Thrilling Rides, Class County Music And Fun Fair Food Tops List For 2018 State Fair
Staff Report
The year was 1904 and the American Flag had 45 stars. Theodore Roosevelt was president and the average American earned 22 cents per hour. T.J. LaudBrown, the manager of the Tampa Bay Hotel convinced city founders to bring the South Florida Fair to the grounds of the Tampa Bay Hotel. For the last 114 years, the Florida State Fair has been a favorite for locals and visitors alike. It has been held at its current location since 1977. This year’s Fair will take place for 11 days from February 8-19. In addition to thrilling rides on the Midway, it wouldn’t be the Florida State Fair without educational and entertaining attractions and performers. Where – for the price of a movie ticket – can you see a sea lion, a spectacular Big Top Circus, cheer on your favorite porker at the pig races, feed a giraffe from your own hand, enjoy acts from TV shows like America’s Got Talent, watch an amazing bear show, and be thrilled by the dogs of K-9s in Flight? “We want both loyal patrons and those who have not yet visited the Fair to join us in making memories that will last a lifetime,” said Cheryl Flood, executive director of the Florida State Fair Authority. “The Sweets exhibit in particular will provide a fun and educational experience for all ages.”
Gates open Monday through Thursday at 10 a.m. Midway opens at 1 p.m. On Friday, Saturday, Sunday and President's Day, gates open at 9 a.m. and Midway opens at 10 a.m. The Fair is known for the latest and greatest fun food fare such as such as the Pizza Cone, Redneck Burger and Bacon Ice Cream. Kids will have a great time at the new Florida Farm to School Arcade, a
fun, interactive area where children will learn about Florida agricultural products. Join legendary, award-winning classic country icon Leroy Van Dyke and country legends T.G. Sheppard, Moe Bandy and Rhonda Vincent as they take you on a retrospective, nostalgic journey featuring America’s golden country music during the Country Gold Tour on February 14. Two shows will take place; 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. For ticket
information and pricing, please contact the Fair Box Office at 740-4640. While visiting the Fair, don’t miss Cracker Country, a rural Florida living history museum where you feel like you have become part of the past. It is open during Fair hours; a great place to create memories that will last a lifetime with your children or grandchildren. Hillsborough County’s Student Day at the Fair will be on Friday, February 9. Students enter free that day with a free Student Day ticket. Those in grades 6 -12 entering the Florida State Fairgrounds on Student Days after 6 p.m. must be accompanied by an adult, age 21 or older. An accompanying adult (maximum of one adult for each Student Day attendee) on Student Days shall be granted free admission when entering the Florida State Fairgrounds with a Student after 6 p.m. Starting 6 p.m., an adult may be allowed to accompany up to four Student Day attendees. Tickets for adults (ages 12 and over) are $9 in advance online and at participating Publix locations through February 7. Children are $5. Seniors ages 55 and older pay $7. Advanced Anyday Armbands are available for $30 and weekday armbands cost $20 and are valid only on February 8, 12, 13, 14 and 15. The Florida State Fairgrounds is located at 4800 U.S. Hwy. 301 N. in Tampa.

All My Might

By Debora Coty
It’s a common sight at strawberry harvesting time here in central Florida: dozens of hardworking people bending in the hot sun over rows of lush green plants freckled with red dots of ripe sweetness. If you’ve never paused a moment to observe fruit harvesters, you really should … they move with strength, agility, speed, and intentionality as intriguing as choreographed dancers. It’s pretty inspiring, especially to a softie like me who earns her bread and butter sitting in a computer chair wiggling her fingers. I would harbor a guess that strawberry-picking isn’t the dream job of most of the migrant workers swarming the fields, nevertheless they’re excellent at what they do. Not just good; not just competent … excellent. I’m completely mesmerized watching fingers fly from berry to flat as their hands dart from bush to bush. Then, when the flat is full, it’s swung onto one shoulder and sprinted down the long row of plants to the red trailer that serves as a collection depot. The worker – man, woman, or child – then dashes back (I mean open-throttle running ) to resume his/her place in the field. I’m told that payment is by the flat and picking time is often limited, so rushing is a necessary element of the job.
As I stand there watching people who work harder every single day than I’ve physically worked in my collective adult life, I feel that I’m witnessing a real life demonstration of Ecclesiastes 9:10: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (NASB). Whatever, it says. Regardless of the lowliness or loftiness of the job before you … scrubbing floors, changing diapers, running a country, chopping onions, flying airplanes, digging ditches, performing surgeries, picking strawberries. Even writing books. Whatever it is, do it with all your might. And be proud of the fruit of your labor. You’ll not only please your heavenly Father, but you’ll be infused with a strengthening dose of self-worth and purpose. As I pedal back home to my wellworn computer chair, I pray for motivation to achieve with my writing even half the level of excellence and effort I’ve just witnessed in a strawberry field. And it would serve me well to wiggle more than just my fingers now and again.

