New LongHorn Steakhouse Opens With Donation To Forgotten Angels
By Gwen Rollings
LongHorn Steakhouse in Riverview is open for lunch and dinner now.
If there had not been a freak snowstorm in Atlanta, Georgia in 1982, the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) might not have gathered on January 28 to celebrate the grand opening of the LongHorn Steakhouse in Riverview, and there might not have been a proclamation delivered by 2020 Honorary Mayor of Riverview Daniel Cyral as he recognized January 28, 2020 to be LongHorn Steakhouse Riverview Day. That snowstorm is credited with firing up the legend. Founded in 1981 in Atlanta, LongHorn Steaks Restaurant & Saloon was born of one man’s passion for the perfect steak. His dream was off to a slow start with few customers, then that freak snowstorm led stranded motorists and hungry local residents to one of the only hospitable places available. According to the LongHorn legend, tales of its expertly grilled steaks spread after that. By 1990, the LongHorn restaurants had locations throughout the East, Midwest, Southeast United States and Puerto Rico. Currently owned by Darden Restaurants, Inc., there are over 480 locations across 40 states. Managing Partner Kimberly Velez of LongHorn Steakhouse Riverview invites guests to experience “steaks done right.” LongHorn boasts that doing steaks right takes time as its slow-roasted barbecue ribs are cooked for four hours. Its prime rib is hand-rubbed with its own signature spices and slow-cooked for six hours. All
this and freshly baked bread, hand-chopped salads, seasonal sides and signature desserts are available for lunch at 11 a.m. every day and dinner until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Committed to making a positive difference in the lives of others in the community, LongHorn has donated 15 million pounds of food to local nonprofit organizations across the country. According to Gabby Morford, event coordinator for the GRCC, “LongHorn Steakhouse Riverview presented the charity, Forgotten Angels, with over $5,000 from their soft opening earnings.” Customers who join the LongHorn eClub will receive a coupon for a free appetizer on the next visit at the new location at 12974 S. US Hwy. 301 in Riverview. For more information, you can visit its website at https://longhornsteakhouse.com/home or call 232-0715.

Century 21 Beggins Opens New Saltwater Access Lots In MiraBay
By Brad Stager
The new construction represents changes at MiraBay that improve its attractiveness to homebuyers wanting to live on the water. Chief among them is the construction of a new state-ofthe-art seawall to replace what was originally built. “It's going to be about a two-year project but everybody on the water is An aerial view of new home construction at MiraBay in Apollo Beach.
Homebuyers interested in waterfront living have a fresh opportunity to own a new home in one of SouthShore’s already established premiere, masterplanned communities. More than three dozen new homes are being built on saltwater lots in the Bay Crest Isle section of MiraBay. Sales are being handled by Century 21 Beggins Enterprises. According to Craig Beggins, who is the company’s president, the new luxury homes are attracting interest from boating enthusiasts who like the easy access to the open waters of Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, just offshore from the coastal community. “All of these homesites are saltwater homesites and have direct access to canals you can take straight to the bay,” said Beggins, who has almost three decades of real estate experience in the Tampa Bay area. Beggins added that 41 total lots were originally available with homes priced from the $500s to more than $1 million, depending on size and amenities. “We’re going to build them all out, so they can buy one of our specs or they can build their own.”
going to have a brand-new seawall,” said Beggins, who credited the refinancing of the Community Development District (CDD) at a lower rate for making funds available to do the work while also reducing CDD fees for residents. Besides waterfront living that makes a quick Beer Can Island run convenient, the Apollo Beach area offers a growing number of shopping and dining options. “With the growth down here, we’re getting stuff now; finally there’s stores and restaurants,” said Beggins. To find out more about the new luxury waterfront homesites available at MiraBay, you can visit online at www.c21myway.com or in person, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, at the sales center, located at 5706 Tybee Island Dr. in Apollo Beach. You can also call Century 21 Beggins Enterprises at 731-6171.

