Greetings from Osprey!

Contents

2015 was a busy year for Osprey – we celebrated the publication of the 500th title in the Men-atArms series, launched our brand new Osprey Games division, and successfully re-launched our Aircraft of the Aces and Combat Aircraft series with an updated look and feel. The acquisition of Osprey by Bloomsbury at the start of 2015 cemented our position as one of the leading military history publishers and presented us with an exciting array of opportunities – some of which can be seen within these pages.

New General Military – p.1–4 Bestselling titles – p.5 Gift Books / Combat – p.6–7

The first half of 2016 is packed full of fantastic new releases, including the concluding volume in our coverage of Finland at War and Professor Dennis Showalter’s comprehensive study, Instruments of War: The German Army 1914–18. With beautifully packaged gift books like SR-71 Blackbird sitting alongside scholarly histories such as The Persian War: A Military History, we hope that there is something for everyone inside this catalogue, from the diehard military enthusiast to the young visitor to a museum just discovering an interest that may last them a lifetime.

Duel – p.8–9 Weapon / Warrior – p.10–11 Campaign – p.12–13 Elite / Men-at-Arms – p.14–15 Aircraft of the Aces / Combat Aircraft – p.16–17 New Vanguard / Air Vanguard – p.18–19 X-Planes – p.20 Osprey Games / Osprey Adventures – p.21–29 Contact List & International Sales – p.30–31 Stocklist – p.32

Our series books cover military history in its entirety, across continents and historical periods. Th ere are so many to consider that I am hard-pressed to pick out highlights, but we are very pleased to showcase a number of titles that have all been voted for by our readers, including Israeli Soldier vs Syrian Soldier: Golan Heights 1967–73, M48 Patton vs Centurion: Indo-Pakistani War 1965, Armies of the War of the Pacific 1879–83 and Valentine Infantry Tank 1938–45. Please examine the catalogue closely to find your own favourites and don’t forget our extensive backlist, arranged by both series and period, available on our website. Following the launch of Osprey Games to a hugely positive critical reception, we have added five new products to its exciting range of board, book and card games. These include the ‘Ultimate Edition’ of the critically acclaimed hidden movement game, Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space. With more from Bolt Action, the World War II wargaming rules, and rules for swashbuckling, hard science-fiction combined arms battles and ancient naval clashes, there is also plenty for the avid wargamer looking for the next challenge. Finally, as we continue the process of integrating with Bloomsbury, we will be making some important changes to how you order our titles, as we move our distribution to Macmillan Distribution Ltd in the UK and Macmillan in the US. Please take note of our new ordering information for orders placed after the 31st January, which can be found on pp.28-29 and on the back of this catalogue. If you have any questions about any of the changes please get in touch with us. Kind regards,

Trail of Hope Anders Army, an Odyssey of Three Continents Author: Norman Davies Available: November 2015 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1603 0 Price: £30.00 / $45.00 / CAN $58.00 Period: World War II Format: Hardback, 600pp Illustrations: Fully illustrated in colour and black and white

Following the conquest of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939, hundreds of thousands of Polish families were torn from their homes and sent eastwards to the Arctic wastes of Siberia. Prisoners of war, refugees, those regarded as ‘social criminals’ by Stalin’s regime, and those rounded up by sheer chance were all sent ‘to see the Great White Bear’. However, with Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa just two years later, Russia and the Allied powers found themselves on the same side once more. Turning to those that it had previously deemed ‘undesirable’, Russia sought to raise a Polish army from the men, women and children that it had imprisoned within its labour camps. In this remarkable work, renowned historian Professor Norman Davies draws from years of meticulous research to recount the compelling story of this unit, the Polish II Corps or ‘Anders Army’, and their exceptional journey from the Gulag of Siberia through Iran, the Middle East and North Africa to the battlefields of Italy to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with Allied forces. Complete with previously unpublished photographs and first-hand accounts from the men and women who lived through it, this is a unique visual and written record of one of the most fascinating episodes of World War II.

Atlas of the Eastern Front 1941–45

Author: Robert Kirchubel Available: January 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 0774 8 Price: £40.00 / $60.00 / CAN $77.00 Period: World War II Format: Hardback, 272pp Illustrations: Fully illustrated in colour

From Operation Barbarossa in 1941 through to the final fall of Berlin in 1945, the war across the breadth and depth of the Eastern Front is brought to life through Osprey’s famously detailed cartography. 128 detailed colour maps illustrate the course of the war as the German armoured spearheads surged to within touching distance of Moscow before being forced back; how they pressed on once more to the banks of the Volga before the disaster at Stalingrad and the gradual retreat that culminated in the fall of Berlin. Meticulously researched, this atlas is indispensable for anyone interested in the Eastern Front during World War II.

