FISHHAWK CREEK ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY

Among those celebrating the 20th anniversary of FishHawk Creek Elementary School in Lithia are the seven teachers who have been at the school since its opening, an achievement that gives testament to the school’s stature.

So applauds Jim Hamilton, former deputy superintendent of schools, who oversaw the school construction boom that marked the final years of Earl Lennard’s term as superintendent of schools. According to Hamilton, from 1998 through Lennard’s retirement in 2005, the Hillsborough County School District constructed, renovated and/or added space to nearly 100 schools.

Among the more than 70 schools built from scratch to accommodate new growth and relieve overcrowded schools were Randall Middle, Newsome High and Bevis and Stowers elementary schools in Lithia.

As for the seven teachers at work at FishHawk Elementary for 20 years, “that’s really a testimony to the quality of the school and the community,” Hamilton said. “Teachers don’t stay for that length of time in places that are not great places to teach. When I see teachers who have been in the same place for 20 years, I know the principals at that school were great principals and that the parents at those schools were great school supporters.”

In a break from teaching her fourth grade class at FishHawk Creek, Melissa Patterson Frigo discussed her 20 years at the school and the long-serving principal who opened the school in 2004. Principal Pam Bush stayed until Steven Sims, the current principal, succeeded her in 2019.

“Pam was always very understanding about people who had children,” Frigo said.

“She was always there for us when we had problems in the classroom, offering suggestions to help us in our teaching. She knew everybody by first name.”

In a conference room at the school, Frigo referred to the plaque on the wall that marks the 2004 establishment of the school. It notes the school’s falcon mascot and its founding motto, “Soaring to excellence in academic achievement and character education.” It notes also the charter staf, including assistant principal Ginger Elea and the seven teachers who continue to work there today: Frigo, Amanda Johnson, Jason Judd, Megan McGreevy, Elizabeth Duckworth Sierra, Tina Trombley and Rebecca Vercher.

At the anniversary ceremony in April, Bush gave a “beautiful speech,” as did Barbara Franques, Bush’s area director, Frigo said, as the community joined together to remember a special school at a special time taking root in a burgeoning community.

“I’m blessed to have been here this many years,” Frigo said, noting that when she started there were four fourth grade classrooms. Now there are nine, and nine likewise for just about every grade level. She gave high marks to Sims, noting that while his style difers from Bush’s, he “makes it fun” and also is “very understanding and always checking in on us in our classrooms.”

“The FishHawk family, that’s how I refer to this school,” Frigo said. “I love my staf, I love my grade level and I love the community. Anything we need, the parents are very supportive.”

Tampa Bay Lightning radio play-by-play broadcaster Dave Mishkin had an idea for a novel in the early 2000s. After experiencing some writer’s block, Mishkin put the project away for several years. In 2022, he was inspired to finish what he started when faced with the possibility of a long ofseason without calling Lightning hockey games, with the team on the brink of elimination.

Mishkin fleshed out the story in his mind for five or six weeks before even writing. The Lightning ended up going to the Stanley Cup finals after facing elimination in the first round of the playofs against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Around the time the team started the playof series against the Avalanche, he had written a chapter outline with the core ideas of the book. The first chapter that he wrote was actually the final chapter of the novel.

“The inspiration came years and years ago, but once I realized that I had the story I knew that I had to see it through,” said Mishkin. “I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if, after all these years, the story came together in my mind and I didn’t actually see it through.”

Blind Squirrel is about a minor league hockey player who has mental health issues after losing his parents in a car accident at a young age. The story mostly takes place in Hershey, Pennsylvania, where Mishkin is from. The book’s protagonist, Noah Nicholson, after having a good career, starts his mental healing process after a career-ending injury to his eye. According to Mishkin, by the end of the book Noah is in a much better place than where he began, and he is able to live a much better life. He hopes that this part of the story will resonate with his audience.

read the book, they finish it and say, ‘I really enjoyed that, I’m glad I read the book,’ beyond any kind of message. I think that Noah’s story is one in which the message is that you are not defined by the circumstances in your life, and he finds a way to lead a much more fulfilling life.”

Mishkin has been the Tampa Bay Lightning radio play-by-play broadcaster since 2002. The Yale graduate spent the prior 11 years as a minor league hockey broadcaster before joining the three-time Stanley Cup-winning club.

“I love what I do,” said Mishkin. “I was very lucky at a young age to find something that I enjoyed and then find somebody to pay me to do that thing,” he joked. “I’ve gotten great pleasure from doing something that I love and feel grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to do it for all these years.”

The author will donate some of the proceeds of the book to Tampa Bay Thrives, a coalition of community leaders committed to improving mental health and substance use disorder issues in our region. According to its website, the goal of the organization is to strengthen behavioral health outcomes by mobilizing communities, improving early intervention and guiding access to professionals.

FRENCH AND ITALIAN EXCHANGE STUDENTS ENJOY FLORIDA LIFE ARRIVE ALIVE: INTERACTIVE SIMULATOR ALLOWS STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE UNSAFE DRIVING

In August of 2023, Monika Marku from Milan, Italy, and Lola Nonnon from Montpellier, France, traveled to Lithia through the International Student Exchange program to live with Joe and Melissa Canfield. The girls enrolled at Bloomingdale High and quickly began enjoying life in the Sunshine State.

The girls enjoyed Florida life to the fullest. A few local activities they enjoyed include: the Gasparilla Festival, Nativity Octoberfest, Ruskin Seafood Festival, Strawberry Festival, Busch Gardens and Lightning hockey games.

Seeing the sunset at the beach is Lola’s favorite Florida activity. Monika loved the Strawberry Festival.

“We think the best part of having the girls has been exploring local places and showing them what America is like dayto-day, we have had the opportunity to go to lots of diferent places like New York, Washington D.C., and New Smyrna Beach; however, the girls really have enjoyed being a “typical” American teenager the most and having dinner together and hanging out with friends!” Melissa Canfield said. Lola and Monika both say American high schools difer from theirs with more social activities like clubs, sports, and events.

Both took advantage and were in numerous activities including Junior Steering Club for Lolo and Monika joined AFJROTC.

“I really enjoyed being a part of steering at Bloomingdale. At the first pep rally ,we had to prepare a dance and perform in front of the school, and it is definitely something I will remember,” Lola said.

Monika added, “My experience in the U.S. completely changed for the better since I joined the ROTC program. I’ve got to know a lot of new, nice people, feel like part of a group, grow as an individual, learn a lot about American culture and history.”

Bloomingdale Air Force JROTC Instructor Lt Col Bob Marasco and Junior Steering Coordinator Mrs. Elise Cruz Aragon said both girls were significant to the programs.

“Monika’s can-do attitude is infectious and always positive and upbeat. She will be leaving a lasting impression on AFJROTC,” Marasco said.

Lola and Monika say they are grateful for the hospitality of the Canfields and the numerous trips they took them on. When asked about their favorite Florida food, both girls chose: Chick-fil-A.

According to the 2023 Florida Teen Driver Fact Sheet, the highest rates of fatalities involving a teen driver occur in October, March, November and May. These months align with major high school activities like prom and holiday breaks.

Newsome High School emphasized to students the importance of driver safety by bringing the Arrive Alive Tour to school on April 8 and 9.

