Crime Stoppers Offers Cash Reward For Information On Tampa Bay's First Friday's Fugitives Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay’s latest public alert began with two simple questions: Can you use some extra cash? Do you know where a wanted fugitive is hiding? The release of the list of five top fugitives at the start of the first Friday of each month by Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay Law Enforcement Coordinator Master Deputy Kelly McLaren is all about getting criminals off the street as soon as possible. “For one thing, we want to get the attention of the public, but most importantly its all about catching these dangerous fugitives,” McLaren said, adding, “Of course, people can always use some extra cash.” The fugitives that the agency is highlighting this month by asking the public's assistance in getting them into custody are just the five most recent or most wanted out of nearly 50 suspects currently posted on the agency’s website dating all the way back to 2013.

Crime Stoppers encourages members of the community to assist local law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime by overcoming the two key elements that inhibit community involvement: fear and apathy. The public may contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-873TIPS(8477), report anonymously online at www.crimestopperstb.com, or send in a mobile tip using its P3 Tips Mobile Application, which is a free download for iPhones and Droids. Crime Stoppers must be contacted first in order to be eligible for a cash reward. The five fugitives listed for the month of May are listed to the right. To view other wanted fugitives, visit www.crimestopperstb.com and click on the "Wanted Suspects" link. For additional information regarding Crime Stoppers, call Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay Law Enforcement Coordinator Master Deputy Kelly McLaren at 318-5604 or email kmclaren@hcso.tampa.fl.us.

Local Special Needs Students Connect With Nature at Medard Park A small group of students from Pepin Academies got a chance to get up close and personal with nature earlier this month during a morning trip to Medard Park. Pepin Academies are tuition-free charter schools committed to creating professional learning communities through practices and programs that meet the needs of students with learning disabilities. The field trip, which involved learning about the park, its 700-acre reservoir, as well as many of the creatures that the park is known for in and out of the water, was possible thanks to the generous and giving A group of special needs students from Pepin spirit of Pepin Academies Academies are joined by local volunteers during a recent field trip at Medard Park. The event allowed and Hillsborough County’s the students to experience nature and learn about 4H Club Tech Wizard menthemselves, their interests, and the great outdoors. tor program volunteer, Paula Retter, who also own fishing vessels for the group to works for the Rotary’s Camp Florida in take voyages. Of course for the small group of Pepin students spending a couple of hours at the park under Retter’s supervision and the support of the members of the community is a whole new experience. “Today these students learned a bit more about life, hands on skills not to mention team work,” said Retter, whose 18-year-old daughter, Carissa is diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. Proving her moms point, Carissa was happy to share her take on the field trip, especially her favorite part of seeing the alligators and being out on the water with Captain Gore. “I wasn't scared,” she said excitedly. “I loved it and I would like to do it again.” Today, Pepin Academies has grown to serve over 850 students with a main campus in Tampa, a campus in Riverview and its latest addition in New Port Richey. Sheriff’s Office Celebrates Law Enforcement History 170 Years In The Making

By Tamas Mondovics

Standing in front of a large crowd with a giant pair of scissors at hand, Sheriff David Gee officially cut the ribbon on the front doors of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) History Center, located at 2001 N. 19th St. on the corner of Ninth Avenue and 19th Street in Ybor City. The opening of the History Center earlier this month was more than just an outlet to display the various aspects of sheriff's office history. To those that worked on the project, making the museum a reality was also a celebration of 170 years of law enforcement excellence. The facility will now showcase the evolution of the Department of Detention Services, historical uniforms, law enforcement technologies and equipment, and a Fallen Heroes room, in addition to an extensive badge collection and hundreds of photographs. "We've been diligently working to make this a reality," Deputy Jerry Carey said just before Gee cut the ribbon. Carey emphasized that the History Center is an opportunity to interact with the community when he said, “It is a great place for people to visit and to share their experiences.” First inside the renovated and tastefully decorated building, Gee spoke proudly about the making and seeing the project become a reality as he welcomed local residents, friends, and fellow officers along with members of the media. “It is neat to see this project now

ready to be enjoyed by the community as it is a great reflection on the history of Hillsborough County,” Gee said, adding that over the years artifacts and photographs, old uniforms, equipment, badges and jail logs have just been laying around or being collected, but are now on display. To gather 170 years of history and pack them into an approximately 1,200 sq. ft. museum was not an easy task, but thanks to a dedicated team of retired and current deputies led by HCSO Captain Jim Bradford, it is now a part of HCSO’s

history. “The project took five years and everyone who had something to share was more than willing to contribute,” Bradford said. “We are very pleased with how the center turned out and are looking forward to adding to the collection and to our County’s law enforcement history.” The opening celebration would not have been complete without the presence of many who have been making history including former HCSO Major Ron Hartley, who worked for the Sheriff's

