Kiddie Academy of Bloomingdale joins a network of 220+ locations nationwide, with over 25 new academies projected to open within the next year. Events range from track and field to cycling to pickleball to billiards, dominoes, and horseshoes. Some of the more than two dozen events are qualifiers for state competition. Registration costs $15 for one event, or $25 for unlimited events. There is an additional $25 charge for those participating in the golf competition, which includes a cart. This year’s Games will be held October 7-18. In addition to being a lot of fun and a great way to stay in shape, the Games serve as a regional qualifier for the Florida Senior Games. Caring For Young Kids And Aging Parents? Listen up! Or Courts Will Do It For You.

By Laurie E. Ohall, Board Certified Elder Law Attorney

As our parents get older and begin to lose their independence, many will turn to their adult children to help them navigate the complicated and costly world of long-term care. For adult children already caring for young kids of their own, this new role of ‘caregiver’ can be a difficult one to assume. It’s no wonder this group of people is known as the ‘Sandwich Generation’ as they are literally ‘sandwiched’ between the pressures of raising a family, holding down a job and managing mom or dad’s growing medical and financial needs. If you don’t make arrangements for financial and medical decisions within your family, the courts will do it for you, so create a plan in advance while your parents still have the chance to have a say in their care and decisions. Elder law attorneys recommend five planning steps to help ensure aging parents are afforded the most protection, flexibility, and financial security, while helping the adult child retain life balance and personal sanity: Find out if your parents have an estate plan and whether it’s been updated in the past five years. The will, trust, powers of attorney, and health care directives your parents created years ago may not reflect their current wishes and long-term care needs now.

Determine How You Will Pay for Long-Term Care. Nursing home and assisted living facilities can cost up to $8,000 a month (average cost of care for skilled nursing in Hillsborough County, is now $9,485). Medicare will not pick up the tab. Inhome care can be equally burdensome. Medicaid may pay, provided you are hovering around the poverty level. Get the Legal Authority You Need Now to Manage Their Affairs and Maintain Control. If your parents do not have powers of attorney or health care directives that allow you to communicate with doctors, access medical records, and manage their financial affairs, it’s a good idea to create them now while mom or dad is still in good health. Document Their End-of-Life Wishes. Thousands of families each year are torn apart trying to decide what their loved one ‘would have wanted’ in serious medical situations. Get Organized Now to Avoid Last Minute Scrambling. Gather your parents’ important information now and create a ‘grab and go’ kit to avoid any confusion and delays in the event of a medical emergency. By being proactive and planning for these issues in advance, you can help make sure your parents receive the care they need without worry or financial struggle.

Local Businesses Come Together To Host Donation Drives For Local Military Nonprofit

By Libby Hopkins

Supporting locals and shopping local are what makes the Brandon community great. Many of the residents in the community are local business owners as well and they believe strongly in supporting locals, but the support doesn’t stop at business; it also means supporting local nonprofits. Isabella Rosal is the managing director and co-founder of Tea, Bowls and Desserts Café in Riverview and Sheila Rivera-Alba is the manager of The Salt Grotto in Valrico. Both women decided to do a donation drive for The Stano Foundation, which is a local military nonprofit that sends care packages to service members all over the world. “As a veteran-owned business, we know how it is to be out there as we have lived overseas as a family and being as a service-member on sea duty,” Rosal said. “This is the least we can do to make our service members feel the support, if not, the company that they are not alone.” Rivera-Alba wanted to do a donation drive for The Stano Foundation because she is a family member of a local veteran. “As a family member of a veteran, I have always [loved] to support the military and military families,” Rivera-Alba said. “In our business we cater to many military families and helping this foundation is our way to say,

If you bring three or more of these items to The Salt Grotto during the month of September, RiveraAlba will give you 15 percent off of your same-day product purchase or service at The Salt Grotto. The Salt Grotto promotion will end on Monday, September 30. If you bring two of the items mentioned in this story to Tea, Bowls and Desserts Café in Riverview from Sunday-Monday, September 22-30, Rosal will give you a free classic tea drink. All the items collected at both businesses will be used for the care packages The Stano Foundation sends to service members during the upcoming holidays. A New Senior Community Choir Seeking Singers

