It took three years before her dad had a chance to see her again. Perhaps a little late, but Coates was honored by his now much larger and extended family along with

Ever since his return from serving his country, World War II Air Force veteran Corporal Richard H. Coates, had just one wish; to get an official welcome home festivity after serving three and a half years overseas and to be presented with a flag. Coates, 96, was unable to return to the United States at the end of the war due to the misplacement of his service records delaying his homecoming for nearly three months, resulting in his preclusion from the country’s victory celebration. While it took Coates more than 70 years for his wish to come true, his family including his four daughters and a son felt was better late than never. To that end, the family decided to host a surprise welcome home neighborhood parade as well as to officially

Headline Entertainment Lineup Announced For 2018 Florida Strawberry Festival
By Kate Quesada
The Florida Strawberry Festival released its lineup of headline entertainment artists performing on the Wish Farms Soundstage at the 2018 Florida Strawberry Festival. The 11-day community event will take place from March 111. Over 24 headline entertainment artists perform every year on the Wish Farms Soundstage and comprise one of the most popular attractions at the event, Davis said. Advance tickets for admission and for headline entertainment shows will go on sale Thursday, Dec. 7 at 8 a.m. and can be purchased online at www.flstrawberryfestival.com, at the Amscot Main Ticket Office located at 2209 W. Oak Ave. in Plant City or by calling 754-1996. “The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Building New Memories!’ with a strong emphasis on the construction of our new GT Grandstands seating area,” said Florida Strawberry Festival President Paul Davis.
The event’s board of directors broke ground on the project in March, and construction is expected to be complete by the end of the month. The new bleacher-style seating will accommodate 9,200 total guests, is closer to the stage and will be more comfortable for guests, Davis said. Another change with the construction project is that the event will no longer offer free seating to headline shows. “This was an extremely difficult decision for us,” said Davis. “But we absolutely had to construct new seating. And when you start crunching the numbers, there was just no way economically for us to offer free seats any longer.” The 83rd Annual Florida Strawberry Festival will take place March 1-11. Beginning in January, specials, discounts and free entertainment will be announced at www.flstrawberryfestival.com.

Reversible Lanes No Longer Recommended After Residents Voice Opinions At Meetings

HW 1 Hundreds of area residents have participated in the discussion of the Brandon Corridors and Mixed-Use Centers Pilot Project. Residents have voiced their opinions through emails and attending community engagement meetings. At the last meeting held on Monday, October 30 at The Regent in Riverview, approximately 140 residents appeared. Issues being studied included land use, transit and roads (including reversible lanes on Bloomingdale Ave. which eliminates left turns), widening Lumsden Rd. and intersection improvements. The study showed that while reversible lanes on Bloomingdale could increase capacity in the east/west corridors, it would put undue stress on the north/south corridors. Road widening is an option, but this could prove to be too costly. Finally, improving intersections and redevelopment might be the best options. During the presentation, it was noted that 60 percent of residents travel through the Brandon area to get to the Westshore area or to the USF area, and 16 percent of retail occurs in the Brandon area. Many area residents voiced opinions similar to that of George May who was representing the Bloomingdale Homeowners Association. May said, "Take the
tion exploded. Additionally, residents such as Tanya Doran, Executive Director of the Riverview Chamber of Commerce said, “Be mindful of the business community and the impact decisions will have on them and the community overall." Melissa Zornitta, Executive Director of the Planning Commission said, "We were pleased with the fantastic turnout for the October 30 meeting. The feedback received throughout the process at meetings and via email has helped us in developing recommendations and finalizing the study. To that end, reversible lanes on Bloomingdale will not be recommended as a next step. The study will be accepted by the Planning Commission as complete at their December 11 meeting. There will be additional planning, design, and engineering studies by the County, HART or FDOT to implement the transportation improvements that are recommended, like intersection improvements along Bloomingdale, and the land use policy recommendations to encourage redevelopment in areas along SR 60." Residents are urged to continue to voice their opinion on the issues raised by the Brandon Corridors and Mixed-Use Centers Pilot Project (http://plan hillsborough.org/Brandoncorridor-mixed-use-centers.

