Dave & Busters Hiring Over 230 Staff Members Ahead Of October Opening

The popular chain Dave & Busters will be opening its first Tampa location in late October.

The location, which will be in the Estuary in Brandon near Topgolf, adjacent to Bass Pro Shops and will be the 103rd Dave & Busters to open nationwide.

The building itself will be over 40,000 sq. ft., and will host dining areas, games and a full sports bar. In a press release, a representative said that D&B Sports Bar will be an ideal place to watch all of the Tampa sports teams.

The new Dave & Busters is the first location in the entire Tampa area, said general manager Tim Johnson. With the nearest location in Orlando, Tampa residents will finally have access to one of the most unique experiences in the restaurant business.

“It’s everything under one roof,” Johnson said. “Great food, TVs, sports lounge with 200-inch projection screens, games — it’s fun.”

Twin Lakes Community Presents 8th Annual Art In The Park, Open To Public

Everyone is welcome to come to Zenia Park in the community of Twin Lakes in Valrico as they host the 8th Art in the Park on Saturday, September 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Twin Lakes in Valrico will host its 8th Annual Art In The Park on Saturday, September 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Art in the Park is set to take place in the beautiful Zenia Park, home of gigantic and beautiful old oak trees. Twin Lakes is located east of Lithia Pinecrest Rd. at the end of Bloomingdale Ave. The event is open and free to the community.

Both artists and vendors of all kinds are encouraged to attend and share their creativity with the community.

Artists and vendors can set up space anywhere within the 11 acre park. A fee of $10 is charged to non-residents to offset the cost of hosting the arts event.

However, there is no charge for Twin Lakes residents. Vendors must bring all of their supplies, including table, chairs and tent (not required). Electricity is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. This is a great bargain for artists and vendors.

Joanne Bialas, Chair of the Twin Lakes Communications and Social Activities Committee (CSAC) said, “The Twin Lakes of Brandon Home Owners Association, in conjunction with Lisa Harmon of Homewood Real Estate, are putting on the 8th Annual Art in the Park.

This has become one of Twin Lakes’ best social activities of the year with great participation from the neighborhood as well as the surrounding communities.” Bialas added, “In the past, we have had many different forms of art from homemade cookies to painted art to hang on your wall. We also have various food vendors and live entertainment. Each year about 50 to 60 various vendors and close to 500 people attend.”

Zenia Park is a perfect venue for an art festival of this kind. It is shady and beautiful and filled with oaks that are over 100 years old.

Bialas said, “As always, residents of Twin Lakes are encouraged to showcase their arts and crafts at no charge.

Non-residents are also eligible to reserve a space for just $10 payable on the day of the event.

Enjoy Family Fun This Fall At The Annual Hillsborough County Fair

This year’s Hillsborough County Fair, which runs Thursday-Sunday, October 19-22 and 26-29, promises to be a lot of fun for the entire family.

Fall is in the air; and as the temperatures begin to slightly dip, it is time to get out and enjoy the season.

The 2017 Hillsborough County Fair will again take place at the County Fairgrounds, 215 Sydney Washer Rd. in Dover from Thursday to Sunday, October 19-22 and October 26-29.

There will be lot of fun for the entire family. Check out exhibits featuring arts, crafts, photography and fine arts, along with an interactive butterfly exhibit and a lot of horticultural displays.

Local youth will show off their livestock in shows that will feature cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and rabbits.

New this year will be the Youth Market Turkey Show and Sale where fairgoers can bid via silent auction on a market turkey raised by the youth exhibitors.

Check out the STEM Exhibits, featuring science, technology, engineering and math exhibits and demos for kids of all ages. Hometown Hillsborough will feature interactive educational and historic exhibits. Local entertainment will include

Gospel Jams on Sundays from 2-5 p.m.

Free shows daily include the racing pigs, which will make you squeal in delight, a firefighter show and a circus.

New competitive events include a ‘Back to Your Roots’ gardening project for schools and youth, a Wheelbarrow Decorating Contest, and a Robotics Competition in the Arts and Crafts divisions.

The hours for the Fair will be Thursdays from 5-10 p.m., Fridays from 5-11 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m.- 11 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Gate admission price is $7 for adults. Students K-12 will cost $5, seniors $4 and children under 5 and military with ID are free.

