Newsome Senior Headed To Merchant Marine Academy

By Michelle Caceres

Newsome senior Josh Costlow and his parents Christian and Camille Costlow celebrate his appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

While many high school seniors are still waiting to hear about college acceptances, Newsome student Josh Costlow has accepted a much-coveted appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). The USMMA, also called Kings Point, is one of five U.S. service academies and is located in Kings Point, New York, approximately 20 miles east of New York City. The Merchant Marine is the fleet of ships which carries imports and exports during peacetime and becomes a naval auxiliary during wartime to deliver troops and war material. Costlow learned about this oftoverlooked school after attending a Naval Academy leadership and baseball camp last year. He was scouted by the USMMA’s baseball coach, who contacted him the following week with an offer to play baseball for the school. For Costlow, who has been playing baseball for more than 12 years, his dream of playing at the college level and serving his country (his grandfather graduated from the Naval Academy) was within reach, barring one major hurdle. “The coach told me I could play for them but I would have to get an appointment to the school based on my academics,” said Costlow. Before he could apply to the Academy, he needed to earn a nomination from a U.S. congressman. He filled out an application for appointment by U.S. Representative Dennis Ross and was granted an interview by his advisory board. “The board seemed impressed

that I was an Eagle Scout,” said Costlow, who was given an appointment by Ross. After the appointment, Costlow completed the lengthy service academy application, complete with transcript, letters of recommendation and essay. Candidates must also complete a fitness assessment and med-

ical exam. Nothing could prepare him for the flood of emotions upon learning he had earned an appointment to the Academy. “In a short time I went from not even knowing the school existed to not only being admitted but being given the opportunity to play college baseball as well,” he said. “I’m excited to start the next chapter of my life.” Known for its rigorous academic program, USMMA requires more credit hours for a baccalaureate degree than any other service academy. Coursework is augmented by the Academy’s Sea year experience, which gives midshipmen the hands-on experience aboard working commercial vessels sailing to ports around the world. Upon graduation, midshipmen earn a Bachelor of Science degree, a U.S. Coast Guard license and an officer’s commission in the U.S. Armed Forces. Costlow, who will major in Engineering, will have a service obligation upon graduation but will be able to select from options such as a ship’s officer at sea, ashore in the maritime transportation field or as an activeduty officer in one of the Armed Forces. He reports to the Academy on June 26. His father, Christian Costlow, says his son has applied himself for years to working hard and improving his knowledge and skills while balancing his commitment to his faith. “This is his first reward,” said the proud parent. Alafia Elementary Hosts 10th Annual Seuss-sational Spring Fling

By Michelle Colesanti

Bring your family out to enjoy Alafia Elementary School’s Spring Fling on Friday, February 23 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

With the promise of warmer weather, Alafia Elementary School PTA will host its 10th Annual Seuss-sational Spring Fling and he’s invited the public to come out and enjoy the festivities. It will take place on Friday, February 23 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Students will get to enjoy carnival games with prizes. There will be five inflatables (including a bounce house for little ones and slides and obstacle courses for older kids). Alafia’s Relay for Life team will be auctioning off baskets. In the past there has been Lego, art and cooking as well as dinner and movie-themed baskets filled with gift cards to local restaurants. Having a good time can build up hearty appetites and there will be multiple food trucks on premises with something to offer for everyone’s taste. Food vendors will include: Sweet Baby

Donuts, Merica Food Truck, Manolito’s Cuban Shop, Kona Ice of Valrico, and Rosati’s Chicago Pizza. Wristbands will be on sale at the event. The cost is $10 for the first band and $5 each additional band. They will provide unlimited access to the inflatables and carnival games. The kids will also get to enjoy face painting, crafts and a balloon twisting artist. According to Deb Gibson, PTA member, “Alafia has been hosting this event for more than 10 years. It is a not-for-profit event and every year that I have planned it (the last three) our wristband sales have not covered the cost of the event. If, by chance, there is a profit the money goes back into the PTA general fund and will be used for things such as car line improvements and classroom technology.” Alafia Elementary is located at 3535 Culbreath Rd. in Valrico. Visit the PTA Facebook page at Alafia Elementary School PTA.