The Arrive Alive Tour is a national program that educates drivers on the dangers and consequences of impaired and distracted driving with the aim to create lifelong safe driving habits.

Newsome students who opted to participate in the program used a state-of-theart simulator to experience the real-life dangers without the real-life consequences.

Students chose between three options: alcohol, marijuana or distraction. With a virtual reality headset on, students got into an immobilized vehicle. The vehicle was on rotating pads, which allowed students to turn the steering wheel and employ realistic operation of the vehicle. Sensors connected to the vehicle’s gas, brake pedals and steering wheel enabled a drugged or distracted driving experience. Upon exiting the vehicle, students were handed a mock citation detailing the ramifications of their

simulation, as explained by a facilitator.

Newsome Principal Katie Rocha was grateful for the community’s support to bring the event to the school.

“The Arrive Alive event was an outstanding success, providing Newsome High School students with crucial awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. The Honorary Mayor’s Race of East Hillsborough County, hosted by the Valrico/Fishhawk Chamber of Commerce, begins on Sunday, September 1, but local residents who are interested in running for ofce must have their applications into the chamber by Saturday, June 1.

The Honorary Mayor’s Race recognizes caring citizens in the East Hillsborough community. Candidates utilize their time, talent and fundraising capabilities to raise money benefiting East Hillsborough-area 501(c) (3) charities. The honorary mayor of East Hillsborough represents the Valrico/Fishhawk Chamber of Commerce at East Hillsborough community area functions.

Danielle Stevens, owner of Vine Vegan in Brandon, is the current honorary mayor of East Hillsborough County. She is also the chairperson of the Valrico/Fishhawk Chamber of Commerce and is responsible for overseeing the new candidates in this race.

“I wanted to run for honorary mayor because I wanted to give back to the amazing local charities in our community and to gain exposer to my new business, Vine Vegan, in the community,” Stevens said.

NEWSOME SOPHOMORE EXCELS AT COUNTY AND STATE SCIENCE FAIRS WITH ‘SAVE OUR OCEANS’ PROJECT

On February 7, Hillsborough County held its annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Earth and Environmental Fair. Local high schools sent nominees to present science projects for the competition. A Newsome High School sophomore, Kush Gulati, received first place in the senior division. His science project centered around his love for the earth and protecting the oceans.

Kush’s science project was entitled ‘Save Our Oceans: Studying the capability of naturally occurring substances to neutralize pollutants in ocean water.’ He completed his science project on the capabilities of natural substances (such as peppermint oil, potato roots, orange peel) to neutralize oil, fertilizer and microplastic pollutants in ocean water.

Gulati stated, “Ocean pollution caused by fertilizer runof, microplastics and oil spills pose a real and present danger to ocean ecosystems and marine life. We currently either do not have a solution or have largely chemical-based solutions to fight these pollutants. This project attempts to study the potential of utilizing abundantly available and naturally occurring substances as a solution to the problem.”

his passion for protecting the planet and its oceans. He volunteers his free time at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota and Summerland Key as a research assistant analyzing coral reef sites. He also volunteers as the marketing chair at the Youth Advisory Council with Reef Renewal USA to help protect the coral reefs.

Speaking of his interest in protecting coral reefs, Gulati also said, “I worked to be certified as an advanced scuba diver as soon as I was eligible. I have always enjoyed scuba diving as a hobby. Although, while diving I observed many coral reefs which had become degenerated over recent years. When I researched more, I realized the extent of harm being caused by ocean acidification and warming waters on corals. I have felt a sense of urgency to act and started to volunteer in every way possible to help. My ambition is to incrementally do more for this cause.”

Gulati qualified to compete at the state level, representing Hillsborough County’s senior section for the State Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) of Florida held from April 2-4 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. He was awarded NOAA’s Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award and the West Panhandle Regional Science & Engineering Fair Award. He was also a finalist for Outstanding STEM Research.

DR. RAJAN ‘RAJ’ WADHAWAN JOINS ADVENTHEALTH WEST FLORIDA AS CHIEF CLINICAL OFFICER

Dr. Rajan ‘Raj’ Wadhawan has joined AdventHealth’s West Florida Division as chief clinical ofcer, efective April 21. He will oversee the clinical operations and quality of care for the region’s 13 hospitals. Dr. Wadhawan will report to David Ottati, president and CEO of the West Florida Division.

Dr. Wadhawan, who is board-certified in pediatrics and neonatal perinatal medicine, served as the senior executive ofcer for AdventHealth for Children and AdventHealth for Women and was responsible for a care network that includes more than 375 physicians and specialists practicing over 35 subspecialties, community specialty clinics, pediatric rehabilitation, pediatric emergency rooms and Centra Care Kids urgent care. The network delivers more than 17,000 babies annually.

He holds this appointment through September 2025.

Dr. Wadhawan attended medical school and residency at Government Medical College in Amritsar, India. He completed his fellowship at Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He also earned a master’s in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University and is board-certified in medical management by the Certifying Commission for Medical Management as a certified physician executive (CPE). USF OPENS CUTTING-EDGE DOD LAB AIMED AT PROVIDING MILITARY SOLUTIONS

The University of South Florida (USF) recently opened a cutting-edge lab aimed at providing quick, innovative solutions to the diferent challenges facing the U.S. Department of Defense. Managed by USF’s Institute of Applied Engineering (IAE), the new Rapid Experimentation Lab (REL) provides a unique, collaborative space to rapidly test concepts.

Te University of South Florida recently had a ribbon-cutting for a state-of-the-art facility that is part of a fve-year, $85 million contract with the Department of Defense.

As one of nation’s most research-intensive universities, USF is helping to solve problems throughout society, and the facility is a key part of those eforts.

“Our new lab will further enhance the University of South Florida’s focus on developing technologies and providing innovative solutions that address critical global and national security challenges,” USF President Rhea Law said. “This facility will provide research opportunities for our faculty, handson learning experiences for our students and help grow important partnerships with governmental agencies and private industry.”

The state-of-the-art facility, part of a five-year, $85 million contract with the Department of Defense, is poised to reshape the engineering landscape in Tampa Bay. It aims to streamline the prototyping process by bringing together engineers from a wide range of disciplines under one roof, significantly reducing development timelines.

and tomorrow,” said Peter Jorgensen, associate director of engineering for the IAE. “More than just a makerspace, the REL is a playground for mechanical, electronics, sensors, communications and software teams to quickly iterate on designs to solve problems, invent new products and rapidly deliver cutting-edge capabilities.”

The new 8,000-square-foot facility will be utilized not just by USF faculty and student engineers but also partners in the Department of Defense and private industry, who are working to support missions everywhere, including the battlefield, the oceans and space.

The lab houses various equipment, including electrical and mechanical computer design and analysis tools, communications networks to support testing, electronics and circuit boards as well as manufacturing technology. It will allow multiple engineers to collaborate, test and retest an idea or product before presenting it to the Department of Defense for consideration.

The IAE also plans to work with the USF Technology Transfer Ofce to identify startup companies interested in utilizing the lab for development of their own inventions.

Serving seven years in the army and 18 years with the Hillsborough County Sherif ’s Ofce (HCSO), Robert ‘Bobby’ L. Howard was no stranger to protecting the lives of others.