Office for four decades. As he made his way through the Center, Hartley, 64, visibly took delight in recognizing old friends and recalling various incidents triggered by the photographs scattered throughout the various rooms. “Things were a bit different back then,” Hartley said, adding, “Times have sure changed, over the years.” Perhaps one of the most sobering display was the Fallen Heroes room, featuring Sergeant Ben P. Wilder, Jr., who was killed while making an arrest in July, 1962. Sgt. Wilder’s uniform—donated to the museum by his widow 87-year-old Dorothy Wilder Alster,—is now on display behind glass. Wilder was 39 years old. “I am glad that I was able to donate this uniform to the museum,” Dorothy said. “The Sheriff’s Office has done a wonderful job of making sure that Ben is remembered.” HCSO hopes to continue collecting artifacts and to bring new displays to the center in the future. The history center is open Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information about the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, visit www.hcso.tampa.fl.us.

Starting A Neighborhood Watch It’s not hard to start a Neighborhood Watch program in your HOA community, but it does take some time and effort. In this article, we will provide a few tips on how your HOA can begin to implement a program.

Step 1: Research

Visit different National Neighborhood Watch program websites to find information to help you get started such as www.nnw.org, This website has plenty of materials for your HOA community to use. In addition to finding information online, determine the area you want to organize. The whole neighborhood? If you have a larger neighborhood, more than 150 homes, you might want to divide the area into two watch programs. Use the HOA Board’s resources to reach out to the community members to see who would like to volunteer for the Neighborhood Watch program. A good ratio of volunteers is one person for every eight to 10 households. The HOA board can determine a night to present their Neighborhood Watch plan to inform the community of the program. Another idea is to set up a watch website. This will make it easier to coordinate and communicate with volunteers and residents.

Step 2: Contact The Sheriff’s Office

We recommend contacting your local

Volume 15, Issue 6

Bloomingdale/ FishHawk Edition

sheriff’s office to schedule guest speakers at your Neighborhood Watch presentation. The best way to get the word out to residents about the presentation is to have your neighbor volunteers distribute invitations door to door.

Step 3: Prepare A Neighborhood Map

Prepare a Neighborhood Watch map that shows the entire area involved in the watch program. Show names, phone numbers, and street numbers of each household.

Step 4: The Presentation

At the community presentation, you will identify all resident concerns and develop an action plan. Go over crime prevention techniques and how to report any suspicious activity. This is where neighbors can meet each other and establish a communication network (i.e., a telephone tree).

Step 5: Keep Everyone’s Interest

It can be hard to keep everyone interested in a project after its initial start. You want residents to keep vigilance with the Neighborhood Watch Program. There are a few ways to keep everyone involved, such as planning neighborhood outings, meetings, summer picnics, and a monthly Neighborhood Watch Newsletter. Does your HOA community have a Neighborhood Watch Program? Email nicoleh@ospreyobserver.com to be featured in next month’s edition.

Local Star Wars Enthusiast Creates Lightsabers, Plans To Help The Blind Paul Rubino has been a fan of Star Wars for a long time. He became so fascinated with lightsabers that he began researching how they were made and ended up teaching himself how to make them. He finished his first lightsaber in September and started showing them to people. Soon he was getting requests for purchases. During this time, Rubino realized that he could take his hobby and turn it into something that he could use to help people. He is still searching for the right path to use his gift for the Kingdom of God, but he’s confident that God gives us our skills to bring glory and honor to Him. Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki, defines a lightsaber as, “a weapon used by the Jedi and the Sith. Lightsabers consisted of a plasma blade, powered by a kyber crystal and usually emitted from a metallic hilt.” Rubino’s lightsabers do not have plasma blades or crystals, but he said that his lighting and sound effects are ten times better than those that can be purchased in the toy section. “They have high-end sound boards that handle all the sounds and lighting. They are crazy bright and are made for full-contact fighting. Ones that are fully functioning with sound start in the $300s. They are made for props or for Star Wars enthusiasts. It’s like a really expensive adult toy,” Rubino said. The hilts are made out of aircraft grade aluminum. The blade’s material uses polycarbonate, which is the same material that hockey masks are made out of.

