. The dredging was scheduled to start in the North Channel, adjacent to TECO, followed by the South Channel, from Bal Harbor going in to Symphony Isles and Mira Bay and the Main Channel, south of Andalucia. As part of the joint effort between the County and ABWIG, Hillsborough County Conservation and Environmental Lands Management has once again closed the Apollo Beach Nature Preserve at 6760 Surfside Blvd. in Apollo Beach last month to protect public safety during the dredging phase of the Apollo Beach shoreline restoration project, which will facilitate safe boating and create a two-acre beach within the preserve. The closure of the preserve will allow heavy equipment to be safely used for the dredging phase. Apollo Beach is a 63-acre preserve at the northern terminus of Apollo Beach. Its west side, facing Tampa Bay, has been developed for recreational activities,

while the eastern portion has been restored to natural habitat consisting of dunes, islands, tidal marshes, and mangrove swamps. Tampa Electric's Big Bend power plant is located north of the preserve. The warm-water outfall from the plant attracts endangered West Indian Manatees. In preparation for the dredging, construction closed the preserve down nearly

a year ago to install eight lime rock breakwaters in order to reduce wave energy, minimize erosion, and reduce the amount of sediment washing into the boat channel. According to ABWIG President Len Berkstresser, the project includes the building of a dewatering basin or containment area, in which the dredged sand is collected. The process will allow the water to flow back to the bay, while the sand will then be returned, bucket-by-bucket, to rebuild the 3-acre beach inside the park. Native vegetation will be replanted along

with the rebuilding of the concrete walk and motorway. “ABWIG owes a huge gratitude to the Hillsborough Board of County Commission, especially to Commissioner Sandra Murman for her commitment and dedication to support the project,” Berkstresser said, but added that ABWIG is counting on the Board of County Commissioners’ continued support to maintain the channels and to be prepared for the next round of dredging in 10-15 years. “At the cost of around $3-4,000, the annual maintenance of the channels is relatively low,” Berkstresser said, but emphasized that the dredging cost has reached a half a million dollars this time around. “This is a huge difference added compared to last dredging of the channels in 1993, which cost a little more than $60,000.” The preserve is expected to reopen by June 21. On Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m., ABWIG will hold its next routine Town Hall Meeting at the Century 21 Beggins Real Estate Office on Hwy. 41 to provide information and answer any questions. Besides Murman, the meeting will welcome Hillsborough County Environmental Lands Manager Ross Dickerson, and County Director of Conservation and Land Management Forest Turbiville. For more information and to contribute to ABWIG, visit www.abwig.org or Apollo Beach Waterway Improvement Group on Facebook.

OUR BAGELS ARE BOILED & BAKED FRESH EVERY DAY

YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BAGEL SHOP By Nicole Heubusch

Starting A Neighborhood Watch It’s not hard to start a Neighborhood Watch program in your HOA community, but it does take some time and effort. In this article, we will provide a few tips on how your HOA can begin to implement a program.

Step 1: Research

Visit different National Neighborhood Watch program websites to find information to help you get started. such as www.nnw.org, This website has plenty of materials for your HOA community to use. In addition to finding information online, determine the area you want to organize. The whole neighborhood? If you have a larger neighborhood, more than 150 homes, you might want to divide the area into two watch programs. Use the HOA Board’s resources to reach out to the community members to see who would like to volunteer for the Neighborhood Watch program. A good ratio of volunteers is one person for every eight to 10 households. The HOA board can determine a night to present their Neighborhood Watch plan to inform the community of the program. Another idea is to set up a watch website. This will make it easier to coordinate and communicate with volunteers and residents.

Step 2: Contact The Sheriff’s Office

We recommend contacting your local

sheriff’s office to schedule guest speakers at your Neighborhood Watch presentation. The best way to get the word out to residents about the presentation is to have your neighbor volunteers distribute invitations door to door.

Step 3: Prepare A Neighborhood Map

Fast & Easy Drive Thru & Carry Out

Prepare a Neighborhood Watch map that shows the entire area involved in the watch program. Show names, phone numbers, and street numbers of each household.

Step 4: The Presentation

At the community presentation, you will identify all resident concerns and develop an action plan. Go over crime prevention techniques and how to report any suspicious activity. This is where neighbors can meet each other and establish a communication network (i.e., a telephone tree).

Step 5: Keep Everyone’s Interest

It can be hard to keep everyone interested in a project after its initial start. You want residents to keep vigilance with the Neighborhood Watch Program. There are a few ways to keep everyone involved, such as planning neighborhood outings, meetings, summer picnics, and a monthly Neighborhood Watch Newsletter. Does your HOA community have a Neighborhood Watch Program? Email nicoleh@ospreyobserver.com to be featured in next month’s edition.

Latino’s Supermarket Expands With Newly Opened Latino’s Fresh Market

By Tatiana Ortiz

Owner of Latino’s Supermarket, William Guzman, recently expanded his business with a new building, Latino’s Fresh Market.

Are you in the mood for a tasty and enjoyable experience with a diverse ethnic appeal? Owner William Guzman from the Latino’s Supermarket in Valrico has recently expanded his business and recently opened an additional building, Latino’s Fresh Market, right around the corner. Latino’s Supermarket has been in business since 1995 and is not a franchise. “It is the only one in the area,” said Guzman. The supermarket currently has fresh produce, fresh meat, grocery, deli, a bakery and Latin hot foods. Seating is available for those who choose to dine in. Customers from various backgrounds can get a glimpse of what it is like to be back in their own country while shopping, conversing or grabbing a bite to eat. “I want customers to know that this is a place where they can feel welcome and at home,” said Guzman. Not only is it a supermarket, but the

business provides various services for its customers such as catering for weddings, birthdays, etc. There is an area of the store which sells jewelry. Customers can order products online and have them delivered to their house with a minimum purchase of $40, along with up to a $20 delivery depending on the traveling distance. Customers can purchase food items for the holidays as well. Furthermore, the expansion of the market creates better parking for its customers, along with a fresh fish market and other services. “We plan on having car insurance and health insurance that customers can obtain,” said Guzman. Along with that, the store has better wholesale and retail prices for customers. ”The expansion incorporates one bakery that will reflect an array of Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican Republic, Colombian, and Mexican food products,” said Guzman. Latino’s Fresh Market is now open. Visit www.latinossupermarket.biz or call 685-9110. Located at 1608 E. SR 60 in Valrico, the hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 7 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Call 685-9110.
