Tips To Safeguard Child’s Health This Winter Include Hand Washing & Sleep Warding off sickness during the fall and winter months can be a challenge. As colds and the flu run wild, encourage your children to share ideas, not germs, in the classroom, so they can stay happy and healthy this season. Teaching your children about germs can help prevent the spread of common ailments. Here are some tips for avoiding illness at school: Boost Your Child’s Immune System. Arm your child with the best weapon out there—their own immune system. Strengthen your kid’s immunity to germs with daily exercise, nutritious food and plenty of sleep. Make Sure Your Child Sleeps Well. Nothing will boost your child’s ability to stay happy and healthy more than sleep. Sleep recharges vital mental and physical functions like productivity, energy and, most importantly, your child’s immune system. Encourage Your Child to Keep Their Hands Away from Their Face. Your child touches up to 300 surfaces in just 30 minutes, most of which host bacteria. When they touch their face, especially their mouth, eyes and nose, they spread those germs instantly.

Expiration: 10.31.2019

Staff Report

Remind your child to keep their fingers away from their face until they wash their hands. Wash Hands Regularly. The number one way to keep germs at bay is to encourage your child to wash their hands as soon as they get home from school. Since most children view handwashing as just another chore, mix things up and make it fun: pick a fun song to sing while they wash up, use scented soap or attach a personal hand sanitizer to their backpack. Ensure Your Child Gets a Flu Shot. Most children would rather take on the monster under the bed than get their flu shot. But while the discomfort of the shot is temporary, the benefits can last over six months. Think of this vaccine as your child’s first line of defense against those persistent germs. Safeguard Your Child’s Health at School. Don’t let the flu season get the best of your family. Promote healthy habits with your kids at home and teach them how to translate those skills into the classroom. You’ll be glad you did. Learn more about the children’s care services at AdventHealthTampa.com.

The ‘Lost River’ - Hillsborough County’s Roosevelt River AKA Bull Frog Creek Have you ever visited the Roosevelt River in Hillsborough County? You may have, but you probably didn’t know it. If you’ve even heard of this 22-mile stream, you are one of a very few locals that can recognize this ‘river’ as Bull Frog Creek. Gardenville beach area, where the river meets the bay, into a large-scale recreation mecca. He constructed a dance pavilion and clubhouse, both with “modern lighting, water and sanitary systems.” He also built several “sleeping porch” cottages, furnished with “everything but the groceries” for sale or rental to vacationers. Hunting, fishing, swimming and boating were featured. Tennis courts and baseball fields were available, and plans for an 18-hole golf course were announced (although never built). Easy access by boat was provided by two boats posting nominal fares, and by car along Bayshore Rd. from Tampa to the Alafia River, where Davis established a ferry service to get motorists to Gardenville. 1,000 visitors attended the grand opening on May 7, 1916, although Davis had anticipated only 300. swimmers were forced to share bathing suits as not enough were on hand. Park-goers arriving by boat could not return to Tampa until 3:00 a.m. as motorboats were stuck on a nearby sandbar. Davis offered quick solutions, however, and another large, enthusiastic crowd visited the following weekend. Weekend crowds did not last, however. By 1917, the war in Europe increasingly occupied the attention of Tampa residents. While there was no gasoline rationing, “Gasless Sunday” campaigns encouraged motorists to save fuel whenever possible. Nonessential businesses were encouraged to close operations at least one day a week. Land sales slowed. As a result of reduced demand, Davis discontinued almost all Gardenville advertising beginning in 1917. The final blow to the resort came with the disastrous hurricane of October 1921. The dance pavilion and other facilities were severely damaged. Today, very little remains to remember the town of Gardenville, and nothing remains of Davis’ resort on Hillsborough Bay but wind-blown memories. They’ve both gone the way of the Roosevelt River.

Sydney Baptist Church Transitioned Into First Call For First Responders This year on April 7, Sydney Baptist Church finished transitioning into its new identity, First Call, ‘A Unique Church for Extraordinary People.’ The 110-year-old church voted in January to change from its traditional church model into its new model for a A police officer greater focus on its speaking before a mission to help the congregation in thousands of first First Call. responders and their families in our community. Senior Chaplain (Dr.) Daniel Middlebrooks, who is a retired military chaplain, noticed that some of Hillsborough County’s first responders wouldn’t go to church because they believed they didn’t fit in, that no one could understand their experiences or that their lives were too messy. Wanting to offer a safe place where they can be around people who understand them, decompress, express their thoughts and heal, Chaplain Middlebrooks was inspired to form First Call. “It’s a growing congregation of first responders, their families and the community that, deeply, are devoted to taking care of them,” said Chaplain Middlebrooks. “There are a lot of great churches that take care of the community; what our primary target and focus is; is to take care of those who take care of our community.”