Good Samaritan Mission Goes Mobile—Plus, A New Location For Its Annual Salsa Festival
By Amanda Boston
Established in 1984, the Good Samaritan Mission (GSM) is closing its doors in Wimauma and going mobile. Through the transition, the ministry will continue to serve its original purpose—to improve the quality of life for those in the community through the knowledge of the Gospel and life skill classes. As GSM streamlines its ministry, it will relocate its administrative offices to Sun City. Reverend Cruz believes God is behind the organization’s transformation. “We are seeing more and more centers and businesses opening their doors for us to come in and teach at their facilities, fully aware that we are a Christian organization,” said Reverend Cruz. “We've seen, first-hand, an overall hunger for the message of the Gospel. We are
excited to be part of spreading His Word throughout the community." Amid its transition, the sixth annual Family Salsa Festival will still go on, but it will be held at South Bay Church in Riverview. So, if you like salsa and wish to support GSM, mark your calendar for Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. All proceeds will go toward programming and operational expenses. The Family Salsa Festival is a free event and a celebration of community and all things salsa. The festival will feature food trucks, live entertainment, a kids zone with games and activities, salsa dancing, craft vendors, and of course, the sampling of salsa. If you would like to participate as a vendor, salsa dip maker or provide entertainment, please contact Kacey Folger, the community engagement coordinator at 240-4107. South Bay Church is located at 13498 US Hwy 301 S. in Riverview. For more information about the festival, visit familysalsafestival.com. To learn more about GSMobile, visit www.gsmission.org. GSM is always looking for volunteers, especially instructors for the adult education program. To volunteer or donate, call 634-7136.

Local Firefighters Team Together To Create American Flags From Firehoses

Dave Burton and Andy Muzzy’s flags vary in size and color.
Dave Burton started his business, Firehouse Designs, in early 2016 after he created an American flag out of repurposed firehose for the Temple Terrace Fire Department. He got such a great response from his fellow firefighters that he decided to make several more flags and put them in a craft show. After a very successful show, the business took off. According to Burton, making these flags has been a fire service tradition for many decades. This inspired him to make a flag for his own fire station, where he currently serves. Burton forged a partnership with a fellow firefighter, Andy Muzzy. Together they have created many flags. Both work for the Temple Terrace Fire Department, Muzzy for 16 years as a captain, and Burton for three as a firefighter paramedic. Burton previously did some firefighting in the Navy before moving on to banking after leaving the military. He went to school at Hillsborough Community College to become a firefighter and later began his career. Muzzy was inspired by his firefighter family in New York to continue the family tradition to join the same profession. “It was in my bloodline to pursue a career in the fire service,” Muzzy said. According to Burton, 95 percent of the flags are made from used, out-ofservice, firehoses. They either purchase them or retired hoses are given to them by fire departments. “It has a history to it,” said Burton. “Every single flag is unique. The dyeing process
Designs has not only made a name for themselves in the local area, but all over the country as well. They have shipped flags to almost every state in the country. Their goal is to build up their local following in Tampa. They have donated 20 to 30 flags to raise money for charity as well, including for the Honorary Mayor of Brandon, the charity golf tournament for the Tampa Fire Museum, a Tampa soccer club and an event for Shriners Hospital, as well as for Old Fire Station #5 for children of soldiers who were killed in action. . The price range varies from flag to flag. If you are interested in buying a flag, you can view Burton and Muzzy’s work and get in contact with them through their Facebook page, Firehouse Designs. If you would like to donate a firehose to Burton and Muzzy, contact them through Facebook as well. The pair also sells flags at the T. Marie’s Sunday Morning Market at the corner of Lithia Pinecrest and Bloomingdale in Valrico.