A new senior community choir is seeking singers with all levels of singing experience. ‘Joyful Voices’ will hold its first rehearsal on Monday, September 16 at 1:30 p.m. This senior community choir was created for older adults who have a love of music and a desire to sing. “Singing has a way of lifting spirits and stimulating memories,” stated the choir’s music director Janet Formato. The idea for the senior community choir came as a result of a number of residents at The Bridges who love to sing. Executive Director, Donna Steiermann, is excited about the choir. “In addition to a number of our residents, we anticipate 20 or so seniors from the greater Brandon/Riverview area to join us. We especially welcome those with mild cognitive impairment,” explained Steiermann. Studies have proven that singing with others provides benefits, such as managing stress, alleviating pain, increasing happiness and establishing friendships. Sixty minute rehearsals will be held

VSL’s Annual Harvest Dinner & Auction

A new activity this year for GFWC Valrico Service League, Inc. (VSL) members was making mats out of recycled plastic bags that were gifts to the homeless in the community. Children helping on the project learned about recycling and were amazed that plastic bags we throw out could make something so helpful and liked making those in need more comfortable.

The group's main fundraiser for the year is the 2019 Harvest Dinner & Auction to be held Sunday, November 3 at Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Dr. in Brandon. Strawberry Crest Chargers Strawberry Crest: The Chargers are off to a great start in Phillip Prior’s first season as head coach, as they matched last season’s win total in week one by defeating Leto 20-6. The rebuild of the program is underway. Senior Caleb Goodson is the starting quarterback for Crest. He had a good game against Leto, completing six of seven pass attempts for 63 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 10 times for 45 yards and a touchdown. Prior believes that Goodson can manage their offense and make good decisions to protect the football, and likes the QB's willingness to learn. The Chargers run a pro-style offense and are committed to running the football. Other key players include senior offensive lineman Ben Gude, senior lineman Jonah Spivey, senior offensive line-

man Jose Gonzalez, junior defensive lineman Sebastian Fernandes, junior linebacker Jake Craig and junior receivers Kadin Durgan and Hunter Wilkinson. Senior running back DJ Brannon rushed the ball 10 times for 62 yards and a touchdown, while adding one reception for eight yards against Leto. Prior thinks that his team’s strength will be his front seven on offense and defense. The young, fairly inexperienced team will have to make quick adjustments on the fly as they have had to learn new offensive and defensive schemes a couple of weeks before the season started. The Chargers have one of the tougher schedules in Hillsborough County, as they will have to face Kathleen, Lakeland, Plant City, Durant and Bloomingdale. Prior wants his team to compete each game and each rep, and improvement will come along the way.

Armwood Hawks Armwood: The Hawks are out for revenge after losing for the second straight season in the 6A State Championship to Northwestern (Miami). They are off to a great start in 2019, dismantling Plant 38-3 in their opener. Nobody, not even the Hawks, thought the score of that game would be so lopsided. The much anticipated matchup between the two most dominant programs in Hillsborough County usually comes down to the final possessions of the game. Junior Cam’ron Ransom is the starting quarterback for Armwood this season. The lefty dual-threat QB went five for seven for 188 yards and two touchdowns in the air and also ran for a touchdown. Star junior receiver/running back Charles Montgomery has four receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown in his Armwood debut. The Bloomingdale transfer played several positions for the Bulls last season, including at quarterback, where he filled in for an injured team-

mate and won the first two playoffs games in the school’s history. Last season, he ran the ball 121 times for 864 yards and 13 touchdowns and also caught 16 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns. Montgomery has several Division 1 offers, including Ohio State, Alabama, Bowling Green, Florida International, Iowa State and Maryland. He adds another big-play threat to an already loaded spread offense. Other key players include Under Armor All-American, junior receiver Agiye Hall, who had a 78-yard touchdown pass against Plant, senior 3-star running back Eric Wilson, senior offensive lineman and Georgia State University commit Jeff Miller and senior defensive tackle Clyde Pinder Jr., to name a few. The sky is the limit for Armwood this season. They will make a deep playoff run like they always do and will compete for a state title. It’ll be championship or bust as usual for the Hawks.

