The curriculum additionally covered the history of US space exploration featuring stories of people who worked for NASA and helped develop the USA Space Industry, including Astronaut Clayton Anderson. According to the Department of Education, only 16 percent of high

Parkinson’s Disease Support Group Hosts Meetings At Hawthorne Rehab A gentleman visiting Hawthorne for speech therapy happened to mention that there seemed to be a lot of support groups in Brandon, but none for Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The seed he planted turned into the monthly meetings, which have been very successful and well attended. The first Parkinson’s Disease Support Group was held in October 2016 at Hawthorne Rehab in Brandon. Over 40 people attended, made up of a variety of those with Parkinson’s, family members, caregivers and medical professionals. The presentation for the meeting included speakers from speech, occupational and physical therapy that covered issues faced by those with Parkinson’s, ranging from swallowing and speech problems to balance and walking. Low vision issues were also covered. Comments from the enthusiastic audience ranged from “Great information,” to “You are addressing a need in the community very well, thank you.” From a therapist’s point of view, learning more about how PD impacts people on a daily basis has been extraordinary, both from listening to those with Parkinson’s as well as from their family members. The success of this support group and the interest expressed in continuing led to the decision for monthly meetings

to be held on the third Thursday of every month at 2 p.m. in Hawthorne’s new Media Center. The format is planned to include a presentation by a medical professional followed by round table discussions for caregivers and those with Parkinson’s to allow for socializing, sharing and questions. The meetings are free of charge and include refreshments. The sad part of this story is that the gentleman who inspired the meeting had a severe fall (one of the impacts of PD), and spent close to six months recovering. Early on, he never knew about the groups, even though the speech therapist attempted on several occasions to contact him. Finally, before the March meeting, the gentleman who sparked the idea for this group, was found. He and his wife were delighted with the news and promised to come. When they arrived, everyone else was seated and listening to a speaker. When the speaker was finished, and prior to breaking into round table discussions where those with PD could talk together and the family members could share tips with each other, he was introduced. Family Friendly 5K And Fun Run Honors The Sacrifice Of Heroes

The 2016 Lithia 9/11 Heroes Run will take place this year on Saturday, September 9. Runners go full speed ahead on a day to remember 9/11 and the heroes who served.

The annual 9/11 Travis Manion Foundation Heroes Run will take place on Saturday, September 9 in Lithia. The Foundation is named after Manion, who was a US Marine Corp and served in Command 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. He died April 29, 2007 saving his teammates in Iraq. He used to say, “If not me then who…”. The Foundation works to keep that attitude by helping connect military to citizens, and help veterans and military. There will be a 5K run and a one mile fun run. Both runs are open to everyone no matter level of ability. You can choose to either run or walk. This is the third year for the Lithia 9/11 run. The director of the Lithia-based 5k 9/11 heroes run, Beau Higgins, knew Manion personally. He was the commanding officer of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion he served in. Higgins said, “The most rewarding

thing for me I think is just remembering 9/11… and it’s important to remember what that day was all about.” This nonprofit charity run is about remembering 9/11 and the wars since. This includes all the veterans, first responders, civilians, and military. The foundation wanted this run to also unite communities. A large portion of the net proceeds raised from the run will go back into the community. The rest goes to the Travis Manion foundation programs for veterans and survivors and its Character Does Matter program. Higgins said “I think as a community it is easy to lose sight of that day; what was a momentous day in the history of the United States, and the 9/11 Heroes Run is an opportunity to remember, and share our story… and hopefully to energize the community to give back.” The race will take place at Park Square, 16144 Churchview Dr. in Lithia starting at 8 a.m. Registration through August 22 is $27.50 for 5K for an Individual, $17 for the 1 Mile, $90 Fun Run/Walk Family Pack of 4 and $24.75 for 5K Active Duty Military or First Responder. The price goes up on August 23. There is a 10 percent discount for active duty status, with a government ID presented. Yes, it’s back to school time already. Did you know that the Hillsborough County Extension Service has a School and Community Garden program coordinator? Lisa Meredith fills this role and is the person to contact. She has a list of resources that will help teachers and community garden leaders investigate available grant funding, can meet with you to evaluate your site conditions, make recommendations on what and when to plant, and provide you with materials to make the process easier to manage and navigate. They are an educational institution and don’t provide labor, but can provide the name of other organization(s) that may be able to assist you. School gardens are great because they help build self-esteem, encourage learning, provide interactive lessons, teach life skills, provide a sense of ownership, allow youth to learn where food comes from, and enhance science and environmental knowledge. Community gardens are beneficial because they provide access to fresh food, promote exercise and nutrition, work well for people with limited yard space, revitalize neighborhoods,