Hannah – A Woman Of Patience And Character
By Kelly Wise Valdes
Throughout the Bible, there are many stories of strong and heroic women. In this series, we will explore a story of faithful biblical woman each month. With their strong faith, the women of the Bible continue to teach us how to live authentic, faith-filled lives. No matter what our circumstances are, we can find ourselves in their stories. The Book of Samuel tells us of a young woman named Hannah who was married to a man called Elkanah. They were very much in love; however, Hannah was infertile. It is speculated that because Hannah was unable to have children, Elkanah took another wife at Hannah’s request. At the time, this was a common practice. He loved Hannah more than his other wife, Peninnah, but Peninnah was remarkably fertile and gave birth to several sons and daughters. Elkanah was deeply in love with his barren wife Hannah, instead of the fertile Peninnah. Peninnah hoped that her ability to provide children for her husband would make him love her more than Hannah. This caused substantial grief for both women. One wife was barren and wanted children and one wife fertile and wanted love. One can sympathize with their pain. Instead of comforting each other, Peninnah’s jealousy caused her to torment Hannah, constantly mocking Hannah’s inability to become pregnant. This went on for years. However, Hannah demonstrated grace and dignity by holding her tongue and continued to pray for a child. One day, Hannah visited the temple and was in such distress that she mouthed her prayer silently and was seen by the priest, Eli. When he
approached her, she explained that she was praying for a child, and she promised God that if he gave her a son, she would dedicate him to the priest. God honored her diligence and patience, and Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son, Samuel. She kept him until he was weaned at about three years old. When the time came, she took him to the temple, just as she had promised, and dedicated him to God’s service in a special ceremony. Even at this stage, she could have redeemed her vow by paying a sum of money to the priests, but she kept her vow. Hannah continued to visit Samuel as he grew into a man of God. She was blessed with more children: three sons and two daughters. The Bible bears no more mention of Peninnah. Before Hannah, three other women endured the despair of not being able to conceive. Sarah was the first, followed by Rebekah and then Rachel. However, Hannah accepted God’s promise with unwavering faith. The other three did not. Hannah trusted God without doubt or concern. Hannah’s story teaches us that our faith in God allows Him to bless us. Her trust in God as she turned to Him, her deep desire for children and her faithfulness in bringing Samuel to God as promised are all evidences of God working in Hannah’s life. Every person experiences circumstances that cause grief. Many times, we simply don’t understand why the desire of our hearts is not met. But in the life of Hannah we see that God knows our hearts, that everything has a purpose and that trust in Him is never misplaced.

No More Late Fees At Hillsborough County Public Libraries
By Michael Smith
Beginning on New Year’s Day, Hillsborough County Public Libraries no longer charge late fines on overdue materials. While the library expects to save money by not assessing fines, Director of Library Services Andrew Breidenbaugh said that’s not the main benefit of this change. “The real benefit to the community will be the expanded access that we are able to provide. Libraries are not just about buildings and books; libraries are about people and community, and creating an environment where prosperity can be realized,” he said. “We want to remove as many barriers to access as possible and late fines can be an unnecessary barrier. The overwhelming majority of library customers borrows and returns materials responsibly and on time. For those who don’t, fines are not a deterrent – the only thing that is effective to getting library materials back is not being able to borrow more items.” Effective Monday, January 1, 2018: * Checkout loan periods have not changed, and the grace period has been extended from seven to eight
days. * You can check out a total of 35 items. * You can now place holds on 35 items at a time. * Any items that you have checked out will automatically renew two days prior to their due date as long as nobody else is waiting for them. If borrowers don’t return their overdue materials by the end of the grace period, their account will be locked and they won’t be able to borrow library materials or use digital resources OverDrive, hoopla, Freading, RB Digital and Lynda.com. Locked account holders can still use library computers and access some online databases. But once the item is returned, the current late fees of 20 cents a day and a maximum of $5 per item won’t be owed. Borrowers will still be charged for lost or damaged materials. If you find a lost item that you have already paid for, the item now belongs to you. No refunds will be issued for lost item payments. Fines posted to borrowers’ accounts prior to January 1, 2018 will remain. Fines can be paid online or at any library self-checkout kiosk using a debit or credit card. Payments by check or money order can be mailed to: HCPLC Library Administration, 102 E. 7th Ave., Tampa, FL 33602. For more information, visit hcplc.org or call 273-3652.

