Florida Strawberry Festival 2018 Theme Is “Building New Memories!” The theme for the 83rd annual Florida Strawberry Festival, March 1-11 in Plant City, is “Building New Memories!” This year, the festival has added new bleacher-style concert seating that will accommodate 9,200 total guests, is closer to the stage and will be more comfortable for guests, Festival President Paul Davis said. Another change with the GT Grandstands construction project is that the event will no longer offer free seating to headline shows. “This was an extremely difficult decision for us,” Davis said. “But we absolutely had to construct new seating. And when you start crunching the numbers, there was just no way economically for us to offer free seats any longer.”

By Michael Smith

Davis said this year’s theme “points to the new entertainment venue we’ve constructed. But most of all, we want our guests to know we’re in the business of continuously making new and better memories for families.”

“We’re so excited about our visitors having a brand new experience with our new entertainment seating and the added vendor building,” he said. “It is our desire for our guests to make lifelong memories with their loved ones at the Florida Strawberry Festival.” Each year, more than 500,000 visitors enjoy the festival’s headline enter-

tainment, youth livestock shows, exhibits of commerce and its signature strawberry shortcake. Reba McEntire, The Band Perry, Josh Turner, Trace Adkins, Earth, Wind & Fire, Big & Rich featuring Cowboy Troy, and Brad Paisley are among the headline entertainment artists who are scheduled to perform on the Wish Farms Soundstage this year. To purchase tickets, visit www.flstrawberryfestival.com or the Amscot Main Ticket Office located at 2209 W. Oak Ave. in Plant City or call 754-1996. Festival gate admission, located at 303 N. Lemon St., is free for ages 5 and under, $5 for ages 6-12 and $10 for ages 13 and over. Tickets for each concert are sold separately and do not include festival gate admission.

Local Firefighters Team Together To Create American Flags From Firehoses

By Nick Nahas

Dave Burton started his business, Firehouse Designs, in early 2016 after he created an American flag out of repurposed firehose for the Temple Terrace Fire Department. He got such a great response from his fellow firefighters that he decided to make several more flags and put them in a craft show. After a very successful show, the business took off. According to Burton, making these flags has been a fire service tradition for many decades. This inspired him to make a flag for his own fire station, where he currently serves. Burton forged a partnership with a fellow firefighter, Andy Muzzy. Together they have created many flags. Both work for the Temple Terrace Fire Department, Muzzy for 16 years as a captain, and Burton for three as a firefighter paramedic. Burton previously did some firefighting in the Navy before moving on to banking after leaving the military. He went to school at Hillsborough Community College to become a firefighter and later began his career. Muzzy was inspired by his firefighter family in New York to continue the family tradition to join the same profession. “It was in Photo courtesy of Andy Muzzy and Dave Burton my bloodline to pursue a Dave Burton and Andy Muzzy’s flags vary in size and color. career in the fire service,” chase them or retired hoses are Muzzy said. the flags are made from used, out-ofgiven to them by fire departments. “It According to Burton, 95 percent of service, firehoses. “Every single flag is unique. The dyeing process and the way that the hose is laid out on the flag, and the way that the stars are put on there, it’s all done by hand and they are all individual to themselves.” The dyed hose is laid on the flag and the stars are individually spray painted on with a single template. Firehouse Designs has not only made a name for themselves in the local area, but all over the country as well. They have shipped flags to almost every state in the country. Their goal is to build up their local following in Tampa. They have donated 20 to 30 flags to raise money for charity as well, including for the Honorary Mayor of Brandon, the charity golf tournament for the Tampa Fire Museum, a Tampa soccer club and an event for Shriners Hospital, as well as for Old Fire Station #5 for children of soldiers who were killed in action. The price range varies from flag to flag. If you are interested in buying a flag, you can view Burton and Muzzy’s work and get in contact with them through their Facebook page, Firehouse Designs. If you would like to donate a firehose to Burton and Muzzy, contact them through Facebook as well. The pair also sells flags at the T. Thrilling Rides, Class County Music And Fun Fair Food Tops List For 2018 State Fair Staff Report The year was 1904 and the American Flag had 45 stars. Theodore Roosevelt was president and the average American earned 22 cents per hour. T.J. LaudBrown, the manager of the Tampa Bay Hotel convinced city founders to bring the South Florida Fair to the grounds of the Tampa Bay Hotel. For the last 114 years, the Florida State Fair has been a favorite for locals and visitors alike. It has been held at its current location since 1977. This year’s Fair will take place for 11 days from February 8-19. In addition to thrilling rides on the Midway, it wouldn’t be the Florida State Fair without educational and entertaining attractions and performers. Where – for the price of a movie ticket – can you see a sea lion, a spectacular Big Top Circus, cheer on your favorite porker at the pig races, feed a giraffe from your own hand, enjoy acts from TV shows like America’s Got Talent, watch an amazing bear show, and be thrilled by the dogs of K-9s in Flight? “We want both loyal patrons and those who have not yet visited the Fair to join us in making memories that will last a lifetime,” said Cheryl Flood, executive director of the Florida State Fair Authority. “The Sweets exhibit in particular will provide a fun and educational experience for all ages.”