Rubino likes to have his evening devotionals at Starbucks. He has gotten in the habit of bringing one of his lightsabers with him; he’s found that this is a good way to start conversations with people. During one of those nights, he met some students from the Refuge, which is the college ministry at Bell Shoals Baptist Church. Through this connection, he was put in touch with a man who was interested in having a custom lightsaber built. Rubino went to the man’s house to discuss the specifications and was introduced to an idea that he had never considered before. “He is blind. Completely. He wants me to make him a guide stick lightsaber. It’s going to be a lightsaber that is long enough to be used as a walking guide stick and it’s going to have the same functionality as a lightsaber. So that anyone who is looking around – it’s going to look like they’re swinging a lightsaber Local Star Wars enthusiast Paul Rubino poses with one of around. It will make swing his lightsabers that he creates. sounds, and when they “They’re meant to be fun. on the hilt so it’s easy to hold,” Rubino said. While he was at the apartment, the man’s roommate said he wants one, as well. His roommate is also blind. Then he met a young woman at church who is about to marry, who also happens to be blind. He started talking to her and she admitted that she would like one, too, if it all works out. “For people who can still see some color and some light, this will help them, because they are so light. They will light things up around them. For safety reasons, if there’s a blind person walking at night, or on campus walking back to their dorm, you have a lit-up lightsaber. It will be super easy for cars because you have this giant 6-foot aura of light around you,” he said. If the parts are available, Rubino is positive that he can build one within a couple of days to a week. He also works full-time job at Publix and parttime in the Worship Ministry at FishHawk Fellowship, so right now he is treating the lightsabers as a passionate hobby. The lightsabers are powered by a high power LED in the hilt that can range from 3 watts up to 12 watts. Rubino said that they are blindingly light. Soundboards can be added to create different sound effects. Lighting effects can also be customized. There are limitless possibilities. For those interested in contacting Rubino, he can be reached on Facebook at www.facebook.com/lightbringersabers. His email is LightbringerSabers@gmail.com.

Mosaic’s Streamsong Offers Secluded Getaway Close To Home Nestled amongst the natural terrain of the seemingly untouched Central Florida wilds lies a surprise slice of award-winning golfer’s paradise nestled amongst 16,000 acres of reclaimed Mosaic property, called Streamsong. The Resort, a new 216-room, resort and spa with world class accommodations and two of the top golf courses in the state, was also the host of the 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball tournament hosted by the USGA in May. Streamsong is described as a retreat that is the ultimate escape for relaxation, enrichment and rejuvenation and is developed by The Mosaic Company— the world’s leading producer and marketer of phosphate-based crop nutrients. Recognized the world over as an innovator in its field, Mosaic embraces its mission of helping the world grow the food it needs. With more than 280,000 acres under direct ownership, Mosaic is also one of Florida’s largest landowners, and has owned Streamsong’s 16,000 acres of land in Polk County for more than 50 years. In keeping with its commitment to land stewardship, Mosaic has reclaimed many of its former mining areas for public recreational or environmental uses. Located in Central Florida, 90 minutes from Orlando and 60 minutes from Tampa, and just 40 minutes from the Brandon area, Streamsong Resort offers

The minute guests enter the resort, senses are met by a specially-designed lemon-grass scent, unique to Streamsong Resort. “By our very nature, we offer guests a completely different experience from any other resort in the state - and our guests love it,” said Marketing Manager, Jacqueline Bohmer de Garcia. The resort was designed by Alfonso Architects, Inc. who was involved in designing Tampa International Airport, and is now working on the Museum of American Arts and Crafts Movement in Ste Petersburg that is expected to open in 2017. Golf is a major attraction for many Streamsong guests. The resort can host small intimate groups and world-class tournaments, events, and outings with PGA-certified staff, and can handle up to 300 golfers. According to Bohmer de Garcia, the resort also offers much for the non-golfer, including guided bass fishing excursions, sporting clays and archery, walking trails,

and the grotto style spa, AcquaPietra, which gives a higher level of relaxation. The spa includes many different services like therapeutic water treatments with unique pool experiences and a relaxation water treatment and treatment rooms dedicated to personalized services like massages and facials. Services also include pedicures, manicures, and hair. “The resort also features a lakeside infinity pool, hiking trail, and tennis courts as well as special seasonal dining events like bourbon pairing dinners,” said Bohmer de Garcia, “Non-golfers will not be bored at Streamsong.” Businesses are offered space for meetings and the resort offers space for events ranging from business to wedding. The resort also offers beautiful and modern accommodations for guests that include suites and guestrooms in the Lodge and Clubhouse. Four dining options are offered at Restaurant Fifty-Nine, Sotto Terra, P2O5, and Fragmentary Blue, a top floor restaurant with resort overlook patio. All restaurants are overseen by Executive Chef Michael Ford with four other chefs to run each restaurant and add their own flair to different food items they serve. “Guests know they can truly relax at Streamsong and that our team will go out of their way to make sure they get the most out of their time with us,” said Bohmer de Garcia. REVAMPED 2017 ELANTRA IS A NO-BRAINER

