Faces Of Courage Has A Simple Motto: Cancer Is Serious, Camp Is Serious Fun
By Kathy L. Collins
Faces of Courage provides an assortment of free life enriching programs for children and families touched by all types of cancer and blood disorders.
added, "While the emphasis at the camps is certainly on fun, it also provides support and focuses on developing a strong positive attitude towards recovery and good health management. Many of the volunteers are survivors as well, and when they tell a camper they know what they are going through, they really do know." Sherry said, "No one can understand the cancer journey until they have heard the words 'You have cancer.' When these survivors can get together, leave their wigs in the cabin and openly talk about their feelings, worries and hopes, it is very healing." Faces of Courage has several upcoming camps for women and children. It is hosting two Adult Women's Camps on August 17-19 and September 14-16. It will host Santa's Workshop Weekend for children ages 2-12 the weekend of November 30 to December 2. Registration for camps opens approximately five weeks before camp. Camps cost approximately $250 per camper. To offset the cost of the camps, Faces of Courage holds events such as ‘It's Too Hot Music Fest’ on Sunday, July 15 and a Top Golf event on Sunday, July 22. For more information on Faces of Courage, please visit www.facesofcourage.org or call 948-7478.

Faces of Courage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides day outings and overnight camps for women, children and families touched by all types of cancer and blood disorders. All programs are given free of charge. Faces of Courage was founded by Peggy Sherry in 2004. It is a Tampa based nonprofit, but it serves cancer survivors from all over the country. Faces of Courage is able to provide services for free thanks to tireless volunteers and support from the community. Volunteers such as Larry Brooks provide essential services. Brooks, who lives in Sun City Center, became involved with Faces of Courage about eight years ago. He works in the kitchen at every camp that is held. Brooks said, "I volunteer because I see what the camp means to the survivors who attend. At one of the camps, a woman with cancer gave me a hug and thanked me for being there." Brooks

County Offers Free Mosquito Eating Fish To Help Control Season
By Kate Quesada
Noon at UF’s Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory in Ruskin. Residents only need to bring a photo ID showing their local address to receive fish. They are available on a first come, first served basis. According to
Hillsborough County and The University of Florida are teaming up to help control the area’s mosquito population by giving away free mosquito eating fish throughout the summer at different locations.
With Florida’s rainy summer days comes an even less enjoyable side effect: Mosquito season. But Hillsborough County residents with problems with the pesky insects are in luck as the County Mosquito Management Department is teaming up with the University of Florida (UF) to offer a free, easy and harmless answer to reducing the mosquito population. Residents with areas of standing water, from rain barrels to ponds and fountains, can pick up free mosquito eating fish at select locations throughout the area all summer long in an effort to stop the reproduction of the insects that leave itchy bites and carry diseases such as West Nile virus and Zika. “Our goal is to target the mosquito in the larva phase,” said Donnie Hayes, Director of Hillsborough County’s Mosquito Management Department. “After the summer rains, mosquitoes use areas of standing water to breed and if we can get these fish into as many of these areas as possible, we will have a big impact in reducing the population.” Hayes recommends that any residents with backyard ponds, birdbaths, fountains, abandoned swimming pools, rain barrels and other artificial containers that need to hold water attend one of the many free events around the county this summer to get their own fish and learn more about mosquito prevention. The fish are distributed in temporary plastic travel bags, along with instructions for introducing them to their new environment, weekly at locations throughout the county and on Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-12
Hayes, the gambusia affinis fish are effective at keeping the mosquito population down because they eat hatchlings before they turn into adults. The two-and-a-half-inch fish are a native freshwater species which require no feeding. “Care is limited to protecting them from garden sprays, chlorine or other chemicals used for cleaning,” said Hayes. “Mosquito fish do not lay eggs and need no special environment for breeding.” Hayes states that because the species of fish are native to Florida, most large bodies of water will already be home to them, however, properties that have areas of land that dry out during the winter but flood during the summer are perfect places to introduce the fish. Two local distribution events will take place on June 16. Fish will be available for pick up 9-11 a.m. at Mike E. Sansone Community Park in Plant City and 12 Noon-2 p.m. at Alderman’s Ford Conservation Park in Lithia. Events are also scheduled in Gibsonton and Ruskin on June 30 and July 28 in Riverview. For more information and additional scheduled Hillsborough County fish giveaway events, visit www.hcflgov.net/mosquitoes. The University of Florida’s Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory is located at 1408 24th St. S.E. in Ruskin.

