Center Place To Host Coach Bag Bingo By Kathy L. Collins

Gather up your friends and plan on attending Center Place’s Coach Bag Bingo on Tuesday, October 8 at 6 p.m. at Center Place in Brandon. This is your chance to have fun with friends, take home one of these fabulous new Coach Bags and support the arts all at the same time.

try. Now is your chance to have a good time, take home a beautiful Coach bag and support a wonderful, local nonprofit, Center Place. Funds raised at the event will support children’s art programs at Center Place. In addition to Coach Bag Bingo, there will also be raffle prizes, food, drinks and 50/50 tickets available. Melissa Canfield, event chair for Coach Bag Bingo, said, “I am lucky to be on the board of directors at Center Place this year. One of the reasons I agreed to join this board and the reason we are hosting this event is to help support children and the arts in our community.” Canfield added, “Many of the programs that Center Place hosts need local support. Art is such an important part of a child’s development from a young age. Fundraisers like this allow us to have a fun time, play bingo and win a new Coach purse while supporting the important programs Center Place offers to our community.” Events like Coach Bag Bingo would not be possible without support. Canfield said, “A special thank you goes out to our event sponsors, Teresa Fink with American Dream Home Mortgage and Tammy Holmberg of Chick-fil-A, Lake Brandon Village and Bloomingdale.” If you have a business or just want to support children’s art programs at Center Place, please consider donating an item for the raffle prizes. Local Businesses Come Together To Host Donation Drives For Local Military Nonprofit

By Libby Hopkins

Supporting locals and shopping local are what makes the Brandon community great. Many of the residents in the community are local business owners as well and they believe strongly in supporting locals, but the support doesn’t stop at business; it also means supporting local nonprofits. Isabella Rosal is the managing director and co-founder of Tea, Bowls and Desserts Café in Riverview and Sheila Rivera-Alba is the manager of The Salt Grotto in Valrico. Both women decided to do a donation drive for The Stano Foundation, which is a local military nonprofit that sends care packages to service members all over the world. “As a veteran-owned business, we know how it is to be out there as we have lived overseas as a family and being as a service-member on sea duty,” Rosal said. “This is the least we can do to make our service members feel the support, if not, the company that they are not alone.” Rivera-Alba wanted to do a donation drive for The Stano Foundation because she is a family member of a local veteran. “As a family member of a veteran, I have always [loved] to support the military and military families,” Rivera-Alba said. “In our business we cater to many military families and helping this foundation is our way to say,

We are very fortunate and very grateful for those who not only believe in our mission but find a way to help us ensure each request is fulfilled.” The items The Stano Foundation gets the most requests for are microwaveable macaroni and cheese cups, men’s deodorant, protein powder, protein bars and cup-o-noodles. If you bring three or more of these items to The Salt Grotto during the month of September, RiveraAlba will give you 15 percent off of your same-day product purchase or service at The Salt Grotto. The Salt Grotto promotion will end on Monday, September 30. If you bring two of the items mentioned in this story to Tea, Bowls and Desserts Café in Riverview from Sunday-Monday, September 22-30, Rosal will give you a free classic tea drink. All the items collected at both businesses will be used for the care packages The Stano Foundation sends to service members during the upcoming holidays. To learn more about The Stano Foundation or to make a donation, visit www.stano.org. The Salt Grotto is located at 1026 Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico. Toxic Algae Blooms Linked To Dog Deaths By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH

You may have heard about pet dogs getting sick and even dying soon after swimming in neighborhood ponds and lakes. These illnesses and deaths have been attributed to toxic algae in the waters. This is by no means a new threat. Algae blooms are common when weather is warmest. Similar to the algae causing red tide on our coasts, bacteria are also causing havoc in our fresh bodies of water. Due to the changing climate, the number of occurrences and intensity of toxic algae blooms in our waters are expected to increase. According to the Environmental Working Group, 2019 is seeing a recordbreaking number of algae blooms when compared to the years prior. Warmer bodies of water combined with lawn and farm nutrient runoff stimulates the growth of algae and triggers the production of toxin. Symptoms of toxic algae exposure seen in pets vary depending on what algae they are exposed to. In some cases, dogs exhibit neurologic symptoms (staggering, drooling or suffering seizures) minutes after exposure. Others may show signs of liver and gastrointestinal damage (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, not wanting to eat) later in the day. In either case, poisoning may be fatal to your pet.

Immediate veterinary treatment is essential to saving your pet’s life from algae toxin poisoning. Unfortunately, there are no specific cures. They will need to be intensely medically managed for their specific symptoms. To reduce your dog’s risk of being exposed to toxic algae, keep your dog on a leash to prevent her from jumping into a body of water that may have the poisonous bacteria. Keep your dog away from bodies of water that looks slimy or has foam or scum on its surface. Also, avoid bodies of water that have a foul smell or if it has a strange color, like blue, bright green, brown or red. If you think your pet has been exposed to toxic algae, remove them from the source immediately and rinse them off thoroughly with clean water. Make sure to rinse their mouth as well. Monitor for the symptoms mentioned above. It is recommended to take your pet to the veterinarian immediately even if symptoms are not seen right away. Getting ahead of symptoms preventively will always result in a better prognosis when compared to treating a symptomatic pet. Until a permanent solution is found to control algae blooms and their affects, we must remain vigilant on our pets’ exposure to contaminated waters. To find out more information on the toxic effects of Algal blooms and what you can do to minimize your risks, visit www.cdc.gov.

