Osprey Observer Honored With BOCC Commendation For 15th Anniversary

Happy with the news of the long awaited redevelopment of the site in the heart of their community, many expressed relief and spoke highly of the choice of new stores. “So very excited about the construction starting on the new Sprouts store (old Albertsons on Lithia),” posted Buckhorn Preserve resident Shawn Bernier on his Facebook page shortly after he heard the news. “I was at the Sprouts in Carrollwood, last week and it is a fabulous store. Kind of like Trader Joes.” Hillsborough County Commissioner Stacy White, whose district includes the Valrico community, also spoke highly of the renovation, and the need for a redevelopment of the plaza, which by sitting vacant was slowly becoming an eyesore.

Staff members from The Osprey Observer attended a recent meeting of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners where they were given a Commendation by Commissioner Stacy White.
The Osprey Observer staff received an exciting honor from the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) last month. The team, led by Managing Editor Marie Gilmore, was given a Commendation from the BOCC celebrating the publication’s 15th anniversary and recognizing its impact on the community. At the April 5 BOCC meeting in downtown Tampa, members of the Osprey Observer staff were recognized by County Commissioner Stacy White and were presented with a plaque commemorating the commendation and congratulating the newspaper on its 15th anniversary. The plaque also recognized the publication for providing informative local news to the community. During the BOCC’s regular meetings, commissioners often give out proclamations and commendations to recognize important dates and causes and to celebrate significant contributions of businesses, groups and individuals to the people of Hillsborough County. “Commissioners are free to choose recognitions as they wish and commissioners choose to recognize individuals,
groups and businesses for a variety of reasons,” said White, who explained during the meeting that he looks forward to receiving the Osprey Observer in his mailbox every month. “I decided to recognize the Osprey Observer for this milestone anniversary because it is a successful small business in the district

The long held debate and guessing game about what store(s) if any, might occupy the more than 55,000 sq. ft. former Alberstons grocery store building that has been sitting vacant for the past few years in Valrico is officially over. Developer, Woerner Equity Group, a West Palm Beach Florida-based full service real estate firm that focuses on the acquisition and development of commercial properties with an emphasis on shopping centers, is now redeveloping the site to house Sprouts Farmers Market, PetSmart and Orange Theory Fitness. Renamed, Valrico Landing, the site is located just east of Brandon, at the intersection on the northeast corner of Lithia Pinecrest Rd. and Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico. Coupled with signalized access, the entire plaza will feature 155 parking spots and will also include one additional 4,000 sq. ft. outparcel for rent near the front of the site. Woerner officials confirmed that the building will be divided into three sections with Sprouts occupying nearly 30,000 sq.

TGH Celebrates Healthplex Grand Opening, Emergency Services Offered

The Healthplex first opened its Emergency Center, which includes 20 private beds and two resuscitation bays open around the clock to treat adult and pediatric patients, while the on-site helipad is promising to allow Aeromed to Residents watch as the Aeromed chopper lands at the newly opened TGH Brandon Healthplex.
After nearly two years in the making, including land acquisition, planning, design and construction, TGH Brandon Healthplex, Tampa General Hospital’s first state-of-the-art, off-site, outpatient medical center is now open. Designed to be a convenient destination for patients to access a broad spectrum of quality health care services – all under one roof—the long anticipated 130,000 sq. ft., four-story comprehensive ambulatory center is located at 10740 Palm River Rd. near Topgolf. TGH officials said that the new facility will house the hospital’s first free-standing adult and pediatric emergency departments, a helipad, surgery center, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, and physician offices. It will provide easy access to outpatient ambulatory care. “This is really Tampa General’s first major step into the new world of health care, which is bringing health care to you,” said John A. Brabson Jr. chairman of the TGH Board of Directors. “Our goal is to offer the same excellent care, but to do it in a more efficient way, and in a more convenient way for you.” TGH Brandon Healthplex celebrated the start of the multi-phased opening with a free, community open house, giving guests a chance for a sneak peek of the facility. The event saw representatives from the Tampa Bay Rays, the Tampa Bay Lightning, Top Golf, iFly indoor skydiving, and the American Heart Association. Radio station WQYK provided music, while food was offered by Chick-Fil-A and Brandon’s Corner Bakery Café. Boasting of the benefits, Brabson