How To Inspire Summer Reading With Fun Local Incentives While summer is the perfect time for kids to take advantage of days spent away from the classroom, remember not to put valuable skills, like reading, on the backburner. In fact, research estimates that one to two months of learning loss can occur during the summer. To help your child maintain his or her reading level and avoid the ‘summer slide’ – which can be counteracted in part by reading 20 minutes a day over the summer – Kate DiCamillo, a two-time Newbery Medal-winning author and the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program literary partner, recommends finding ways to make reading a fun, interactive experience that incorporates children’s interests. “Reading together is one of the best ways I know to foster a love of reading,” DiCamillo said. “You can read to your child. Your child can read to you. You can listen to an audiobook together. You can both read the same book at the same time and discuss it when you are done. Reading is a way to connect to each other and the world.” Help your student maintain his or her skills and develop a love of reading this summer with these tips.
Love The Library
Making periodic trips to the library as part of your routine can be a good step. For many children, browsing the shelves on their own and discovering new books in a library can help them get excited
about reading. Most libraries offer something for every reader, regardless of age or skill level, including a structured environment that can help make reading a priority. Hillsborough County Public Libraries offer ‘Build a Better World’ - Summer Events for Youth which take place through July 29. An HCPLC App is available to help you navigate through the calendar of events.
Incorporate Interests
During the school year, many of the books your student is reading are probably assigned, but summer offers the opportunity for him or her to choose what to read and tailor selections toward specific hobbies or interests, which can increase enjoyment. Start by creating a list of books and activities that align with

summer months.
those interests, and take advantage of pre-built lists at libraries or online resources like those at bookitprogram.com/summer, which offers a variety of book suggestions and activities to help increase reading during the
Program Participation
Many schools, bookstores and libraries offer summer reading programs for students. Joining a program can provide a way to track your child’s progress, and there are typically rewards involved for meeting certain criteria, which can provide a level of motivation that may otherwise be difficult to replicate. Visit Barnesandnoble at https://specialists.barnesandnoble.com/summerreading?summer-reading-lists-for-kids for its summer reading program. Read your way around the ballpark with The Tampa Bay Rays at www.mlb.com/rays/community/reading. Remi's Mini's at 11267 Winthrop Main St. in Riverview is offering a Summer Reading Program through August 1. Each school age child should read five age appropriate books, write down the title, author and what their
favorite part of the book was. Bring the paper in to Remi’s and redeem it for a free four count of donuts.
Make Materials Matter
In addition to traditional books, summer reading can include materials of all lengths, from chapter books to short stories and even magazines or comic books. Even if you’re committed to limiting screen time during the summer, consider a compromise that allows for the use of devices to read ebooks or listen to an audiobook.
Read On The Road
One of the best ways to ensure your kids are reading is to make reading materials available to them, even when you’re on the go during the busy summer months. Whether it’s a long road trip or just a trip to the store, taking books, or playing audiobooks in the car is a perfect opportunity to squeeze in some reading time. Fostering the habit during the summer can help ensure your child is prepared when school – and the annual BOOK IT! Program – starts again. The program, available to kindergarten through sixth-grade students, helps motivate students to read by rewarding them with recognition and pizza. Learn more about the program and find more summer reading tips and activities at bookitprogram.com/summer.

Tampa’s Riverwalk Offers History, Culture And Entertainment By Kathy L. Collins
Downtown Tampa is full of amenities and activities for individuals and families to enjoy. One of the newest additions is the completed Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is approximately 2.6 miles in length. It begins or ends from either the Tampa History Center or the Armature Works. You can begin at either end or anywhere in the middle. A walk along the Riverwalk is not only fun, but you get a look at Tampa's entertainment and cultural places and a walk back in time to Tampa's history. The Friends of the Riverwalk have placed historical busts along the Riverwalk. These include Clara Frye, an African American nurse. The original Tampa General Hospital building was renamed after her in 1991. Blanche Armwood was an educator, activist and first African American woman to graduate from an accredited law school. Armwood High School in Seffner is named in her honor. Ossian Bingley Hart was the 10th Governor of the State of Florida and the first one to