Randall Middle And Newsome High Schools Present ANGST: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety Join the Newsome High School (NHS) and Randall Middle School (RMS) PTSAs for an important discussion on the most common struggle facing our children today: anxiety. On February 7 from 6-7:30 P.M. in the Newsome High auditorium, the NHS and RMS PTSAs will hold a special screening of the documentary Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety. The joint PTSA effort has one goal: to open up a dialogue between local families, community leaders and experts. IndieFlix, a leading independent online streaming platform, along with its nonprofit arm, the IndieFlix Foundation (the producers of last year's PTSA event SCREENAGERS), is sparking a global conversation about anxiety through screenings of this brand-new documentary. The event will feature a viewing of the 56-minute film, followed by an informative panel discussion. This film is designed to address the silent and invisible mental health challenges of anxiety that have afflicted many of our kids and families. Angst not only addresses anxi-

ety but offers free, carefully vetted resources and tools. Producers Scilla Andreen and Karin Gornick have one goal: to start conversation and raise awareness around anxiety globally. Through candid interviews, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impact on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Michael Phelps, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of alltime. In addition, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, along with the help, resources and tools available to address the condition. Mark your calendars for the evening of February 7th and join the community in this global conversation and movement to help raise awareness around anxiety. The bottom line is that anxiety is treatable! For questions or information, contact Melissa Parker at programs@newsomehighschoolptsa.org or Kathi Hayes at President@RandallPTSA.org.

The trails of FishHawk Ranch are cleaner this month thanks to 16 local Girl Scout troops. They invited local Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout Troops and other service organizations to come out and help clean the ponds of FishHawk. Plant City Entertainment Presents The Drowsy Chaperone

LET’S TALK SENIOR LIVING

By Kathy L. Collins

Plant City Entertainment is excited to present the delightful musical within a comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone

Plant City Entertainment will present the Tony Award winning Broadway musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, beginning on the weekend of Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 4 at 2 p.m. Additional shows will be held on Friday, February 9 and Saturday, February 10 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m. The Drowsy Chaperone will be performed by an all-star cast of local actors at the Plant City Entertainment Theatre located at 101 N. Thomas St. in historic downtown Plant City. Tickets are $18 for adults (18-59), $14 for Seniors (60 and older) and students (under 18). Group rates are available and special pricing is offered for PCE members. Advance tickets can be purchased at Hardee’s Fashions located at 1501 N. Wheeler St. in Plant City. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.pceshows.com.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a show within a show. According to April Golombek, First Vice President for Plant City Entertainment, “The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show stopping song and dance after another.” The show begins with the lights low and a man in a chair appears on stage. He puts on his favorite record (a cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical). Then, the recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair continues to look on. The Drowsy Chaperone is a playful parody of a 1920’s musical comedy. The story revolves around a glamorous wedding of a glittering starlet who has left a successful stage career for love. The investor of the stage show she left tries to stop the wedding by sending in two gangsters disguised as pastry chefs. Mix in a vain Latin lover, a drunken diva and an eager best man and as Golombek said, “You have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.” The Drowsy Chaperone features a great Jazz Age score by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, and a lively, clever book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. Both the score and the book won Tony Awards in 2006. For information on The Drowsy Chaperone and how to support Plant City Entertainment, visit www.pceshows.com.

One of the primary reasons to consider an assisted living community for a loved one is all of the wonderful opportunities for social interaction with other residents and staff. Studies have shown that staying socially active provides numerous benefits to seniors and can be as important as staying physically active. Seniors who have an active social life tend to be healthier than those seniors that live isolated lives, with a reduced risk for chronic conditions like osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Socially active seniors also have less risk for depression and have sharper minds. Programming in assisted living communities should include a wide range of ways to keep residents engaged with others in the community. Some examples of these types of programs include: Music Programs such as Chorus groups, sing-alongs, Name That Tune Games, and karaoke can provide an outlet for expression of feelings, opportunity to reminisce with peers, and can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves with words. And most importantly singing is FUN!

Fitness Programs improve residents’ physical health and well being, which is so critical as we age. Examples include balance classes, walking groups, chair dancing, yoga, and bean bag toss. Learning Opportunities such as participation in a book club, jewelry making classes, painting lessons and flower arranging will not only provide opportunities for learning a new skill, but will also help residents stay intellectually stimulated. Communal Dining offers residents a group setting in which to enjoy their meals. Enjoying each other’s company during these times will often ensure more improved eating habits as well as three nutritious meals a day. Assisted living communities, in addition to providing assistance and supervision for day to day care, offer many opportunities for social engagement resulting in improved quality of life for our residents.