This one is pretty much an all-new Elantra. Forget the previous power trains. The compact car is equipped with an allnew 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder engine, which develops out 147 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 132 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm; or the 1.4-liter turbocharged GDI 4-cylinder putting out 128 hp at 5,500 rpm and 156 lbs.-ft. of torque at 3,700 rpm. Transmission choices for the SE, Eco and Limited trims include a sixspeed manual or auto, and a sevenspeed. Normal, eco and sport are the drive modes in the 0.27 drag-coefficient car. Hyundai’s familiar hexagonal grille with chrome accents and projector headlights adorns the exterior fascia. Length is up by 0.8 inches and width increases by 1 inch from its predecessor. Unibody improvements include use of additional high-strength steel, enhanced suspension, more vertical damper and an isolated sub-frame to reduce noise. The attrac-

tive cabin offers such standard amenities as a/c, cloth seats, tilt/telescopic steering, power windows, outside mirrors and door locks, 60/40 rear seat, six-way adjustable driver’s seat, and a 3.5-in. LCD instrument cluster. Trunk volume is a passable 14.4 cubic feet though total interior volume at 110.2 cubic feet is comparable to the midsize Cadillac CTS sedan. Dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, driver knee airbag, four-wheel antilock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist, front/rear crumple zones, Electronic Stability and Traction Control, front seatbelt pretensioners, remote keyless entry and tire pressure monitoring system are standard. But the Elantra now comes with several advanced safety technology features like smart cruise control, lane departure and lane keep assist, blind spot monitor, and rear cross traffic alert, all for an extra cost. The base manual SE starts at $17,150, ($100 less than outgoing model) the auto goes for $18,150 and the Limited from $22,350. The agile, fun-to-drive and gas-sipper Elantra is the perfect car for a daily roundabout. Folks, this is a no-brainer. Test drive the Elantra at Brandon Hyundai, 9915 E. Adamo Dr. in Tampa.

Tampa Bay Readies For 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season With Practices, Events By Tamas Mondovics Each May, ahead of the upcoming hurricane season, (June 1 through November 30) Tampa Bay area residents get a boost in hurricane awareness with one simple underlying message, “It only takes one storm to change your life and community.” The above warning, which highlights the destructive nature of tropical cyclones and the need to be prepared, is as serious as ever. Florida has been spared of a serious hurricane related weather event for more than a decade. Some members of the local, regional and state emergency agencies are yet to experience the effects of a dangerous storm from start to finish. To make sure the next weather event does not catch anyone by surprise, Hillsborough County officials arranged for a number of events during Hurricane Awareness Week (May 15-21) to help prepare for the season, including the first on the roster, the annual Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo held each year at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). The event drew hundreds of residents and answered visitors’ questions, and also shared the expertise of meteorologists from Tampa Bay area TV station and the National Weather Service, as well as local disaster response experts.

The scenario focused on events and actions prior to landfall, including evacuations. While Cook was pleased with how the test went and the way everyone responded, he has acknowledged that the real test of readiness is yet to come. “We prepare the same way no matter what,” Cook said As part of the annual hurricane exercise, Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management director Preston D. Authentic German Food And Music At Old Castle Restaurant

By Samantha R. Evensen

Old Castle Restaurant offers authentic German food and traditional German music at its restaurant in Sun City.

This wonderfully authentic, family owned and operated restaurant located at 3830 Sun City Center Boulevard will have you dancing in your lederhosen. Owner Manuela Tscheu, originally from Berlin, Germany came to the states in 2005 with the dream of recreating a piece of home. In 2006, she established Old Castle Restaurant, fashioned after the original “Burg Schanke” in Berlin. She later met and married her husband Stuart Stubbins, a native of Frankfurt, Germany. Together this outgoing and ambitious duo has created a dining experience you will not soon forget. Open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, the family prides themselves on homemade German recipes, made in house, the bread dumplings, sauerkraut, schnitzel, bratwurst, and warm apple

strudel are sure to satisfy. Among the many crowd pleasers, a favorite is “Hunter’s Schnitzel” made from your choice of meat, homemade spatzel and creamy mushroom sauce. They have seasonal menu items and specials as well as a great selection of German beers and homemade sangria. There is live traditional German music every Tuesday and Saturday in the off season, and when the season starts after the first weekend in October, they host an additional night of entertainment. “People come from near and far to get the best German food this side of the Atlantic,” said Stuart. This old world style German restaurant will afford you an evening of good food and entertainment. Reservations are accepted and customer feedback is always welcomed. Old Castle Restaurant also caters and will accommodate private parties. To checkout the menu or for more information about the restaurant, call 633 - 3331 or visit on Facebook.

LISA HART MONICA RIVERA, M.D.

