Valdes Takes Zoom Meetings To A Whole New Level With Award-Worthy Costumes
By Kelly Wise Valdes
Kelly Valdes has been dressing up in costumes for her work video meetings for nearly four weeks, she’s also a contributor to the Osprey Observer and Christian Voice Monthly.
So, it happened. A few weeks after I was sent home to work remotely, my boss tells our team he wants us to participate in daily video meetings and the problem is, well, I didn’t want to. Most of the male coworkers didn’t have a problem with it because, after all, they can roll out of bed and throw on a ball cap. While working from home, I hadn’t put on makeup for weeks, I’d been wearing yoga outfits and my hair was always in a ponytail. What in the world was I going to do? I complained to my husband and he jokingly replied, “Why don’t you wear a costume?” And that’s when the ball started rolling. Luckily, we had a few old Halloween costumes in our closets, so I pulled out the costume for the first meeting—none other than the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,
Elvis Presley. When the camera came on the next day, my teammates seemed slightly amused by my costume. At least I hoped so. Apparently, it was unexpected to have Elvis attend the meeting. The next day was Janis Joplin, followed by Elton John. Now, the co-workers were zooming to see who would be at the meeting each day. I started getting text messages with suggestions of costumes and ideas. I kept thinking my boss would soon stop the daily meetings and maybe have a weekly meeting instead; however, it appeared he was continuing the meetings to see how long I could continue to find costumes. We are now entering week four and I’ve somehow managed to find a costume every day, mostly putting together things I can find around
the house. My co-workers have now been in meetings with Richard Simmons, Hulk Hogan, Flo from Progressive, Audrey Hepburn, Bob Ross, Princess Leia and the Grinch, just to name a few. Quarantine can certainly stir creativity. But, dressing up in full-costume isn’t necessary to create comradery for a video meeting. After speaking to other people looking for fun things to do during this time of separation, I’ve seen people becoming creative in ways that just didn’t happen while in the office. Some examples of fun things to consider: Crazy socks day, funny coffee mug day, favorite sports team day, show-off-your-pet day, share a picture of your favorite vacation, funny hat day, concert t-shirt day and crazy hair day. I even heard that one team
shared how many toilet paper rolls they had left in the house. Virtual team bonding increases employee motivation and collaboration. During this time of separation, having virtual fun activities makes employees feel connected and valued, and ultimately makes them highly dedicated to their organization. To quote author Steve Goodier from his book One Minute Can Change A Life, “Humor can make a serious difference. In the workplace, at home, in all areas of life – looking for a reason to laugh is necessary. A sense of humor helps us to get through the dull times, cope with the difficult times, enjoy the good times and manage the scary times.” If you are looking for some fun ideas, visit https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/2020/03/16/.