Enjoy Dollar Days on both Thursdays, where the cost is $1 admission at the gate and most rides will be $1.

Armband specials for the rides will cost $20 from Friday through Sunday.

Special events will also be hosted at the arena costing $10 per event. If purchased in advance at one of the advanced ticket outlets, it also includes gate admission. A Rodeo will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21. A Truck and Tractor Pull will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 27 and 28 at 7 p.m. and a Demo Derby will take place on Sunday, October 29 at 3 p.m.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra To Perform The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) announced its highly-anticipated 2017 Winter Tour. Over the past 20-plus years, TSO has become a critically-acclaimed, multi-platinum, musical powerhouse, and its annual winter tour is a beloved, multigenerational holiday tradition. 2017’s tour, a completely updated presentation of TSO’s unforgettable The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, is set to begin on November 16 and will visit more than 60 cities, for 100-plus performances, before concluding on December 30.

Campo Family YMCA Brings On A New Teacher For Its Adult Spanish Class

A focus group called Hispanos Unidos at Campo Family YMCA started a Spanish class for its adult members 18 and up last fall. It meets in the conference room for an hour the 1st and 2nd Saturday of the month at 9 a.m.

Hispanos Unidos aims to work together and connect the whole community through their Spanish language and culture with service. Recently, the class brought on a new instructor named Analia Huber in June of this year. As a Latina, her previous experience portrayed as a good fit to teach this class.

Born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Huber spoke Spanish in her home.

Therefore, the language became very familiar to her. She has lived in the United States for more than 40 years.

When Huber moved to the Tampa area she joined Campo Family YMCA and Hispanos Unidos. She fortunately always had the opportunity to continue speaking Spanish in her jobs and neighborhoods.

Huber teaches beginner and intermediate level Spanish in her class.

Students will learn grammar, conver-

sational pieces, colors, alphabet and much more.

This class motivates me to continue to expand my knowledge of the Spanish language,” Wong said. She also recommends it to anyone interested in taking Spanish.

Huber hopes that students who attend her class get excited about learning the language of Spanish because it will expose them to a new culture and foods.

“I encourage people to not be afraid to know another language” Huber said.

Tourette Association Of Florida Offers Hyperbaric Medicine, Now In Brandon Staff Report Online And Traditional Support Groups Holistic Medical Care

The Rotary’s Camp in Brandon hosts the Florida Chapter’s Family Weekend for families affected by Tourette Syndrome. The weekend includes camping activities, seminars and opportunities for connection.

For decades, mainstream media has unfairly characterized Tourette Syndrome as the ‘cursing disorder’ where individuals involuntarily blurt out obscenities. While outbursts of inappropriate words can be a symptom, it only affects 10% of those with Tourette Syndrome.

So, what is Tourette Syndrome? The Tourette Association of America (TAA) defines it as a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by sudden involuntary motor and vocal tics. TAA estimates that 1 out of every 160 children between the ages of 5-17 living in the United States has Tourette Syndrome.

Founded in 1972, TAA is a nonprofit agency advocating for individuals affected by Tourette and Tic Disorders.

State-led chapters under the auspices of the national organization provide local support. Christopher Brown, the chairperson for the TAA Florida Chapter, said, “We focus on advocacy, awareness and support for our families. We have the Family Weekend in Brandon and other events around the state.”

In February, the TAA Florida Chapter holds its annual Family Weekend event at the Rotary’s Camp in Brandon. Families across Florida can connect with other families who are dealing with similar issues. The weekend camp offers miniconferences on topics like navigating a 504 Plan, an IEP, and other educational matters.

The TAA Florida Chapter also over-

sees support groups—both in person and online. Denise Graf, a Lithia resident and mother of an adolescent with Tourette Syndrome, recently discovered the Tourette Association of Florida Facebook group.

“The group has not only provided emotional support and insightful information but has also given us the opportunity to provide support with what we've learned along our journey,” said Graf.

Graf also mentioned that the start of the school year often brings increased stress to students with Tourette Syndrome. She explained, “It's a tough time for families as they grow concerned about how their child could become a target of bullying since the symptoms make them ‘different’—causing them to draw attention to themselves.”

With the hope to remove stereotypes, TAA initiated a program called Youth Ambassadors. The program trains adolescents with Tourette and Tic Disorders to address and educate elected officials, peers, and schools about the disorder. The goal is to shed some light to this frequently misunderstood disorder.