Lynn Barber, Hillsborough County Extension Firebush, Scarletbush, Hamelia patens, is a native, large shrub that performs well in central and south Florida, zones 9-11. It is fast growing and can reach a height of 5-20 ft. and spread of 5-8 ft. It tolerates any soil pH from 4.5-8.0. Well drained to medium drained soil moisture is needed. Any soil texture works, from clay loam to sandy loam, from sand to sandy clay. Firebush has medium drought tolerance and low to no salt tolerance. It performs best in partial shade and does well in full sun or partial sun/partial shade. This shrub produces orange/red flowers year-round and attracts butterflies, birds, bees and hummingbirds and a lot of them. The foliage is more attractive in the shade, but this plant flowers best in the sun. Either way, this plant is a beautiful landscape addition. Firebush dies back in freezes but returns in the spring. Ihave several small Firebush in my home landscape that I would like to give to a good home. So, if you are interested in a Firebush plant for your landscape,

email me at barberL@hillsboroughcounty.org. The first five emails I receive will be winners. If you are a winner, I will email you to let you know. You need to pick up the plant at our office in Seffner within one week after this article is published in the Osprey Observer. We hope you will stop by the Extension office to view The Bette S. Walker Discovery Garden, our perennial garden and to see our Firebush. Morrisa Morris said, “I just love my Firebush. I cringe every time my daughter prunes it, but the great news is that it keeps coming back even better than it was before.” Take time for a nice glass of iced tea and a good book (gardening, of course) on your front porch or lanai. Life’s too short not to garden. For assistance with horticultural questions, call 744-5519 or visit us at the UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, 5339 C.R. 579 in Seffner. More gardening information is available at hillsborough.ifas.ufl.edu and edis.ifas.ufl.edu. Remember to reuse, reduce and recycle.

AJ’s Fine Wines & Liquor

The cultivation of the domesticated grape began 6,000–8,000 years ago in the Near East. Yeast, one of the earliest domesticated microorganisms, occurs naturally on the skins of grapes, leading to the innovation of alcoholic drinks such as wine. The earliest archeological evidence for a dominant position of wine-making in human culture dates from 8,000 years ago in Georgia. The oldest known winery was found in Armenia, dating to around 4,000 BC. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics record the cultivation of purple grapes, and history attests to the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, and Romans growing purple grapes for both eating and wine production. Did you know that the Concord grape, which produces the grape juice and jelly so many of us grew up on, gets its name from Concord, Massachusetts. In fact, a 160-year-old original grapevine is still growing. The vine owes its ubiquity to Ephraim Wales Bull, who in 1849 planted upward of 20,000 different seedlings (all native to the rugged New England soil) at his Concord farm, before discovering the perfect, cold-hardy grape. Though Bull's über-fruit gained international fame, he died in near-poverty. His tombstone reads: "He sowed — others reaped." They're still reaping. Each year, more than 400,000 tons of Concord grapes are harvested for the production of jellies and juice. The recipe below is courtesy of Arlene Chuman.

Alafia Elementary Students Collect Awards At Egg Drop Competition & More Alafia Elementary Students Shine At Planetary Lander "Egg Drop" Competition

Last month close to two dozen students from Alafia Elementary School traveled to the Kennedy Space Center to participate in the annual Planetary Lander "Egg Drop" Competition (PLEDC). The event annually challenges students K-12 across Florida to compete for prizes against each other as each team is tasked with designing and building their own lander in which a raw-egg will serve as the payload and must survive a drop of almost 20-ft., just as a real NASA lander would on the Moon, Mars or an Asteroid. It was the first year participating in the competition for Alafia Elementary, which sported several teams led by teachers Jill Brickhaus, Donna Terrell, and Jerry Turner. Each Alafia team came home with a trophy, earning every honor available to an elementary team. Brickhaus Blaster's (Space Monkeys) came in first place, followed by The Fantastic Four in second and The Gator Busters in third. The 6 Beagles captured the Fan Favorite award for Most Creative Lander. “I am extremely proud of the perseverance shown by the students,” said Terrell, a fourth grade teacher at the school. “They were young engineers and scientists, creating multiple iterations of their design and testing the landers until they found what worked best.”

The competition’s website explained that the original competition titled the "Lunar Lander Eggs PRIZE" was initiated by the Earthrise Space Foundation (ESF) and was held in 2009 at the International Space Development Conference in Orlando, and was established to engage middle and high school students in STEM activities. The competition served as a way to introduce the community to ESF's team competing in the Google Lunar X PRIZE, Team Omega Envoy. 7th Annual Fresh Flavors Student Food Tasting Expo

