On Thursday, June 1, a funeral service was held celebrating the life and legacy of Pastor Henry Wesley Furr Sr., the senior pastor of the Lighthouse Revival Center in Riverview over 20 years. ‘Pastor Hank’ is survived by his wife, Alison; his son, Henry Wesley Furr Jr. and wife Alexandra and six grandchildren. In 1991, Pastor Furr took headship of the Lighthouse Gospel Mission, a ministry devoted to helping men overcome addictions to alcohol and drugs. The organization dates back to 1952 when it started as a street ministry for the homeless. Today, thanks in part to Pastor Furr, it is a multifaceted ministry comprising of a rehabilitation facility for men and women with substance abuse addictions, a nursing home ministry, a community food bank and a prison outreach program.
ally changed forever by his life and ministry. If it were not for his influence, I would not be the person I am now. He has been a father and a mentor to me.” With many individuals graduating from the Faith Home program, Pastor Furr recognized a need for a continued support system. The graduates would need a safe place to find acceptance, be encouraged, be held accountable and attend worship services. To address this need, Pastor Furr began holding church services for the graduates and their families in a small chapel on the property. Then in 2003, a larger facility was constructed to accommodate the congregation of the Faith Home graduates and new community members, thus, birthing the Lighthouse Revival Center. The Mission Continues Non Profit Helps Veterans Help The Community Local resident and Army veteran Nadja Cockrell is on a mission to help others. After eight years in the military, Cockrell left the service due to combat related injuries. Although no longer on active duty, her serving spirit continues to influence and serve others through Tampa Bay’s The Mission Continues service platoon. The Mission Continues is a nonprofit organization that helps military veterans reintegrate into civilian life through service projects in their local community. Cockrell described her difficult transition after separating from military service. “In the military, we go from such a high sense of purpose—from literally saving lives on a daily basis. Then we get out, hold everyday jobs, and sometimes, we have trouble finding purpose." Fortunately, the Tampa platoon has filled this gap by continually meeting the labor needs of these local philanthropic organizations. Cockrell has served with The Mission Continues since its creation. However, in early 2017, she accepted full responsibility for Tampa 1st Service Platoon as its platoon leader. Even though The Mission Continues is not a Christian organization, John 13:35 says, "By this, all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Cockrell explained how actions speak louder than words and how she shows the love of Jesus through her leadership role. "You don't always have to quote Scripture or say the names, Jesus and God. The Brandon Foundation Angel Program has been able to walk alongside families during their most difficult times by lending a helping hand and providing hope. Since 2006, the Foundation Angel Program has helped over 500 families in a variety of ways. Upon receipt of a new request, an email is sent out to the Angel Teams. The Angel Team members are trained on how to support the families by assessing their short and long term needs. "When you are in the midst of a crisis, you don't care that the lawn isn't mowed, but it still has to be done. Knowing there is someone there to help support you through that difficult time can truly be the difference between having hope or no hope,” says Executive Director, Liz Brewer. needs exist and then reach out to their network of Foundation ‘Angel Providers’ who can offer a free or discounted service to the families. The services are needed for a very short time, but in other cases, it can continue for several months until the crisis is over. In some situations, a family is in need of financial assistance. As long as they meet the criteria of a life-threatening disease or catastrophic event, a request for financial assistance can be approved. The Angel Program has been successful because it gives everyone in the community the opportunity to help their fellow neighbor. While the Foundation wants to share the stories of how they have helped families, they will never sensationalize someone else’s tragedy, so that makes it difficult to get the word out. Even after 10 years, there are still many people who aren’t aware of the Foundation. How can you help? “By being our eyes and ears in the community when you see someone faced with a life-threatening disease or catastrophic event" shares Program Co-Chair, Janet Noah. Jill Lansky, Program Co-Chair adds, "Just go to our Website and enter in the request, and we will reach out to the family.” Visit BrandonFoundation.com or call 689-6889.

Local Athlete Jessica Miller Wins Special Olympic Silver, Participates In TD Bank Day
By Nick Nahas
Jessica Miller competed in her first Special Olympics event nearly 15 years ago. Her father, Jon Miller, convinced her to participate in the 100-yard dash at Durant High School. Miller won the contest with flying colors, and she kept running, even though her shoe came off in the process. Jon was waiting at the finish line, signaling to Jessica to stop at the finish, but she didn’t hear him and kept running with one shoe on around the track. Miller is a big competitor. “I love to win,” she said. Every year since then, Jessica, who has Down Syndrome, has competed in the Special Olympics. She has participated in local events and district and state competitions as well. In May, she won a silver medal at the state level in a tennis skills event. Jessica loves to take part in tennis, bowling and swimming contests, which all occur throughout the year. “She gives it 110 percent,” Jon Miller said. “She likes to win, but at the same time, she cheers for all of her friends and all of the other athletes to win, too.” Miller, a Valrico native, has lived in the area most of her life. She graduated from Bloomingdale High School in 2007. Jessica likes to swim, go to church and to the movies. She also enjoys singing and is a part of her church’s choir and
Sunday School program. She works on Tuesdays at Stein Mart as well. She also likes hanging out with her longtime friends Rima and David from school. Rima participates in Special Olympics with Jessica. Jessica has an infectious attitude that rubs off on almost everybody that she meets. She always has a smile on her face, despite her challenges. She lives life as a happy person, and in the process, she leaves a positive impact on all that meet her and get to know her. “She obviously means the world to me,” said Jon. “She has helped give me a perspective on life that’s much different because of how kind she is and how loving she is. She doesn’t get caught up in the day-to-day drama of the world, but keeps life simple and just focuses on loving others and giving the best hugs around.” On June 9, TD Bank hosted its annual Special Olympics Trading Card Day in Hillsborough County to raise money. The fundraiser enables employees, customers, friends and family to support the goal of raising more than $1 million for Special Olympics in the states where TD operates. To date, $8.7 million has been raised for Special Olympics programs. If you would like to donate to the cause, contact your local TD Bank.