Live Like You Mean It Do We Share a Good Story? By Derek Maul “Take hold of the life that is truly life.” – (1 Timothy 6:19) Today’s column is about the opportunity each one of us has to share God’s wide-open invitation to “life that is truly life.” I’m thinking about this in response to some self-evaluation I had to practice this week. Here’s the backstory: When I’m not writing this column, I do some reporting, write books and prepare articles for a variety of websites. I also publish a regular column at www.derekmaul.blog for over 6,300 subscribers including readers from six continents and over 150 countries. Until I did the research, I didn’t realize how many people are listening and in how many places. For 2018 I decided to revamp my website. I needed a new design, a fresh layout, a new publication schedule and even a new title. Before I could do any of that, however, I needed to write a purpose statement – and that’s what I want to share with Christian Voice readers today. The bottom line for this blog has not changed from when I first started, I wrote. I want to communicate, clearly, a sense of the adventure that my life has become in response to following Jesus. And in so doing I want to
encourage those of you who are reading to accept God’s invitation too. I’m not sure any of us realize just how influential a voice we have. We may think we live quiet lives, but our reach is greater than we think. It’s easy to point our finger at people we perceive as influential and judge the message they share with the world, but the fact is that each one of us tells a powerful story via the way that we live, and love, and work and play. It may be a teen in Singapore reading my latest blog post; it may be a bagboy at the grocery who needs your encouragement; it may be someone listening to us talk with our kids in the park. Regardless, we’re telling our story. Does our story offer the kind of invitation we intend? Derek Maul has written for many news outlets, including the Tampa Tribune, The United Methodist News Service, All Pro Dad, FOCUS Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul and many other publications. These patients need to focus on their health and family not on cleaning their homes.” Custom Cleanups has agreed to help women battling cancer by cleaning two homes per month for four consecutive months at no charge. By Kelly Wise Valdes With the capacity to host 4,000 worshipers and a magnificent interior, the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal is a must-see when visiting this unique French city. The church is considered one of the most magnificent in the world with its grand and colorful interior and ornate ceiling. The entire sanctuary bursts of colors of blues, azures, reds, purples, silver and gold. The interior is filled with hundreds of intricate wooden carvings and statues. The stained-glass windows along the walls of the sanctuary are not biblical but depict scenes from the religious history of Montreal. With a history that dates back to the 1600s, the church has dramatically changed and grown. In 1657, the Roman Catholic Sulpician Order arrived Montreal. They founded the parish and dedicated it to the Holy Name of Mary. The original parish church of NotreDame was built on the site in 1672. By 1824 the congregation had outgrown the church. James O’Donnell, an Irish-American Protestant architect from New York, was commissioned to design the new basilica. The main construction work took place between 1824 and 1829; however, O’Donnell did not live to see his work completed. He died in Montreal in 1830. He was so moved by the experience that he converted to Catholicism just
prior to his death and is the only person to be buried in the church's crypt. When the exterior of the building was completed, it was the largest church in North America. The completion of the interior took much longer. Victor Bourgeau, a Canadian architect was commissioned to complete the interior 1872 to 1879. Of the hundreds of churches in Montreal, Notre-Dame's interior is the most stunning, with exquisite details carved from rare woods that have been carefully gilded and painted. The main altar was carved from linden wood and contains 32 bronze panels representing birth, life and death. Pope John Paul II deemed NotreDame a minor basilica during a visit to the city in April 1982. In 2000, it was the site of the state funeral of Pierre Trudeau, Canada's 15th prime minister, as well the setting for Celine Dion's 1994 wedding to René Angélil. The Notre-Dame Basilica has recently combined its beautiful architecture with a light and musical display. This spectacular show, AURA, unveils the richness of the Notre-Dame Basilica's heritage. Tickets can be purchased in advance. For more information, visit www.AURAbasiliquemontreal.com.