The Royal Gibraltar Regiment 1939–2014 Nulli Expugnabilis Hosti

Author: Matthias Strohn Available: April 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1532 3 Price: £40.00 / $65.00 / CAN $84.00 Period: Multi-period Format: Hardback, 208pp Illustrations: Fully illustrated in colour and black and white

A History of the Irish Guards in the Afghan and Iraq Campaigns 2001–14 Author: Marcus Cowper Available: March 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1774 7 Price: £25.00 / $35.00 / CAN $45.00 Period: Modern Warfare Format: Hardback, 384pp Illustrations: 64pp plate section in colour and black and white

In 2014 the Royal Gibraltar Regiment celebrated its 75th anniversary. This is the history of the regiment and its preceding formations showing how a locally raised volunteer unit developed into a modern, light-role infantry battalion, based in Gibraltar and operating all over the world. The book takes the reader back to the beginning of British rule in Gibraltar and the involvement of the local population in the Great Siege during the 18th century. From there it embarks on a journey that describes the history of the Volunteer Corps in the First World War and the Gibraltar Defence Force which was established in 1939, the Gibraltar Regiment during the Cold War and finally the Royal Gibraltar Regiment in its current form. This journey is brought to life with the help of photographs, illustrations and the words of the regiment’s soldiers.

Irish Guardsmen have been involved in all aspects of the campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq – from in Kabul in 2001, through the invasion of Iraq in 2003 to the eventual withdrawal in 2009, and the campaign in Helmand from 2006 to 2014. This participation has been at every level from individual to battalion and widely dispersed – a complete picture of the British Army’s experience in the post 9/11 years. This study, based on official records and numerous interviews with those who took part – from the brigade commanders down to the guardsmen on the ground – is a unique picture of one battalion’s experiences through some of the most testing times the British Army has faced.

Finland at War

The Continuation and Lapland Wars 1941–45 Authors: Vesa Nenye, Peter Munter, Toni Wirtanen, Chris Birks Available: March 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1526 2 Price: £30.00 / $40.00 / CAN $47.00 Period: World War II Format: Hardback, 304pp Illustrations: Fully illustrated in colour and black and white

In the aftermath of the Winter War Finland found itself drawing ever closer to Nazi Germany and eventually took part in Operation Barbarossa in 1941. For the Finns this was a chance to right the wrongs of the Winter War against Russia. Years of uneasy trench warfare followed, known as the Continuation War, during which Finland desperately sought a way out, as German dreams of victory were dashed and the Soviet Union built the strongest army in the world. In the summer of 1944, the whole might of the Red Army was launched against the Finnish defences on the narrow Karelian Isthmus. With Stalin forced to divert his armies to the race to Berlin an armistice agreement was reached, the harsh terms of which forced the Finns to take on their erstwhile German allies in Lapland. Featuring never-before-seen photographs and firsthand accounts, this concluding volume details the high price Finland paid to retain its independence and freedom.

The Legend Lives On Authors: John Dibbs, Tony Holmes Available: May 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1549 1 Price: £30.00 / $45.00 / CAN $53.00 Period: World War II Format: Hardback, 224pp Illustrations: Fully illustrated in colour and black and white

Instrument of War

The German Army 1914–18 Author: Dennis Showalter Available: June 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1300 8 Price: £20.00 / $30.00 / CAN $35.00 Period: World War I Format: Hardback, 320pp Illustrations: 16pp plate section in black and white

The Spitfire turns 80 on 5 March 2016, and the passion for the RAF’s best-loved fighter is running at an all-time high. There are more than 50 Spitfires flying in the world today, and John Dibbs has shot virtually all of them ‘on the wing’ in his breathtaking style. This eye-catching book combines a unique collection of stunning photos with poignant first-hand accounts of flying the aeroplane in combat, from some of the most famous Aces to ever pilot the Spitfire, and from some of the pilots forgotten by history. Chronicling the history of the most iconic of British aircraft, this is a ‘must have’ purchase for aviation enthusiasts.

Drawing on more than a half-century of research and teaching, Dennis Showalter presents a fresh perspective on the German Army during World War I. Showalter surveys an army at the heart of a national identity, driven by – yet also defeated by – warfare in the modern age, which struggled to capitalise on its victories and ultimately forgot the lessons of its defeat. Exploring the internal dynamics of the German Army and detailing how the soldiers coped with the many new forms of warfare, Showalter shows how the army’s institutions responded to and how Germany itself was changed by war. Detailing the major campaigns on the Western and Eastern Fronts and the forgotten war fought in the Middle East and Africa, this comprehensive new volume reveals operational strategy, the complexities of campaigns of movement versus static trench warfare, and the changes in warfare.

Operation Agreement

Jewish Commandos of the Special Interrogation Group in the war against Hitler Author: John Sadler Available: June 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1488 3 Price: £20.00 / $28.00 / CAN $34.00 Period: World War II Format: Hardback, 376pp Illustrations: 16pp plate section in black and white

The Special Interrogation Group (SIG) was the most exceptional of Special Forces. Created to raid behind enemy lines posing as German troops, the SIG was largely made up of German Jews who were all too aware of the dangers they faced – capture meant either death or deportation to a concentration camp. In 1942, Operation Agreement saw the SIG tasked with taking part in a raid on Tobruk, where they were to make up the land-based element of the attack. Disguised as POWs under escort by German-speaking SIGs the group covered close to 1,700 miles of desert to reach their target. The ruse worked perfectly and the SIG went on to destroy a number of coastal guns before eventually being overwhelmed by Axis forces. This is the history of the SIG, revealing startling details about the group and offering moving insights into the Jewish volunteers putting their lives on the line to fight against the evils of Nazism.