The Hillsborough County Public Schools Student Nutrition Services Department hosted its 7th annual Fresh Flavors - Food for Body and Mind Expo earlier this month at TPepin’s Hospitality Centre. Approximately 200 students from around the district had a chance to taste and rate new menu items for the 20162017 school year menu. “We had every grade level represented by the students who were ready to test the various potential future menu items,” said Tanya Arja with the district communications office. “Twenty-one new menu items were tested, including Gyro Flatbread Sandwich, Funfetti Quinoa Salad, and a Chicken & Pesto Piada.” During the event, students were to rate each item on a scale of “Love It,” “Like It,” or “Dislike It” based on the item’s appearance, smell, and taste. “The purpose of the tasting is to help Student Nutrition Services provide healthy menus that are based on student preferences,” Arja said. This year a group of parents were also invited to be taste testers and participate in a question and answer session about school meal initiatives with Student Nutrition Services General Manager Dr. Mary Kate Harrison. Canine Cabana Launches Fit Paws Fitness Program

By Andria Barrios

Canine Cabana recently launched a new Fit Paws program to help dogs reach and maintain a healthy weight.

New diet and fitness programs are often trending for humans, but what about canines? Angie Frazier and Kendall Duncan, co-owners of Canine Cabana, a local doggie daycare company, made sure dogs wouldn’t be left out, especially since 58 percent of the nation’s pets are overweight. “The physical and mental health of all dogs is just as important as our own. We want all dogs to be in the best overall health so they can live happy, healthy and long lives,” Frazier continues. The Fit Paws program is full of safe and fun exercises that tackle the extra “fluff” on each pooch. Over the course of 20 days, a personal, certified trainer will portion out meals and treats as well as create customized mental and physical exercises

catered to each pet’s individual ability and endurance, allowing for an overall healthier lifestyle. The program also includes daycare, which means dogs can enjoy socializing and playing in addition to shedding some pounds. Each week, the trainer holds consultations with each dog’s owner to discuss challenges and progress. Frazier and Duncan met at Busch Gardens where they served as zookeepers in 1997. Eight years ago, they collaborated to create Canine Cabana, a dog lodging, daycare, grooming and personalized training facility. With over 20 team members, “We are experts in our field. Our team is thoroughly trained in dog language, behavior and animal care, as well as CPR and First Aid. We have constant supervision of all activities and keep the highest staff to dog ratios of any facility,” explains Frazier. Canine Cabana is also open for drop off and pick up seven days a week with full staff, hours and activities each day. For reservations or a free consultation, or for more information, call 6729663 or visit www.caninecabana.biz or www.facebook.com/caninecabanafl/. Canine Cabana is located at 9708 Carr Rd. in Riverview.

Local Photographer Joins National Search For America’s Beautiful Children

As part of Beauty Revived, a photography movement, Momma Got Soul Photography is asking for nominations for beautiful children in the Brandon and Lithia areas to be featured in a national magazine. The beauty of these children will not be measured by their physical beauty. These children will be chosen because of their real beauty, their courage and their countenance. The winner will be given a free photo session with Momma Got Soul Photography and a feature in the August issue of Beauty Revived magazine. Beauty Revived is a movement that celebrates people with real beauty. Photographers donate sessions to these children and their stories are featured in their magazine and on www.beautyrevived.com. Brandon & Armwood High School Classes Of 1986 To Share 30th Reunion Celebration

Students from Academy of Dance Dynamics entertain residents at Brookdale Brandon Community.

During the 1983-1984 school year, Brandon High School was on double session with over 1,200 students enrolled; sophomores had classes in the afternoon while juniors and seniors had classes in the morning. The following school year, Armwood High School opened its doors and many of the Brandon High School sophomores, along with some from Eastlake High School, transferred to Armwood as incoming juniors. Seniors were not required to transfer and there was no Senior class that first year. They will all gather this summer for a shared 30th Reunion to reconnect with friends who went to elementary through

Dance Dynamics took time out of their busy end of the year schedule to share the love of the arts with Brookdale Brandon Community. The group ages range from 7 to 16 years old with multiple levels of dance training. They performed Lyrical, Broadway, Jazz, and Hip Hop. The residents graciously applauded their high energy and passion for dance. This was a wonderful opportunity for our youth to give back to those who have paved the way in the past. The children’s passion and joy brought smiles to the residents. The performers are now focusing on choosing a fun dance or drama camp this summer at the studio. Academy of Dance Dynamics is located at 4383 Lynx Paw Trail in Valrico. Call 655-8277.