decrease crime and stress, provide an opportunity to connect with others, and control food production. Meredith has been involved with dozens of school and community gardens. Each one is unique and tailored to the style of the gardeners and serve the purpose of teaching how food is produced. School teachers are very innovative in using plants and gardens as teaching tools. Whether container gardening or utilizing the landscape around the school, these gardens show students how important plants are to butterfly populations and to us as consumers of what we grow. Playing For Charity At Annual Knights Of Columbia Golf Classic The Knights of Columbus Golf Classic Mother Seton Council #6724 is preparing for its fourth annual charitable round of golf. Even the sweltering heat and afternoon showers will not stray these dedicated golfers from this annual fundraising event, which will take place on Saturday, September 23 at The Bloomingdale Golfer’s Club. “The proceeds will be used for charitable events throughout the year,” explained Neil Waid, Warden of the Counsel. “Charitable organizations such as Citizens with Disabilities, Lopez School of Exceptional Students, the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital and Haley House along with various other local organizations are on the club’s list of recipients,” he continued. “Donations to support the homeless veterans and veterans’ families in need are also an organization that we help support,” said Waid. Tee off time will be promptly at 9 a.m. The fee includes a golf cart, range balls, beverages, breakfast sandwiches and lunch. Registration time will be from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. To add to the excitement for the day there will be a four-person

The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Brandon Class of 2017 will host its 18th Annual Casino Night on Friday September 8 at the Regent, which is located at 6437 Watson Rd. in Riverview. This year’s theme is a Black & White party. Casino Night is an annual fundraiser for Leadership Brandon, which is a 10month professional development program developed by the Brandon Chamber of Commerce. The Casino Night party features casino-style gaming, an open bar, DJ, and silent auction items. The event typically draws several hundred people, with popular raffle items like the Chest of Cheer, a 50/50 raffle, and the Tower of Beer. “Casino Night makes a great date night, or a girls/guys night out, and it’s a wonderful way to meet other businesses and network in the Brandon community,” said Melissa Baldwin of Leadership Brandon Class 2017. ets are available through Friday, September 1 for $50 per person and are $65 per person thereafter. The ticket price includes food, open bar and casino money. The gasoline engine vehicle was ‘road tested’ for the first time in 1893 by Frank and Charles Duryea, who then opened the first U.S. facility designed for volume motor vehicle production three years later. The internal combustionengine motor vehicle was then patented in 1895. At about this same time, Fred Ferman became sole owner of Tampa Cycle Company. In 1899, he and Tampa Cycle Co. employee Victor James crafted two vehicles from bicycle parts, one of them powered by steam, the other by a Frenchmade gasoline engine. The latter was the first gasoline car driven in Tampa. Ferman had already established his instinct for emerging industries. Intrigued by the 1901 C u r v e d Dash Oldsmobile Runabout, 28 year old Ferman applied for and won an Oldsmobile sales agency in 1902. Now,