Spearhead of the infantry Author: Thomas Anderson Available: June 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1128 8 Price: £30.00 / $45.00 / CAN $53.00 Period: World War II Format: Hardback, 256pp Illustrations: Fully illustrated in black and white

The victory of a few Greek city-states over the world’s first superpower was an extraordinary military feat that secured the future of western civilization. All modern accounts of the war as a whole, and of Marathon, Thermopylae and Salamis, the best-known battles, depend on the ancient sources, foremost amongst them Herodotus, but generally quote very little from them. This is the first book to bring together Herodotus’ entire narrative and interweave it with other ancient voices to present the original texts that comprise almost all that is known about this immense clash of arms.

The Sturmartillerie was a key part of Germany’s armoured arsenal throughout World War II. Its armoured assault guns were designed to support the artillery on the battlefield, largely using the purpose-built Sturmgeschütz infantry support gun. This new and exhaustive study will detail the development and operational history of this innovative force, as well as describing how its role and the tactics it employed changed from the ‘glory years’ of Blitzkrieg through to the desperate defence of the last years of the war. It will also describe the technical development and evolution of the vehicles employed, as well as including combat action reports and excerpts from interviews with veterans.

Forgotten Sacrifice

Collision of Empires

The Arctic Convoys of World War II

In Forgotten Sacrifice, historian Michael G. Walling tells the complete story of the Allied forces’ Arctic Convoys and the vital role they played in helping Russia repel the Germans. Punctuated by torpedo attacks in freezing conditions, Stuka dive bombers, naval gun fire, and weeks of total darkness in the Arctic winter, with ships disappearing below the waves because of the ice and snow that weighed down their decks, the tale also uncovers the political calculations that needlessly put countless men into harm’s way. Drawing on hundreds of oral histories from eyewitnesses and veterans of the convoys, plus original research into the Russian Naval archives at Murmansk, Walling offers a fresh retelling of one of World War II’s pivotal yet largely overlooked campaigns.

The War on the Eastern Front in 1914

One of the primary triggers of the outbreak of World War I was undoubtedly the myriad of alliances and suspicions that existed between the Russian, German, and Austro-Hungarian empires in the early 20th century. Yet much of the actual fighting between these nations has been largely forgotten in the West. Driven by first-hand accounts and detailed archival research, Collision of Empires seeks to correct this imbalance. The first in a four-book series on the Eastern Front in World War I, Prit Buttar’s dynamic retelling examines the tumultuous events of the first year of the war and reveals the chaos and destruction that reigned when three powerful empires collided. A war that was initially seen by all three powers as a welcome opportunity to address both internal and external issues would ultimately bring about the downfall of them all.

The Special Boat Squadron was Britain’s most exclusive Special Forces unit during World War II. Highly trained, totally secretive and utterly ruthless, the SBS was established as an entity in its own right in early 1943. Unlike its sister unit, which numbered more than 1,000 men, the SBS never comprised more than 100. Led by men such as the famed Victoria Cross recipient Anders Lassen, the SBS went from island to island in the Mediterranean, landing in the dead of night in small fishing boats and launching savage hit and run raids on the Germans. Through unrivalled access to the SBS archives and interviews with the surviving members of the unit, Gavin Mortimer has pieced together the largely forgotten dramatic exploits of this elite fighting force. In this new and updated paperback edition, featuring additional content including new text and photographs, the unit and its members are finally granted the recognition that they so richly deserve.

From its early beginnings in World War II, the Special Air Service (SAS) has won renown in some of the most dramatic, dangerous and controversial military special operations of the 20th century. It is a secretive and mysterious unit, whose operations and internal structures are hidden from the public eye. Now, one of its longest-serving veterans offers a glimpse into the shadowy world of the SAS. Rusty Firmin spent an incredible 15 years with ‘The Regiment’ and was a key figure in the assault on the Iranian Embassy in London in May 1980. He also served with the SAS in the Falklands and in Northern Ireland during the 1980s. This is the unforgettable chronicle of Rusty’s combat experiences – a fascinating and intimate portrayal of what it was like to be part of the world’s most respected Special Operations Force.

The American Revolutionary War (1775–83) pitted the soldiers of the newly formed Continental Army against the Redcoats of the British Army – a highly trained, professional organization manned by long‑serving and experienced infantrymen with a formidable reputation forged during the Seven Years’ War. So, how were the hastily trained, poorly supplied Continental infantry able to hold their own to secure victory in the conflict – and the future of their young nation? David Bonk answers this question, using extensive first‑hand accounts allowing a modern audience to glimpse what combat was like for soldiers on both sides at three pivotal encounters: Brandywine, Monmouth Courthouse, and Cowpens. Featuring full‑color artwork, specially drawn maps, and archive illustrations, this engaging study offers key insights into the tactics and combat performance of six representative Continental and Redcoat infantry units committed to battle in these three crucial actions that shaped the outcome of the American Revolutionary War.

Providing a unique glimpse into the experiences of regular British and French infantry in North America during the French and Indian War, this book reveals what it was like for soldiers fighting at some of the most pivotal engagements of the conflict: La Belle-Famille, Quebec and Sainte-Foy. Far from home, the equipment and tactics initially employed by both colonial powers were more suited to the European theatre, but as the war ground on, tactical doctrine progressed as both armies learned lessons that would be utilized by succeeding generations of soldiers. Packed with first-hand accounts, dramatic illustrations and a technical analysis of the evolving nature of warfare on the American continent, this book puts readers in the shoes of the soldiers who played a crucial role in shaping the future of North America.