The cost is $125 per person and includes a full buffet, open bar and entertainment. A committee of about 10 Brandon and Armwood graduates has been working to plan a fun night for everyone. Visit www.BrandonArmwoodReunion.com for more info or contact Amy Jennings Connors at 727-647-7585.

pre-chewed and forced down their throats Hey Bird Guy! I found a baby bird. like so many of them need. If a well What should I do? -M.W. of Bloomingdale West meaning human tries to force feed a baby I’m asked this frequently every spring. The best chance baby birds have to survive is with its parents, not with human care. If the baby has no feathers, it may have fallen out of the nest. Look around and if you find the nest, you certainly can place the baby gently back in the nest. There is zero truth to the old wives tale that the parent bird will smell human on the chick and abandon it. If the baby you find has feathers, the best thing you can do is leave it alone. I know that sounds harsh but it is the best thing you can do. Odds are very good the parents are nearby and will coax the youngster into cover and teach it to feed. Just because you don’t see the parent doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t in the area. Many birds spend the first two to three days of their lives on the ground. It is in our nature to want to help a baby we perceive to be in danger. Here are a few of the problems in us trying. We don’t know what the baby’s diet requirements are. We don’t know how often it should be fed. We don’t know if the baby should have food placed in front of it or

bird with an eyedropper, it is way too easy to feed it the wrong food or force too much in too deeply. Even if you guess right, how will you teach the bird to forage and feed itself? It is my belief that the worst thing you can do, especially if you have children and are trying to set a good example, is to try and be a nurse to a baby bird. If we accept that the best chance they have to survive is in the care of the parent birds, even if you don’t see the parents for quite a while, you give them the best chance by leaving them alone. Some people want to take babies into a vet or animal rehab facility. While that may seem noble, you can’t know for sure the parents are not still in the picture and by removing the baby bird you are greatly reducing its chances for surviving. Sometimes the best lessons we can teach our children are the tough ones. Explain to them that each parent has to have 10-15 chicks per year just to get two-four of them to survive and continue the species. When the chicks do make it, that is a success and when they don’t the parents will simply try again. It’s nature’s way.

“Lost 31.5 pounds, Size 8 to “0” As a mother of 2 and business owner, I felt as if I had tried everything humanly possible to get in the best shape for my health and overall well-being with the time and resources I had available to me. I had been dedicated to cardio exercise and strength building for years, but was not seeing the results I thought I should be seeing. I decided it was time to go AFTER to the experts.” “I looked at a couple of possibilities, and determined that if I wanted the best results, I needed to go to a proven source of expertise. I had seen RobZ Fitness testimonials and heard about the results and after doing some research on what I should expect and gathering a great deal of courage, I decided to walk in their door. I found RobZ staff to be very welcoming, encouraging and knowledgeable. As hard as I had tried all these years, many of the exercises were incorrect in technique, not enough weight, or just simply not pushing beyond what I thought I was capable of doing.” “The results were fast and furious- I was amazed at how simple the theory of exercise and healthy eating really was, and although not one for pressing myself in the area of physical fitness, I found the benefits FAR outweigh the sweat equity.” “Not only did I surprisingly drop 31.5 lbs of body fat and a BEFORE 14.1% body fat change the first three months (a welcome plus), but lost 19 total inches (6.5” waist and 4” thigh, etc.) and was seeing visible sculpting. I had walked in hoping to tone up, which I did, but found so much more. Rob mentioned at the beginning I was in better shape than 20% of women my age and now I am in better shape than 91% of women. I suffered from migraines since adolescence and being on RobZ plan, I did not have one migraine- which to me, was nothing short of a miracle. The trainers helped me to understand the dynamics behind balancing food intake and how this affected the chemical balance in my system. Maurica, my trainer, was fun and encouraging. I had never looked forward to working out the way I have while working at RobZ with Maurica. The workouts turned out to be the biggest stress relief of my life and the education I received will follow me and motivate me for a lifetime. My only regret is that I did not walk into RobZ sooner! One In Five Motorists Do Not Wear A Seat Belt

Staff Report

In 2014, 21,022 motor vehicle passengers lost their lives. Tragically some of these deaths could have been prevented if the passenger had been wearing a seat belt. Seat belts save lives. Yet, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research found nearly on in five drivers report having driven without wearing their seat belt in the past 30 days; nearly one-fifth report doing this more than once, and more than 1 in 20 report driving without a seat belt fairly often or regularly. This behavior happens despite the fact that most drivers (88.2 percent) view it as unacceptable to drive without wearing a seat belt, and more than four in five (81.9 percent) say that they never do. The “do as I say, not as I do,” behavior is all too common when it comes to traffic safety. Seat belt use has been increasing nationwide (87 percent), but there remains a wide gap (9 percent) between front seat belt use and rear seat belt use. Rear seat passengers are three times more likely to die in a crash if they are unbuckled, according to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association. Currently 28 states have seat belt laws covering all passengers.