Gates open Monday through Thursday at 10 a.m. Midway opens at 1 p.m. On Friday, Saturday, Sunday and President's Day, gates open at 9 a.m. and Midway opens at 10 a.m. The Fair is known for the latest and greatest fun food fare such as such as the Pizza Cone, Redneck Burger and Bacon Ice Cream. Kids will have a great time at the new Florida Farm to School Arcade, a

fun, interactive area where children will learn about Florida agricultural products. Join legendary, award-winning classic country icon Leroy Van Dyke and country legends T.G. Sheppard, Moe Bandy and Rhonda Vincent as they take you on a retrospective, nostalgic journey featuring America’s golden country music during the Country Gold Tour on February 14. Two shows will take place; 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. For ticket

information and pricing, please contact the Fair Box Office at 740-4640. While visiting the Fair, don’t miss Cracker Country, a rural Florida living history museum where you feel like you have become part of the past. It is open during Fair hours; a great place to create memories that will last a lifetime with your children or grandchildren. Hillsborough County’s Student Day at the Fair will be on Friday, February 9. Students enter free that day with a free Student Day ticket. Those in grades 6 -12 entering the Florida State Fairgrounds on Student Days after 6 p.m. must be accompanied by an adult, age 21 or older. Big Cat Rescue Adds Rare Amur Leopard & Continues Advocacy Efforts

By Michelle Colesanti

Just over 25 years ago, Big Cat Rescue Founder Carole Baskin saved a bobcat kitten at an animal auction from certain death. Naming her Windsong, she had no idea of what the future would hold for both her and the bobcat, but that rescue stole her heart and set the wheels in motion for what would eventually become Big Cat Rescue. Big Cat Rescue’s care for cats that were once abused and can’t live in the wild is near ‘purr’fection. It currently is the ‘fur’ever home to 70 cats. were housed in was being replaced with a new one. Natalia is a16 year old Amur leopard, the first at the sanctuary. There are less than 70 Amur leopards remaining in the wild. Not only do big cats get to enjoy the premises which include a vacation retreat, but the sanctuary also fosters domestic kittens for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. Hillsborough Community Based Outpatient Clinic, the 7,163-sq.-ft. restaurant will seat 300. Doster commented that it will have the same look and feel as a typical Texas Roadhouse with localized touches in wall murals and decorations. Additionally, the management will be local residents. “The new restaurant will hire 200 employees, about 60 percent part-time and 40 percent fulltime,” said Doster. While most hiring will be done on-site about three months prior to opening, job postings for a kitchen manager and service manager are on the company’s website under careers. There are more than 400 Texas Roadhouse locations in 48 states and two foreign countries. The closest are located in Wesley Chapel, St. Petersburg, Lakeland and Bradenton. Texas Roadhouse, 13021 U.S. Hwy. 301, will be open from 4 p.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m.10 p.m. on Sunday. Riverview residents will soon have a new, sit-down national restaurant as Texas Roadhouse has announced plans to build a location on U.S. Hwy 301, north of Big Bend Rd. near the new Wawa. Construction will begin at the end of February with an anticipated opening date of July 9, according to the company’s director of public relations Travis Doster. Texas Roadhouse is a full-service, casual dining restaurant chain known for specially seasoned and aged steaks hand-cut daily on the premises and cooked-to-order over open gas-fired grills and endless supply of peanuts. The menu also features a variety of other items including ribs, chicken, pork, fish, burgers and an extensive kids menu. Most menu items are made from scratch and gluten-friendly options also are available. “This is great news and just what Riverview needs,” said Riverview resident Stewart Cooper. “I have been to several of their locations and the food is always top-of-the-line and there is a huge selection.” Located across from Tijuana Flats and next to the under-construction James A. Will You Be My Valentine? Loving Treats That Can Be Lethal

By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH

February is a time of year when loved ones express their affection for each other by giving and receiving chocolates and flowers. It is nice to remember our pets on this special day, as well. However, it is never in the best interest of our four-legged friends to give them easy access to chocolates or flowers. As many of you already know, if a pet eats chocolate, there can be serious health consequences. Some of the common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea and even seizures. If you suspect that your pet has ingested any amount of chocolate, you may want to call your veterinarian to alert him or her of the situation. Depending on the type of chocolate eaten, you may have a life-threatening situation or you may just have a mess to clean up with no implications. Your vet may ask you to bring your pet into the office immediately so he or she can empty your pet's stomach and give medications to help reverse the effects. Milk chocolate often only causes diarrhea and vomiting, but the ingestion of even a small amount of dark chocolate or baking chocolate can, in some cases, cause death. It is better to give your pet a treat that is made especially for dogs or cats, and keep your own goodies away from curious paws and mouths.

