Riverview & SouthShore Relay Events Celebrate Hope, Survivors & Raise Funds For Cure SouthShore and Riverview residents have two opportunities to help fight cancer this month with Relay for Life events taking place at local high schools. On Saturday, March 25, students and community members will join teams at East Bay High School to walk, camp and participate in other activities to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, while the Relay at Riverview High School, with similar events, will take place on Friday, March 31. According to Experience Lead and Team Captain for Relay for Life SouthShore, Teena Garbus, more than 300 people are currently signed up under 38 teams for the East Bay event which has a goal of $75,000. The Riverview High School event, with a racing theme, is hoping to raise $100,000. “The Relay event isn’t really a race,” said Garbus, who attended East Bay High School and started participating in the Relay in 2003 after her grandmother passed away. “There will be no finisher medals and there is no requirement of how many laps a person has to walk. Rather, each team is encouraged to have someone walking at all times to signify the fact that cancer never sleeps, so for one night, neither will we.” During the times participants are not walking the track they will be able to join in a large number of other activities planned including karaoke, scavenger hunts, an eating contest and a Quidditch tournament at the SouthShore event and musical chairs and a Mr. And Mrs. Relay contest at the Riverview Relay. According to Garbus, some of the activities will be free and some will have a small cost. More details on the timing of the events

The population of Riverview continues to explode and along with more people comes more plazas, more shops and more restaurants, both national chains and locally-owned establishments. Two Florida-based, national chains will soon be coming to a plaza near you as First Watch and Tijuana Flats are poised to open soon along U.S. Hwy. 301 in the Summerfield area in a yet-to-be-named strip center. First Watch, The Daytime Café, known for breakfast, brunch and lunch is scheduled to open in mid-April, 13013 U.S. Hwy. 301, Suite C, according to First Watch Restaurants Public Relations and Communications Manager Eleni Kouvatos. “We’ve actually had our sights set on Riverview for years,” said Kouvatos.”We saw the new development in Riverview as a fantastic opportunity to finally introduce our fresh breakfast, brunch and lunch to our friends in Riverview. The restaurant is near I-75, and the area is surrounded by booming residential developments too. We couldn’t be more thrilled to open here.” First Watch in Brandon opened four years ago and she reports that it has proven to be a very successful spot. The new restaurant will have our new Urban Farm restaurant design, which is different from the First Watch in Brandon. It combines the high energy of
urban life while bringing in a lot of rustic, farm elements. “It’s a comforting atmosphere we think people will love,” she said. First Watch in Riverview will also have a menu that offers a couple new options too. The 3,400-sq.-ft. restaurant will employ about 25 people and be open from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., seven days a week. For more information, visit www.firstwatch.com. Next door to First Watch, Tijuana Flats Tex-Mex, also is scheduled to open in late Spring. At Tijuana Flats, everything is made-to-order. There are no microwaves and no freezers and the chips, salsa, queso, guacamole and tortillas are all made from scratch. Tijuana Flats offers a laid back atmosphere and an “anything goes” attitude. Menu items include all of the TexMex favorites including nachos, burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas, salads, combination platters and more. The restaurant prides itself on its healthy approach of using only fresh ingredients, lard-free vegetarian beans, no canned foods, hormone-free chicken, pork and steak and cooking oil free of trans-fat. Started by a UCF college student who had an idea, no experience in the industry and a $20,000 loan from his dad, Tijuana Flats now has more than 100 restaurants in six states. 25th Manatee Festival Of The Arts Offers Art, Food, Music And More By Kate Quesada
This month marks the 25th anniversary of the Apollo Beach Manatee Festival of the Arts and the 2017 event promises to be better than ever with food and entertainment for the whole family. Taking place at Ruskin's E.G. Simmons Park on Saturday and Sunday, March 11 and 12 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., the event is expected to draw 10,000 people from all over the Tampa Bay. For the first time this year, the SouthShore Chamber is partnering with local art organizations the Firehouse Cultural Center and SouthShore Arts Council on the cultural aspects of the festival. "We are used to planning events, but our area of expertise is not art. With the art organizations taking the lead on those aspects, it is a perfect fit and is sure to be a festival to remember," said Southshore Chamber Executive Director Melanie Rimes. In addition to 100 artist booths, many of which are new to the festival, there will be a large children's area sponsored, organized and run by the Firehouse Cultural Center. The area, which is free and according to Rimes has doubled since last year, will offer fish prints, color sandcastle sculptures, design boards, manatee drawing horses, story-telling from the Ruskin Library, sun prints, face painting and balloon art from Jumbo the Pirate. There will also be art work on dis-
play from local schools and Suncoast Youth Conservation Center in Apollo Beach, will have a hands on kids area. The entertainment stage will showcase music from Emily Joy at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by live demonstrations from Tampa Bay Martial Arts Academy at 12 Noon. At 1 p.m. there will be a dance performance by Armetta's Gan Jete Studio of Dance in Apollo Beach and 1:45 p.m. will offer a concert from Opera Tampa. The entertainment for the day will end at 3 p.m. with Victoria Ginty and Ladyhawke. On Sunday, the music will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with Luis Garcia from Rumba Brothers, Latin Jazz and Flamenco Fusion, with Pinpoint Jazz following at 12:45 p.m. The Damon Fowler Band will take the stage at 3:15 p.m. Cold beer and wine will be available at three locations throughout the event and food will be available from Buttman BBQ, Mullet Shack, C&S Specialties, Stanford Jerky, Bearcakes, Kona Ice, OI Kentucky Concessions, Skoops, TLC Concessions, Poppin Don's Old Fashioned Ice Cream and more. "This festival is unique because there is something for everyone," said Rimes. "We involve everyone, not only the arts community and not only the chamber business community. Everyone can be there." Contact the chamber at 645-1366 or www.southshorechamberofcommerce.org.