Administration (NHTSA). “Unfortunately many passengers will not change their behavior unless there is a legal consequence,” said Karen Morgan, Public Policy Manager, The Auto Club Group (AAA). “Because of this attitude, the easiest and most cost effective way to save lives and prevent injuries is to improve the current seat belt law to cover all vehicle occupants.” Nationally, seat belt use by adult rear seat passengers is only 78 percent, compared to 87 percent for the front seat passenger. The discrepancy is even more pronounced in motor vehicle crashes involving a fatality: 60 percent rear belt use versus 74 front belt use. It is estimated from 1975 to 2014 seat belts have saved 330,507 lives nationwide. If all passengers had worn a seat belt during those years, a total of 709,489, or an additional 378,983 lives could have been saved, according to NHTSA. Visit bit.ly/1XEIBLM for the full Traffic Safety Culture Index report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Osprey Observer Journalist Uncovers Grandfather’s Magical Photos

By Kelly Wise Valdes

My grandfather, Chet Wise, was a master craftsman/woodworker that handcrafted many of the architectural details during the construction of the Magic Kingdom in Orlando. He was a patient perfectionist and meticulous in his craftsmanship. Apparently, Walt Disney had been very particular in the details of everything in the original Disneyland Park in California, and although he had already passed away prior to the Magic Kingdom opening, the legacy continued. My grandfather passed away several years ago, and my grandmother passed away three years ago. I ended up with a small box of her miscellaneous personal items, which I glanced through, but I just put them in my spare hall closet when I got home and proceeded about my regularly scheduled life. Fast-forward three years. When packing to move, I came across the small, unremarkable box. I opened it up and took note of some vintage Disney memorabilia, which wasn’t particularly unusual because both my grandparents worked and retired from Disney. I noticed in the bottom of the box a small, brown leather photo album. I opened it up and from first glance I saw some faded photos of what looked like a construction site. I realized that these were my grandfather’s photos of the Magic Kingdom, circa 1969, while under construction. Many of the pictures were taken high atop scaffolding.

Going Viral

I posted a single picture to my Facebook page, and surprised at the response from my friends, I picked out 13

more pictures and scanned them to post. Next thing I know, my grandfather’s pictures were being shared over and over, by people I didn’t know, literally across the entire globe. I started receiving hundreds and hundreds of emails. I was asked to be on podcast, and called by many media outlets. CNN asked to do a feature profile on the pictures. People were fascinated. I was fascinated on why all the fascination. Apparently I found out what “going viral” actually meant. I called my father to discuss his dad’s pictures, but he didn’t know about them. I asked my sister and she had never seen them. I’m not certain anyone had ever seen these pictures except for my grandparents who put them in the album, never to be seen again. Until now. I believe that many of these pictures were specific to the architectural things he personally worked on. I remember him telling us that he crafted the detailed and intricate woodwork around the windows in the train station at the front of the park. He also did all the elaborate woodworking for windows on Main Street, Cinderella’s Castle and Pinocchio’s Village. My cousin remembers him saying he crafted the amazing door at the Liberty Tavern.

Candid Shot

I’ve started researching and formulating what was happening and why these particular photos went viral. I believe I’ve come to a reasonable explanation why so many people have been fascinated by them. Apparently there are many stock photos that were staged and released by

Disney that depict the construction during that time period. But, seemingly there may not be a great deal of amateur, candid photographs during this stage. My father and I speculated that we weren’t even sure that the construction crews were allowed to take pictures. But, my grandfather was a little mischievous. If you think of the logistics, it wouldn’t be easy. In 1971, people didn’t have small cell phone cameras. My grandfather had a large, heavy 35 millimeter camera and he was working high on scaffolding. Some of his pictures from up high show the vastness of the whole construction site. One of the random pictures looks

like it was taken from an airplane.

Disney Residents

My grandfather worked for Disney until he retired. Although thousands of construction workers were there during the Magic Kingdom construction, when the park was completed, the jobs were done. However, Disney kept a small handful of these master craftsmen and made them fulltime Disney employees, and my grandfather was one of the chosen few. My grandmother, Betty Wise, also worked at the Magic Kingdom since before it opened and was one of the executive administra-

tive assistants who helped set up the executive offices. My grandparents worked there until their retirement in the mid 80s. They were active Disney retirees, belonging to the “Golden Ears Club.” As a side note, my grandparents were one of 10 families that actually lived on Disney property, as Disney needed a handful of residents in order to incorporate Lake Buena Vista as an actual city back in the early 70s. There were literally 10 homes on a small site located close to the Magic Kingdom. In order to be part of this small group, these employees were handpicked, and my grandparents lived on Disney property

until my grandfather passed away. It was so close to the Magic Kingdom that I could see fireworks from their front yard when I was a kid. Today, many visitors may not truly notice the amazing craftsmanship that went into the smallest of touches in each building. The details of the exterior of just the windows and doors throughout the park are actually intricate pieces of art. My grandfather would want them to slow down. Look. It’s part of what makes the Magic Kingdom so magical. View this article on our website, OspreyObserver.com, to see more photos.