By Gwen Rollings Riverview Relay For Life Imagines ‘A World Without Cancer’ As This Year’s Theme the Riverview Relay for Life is celebrating how each person can contribute to ending the impact of cancer on our world. They are hoping to raise $100,000, honor 25 Hope, celebration and inspiration are going to be the main goals at Riverview Relay for Life.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Communities and individuals across the globe unite in the fight against cancer as they form teams and raise critical funds. This year, the Riverview Relay for Life’s theme is ‘A World Without Cancer’ and is scheduled for Saturday, April 4, from 12 Noon to Midnight at the Riverview High School football field on 11311 Boyette Rd. The organizers of the Riverview Relay understand the devastating impact cancer has on our world. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 12.7 million people around the world find out each year that they have cancer. Currently, 10 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and the number is estimated to rise to 20 million in 17 years unless there is an effect prevention campaign. The economic impact of cancer is also significant. The World Health Organization said, “The total annual economic cost of cancer in 2010 was estimated at $1.16 trillion and has been increasing.” After reading the overwhelming statistics, it would seem impossible for one community, one neighborhood or one team to make the slightest difference in the fight against cancer. But cancer is personal. It affects one person, one family, one friendship. That is why, this year,
survivors of cancer and thank 10 community sponsors but need your help to do that through business and individual donations. Michelle Battle, who is logistics lead for the Riverview Relay and is in charge of day of event operations, set up and schedule, explained, “Relay for Life Riverview is unique in that the majority of the participating teams are students from multiple schools, from public to private. Each school’s clubs have various ways to help remember those who have passed, raise money for resources and recognize both those fighting cancer and those who care for them.” In addition to viewing a ‘tour around the world’ with each team’s Relay site decorated for a different country, there will be fun activities such as a kids zone with a bounce house and younger children activities, live music featuring local artists and schools’ bands and in the works is a mascot race between a few local businesses in mascot costumes. Come out and prove that each person can bring this global giant of cancer to its knees. For more information, contact tammy.schoonover@cancer.org.

The SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo Takes Flight This March The SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo is a 46-yearold event that began with a group of pilots who got together to have a fly-in. The fly-in has grown over the years to include a trade show, career fair, educational workshop and an air show. “Since the beginning, this event has been created and supported by volunteers,” said SUN ‘n FUN’s director of marketing and public relations, Carol Cali. “Even today, with a paid staff of 25 and 3,500 volunteers, we put on a six-day event for 225,000 guests. In 2012, we created the Aerospace Center for Excellence, and our event became our largest fundraiser. With a lot of work and diligence, the SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo raises over $2M for our programs. Of that, $500K is attributed to scholarships.” The expo will be held from Thursday to Sunday, March 31 to April 5 at Aerospace Center for Excellence in Lakeland. Tickets for the event cost $39 for adults, $18 for youth ages 7-17 and children 6 years old or younger are free. Members of SUN ‘n FUN can purchase discounted tickets. Cali and her team have worked hard to make this year’s expo a unique experience for all who attend. “In addition to the daily high-adrenaline air shows, we have two night shows that are off the chain, performers with lights and fireworks per-

forming to music,” Cali said. “Sixty world-renowned aerobatic performers, coupled with military might of the USAF Thunderbirds, the F-35A Lightning Demo Team and more will take to the skies while attendees walk among warbird legends, military displays and the like.” This year, the expo will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII as well as a STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) competition. “For the kids, we’ve added a STEMtastic Youth area which will showcase fun, STEM educational activities for kids of all ages in addition to workshops,” Cali said. “We have over 500 exhibitors, including many plane manufacturers, a three-day career fair and more. Lots of food options and live entertainment too across 2,000 acres of fun, so wear walking shoes, and we will have trams available as well. We also have all sorts of upgrade opportunities too, including the 9/27 Club.” Cali and her team hope the SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo will inspire all who attend. “Our primary objective is to inspire the public to get excited about opportunities in aerospace, which includes traditional aviation careers,” Cali said. “If we accomplish that, the rest falls in place.” Visit www.flysnf.org. The SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Center for Excellence is located at 4175 Medulla Rd. in Lakeland.