both he and the Tampa area had its first auto dealership. Chevrolet was founded on November 3, 1911, and since then has produced over 200 million cars and trucks. Chevrolet awarded Ferman its first Chevrolet dealership in 1930 establishing it as Tampa’s Heritage Chevrolet dealer. A Chevrolet Motor Company executive whose internal memo noted Fred Ferman, Sr.’s ‘good name and reputation’ and declared, “... this is the best connection we can make in Tampa.” In 1931, Tampa’s newest Chevrolet dealer advertised its new location at 307 Florida Avenue in Tampa and changed its name to Ferman Chevrolet in 1933. Destiny Church, 2322 11th Ave. in Ruskin, has partnered with elementary schools in Ruskin to distribute Bags of Hope. The church became aware that there are children whose families have limited resources and sometimes they don’t get much to eat on a weekend. Volunteers at Destiny Church fill the Bags of Hope with several items for the children to receive on Friday when they leave school. The bag contains pudding, oatmeal cereal, water, Ramen noodles, cheese crackers and a fruit snack. A Destiny Church Life Group in Riverview began the program and it is overseen by Pastor Felice Proccacio. In addition to the Bags of Hope the church expects to expand its ministry to providing school supplies that might not be in the school’s budget and hopefully a landscaping project to improve outside areas for the children. Hawthorne Health & Rehabilitation Center hosts a monthly support group for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and caregivers on the third Thursday of every month. A variety of speakers will provide information on topics relating to swallowing, balance, walking, speaking, mobility, exercise, self-care, cognition, and memory, all of which can be impacted by Parkinson’s Disease. Hillsborough County School District Gears Up for 2017-2018 School Year District Welcomes New Educators For 2017-2018 Season

Hillsborough County Public Schools officials, including Superintendent Jeff Eakins, School Board Chair Cindy Stuart, as well as other School Board members and district staff welcomed nearly 600 educators last month to take part in the annual Hillsborough Educators Institute. The event, hosted by Gaither High School, was designed to assist teachers with gaining insight into the district and learning to be the most effective teacher in the classroom. Following the opening remarks, teachers transitioned into sessions organized by area, by school and by grade level. Day two, of the program offered participants a variety of sessions from increasing engagement in everyday classroom activities, classroom management and knowing your students through data. According to school officials the theme of the Hillsborough Educators Institute is “Learn, Grow, Thrive” and is the first opportunity for new hires to learn about the more than 212,000 students they will be welcoming in to their classrooms on the first day of

On an early June morning, I attended a Sierra Club walk at Eureka Springs, led by first-time leader Karen Michalski. Eureka Springs has a wonderful history. The amateur botanist, world traveler and Russian immigrant Albert Greenburg, in 1938, established a botanical garden with tropical plants around springs that fed a lush floodplain forest along Six Mile Creek. He later started the first tropical fish farm in Florida in the springs. In 1967, Greenburg donated the 31-acre site to Hillsborough County. Eureka Springs Park is Hillsborough County's only botanical garden. According to my research, poet Robert Frost and other famous personalities made it a point to visit Greenberg in the years prior to World War II. The gardens include the largest publicly owned collection of ferns in Florida, a rose garden, butterfly gardens, and an orchid room. The boardwalk winds through a lush floodplain forest of cypresses, tupelo, and towering maples. The Tampa Bypass Canal that connects the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness preserve with McKay Bay was designed for flood protection by

diverting floodwaters from the Hillsborough River. Unfortunately, construction of the 14 mile canal greatly disturbed the hydrology of the Eureka Springs, greatly limiting any flow. During my time at the park, I noted wonderfully vibrant butterflies and dragonflies, unusual beetles, and a number of plants, trees and flowers I had never seen before. The Yesterday Today and Tomorrow Plants (Brunfelsia) is a tropical plant native to Brazil with lush green foliage accented with unique blooms that change color. The flowers bloom first as a purple or violet bloom. The next day that same bloom is pale lavender and the next day it is white. The narrow canal that curves through the park is home to several glorious flowers, including vibrant pink water lilies. Michalski did a fine job, and when we finished we posed for a photo with the Sierra banner. All in all, it was another great day in paradise. Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay Program Posts Record Setting Day At Junior Nationals

Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay, a program of Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation, enjoyed the spotlight last month, after a record setting day during the National Junior Disability Championships. The tournament was held July 16-22 in Middleton, Wisconsin, with hundreds of athletes from across the country participating. The Adaptive Sports USA Junior Nationals is for athletes ages 6 to 22 with physical disabilities and is the oldest and largest continuously held competitive sports event in the country. When it was over the Hillsborough County team in its Small Team Division posted nine national records along with top team honors. According to the sports coordinator for Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay, Andy Chasanoff, the team’s three

In all, Eric Lowry, 17, of Land O’ Lakes, Danielle Kanas, 12, of Lutz, and 15-yearold Logan Krepop of Parrish won 18 gold, 11 silver, and four bronze medals.