Live Like You Mean It
A Simple Question Of Trust
By Derek Maul
So here we are in the middle of summer. The world continues down this troubling path, leaders repeat the same interventions that consistently failed in the past, and those of us who follow Jesus fall into the trap of thinking politically instead of trusting God. Trust. That’s the key idea I’d like to keep front and center. Do we trust God? Oh, we like to say that we do, but then we press on with business as usual as if being a disciple is irrelevant to the day-to-day living that gets us so distracted. We routinely leave our relationship with God on the sidelines, because we tend to practice the kind of faith that says, “Well being a Christian really hasn’t got anything to do with this…” or, “Jesus didn’t intend to say anything about security, and war, and terrorism…” and, “It’s just not practical to think like a disciple when we have to deal with the real world…” We find that another week has gone by, or a month, and we’re not any closer to living in the way that we know – on a deeper level – Jesus is calling us to. So do we trust God? Or is it all conditional, or part-time, or piecemeal,
or compartmentalized, or convenient, or just a facade? Then Jesus said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost” (Luke 9:2325)? Instead of trusting, do we believe we are the ones with the answers? Really? Are we seriously confident that we have things figured out that well? Are we that close to world peace, political detente, and domestic nirvana – so confident that we don’t need to trust God? If so, how exactly is that approach working for us? Peace, and more peace – DEREK Derek Maul has written for many news outlets, including the Tampa Tribune, The United Methodist News Service, All Pro Dad, FOCUS Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul and many other publications. Paper Wedding Crafts
F
or the do-it-yourself bride, paper offers versatility and affordability that can’t be beat. It’s easy to add paper touches to everything from the aisles to the favors, so you can see why brides are getting crafty with paper.
Pinterest is awash with ideas for paper creations for your wedding. Your options are endless, with scrapbooking and craft papers of every hue and texture and die-cutting machines galore on the market.
A PAPER FOR EVERY LOOK Choose chic vellum or coarse kraft paper for just the aesthetic you want. Rustic weddings themes can make great use of natural and earth-tone papers. From the invitations to placecards to guest books, mix textures and shades of browns, creams and even leafy green to keep the look natural and accessible.
CRAFT YOUR OWN FLOWERS Cut or fold paper into floral shapes and patterns for affordable but beautiful decor. With a little practice, you can make floral arrangements that are indistinguishable from the real thing. Punch sheet music or pages from old books into heart shapes to make confetti for tables at the reception or for showering the couple as they leave the festivities. These media also make for great bouquets or boutonnières. Add paper flowers to the outside of cheap paper lan-

terns for simple hanging decor. Craft paper butterflies to peek out from floral centerpieces. Hang a wall of paper flowers spaced evenly down the length of twine for the look of a floral curtain.
FUNCTIONAL CREATIONS If you expect the day to be hot, cut intricate patterns into circle-shaped sheets of scrapbooking paper and fold into a fan. Add craft sticks at each end for a unique take-home favor. Use thick stock paper to
make favor boxes or accent cardboard boxes with a greeting. Make quick work of crafting placecards with a paper and font to match your wedding theme. When it comes time to thank your guests, there’s
nothing a die-cutting machine and imagination cannot do. Use your imagination to create a card that says “thank you” in style. As you can see, the versatility of paper affords you the opportunity to get creative — just a little or a lot.