Durant Cougars Durant: The Cougars are looking for a bounce-back season after going 3-7 in 2018. They are led by Head Coach Mike Gottman, who is in his 17th season at Durant. The offense will be run by senior quarterback and team captain Sean Williams, who started last year as well. Williams was efficient in the Cougars’ dominating 42-6 win against King in their opener. He threw for one touchdown and also ran the ball four times for 27 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Gottman said that the team captain is a smart, gritty, quick dual-threat QB that uses both his arms and legs to get the job done. He is a proven leader as well as a winner. About 10 different players carried the ball in game one for this run-heavy flexbone triple-option offense that uses some of the same principles as Army and Navy. Other key players include junior guard/defensive tackle and team captain Wyatt Lawson, junior linebacker and team captain Josh Cannon, junior safety/corner/receiver Aashton Kirkland and

senior defensive end Bradley Guasto. Coach Gottman believes that his team’s major strength will be their chemistry. He thinks that their kicking game has improved and can make a difference this year. Senior kicker/punter Edgar Posadas is playing football for the first time, but has potential with a strong leg. They will have to overcome key injuries to starting tight end Nate Brennan and starting linebacker Luke Rawlins, who is out for the season with a torn ACL that was suffered in the Lake Gibson preseason game. Durant has a tough schedule this season, having to face 2018 playoff teams such as Kathleen, Bloomingdale, Lakeland and Plant City. The rest of the games on the schedule are very winnable for the very young and fairly inexperienced Cougars. Assuming that they lose those four tough games, which they are most certainly capable of winning, they will most likely win five or six games in 2019, improving on last season’s record.

Bloomingdale Bulls The Bulls are coming off their best ever season, in which they won their first two playoff games in school history and had an overall record of 11-2. They reached the regional finals for the first time, losing to football powerhouse Venice. The Bulls were very competitive against Venice, leading the game at the half. Bloomingdale is quickly becoming one of the elite football programs in Hillsborough County after being one of the worst for several years. This is partly due to Coach Max Warner who had great success in his three seasons as head coach, improving every season. Warner recently left to the program to take over as the Quarterbacks Coach at Bowling Green and has been replaced by Jake Coulson, who was the defensive coordinator for Bloomingdale last season. Coulson had great success in his first year, leading a defense that gave up less than a touchdown per game and did not give up a point until the fifth game of the season, while posting six total shutouts. This 2019 Bulls squad is full of talented players that are committed to play college football. They will return

key players such as senior quarterback Lance Alderson, senior running back Dominic Gonnella (North Dakota State commit), senior defensive tackle/tight end Quinton McCoy (Illinois commit), senior lineman Conner Pouchie, senior wide receiver and defensive back AJ Moss (North Dakota State commit), senior linebacker Gabe Jones (Davidson commit), senior wide receiver Maurice Frost, Jr. (Navy commit), junior inside linebacker Jamarion Neal and junior linebacker/running back Wa’myron Howard. The Bulls, in recent years, have run a pass-happy spread offense, boasting several talented skilled position players that have gone on to play at the next level. They will need to find their identity on offense, with the offensive line losing several key players from last season. Coach Coulson thinks that team speed will be a major strength for the Bulls. They will have their work cut out for them this season, as they have one of the toughest schedules in Hillsborough County, in which they will have to face Armwood, Durant, Plant, Plant City, Tampa Bay Tech and Lakeland.

Karen Hall Exhibits Art Work At Bruton Memorial Library

Plant City resident and artist, Karen Hall, has an exhibit of her work on display at the Bruton Memorial Library in Plant City. The exhibit can be seen now through the end of September.

The September exhibit at the Bruton Memorial Library in downtown Plant City is a lovely collection of paintings by local artist, Karen Hall. Although Hall is a relatively new artist, she has put together a fine exhibit of her work. You can view the exhibit at any time during the library’s normal operating hours. According to Hall, “The subject of my show is Nature and Animals. I like to think of the saying ‘Over the river and through the woods’ to describe the exhibit.” Hall’s medium of choice is acrylic. She has dabbled in pouring paints and has done some paintings and projects using this. Hall’s exhibit is a collection of 12 pieces, large and small. The pieces are varied and quite pleasing to the eye. Some of the pieces are framed, some are on wood and one is even on burlap. There are landscapes, animal paintings, and one of strawberries. There is a mixed media piece of a seahorse. The paintings in the exhibit depict different seasons and different places. Hall said, “I want the community to appreciate the nature, natural flora

and animals that abound in Florida through my art.” The artwork in Hall’s exhibit shows nice attention to detail, good use of color and excel-