On June 23, 2023, Howard lost his life in a motorcycle accident on his way to a Defender law enforcement motorcycle club event. As the family and the community grappled with the loss of the beloved Ruskin resident, Kacey Folger, Howard’s fiancee, became determined to preserve his memory.

“We knew we had to keep his legacy alive,” said Folger. “We were witnessing the community grieve and mourn just as we were. Bobby touched so many lives, and we didn’t want that to stop just because he was no longer physically with us.”

In November 2023, only three months after submitting a formal application, Folger was notified that the proposed Robert L. Howard Foundation had been successfully registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Folger formally announced the foundation to the community and began accepting donations on Thanksgiving.

The organization’s first ofcial donation was gifted by Sutherland Lodge No. 174. Hosting its annual award dinner on November 21, 2023, the Masons invited Folger to attend as Howard was honored as one of the organization’s community heroes. Upon giving a speech discussing Howard and the

foundation’s mission, a hat was passed around to collect donations. By the end of the evening, members of the Sutherland Lodge No. 174 gave an additional $1,000 to the foundation.

In December 2023, the Rivercrest community, located at 11560 Ramble Creek Dr. in Riverview, partnered with Events by KC LLC, Folger’s company, to host its S’mores & Stores event. The event is centered around both Santa and the Grinch giving s’mores away while attendees enjoy live music, food trucks and access to more than 40 vendors. Folger has helped plan this event for the past three years, traditionally awarding the proceeds to a nonprofit in the area. This past year, however, the nearly $1,000 raised was awarded to the foundation. This year’s S’mores & Stores event will also donate all proceeds to the Robert L. Howard Foundation.

Using these generous donations and others from previous events, the foundation is currently looking to ofer four $500 scholarships to students at East Bay High School, Howard’s alma mater. Applications are due by Friday, June 7 to robertlhowardfoundation.org. .

NXTGEN FUTBOL OPENS NEW LOCAL INDOOR FACILITY

NxTGeN Futbol, in collaboration with Country Day Montessori Schools, kicked of a new indoor futsal facility at 1202 Bloomingdale Ave. over spring break.

Futsal is a soccer-based game played indoors on a hard court, similar to a basketball court, and is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. NxTGeN Futbol uses turf and padded walls to avoid injuries to players.

According to its website, NxTGeN Futbol provides soccer players with personalized training and fitness programs to enhance skills on the field. Its goal is to help players reach their full potential and improve their overall performance.

Rotary International is known for its commitment to community service, building leadership skills and establishing strong connections among members. One of the primary goals of Rotary International is to foster a sense of belonging and leadership in future generations. This is demonstrated through a multitude of involvement opportunities for young adults.

First-year delegates to Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders, wearing yellow shirts, watch intently as their team leaders in red shirts prepare for the next activity.

One such opportunity is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), a national program dedicated to providing the youth with leadership experience and problem-solving skills. The local division of this program is the Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders (S4TL), a weeklong overnight encampment for rising high school seniors aimed at helping students become trailblazers within their communities. The conference is hosted at Florida Southern College in Lakeland and allows students to listen to world-renowned motivational speakers, participate in lively exchanges with peers and divide into rap sessions. Rap sessions are student-led discussions that focus on gaining insight from active Rotary members, known as Rotarians, about developing leadership skills.

“It was rewarding because I had some insight into what the kids were thinking,” said Jerry Harburg, member of FishHawk-Riverview Rotary.

This year’s Fourth of July celebration will be Brandon’s largest ever, as two groups are joining together to present two fun, fantastic events for the enjoyment of the entire Greater Brandon community. The day will kick of with the annual Fourth of July parade, this year presented by the new Greater Brandon Action Network (GBAN). GBAN stepped in earlier this year to replace the Community Roundtable as the presenting group upon the previous group’s dissolution. The parade will run from 10 a.m.-12 Noon, with the final route through Brandon to be announced in June.

According to GBAN President Lisa Rodriquez, “Four trustees with the Roundtable just couldn’t let this 60-plus-year Brandon tradition be eliminated, so we formed a new organization with the goal to continue the events that have meant so much to Brandon over the years.”

Serving with Rodriquez are Vice President Betty Jo Tompkins, treasurer and parade Co-chair Randall Munsters, and secretary and parade Co-chair Lela Lilyquist. FREE CLASSROOM SUPPORT FOR PREKINDERGARTEN CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY

Parents who have little children with developmental delays or disabilities often struggle to find help, either through therapy or educational support. There is county assistance available for 3-to-5-year-old children through an organization called Child Find which partners with Hillsborough County’s Pre-Kindergarten Exceptional Education Preschool Services (PEEPS). Through PEEPS, these children are given specialized instruction and/or therapy within the public school system, free of charge. Approximately 2,800 3-to-5-year-old children are currently enrolled in this program.

Hillsborough County PEEPS website states, “For many children, part-time, specially designed instruction is provided at the child’s community preschool in locations throughout the county. Additionally, developmentally appropriate classrooms designed to meet the needs of young children are located in 93 elementary schools and three exceptional centers. Teaching staf include a certified teacher and a paraprofessional (teacher assistant). The educational environment ofers many opportunities for active learning experiences in key developmental areas which include language, fine and gross motor, socialization, self-help, and readiness skills. Intervention for individual special needs is interwoven into the curriculum as appropriate for each child.”

To determine eligibility for the PEEPS program, a child can either transition from the Early Steps program or a caregiver can fill out a referral to Child Find. After a referral has been made, the Early Childhood Council contacts parents/caregivers, schedules a series of evaluations/screenings and reviews current therapies for that child. After going through the assessments, if the child is determined to need additional help, he or she is referred to Exceptional Student Education Services through the Hillsborough County Public Schools system, then the parents register that child for those services. Children who are found to be eligible can receive specific therapies in the public school setting. Although if it is determined that the child does not qualify for services, parents are given referrals to other agencies that may be able to help.

Newsome High School Junior Reserve O f cers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Cadet

Major Benjamin Phelps was named one of the top cadets in Hillsborough County in a recent ranking by the county.

Phelps, ranked seventh in the county, has been with the program since his freshman year.

“It has been a true pleasure watching him grow as a leader over that time,” Newsome’s Lt. Col. Eric Deal said. “[Phelps] is an extraordinary scholar, athlete and leader.”

Phelps will attend the University of South Florida in the fall after earning a four-year National Army ROTC scholarship, which he will use to major in finance at the university.

He will graduate from high school with a 4.0 GPA and as a member of multiple campus honor societies. He has held several leadership positions within Newsome’s JROTC program, including his most recent position as battalion operations o f cer. Through this position, Phelps was responsible for leading the school’s first-ever drill competition in February.

He is also the program’s rifle team captain and has competed in several JROTC competitions, including the Civilian Marksmanship Program Regional Cham-

pionship. While he is not participating in Newsome’s JROTC program, Phelps is a frequent volunteer at Seeds of Hope, a nonprofit organization that provides food to the community.

“The All-service Cadet of the Year board was a completely new experience to me that really challenged and pushed me to become my best self,” Phelps said. “I am proud of my accomplishments and know that I put in my max e f ort to represent me as well as Newsome.”