TGH spokesperson John Dunn said that the Healthplex Ambulatory Outpatient Surgery Center has seen its first case mid-April, and will provide a variety of same-day surgeries for adults and pediatric patients. The surgery center features six operating rooms with space to add two more in the future, and two endoscopy rooms. It also includes 13 recovery rooms and 24 pre-and-post-procedure bays. Additional services include the fullservice laboratory to provide a wide range of lab tests, an Imaging Services area, which includes digital X-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds. A full-service pharmacy is currently available for patients, employees, and later offered to the public, is now located on the first floor and accepts most major health insurance plans. A café area is next to the pharmacy and sells beverages, salads, snacks, soups and other items. REALTOR® Barbara McGinnis’ personality is as vibrant as her bejeweled glasses. She made them herself, she said, with tiny red, white, and blue gems for a patriotic look. McGinnis obtained her real estate license in 1985, after raising her three children, and has been serving the Tampa Bay real estate market ever since. She started working for Yellowfin Realty in 2014, and splits her time between helping people list or buy a home and managing rental properties. She specializes in first-time home buyers, although she’s always happy to see repeat buyers or customers from the past. According to McGinnis, the most important part of working with new home buyers is to remain patient. The average buyer sees eight to ten homes before finding the one that will be a future home. “We keep looking until that smile crosses their face that they just can’t wipe off, and they light up like a Christmas tree,” McGinnis said. Right now, there are “more buyers than homes to buy,” said McGinnis. “We’re absolutely blowing up.” Because of the market, where it can be hard for buyers to find existing homes

After Public Input, County Superintendent Recommends Postponing Implementation Of Student Bell Times Changes To 2018-2019 Season

Last month, Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins informed district families, staff and community members with his final recommendation to wait one year before making district wide changes. Eakin’s note reached the community just days ahead of a Special Called Board Meeting on Tuesday, April 25, during which the school board approved with a 6 to 1 vote for the new 2018-2019 bell time schedule. The 2017-2018 bell time schedule will not change. Eakins emphasized that the proposed bell time changes are necessary because the district’s current arrival and dismissal times do not allow enough time for bus drivers to get students to and from school on time and stated that the district must correct this in order to secure the appropriate number of instructional minutes for students. Less than a month earlier, Eakins informed parents and guardians of the more than 200,000 elementary, middle and high school students in the nation’s eighth largest district of the proposed bell time change asking all to review it and send in their input so a final recommendation can be brought to the School

As expected, Eakins comments eventually circled back to the buses when he said, “Adjusting the bell schedule will allow a greater percentage of school bus drivers to transport three tiers of students (Elementary, Middle and High School). This shift translates to a cost savings of over two and a half million dollars for the school district, officials said. Brandon’s Paul Sanders Park, home to one of Hillsborough County’s most heavily used playgrounds, reopened the first week of April, following a two-month renovation and expansion project. Named after long time Brandon resident Paul Sanders, in 1991 the park is known by many as “The Tree Park” thanks to its mature oak trees that provide shade by means of a natural canopy. The news of its closing in early February to upgrade and expand the park located at 602 W. Bloomingdale Ave. was bittersweet for its regular guests, who, while agreeing with the much-needed facelift, had to exercise some patience during the duration of the project. It was no surprise to see a large crowd on opening day welcoming the finished product that includes a brand new playground along with additional play structures. “I love this park,” said Riverview residents Carolyn Napier, who has brought her son and daughter ages five and six to opening day. The playground features traditional swings and slides along with next-gen-