By Taylor Wells

To accommodate the schedules of first responders, First Call altered its service times. Its services and messages are also designed with them in mind, focusing on personal resilience, spiritual growth, leadership development and the readiness of daily development for putting on the armor of God. The church began its transition by installing three statues, called the Three Guardians, in front of a cross, which was built at the church’s beginning. Each statue represents a different kind of first responder. The left statue depicts law enforcement, in the middle is military and on the right is fire and rescue. Through these statues, First Call acknowledges and celebrates all first responders in our community. According to Chaplain Middlebrooks, by standing at the cross, not only do the statues represent the congregation First Call is reaching out to, they also remind us that the foot of the cross is level and that all of us need to understand what it means to live under grace as well as live that grace. First Call is located at 1510 Cre Rd. in Dover. For more information, visit firstcallsbc.com, call 652-8178 or email Chaplain Middlebrooks at chaplain@firstcallsbc.com.

Pastors Invited To Private Movie Screening With Actor Kevin Sorbo All Pro Pastors presents a special date night for pastors and their spouses featuring dinner and a private screening of the new film, Miracle in East Texas. Actors and film producers Kevin and Sam Sorbo will be in attendance for a meet and greet and photo opportunity. The special date night is coming to both Tampa and Lakeland. Pastors can either attend the premiere on Thursday, November 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Mission Hill Church in Tampa or on Friday, November 8 at 6:30 p.m. at New Life Assembly of God in Lakeland. With limited seating, the event is expected to sell out. Tickets are $25 per couple and are available for purchase at www.allpropastors.org under the Events tab. Actor Kevin Sorbo is best known for his role as Hercules in the 1990s television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. More recently, he played the atheist professor in the Christian film God’s Not Dead (2014). Miracle in East Texas is directed by Kevin and was inspired by true events. Described as a romantic Christian comedy, the film is set in the West during the Depression Era. Kevin portrays Doc Boyd, a shifty swindler taking advantage of well-to-do widows. His character is in cahoots with conman Dad Everett, played by John Ratzenberger, known for his role as Cliff in the television series Cheers.

By Amanda Boston

Sam Sorbo gives life to the character Flora May Simms, a widow who encounters the dubious pair. “We’re (All Pro Pastors) just happy, as a ministry, to invite pastors and spouses for a fun date night with a dinner and a movie,” said Paul Pickern, founder of All Pro Pastors. “This ministry has been blessed by God to bring pastors together to help align the Kingdom.” Pickern, a Plant City resident and pastor, officially founded All Pro Pastors in 2009. The international ministry is dedicated to caring for pastors through encouragement and prayer. Pastors throughout the world gather weekly at ‘Champion Tables,’ where they can ‘take off the pastor title’ and relate with others walking similar paths. Pickern concluded, “God said early on, ‘save the shepherds’ and by the grace of God that’s what we’ve been doing. With these different events, we want to be a blessing, but we also want these events to have some substance to it. Kevin and Sam’s movie is well done with Jesus all through it—where you can get the gospel and still have a good laugh.” For more information, visit the All Pro Pastors’ website. Nothing is quite as inviting as the aroma of a turkey basting in the oven and all the fixings that go with it. As homes begin to transform with holiday spirit, families and friends gather for visits and celebrations. Our pets also share in the joy of the holiday season with us. They always seem to look their cutest while begging for, and sometimes receiving, a taste of our celebrations. It is important to remember that allowing our pets to join us in our holiday feasts can sometimes lead to upset stomachs, cause diarrhea and even result in an unexpected visit to the emergency clinic or veterinarian's office. You may find it difficult at times to ignore a cat's constant meowing or a dog's imploring looks, but be sure not to overindulge their appetites. As boring as it sounds to us, pets thrive on a stable diet of the same food. For every junkyard dog with a cast-iron gut, there are 30 other pets that cannot handle a sudden change in the consistency of their diet. A well-balanced pet food with the proper ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fats gives a pet a healthy, well-regulated digestive system. Although some pets are able to enjoy a piece of the white meat from a turkey and a small helping of vegetables (without gravy or butter), others will

end up with cramps and distress from even the smallest amount of something different than their usual food. If you feel you must share your holiday dinner with your four-legged family members, remember that pets should only be given a very small amount of lean meat (i.e., low-fat chicken or turkey), vegetables and fruits. Foods to avoid include sauces, gravies, butter, sugars, dairy products or anything high in oils or fats. Do not let your pet chew on turkey bones. They can become lodged in the mouth, or small shards may get stuck in or even perforate the esophagus, stomach or intestinal tract. These brittle bones can cause so much damage internally that the outcome may be catastrophic or even fatal. Veterinarians generally tell clients not to give their pets any "people food" at all in order to avoid potential gastrointestinal pain for pets and expensive veterinary care bills for their pet owner. However, since it is human nature to include all family members, as well as our pets, in our holiday celebrations, remember these two simple rules: only feed your pets healthy choices, and only very small amounts. Our pets are much smaller than we are and do not need larger portions of any kind of food, even for those that are healthy. Remember that moderation is the key to a successful celebration.