County Promotes Year-Round Preparedness During Severe Weather Awareness Week

One of the most dangerous storms of the 2017 hurricane season was Hurricane Irma. Its aftermath, including flooding, reminded residents of the importance of advanced preparation. Hillsborough County promoted year-round preparedness during the 2018 Severe Weather Awareness Week.

The message was simple at this year’s Severe Weather Awareness Week promoted by Hillsborough County officials as it urged residents to be prepared year-round by signing up for HCFL Alert, the county’s official mass notification system. Led by the theme, “Don’t Be Caught off Guard During Weather Emergencies – Stay Safe and Sign Up for HCFL Alert,” the event held during the week of January 22-26, focused on five distinctive natural hazards. The event covered lightning, marine hazards and rip-currents, tornadoes and thunderstorms, temperature extremes and the most often discussed in the region—hurricanes and flooding respectively. Last year saw one of the most active hurricane seasons in recent history, and Hillsborough County was no exception as Hurricane Irma brought tropical storm force winds and heavy rains to the area. Hillsborough County has joined state emergency officials in promoting Severe Weather Awareness Week, a time to focus on the state’s potential natural hazards and help people learn how to prepare and cope with them safely. “Planning is a big part of the emphasis, and Hillsborough County emergency managers urge residents

to prepare for the worst by having a plan before disaster strikes,” said Hillsborough County Emergency management director Preston Cook during last year’s preparation for the busy hurricane season. Cook added that it is easy to forget hazardous conditions year-round, and emphasized that while a significant effort is placed on promoting hurricane awareness, residents often focus their preparedness efforts only during hurricane season. “Other types of severe weather can be just as devastating,” Cook said. One specific safety tool to help stay prepared year-round is the HCFL Alert to receive time-sensitive, important messages about emergencies and non-emergency events in Hillsborough County. According to officials last year, Hillsborough County emergency managers used HCFL Alert to keep residents informed before, during, and after Hurricane Irma by providing realtime messages regarding sandbag distribution, evacuation orders, and flooding dangers. For more information about Hillsborough County’s Office of Emergency Management, and to sign up for HCFL Alert, visit HCFLGov.net/StaySafe.

The Popular Hole In One Donuts Opens New Location In Brandon The wait is over for Brandon area residents who have been looking forward to satisfying their cravings for freshly made donuts from one of the most talked about local shops, Hole in One Donuts. After nearly nine months of renovation, store owners, Sockchea Nam and his wife Monica of Cambodian descent, hosted a grand opening of the new shop located in the Lithia Square Plaza on the northeast corner of Lithia Pinecrest Rd. and Lumsden Ave. The couple, supported by their son Derek, have worked alongside as well as trained with family members and Hole in One Donuts founders, Than and Larry Pheng, who opened their first local doughnut shop in 2000 in Plant City. The long-anticipated early-morning opening of the new 1,800 sq., ft. shop did not disappoint the steady stream of customers. Big Cat Rescue Adds Rare Amur Leopard & Continues Advocacy Efforts Just over 25 years ago, Big Cat Rescue Founder Carole Baskin saved a bobcat kitten at an animal auction from certain death. Naming her Windsong, she had no idea of what the future would hold for both her and the bobcat, but that rescue stole her heart and set the wheels in motion for what would eventually become Big Cat Rescue. Big Cat Rescue’s care for cats that were once abused and can’t live in the wild is near ‘purr’fection. It currently is the ‘fur’ever home to 70 cats. Local Firefighters Team Together To Create American Flags From Firehoses

