Grace Notes Flab Is Drab By Debora Coty
Did you hear about the nutty nutrition professor who ate only junk food for eight weeks on a “convenience store diet”? Instead of balanced meals, Mark Haub of Kansas State University consumed Doritos, Little Debbie snacks, and Oreos, but strategically limited his intake to 1,800 calories daily. The result? He lost 27 pounds. The long-term health detriments of such a diet would surely be horrific, but the point is that quantity—regardless of quality—of calories is what counts in weight reduction. Bottom line: If you burn up more calories than you swallow, you lose weight whether those calories come from carrots or carrot cake. Self-discipline is the key to keeping fit physically and also spiritually. It’s good when we decide to make changes on both spiritual and physical planes: to read our Bibles daily, pray more, memorize scripture, make healthier eating choices and increase our exercise regime.
But if we don’t make a specific plan and then diligently work that plan, fitness won’t magically happen. You don’t simply wish for dinner and then sit back and wait for it to magically appear, do you? No, you must do something to make it happen. Plan your menu, go shopping, prepare the food, and pop it in the oven. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a growling tummy and empty plate. Likewise, to become spiritually healthier, we must do something to make it happen. Become proactive. Read a daily devotional. Join a Bible study. Set goals for memorizing scripture. Recruit an accountability partner. Take the spiritual cellulite by the horns. No one ever said discipline is easy, but our divine soul trainer promises to strengthen us as we work toward building spiritual muscles of steel. “Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so,” (1 Timothy 4:8, MSG).

Pastor’s Corner Jomo Cousins, PhD
DEBT By Pastor Jomo Cousins, PhD
Romans 13:8 (MSG) 8Don’t run up debts, except for the huge debt of love you owe each other. Our country is a terrible model for debt management because our national debt has been exploding. As a result, many individuals and businesses find it easy to follow the nation’s trend of getting into debt themselves. Debt is dangerous because it takes us out of control. Whoever holds our debt has power over us. Debt often forces people to make poor decisions when trying to figure out how to repay it. I know there was a season in my life where I was in terrible debt and I was robbing Peter to pay Paul. The stress and anxiety that came with that season was unbearable. Now, I know the other side – being debt-free – and the peace and freedom that come with it. The best policy is, if you can’t afford it, don’t get it! Or, if you do de-
cide to borrow, make sure you take way below the maximum amount you are allowed to borrow. The Bible tells us that the borrower is a servant to the lender (Prov 22:7, NLT). The last thing we should do is put ourselves in that particular position unnecessarily. According to Business Insider (Kane, 2016), an interesting fact is that the word mortgage actually means “death pledge.”1 The term was originally used in British courts back in the Middle Ages. It referred to a loan ending or “dying” either when it was fully paid or when a property was repossessed for nonpayment. Do not let debt be the death of your business. The goal in business is always to have more account-receivables than account-payables! Prayer: Lord, help me to walk a lifestyle of financial freedom and give me the wisdom to avoid putting myself in financial bondage. Lord, I pray for the finances to pay all my debts in a timely fashion, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Excerpt from: 60 Prayers in 60 Seconds Page 25