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” —Nelson Mandela Congratulations are in order for this year’s area valedictorians and salutatorians from our area high school. These students have put in the hard work, the dedication and shown the drive to be the best of the best of their high school graduating class. And now, due to the pandemic and virtual classes ending the 2020 school year, they become the class high school seniors who gradated remotely. We wish these students the absolute best of luck in their college careers and in their future and know that they will never forget graduating during a worldwide coronavirus quarantine. As of today, the school district has released a tentative alternative graduation date and the county website lists the planned schedule. The first set would be held on July 13, with the last scheduled for July 21. The ceremonies would be held at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Please keep an eye on the district site for confirmation of dates and times. https://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/ Please join us in congratulating all of the Hillsborough County seniors and those who are the top of their class! An Open Letter From Durant HS Co-Valedictorian Dear fellow community members, High school was a time that I will forever treasure in my heart. Like most freshmen, I walked through the doors of Durant anxious and overwhelmed by everything that would be in store for me over four years. However, I would not have traded any memory, stressful exam or experience for the world. I had not always strived to be in this position; in fact, my original goal was to graduate in the top 10 of my class because of a silly bet I had made with my mom when I was merely 6 years old. My ambitions began changing towards the end of my sophomore year, though, as I began inching my way closer to the position of valedictorian. As I began to undertake tougher classes, calculating my GPA and the credits I would need to obtain a higher class rank, I never lost my support system and these people were the ones who kept me enduring through this race. My coursework increased, but I never lost sight of myself or the values I held true to my heart because of the wonderful people that surrounded me. Even as I pushed myself to become valedictorian, I wanted to maintain balance in my life because there is not a second chance to have the ‘high school experience.’ If there is one lesson that was brought to my attention during these four years, it is that enjoying what you do is more important than doing what others expect you to do. Roaming those halls for years, I too often saw people who would conform to the ideas of how others viewed them instead of discovering who they truly were. For anyone entering high school, still in high school, or about to leave high school, those years will seem to be the most defining moments of your life, and they just may be. But, do not let others define you or your happiness; allow yourself to discover your own joys and passions. Durant High School became my second home and my fellow Cougars will always be in my heart.
An Open Letter From Strawberry Crest HS Valedictorian Dear fellow community members, With much gratitude honor and pride, I have learned very much during my scholastic journey at Strawberry Crest due to the kindness, thoughtfulness and perseverance of our dedicated teachers as they imparted knowledge, life lessons and provided the nourishment that made my mind fertile to grow the skills I would need in the future for the pursuit of the acquisition of knowledge. Our teachers provided wholesome ambience conducive to learning book knowledge and social skills that has fermented and matured my mind to better understanding humanity and its complex shapes, forms and nuances. I am so fortunate to be in a country with ability, stability and opportunity, through which I was chosen to attend Harvard Summer School at 16 in my junior year. Plus, I was tripled enrolled at FLVS, HCC and USF. My GPA will be in the high 9 after all grades are calculated, which will set the base camp at the foothills to scale the challenges of life so that I can reach to any summit that I will aspire too. Volunteering at Moffitt Cancer Center and Feeding America allowed me to give back to our wonderful community. Remember as Polonius—a character in Shakespeare’s Hamlet—concluded: be true to yourself and, as night follows day, you will not be false to anyone. To my fellow graduates, this is our annus mirabilis, a Latin phrase which means “our wonderful, miraculous and amazing year.”

Bloomingdale Girls Basketball Starter Follows Family Tradition As Standout Player COVID-19 has affected many people’s daily lives and routines. There are many cons of the pandemic, but there are some benefits to having more free time, such as the ability to spend more time with your loved ones. Bloomingdale basketball player Kyrstin Wolff and her mom, Dawn Wolff, have taken advantage of this rare opportunity. Dawn played college basketball for Loyola University in Chicago. Many members of her family members have played the game as well, including her father, who played semi-pro. Now her daughter, Kyrstin, has taken up the family tradition as well, by her own choice. As a freshman at Bloomingdale, Kyrstin averaged six points per game to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks per game while starting at center. This comes as a pleasant surprise for Kyrstin, who got cut as a sixth grader from her middle school team a few years ago. Kyrstin didn’t let that hinder her. She decided to work as the team manager that same season to learn the playbook, as well as hone her skills. She didn’t want to feel that same way again, so she used that as her main motivation to get better. Her hard work all paid off in the end, as she became a starter for her

She also has a hoop in her driveway and has worked out in her garage with their “makeshift CrossFit gym.” Dawn has also been running and working out with Kyrstin while teaching her everything she knows about the game. Their body type and style of play is so similar that it’s almost uncanny. Kyrstin also wears the same number 42 that her mother and grandfather both wore. Dawn calls Kyrstin her “mini-me.” The training will continue throughout the summer for the Wolffs. They normally would be entrenched in the travel ball summer season at this time. Kyrstin plays for the Compound travel team, and Dawn is the assistant coach. They may choose not to participate due to concerns over the virus. She is also missing out on the high school spring ball season and on coaching summer basketball camps at the high school. Kyrstin’s goals are to become ranked in the state and county basketball rankings. She wants to come back to school as a different player, because she knows that her best is yet to come.