By Nick Nahas

Dave Burton started his business, Firehouse Designs, in early 2016 after he created an American flag out of repurposed firehose for the Temple Terrace Fire Department. He got such a great response from his fellow firefighters that he decided to make several more flags and put them in a craft show. After a very successful show, the business took off. According to Burton, making these flags has been a fire service tradition for many decades. This inspired him to make a flag for his own fire station, where he currently serves. Burton forged a partnership with a fellow firefighter, Andy Muzzy. Together they have created many flags. Both work for the Temple Terrace Fire Department, Muzzy for 16 years as a captain, and Burton for three as a firefighter paramedic. Burton previously did some firefighting in the Navy before moving on to banking after leaving the military. He went to school at Hillsborough Community College to become a firefighter and later began his career. Muzzy was inspired by his firefighter family in New York to continue the family tradition to join the same profession. “It was in Photo courtesy of Andy Muzzy and Dave Burton my bloodline to pursue a Dave Burton and Andy Muzzy’s flags vary in size and color. career in the fire service,” Muzzy said. chase them or retired hoses are the flags are made from used, out-ofAccording to Burton, 95 percent of service, firehoses. “Every single flag is unique. The dyeing process and the way that the hose is laid out on the flag, and the way that the stars are put on there, it’s all done by hand and they are all individual to themselves.” The dyed hose is laid on the flag and the stars are individually spray painted on with a single template. Firehouse Designs has not only made a name for themselves in the local area, but all over the country as well. They have shipped flags to almost every state in the country. Their goal is to build up their local following in Tampa. They have donated 20 to 30 flags to raise money for charity as well, including for the Honorary Mayor of Brandon, the charity golf tournament for the Tampa Fire Museum, a Tampa soccer club and an event for Shriners Hospital, as well as for Old Fire Station #5 for children of soldiers who were killed in action. The price range varies from flag to flag. If you are interested in buying a flag, you can view Burton and Muzzy’s work and get in contact with them through their Facebook page, Firehouse Designs. If you would like to donate a firehose to Burton and Muzzy, contact them through Facebook as well. The pair also sells flags at the T. Marie’s Sunday Morning Market at the corner of Lithia Pinecrest and Bloomingdale in Valrico.

2018 Florida Strawberry Festival Is About “Building New Memories!”

By Michael Smith

The theme for the 83rd annual Florida Strawberry Festival, March 1-11 in Plant City, is “Building New Memories!” This year, the festival has added new bleacherstyle concert seating that will accommodate 9,200 total guests, is closer to the stage and will be more comfortable for guests, Festival President Paul Davis said. Another change with the GT Grandstands construction project is that the event will no longer offer free seating to headline shows. “This was an extremely difficult decision for us,” Davis said. “But we absolutely had to construct new seating. And when you start crunching the numbers, there was just no way economically for us to offer free seats any longer.” Davis said this year’s theme “points to the new entertainment venue we’ve constructed. But most of all, we want our guests to know we’re in the business of continuously making new and better memories for families.”

“We’re so excited about our visitors having a brand new experience with our new entertainment

seating and the added vendor building,” he said. “It is our desire for our

guests to make lifelong memories with their loved ones at the Florida Strawberry Festival.” Each year, more than 500,000 visitors enjoy the festival’s headline entertainment, youth livestock shows, exhibits of commerce and its signature strawberry shortcake. Reba McEntire, The Band Perry, Josh Turner, Trace Adkins, Earth, Wind & Fire, Big & Rich featuring Cowboy Troy, and Brad Paisley are among the headline entertainment artists who are scheduled to perform on the Wish Farms Soundstage this year. To purchase tickets, visit www.flstrawberryfestival.com or the Amscot Main Ticket Office located at 2209 W. Oak Ave. in Plant City or call 754-1996. Festival gate admission, located at 303 N. Lemon St., is free for ages 5 and under, $5 for ages 6-12 and $10 for ages 13 and over. Tickets for each concert are sold separately and do not include festival gate admission.

Honda Civic Type R Delivers A Punch

THE RIDE: Four-door, four-passenger 2017 Honda Civic Type R Touring hatchback. DOWN THE ROAD: It’s the fastest (0 to 60 mph in 5.4 secs) and most powerful Honda. Launched in 1997 in Japan, the Civic Type R is a dream car for heavy pedal-to-the-metal drivers. With a race-bred chassis, the aggressive hatch displays amazing agility, power and response. The credit of course goes to the robust engine with unique aero and cooling capabilities. TECH & PERFORMANCE: The 2.0-liter DOHC turbocharged inline-4 engine blasts off 306 horsepower @ 6500 rpm and 295 pounds-feet of torque @ 4500 rpm. It is mated to a sprightly 6speed manual gear box that provides smooth upshifts and quick downshifts. Absorbing noise vibration is the dualaxis front strut and multilink rear suspension with dampers and anti-roll bars. The dual-pinion electric-power steering feels sharp and precise. A brake hold button near the shifter enables the car to stand still up or down a hill till the driver presses on the gas. LOOK & FEEL: It’s got the look, the daring look we must say, with an air scoop on its aluminum hood merging with horizontal LED headlights and centered red “H” and Type R badges. At the rear, nobody can miss the massive wing spoiler and triple exhaust tips. Get behind the wheel and you realize instantly that this is a race-inspired ride with the rounded aluminum shifter knob and well-bolstered sport seats with red/black suede fabric and double red stitches. The black/red theme resonates