A beautiful bouquet of Valentine's Day flowers also can have serious health consequences for our pets. Curious cats and dogs often can't resist chewing and eating the leaves and petals of a florist's creations, which can cause digestive problems, heart problems, kidney failure, liver disease and/or seizures. That's why it is so important to display your flowers out of your pets' reach. Certain flowers can be toxic if eaten. If you suspect or can confirm that your pet has eaten plant leaves or flower petals, the identity of the plant or flower is crucial in determining its toxicity. You can either call the ASPCA'S National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435, or contact your local veterinarian. Common flowers and plants-including some often found in your own backyard-that are especially toxic and can be fatal if ingested include: Oleander, Lilies, Sago Palm nuts and seeds, Castor Bean, Azalea, Rhododendron, Chrysanthemum, Peace Lily, Tulip bulbs, Amaryllis, English Ivy and Autumn Crocus. Everyone loves to receive chocolates, flowers or plants on Valentine's Day. By making sure they are kept away from nosy canines or hungry felines, you can enjoy them safely with no fears of accidentally poisoning your pets. And remember to make the day special for pets by giving lots of love, extra attention and a few safe pet treats.

Good Samaritan Mission Goes Mobile—Plus, A New Location For Its Annual Salsa Festival

Established in 1984, the Good Samaritan Mission (GSM) is closing its doors in Wimauma and going mobile. Through the transition, the ministry will continue to serve its original purpose—to improve the quality of life for those in the community through the knowledge of the Gospel and life skill classes. As GSM streamlines its ministry, it will relocate its administrative offices to Sun City. Reverend Cruz believes God is behind the organization’s transformation. “We are seeing more and more centers and businesses opening their doors for us to come in and teach at their facilities, fully aware that we are a Christian organization,” said Reverend Cruz. “We've seen, first-hand, an overall hunger for the message of the Gospel. We are

excited to be part of spreading His Word throughout the community." Amid its transition, the sixth annual Family Salsa Festival will still go on, but it will be held at South Bay Church in Riverview. So, if you like salsa and wish to support GSM, mark your calendar for Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. All proceeds will go toward programming and operational expenses. The Family Salsa Festival is a free event and a celebration of community and all things salsa. The festival will feature food trucks, live entertainment, a kids zone with games and activities, salsa dancing, craft vendors, and of course, the sampling of salsa. If you would like to participate as a vendor, salsa dip maker or provide entertainment, please contact Kacey Folger, the community engagement coordinator at 240-4107. South Bay Church is located at 13498 US Hwy 301 S. in Riverview. For more information about the festival, visit familysalsafestival.com. To learn more about GSMobile, visit www.gsmission.org. GSM is always looking for volunteers, especially instructors for the adult education program. To volunteer or donate, call 634-7136.

Safe Families For Children™ Provides Christian-Based Foster Care Alternatives

THE 26th ANNUAL

By Amanda Boston

MARCH 10-11, 2018 • Juried Fine Arts & Crafts Show • FREE! Kid’s Firehouse Art Station • 12 Local Food Vendors • Beer/Wine • Commercial & Non-Profit Vendors

Christian families host children from at-risk families so that parents can get the help they need and get back on their feet.

Where do children go during a family crisis when the issue does not warrant foster care? For at-risk families facing challenges like sudden unemployment, loss of housing or an acute illness, the Safe Families for Children™ program exists to fill the gap. Through the program, children do not become part of the state foster care system. Instead, the nonprofit ministry places children ages newborn through17 years old into loving Christian homes while parents work through their crisis. Every effort is made to keep siblings together. While enrolled in the Safe Families program, children live with host families for an average of 45 days as parents seek the help they need through different agencies. Safe Families for Children™ falls under the umbrella of Bethany Christian Services™, a faith-based national child welfare organization. Kevin Trotter, Florida’s Director of Bethany Christian Services, launched the Safe Families for Children program in the Tampa Bay area in 2013. Christina McGee, who supervises Florida’s Safe Families for Children™ said, “We currently have 30 host families in the Tampa area but would love to double that so we can reach more