Books About The Life Of St. Patrick
By Kelly Wise Valdes
The month of March not only marks the beginning of Springtime, but it also is well known for its St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. St. Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday held annually on March 17 and named after the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. Many may associate St. Patrick’s Day with shamrocks, leprechauns, parades, corn beef and cabbage, wearing green and celebratory parties, but the actual St. Patrick himself is well worth celebrating. St. Patrick was a humble and courageous man with determination to win Ireland for Christ. He ordained many priests, created dioceses, conducted church councils, founded multiple monasteries and repeatedly urged his people to follow the teachings of Christ. St. Patrick preached throughout Ireland for more than 40 years. After many years of living in poverty, arduous traveling and suffering, he died on March 17, 461. There are many books that detail the amazing life story of St. Patrick that appeal to all ages and would be meaningful additions to this holiday season. One of the most well-known quotes from St. Patrick sums up his life: “Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me.” Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
The Story of Saint Patrick By Christopher Fay
St. Patrick of Ireland: A Biography By Philip Freeman
Open the pages of this enchanting book and learn about the man who lives in the hearts of all the Irish. Did you know that St. Patrick was a Roman citizen? Or that he was captured by the Celts and made a slave for six years? This book blends St. Patrick’s actual words from his autobiography with the legends about him so that young readers can learn about the life of this exceptional man. Recommended for ages 3-8.
St. Patrick has often been regarded as a man principally created from myth and legend, but this book brings the historic St. Patrick and his world to life. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the British Isles during the last years of the Roman Empire, you’ll read the story of the real St. Patrick, shorn of legend, a man whose deep spiritual conviction and devotion helped to transform a country.
Patrick: Saint of Ireland By Joyce Denham
Saint Patrick Retold By Roy Flechner
St. Patrick is one of Ireland’s most beloved saints, known to Irish, Irish Americans and people all over the world. Young readers will appreciate the watercolor illustrations, and young readers will enjoy reading along with the expressive text. From his early days as a slave to his return as a priest, the story of St. Patrick is one for all children. Recommended for ages 8 and up.
St. Patrick was, by his own admission, a controversial figure. Convicted in a trial in Britain and hounded by rumors that he settled in Ireland for financial gain, the man who was to become Ireland’s patron saint battled against great odds before succeeding as a missionary. This book offers a fresh assessment of Patrick’s efforts and achievements. This is the first biography in nearly 50 years to explore Patrick’s career against the background of historical events in late antique Britain and Ireland.

The Holy Meteora Monasteries, Greece When you visit Greece, the one place you shouldn’t miss is the Meteora monasteries. These ancient monasteries are situated high upon the rocks and are not only beautiful but also comprise one of the most important religious complexes in Greece. The area of Meteora in Greece was originally settled by monks who reportedly lived in caves within the rocks during the 11th century, but when things became more unsettled during Turkish occupation, the monks climbed higher up the rock face until they were living on the inaccessible peaks more than 2,000 feet, or about 180 stories, high. The monks managed to build the monasteries by bringing material and people up with ladders and baskets. This was also how the monasteries were accessed until the 1920s. Now, there are roads, pathways and steps reach the monasteries that sit at the peak of these rock formations that are considered a geological phenomenon. Throughout the centuries, the monasteries attracted not only the religious but also philos-
ophers, painters and poets. Today, only six of the monasteries are active. Visitors have easier access now, and the roads and paths built allow people to be able to visit all the monasteries. Of the six monasteries, the most recognizable is the monastery of Holy Trinity as it was used in the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only during the movie scene where Roger Moore scaled the cliff. Out of all the monasteries of Meteora, Holy Trinity has the most dramatic location; the rock face is a sheer drop and the rock itself is slender, which also makes it the most difficult to access. The monastery was built in 1458 and had many treasures, but most of these were looted by the Germans during WWII. However, in 1970, the Holy Trinity was renovated extensively and remains an active and open monastery for people to visit. For more information on all six monasteries and visitor guides, visit www.visitmeteora.travel.

Encouragement Is More Biblical Than Criticism “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing,” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).. Once in a while, my dog, Max, gets to see his friends at the dog spa. Grooming is expensive, but he’s a huge retriever, and the process takes a solid two hours. Max loves the attention, the brushing, the one-on-one, the room full of other dogs, the pats, the strokes, the compliments. We all need that kind of treatment occasionally. Not the hose-down, dematting and blow-dry so much as the affirmations. I was in a group once where every week someone would be singled
out for “random accolades.” The only rule was that the affirmations had to be authentic. It was powerful. As a leader, over the years I made it my mission to point out positives, compliment guys on their insight and thank them for their participation. When I was a schoolteacher, I made a big sign for the wall in my classroom that read, “Research says it takes seven positives to balance out one negative; I say, ‘Why Risk It?’” I had it laminated. Then, I made another and hung one in the staff room for good measure. There is a need for both affirmation and accountability, but I have found,
time and again, that it is more effective to encourage the good than to constantly shine the spotlight on what’s wrong. In the classroom, my most powerful interventions involved reinforcing positive behaviors that were incompatible with the negatives we wanted to eliminate. Joseph was an autistic child who flapped his lips constantly, until they were bruised and bleeding. Other teachers and his parents had yelled at him, punished him, slapped his wrists and more. My approach was to encourage behaviors incompatible with lip flapping, reinforcing a variety of alternative