throughout the cabin. The center console hosts a Type R serial number plate (our car was No. 932). A MultiInformation Display (i-MID) includes a 7inch LCD screen that displays readings for phone, audio, trip computer and navigation. Also standard are dual auto a/c, 540-watt audio system with subwoofer, sport pedals and a 60/40 split fold rear seat. SAFETY FIRST: Dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, fourwheel antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, Vehicle Stability Assist, traction control, side-impact door beams, front/rear crumple zones, limited slip differential, rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights are standard. OUT THE DOOR: $33,900, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges. BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 245/30ZR21; wheelbase, 106.3 inches; length, 179.4 inches; weight, 3,117 pounds; fuel capacity, 12.4 gallons; city, 22 mpg; highway, 28 mpg; Web site, www.honda.com WHY DIG IT: It’s agile, quick, athletic and lively, fun to rev and delivers a punch or two. Just what you would expect of a race car. The only snag, if you can call it that, is finding one at your dealership for the listed MSRP! Good luck with the search. Good Samaritan Mission Goes Mobile—Plus, A New Location For Its Annual Salsa Festival

By Amanda Boston

Established in 1984, the Good Samaritan Mission (GSM) is closing its doors in Wimauma and going mobile. Through the transition, the ministry will continue to serve its original purpose—to improve the quality of life for those in the community through the knowledge of the Gospel and life skill classes. As GSM streamlines its ministry, it will relocate its administrative offices to Sun City. Reverend Cruz believes God is behind the organization’s transformation. “We are seeing more and more centers and businesses opening their doors for us to come in and teach at their facilities, fully aware that we are a Christian organization,” said Reverend Cruz. “We've seen, first-hand, an overall hunger for the message of the Gospel. We are

excited to be part of spreading His Word throughout the community." Amid its transition, the sixth annual Family Salsa Festival will still go on, but it will be held at South Bay Church in Riverview. So, if you like salsa and wish to support GSM, mark your calendar for Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. All proceeds will go toward programming and operational expenses. The Family Salsa Festival is a free event and a celebration of community and all things salsa. The festival will feature food trucks, live entertainment, a kids zone with games and activities, salsa dancing, craft vendors, and of course, the sampling of salsa. If you would like to participate as a vendor, salsa dip maker or provide entertainment, please contact Kacey Folger, the community engagement coordinator at 240-4107. South Bay Church is located at 13498 US Hwy 301 S. in Riverview. For more information about the festival, visit familysalsafestival.com. To learn more about GSMobile, visit www.gsmission.org. Congratulations To Grace Christian JV Volleyball Who Claims State Title

The Grace Christian libero serving the ball.

The Grace Christian volleyball program is on the rise after going undefeated (17-0) and claiming their first JV state championship in school history, and making a state tournament appearance on varsity, going 20-2 overall. The program is lead by third-year volunteer Head Coach Sean Welton. He has four children that have already graduated from Grace Christian, and has three more that currently attend the school. His daughter Jasmine Welton, was primarily on JV this past season, with some appearances on varsity, and his older daughter, Amarrie Welton, was a standout on varsity. The JV team was lead by freshman outside hitter Brea Simmons, sophomore setter Grace McKeen and 8th-grade middle blocker Jasmine Welton. Jasmine Welton was named MVP of the state championship game when they defeated defending state champ Brush Arbor Christian School. They all expect to make a big impact on varsity next season. “I enjoyed having success from working hard, and next season, I want to help var-

sity win a championship,” Jasmine Welton said. Welton hopes to play for college volleyball powerhouse Penn State in the future. When asked what winning the JV state championship meant to him, Sean Welton replied, “I think it shows

the young ladies that hard work pays off. We talk about how our Christian attitude and effort affects our Godgiven ability. They worked really hard at both and played well as a team. It’s a reward for that hard work.” The varsity team lost to Heritage

Christian School in four sets. Heritage Christian has now won two state championships in back-to-back years. Grace Christian was led by junior outside hitter Jazmin Spencer, junior outside hitter Amarrie Welton, junior setter Grace Pukas and junior middle blocker Shelby Salinas. Grace Christian also went to nationals for the second year in a row and moved up from division III to division I, finishing seventh out of 50 teams in Division I. “The team goal is to win the State Championship, and my individual goals are to continue to grow as a volleyball player and leader on the team,” Amarrie Welton said. Several of the players will play club volleyball in the offseason to hone their skills. The team wants to continue to get better. “We would like to go back to state and win, of course, but first and foremost, we want to represent Christ on and off the court and continue to develop our Christian character,” Sean Welton said.