Each year, Hillsborough County’s 28 programs send their top cadets to service-specific boards to represent the school.

“It is always an honor to recognize our JROTC programs here in Hillsborough County,” Superintendent Van Ayres said.

“The competition was tough, and they should be very proud to be named one of the top cadets.”

Having a cadet make the top 10 is a common feat for Newsome’s program.

Over the past seven years, six cadets have finished in the top 10, including five Cadet of the Year winners.

Newsome High School hosted its annual Future Farmers of America (FFA) Sweetheart Pageant at the end of March as a fundraiser event.

Seven contestants competed in the pageant on March 29 in the school’s auditorium and were judged based on the pageant and FFA experience. Three people, Deanna Garner, Emily Groat and Lindsey English, judged the contestants.

At the end of the night, senior Gabija Davila was crowned the Sweetheart.

“She is a senior with seven years of experience in FFA,” advisor Melissa Sampson said. “She exhibits beef cattle, pigs, sheep and participates in many of our FFA CDEs, such as … citrus evaluation and livestock judging.”

Around 150 people were in attendance, according to Sampson. Over 100 tickets were presold for the event. Presold tickets were $5, or $10 if bought at the door. Sponsorships were also available for companies looking to support the organization.

In addition to the pageant, Newsome’s FFA program gave away rafe items and had refreshments and a bouquet stand.

“The event was a fundraiser for the Newsome FFA alumni,” Sampson said. “The alumni support our FFA chapter much like a booster club. They help finan-

The pageant is one of several fundraisers the Newsome FFA hosts. This semester, the organization has hosted a Spirit Night at Sunflower Cafe and a music bingo night with Bullfrog Creek Brewing Co.

The Newsome FFA also participates in several competitions throughout the school year to showcase its members’ skills, including livestock raising.

FFA provides an opportunity for students to gain agricultural and leadership experience through local chapters, events and opportunities. The national organization strives to help the next generation of farmers develop their skills and talents.

The Willis Peters Exceptional Center participated in the fifth annual polar plunge to raise money for Florida’s

chapters.

On March 24, 15 participants, including students, staf and family, took the plunge at the Mirada Lagoon in San Antonio to raise over $3,000 for the Special Olympics teams at the center.

“We just participated to help raise money for Special Olympics, which our students are involved with throughout the year,” teacher Mickie Fritzke said.

The money raised will support Special Olympics teams, including powerlifting, track and field, cheerleading, bocce, bowling, cornhole and basketball.

“It was an event that we figured would be fun for the staf, student and family member, and I was asked to help put a team together,” Fritzke said.

The team raised money though social media and asking for support from family and friends.

The Special Olympics’ polar plunge fundraiser takes place across the state. In Tampa, over 500 participants raised more than $80,000.

The Willis Peters Exceptional Center ofers educational programs for students with disabilities from 3 to 22 years old. Students are placed in the center based on individual needs. The center ofers programs “for students with visual impairments, dual sensory impairments, physical handicaps, emotional/behavioral disabilities and moderate to significant intellectual disabilities,” according to the center’s website.

The special needs public school center, formerly known as the Dover Exceptional Center, was renamed to honor its former principal, Willis Peters, during renovations in 2000.

In September of 2016, Brandon resident Rick Ploor was diagnosed with stage-four melanoma. He became a patient at the Moftt Cancer Center McKinley Campus and went through various treatments, such as immunotherapy, clinical trials, five surgeries and radiation treatment. Debbie Ploor, Rick’s wife of 45 years, credits Moftt with the quality of life Rick was able to have, living for an additional six and half years past diagnosis. Sadly, Rick passed away on May 23, 2023. After Rick’s passing, Debbie formed the Rick Ploor Memorial nonprofit to raise money for Moftt’s Oncology Department to help further research, trials and melanoma awareness.

As part of this efort to raise money for Moftt Cancer Center’s Oncology research, on April 8 the nonprofit Rick Ploor Memorial hosted its inaugural Rick Ploor Memorial Golf Tournament at River Hills Country Club in Valrico. The tournament began at 7 a.m. and concluded around 1:30 p.m. Since the total solar eclipse also occurred on April 8, the tournament included eclipse glasses in its gift bags so participants could enjoy the eclipse outside as well.

Debbie stated of this fundraiser and her husband, “For Rick to survive as long as he did is a testament to Moftt and to his courage and will to live. I held this memorial golf event to benefit Moftt Cancer Center’s Melanoma Research. The money raised will go specifically to melanoma research projects his doctor (Dr. Nikhil Khushalani) oversees and an awareness program for early detection run by Rick’s ARPN (Gina Corsanico) who cared for him for over six years. … There is currently no cure for melanoma that has metastasized.”

Over 1,000 community members from all corners of Hillsborough County arrived early in Tampa on April 6 to participate in the Race for Education.

The third annual Race for Education, co-hosted by Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) and Hillsborough Education Foundation (HEF), started in front of Blake High School and took participants in 5K and 1-mile races over the Hillsborough River.

Race proceeds are used by HEF to fund engaging ways to improve the mental and physical wellness of students in the district.

The inception of the district’s current health focus began in 2016 with the Hillsborough Healthy Schools Committee.

School board member Lynn Gray and Superintendent Van Ayers were on the committee. Both ran this year’s race and placed in their age groups.

“I began the Race for Education three years ago as a pinnacle event to have our children and staf to have a chance to savor the joy of movement,” Gray said.

Ayers is thrilled with this year’s race.

“Three years ago, I helped put the course together, and now seeing it grow to more than a thousand athletes makes me so proud. My favorite part is seeing the schools and families come out to support the runners. When we announce the winners and they shout out what school

they attend or teach at, those moments make this whole race worthwhile,” Ayers said.

The overall winner of the 5K was Tristan Cravello, winning with a time of 16:52. The overall female win ner was Holly Bly with a time of 21:15. Cravello is a teacher at Tinker K-8 School at MacDill Air Force Base. Bly is a former teacher in the county.

Cravello also won the race in 2023.

“The Race for Education is a fun race where teachers, like me, get to participate to have fun outside of the classroom and school. I’ve run this race for two years not only to compete and win but also to motivate other teachers in the district to exercise for their well-being,” Cravello said.

Highlights of the race included Tiana Cole (eleventh grader from Blake High School) singing the national anthem and Santiago Carrera (fourth grader from Bevis Elementary School) presenting the flag and performances by Plant High School Drumline, Ballast Point Elementary Bucket Drumming, Lanier Elementary World Drumming, Coleman Middle School Jazz Band, Thonotosassa Elementary World Drumming and Lockhart Elementary Drumline.

BURROWING OWLS: SAFE HOMES FOR THE FAMILY

Did you know that Florida is home to a unique species of owl that nests in burrows on the ground? It’s true. The burrowing owl, one of the smallest species of owls in Florida, makes its home on the ground in grasslands and treeless areas. One of the five species of owls that live here year-round, burrowing owls can be found in specific areas and habitats within the state. Biological studies continue to map where these birds reside, as they have been forced to become resilient and adaptable due to their historical habitat range shrinking from development.

On March 28, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Brandon accompanied media specialist Mia Small and the six students selected to represent Kingswood Elementary School at the Hillsborough County Student Literacy and Media (SLAM) Showcase.