Florida State Fair Recycled Yard Art Winners On Display Through March 21
Lisa Meredith & Lynn Barber
As you probably know by now, twice a year, we sponsor a Recycled Yard Art Contest, one at the Hillsborough County Fair and one at the Florida State Fair. The purpose of the Recycled Yard Art Contest is to increase environmental awareness and encourage reuse/recycling of materials into yard art. The competition involved two and three dimensional art created from items already used for their original purpose. During the 12 days of the 2017 Florida State Fair, attendees voted for the People’s Choice award on one of the 24 entries submitted. The votes have been tallied, all 9,142 of them (an increase from the 2016 vote total of 8,144), and the winner is: Andy Hamilton for the “Farm Bike” created with boat fenders, bicycle parts, wheels and a propane cylinder. Jeffrey Scott De Blasio won first place for his “Metal Bonefish Sculpture”, which was created from horseshoes and various other metal parts. Dowdell Middle Magnet School won the first place Middle School Award for its creation, “Teacup Planter” that utilized old tires, tin cans,
paint, a paper bag and rope. The first place award for an Elementary School went to Ballast Point Elementary for “Fence Picket Self Portraits” made with reclaimed wooden fence pickets. First place for a High School was awarded to Hannah Barrionuevo from Wharton High School for her “Piano” created from clay and clothespins. All of the contest winning entries will be on display at the UF/IFAS Extension Service, 5339 CR 579, Seffner, until March 21. We hope you will stop by to view these creations, stroll through the Bette S. Walker Discovery Garden and see what we have to offer. I’m truly amazed at the creativity of all of the artists. Each of us would probably be surprised at how creative we can be. This is a great time to put on your thinking caps for a Recycled Yard Art project you have been considering creating…and create it. We will have two Recycled Yard Art competitions in 2018; one at the Hillsborough County Fair, and one at the Florida State Fair. Hope you will participate. Thanks for Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and Repeating.

Boyette Springs National Honor Society Empowers New Inductees To Serve
By Amy Schechter
NEHS Officers, Kaylee Cribbs (president), Stella Hellman (vice president,) & Vanessa Villa (secretary)
Although the National Honor Society is a well-known organization at the middle and high school levels, grades K-6 were often overlooked until 2008 when the elementary offshoot formally began. Now, Boyette Springs Elementary School is making a name for themselves in the community and truly doing their part to facilitate a continuum of excellence throughout K-12 education. All inductees into the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) must demonstrate excellence in four core categories: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Inductees in grades 4-6 maintain a “B” or higher average and demonstrate that their other accomplishments and attributes place them in the upper echelon of the student population. However, the Boyette Springs NEHS chapter partners with the student council to allow students in all grade levels, even those who may not meet the academic qualifications, to access invaluable service projects and leadership opportunities, which truly creates a pipeline of opportunity for the student body. In fact, the number of inductees in 2017 doubled with 46 new members attending the February 17 ceremony. Tawnya Anderson, the NEHS advisor, and Natalie Rados, the student council faculty advisor, could not be more proud. She and Rados know that the combined effort just makes sense: “It gets younger kids involved. They end up seeing the whole picture of how their efforts impact others.” Since their merger, the students
have been involved with numerous charitable initiatives. They collected items for the Echo Food Drive, an organization that collects food and non-perishables for low-income families, even able to see it through from the collection and organization of items to the delivery of these items to needy families. They also have helped with the Special Olympics, an athletic event for persons with disabilities, and Relay for Life, a fundraiser benefiting the American Cancer Society. Their efforts do not seem to stop, as they are actively involved with Project Sunshine and the Crayon Initiative, providing resources to children in need. Even locally, they plan on implementing a spring school beautification project where they will research Florida friendly plants and transform the front of their school. The students know that doing good means feeling good. Vanessa Villa, a student at Boyette and secretary of NEHS, smiles, “It’s really special. I feel really honored to be in NEHS. We get to help the community and do our best.” Plus, they are being groomed as leaders, sure to carry over into middle school and beyond. “It’s set me in a position where I set a role for people both in getting projects done and encouraging others,” Kaylee Cribbs, president, adds. Boyette Springs NEHS is currently seeking initiative where they can donate their time or partner with local groups for service-learning initiatives. They also hope to solicit donations for the school beautification project. If you want to learn more or become involved, please contact Anderson or Rados at tawnya.anderson@sdhc.k12.fl.us or

