Tampa Jeep Krewe Spends $30,000 On Toys For Christmas In July Project
By Mia Cafaro
Members of the Tampa Jeep Krewe pose with $5,000 worth of toys bought for children at St. Joseph's Hospital.
they raised money through raffles and community events such as Yappy Hour and bowling at The Alley. The drive was organized by Teri Smith and Lisa Wheeler, the co-leaders of event coordination for the Tampa Jeep Krewe, with the help of many other members. This is an important cause because children stuck in the hospital often miss birthdays and Christmases at home. The Christmas in July project can be participated in by any business, individual or organization that wishes to help out. St. Joseph’s passes out fliers each year detailing the types of toys that would be good for patients to use. The unique aspect of this project is that the children get to take the toys home when they are discharged. “It’s not really like these are donations to the hospital, they are donations to the kids. It’s all for the kids,” said Wheeler. To learn more about Tampa Jeep Krewe, go to www.thejeepkreweinc.com. To learn about the Christmas in July project, go to www.sjhfoundation.org.

On July 27, $30,000 worth of toys was delivered to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital by Tampa Jeep Krewe, a local Jeep organization of over 8,000 members. This was its fifth time participating in the Christmas in July fundraiser, which allows children in the hospital for long periods of time to receive ageappropriate gifts, which can serve to overcome the monotonous routine of the hospital and lift the spirits of patients. The members shopped for these toys at three different local Walmart locations on July 25, spending a total of about $16,000. They cleared the shelves of the Walmarts on Bloomingdale, Brandon, and Dale Mabry. The volunteers from the Tampa Jeep Krewe who came to shop were sorted into several categories, such as toddler toys, electronics, and crafts. All of the volunteers were enthusiastic and came ready to fill their carts to the brim. The Tampa Jeep Krewe spent three months collecting the money and toys to achieve its goal of a $30,000 value. At each of the gatherings and socials members collected toy donations, and

Time to Put Excess Cash to Work?
Melissa L Haskins Financial Advisor
You’ll always want to base your investment decisions on your own needs and goals. But there may be times when you might consider adjusting your portfolio because of risks and opportunities. Now may be one of those times. Here’s some background: In recent months, the Federal Reserve has raised short-term interest rates several times, and given its generally favorable outlook on the economy, it has indicated it may continue bumping up interest rates gradually over the next year or so. The Fed doesn’t control long-term interest rates, but these rates often follow the lead of short-term movements. However, longer-term rates haven’t yet risen as much as shorter-term ones, which means the difference between short- and long-term rates is relatively small, historically speaking. This doesn’t mean you should make drastic changes to your portfolio. You still need to stick with the asset allocation that’s suitable for your situation, which typically involves owning a certain percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks, and a certain percentage of fixedincome securities, such as bonds. However, if you do have space in the fixed-income part of your portfolio, you may find the higher interest rates offered by short-term bonds and certificates of deposit (CDs) to be attractive. To take advantage of this opportunity, though, you will need to have the cash available to invest. Some people hold too much in cash, waiting for interest rates to rise, or as protection against the risk of a market decline. But holding excess cash involves its own risk – the risk of not investing. So, if you have your cash needs covered, you may want to consider investing any excess cash.
To determine if you are holding excess cash, you'll need to review your entire cash situation. For example, do you have enough cash, or cash equivalents, to create an emergency fund of three to six months’worth of living expenses? This fund can be vital in helping you pay for things like a major car repair or an unexpected medical bill without dipping in to your long-term investments. And, of course, you need enough liquidity to provide for your lifestyle, including your regular spending needs – your mortgage, utilities, groceries and so on. Also, you may want to set aside enough cash for a goal you want to reach in the next year or so, such as a vacation. But if you have taken care of all these needs and you still have excess cash, you may want to consider putting this cash to work, possibly by investing in short-term fixed-income vehicles now being issued at higher interest rates. And keep in mind that regardless of where interest rates are going, bonds and other fixed-income investments can offer some key benefits to investors. In addition to providing a source of regular income, these types of investments can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. While bonds can, and will, fluctuate in value, they typically can provide more stability to your portfolio and tend to behave differently than stocks over time. After years of historical lows, shorter-term rates now have risen to levels that are more attractive to investors. Take the time to review your situation, perhaps with the help of a financial professional, to determine if taking advantage of these rates may be appropriate for you. We Asked Residents To Adopt Local Pets And They Responded
The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center has been awarded $10,000 by a national animal welfare group after residents adopted more than 500 dogs and cats in less than 10 days this summer. The Best Friends Animal Society offered to pay for all adoptions at participating shelters, including PRC, from June 26 through July 3 as part of an effort to find homes for 10,000 pets across the country. Residents adopted 518 pets from PRC during that time, more than at any other shelter of its size. That distinction earned the shelter a $10,000 prize from Best Friends, which PRC officials will use to increase adoption rates and improve the lives of dogs and cats. The Pet Resource Center is the only open-admission shelter in Hillsborough County, meaning it accepts dogs and cats regardless of breed, size, or medical condition. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 7p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.