The Allied airborne and amphibious landings on D-Day opened up the long-awaited Second Front against Nazi Germany, but after overcoming the German coastal defenses at Utah and ‘Bloody Omaha,’ the US Army found itself having to contest every hedgerow and street in a nightmarish battle of attrition. Even once Normandy had been secured, the gruelling battles on the Siegfried Line, the Ardennes and elsewhere would test both sides to the limit right to the end of the war. Featuring full-colour artwork, maps and archive photographs, this study offers key insights into the tactics, leadership and combat performance of six representative US and German infantry units pitched into three pivotal actions at the height of World War II.

Orde Wingate, a military maverick and proponent of guerrilla warfare, knew that Allied victory against the Japanese in Burma’s jungles and mountains required a new type of soldier – the Chindit, indoctrinated with special training and physical conditioning. Opposing the Chindits were veteran Japanese infantrymen, including those of the crack 18th Division, who had proven time and again their ability to adapt to the harshest conditions, fight – and win. The trial of strength between these two foes would play a key part in the savage struggle for Burma, and this book tells the dramatic story of their clashes from a small‑unit perspective. Featuring vivid full‑colour artwork and focusing on details of the experience of the soldiers on the ground, this book offers a glimpse into what it was like to fight, on both sides, in three brutal engagements that would hasten Japan’s defeat in Burma in World War II.

Israel seized the strategically critical Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six Day War in an audacious and determined operation, yet when the Yom Kippur War broke out the Israeli military were exposed by the effectiveness of the newly confident and dangerous Syrian army. In the Golan only luck, herculean Israeli efforts and tactical misjudgements by the Syrians were to allow the Israelis to maintain control. In this book, three pivotal encounters in the Golan are assessed, supported by artwork, maps and photographs, tracking how both sides’ forces evolved over the period.

As the Battle of Britain approached its conclusion, two new versions of the famous Spitfire and Messerschmitt Bf 109 arrived on the scene. Seeing that the Luftwaffe were stepping down their incursions into British airspace, the RAF went on the offensive. The Spitfire Mark II, and increasingly the Mark V, would fly over the picturesque English channel in fighter sweeps – but waiting for them was the Bf 109F ‘Friedrich’. Yet despite the reversal of offensive and defensive dispositions, and despite the Luftwaffe deploying the bulk of their fighter strength to the Eastern Front in 1941, the Jagdflieger were able to inflict severe losses on their RAF counterparts. With stunning artwork and detailed analysis, this volume provides a pilot’s view of the dramatic clashes between these two legendary fighters at the height of World War II.

Designed in response to the poor performance of America’s fighters during the Vietnam War, the F-15 Eagle was conceived as a dedicated air superiority fighter. However, having trained for 15 years in the Eagle it wasn’t Eastern Bloc–operated MiGs that the F-15 pilots eventually came up against, but the pilots of Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi air force. This book analyses the combat between the American and Soviet ‘Cold War’ fighters, examining the technical abilities of the aircraft and the different levels of training available to opposing pilots and groundcrews during the conflict. Highly illustrated throughout with artwork and photographs, this book places the reader in the cockpit during one of the last major dogfighting air wars in modern history.

Pilots from VT-8 inspect one of the first TBF-1s delivered to NAS Norfolk in January–February 1942. This elevated view clearly shows off the bombardier’s position behind the pilot. The second cockpit also had flight controls, which were deleted as unnecessary after the 50th production aircraft. Many of VT-8’s early Avengers were returned to the factory for modifications to improve functioning of the wingfolding mechanisms, thus preventing the squadron’s scheduled deployment to the Pacific on board the carrier USS Hornet (CV-8). The US Navy went to war with a proven dive-bomb er in the form of the Douglas SBD Dauntless. Given the problems with the Devastator and the Mark 13 torpedo, the Dauntless was the US Navy’s only consistently effective carrier-based offensive weapon in 1942–43. and only a small number of Devastators available. The first production examples of the new aircraft, called the Avenger, were produced in January 1942. By November of that same year productio n surpassed 100 aircraft per month at the Gr u m m a n plant, but requireme nts still exceeded supply. To meet this demand, the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors began building the Avenger in late 1942 – such aircraft were designated the TBM. In all, 2,291 TBFs and 7,546 TBMs were completed. The first fleet unit to receive the Avenger was Torpedo Squadron (VT) 8 in April 1942. It subsequently gave the TBF its combat debut June 1942 during the Battle in of Midway when six aircraft were employed in a landbased role. As previously mentioned, Midway also saw the end of the Devastator combat service, so the TBF ’s was now the sole US Navy torpedo-bomber. By any measure, the Avenger must be seen as a huge success, and it duly became the most produced naval strike aircraft in history. It was reliable in service and proved able take tremendous punishmen to t. It was also versatile, since it could perform in both the torpedo attack and conventional bomber roles. The only aircraft was its principal problem with the weapon, the unreliable Mark 13 air-launched torpedo.

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 witnessed the largest tank battles seen since World War II, notably between India’s British-made Centurion Mk 7s and the American-made M48 Pattons fielded by Pakistan. The ensuing battles would demonstrate that the Centurion, with its powerful gun and lower profile, generally proved superior to the faster, lighter but overly complex Patton. Featuring full-colour artwork, expert analysis and absorbing combat accounts, this is the full story of the clash between two leading tanks of the Cold War era that were never designed to fight each other but rather to line up on battlefields as allies.