Students from all over Hillsborough County gathered at the Tampa Convention Center to display their book-inspired projects. The SLAM program encourages students from grades K-12 to select a book from the Sunshine State Youth Reading Award (SSYRA) program and then use various mediums, including writing, digital media, film, photography and 2-D graphic design to retell their selected book’s story.

Several authors of the SSYRA books were on hand to read sections from their books as well as provide photo ops and book signings for the students.

Grace Notes Waiting Time Isn’t Wasted Time

I’ve been studying the Old Testament (love all those amazing stories!) and noticed something in 2 Samuel chapter 5 that caught my eye.

“David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years,” (2 Samuel 5:4).

In preceding chapters, we learned that David was only a boy — many Bible scholars believe him to have been around 15 years old when he defeated Goliath — when he was first brought into the palace by King Saul to serve as his armor-bearer and private harpist (1 Samuel 16:21-23).

But Saul, out of jealousy, soon rejected David and decided to kill him (1 Samuel 19:1). The spirit of God left Saul and entered David.

The prophet Samuel disclosed to David that God has anointed him to be the next king, but they kept it their little secret. Saul had his suspicions though because he chased David all over the countryside for an undisclosed number of years, beginning in 1 Samuel chapter 21 until Saul’s death at the end of chapter 31.

Then followed a seven-year civil war be-

tween the house of Saul and the house of David before Samuel ofcially crowned David king of Israel (2 Samuel 5:3). So, there was a 15year gap between the time David knew he would be king and when he actually became king. He knew at 15 years of age but had to wait until he was 30 to begin serving the Lord in what was his preordained destiny.

Yikes! Who wants to wait that long for anything?

Not me. Not you. And probably not David either.

But evidently waiting is included in Papa God’s plan for us. Waiting time isn’t wasted time. David used those 15 years to hone his skills as a warrior and leader, building the respect and loyalty of his countrymen. His kingdom was more powerful and cohesive because of those 15 well-spent years.

So, I think the takeaway is that we should expect waiting in our life journeys. Maybe LOTS of waiting. And in the meantime, we shouldn’t lose patience … or hope. Because in God’s economy, waiting time isn’t wasted time

CHURCH: A FIXED POINT OF LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light,” (John 1:5).

One recent evening during a break in the rain, my golden retriever, Max, and I took our late evening walk. The town was unusually quiet, so we took a nice long stroll. We always enjoy that sense of pause and stillness.

We circled the old town common, still fronted by restored colonial era homes, then made our way back through Main Street and along Saint James Street. We glanced over and noticed how steadfast and — well — consequential our church looked. It is just so solid and so present. The congregation has been a fi xture at the corner of Saint James and Saint Patrick streets for 150 years now, 115 of those in this lovely building.

Church in this town, and in our lives too, is a fi xed point of reference. Or, as my friend, Rusty Holderness, said: “This space is probably the most consistent space in my life.” There is a sense of constancy here. The Presbyterian church is an unshakable presence in this town — not so much as a building as it is an active community of people, a spiritual gravitas and a testimony to goodness.

I could not help but notice, walking by in the late evening, how even in the dark the church building stands as a witness to the light — maybe especially in the dark. So, I took a couple of photographs and the truth of it, not only via the light but also in the comforting fact of the bricks and mortar, spoke eloquently.

The truth about the power of the gospel is communicated best, of course, via the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control that are evidence of the Spirit at work in us.

But I have to say that this church building, standing right in the middle of downtown on a wet Friday night, does a pretty good job.

Brittany Rollings, a resident of Apollo Beach, is an artist who expresses her artistic creativity through illustrations. The accomplished book illustrator now also creates custom-designed, oneof-a-kind hand-drawn illustrations. This includes black-andwhite sketches for individuals, couples, families, business logos and favorite pets. Most illustrations are created from photographs of the subject.

After many years as an illustrator of children’s books, Brittany Rollings of Apollo Beach has expanded her art business to offer custom-made, one-ofa-kind hand-drawn illustrations for people who want to capture a special moment through illustrations.

Rollings said, “The idea for custom-designed illustrations came about as I saw a need to create pictures capturing precious memories for people to cherish for the rest of their lives.”

Rollings said, “Together, my mom and I would later go on to illustrate a children’s book called You Are One of a Kind We then collaborated on a children’s book series called Molly Tailwagger , which was a 10-book series focused on educating children about God and His love while also teaching valuable lessons, such as honesty and the importance of friendship. After the completion of Molly Tailwagger series, I continued to illustrate for other clients. I have been active as a contract illustrator for Xulon Press, a publishing company in Maitland, since 2012.”

Rollings said, “People might say that art is just a hobby, and you need to get a real job. I spent years in real jobs and never felt the joy or sense of purpose that I do when I am drawing for others’ pleasure.”

The ECC, located at 2101 E. Palm Ave. in Tampa, is managed by Lynn Kroesen, who has managed the center since its beginning. Prior to that, Kroesen was a business consultant with Hillsborough County’s Small Business Information Center.

Entrepreneur Collaborative Center (ECC). in Ybor City, is a satellite home for over 90 nonproft organizatiose.

Hillsborough County’s small businesses are the backbone of the community. They employ about half of the working residents in the county.

Kroesen explained the purpose of the ECC: “The purpose of the ECC is to grow local startups and small businesses, jobs and private investment in Hillsborough County through the strengthening of services and resources that directly support entrepreneurs. The objectives are to increase connections to high-quality mentors and support, enhance access to capital, facilitate collaboration among existing resources and be a clearinghouse for entrepreneurs.”

The ECC hosts daily programs and events. Through the programs and events, entrepreneurs have an opportunity to reach out to the experts on a regular basis. Most programs are open to the public and provide an open forum to collaborate. According to Kroesen, “Diverse programs are a priority.”

Kroesen added, “The ECC was established to provide entrepreneurs easy access to business service providers, resources, mentorship and specialty training. The ECC as-

sists the entrepreneur in navigating the system by combining resources and leveraging expertise that already exists in the community. Through co-location of the county’s services and those of nonprofit service providers and professional organizations, customers have easy access to a wide knowledge base. BOOK LAUNCH AT FINN’S DOCKSIDE

Apollo Beach resident Amy Nielsen is hosting a book launch and signing at Finn’s Dockside Bar & Grill for her newly published book, Worth It. Nielson spent nearly 20 years as a children’s librarian and began writing Worth It during this time. The book started out as a very personal memoir.

The story tells readers about a 17-year-old high school senior girl who was picking out prom dresses and applying for colleges. Suddenly, her father abandons their family, and her addict mother kicks her out. She ends up pregnant by an older and abusive boyfriend and living in a run-down trailer. Set in Central Florida in the late 80s, Worth It is a story of courage, redemption and the power of becoming your own hero.

“Worth It is inspired by my real-life experiences,” said Nielson. “But the more I wrote, the more I learned. I realized that for my story to have a broader reach, I needed to fictionalize it. Being able to be the author of my own story was, for me, transformative. As far as how much of it is biographical, let’s just say that every emotion is real.”

Her inspiration to write the book began in 2007 when Nielson’s oldest daughter was home from college for a weekend. She had plans to hang out with friends.