fine motor tasks. Everything I rewarded Joseph for doing with his hands was incompatible with lip flapping. The harmful behavior was extinguished within two weeks. It may take more than a pat on the head, a gold star or a treat, but we all absolutely need the encouragement. RESIDENTS HAVE NEW FAMILY MEMBERS THANKS TO OPERATION LOTUS
By Kate Quesada
It is no secret that a dog can be the heart of a family, especially a family that has experienced hard times. Thanks to a generous donation by a local breeder and coordination by charity Operation Lotus, four therapy dogs found new homes, for free, with families last month. FishHawk resident Melanie Brockmeier-Jordy started Operation Lotus after her husband, Leon, passed away in 2012. She has used the charity to help local families in crisis ever since, and the donation of the dogs was something she had always wanted to do. After receiving her own dream dog—Lennon, a King Charles cavalier—in October, Brockmeier-Jordy decided to make it happen. “My wish has been to have and train to be a therapy dog to visit hospitals and schools,” she explained. “Through the process of receiving Lennon, the breeder, Diamondcrest Littles, learned about Operation Lotus and our mission.” Owner Heather Muzzey reached out to Brockmeier-Jordy and offered to donate two puppies from their latest Aussalier litter to Operation Lotus to give to two families who have experienced loss or tragedy and need the love

she said. The first dog, Gucci, went to the Baker family, who had recently suffered three stillborn pregnancies. Versace, the male pup, went to Renata Varnadore, a breast cancer survivor and school counselor who plans to bring the dog to school to help thousands of students. The McNeal family, who recently suffered the loss of their father, Matthew, to brain cancer at 34, received Fendi, and Prada was given to Billy Reese, who is medically retired from the U.S. Army and suffers from PTSD. He recently lost his 14-year-old dog, who provided him so much emotional support. “Donating these puppies to these families has made my heart feel so good,” said Muzzey. “This is as much as I gift to me to be part of this as it is a gift to you.” To learn more about Operation Lotus, visit https://operationlotus.wixsite.com, and for more information about Diamondcrest Littles, visit www.diamondcrestlittles.com.

that a dog could bring. “We were overjoyed to team with them in an effort to find such families,” she said. “When I lost Leon, the unconditional love and comfort that my dog Madisyn brought me is something I will never forget. Dogs know when we are in pain, and as I would cry and grieve, she would snuggle even harder. She just knew I needed her.” Operation Lotus made a Facebook post looking for nominations and received dozens of emails, all telling deserving stories. “It really seemed like an impossible choice to make,” explained Brockmeier-Jordy. “As the letters kept coming in, Diamondcrest Littles then told us they wanted to donate all four of the puppies left in the litter if they were
cleared by the vet.” The four families were chosen by Brockmeier-Jordy and received their dogs on Valentine’s Day. “The families were all overjoyed, and she’s tears of joy as they held their pup for the first time,”

half-day experiences, there’s something for every young entertainer. Debbie Evans, Director of Accounts, cannot stress how wonderful the experience is: “It’s more than just learning about music or learning how to sing. Kids are gaining self-confidence and self-esteem. They blossom into performers who like music and like being on stage.” The traditional camp exposes campers to music and more. Every few hours students can learn an instrument like guitar and drums, take vocal lessons, take acting and improv classes, and do arts and crafts. You can sign up for one week-long camp, or you can sign up for multiple camps. Camps are structured by age, ability, and interest.
Their other camp option is a musical theater camp. Campers work together over the course of a few weeks to put on a show. They will memorize lines, music, and choreography. This summer, depending on the camper’s age, they will perform Oklahoma, Shrek the Musical, All Shook Up, and Six Live in Concert! Evans goes on to say, “If you do the musical camps, you’re learning about teamwork in an ensemble. A lot of parents are always so surprised. They had no idea their child had it within them when they see them perform.” Campe r s must bring their o w n lunche s , drinks, and snacks with snacks also available for purchase. The Florida Academy of Performing Arts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established to support the performing arts through programs at the academy and in the community. Camp registration opens in mid-March. For further details, visit www.FAOPA.org or call 490-2787. Music Showcase is located at 402 Oakfield Dr. in Brandon.