Connection Undefeated Newsome Wolves Plow Through Regular Season Story by Tamas Mondovics

Newsome High School girls soccer team reached the 2017-2018 Class 5A District 6 playoffs with an 18-0 season. Last year, the program reached the state final but fell short of clinching the trophy.

Newsome Wolves player, Sophie Shrader practices penalty kicks ahead of a Class 5A District 6 semifinal game against Riverview.

Plowing through the regular season competition is nothing new for Newsome High School girls soccer team led by program head coach Kelly Jennings. Surviving the playoffs and reaching the state title game is another very common undertaking for the experienced team. The trick, however, is not only to reach the championship game but to bring home the trophy, some-

thing the talented Newsome team has yet to achieve. Entering this year’s district tournament with an undefeated 18-0 record was a clear sign of the Wolves confidence and commitment of another successful season. Befitting a champion-caliber team, the Wolves defeated Riverview 5-0 during the Class 5A, District 6 semifinal game. Playing without lead scorer Sophie Shrader, who completed the regular season with 42 goals, the Newsome Wolves relentlessly battered the Riverview Sharks’ goal,

leading to Sydni Dennis scoring the match’s first goal at the 10-minute mark. Jenna Oldham scored the second and third goals at the tenth and 53rdminute mark followed by Dennis and the fifth goal by Lauren Giles, setting up Newsome to face Plant City for the district final. In the other district semi-final, the Plant City Raiders defeated the Durant Cougars. After 1-1 of regulation and double overtime, the game ended with a win by penalty kicks. Plant City will face Newsome for the district title.

Plant City senior Aylin Gaona warms up just minutes before facing Class 5A District 6 rival East Bay. The Raiders defeated the Indians and were ready to play Newsome for the title.

Pleased with the girls' performance so far, Jennings wanted to give thanks to everyone who has been supporting the team this year. “I thoroughly appreciate all the love and support from the community,” said Jennings who is completing her 11th year as program head coach. WITH FLORIDA YARD EXPERT Tips To Protect Landscape Plants From The Cold Plant the right plant in the right place. Plant what grows in our zone, 9B. Order a free copy of the FloridaFriendly Landscaping™ Guide to Plant Selection and Landscape Design at www.watermatters.org, under free publications. We are in the central zone in this Guide. Maintain a three-inch layer of mulch which regulates soil temperature and protects plant roots. Don’t encourage new plant growth (fertilizing or pruning) which is more prone to cold damage. Fertilization is needed during the growing season, not during plant dormancy. Delay pruning until you see new growth and after the risk of future freezes pass, which is generally mid-February. Then prune beyond the black/brown stem coloration; or prune all dead/freeze damage making it easier to cover/protect the plant from another freeze. Note that damaged plant material insulates/protects live parts of the plant while pruning results in new growth. Relocate and group container plants together. Cover to the ground or move into your garage which is warmer than the outside temperature.

Pre-freeze, slightly moisten the soil. Moist soil releases more heat than dry soil. Watering the ground beneath the plant helps. Post-freeze, water thaws the frozen moisture in the soil and gives your plant a drink. Plant coverings are frost protection versus cold protection. Covers (sheets/quilts) should be in place before sundown, removed during daylight and must extend to the ground to capture heat from the soil and provide wind protection. Frost/freeze cloth may remain in place for several days as air and light flow through. Use a cardboard box large enough to fully cover the plant or make a frame over the plant; then place one of the above cover types over the frame. On most root hardy perennials, the foliage dies back to the ground; but come spring, new shoots will appear, and your landscape should thrive again. We hope you will stop by our teaching/demonstration gardens at the Extension office to view our plant selections. Check out our calendar of events at: http://hillsborough.ifas.ufl.edu/calendar.shtml. For horticultural assistance, contact the UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, 813-744-5519, or visit us at 5339 CR 579 in Seffner.