Students, Teachers And Parents Focus On Back To School Safety, Healthy Meals And Solar Eclipse Publix Benefits Hillsborough Schools Students

Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins and School Board members will join forces with Todd Jones, CEO and President of Publix Super Markets and Tina Johnson, Treasurer of Publix Super Markets Charities, on behalf of HCPS students and families.

In a major announcement of a partnership at Mort Elementary, 1806 E. Bearss Ave. in Tampa, the trio committed to make a significant donation to support basic needs of area students.

Publix, the largest employeeowned grocery chain in the United States, committed to identify eight area schools to receive assistance.

School officials said that more than 64 percent of students in Hillsborough County Public Schools qualify for free and reduced price meals. The district is already providing free breakfast for every student, regardless of income.

“Breakfast and lunch at school are often the only reliable meals students receive throughout the day,” HCPS spokesperson Tanya Arja wrote in a recent press release, adding that hunger is a serious concern across Hillsborough County.

Students who are hungry have trouble concentrating and a lack of a healthy, nutritious meal can affect a student’s emotional, social and cognitive learning.

Superintendent Gives Back To School Safety Tips

In a recent video presentation Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins shared a number of safety tips with parents and students.

Safe Routes to School (SRS) a national, state, and county-wide effort is designed to promote walking and biking to school and making walking to school, safe, popular, and fun for families.

According to school officials the efforts is to help decrease traffic congestion around schools and increase safety, academic performance and wellness for HCPS students, HCSO Transportation Department has collaborated with Hillsborough MPO School Transportation Work Group (STWG) chaired by Board member Cindy Stuart.

Brother Kicking Duo Adds To Armwood Football Team

Football is a game known to form brotherly bonds, but for Adrian and Luis Olivo, who already have that bond, football just deepens their connection. The chemistry between the two helps them trust each other on the football field as a tandem kicker and long snapper.

The boys are both playing in their first season with perennial powerhouse Armwood High School after transferring from Plant City. This will also be their first season playing football together on the same team.

Adrian started playing football as a freshman at Plant City three years ago when one of his friends urged him to try

out for the team. His background as a soccer player helped him make the transition to football as a kicker. “It came easily for me,” Adrian said. “It clicked right

away.”

When Adrian starting playing football his brother Luis also became interested as well. The duo sought extra guidance to help them improve upon their techniques.

Coach Tom Feely, a long time kicking, punting and long-snapping specialist, and father of former NFL kicker Jay Feely, became their mentor. Feely’s track record made it an even better fit. He has coached every Armwood kicker since 2004, including Wes Skiffington, who was a three-time college All-American kicker at Stony Brook. Feely immediately saw potential in both boys, Adrian as a kicker, and Luis as a long snapper. “Both of

them were enthusiastic, coachable and hard workers,” Feely said. “Being coachable is critical to becoming a great athlete.”

Luis’ was an offensive lineman at Plant City, but with a little convincing from both his brother and Coach Feely, the sophomore changed his position to long snapper, making the brothers a tandem.

Along with their good friend and holder, Warren Thompson, the trio has had great success working together. “It means a lot

to me to be able to play with my brother,” Adrian said. “I feel like every time I’m going to kick, I have confidence that I will do well because I have Luis snapping to me and Warren holding for me.

Armwood opened its season against Tampa Bay Tech, winning in blowout fashion 35-12. In that game Adrian, the junior kicker, made all five of his extra points and Luis was perfect on all of his snaps. The brothers are looking forward to winning many more games at Armwood this season, as well as having individual success and helping their team win. “This season I want to build on my relationships with my teammates,” Adrian said. “My goal is to be one of the best kickers in the state and also win a state championship.”

Adrian and Luis hope to play in college together, and maybe one day, make it to the NFL. As for now, they just want to enjoy their last two years of playing high school football together. “This means a lot to me because not everybody gets to play high school football with their brother,” Luis said.

Music Showcase And FAOPA Offer A Great Fall Lineup Of Groups And Workshops on Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

High school aged students can participate in a not yet named production as part of the Showcase Players.

They meet on Saturdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Their performance will be held in January.

Students, ages 7 and up, who like to sing can try out for Show Choir which meets on Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Show Choir combines music from all genres and decades with choreography. Students gain stage presence, ear training and have fun performing with a singing team.