“She was appalled that as a college student I’d give her a curfew,” said Nielson. “She had no idea that when I was 19 years old no one cared where I was or if I was safe. She was old enough that I felt it was time for her

to know the truth. I wrote her a letter to explain and snuck it in her backpack. When she got back to college, she called me in tears. Her reaction to that twopage letter prompted me to take my story and turn it into a full-length novel.” But it wasn’t until the pandemic that Nielson decided to finish the book. After pitching it to several agents and publishers for about a year, she found a home with Wild Ink Publishing. Since then, she has also started a role at Wild Ink as one of its developmental editors and publicists.

Nielson will be at Finn’s Dockside all day on Friday, May 24, signing books and speaking with anyone who wants to talk about the topics in the book or publishing.

“I was actually there the day I received the email from my publisher that they wanted to sign me as an author,” said Nielson. “That day, I decided Finn’s was where I wanted to have my book launch. They’ve also agreed to put gumbo on the menu for the day since it’s a huge part of my main character’s life.” Nielson said that she plans to sell books at Finn’s, but she encourages anyone coming out that day to preorder.

“In my story, the main character, Angela, is told by so many people, ‘You are worth more,’” said Nielson.

NEW HORIZONS GROUP HOMES 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

In 1992, several parents, teachers and friends of members of the Special Ministries Department of First Baptist Church Brandon identified a need for long-term living facilities for developmentally disabled men and women. A committee was formed to investigate the requirements to undertake this task. Out of this group, New Horizons Group Homes was born.

New Horizons Group Homes has been part of the Brandon community for 25 years. It will be hosting an anniversary celebration on Saturday, May 25, at Brandon Elks Lodge #2383 from 5-9 p.m. Tickets for the celebration are $40 and can be purchased at the New Horizons o f ce or from any board member. Each of the 67 counties in Florida has a University of Florida/ Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension ofce. Hillsborough County’s upcoming events: • Triple Workshops: Composting, microirrigation and rainwater harvesting workshops are ofered monthly from February through October on the first Saturday of the month. Learn how to create your own soil amendments and save water by using a microirrigation kit and rain barrel. Attend one, two or all three. Compost attendees receive a compost bin, kitchen bucket and compost thermometer. Microirrigation attendees will take home the traditional micro kit, a rain gauge and a hose timer. Rainwater harvesting attendees will receive a food-grade barrel that has been drilled and spigoted while learning how to use the water and on which plant materials. Reference materials are provided to attendees

for each of the presentations, and there is a drawing for giveaway items at the end of each class.

• Vermicomposting (Composting With Worms): Find out how to create the bin, what these specialty worms eat and how to harvest the castings. The nutrient-rich worm byproduct works very well in any garden, and you can make your own worm tea for watering plants … not for drinking!

• Vegetable Microirrigation: This kit is a great addition to your vegetable garden. You will learn how to connect the kit to a hose bib and appropriately water vegetables.

• Patio/Container Microirrigation: It works well for patio, container and hanging plants. This kit can connect several pots/containers on your patio, lanai or front porch.

Burgess Perry is a Riverview resident and a retired Army combat medic and nurse. He is also the owner of PAINT CORPS of Tampa.

NEWSOME WOLVES FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM PLAYS FIRST-EVER REGULAR SEASON GAME

The Newsome High School Wolves flag football team competed in the first regular season Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) game hosted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the AdventHealth Training Center, located at One Buccaneer Place in Tampa, on March 26.

Newsome head coach Anthony Silvestri was impressed with the environment at the AdventHealth Training Center. His team has played at the same facility for the Buccaneers Girls Flag Football Preseason Classic, the largest girls’ flag football preseason tournament in the country; however, there were significantly more fans at this regular season game.

“The experience for both my coaching staf and my players was truly special,” said Silvestri. “Having close to 2,000 fans in that facility, coupled with an in-game DJ and band music, made for an exceptional and polarizing environment. All that considered, the mere fact that these high school athletes were playing in an NFL organization’s multimillion-dollar facility is a memory that both programs, players, coaches and families will surely never forget.”

The game, dubbed ‘Battle Grounds,’ featured the Wolves going up against the Alonso High School Ravens. Alonso came out on top 12-6; however, Silvestri thinks that the experience from playing in this environment will help his team going into the playofs.

“I think a game of this magnitude, played in this type of environment and against

such a top-quality opponent, surely rewarded us with very valuable experience,” he said. “We have chosen to play an incredibly difcult strength of schedule this season, so I believe that the quality of our opponents and the experience we have gained from those games definitely has prepared our team to be battle-tested going into these regional playofs.”

The current senior class for Newsome was a part of the state championship team in 2021. The team also made it to the championship game again the following season. The Wolves took care of business in April, winning their fourth straight district championship. Silvestri and his team hope to make another deep playof run this season.

“Our goals have been very clear. We have not talked at all about championships,” he said. “It goes without saying that we certainly want to be a team that’s playing in that final championship game. They are motivated to make a return; however, our focus has been strictly on the opportunity that is in front of us. If we handle each opportunity based on our preparation, then the championship rounds take care of themselves”

The Buccaneers will host the FHSAA Girls Flag Football State Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 10-11.

“There’s a lot of positive buzz happening nationally, especially with the inclusion of flag football in the 2028 Olympic Games,” said Silvestri.

FLORIDA HAWKS FC ANNOUNCES NEW PARTNERSHIP AND DIRECTOR

It is an exciting time at Florida Hawks FC. The soccer club, based out of the FishHawk Sports Complex, recently announced a new Director of Soccer and a partnership with Florida Premier FC.

Jack Dikranian, the new director of soccer, is coming to the Hawks with more than 20 years of youth soccer experience, including time at the club from 2009-17.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jack back to the Hawks,” said Joe Savino, president of Florida Hawks FC’s board of directors. “The entire board was unanimous in this decision and see Jack as a leader that will inspire excellence, foster teamwork and drive the passion for the game within the entire organization.”

A former member of the University of Hartford men’s soccer team and volunteer administrative assistant for the University of South Florida men’s soccer team, Dikranian has big plans for the future of the club.

ECHO LOOKS TO THE COMMUNITY FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR LOCAL FOOD DRIVE

National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day is observed on the second Saturday of May and will be held on May 11 this year. It is the largest food drive in the country and takes place in more than 10,000 cities and towns.

National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day is conducted by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC). The drive was started in October 1991 as a trial program and took place across 10 cities in the United States. It was highly successful and has continued every year since.

ECHO of Brandon has been a recipient of Stamp Out Hunger for many years, and the local nonproft is looking for volunteers for this event on Saturday, May 11. If you’d like to volunteer with ECHO for Stamp Our Hunger, you can visit ECHO’s website at https://echof.org/.

The initiative was formed by a union wanting to give back to those in need, whether it be by donating funds to a charity, collaborating during times of disaster or protecting victims of calamities and crimes.

The date for the drive was later moved to the second Saturday of May. The NALC decided that the best time of year for the food drive would be in the late spring. This was because food banks and pantries ran out of food by May, as donations decreased after Thanksgiving and Christmas.