The Vought Corsair was the first American single-engined fighter to exceed 400 mph and establish dominance over the legendary Mitsubishi Type Zero-sen. The Ki-84 Hayate was introduced by the Japanese specifically to counter this growing American dominance of the skies over the Pacific. Built in greater numbers than any other late war Japanese fighter, nearly 3000 were completed between 1944 and 1945. This volume examines the clashes between the Corsair and Ki-84 in the closing stages of the war, revealing how Corsair pilots had to adapt their techniques and combat strategies to adapt to these newer types.

Designed as a point defence interceptor to counter the high altitude atomic bomber threat, the Mirage IIIC was transformed into multirole combat aircraft by Dassault, and as such had to battle with the MiG-21 to secure air superiority in the Middle East during the Six Day War of June 1967. Superior Israeli tactics and rigorous training saw the Mirage IIICJ units prevail against superior numbers of Egyptian, Syrian and Iraqi fighters, despite the combat persistence of the Soviet-built MiG-21. Using the latest research, first-hand accounts from both sides and specially commissioned artwork and maps, Shlomo Aloni tells the dramatic story of the dogfights fought in the skies over the Middle East.

As the war in North Africa escalated, Axis war efforts became increasingly dependent on supply lines across the Mediterranean. To try to cut off these lines of supply the British deployed submarines from the besieged island of Malta with the directive to sink as much merchant convoy tonnage as possible. Italy responded by sending her torpedo boats to protect and escort Axis convoys. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork and carefully chosen archive photographs, this engaging study assesses the evolving battle between Britain’s submarines and Italy’s torpedo boats during the struggle for primacy in the Mediterranean at the height of World War II.

The flintlock or firelock musket is one of the most iconic weapons in history: first used on the battlefields of the Thirty Years’ War and the English Civil War, it was carried by both sides at Bunker Hill, Waterloo and the Alamo, and dominated warfare for more than 150 years, with military service as late as the American Civil War in the 1860s. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork, this engaging study examines the role that the flintlock played in close-order combat on European and other battlefields around the world. Employing first-hand accounts to show how tactical doctrines were successfully developed to overcome the weapon’s inherent limitations, this volume offers a comprehensive analysis of the flintlock’s lasting impact as the first truly universal soldier’s weapon.

Influenced by the German MP 40 and the British Sten, the .45-calibre M3 ‘Grease Gun’ served as the primary US submachine gun for almost half a century. Designed to replace the expensive Thompson SMG, the M3 was issued to airborne troops thanks to its compact design with sliding wire stock, and was favoured by armoured crews right up to the beginning of the 1990s, seeing service in 1991’s Operation Desert Storm. In Korea and Vietnam, reconnaissance troops and special-operations forces were at times armed with the M3A1 – also available in a suppressed version – and it was the first SMG issued to the US counterterrorist unit Delta Force. Featuring full-colour artwork, first-hand accounts and archive and close-up photographs, this is the engaging story of the M3 submachine gun.

The Barrett M82A1 and its derivatives are among the most successful sniper rifles ever manufactured. Now entering its fourth decade of service, the short-recoil, semi-automatic system is capable of firing a devastating .50-cal round with lethal accuracy over distances of more than 2km. Unconfirmed reports from Afghanistan in 2012 accredit the Barrett with one of history’s longest ever kills at 2,815m. This is the technical history of a rifle initially developed as a sporting gun, but which evolved into a long-range sniper rifle and a formidable military anti-materiel tool, designed to neutralize everything from enemy vehicles to parked aircraft. Adopted by snipers across the world, the Barrett rifles have seen active service in the First Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and have become an important addition to police, armed services and Special Forces units alike.

World War I’s defining weapon for many, Germany’s MG 08 machine gun won a formidable reputation on battlefields from Tannenberg to the Somme, while its more mobile successor, the MG 08/15, played a central role in the revolutionary developments in infantry tactics that characterized the last months of the conflict. Even in the 1940s the two weapons would be pressed into service with German forces fighting in a new world war. Drawing upon eyewitness battlefield reports, this absorbing study assesses the technical performance and combat record of these redoubtable and influential German machine guns, and their strengths and limitations in a variety of battlefield roles.

Uttered at the height of the fierce battle for Bellau Wood, the phrase came to define the Corps, establishing their ‘first to fight’ ethos in the public eye. This history follows the experiences of the Marines during the Great War, from their training in the US and France through the fighting in the trenches and battlefields of the Western Front and right up to their occupation duties in the Rhineland. Packed with first-hand accounts and detailed information from the USMC History Division at Quantico and published to coincide with the 100th anniversary of America’s involvement in World War I, this is a timely analysis of one of the US Marine Corps’ finest hours.