Feed The Bay is a multi-church effort with hundreds of volunteers uniting to feed the hungry.
Feed The Bay is an annual community-wide outreach where local churches and businesses team up with Publix Super Markets to collect thousands of pounds of food for local food agencies throughout the Tampa Bay area. This year, the event takes place on Sunday, March 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with participation from 34 churches, 14 food agencies and 15 Publix Super Markets. For more than a decade, this event has stocked the pantry shelves of local food agencies such as the Women’s Resource Center, ECHO and the United Food Bank. So how does it work? The coordinated effort offers a simple yet effective process to purchase the food items. Participating shoppers are provided a grocery list of requested items. Immediately after the shopper purchases the food, volunteers waiting outside load the donated food onto a semi-truck. At 2 p.m., the loaded food truck sets out to a predetermined agency, where another group of volunteers is waiting to unload and sort the food onto the pantry shelves.
By the next morning, the food agency is ready to serve with a replenished pantry. Melanie Langston, the event coordinator at Bay Life Church in Brandon has led the charge of this operation since 2011. “I fell in love with Feed The Bay the first time I saw it simply because it was so laser focused and so easy for the whole family to get involved....It is a teachable moment. It is simply going and being the hands and feet of Christ,” said Langston. The one-day event yields instant and visible results of replenished pantries in food agencies across the Bay, but it also spawns long-standing desirable effects in other ways. Cheryl Hickman, founder and executive director of the Women’s Resource Center of Tampa explained, “ We normally have close to 100 volunteers that help on that day. We help mostly single parent moms get reestablished with employment, housing and healthcare. Once they (the volunteers) understand that we don’t just need food but also clothes, household items, furniture, they begin to see the whole picture.” Volunteers must be at least 14 years old, but children are welcome to participate alongside their parents. For more information or to sign up as a volunteer, please visit www.feedthebay.org or contact Melanie Langston at mlangston@baylife.org.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's The Flying Locksmiths. This national franchise was started in 1946 and exploded across the country thanks to their professionalism and family values. Locally, The Flying Locksmith opened for business on October 3, 2016 by Tammy Broussard and her husband, Michael Broussard, President elect of Fishhawk Riverview Rotary Club: of which he has been a member for eight years. They are a part of both the Riverview and Valrico Chamber of Commerce. They offer a wide variety of security solutions and locksmith services for both residential and commercial needs but Michael mentioned that currently, “We primarily work with facilities managers on commercial sites.” Their price ranges vary based on the specific needs of each customer and are available 24 hours a day with a national dispatch center easily reached by phone. Along with their work for a number of local big box stores, much of their work impacts “local drug, alcohol...and assisted living facilities,” according to Michael. Tammy continued, “Keeping patients safe” by fixing and changing locks to ensure that the facilities know where their patients are at all times.
“We want folks to know that this has been our home, we are part of the community,” Tammy said, “we have lived here for a dozen years...this was perfect for us”. Tammy and Michael have been pillars of the local community, dedicating their time to organizations that help those in need. Michael explained that they have recently “spearheaded the crayfish festival that raised over $20,000 for...charities and scholarships.” Tammy has previously been involved in the Software and Technology industry with a strong background in sales. Having such a strong background in technology comes in handy as according to their website, “the locksmith industry is changing; it is not just a mechanical trade, it’s moving quickly to an electronic trade.” The Flying Locksmiths has 12 local employees and are seeking an additional qualified locksmith for their team. They hire only second and third generation locksmiths. Inquiries can be made at their local offices on 156 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Brandon. For information, visit flyinglocksmith.com/tampa-south or call 24/7: 801-3145.