AMERICAN PICKERS To Film In Florida

Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their team are excited to return to Florida to film episodes of the hit series AMERICAN PICKERS throughout the region this winter. AMERICAN PICKERS is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique ‘picking’ on History. The hit show follows Mike and Frank, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them. As they hit the back

roads from coast to coast, Mike and Frank are on a mission to recycle and rescue forgotten relics. Along the way, the Pickers want to meet characters with remarkable and exceptional items. No More Late Fees At Hillsborough County Public Libraries

By Michael Smith

Beginning on New Year’s Day, Hillsborough County Public Libraries no longer charge late fines on overdue materials. While the library expects to save money by not assessing fines, Director of Library Services Andrew Breidenbaugh said that’s not the main benefit of this change. “The real benefit to the community will be the expanded access that we are able to provide. Libraries are not just about buildings and books; libraries are about people and community, and creating an environment where prosperity can be realized,” he said. “We want to remove as many barriers to access as possible and late fines can be an unnecessary barrier. The overwhelming majority of library customers borrows and returns materials responsibly and on time. For those who don’t, fines are not a deterrent – the only thing that is effective to getting library materials back is not being able to borrow more items.” Effective Monday, January 1, 2018: * Checkout loan periods have not changed, and the grace period has been extended from seven to eight

days. * You can check out a total of 35 items. * You can now place holds on 35 items at a time. * Any items that you have checked out will automatically renew two days prior to their due date as long as nobody else is waiting for them. If borrowers don’t return their overdue materials by the end of the grace period, their account will be locked and they won’t be able to borrow library materials or use digital resources OverDrive, hoopla, Freading, RB Digital and Lynda.com. Locked account holders can still use library computers and access some online databases. But once the item is returned, the current late fees of 20 cents a day and a maximum of $5 per item won’t be owed. Borrowers will still be charged for lost or damaged materials. If you find a lost item that you have already paid for, the item now belongs to you. No refunds will be issued for lost item payments. Fines posted to borrowers’ accounts prior to January 1, 2018 will remain. Fines can be paid online or at any library self-checkout kiosk using a debit or credit card. Payments by check or money order can be mailed to: HCPLC Library Administration, 102 E. 7th Ave., Tampa, FL 33602. For more information, visit hcplc.org or call 273-3652.

A beautiful bouquet of Valentine's Day flowers also can have serious health consequences for our pets. Curious cats and dogs often can't resist chewing and eating the leaves and petals of a florist's creations, which can cause digestive problems, heart problems, kidney failure, liver disease and/or seizures. That's why it is so important to display your flowers out of your pets' reach. Certain flowers can be toxic if eaten. If you suspect or can confirm that your pet has eaten plant leaves or flower petals, the identity of the plant or flower is crucial in determining its toxicity. You can either call the ASPCA'S National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435, or contact your local veterinarian. Common flowers and plants-including some often found in your own backyard-that are especially toxic and can be fatal if ingested include: Oleander, Lilies, Sago Palm nuts and seeds, Castor Bean, Azalea, Rhododendron, Chrysanthemum, Peace Lily, Tulip bulbs, Amaryllis, English Ivy and Autumn Crocus. Everyone loves to receive chocolates, flowers or plants on Valentine's Day. By making sure they are kept away from nosy canines or hungry felines, you can enjoy them safely with no fears of accidentally poisoning your pets. And remember to make the day special for pets by giving lots of love, extra attention and a few safe pet treats.

RD EST ECR PIN HIA LIT

February is a time of year when loved ones express their affection for each other by giving and receiving chocolates and flowers. It is nice to remember our pets on this special day, as well. However, it is never in the best interest of our four-legged friends to give them easy access to chocolates or flowers. As many of you already know, if a pet eats chocolate, there can be serious health consequences. Some of the common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea and even seizures. If you suspect that your pet has ingested any amount of chocolate, you may want to call your veterinarian to alert him or her of the situation. Depending on the type of chocolate eaten, you may have a life-threatening situation or you may just have a mess to clean up with no implications. Your vet may ask you to bring your pet into the office immediately so he or she can empty your pet's stomach and give medications to help reverse the effects. Milk chocolate often only causes diarrhea and vomiting, but the ingestion of even a small amount of dark chocolate or baking chocolate can, in some cases, cause death. It is better to give your pet a treat that is made especially for dogs or cats, and keep your own goodies away from curious paws and mouths.