Newsome High School Grads Blog About Lifestyle Tour Of 61 National Parks

By Kate Quesada

Lauren and Steven Keys logged more than 34,000 miles in their van in seven months earlier this year, but they saw some pretty amazing sites while doing it. The couple, both of whom grew up in the Brandon area and graduated from Newsome High School, visited all of the United States’ 61 national parks between January and August without spending a significant amount of money. They detailed their journey, with tips and suggestions for readers, on their blog, Trip of a Lifestyle. “We love to travel and this was something that we have always wanted to do,” said Lauren, who left her job before the trip but was able to develop a photography and freelance business while on the road. “We hope that by sharing our experience on our blog we can inspire other people to follow their own similar goals.” The Keys, who are high school sweethearts, left Florida on January 7 in their Nissan NV200 cargo van, which they equipped with a full-size bed. Their plan was to stay in the warmer states throughout the winter and move northward as the weather warmed up. “That was a good plan in theory,” said Steven. “But between the fact that it was a really cold winter and the government shut down, which meant that we couldn’t access some of the parks when we planned to, we had to be flexible.”

When asked which of the parks was their favorite, the Keys were easily able to answer thanks to a ranked list they put together on their trip taking into account three main factors. “We looked at three things in deciding how to rank the parks,” said Lauren. “We started with the ‘Wow Factor,’ meaning how much the park amazed us; but also took into consideration the ‘Fun Factor,’ what there was to do there; and the ‘Solitude Factor,’ because we found ourselves really enjoying the places that let us get away and have time to ourselves to think.” To learn more about the Keys’ trip, follow their blog at www.tripofalifestyle.com. GRCC members and many gymgoers gathered to celebrate the remodeling reveal of Shapes Fitness for Women-Brandon. The female-focused fitness center invited vendors in to enhance their celebration and also decorated the newly remodeled space with an explosion of pink. Several tenured employees, including Shapes Fitness for Women-Brandon owner Ann Gilbert, greeted all who joined them on this special day. Shapes has been involved in women's fitness for nearly 30 years. Its first location opened in 1990 and it has been helping women achieve their fitness goals ever since. The new remodel features an open layout, new equipment and a redesigned childcare—Kids Zone. The Kids Zone area is equipped with video monitoring so you can rest assured your children are safe and having a blast while you enjoy your workout. During the event, demonstrations were provided. One of the most unique demos was on its paddleboard simulation equipment. This prepares participants for paddleboarding on the open water or just allows them to enjoy the same workout as they would if they were on the open water. The process of hiring a new superintendent to lead Hillsborough County’s public schools has begun, with the process including input from the public online and at community forums such as the one that took place on September 17 at Bloomingdale High School. A few dozen parents, school district employees and interested residents told a consultant hired by the district to facilitate the hiring process what they want to see in the new superintendent who will replace the departing Jeff Eakins. The meeting was facilitated by Sandi Gero of Ray and Associates, a company specializing in educational recruitment that is conducting the national search. Gero said hiring a new superintendent is a task that should not be undertaken casually. “It is the most important job your school board embarks upon.” While most of the meeting was devoted to collecting input regarding the qualities expected of a new superintendent, Gero began by asking the audience why someone from outside of the Tampa area would want to move here. The answers highlighted the district’s range of school—urban, suburban and rural—as well as the high quality of its teachers and staff who work in them. The variety of academic programs such as advanced placement courses and magnet schools

actions were mentioned. Some audience members said the ability to properly manage the district’s infrastructure, especially ensuring adequate air conditioning, is needed. Supporting and providing engaging educational opportunities to a diverse student population, in terms of race, socio-economic standing, gender/sexual orientation as well as physical and cognitive abilities, was also mentioned. Jacqueline Haynes, who is director of the district’s 50 achievement schools (schools identified as needing greater district support), said closing the gap between highachieving students and those who are struggling is important. “We have to level the playing field for our students.” Audience members were also invited to submit names of people who they thought would do a good job. The information gathered at community forums and online submissions will be presented to the school board in October, with the recruiting process expected to last to the end of 2019, and a new superintendent will be selected at the beginning of 2020, according to Gero.