ECHO of Brandon has been a recipient of Stamp Out Hunger for many years, and the local nonprofit is looking for volunteers for this event.

year-round,” said ECHO’s director of emergency services, Savanna Thompson. “Last year, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collected more than 65,000 pounds of food donated to ECHO to support families in crisis.”

It was the postmen who mostly saw the obstacles that communities faced. On May 11, the postal carriers both deliver mail and collect food donations. As they deliver orders, bills and postcards, people get to help out by filling their mailbags with nonperishable food donations.

“We need more than 600 volunteers that day to make it happen,” Thompson said. “If you can’t volunteer donate, you will get a bag in your mailbox in the first week of May. Fill the bag with new, nonperishable food and put it out at your mailbox for your mail carrier to pick up on May 11.”

Thompson and the team at ECHO hope members of the community will volunteer for this fun event.

“We hope to have a fun day working hard to help those in need,” Thompson said. “Joining together with USPS to make this happen each year is one of the highlights of my year. We live in an amazing community that all comes together so well to help feed the hungry in our community.”

VALRICO SINGER-SONGWRITER FINDS CONNECTION AND EXPRESSION IN MUSIC

Valrico resident Karinna Laneé sang the national anthem for the Tampa Bay Rays’ games at Tropicana Field on March 26 and April 18.

“It’s a huge honor to sing the national anthem. I started doing them locally at the Tony Saladino baseball tournaments. But no matter where I am or how big the crowd is, it’s always very special,” Laneé said.

For Laneé, part of the significance of singing the anthem is how it connects people.

“I’ve been able to connect with so many people because of it. I even met a veteran who was part of the Stars for our Troops project, and he gave me a star from the American flag. That was a really beautiful moment,” Laneé said.

Laneé sees the strength music holds for relationships and growth.

“I think music has so much power to it. Historically, music has been used in every culture to share messages and emotions,” Laneé said. Twenty-year-old Laneé graduated from Blake High School’s Arts Magnet program in 2022. Writing music is therapeutic to

Laneé. She is a student at Florida Gulf Coast University and is working to get her degree in psychology and neuroscience.

“I want to open my own practice someday. We use music therapy to help people express their feelings. It’s a really powerful and beautiful thing, and I love being a part of that. Writing music is healing to me, and if I can help get a good message out to the world, it makes it even more worth it,” stated Laneé.

Laneé said she is always writing. She began releasing music in 2017 and has released five songs. Her most recent song, “Memory Lane,” was released in 2023.

“Memory Lane” is a song about growing up. Laneé tapped into nostalgia to write the song. She said it is a homage to how fun, exciting and easy things are as a kid, and how you can find joy for today in those memories.

ZOOTAMPA CELEBRATES ARRIVAL OF ENDANGERED NEWBORN MALAYAN TAPIR AND PYGMY HIPPOS

ZooTampa at Lowry Park is celebrating the arrival of two new babies as part of its ongoing commitment to the conservation of endangered species: a Malayan tapir (pronounced TEY-per) calf and a pygmy hippopotamus.

The yet-unnamed tapir calf was born during the overnight hours between March 26 and 27 after an approximately 13-month gestation period; both the calf and mom are doing well and are healthy and thriving.

A precious 10 lb. endangered pygmy hippopotamus was born at ZooTampa recently as part of its Species Survival Plan.

The baby calf, with a distinctive coat featuring both spots and stripes, is busy bonding and nursing alongside experienced mother, 18-year-old Ubi. The calf’s patterning will slowly change over the first six months of life to mirror the unique black-and-white pattern of its parents, Ubi and Albert.

ZooTampa celebrated the arrival of an endangered baby Malayan tapir calf. Less than 2,500 remain in the wild.

Ubi was paired with 13-year-old male Albert as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), overseen by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, ensuring the survival of protected, threatened and endangered species. ZooTampa currently participates in more than 100 SSP programs.

“The birth of this healthy calf is another wonderful example of the zoo’s commitment to the conservation of endangered species,” said Chris Massaro, senior vice

president of zoological operations.

Only an estimated 2,500 Malayan tapirs remain scattered in Thailand, Malaysia and on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Their population is declining due to habitat loss from deforestation for agricultural purposes, flooding caused by dam building for hydroelectric projects and illegal trade.

An approximately 10-pound pygmy hippopotamus was born in the evening hours of Sunday, March 31 as well. The yet-unnamed female calf and 20-year-old Zsa Zsa, an experienced mother, are doing well.

The baby hippo appears to be strong and is nursing alongside her mother. The birth marks the fifth endangered pygmy hippo calf born at the zoo.

Zsa Zsa was paired with 22-year-old male and first-time dad Howie as part of the Species Survival Plan.

Fewer than 3,000 pygmy hippos are left in the wild in four countries of West Africa. Over the past 100 years, their habitat has declined dramatically as a result of logging, farming, mining and human settlement.

The popularity of mocktails and nonalcoholic spirits is a trend that has not only taken over the internet but has invaded Tampa Bay. A mocktail is a drink that is made with ingredients like lemonade, sparkling water and often zero-proof spirits but designed to be interesting like a real cocktail, making a sober lifestyle easier than ever.

Many restaurants have incorporated a mocktail menu in order to serve guests who may be interested in a unique drink but are avoiding alcohol.

Here are four spots in Tampa Bay with a great list of mocktails on the menu.

Spend an evening at Jug & Bottle Dept., located in Seminole Heights, and enjoy a vegan dish and nonalcoholic drink. This shop ofers a space where people can relax, eat a vegan dinner and grab a drink. While the shop does ofer alcoholic beverages, there is a long list of zero-proof beer and wine options. DON’T LET INVESTMENTS TAKE A VACATION

Summertime is almost here — and for many people that means it’s time to hit the road. But even if you decide to take a vacation, you’ll want other areas of your life to keep working — especially your investments.

So, how can you prevent your investments, and your overall fnancial strategy, from going on “vacation”?

Here are a few suggestions:

• Check your progress. You want your investments to be working hard for you, so you’ll need to check on their performance periodically — but be careful about how you evaluate results. Don’t compare your portfolio’s results against those of a market index, such as the S&P 500, which tracks the stock performance of 500 large U.S. companies listed on American stock exchanges. This comparison may not be particularly valid because your own portfolio ideally should include a range of investments, including U.S. and foreign stocks, corporate and government bonds, certifcates of deposit (CDs) and other securities. So, instead of checking your progress against a market index, use benchmarks meaningful to your individual situation, such as whether your portfolio is showing enough growth potential based on a compounding rate of return to keep you moving toward a comfortable retirement and other long-term goals.

• Invest with a purpose. When you work intensely at something, it’s usually because you have a defnite result in mind. And this sense of purpose applies to investing, too. If you buy a stock here, and another one there, based on “hot” tips you might have seen on television or the internet, you may end up with a jumbled sort of portfolio that doesn’t really refect your needs. Instead, try to follow a long-term investment strategy based on your fnancial goals, risk tolerance, asset accumulation needs, liquidity and time horizon,

always with an eye toward where you want to go in life — how long you plan to work, what sort of retirement lifestyle you envision, and so on.