HCC’s Funding Request Of Florida Legislature Includes SouthShore Campus By Tamas Mondovics
Spring is around the corner and Tampa Bay fishing will soon come alive. March to early April generally marks the start of our spring fishery for Snook and Redfish. Most of the time, weather will dictate when fishing patterns and seasons truly change. This year, I think our March fishing is going to be excellent. There are a lot of healthy fish around, bait is still abundant, and the conditions have been mild at worst overall. Snook will certainly be the highlight of many trips in the coming weeks. Large schools will emerge from rivers, creeks, and residential canals to the nearest flats and mangrove shorelines to feed heavily. Once the bait moves in from the depths of the bay to our shallow grass flats, expect to see plenty of Snook lurking around. Pilchards (Greenbacks, White-Bait) will be the bait of choice rigged under a popping cork or free-line. I recommend using 20-30 lb. Ohero fluorocarbon leader and depending on the size of the bait, a 1/O to 3/O Mustad circle hook will get you the best results. Focus on fishing mangrove points and creek mouths where current flow is present. Snook like to ambush their pray and use “eddy” currents and swash points to feed naturally. Snook season opens March 1 and closes May 1. If you plan on harvesting a fish, it must be at least 28” and no greater than 33” in order to keep and you are only allowed one fish per harvester/day. Also don’t forget to purchase your Snook stamp along with your FWC fishing license. Redfish are starting to show back up in good numbers and the fishing

should pickup any day now. Some larger schools have arrived in their normal places. On the right tides, they will provide epic fishing trips and everlasting memories this spring. With the water as clear as it is, most of the fish I have seen and caught have been pretty shallow – sometimes too shallow to take a boat. Unlike Snook they will lurk in inches of water in search of crabs, shrimp, and small bait fish sometimes even in large schools. As the weeks progress, more and more schools will show up on flats and mangrove shorelines – just like the Snook. Look for the best fishing to be on healthy grass flats and concentrate on the pot holes. These are the white, sandy areas peppered along the bottom. On the transitions between tides (incoming or outgoing) Redfish will stage up and feed as its food source is swept across with the tide. They like to lay in the pot holes or edges of grass beds to ambush their meal. Pilchards will be the most common bait used, but equally as effective is a pinfish. In fact, I prefer pinfish when I am fishing for Redfish. Use the same rig and technique as mentioned above, but you might have to use a larger hook if using larger bait. Captain Travis Yaeckel is a native resident of the SouthShore area and charters full time for Redfish, Snook, Trout, and Tarpon. He is owner and operator of Instinct Fishing Co.,based out of lower Tampa Bay. To book a charter, call 830-FISH or visit www.fishbyinstinct.com. Ladies Night Out Promises Fun Evening With Christian Comedian Amberly Neese On Thursday, March 23, Christian comedian Amberly Neese will share her gift of humor and passion for Christ at Bell Shoals Baptist Church in Brandon. Armed with comedic flair and candor, Neese will tackle everyday stressors and scenarios from a biblical perspective. Neese said, “I am stoked to speak at this event and cannot wait to meet each of you there. Grab a friend and a Depends undergarment and get ready to giggle.” The food and fun kicks off at 5 p.m. with a shopping EXPO and a sweet supply of chocolate confectionaries and delicious desserts. The main event begins at 7 p.m. when Neese takes center stage to treat the ladies to a time of encouragement and enlightenment in the faith. As a little girl, Neese was known for her sidesplitting storytelling. Yet, it wasn’t until her first speaking engagement at a women’s retreat almost 25 years ago that she realized she could use humor to point others to Jesus. After the retreat, she came home changed. Neese discovered her calling—to remind others of the joy that is found in a life abiding in Christ. “It is his (God’s) design for us to live a life of joy,” said Neese. Renowned as the “joy” lady, Neese’s

infectious laugh and humor delights her audiences all over the country. In addition to her speaking engagements, Neese has written two devotionals books: Fragrance of Faith and Treasure of Trust. She has also been featured in Desiree Carter’s Remarkable Women of Faith, a book of testimonies from godly women. Currently, Neese resides in Phoenix, Arizona with her husband and two children. She serves as an adjunct professor at Grand Canyon University. She is crazy about her family, the Food Network, and all things Star Wars.