Summer is here – and so is vacation season. Americans spend a lot on their summer getaways – more than $100 billion in 2017 alone, as reported inTravel and Leisure magazine. When you hit the road, you will enjoy getting away from your regular tasks, but there's one part of your life that should never take a break – your investments. To keep your investments working consistently and efficiently for you, consider these suggestions: • Match the right investment with the right “job.” You hire an electrician to install a light fixture, you employ a plumber to clear a clogged drain, and you would not expect either one to work on the other's project. In a way, this view of a division of labor is similar to how you might look at different investments. In general, you purchase stocks with the hope of achieving the growth necessary to help you meet long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. On the other hand, when you purchase certain fixed-rate investments such as certificates of deposit (CDs) or money market accounts, you know they won't provide as much growth potential, but are available to fund a short-term goal – such as a dream vacation. • Evaluate investments’ performance relative to your goals. Some people think the only way to evaluate their investments’performance is to track them against a well-known market index, such as the S&P 500. However, using an index as a measuring stick has some drawbacks, one of which is the lack of a personal connection to your situation. Look at it this way: In many types of organizations, you typically go through performance reviews, where your work is assessed in terms of how well it helped you move toward

your goals – and you can follow the same process with your investments. Specifically, you can measure their performance by how effective they are in helping you move toward your financial objectives. For example, if you need your portfolio to provide you with a certain rate of return to meet specific retirement goals at a designated age, but you find that you are not currently on track toward meeting these goals, you may need to adjust your investment mix to potentially provide you with a higher return. Be aware, though, that seeking higher return potential will likely mean taking on more risk. You may want to consult with a financial professional to make sure you find a risk/reward ratio suitable for your goals and risk tolerance. • Look for hard-working investments. Some investments work especially hard. Some stocks, or investments containing stocks, pay dividends. Instead of taking the dividends, you can choose to reinvest them, purchasing even more shares – and increased share ownership is one key to helping build financial resources for the long term. Dividend reinvestment is typically automatic, so once you have chosen this option, there's really no extra work on your part. (Keep in mind, though, that companies are not obligated to pay dividends, and they can be reduced or eliminated at any time.) In the investing arena, as in many endeavors, hard work can be rewarding. So look for opportunities to keep your investments gainfully employed throughout your life.

Watch For Beautiful (But Deadly) Blooms
By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH
As gardens begin to grow and homes and yards become filled with green plants and vibrant blooms, we need to be sure that curious cats and dogs are safe from any potential dangers. Certain flowers and plants are extremely toxic and can be deadly if ingested. It is a good idea for people with a green thumb, as well as all pet owners, to keep lifesaving information on recently purchased foliage on hand. Cats are prone to chewing on indoor or outdoor plants. If you know your mischievous kitty does this, check out the ASPCA Animal Poison control Center's website www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poisoncontrol/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants to read lists of toxic and nontoxic plants to ensure that none of those you own are poisonous to pets. In addition, new puppies love to chew on anything they come across. Make sure indoor plants are placed in safe, unreachable areas to prevent potential poisonings. Some flower and plants included on the list are amaryllis, calla lilies, (and all other lilies), carnations, azaleas, daffodils, elephant's ear, hibiscus, morning glory, tulips, sago palms and especially oleander. Surprisingly, there are approximately 100 types of plants and flowers which are considered toxic. Your local floral shop or nursery should also be able to provide you with a list of potentially toxic foliage. Keep this valuable information on hand,
which can help identify potential problems if the need arises. The most common side effects that result from ingesting plants or flowers are vomiting and/or diarrhea. If you suspect that your pet may have been exposed to a potentially toxic substance, call your veterinarian for advice. It may be that emergency treatment is the best course of action you can take for your pet. You can call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435. The center is staffed 24/7. For a consultation fee, the staff will give you information, as well as take as many follow-up calls as needed from your veterinarian for the duration of the treatment. They will also send you and your veterinarian a comprehensive case summary report. Plants and flowers sprayed with pesticides can cause serious adverse reactions. Some pets also have allergies to pollens from plants and flowers, just like people. People get ‘hay fever’ symptoms that can include sneezing, runny noses and itchy eyes, but pets get itchy, inflamed skin. Symptoms include scratching excessively at the skin or ears, as well as constant licking and chewing on the skin. If you notice these symptoms, call your veterinarian to discuss ways to give your pet some relief from airborne allergies to blooming flowers, as well as plant and tree pollen.