Exhibit Brings History’s Building Blocks To Life In LEGO® Bricks

By Manny Leto

In the U.S. for the first time, ‘Brick History’ lets visitors journey through pivotal moments in world history modeled in LEGO® bricks. Featuring key figures from Mozart to Martin Luther King, scientific discoveries from the Big Bang to DNA and recent history from mobile phones to the moon landings, history comes to life in LEGO® bricks during ‘Brick History,’ a new exhibit at the Tampa Bay History Center opening on Saturday, October 19. The exhibit features 28 meticulously crafted models, each depicting a person, moment or discovery that altered world history. ‘The Arts’ explores creativity from cave paintings to pop art, ‘Conflict’ moves from natural disasters like Pompeii to political disputes such as the Boston Tea Party, ‘Equality’ brings to life the Civil Rights movement, ‘Exploration’ depicts discoveries and inventions that have changed our world, while ‘Transport’ moves from railways and seafaring to

flight. LEGO® artist Warren Elsmore and his team have created a celebration of our shared stories, struggles and triumphs, made from everyone’s favorite Danish toy. There will be tables set up inside the exhibit area where both kids and adults can build their own LEGO® brick creations. Kids can try their hand at building iconic Florida models, including a palm tree, an alligator, a sailboat and more. ‘Brick History’ will also feature some bay area flare, with LEGO® brick portraits of pirates, local sports logos and a map of Florida by Tampa artist John Fontana from Bricks 4 Kidz. The exhibit is on view at the History Center through Sunday, February 16, 2020. Some upcoming events include: Tuesday, October 22 at 6 p.m. – Sangria and Stories: Brick History; Saturday, November 16 at 10 a.m. – Bricks 4 Kidz (ages 5-14); and Saturday, November 16 at 7 p.m. – LEGO® Brick Retro Game Night (hosted by the History Center Teen Council). The Tampa Bay History Center is located at 801 Old Water St. in Tampa. Tickets start at $10.95 for children age 7 and up, and they are free for children age 6 and under. Campo YMCA Benefits From Hand Tossed ‘Your Pie’ Pizza Opening In Brandon

Staff Report

Your Pie, the original fast casual pizza concept, opened in Brandon on September 13 at 125 E. Bloomingdale Ave. The brick oven pizzeria offers a customizable, down-the-line experience. This is its eighth Florida location. Your Pie Brandon is owned and operated by Theresa and Karen Sharkey, who look forward to bringing Brandon a new way to experience pizza. “We were initially drawn to Your Pie because the build-your-own pizza model piqued our interest,” said Theresa Sharkey. “As we learned more about the brand, we were impressed with the leadership and found that their values and mission aligned really well with our own. We love what they stand for, with a strong focus on serving the community and providing a family-friendly environment. We want to be the go-to family restaurant where every family member, no matter what age, can enjoy a good meal together with no need to compromise or sacrifice.” Prior to its official grand opening, Your Pie Brandon hosted Dine and Donate events where monetary donations were collected on behalf of the Campo Family YMCA. “The Campo Family YMCA is more than just a gym and swim,” said Executive Director Jarrod Williams. “Last year alone, the Campo Y provided more than $400,000 in subsidies to individuals and families so that they can learn the life lessons of water safety, learn the value of teamwork through youth sports programs and reach their health and wellness goals and live a better life. At the Y, we believe in strengthening the foundation of com-

munity, and thanks to Your Pie Brandon, we will be able to help impact our community together. We are very excited to receive support from another organization that cares as deeply about the community it serves as we do. Thank you, Your Pie Brandon, for helping us transform lives.”

“Our dream has always been to build a business that benefits our local community,” said Karen Sharkey. “We want to use Your Pie as a platform to serve the residents of Brandon and the surrounding areas, both in and outside our store, and we hope to be known for supporting worthy causes that matter most to this community.”

Your Pie was founded in 2008 by culinary entrepreneur Drew French, who aimed to create an innovative restaurant concept offering high-quality, brick oven pizza at incredible speed. Your Pie began franchising in 2010 and now shares its mission with nearly 70 stores across the United States, with about 50 locations in development. While family recipes and Italian culture helped lay the foundation for its processes and exceptional quality, Your Pie has continued to build upon this foundation with new ingredients, innovative recipes and endless choices to create a one-of-a-kind experience with traditional roots and a flair all its own. Your Pie uses hand-tossed dough, only fresh ingredients, homemade pizza sauces and salad dressings, and it offers vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free pizzas in addition to its traditional pizzas, chopped salads and paninis. All menu items, including its rotating seasonal menu, are inspired by family recipes from the Italian island of Ischia. The store also offers craft beer, wine and Italian-style gelato pairings designed to perfectly complement guests’ custom pizza creations. Members of the Osprey Observer staff tried the pizza during its soft opening. Everyone enjoyed not only the fresh ingredients on pizza that tasted great, but also the fun of creating interesting combinations to try. Everyone agreed that they would return. Your Pie Brandon is located at 125 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Brandon and can be reached at 502-6354. For more information, visit www.yourpie.com.