Apostle Changes Name After Identity Issues Arise
By Kelly Wise Valdes
Jude.
Previous reports identify that Jesus was betrayed by one of his own disciples, Judas Iscariot. Unfortunately, one of Jesus’ disciples with a similar name has been confused with the betrayal. This unfortunate circumstance is what led Judas Thaddaeus to change and shorten his name to Jude. As this identity issue continued to arise, he was inclined to further himself from the betrayal and often referred to himself as Thaddaeus. According to sources close to Jesus, Thaddaeus has been continually upset with being identified as the betrayer of Jesus. “After the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot, who was one of the apostles in the inner circle, Judas Thaddaeus had to create a nickname or shorten his name to Jude,” said his neighbor, Isaac of Galilee. “But when he was continually confused with Judas Iscariot, he decided just to go by

Thaddaeus.” To add further issues to Thaddaeus’ new name, there was confusion if he was the brother or son of James. Although they are distantly related, family members confirmed that Thaddaeus is not James’ brother or son. Fortunately, friends and family continue to lend support to Thaddaeus and are helping to spread the word that he did not betray Jesus. Disciple Matthew descries Thaddaeus as “A tenderhearted, gentle man who displays childlike humility.” Thaddeaus recently released his short book included in the Bible called “Jude”. It's a short epistle, but the closing two verses contain a beautiful manuscript, one of the finest expressions of praise to God in the entire New Testament. Judas Thaddaeus, he wants to put his identity issues behind him and continue on his path of patronage to Jesus. Jesus inspired 12 ordinary men to leave their old lives behind and become followers of Him. Among these new followers were fishermen, a tax collector and a revolutionary. The Gospels record the failings, struggles and doubts of these twelve men who followed Jesus. This series will document one of the disciples each month in a fun way in order to learn more about how God turned each man from ordinary to extraordinary.

A large group of local leaders and community representatives during the official ribbon cutting of the center’s brand new Ken Hagan Learn to Swim Pool.
Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center (BSAC) Executive Director Chuck Burgess, was pleased to welcome a large group that gathered last month for the celebration of the opening of a brand new community swimming pool. Guests included members of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) Greater Brandon and Valrico-Fishhawk Chambers, Honorary Mayor of Brandon Tammy Holmberg, local community leaders, and Ken Hagan, Hillsborough County Commissioner District 5, in whose honor the pool was named–the Ken Hagan Learn to Swim Pool. According to BSAC officials the completion of the pool was made possible through a partnership with the Hillsborough County Commission in a major youth drowning prevention initiative. The new facility was built as part of $1.3 million BSAC program improvement project. To support the effort, the Board of County Commissioners approved the allocation of an $800,000 gift to the BSAC, which funded the building and provided renovations to the center’s current pool.
The remaining $500,000 investment came from privately-raised dollars in the local community. “This is not just a new pool, but also a celebration of BSAC’s partnership with the Hillsborough County Commission,” Burgess said. “This partnership will greatly impact lives and allow BSAC to save more lives by spreading swim education awareness while creating new jobs and economically impacting our local business sector through events that broaden our leadership footprint in aquatics.” Assisting with the ribbon cutting festivities, Hagan emphasized the importance of the pool and the role it will play in the community, when he said, “I am honored to be here at this grand opening. This is a much-needed tool for our community, and our families.” Hagan added that with Florida leading the nation in children drowning BSAC is a valuable resource in the community. During the event, Honorary Mayor of Riverview Tammy Holmberg, owner of Chick-fil-A Brandon, delivered a proclamation to BSAC. BSAC is located at 405 Beverly Blvd. in Brandon is a community-based 501c3 non-profit. Visit, www.mybsac.org.

National Bible Bee Streams Live on Facebook
The final round of the ninth annual National Bible Bee took place last month. Participating contestants in the Bible Bee memorized 840 Bible verses in just 90 days. Christian actor and producer Kirk Cameron hosted the Bible Bee. "Since the National Bible Bee started in 2009, I've been a fan and supporter,” said Cameron. “The National Bible Bee Game Show stirs up fun, excitement and a lot of 'intended consequences' in homes worldwide." which tells the story of Adam and Eve will soon be released. Actor Martin Freeman, who is known for his role as Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit films, as well as his role in the original British movie, Office, will be producing the series. Laurence Bowen, who is one of Freeman’s production partners,
describes the show like a biblical version of Game of Thrones, transporting the reader into a world of intrigue. At stake? The future of mankind. Milton wrote Paradise Lost in the 17th century. Originally published, it had over 10,000 lines of verse and recreated the entire biblical story of creation, the fall, and what happened to Adam and Eve following their disobedience to God through eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. The character of Satan also plays a major role in the epic poem. The network, date, and times of the show are to be released soon.
Billy Graham's Rapid Response Team Chaplains Comfort Survivors of the London Apartment Fire
Crisistrained chaplains with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team were deployed to London, England, following the devastating fire at the 24-story Grenfell Tower apartment building in June. It is the third time in as many weeks that the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team has deployed chaplains in the United Kingdom. The group provided emotional and spiri-
tual care to survivors and mourners following the Manchester Arena bombing in May and the June attack on the London Bridge and the Borough Market. Chaplains with the ministry also responded to London following the terror attack in March. Following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Franklin Graham and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association developed the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team. It has since grown into a nationwide network of chaplains in 48 states who are specifically trained to deal with crises. They have deployed to approximately 250 disaster sites, including shootings, floods, hurricanes, wildfires and tornadoes. For more information on the ministry, including videos, photos, news articles and an interactive map of past and current deployments, visit www.billygraham.org/rrt.