families.” McGee explained that host families have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on a child's life by sharing the Gospel of Christ to every child they host. Furthermore, the at-risk parents have frequent communication with the host families, which often blossom into harmonious relationships between the host family and parents. McGee continued, “All our host families are volunteers and Christian. We require an extensive background check, references from a pastor, two personal references, interviews and home screenings.” The program enables host families to specifically choose the children they prefer to host such as age, gender, etc. Moreover, support systems are in place to encourage the host families. If you are interested in becoming a host family, visit https://safe-families.org/. Also, if know of a family who could benefit from Safe Families for Children™, the intake line is 4448543. Bethany Christian Services also provides family counseling, pregnancy support, adoption services and postadoption support. Homeschool Day At Cracker Country

At Homeschool Day at Cracker Country, students will learn about the lives of settlers in rural Florida before the turn of the 20th century through hands-on activities that would have been familiar to a child growing up in a Florida farming community over 100 years ago. Educators in historic dress will be on hand to welcome guests to the 1885

Carlton House, railroad depot, general store, church and more authentic structures. Along the way, young learners will make their own toys, dolls and helpful items for the household. They will also learn to operate an early 20th century printing press and make their own postcard. Homeschool Day will take place on Tuesday, March 13 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Activities are designed to capture the interests of students of all ages. Groups can tour at own pace and choose level of participation. The cost is $8 per person from ages 4-adult. Children 3 and under are free. Custom Cleanups understands that it is important to build long-term relationships with their clients and makes sure each client gets the personal experience. “I am a cancer survivor myself so I know how big of a gift it is to receive help during treatment,” stated owner Jacqueline Costello. “As a way to give back these women in need, there is no better way I know than to provide patients and families with the gift of a clean and comfortable home. These patients need to focus on their health and family not on cleaning their homes.” Custom Cleanups has agreed to help women battling cancer by cleaning two homes per month for four consecutive months at no charge. The only require-

ment is that the homes be within the company’s existing service area of Lithia. For more information about this company, visit www.customcleanups.com. In partnership with maid services throughout the United States and Canada, Cleaning For A Reason is celebrating 10 years of dedicated service to women battling cancer by Making A Difference One Home At A Time™. Together, these two forces offer free house cleaning to meet the needs of women, and since 2006, have donated more than $6 million in free services, helping more than 22,600 women with cancer. Based in Lewisville, TX, Cleaning For A Reason works with more than 1,200 professional cleaning companies and continues to grow and gain support. If you do plan on keeping some fish to eat, I recommend only keeping the larger fish (15”+). Due to the large ribcage (drum) the yield on a smaller fish is not what you might expect. In addition to the sheeps, we have also been getting some tripletail when the weather permits. This time of year is stone crab season which means the bay is loaded with strings of traps (buoys) throughout the bay and beaches. When the winds are down and the sun is out, you can find these fish feeding and warming up near the surface around the buoys. It is pretty much 100% sight fishing. When you find a buoy with a tripletail, present the bait up current and let it drift back towards the fish. They will most always be looking into the flow for any potential food floating by. For artificial, the D.O.A. shrimp is one of my favorites. I like to upsize my leader to 30lb if this fish aren’t too finicky due to their razor sharp gill plates and in case they get around the buoy/line. There’s no particular size on the hook. Impetigo-A Common Skin Infection Among Children, What To Watch For By Dr. Robert Norman A highly contagious bacterial infection, impetigo often starts when a small cut or scratch becomes infected. Although this type of bacterial infection can affect adults, it is much more common in children. “The symptoms of impetigo are honey-colored, crusty sores that often appear on the face between the upper lip and nose,” explains Robert Norman, D.O., an osteopathic dermatologist in Tampa and Riverview. “The rashes consist of red spots or blisters that rupture, discharge, and become encrusted.” He warns people not to scratch the sores because they may inadvertently spread the infection to other parts of their bodies. This skin infection is caused by one of two bacteria, group A streptococcus, which is the bacteria also responsible for strep throat or staphylococcus. If impetigo is caused by streptococcus it will begin with tiny blisters. These blisters will eventually erupt, revealing small, wet patches of red skin. Gradually, a tan or yellowish-brown crust will cover the affected area giving the appearance that it is coated with honey. If caused by staphylococcus, people will notice larger blisters that appear to contain a clear fluid. These blisters stay intact for a longer period of time compared to the smaller ones.

“Impetigo usually affects pre-school and school-aged children, especially during the summer,” said Dr.Norman. “This type of infection has a special preference for skin that has been affected by other skin problems, such as eczema, poison ivy, or a skin allergy to soap.” Impetigo is highly contagious.