US Army Green Beret in Afghanistan 2001–02 Author: Leigh Neville Illustrator: Peter Dennis Available: April 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1400 5 Price: £11.99 / $19.00 / $23.00 Period: Modern Warfare Format: Paperback, 64pp

In October 2001 the most militarily advanced nation on earth came into conflict with one of the least developed nations as American forces poured into Afghanistan. The tip of the spear was drawn largely from the units of the United States Army Special Forces – the famous Green Berets, who together with the Special Activities Division of the CIA and the Afghan Northern Alliance overthrew the Taliban in a lightning campaign that redefined modern warfare. This new study reveals the gruelling Green Beret training, the specialized equipment they used and traces their deployment throughout the campaign, from the first insertion of forces through to the fall of Kabul and Kandahar, the Taliban uprising at the notorious Fort of War in Mazar-e-Sharif, and the clearance of Tora Bora and Operation Anaconda in the Shahikot Valley.

Fortress Each book in the Fortress series examines the history, evolution, military architecture and natural setting of some of the world’s most important fortification systems. Covering fortresses throughout history, from ancient times through to the modern day, this series is ideal for military historians, modellers, wargamers and fortification enthusiasts.

Though primarily fought in the field, the American Revolution saw fortifications play an important part in some of the key campaigns of the war. Field fortifications were developed around major towns including Boston, New York and Savannah, while the frontier forts at Stanwix, Niagara and Cumberland were to all be touched by the war. This book details all the types of fortification used throughout the conflict, the engineers on all sides who constructed and maintained them, and the actions fought around and over them.

Following the disastrous retreat from Burma in April 1942, China had become isolated from re-supply except for the dangerous air route over the Himalayas. The Burma Road, which ran from Lashio, south of Myitkyina, through the mountains to Kunming was closed as a supply route from Rangoon after the Japanese conquest. Without military assistance, China would be forced to surrender and Imperial Japanese Army forces could be diverted to other Pacific war zones. This is the history of the ambitious joint Allied assault led by American Lt. Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell, and featuring British, American and Chinese forces, which clashed with three skilled regiments of the Japanese 18th Division. Packed with first-hand accounts, specially commissioned artwork, maps and illustrations this book reveals the incredible Allied attack on Myitkyina.

By 1864, Union forces in the Western Theatre outnumbered their Confederate counterparts nearly two-to-one, and under the aggressive leadership of Major-General William Tecumseh Sherman, they pushed into Georgia. What followed was one of the most dramatic and tactically interesting campaigns in the Civil War, as Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Jonnston fought a series of running battles to decide the fate of Atlanta. In this new book, author James Donnell explores the entire campaign, covering all of the important commanders and giving full force organization charts for each side. Aided by a numerous maps, Donnell explains the movements of both armies, focusing on the major battles that ultimately decided the campaign. Also included is a discussion of the controversial replacement of Johnson with the much more offensively-minded John Bell Hood, who would eventually lose the city of Atlanta and lead his army to destruction.

Against the wishes of Hitler, German forces under Erich von Manstein were forced to retreat following the failure of the Kursk offensive of July 1943. The weakened force only had one possible refuge, behind the wide Dnepr River. The race to the natural defensive line was on, with the Soviets launching one of their largest offensives of the war – over 2 million men were on the move. Expert Eastern Front historian Robert Forczyk describes the dramatic four-month campaign that saw the Red Army not only succeed in crossing the Dnepr at multiple points, but also liberate Kiev, capital of the Ukraine. Revealing new detail about the largest Soviet airborne operation of the war and the increasingly desperate delaying tactics employed by Manstein as catastrophic casualties mounted on both sides, Forczyk charts the course of the battle that confirmed to many observers that the relentless Soviet advance westward could not be halted. Berlin would be next.

As the American Revolution continued, the British refocused their fight on the southern colonies in the hopes of triggering an outbreak of loyalism that would sweep the rebels aside. Under Sir Henry Clinton they captured Savannah in 1778, and Charleston in May, with Lord Cornwallis being left in command with just 8,500 men under him. Too thinly spread to guard the 15,000 square miles he was responsible for, Cornwallis went on the offensive, invading North Carolina and using Camden as a launch pad. This new history reveals how Cornwallis was able to use his aggressive strategy to great effect and how the overconfidence of the re-formed American forces under Horatio Gates was to result in a shocking defeat on the night of 15 August – a defeat that would allow Cornwallis to push deep into North Carolina the following year, where he would only be stopped by the American victory at Yorktown.

The final month of fighting in Europe saw the Wehrmacht battle on in a desperate last stand, driven on by the increasingly delusional orders issued by Adolf Hitler. With Berlin surrounded by the Red Army and British and US forces approaching from the west it was clear that the Third Reich was on the brink of defeat. Yet rather than celebrate their victories as they crushed the last pockets of German resistance, the Allies began to eye each other nervously across the battletorn continent. The alliance with the Soviet Union was already on shaky ground, and America and Britain feared that Russia would emerge as the major power in post-war Europe. This book traces the final military operations of the war and the political agendas that guided them, analysing how the Allied strategies in the final days of World War II were a hint of the future suspicion that would drive the Cold War.

In Operation Totalize LieutenantGeneral Guy Simonds’ II Canadian Corps launched an attack from its positions south of Caen, striking south-southeast toward the high ground that dominated the town of Falaise. The initial break-in achieved rapid success, but fierce German resistance prevented the Allies from capitalizing on their promising start. Operation Totalize subsequently failed to secure a decisive operational-level victory, allowing substantial elements of the German army to extract themselves from encirclement in the Falaise pocket. Featuring full colour artwork, archival photographs and detailed maps, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of the most innovative Allied offensive of the Normandy campaign which, had it been successful, would have effectively crippled German forces in Western Europe and possibly brought about an early end to the war in Europe.