• Be strategic with your investments. Over the years, you will likely have a variety of competing fnancial goals — and you’ll want your investment portfolio working to help achieve all of them. That means, though, that you’ll likely need to match certain investments with specifc goals. For example, when you contribute to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar plan, you’re putting away money for retirement. But if you want to help your children go to college or receive some other type of post-secondary education or training, you might want to save in a 529 education savings plan, which allows tax-free withdrawals for qualifed education expenses. Or, if you want to save for a short-term goal, such as a wedding or a long vacation, you might choose an investment that ofers signifcant protection of principal, so the money will be available when you need it. Ultimately, this type of goals-based investing can help ensure your portfolio is always working on your behalf, in the way you intended.

When you take a vacation, you will hopefully be more relaxed and refreshed. But if you let your investments stop working as hard as they should, the results could be stressful. So, be diligent about your investment strategy, monitor it regularly and make those moves appropriate for your situation. By doing so, you can’t necessarily guarantee a long day at the beach, but you’ll have a good chance of enjoying a sunny outlook.

CENTRAL HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY CHAMBER HOSTS 30TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Central Hillsborough County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 30th annual golf tournament to support the chamber.

“It is one of the largest and most anticipated events the Chamber hosts with the goal of providing networking opportunities, promoting members and local businesses and raising funds for the chamber’s initiatives and community projects,” chamber branding and marketing director Teri Perkins.

The tournament also allows professionals and community members to form relationships and strengthen ties in the community.

“It is a full-day event that includes the Midway of Vendors, the Bryan Hindman Electric Ball Drop, a silent auction presented by Socially Funded, a host of rafe baskets and ending with a delicious dinner provided by the venue,” Perkins said.

The annual golf tournament will take place on Saturday, May 18, beginning at 12 Noon. Golfers can walk through the midway of over 20 vendors, such as Gasparilla Pizza and Growlers, for food samples and other items until 1:30 p.m.

The shotgun start will take place at 1:30 p.m. and golfers will play until dinner. Perkins said she hopes to host 128 golfers, or 32 teams of four.

Fourteen chamber members will serve on the Golf Tournament Committee, dedicating their time and resources to ensure the event goes well. During the event, around 20 Junior Reserve Ofcers’ Training Corps student volunteers will assist. Chamber staf, ambassadors and other member volunteers will also support the event.

LAW ACADEMY STUDENTS GO FAR IN MOCK TRIAL COMPETITIONS

Bell Creek Law Academy’s teams have all been hard at work impressing as of late.

For this year’s competitions, its high school mock trial team received a case back in October 2023 involving a student suing her college after the college dismissed her for allegedly using AI to write an essay. With a set of facts, witness a f davits, rules of evidence and exhibits, they prepared arguments as both the plainti f team and defendant team.

Their e f orts did them well, as they won fi rst place in a competition held at the Hillsborough County Courthouse on February 17, defeating Plant High School in the fi nals. Next, they competed in Orlando from March 7-9, representing the 13th Judicial Circuit for the Florida High School Mock Trial Competition.

Charles Leadingham, Bell Creek Law Academy director, said, “We did well. We actually did the best we’ve ever done. … We ended up sixth in the state. Which doesn’t sound impressive, but there are no classifi cations; every high school in the state of Florida can be in the program. … I think 18 of them were represented there.”

Leadingham explained that every team at the fi nals — with 12 members each at most — competes in four rounds against other schools, then the judges choose two teams to compete in the fi nal round for the state championship.

“In addition to the trophy for placing in the state fi nals, Bell Creek was awarded

the Team Professionalism Award and one of our students, Zoe Priolo, was voted ‘Best Attorney.’

It was a very good weekend for the Bell Creek program,” said Leadingham.

Also on February 17, another Bell Creek team took part in the bracketed Closing Argument Competition, which was open to all Hillsborough County high school students not competing in the mock trial competition. The students had to prepare and deliver a closing argument from a given set of facts in front of a panel of judges. Bell Creek students Elina Catan and Lucas Leon won fi rst and second place, respectively.

team took part in the High School Moot Court Competition. Moot court students learn the role of an attorney representing a client in an appeal to the Florida Supreme Court. For the competition, teams comprising two students were given a case packet in November 2023 and had to write a legal brief (written arguments) using case law and precedents to support their position. Bell Creek juniors Zoe Priolo and Ethan Williams argued in front of the Second District Court of Appeal judges and took the win.

The video is then submitted to the state to be viewed by a panel of judges. Last year, Bell Creek’s middle school team was top 10 in the state. We will fi nd the results of this year’s team sometime in April.”

According to Leadingham, the kinds of things Bell Creek Academy’s students have had the opportunity to do are at the law school level.

“You don’t even get to do that in college. That’s law school stu f . For these kids to get that chance is such a great thing for them,” he stated. He added that the skills they develop, such as thinking on their feet, thinking logically, debating professionally before a room full of people and making persuasive closing arguments, can be used in not only the courtroom but also whatever profession they choose.

On top of educating the community on the importance of oral health, Rhodes assembled over 200 dental hygiene bags and donated them to the Metropolitan Ministries homeless shelter.

“When you look at the media, sometimes all you see are the negatives of this world and the positives seem to get overlooked,” said Brynlee Rhodes, Girl Scout ambassador. “Therefore, it is important to remember that there is good in this world, and if you want examples, the Girl Scout Gold Award does just that.”

DANCERS CAN AUDITION FOR THE BRANDON BALLET’S SUMMER INTENSIVE

The Brandon Ballet, a local nonprofit arts organization that has been serving the Greater Brandon area and beyond for 30 years, ofers a summer intensive each year. Dancers who are over 9 years old and who wish to improve their skills can audition to participate in the Brandon Ballet’s three-week summer intensive.

Dancers who wish to pursue dance through high school and beyond should audition for the Brandon Ballet’s summer intensive. Te program is an outstanding one that rivals more pricey summer intensives.

According to the Brandon Ballet’s artistic director, Brentwood Townend, “The ideal candidate is a dancer who wishes to pursue dance through high school or even into college. They can also be a dancer who is pursuing a professional career in the future.”

Townend added, “In most summer intensives, we have had up to 10 highly professional, diferent teachers who are in attendance to help unleash the dancers’ fullest potential. Our summer intensive features 27 hours of instruction weekly. Our summer intensive program ofers the perfect mix of a daily intense dance schedule and structured and safe environment for dancers to grow.”

All students who wish to attend must audition. Please email dance@brandonballet.org to set up and coordinate in-class auditions, or they can arrange a video audition. The fee to audition is $30.

All dancers must be taking at least one and a half hours of ballet. Since ballet is the basis of all forms of dance, a dancer’s ballet technique is of upmost importance.

Townend said, “This summer intensive focuses on just that, along with the fact that it is in the summer when there is not regular school and everyone can focus on just dancing for most of the day without any distractions.”

The summer intensive dates are Sunday, June 2, through Friday, June 21. The tuition is $900.

Townend said, “We want people to know that the Brandon Ballet is both the premier professional ballet company in Tampa as well as the best place for aspiring dancers to train and grow their artistry. What makes our summer intensive unique is that we ofer daily classes in ballet and pointe. We also ofer additional classes in modern, jazz, character and more. We also ofer specialized health and wellness classes taught by practicing professionals. We have a performance opportunity at the end of the three weeks.”