Children can spread this skin infection from one area of the body to another by touching the infected area and then touching other parts of their bodies. The infection can also spread to other household members through clothing, towels, and bed linens that have been in contact with the infected person. Classmates and playmates also hold themselves at

high risk of infection by coming in contact with the infected person or anything that he or she has touched. The most important way parents can prevent impetigo is by keeping their child’s skin clean. “This includes giving your child daily baths or showers with

anti-bacterial soap and warm water,” explains Dr. Norman. “Remember to pay special attention to areas of the skin that has cuts or scrapes, as well as rashes on the skin.” If the infected areas are relatively small, health care professionals suggest trying simple home remedies. “It is good to try to remove the crusts by soaking

the infected area in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes, and then scrub the area gently with a washcloth and antibacterial soap,” he recommends. Another common remedy used is applying antibiotic ointments. However, the biggest issue to focus on is preventing impetigo from spreading. For instance, when your child has a runny nose, keep the area between the upper lip and nose clean. Physicians recommend spreading a thin layer of anti-bacterial ointment under the nose as well as applying it in the nostrils with a Q-tip. The nose is most often the source of impetigo germs. These precautions can help eradicate the bug that causes the infection. “If impetigo is not improved after three to four days, or any new infected areas appear, a physician should be called immediately,” advises Dr. Norman. If left unattended this infection can cause serious problems, such as pain; swelling; tenderness of the infected areas; discharge of pus; or a fever of 100 degrees or higher. Even though impetigo is not life threatening, it could lead to life-threatening situations. People need to understand that this infection is very manageable. With the proper medical attention, it can be easily treated. For skin problems, contact Dr. Rob Norman today at 813-880-7546.

By Nick Nahas

Janee Davis, a sophomore track and field standout at Lennard High School, has been invited to compete in the Down Under Sports Tournament in Queensland, Australia this summer as a representative for not only her community and the state of Florida, but the United States as well. On July 8, Davis will depart for a 10-day journey to the land down under to compete for individual honors and a team championship title. This will be her first time visiting another country. Davis needs to raise $5,000 to fund this once in a lifetime venture. “I am very excited and blessed that I was chosen to compete in the tournament,” Davis said. “I am looking forward to meeting new people and being able to compete for my country.” Davis started track when she was in 6th grade. This year, the Down Under Sports Program will include competition in football, cross country, golf, track and field, basketball and volleyball. Davis is looking forward to the competition. She will compete in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the long jump. “This is an experience of a lifetime to have been selected among all of the kids in Hillsborough County,” said Renee King, Davis’ mother. “She was one of two students that were picked. This is a huge honor and opportunity for her to experience track and field at another level.” Davis eventually wants to go to college and continue her track career and compete in the Olympics as well. She wants to become a veterinarian when her track career is over. If you would like to help Davis raise money for her trip, you can donate online at DownUnderSports.com/payment/85B E-DAC7-6FD8.

play record titled Rewind in 2017. He is also a worship leader for Free Life Chapel in Lakeland. “I am so grateful to be a part of this benefit concert for Puerto Rico,” said Rosado. “When I got the call from Bell Shoals, I didn’t think twice. You see I have so much family back on the island, and since the hurricane came through months ago, I've wanted to attach myself to something that would benefit [them]." Blind from birth, MacIntyre is a twotime kidney transplant recipient. After his appearance on American Idol, the world fell in love with MacIntyre’s Durant High School graduate and recording artist Jeremy Rosado will perform for the benefit concert aiding Puerto Rico.

Aptly titled Puerto Rico—We Haven’t Forgotten, Bell Shoals Baptist Church is hosting a concert to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. On September 20, Hurricane Maria made a direct hit on Puerto Rico at Category 5 strength. It is the Island’s worst natural disaster on record. Dr. Stephen Rummage, the senior pastor of Bell Shoals Baptist Church, said, “From the day the devastation of Hurricane Maria was known, we prayed to see how God would use us to help the precious people of Puerto Rico.” To support the worthy cause, mark your calendar for Saturday, February 17 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. The concert takes place at Bell Shoals’ Brandon Campus with tickets available at the door. Ticket cost is $7 per person. Discounted tickets are available for $5 per person if purchased in advance at www.bellshoals.com/concert. A love offering will be collected during the event, with all proceeds going to support hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. The show will feature performances from two American Idol finalists—Scott MacIntyre, from season eight and Jeremy Rosado, from season eleven. Rosado, a Durant High School graduate, released his first album Heartbeat in 2015 and an extended