In the wake of a disastrous defeat at Chickamauga, Union forces were in disarray and the tactically vital city of Chattanooga was under siege and on the brink of falling. The situation required outstanding leadership and President Abraham Lincoln decided Ulysses Grant was the man for the occasion. In early October, Grant was promoted to command of the Military District of Mississippi and told to clean up the mess created by Chickamauga. With those orders began the Chattanooga Campaign. Supported by full colour artwork, photographs, maps and birds-eye-views, this book tracks how, over the next three months, Grant orchestrated the movements of three Union Armies and led them into a series of battles that saw them first raise the siege of Chattanooga, then, in three battles in three days, break the Confederate army entrenched in the heights overlooking Chattanooga.

In this highly illustrated book Special Forces veteran Gordon Rottman offers a truly comprehensive treatment of US World War II gear, covering not only basic belts, pouches and packs, but also mess gear, first aid gear, tools, and camping gear – essentially everything that a GI had to keep him alive and operational on the battlefield. Illustrated with wartime photos, new photos of kit from private collections and colour plates showing both laid-out kit and halffigures of soldiers wearing it, this is set to become the primary equipment information resource for anyone interested in the kit and webbing used by US forces from D-Day to Berlin.

In the age of modern warfare the changing landscape of the 21st century battlefield has demanded a transformation within the US Marine Corps Special Operations. Adapting to a huge range of combat environments, an enormous array of specialist uniforms, protective armour and battlefield electronic devices have been developed to facilitate missions in the most extreme conditions. A special forces operator may now have available to him a dozen distinct types of body armour and two dozen different weapons; never before in American military history has so much been given to so few. Authored by J. Kenneth Eward, professor at the American Military University, and illustrated throughout with photographs and meticulous colour plates, this volume offers the first detailed, authoritative study of the characteristics, and performance in the field, of the most modern combat gear and weapons provided for USMC specialist operators to date.

When the soldiers of the Western Allies – America, Britain, Canada, and Free France – finally celebrated “Victory in Europe” on May 8, 1945, there were few left in the frontline combat units who had landed in Normandy just 11 months earlier. Battles including Normandy, “Market-Garden”, the Scheldt estuary, Alsace, the Hurtgen Forest, the Ardennes, the Rhineland, the Rhine crossing and the final drive across Germany had taken a heavy toll on these frontline infantry – and it was not just the faces that had changed. Equipment, uniforms and tactics had all been revised, reflecting hard-won experience and technological improvements. Victory 1945 explains and illustrates the experience of these troops as they were seasoned in battle. Drawing upon both a mass of official documents and personal memoirs, the text is supported by a comprehensive order of battle, frontline photos, and color plates showing a variety of uniforms, weapons and equipment. Highly-trained and immensely skilled, the SAS are widely regarded as one of the best Special Forces units in the world. Their missions are uniquely diverse, ranging from counterterrorist responses at home and abroad, through deep penetration for reconnaissance and guiding air strikes; training and supporting indigenous forces; counter-insurgency in collaboration with US Delta Force, SEAL Team 6 and other foreign Special Forces; mobile operations in support of conventional forces; targeting terrorist leaders and man-hunting war criminals, to ‘direct action’ raids. This book charts the changing organization and operational emphases of the Regiment over the past 25 years. It sheds light on the SAS’s involvement in the Troubles of Northern Ireland, their operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the widespread use of the SAS in counter terrorism and counterinsurgency operations since 9/11. 9

Written by an expert on modern Special Forces units and the operations they undertake, this book explains the evolution of the Rangers’ missions in Panama, the first Gulf War, Somalia and the post 9/11 invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. It reveals the training and organizational changes that the unit has undergone and investigates in particular how their doctrine and tactics have changed during the 14-year war in Afghanistan. At the beginning of the war the Rangers were an elite light infantry unit of picked men tasked with short duration recon raids and securing ground behind enemy lines in support of Special Forces; they have since evolved into a special-mission unit themselves – on the cusp of being assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command. leigh neville

Byzantine Naval Forces 1261–1461

After the recapture of Constantinople Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos was determined to bring glory back to the Byzantine Empire. To achieve this, he established an Imperial Fleet and raised new regiments of elite marine troops. This work provides a comprehensive, illustrated guide to the unit history and appearance of these men, who were at the cutting edge of the last great flourish of Byzantine naval power. They won victory after victory in campaigns throughout the 1260s–70s, and though successive periods of decline and partial resurrection followed, these marine units survived until the very last flickers of Byzantine resistance were extinguished. Drawing upon early literary sources, the rich evidence of period illuminated manuscripts, frescoes and other iconography, Raffaele D’Amato details the lasting legacy of the swan song of Byzantine naval power.

The Pacific War was the greatest and bloodiest war ever fought in the Andean region, and is one of the most important conflicts in South American history. By the 1870s Chilean military superiority and expansionist policies exploded into full scale conflict. This book examines the troops, uniforms and equipment used by the Chilean, Peruvian and Bolivian forces and traces the events of the war from the early naval blockades, through major pitched battles, to the final guerrilla campaign in occupied Peru.