The Perfect Wedding Band
N
ow that you have your engagement ring and settled on your venue and dress, it’s time to pick out the perfect band to accompany your lefthand sparkler.
There are many factors to consider. Cost, comfort and overall style are a few of the most important ones.
SET YOUR BUDGET
Ironically, wedding bands are one of the most overlooked costs of planning a wedding — and they can be expensive. However, you can find beautiful rings in every budget. It is important to balance what you can afford with what you want to see on your hand for the rest of your life. Be sure to account for bands for both you and your significant other. Materials (gold, platinum or titanium) and gemstones will factor into the final price.
MATCHING YOUR RING VERSUS MATCHING YOUR PARTNER’S
Answering this question will help you narrow down your choices a lot. If you want your wedding bands to match, then you need to discuss elements that both of you do (and perhaps more importantly don’t) want. Or perhaps there is a wedding
© ADOBE STOCK
band that matches your engagement ring. Be sure to discuss your options with your partner before hitting up a jewelry store.
TRY ‘EM ON
Nothing will help you make a decision faster than seeing
potential bands sitting next to your engagement ring. After you’ve set your budget and discussed your options with your significant other, it’s time to try on some rings. If you have the opportunity and the time, visit as many local jewelry stores as possi-
ble. You never know where you are going to find a deal and a truly breathtaking band. Plus, there is not much that beats spending a casual hour in a jewelry shop while associates bring you band after band to slip on your finger.
THROW OUT RULE BOOK
There are no hard-and-fast rules to what type of wedding band you should choose, including choosing none at all. Stay true to your own style and budget and you will end up with a ring you are eternally happy with.

Honeymoon Packing 101 Y
our wedding will be beautiful and something you will remember for you entire life, but there is a small part of you that will be relieved to have the stress of planning such a major event behind you and looking forward to some well-earned relaxation. Honeymoon Packing 101
Your wedding will be beautiful and something you will remember for you entire life, but there is a small part of you that will be relieved to have the stress of planning such a major event behind you and looking forward to some wellearned relaxation. No matter if you’ve planned a relaxing week on the beach, adventure in the mountains or a quick city getaway, you want to make sure you bring everything you could possibly need. C
Make A List
Making a list is the first step to ensuring nothing important gets left behind. The key is not to make your list in one sitting or just a few days before departure. You need time to come back to it. Choose things that mix and match well, and that perhaps you can get more than one use out of if you will be gone for several days.
Consider Going Carry-On Only
Not having to check any luggage makes traveling so much easier and saves you precious time! Think about it. Would you rather be pacing around
a luggage carousel or be that much closer to sipping mai tais at the beachside bar? Try packing versatile pieces for your trip, or visit a local luggage store for things like pack-flat toiletry kits and packing cubes that can save serious room in your suitcase.
Checking A Bag
No matter how inconvenient, there are some bags you just need to check. Maybe your honeymoon is an extended trip or you will be hitting several destinations in varying climates. Whatever the reason, checking at least one bag might be your best bet. If this is the situation, planning your carry-on actually becomes more important in case your checked bag doesn’t arrive with you. Consider adding travel insurance to make sure you’re covered. Always pack at least one spare outfit, comfortable flats, a swimsuit and another spare outfit appropriate for dinner. This should get you through the first few days without your checked luggage before it is either found and delivered to you, or give you enough time to purchase replacements of essential items at your destination.