Medi-Weightloss Brandon Celebrates 14 Years Of Client Success
Open to the Public
By Kelly Wise Valdes
The physicians and trained staff at the Medi-Weightloss clinic in Brandon are celebrating 14 years of successfully working with patients to lose weight and gain a healthier lifestyle.
Medi-Weightloss in Brandon is happy to be celebrating its 14th year of helping people reach their weight loss goals. The well-known and successful weight loss center was also voted Best of the Best in 2019 by the Tampa Bay Times. The physicians and staff at the Brandon location work with patients to develop a program that will help individuals lose weight and learn to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many people are stuck on the dieting roller coaster. At MediWeightloss, the staff teaches clients to learn to live healthy for life. Michelle Hicks struggled with her weight for many years. With every passing year, losing weight became more difficult and the additional weight began to affect her health. “My health was starting to pay the price from years of being overweight with
high blood pressure and cholesterol,” said Hicks. “I was always tired and run down.” Hicks tried different fad diets and programs, with little success. “I’d been trying to lose weight on my own for months, with little to no results,” she recalled. “I would lose five pounds, then gain them right back.” Then Hicks discovered MediWeightloss. After she researched the physician-supervised program, she ultimately was able to change her life. At the Medi-Weightloss clinic in Brandon, a dedicated medical team, including the supervision of board-certified internist Andrew Weitzman, M.D., helps clients lose weight and learn to live healthier. After an initial consultation, a weight loss program was tailored to suit Hicks’ specific needs and she learned how to create a healthy lifestyle. Ultimately, Michelle lost an amazing 55 lbs. Medi-Weightloss reports that there are 250,000 people nationwide that have lost a combined total of over 6 million lbs. on the Medi-Weightloss Program. Unlike other programs, customers are not required to purchase pre-packaged foods; however, there are MediWeightloss foods that can be purchased as an option. To begin your weight loss journey, call the Medi-Weightloss clinic in Brandon at 654-1110. Medi-Weightloss is located at 203 W. Bloomingdale Ave. For more information, visit www.MediWeightloss.com.

From The Tee Box With Jason Blanchard As in life, golf has its ups and downs, rights and lefts, but it always gives you a goal to shoot for. It is a sport available to all ages and all walks of life. My entire life has revolved around the game of golf, from my first lesson at age 10 to now running one of the local area golf courses. Hopefully my knowledge and insight about the world of golf can provide you with a better perspective on the game that so many love and so many love to hate. The game of golf is rich in its history and integrity. To this day, golf is still the only sport in which a player actually calls penalties on themselves. Although everyone isn’t always 100 percent honest on their scorecard, the game does have rules for a reason and provides a fair playing field for all. In life, we all have aspirations; when you’re able to meet them, the satisfaction is immeasurable. Sometimes we achieve that elusive hole in one and other times we just get stuck in the sand and can’t seem to escape. As frustrating as it can be at times, all you need is that one perfect shot to bring
you back time and again. Monthly Tip: Let’s touch on the most important part of the game, putting. Think about it; if you are a great golfer, almost half of your shots will be spent on the green, yet most people only want to practice with their driver, which they will maybe use 14 times during a round. I know practicing putting is boring, but try to make it fun by setting up your own putting course on the practice green. Putting is about feel, and the more you practice, the better your feel. Just by practicing with your putter as much as the driver, you will notice your score go down. We look forward to your comments or questions about this game and the world that surrounds it. These articles are for you, our readers, so please feel free to email me at golfguyosprey@gmail.com. Until next month. Sheepshead: The Other White Meat… With snook, trout and redfish closed by the FWC, the go to fish for table fare this time of year is sheepshead. This year, the sheepies have already showed up strong and signs of spawning have already occurred. Sheepshead can be caught in numerous locations, mangroves, bridges, rock piles, artificial and natural reefs, pretty much any structure, but my favorite place is what I call the sheepshead hole. Located about half a mile off the shipping channel on the St. Pete side is an old rubble dump ground. It ranges around 9’-13’. When the water is clear, you can see all the rock and ruble. This area is a major spawning location for sheepshead. 50 plus fish days are not uncommon once the spawning season kicks off. This past week, we had two children on our charter and they did a great job of hooking and landing these great light-biting, hard-fighting fish. In addition to the sheepshead, they also caught some groupers, grunts, mangrove snappers and sharks, all in the same spot. The day before, they caught around 30 redfish, trout and snook amongst the mangroves. Both of these young men caught their first inshore slam (snook, trout and redfish). There are many ways to catch sheepshead. At my favorite spot, I simply use a jig head with shrimp. The size of the jig head is dependent on the
tide (current). You need to get the bait down to the bottom, amongst the rocks. The key is feeling the nibble and setting the hook. It’s one of the few species of fish that I tell our clients that it’s ok to set the hook with braided line. They are notorious bait stealers, but once you get used to the technique of hooking them it becomes fairly easy. When fishing in this area, bring plenty of leader line and jig heads, as you will get snagged in the rocks and end up with some break-offs. Although closed, winter trout season is in full swing. Trout are abundant and eager to bite both live bait and artificial baits. Often times we’ll catch bonus fish in the same locations. The ‘Sun City Crew’ had a spectacular day catching trout and got a bonus with a big pompano and sheepshead. A 50 plus fish day, they kept enough for their fish fry and released the rest. If you’re looking for a great day on the water, give me a call and I’d be happy to show you how much fun our fishery can be. Hope to see you on the water. Tight lines.