Strawberry Festival Theme Announced

The Florida Strawberry Festival announced its theme for the 85th annual event: ‘Our Perfect Vision!’ “We’re seeing 20/20,” said President Paul Davis. “Be on the lookout for some world-famous headline entertainment, incredible new food items and vendors at this year’s festival.” A new theme is created for the festival each year to offer guests a glimpse of the experience they can expect at the 11-day event. It also unifies vendors, FFA chapters, organizations, corporate partners and exhibitors who create parade floats and displays throughout the celebration. The festival’s strawberry character featured in this year’s theme artwork is an intricate part of the event’s branding and advertising efforts. In this theme’s artwork, the iconic Mr. Berry wears a fedora, 2020 sunglasses and carries a plate of strawberry shortcake. The theme centralizes around the festival’s ‘Perfect Vision’ for fun, which includes rides, food, entertainment, shortcake and much more. “The future looks bright,” said Davis. “We look forward to seeing our guests and hope they will enjoy all the 2020 Florida Strawberry Festival has to offer. Spoto Spartans The Spartans are in rebuild mode, and are looking for stability and continuity under first-year Head Coach Cassius Crawford. Crawford has been with the program for 11 years of the school’s 12-year existence — he is the fourth head coach for Spoto in the last four seasons. East Bay transfer and senior quarterback Brandon Gaines leads the offense. Coach Clay says that Gaines is a student of the game and is also mobile and multifaceted. He fills the specific needs of the pro-style offense that they run. Senior offensive lineman/defensive tackle Anderson Aricy has potential to be a college prospect as the season goes on. Other key players include senior offensive lineman Jacob Wilson, junior receiver/slot back Curtis Thomas, junior receiver Cai’re Anderson and senior running back/linebacker Darius Gaffney who may be the fastest player on the team. It is tough for a program like Spoto to grow these days when talented players can easily flock to the upper-echelon programs like Armwood, Tampa Bay Tech and Plant. Coach Crawford believes that his players and coaching staff are committed to the school

and the program, and that they have the mindset to get better every day, change the culture of the football program and build something special. He believes that if the team has success, they will be able to entice more players to stay at the school instead of transferring. He would like more players to sign up for the team so that some players won’t have to play both offense and defense, as well as special teams. According to Crawford, it has been challenging to get players cleared to play with the new system that the district has created, changing the registration process from paper to online with regard to the athletic participation packet. Some of the students have limited access to the internet, making it difficult for them to sign up. This is one of the many challenges that they face with the new electronic system that other programs may not face. They are currently working out the kinks of the new system. The motto of the team is the three C’s: commit, consistency and compete. Coach Crawford wants to change the culture of the football program, and he is well on his way.

Brandon Eagles Brandon: This is a rebuilding year for the Eagles under second-year Head Coach Antonio Brown. Sophomore Anthony Florence is the starting quarterback this season. He is a transfer from Mississippi, and this is his first season playing as a QB after playing receiver before. Coach Brown said that Florence’s major strength is reading defenses. In his first game as QB, he threw for 450 yards and two touchdowns in Brandon’s pro multiple offense. Other key players include senior running back/safety Jaden Exume, who led the team in tackles last season; senior linebacker/offensive lineman Asante Watson; junior transfer from Mississippi and nose guard Cedric Ellis; junior defensive lineman Kenric Rosario; and senior three-year starter, receiver/defensive back/running back and backup QB Jalen Morris. Coach Brown believes that his team’s biggest weak-

ness could also be its biggest strength, with the team being extremely young and inexperienced while having only six seniors on the roster. The many freshmen and sophomores on the roster can develop and grow together at the same time and, hopefully, rejuvenate the program. Brown said that his team has embraced this idea this season and they have been getting better week in and week out. He would like to see his team maintain drives this year and not turn the ball over as much and play more physical on the defensive side of the ball, and also be more of an attacking defense as opposed to sitting back and allowing the other team to be comfortable. “Wins and losses are a measuring point for a lot of teams, but for us we want to just finish and grow together,” said Brown. The team’s motto is, “One team, one family.”

Bloomingdale Bulls The Bulls are coming off their best ever season, in which they won their first two playoff games in school history and had an overall record of 11-2. They reached the regional finals for the first time, losing to football powerhouse Venice. The Bulls were very competitive against Venice, leading the game at the half. Bloomingdale is quickly becoming one of the elite football programs in Hillsborough County after being one of the worst for several years. This is partly due to Coach Max Warner who had great success in his three seasons as head coach, improving every season. Warner recently left to the program to take over as the Quarterbacks Coach at Bowling Green and has been replaced by Jake Coulson, who was the defensive coordinator for Bloomingdale last season. Coulson had great success in his first year, leading a defense that gave up less than a touchdown per game and did not give up a point until the fifth game of the season, while posting six total shutouts. This 2019 Bulls squad is full of talented players that are committed to play college football. They will return

key players such as senior quarterback Lance Alderson, senior running back Dominic Gonnella (North Dakota State commit), senior defensive tackle/tight end Quinton McCoy (Illinois commit), senior lineman Conner Pouchie, senior wide receiver and defensive back AJ Moss (North Dakota State commit), senior linebacker Gabe Jones (Davidson commit), senior wide receiver Maurice Frost, Jr. (Navy commit), junior inside linebacker Jamarion Neal and junior linebacker/running back Wa’myron Howard. The Bulls, in recent years, have run a pass-happy spread offense, boasting several talented skilled position players that have gone on to play at the next level. They will need to find their identity on offense, with the offensive line losing several key players from last season. Coach Coulson thinks that team speed will be a major strength for the Bulls. They will have their work cut out for them this season, as they have one of the toughest schedules in Hillsborough County, in which they will have to face Armwood, Durant, Plant, Plant City, Tampa Bay Tech and Lakeland.