Workers also renovated the restrooms and shelters, repaved the parking lot, added sidewalks, and created an additional entrance to improve traffic flow. The facelift is filling up the park daily as it attracts many new families. Napier said she hopes that the park will be a little less crowed after the newness wears down but added, “We have been coming to the this park for the past four years and I am definitely planning on coming back more often, as long as it’s not too crowded.” The park is now open daily from sunrise to sunset. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) International is hosting the High Tea as a fundraising event to support and celebrate the advancement of women in education. Since 1869, P.E.O. International has helped tens of thousands of women achieve their educational goals through scholarships, grants, and low-interest loans. The Sisterhood originated in Iowa with only seven members. Today, the organization consists of nearly a quarter of a million members in thousands of chapters hailing from all 50 states and Canada. Fran Carillo, the former president of the local Chapter AM-DV, expressed much gratitude for the organization as she shared her special connection. “I went to college at the age of 37. When I was doing my teaching internship in 1978, the chapter nominated me for a Program of Continuing Education grant. Neighborhood Mini-Grants Now Available From Hillsborough County Could your neighborhood use a new sign or a bench? The Hillsborough County office of Neighborhood Relations recently opened its application period for minigrants which will award $96,000 to groups throughout the county with the goal of improving and strengthening neighborhoods. According to the Neighborhood Relations Office, groups have recently sought money for duck and bat houses, a butterfly garden and a rack for storing residents’ kayaks, among other requests. Valrico’s River Hills community spent it’s grant money from 2016 on bird houses for the Purple Martin Swallow and a nesting platform for Ospreys. However, Neighborhood Relations Office states that the grants are not just for physical enhancements, the program’s goal is to bring neighbors together and bolster community pride Grants will be awarded for up to $2,500, but groups that apply must be pre-registered with the office of neighborhood relations and applicants must take a mandatory online orienta-
tion, which is offered twice a month, before applying. The program began in 1988 and funds are allocated to it by the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. “We urge neighborhood leaders to think creatively when brainstorming about projects and types of community involvement,” said a Neighborhood Relations press release, which also explained that applications are evaluated by a committee which uses questions to rank each request. Applications for grants to fund food or drinks, infrastructure projects, cameras or electronics and those that can be funded through another source, are not considered for minigrants. However, grants are frequently given to help host community events, establish neighborhood watch programs and train neighborhood leaders to be more effective. It’s Kentucky Derby time again. Even if you’re not much of a horse racing fan, you might appreciate all the Derby’s pageantry – the mint juleps, the women’s beautiful hats, the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home,” and so on. But if you look beyond the hoopla, you’ll realize just how much work it takes to put on such an event. And the efforts of one group in particular – the jockeys – may be able to provide you with some lessons in life – and in investing. For starters, consider the stamina the jockeys show as they steer 1,000-pound thoroughbreds around the track at Churchill Downs. Riding a racehorse is difficult, demanding and dangerous, requiring enormous endurance on the part of the jockey. And in many areas of life, you too will need to show some staying power. That’s certainly true when you invest. You need the fortitude to keep on investing, in good markets and bad ones, and during all the phases of your life – even after you’ve retired. It might not always be easy – during turbulent markets, you may be tempted to take a “time out” – but the most successful investors are usually the most persistent ones. Here’s another trait shown by Kentucky Derby jockeys: vision. Jockeys must be able to spot the spaces they need to go through to gain the position they want. In other words, they see where they want to go. As an investor, you need this same ability. To illustrate: What do you want your retirement to look like? Will you stay close to home and volunteer? Will you travel the world? Will you even open a small business? You need to envision your goals if you’re going to achieve them.
Strategy is also important to jockeys. They all want to win the race, but they employ different methods. For example, three-time Kentucky Derby winner Calvin Borel’s strategy usually involves riding his horse on the rail at the inside of the track – so much so that his nickname is “Bo’rail.” As an investor, you need a strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Such a strategy will involve choosing a suitable mix of investments, reviewing your portfolio’s progress at regular intervals, and making changes as necessary. Finally, jockeys need knowledge. Is the track in good shape? How has the horse been behaving lately? What’s the weather going to be at post time? To be a good investor, you also need plenty of knowledge. You’ll need to pose some questions about individual investments you’re considering: How will this investment perform under different market environments? Will this investment fit well into my portfolio, or do I already have others similar to it? Is this an investment I can hold for the long term? And you’ll also need to learn about yourself as an investor: What is my tolerance for risk? Am I fully considering all my goals, such as college for my kids, my own retirement and the type of legacy I’d like to leave? There’s no shortage of questions for active investors to ask – and the best investors never stop learning. You can learn a lot from Kentucky Derby jockeys. By applying some of their skills and habits to your investment activities, you can keep moving toward your goals – and you won’t even have to run in circles. Riverview resident, Brandon Walker, a 25 year old wheelchair-bound veteran and his parents, recently received a backyard landscaping overhaul thanks to Flip My Florida Yard, a new weekly TV series which recently aired its first episode nationally on Fox Sports Sun and locally on WTSPChannel 10. The yard work, completed in one day, was done in the Park Creek neighborhood and is estimated to be worth $50,000. The work included constructing a lot of outdoor living spaces to give Walker easy access to the backyard, which includes a hot tub and pergola. Walker said, “My new yard is super rad. There’s a workout area for me, and I'm able to go out there independently. I loved the crew and how they designed the yard to be so accessible for me.” The Walker’s had recently closed on their home, and were selected for Flip My Yard after they submitted information describing their yard and their son’s story. The yard work is completely

Water And Environmental Conservation Workshops At Extension On a monthly basis, from February through November, we present Composting, Microirrigation and Rainwater Harvesting Workshops at the UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County. These workshops are free to Hillsborough County residents. The Composting workshop provides information about home composting, how to turn trash into treasure. Attendees will learn how to recycle kitchen and yard waste, while creating a rich soil amendment. Compost adds nutrients to the soil and retains moisture in the root zone where it can be used by plants. Composting workshop attendees receive a compost bin and thermometer. The Microirrigation workshop teaches attendees how to have a healthy and attractive lawn and landscape while conserving water. Tips on installing and using microirrigation are also presented. This irrigation method not only conserves water but is less restricted by current water restrictions.