WWII Vet Welcomed. .. Continued From Page 1
By Tamas Mondovics
Brandon WWII Veteran Corporal Richard H. Coates, 96, (center) is joined by his family for a photo during Veterans Day. The family surprised Coats with a special homecoming and flag presentation, which he had missed out on after his return from the war.
dozens of friends and neighbors on this year’s Veterans Day, which interestingly also fell on the exact day, 75 years ago at the age of 21 that he has joined the army in 1942. “I am honored and exploding with pride,” Coates said following the parade-ride around the neighborhood of his Brandon home on his patriotically decorated golf cart. “I have received not just a flag but a whole parade.” Coates next door neighbor, Don Lovett, 62, a Vietnam veteran himself took charge in leading the procession, not to mention adding to the festivities by grilling some burgers and hot dogs for the family and to all who had come to show their support celebrating this year’s Veterans Day. “This is a beautiful event,” Lovett
said. “I love the entire family and it is wonderful that they have not forgotten their dad’s sacrifice, honoring him by organizing his very own homecoming.” Of course, the event could not have been complete without some dessert, while cameras were clicking from every angle including a family photo, which thanks to all present took a bit of organizing. Pleased with how things had turned out and what the children were able to accomplish in honor of their dad, youngest daughter Rhonda Noland Coates, exclaimed, “I am so happy for the support of the community and their willingness to come out to line the street and make dad feel special. We couldn't have asked for anything more.”

Florida’s Largest Orthopedic Group Breaks Ground For Expansion In Brandon
By Tyler Sminkey
Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI) recently announced its plan to build a new, larger facility in Brandon to accommodate its growing practice. The FOI building will serve as the anchor tenant at the Brandon Gateway Medical Plaza located at 560 S. Lakewood Drive. Crews broke ground October 24 on the 29,000 sq. ft. facility, which will replace the 13,000-sq. ft. location on E. Brandon Blvd. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2018. The 53,000 sq. ft. project is one of the last remaining parcels of land owned by the Guyardo Family, wellknown for their legacy in Brandon farming. The project is being developed, designed and constructed by Ryan Companies. “We’re excited to expand our Brandon medical center so that we can treat patients more efficiently and maintain a level of care they have come to expect at Florida Orthopaedic Institute,” said Marc Katzin, chief operating officer. “The facility will include the newest technology and treatment options so that patients can receive all of the care they need at one location,” added Katzin. Features include 30 exam rooms, x-
ray and MRI machines. Patients will also be able to receive physical and occupational therapy. Florida Orthopaedic Institute will be the primary tenant occupying more than half of the Plaza’s 53,000 sq. ft. FOI partnered with the developer, builder and property manager Ryan Companies US to build the center. Rojo Architecture designed the space and Collier Arnold is the real estate broker. Founded in 1989, Florida Orthopaedic Institute is Florida’s largest orthopedic group and provides expertise and treatment of orthopedic-related injuries and conditions, including adult reconstruction and arthritis, chiropractic services, foot and ankle, general orthopedics, hand and wrist, interventional spine, musculoskeletal oncology, orthopedic trauma, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, sports medicine, shoulder and elbow, spine, urgent care, and weight management, among others. FishHawk resident Erin Cowan owns and operates The Butter Tree, specializing in custom decorated sugar cookies for any occasion from birthday parties to weddings and showers. Cowan, a former lawyer who practiced in New York City before moving to Florida, started the business to keep busy while staying home with her children. “I got started after randomly coming across a blog post about decorated sugar cookies in 2001,” said Cowan. “I have no professional training and am self-taught from trial and error.” The Butter Tree offers vanilla or almond sugar cookies with royal icing. As homes begin to transform with holiday spirit, families and friends gather for visits and celebrations. Our pets also share in in the joy of the holiday season with us. It is important to remember that allowing our pets to join us in our holiday feasts can sometimes lead to upset stomachs, cause diarrhea and even result in an unexpected visit to the emergency clinic or veterinarian's office. You may find it difficult at times to ignore a cat's constant meow or a dog's imploring looks as it begs for a taste of your holiday meal, but be sure not to overindulge their appetites. As boring as it sounds to us, pets thrive on a stable diet of the same food. For every junk yard dog with a cast-iron gut, there are 30 other pets that cannot handle a sudden change in the consistency of their diet. A well-balanced pet food with the proper ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fats gives a pet a healthy, well-regulated digestive system. Although some pets are able to enjoy a piece of the white meat
from a turkey and a small helping of vegetables (without gravy or butter), others will end up with cramps and distress from even the smallest amount of something different than their usual food. If you feel you must share your holiday dinner with your four-legged family members, remember that pets should only be given a very small amount of lean meat (i.e., low-fat chicken or turkey), vegetables and fruits. Foods to avoid include sauces, gravies, butter, sugars, dairy products or anything high in oils or fats. Do not allow your pet to chew on turkey bones, which can cause serious health problems. Veterinarians generally tell clients not to give their pets any "people food" at all in order to avoid potential gastrointestinal pain for pets and expensive veterinary care bills for their pet owner. However, since it is human nature to include all family members, as well as our pets, in our holiday celebrations, I just ask that you remember these two simple rules: Rule #1: Only feed your pets healthy choices Rule #2: Feed your pets very small amounts Our pets are much smaller than we are and do not need larger portions of any kind of food, even for those that are healthy. The best advice I can give is to remember that moderation is the key to a successful celebration.