9/11 Heroes Run Remembers Victims And Benefits Families By Kate Quesada
The annual Lithia 9/11 Heroes Run with start in FishHawk’s at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept.15.
FishHawk area residents are invited to remember the victims of 9/11 while getting exercise and helping families of veterans and fallen heroes next month. The annual Lithia 9/11 Heroes Run will take place on Saturday, September 15 in FishHawk Ranch with both a 5K and a one-mile fun run. Race organizer Beau Higgins is expecting 400 runners at the event which will start and finish in FishHawk’s Park Square and will mean that roads in the surrounding area will be closed from approximately 7:45-9 a.m. “The annual race will unite the community to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11, as well as honor our military and first responders that serve our country and communities,” said Higgins. The Lithia race is one of many 9/11 Heroes Runs around the world in which more than 30,000 people participated last year. Proceeds from the local race, which raised close to $4,000 in 2017, will benefit the Travis Manion Foundation which empowers veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future gen-
erations. The foundation, named after Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion who was killed by a sniper in Iraq in April 2007, also donated $1,000 to Seeds of Hope to help local flood victims after Hurricane Irma in 2017. A FishHawk resident, Higgins served with Manion in Iraq and was inspired to work with the foundation to make sure that his legacy
lives on. “Before his final deployment, Travis visited Rescue One in New York City, famous for losing almost all their men on 9/11, and returned home with a deeper passion about why he was fighting in Iraq,” said Higgins. Local sponsors for the event include Philly Pretzel Factory, GTE Financial, PESCO Energy, Boksa Marine Design, Mission BBQ, Amici’s Pizza, George Shea Realty and Pinch a Penny. “Knowing that so many people gave their lives during the 9/11 attacks touched my brother Travis in a way that would forever change him,” said Ryan Manion Borek, President of Travis Manion Foundation. “Six years after 9/11, my brother also gave his life for his country, so every year we gather communities together to run a 5K, not just to honor the fallen, but to continue the legacies of character, leadership and service that they left behind.” To learn more and register for the race visit www.travismanion.org.