Wedding Party Rentals
ne of the most commonly told fibs about bridesmaids’ dresses is that you can wear them again. If you have ever been in a wedding, you know this is decidedly untrue for the most part.
Why is it that groomsmen can rent tuxes for a small fee and return them after the party while bridesmaids are left to pay hundreds of dollars on gowns they may only wear once? According to the the BRIDES American Wedding Study 2016, the average bridesmaids dress costs $133, and the majority of brides (66 percent) pick a color and allow their bridesmaids to choose the dress style while only 33 percent match both
color and style. This much freedom for today’s bridesmaid means you shouldn’t be afraid to exercise your right to rent rather than buy your dress.
RENTAL OPTIONS
Many local shops offer discount rental pricing based on dress style and number of people in your wedding party. Ask around prior to settling on your dress company to find the best deals for your bridesmaids. They will appre-

ciate both the discounted pricing and your effort in trying to ensure it. If you have enough in your budget, offer to pay for extra jewelry or accessories to show your bridesmaids you care. You may save enough on a rental deal to allow you to do so.
BRIDESMAID QUESTIONS TO ASK
While searching for fashion rental options, be sure to ask the following questions:
• What is your damage and incidentals policy? • How long can I rent the dress for? • If I like the dress, can I have the option to buy it? Let the answers to these questions guide your final decision. As the bride, remember to include your bridesmaids in the decision-making process. This will help keep everyone on the same page and ensure your friends’ enthusiasm on your special day.

Summer Wedding Details There are many advantages to getting married in the summer. For starters, It’s easier for people to take off work and the weather is more consistent. Make your wedding stand out by incorporating some of the following details. 1. A self-serve ice cream bar or snow cone cart. Both whimsical and refreshing, a snow cone cart or ice cream bar puts a new twist on wedding desserts. They also keep guests cool as a cucumber on a sultry summer day. Check with party rental companies to see what options they can offer. 2. Signature cocktails. You can have a signature cocktail no matter the season of your wedding. But a crisp cocktail in a bright color screams summer — not to mention many fruits and veggies are in season and at their height of flavor. Work with a local bartender to find out what’s in season to craft the best drink to reflect your tastes. 3. Lawn games. The summer wedding season brings many an outdoor affair. Let guests make their own fun by offering a selection of lawn games, such as, croquet and lawn dice, which work well with
players sporting formal wear. 4. Sparklers. When things get late and it’s time to take your leave, do it in style by handing out sparklers for guests to light and line your path. 5. A seaside locale. Nothing says summertime more than a beach wedding or a lawn wedding by the sea. 6. Bright bouquets. Summer was made for bold colors — and Mother Nature agrees! Choose flowers in vivid colors like red, pink or yellow. Pick large blooms like peonies, hydrangeas or sunflowers. No matter what you decide to incorporate into your summer wedding, remember to always get quotes from as many local vendors as possible. Doing so will save money and uncover unique ideas that may help your special day stand out from the summer wedding crowd.

Kid’s Community College Narrows Achievement Gap, Individualizes Instruction By Amy Schechter
KCC students excel in science.
In a recent study through the Educational Leadership and Counseling Department at Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University, Riverview South Kid’s Community College K-8 (KCC) was one of only seven schools in the state able to reverse the science achievement gap, and African American students outpaced their white counterparts on the 2016-2017 state science assessment. Established in 2003, KCC is a K8 charter with the goal of providing an individualized education based on Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory to each of its students. KCC is committed to a more well-rounded approach to education that takes into account spatial, kinesthetic, musical, inter/intrapersonal,
and naturalist intelligences. By recognizing and building upon the unique gifts each student brings and supplementing a student’s challenge areas, professors tailor an instructional approach to scaffold all students to success. “At KCC, students develop strong academic, social and emotional characteristics,” explained KCC Servant Leader, Tim Kilpatrick. Karen Seder, Campus Director, could not be more proud of her students’ success: “KCC is now and has always been dedicated to the well-being and educational success of every child.” These statistics affirm KCC’s conceptual framework, but it is the students’ excitement for learning that really drives Seder and her staff. Seeing the smiles on students’ faces when they brought back two 1st place and one 3rd place Elementary Science Fair awards and a 2nd place Middle School award is the real reward. KCC is a free public charter for all students in Hillsborough County. With nine campuses to choose from, there is a KCC near you ready to meet your child’s needs. For more information, visit online at mykidscc.org or email info@kidscc.org. KCC Riverview South K-8 is located at 10030 Mathog Rd. in Riverview. Contact Karen Seder at 671-1440 or kseder@kidscc.org.