In the Rainwater Harvesting workshop, you can learn how rain barrels, made from a 55-gallon plastic food-grade drum, are useful for collecting rainwater for landscape bed and ornamental plant irrigation. Harvesting rainwater reducing erosion, potable water use and stormwater runoff. Rainwater harvesting workshop attendees receive a rain barrel that has been drilled and spigot installed. Cabot Creamery And The Florida Dairy Farmers Hosted The First Girl Scout Patch Day
In March, the Cabot Creamery and the Florida Dairy Farmers hosted the first ever Girl Scout Patch Day which included more than 100 Girl Scouts and their families. The free program was part of Cabot’s Scout Patch program that enables Scouts to earn custom-designed patches for various educational activities focused on health, community, business and social responsibility. Girl Scouts who participated and completed the two-hour program earned Cabot’s newest patch program “Fueling Head To Toe”, that helped Scouts learn about the importance of healthy eating and exercise in building a healthy body. The Scouts engaged in adult-led fun activities to learn how to build a healthy snack, how to do yoga to strengthen their body and why dairy is a healthy part of a balanced and nutritious diet.

Local Youth Baseball Softball Programs Push For Season Championship Success With its weeklong, inleague tournaments and championship game-day fast approaching, local baseball and softball programs are pushing hard to be in top shape. Living up to the reputation, batting was strong at both the Bloomingdale Youth Sports Association (BYSA) and the FishHawk Youth Baseball FYB fields last month. Celebrating its tenth season as a Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth affiliate, the FishHawk Youth Sports Association (FYSA) baseball league currently boasts of approximately 550 baseball and 250 softball players, divided into six divisions from T-ball, rookie, minor, major, junior and senior, four softball divisions. While drawing a large portion of the community to the FishHawk Sports Complex at 16120 Fishhawk Blvd. in Lithia, FYB president Mike Love said that the league is proud of its players and volun-

Bloomingdale and surrounding area home school students and their families with Brighter Light Learning, filled the recently renovated community meeting room at the Bloomingdale Regional Library last month to host the group’s first annual International Cultural Fair. Organized by the parents, the students managed to feature, display as well as offer a brief presentation on nearly a dozen countries of their choice. Presentations included photos, crafts and in most cases a taste of traditional ethnic foods representing each country. Hillsborough County Accepting Applications For Historic Preservation Challenge Grant Program
County is now accepting applications for the Historic Preservation Challenge Grant Program for the Fiscal Year 2017 cycle of grants. The deadline to submit an application is Wednesday, June 7 at 3 p.m. The Historic Preservation Challenge Grant Program promotes historic preservation, heritage tourism, and economic development within Hillsborough County. Available grant funds are awarded to selected applicants on a minimum of oneto-one matching basis, not to exceed an award of more than $250,000 per applicant, per project in any County budget year. Projects eligible for funding must be located in Hillsborough County (incorporated or unincorporated), and fall within one or more of the following non-residential project types: rehabilitation or restoration of historic structures, compatible additions to historic properties, improvements to historic sites or grounds, and architectural heritage tourism projects. An applicant may be an eligible nonprofit or private individual or entity. It may not be a federal, state, or local government, other

The Tampa Theatre Presents Summer Film Camp With USF College of Education Florida Center The Tampa Theatre, in collaboration with the Florida Center For Instructional Technology at the USF College of Education, will offer several film camps this summer. Over the summer, both the popular live-action and stopmotion animation camps will be offered for a week in June and a week in July. Campers entering grades three to 12 work in small groups to learn the creative process of digital filmmaking, from brainstorming, story boarding, and scriptwriting to filming, lighting and editing. All of the necessary equipment is provided, including cameras, lights, sound equipment, Mac computers and software. By the end of the filmmaking session, each production team will have a three to five minute movie to showcase to friends and family on the Tampa Theatre's historic big screen. The morning session from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon. is for children entering grades three to six, and the afternoon session from 1 to 4 p.m.is for students entering grades seven to 12. Each session is $200 per camper. This includes a camp t-shirt, daily snack and a digital copy of the finished film. Campers are the stars in LiveAction Filmmaking Camp as they write, produce and act in their own short films. The camp is offered the weeks of June 12 to 16 and July 10 to 14.

Students from area high schools entered artwork in the Annual High School Art Show held at Center Place. The prizes for the winners are provided by the GFWC Brandon Service League.
The 2017 High School Art Show was held on Thursday, March 23 at Center Place in Brandon. The GFWC Brandon Service League provides the funding for the winners. Students from area high schools submit entries for 2D, 3D and photography.