Living Gluten Free Café And Market Comes To Brandon By Tatiana Ortiz
People who cannot consume products that contain gluten, whether it be health issues or other reasons, might find it difficult when it comes time to grocery shop or dine out to get foods without it. Living Living Gluten Free Café and Market Gluten Free owner Frank Café and Pandolfo (on the Market, which right) hands Christine recently opened Greig (on the left) her Iced Chai Latte that in Brandon, she ordered. caters to those with a gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease by selling a variety of beverages and foods that do not consist of gluten. Owners Frank Pandolfo and his wife Pamela Pandolfo who reside in Valrico established Living Gluten Free Café and Market in June of this year. This idea came into fruition after the Pandolfo’s visited a store in Italy last summer that sold gluten free products such as pastries and more. The Pandolfo’s decided to try that concept here since their son and granddaughter have Celiac Disease. “We offer items that do not contain any gluten and this would be our premise,” Frank Pandolfo said. This 1,400 sq. ft. building can seat 12 guests comfortably in the café area and provides free Wi-Fi as well. The café here
sells a variety of flavored coffees and teas from Joffrey’s Coffee and Tea Company such as espresso, chai lattes and much more. It also carries gluten free gelatos from a company called Stefano’s Gelato, which guests can choose from a number of flavors too such as Italian Pistachio, Chocolate, and more. In addition to that, the café does sell gluten free chicken wings, pizza and breakfast sandwiches. The mild or hot chicken wings start at $8.19 for six pieces and prices do vary depending on the amount bought. With the grocery area people will see an assortment of European food products such as pastas from Italy, and desserts from Germany on the shelves, which can be purchased. Along with that, it does sell other items that one might discover at a grocery store, which includes peanut butter, cereals and more. For more information visit, https://www.facebook.com/livingglutenfreemarket/. It is located at 859 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. in Brandon. During the month of August, the community can see an exhibit of the talented artists who are members of the East Hillsborough Art Guild (EHAG). The Annual Members’ Show is on exhibit at the Bruton Memorial Library in historic downtown Plant City. The library is located at 302 W. McLendon St. in Plant City. There are 20 paintings created by nine local artists. The artists whose works are on display include Betty Fairbanks, Joyce Owens, Jessica Bradley, Christine Wynne, Colleen Justin, Loretta Burns, Nancy Driscoll, Rebecca Nipper and Callie Johnson. There is no specific theme for the exhibit. The artists each have a unique style and their work is lovely to view. Many of the artists have shown their work around the area and have entered juried shows. Several have won awards including Nancy Driscoll (Florida Strawberry Festival Fine Arts Show and the Hillsborough County Fair Fine Arts Show), Colleen Justin (two-time first place winner at the Florida Strawberry Festival Fine Arts Show) and Joyce Owens. Others, including Betty Fairbanks and Loretta Burns, are local art instructors. The mediums used by the artists
are as varied as their backgrounds. The mediums you will see in this exhibit include oil, watercolor, alcohol ink, acrylic and multi-media. The exhibit is on view now through the end of August and can be seen during the library’s normal operating hours. Loretta Burns is the current President of EHAG. Burns said, “Having an exhibit like this at the library is important for both artists and the community. It gives artists a chance to have their art shown in a public venue. For the people in the community who appreciate art, they have a local venue to see art,” said Burns. EHAG strives to have their members’ work shown in various venues around town. For instance, the community can see an excellent exhibit at the Classroom Gallery located in the 1914 Plant City High School Community Center located at 605 N. Collins St. in Plant City. Additionally, the Bruton Memorial Library is a great venue for local artists and organizations to display their artwork. In recent months, there have been a number of news stories throughout the country about high levels of lead in school drinking water. Hillsborough County School District has proactive efforts in our district to ensure the water that students and staff drink is safe for consumption. According to Chris Farkas, Deputy Superintendent of Operations, “Since last year, we have tested the water at 1,781 individual faucets, drinking fountains, and fixtures where water is likely to be used for drinking or cooking in 53 schools and district sites. We will continue testing the drinking water sources in our schools for lead until we have checked all 270 facilities in our district.” Since the average campus age is 50 years old, older pipes and fixtures do have a higher likelihood of adding lead to water. Federal guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency recommend action to fix an issue when lead is measured at 20 parts per billion or higher. One part per billion is equivalent to a single drop of water in a swimming pool. “Our district is using a stricter standard of 15 parts per billion. Any fixture

found to have lead levels of 15 parts per billion or higher is immediately taken out of operation and is not used again until the problem is fixed,” commented Farkas. Of the 1,781 samples taken so far, 26 have returned with levels higher than our guidelines. District protocol is to immediately shut down the affected faucet, correct the issue, and then retest the water to ensure the levels are in compliance before putting the faucet back into service. Options to correct an issue include replacing the fixture, adding water filters, or other plumbing projects. Alternative sources of water may be supplied to schools if needed. Each school may have dozens of faucets requiring testing, and results take time to come back from the testing lab. Results are posted as received at www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/watertesting. If a school has a fixture testing over the 15 parts per billion level, parents and staff will be notified by email and text message. National Opt-Out Site Offers Consumers Choice For Yellow Page Delivery
By Kelly Wise Valdes
If you're like 90 percent of Americans, you probably won't open the phone book even one time before the next year's book arrives. That is, if you even actually kept the phone book. Because technology and the marketplace has changed, coupled with the dwindling use of home phones, the phone book is becoming widely regarded by the consumer as irrelevant. With the increase in multiple technological advances, most consumers are finding what they need using Google, Siri or an app on their cellphone. Ask anyone under the age of 30 about phone books, you might as well have inquired the about using a card catalog or typewriter. Although there are exceptions in the older population, internet use among seniors has risen steadily over the last 15 years. Statics show that 67 percent of adults ages 65 and older say they use the internet on a daily basis. So, with all this available technology that easily allows people to search for names, phone numbers and addresses, why are phone books still regularly delivered to most American households every year? More than 500 million phone directories are printed and distributed every year, which represents nearly two books
for every American. Automatically printing phone books for millions of households across the country causes multiple issues. The printing produces roughly 3.57 million tons of greenhouse gases and consumes billions of gallons of water, regardless of the fact that recycled paper is generally used. Here are the phone books currently being printed and distributed in Hillsborough County: Tampa: 428,596 Plant City: 25,210 Brandon-Sun City: 125,459 According to the current statistics, approximately 521,000 of those households will throw away or recycle the phone books. This leaves about 58,000 phone books that are kept. And of those 58,000, there are no statistics that indicate how often the phone book is actually used. If you’re wondering if there is an alternative to receiving a phone book, you’re not alone. Most consumers are not aware that there is currently an OPT-OUT program in effect in Hillsborough County. For more information or to register to optout, visit the national yellow pages consumer choice and opt out site, visit www.yellowpagesoptout.com.
LET’S TALK SENIOR LIVING There are many positive reasons to consider a move to an assisted living community for a loved one, such as supervision and assistance with dayto-day care needs, improved nutritional intake, and increased social activity and engagement. However, it is not uncommon that a significant move such as this can create all sorts of issues to grapple with. There’s the loss of a home built and loved, along with most of the things that filled it. Possibly the move coincides with the death of a spouse. Or the move may be related to the sudden onset of an acute illness or accident. The stress that follows a move is called “Relocation Stress Syndrome”(RSS), a serious enough syndrome that in 1992, the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association added it as an official diagnosis. Relocation Stress Syndrome tends to show up in most of those affected right before a significant move and within the first three months of a move. Symptoms may include anxiety, depression and forgetfulness. Physical symptoms can crop up as well.
There are some steps you can take to prevent RSS in a loved one: 1. Involve your family member in the decision to move into a community. Have them tour the community if possible. Keep them informed of exactly what is happening each step along the way. 2. Whenever possible, try to recreate their old home in their new home. Bring photographs, bedding, their favorite recliner to add familiarity and comfort. Take pictures of their bedside table and top of their dresser and recreate it with the same items. 3. Acknowledge their fears, reassuring them that all the answers to their questions and concerns will be addressed. Encourage them to keep an open mind. The move to an assisted living community can effect in a very positive way the overall health and wellbeing of your family member. Having better understanding as to how the transition can affect them can be helpful during the process.

Next season, The Florida Orchestra will open its Student Composition Competition to all Florida universities and colleges with a music composition department, encompassing about a dozen schools, the orchestra said in announcing new guidelines for the 2018-19 season. Camp Gladiator is a four-week outdoor fitness camp, started in Texas that promises a fun and motivating environment where men and women of all ages and fitness levels can push themselves to reach their goals. Registered Voters In Hillsborough Have Three Methods To Vote: By Mail, Early And On Election Day...Every Vote Counts In the United States, voting is a right. However, in order to exercise this right, every voter in Hillsborough County must be informed and must know where to vote and how to do it. There are three methods- Vote By Mail, Early Voting and Election Day Voting. In order to vote, you must be registered by July 30 for the Primary, which is set for August 28. You must be registered by October 9 for the General Election which will be held on November 6. When you register, you are asked to select a party. That would be either Republican, Democrat or No Party Affiliation or one of the minor political parties. Florida is a closed primary state. This means that for the Primary Election, your ballot will reflect the party that you have selected. In other words, you vote only for the candidates from your party as well as non-partisan races such as Judge (County and Circuit) and School Board.
In the General Election, your ballot is based upon where you reside. You can view sample ballots for both the Primary and the General Election at www.votehillsborough.org. “One of the most important things we can do to conduct a successful election is to make sure that voting is easy and accessible for all voters,” said Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer.
VOTE BY MAIL Vote By Mail is the most convenient method. It is often referred to as Absentee Voting. you choose this method, your vote will be counted. You must request your Vote By Mail ballot by August 22 for the
Primary Election and by October 31 for the General Election. “We pay the return postage on Vote By Mail ballots and have drop-off boxes for those ballots at all of our Early Voting sites and offices, to make that as easy as possible,” said Latimer. If you choose this method, please visit www.votehillsborough.org for instructions. EARLY VOTING Early Voting is set up before both the Primary Election and the General Election. This year, Early Voting will take place for the Primary (August 28) from August 13 through August 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For the General Election (November 6), Early Voting will take place from October 22 through November 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In Hillsborough County, there will be 19 Early Voting sites open. “For our 2018 elections, we have added

three new Early Vote sites. During the Early Voting period, voters can vote at any of the 19 voting sites,” said Latimer. The new sites include the Valrico Recreation Center which was added to ease congestion at the Bloomingdale Regional Public Library. Please visit www.votehillsborough.org for a complete list and the times they are open. Early Voting is just like Election Day Voting. You must bring one or two forms of identification with your photo and signature on it. Acceptable forms of identification include Florida Driver’s License, state issued identification, U.S. Passport, Student ID, Public Assistance ID and more. ELECTION DAY VOTING Polling Places or Precinct, noted on your Voter Registration Card, are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. You can bring your sample ballot with you and use it while you vote. Whichever method you choose, remember your vote counts. “On Election Day, voters must vote in the polling place assigned to their precinct. Remember, Election Day is your last chance to vote. Because the majority of voters will have voted during the Early Voting period, we do not expect lines in the Election Day polling places,” said Latimer.