This is a comprehensive guide to the armies of Imperial China that fought a series of increasingly damaging wars with Western powers and Japan over the 19th and 20th centuries. Starting with the forces that faced the British and French during the two Opium Wars, Philip Jowett’s keenly researched study traces the vast range of troops that were drawn into the internal wars and rebellions of the 1850s and 60s, the open warfare in North Vietnam, and those involved in the strings of defeats suffered during the First Sino-Japanese war and the Boxer Rebellion. Providing an unparalleled insight into the array of troop types and evolving uniforms, this is a history of the sometimes painful modernization of China’s military forces during one of its most turbulent periods of history.

At its height the Roman Empire stretched across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, maintained by an army of modest size but great diversity. In popular culture these soldiers are often portrayed in a generic fashion, but continuing research indicates significant variations in Roman armour and equipment not only between different legions and the provincially-raised auxiliary cohorts that made up half of the army, but also between different regions within the empire. With reference to the latest archaeological and documentary evidence Dr D’Amato investigates how Roman Army units in the Western provinces were equipped, exploring the local influences and traditions that caused the variations in attire.

Once Nazi Germany had conquered Norway in 1940, just a handful of Gruppen flying the Bf 109 and Bf 110 fighters were able to dominate the air in the Arctic Circle. Yet as the dual threats of the RAF and the Red Air Force grew, the Luftwaffe was forced to increase its fighter presence to full Geschwader strength with the formation of JG 5 Eismeer (Ice-sea) in early 1942. The struggle for the frozen skies of the arctic raged on until the end of the war as the embattled JG 5 produced some of the Eastern Front’s leading aces, pilots of the calibre of Theodor Weissenberger, Heinrich Ehrler, Walter Schuck, Franz Dörr and Jakob Norz. Featuring first-hand accounts from the pilots, extensive research from a leading authority on the Luftwaffe, and illustrations of the aircraft in unique winter camouflage, this book is a comprehensive guide to the Arctic Experten and the planes they flew.

Royal Prussian Jagdgeschwader Nr III was the third of Germany’s vaunted fighter wings to be formed during World War 1. Commanded by Hauptmann Bruno Loerzer for its entire existence, it was composed of the celebrated Jasta ‘Boelcke’, along with Jagdstaffeln 26, 27 and 36. As Germany’s fortunes waned in the summer of 1918, the aces of JG III nonetheless did their best to stem the tides of British, French and later American aircraft they encountered. Aces such as Carl Bolle, Paul Bäumer, Heinrich Bongartz, Hermann Frommherz, Rudolf Klimke and the infamous Hermann Göring all carved their names in the record books flying in this formidable formation. This book examines the tactics, achievements and personalities of one of the deadliest of Germany’s aerial units.

This is the story of the Japanese Imperial Navy fighter aces that flew the J2M Raiden and N1K1/2 Shiden in the Pacific Theatre of World War 2. This fully illustrated volume uses first-hand accounts to provide a fascinating take on some of the most remarkable fighter pilots of the war. It reveals how, despite the structural and engine maladies that plagued the development of both aircraft, these men went on to claim significant scores against considerable odds in the final desperate defence of Japan.

Spitfire Aces of the Channel Front 1941-43

MiG-17/19 Aces of the Vietnam War

At the start of the Vietnam War, the Vietnam People’s Air Force were equipped with slow, old Korean War generation fighters – MiG-17s and MiG-19s – types that should have offered little opposition to the cutting-edge fighter-bombers such as the F-4 Phantom II, and the F-8 Crusader. Yet when the USAF and US Navy unleashed their aircraft on North Vietnam in 1965 the inexperienced pilots of the VPAF were able to shatter the illusion of US air superiority. Taking advantage of their jet’s unequalled low-speed maneuverability, small size and powerful cannon armament they were able to take the fight to their missile-guided opponents, with a number of Vietnamese pilots racking up ace scores. Featuring information previously unavailable in the west and only recently released from archives in Vietnam, this is the first major analysis of the exploits of Vietnamese pilots in the David and Goliath contest with the US over the skies of Vietnam.

Combat AIRCRAFT Books in the Combat Aircraft series concentrate on one of the greatest aircraft in aviation history, the technology behind it and the men who flew it, providing a valuable resource for anyone interested in military aviation history.

80 years after the Spitfire was first developed it remains an icon of military aviation. Though many associate its victory during the Battle of Britain as the high point of its career, the years following were of equal importance. Having weathered the initial storm, at the start of 1941 Fighter Command took the fight to the Germans with offensive missions over the Channel. This book reveals how first using the Spitfire I and II, and then following the introduction of the Bf 109, the cannon-armed Spitfire V, RAF squadrons embarked on a range of missions including one of the most important air battles of the war, over Dieppe on 19 August 1942. Alongside British pilots were squadrons manned by exiled Europeans and pilots from the RAAF, RCAF and RNZAF and in just three years over 100 of these pilots racked up ace status in the Spitfire.

The Douglas AD Skyraider is considered the most effective naval aircraft of the Korean War despite the emergence of new jet fighters that captured public imagination. Built to replace the World War 2 workhorses such as the Dauntless, Helldiver and Avenger dive and torpedo bombers, the Skyraider operated numerous combat missions from carrier decks and from US Marine Corps land bases throughout the conflict. Drawing from personal interviews with AD pilots, the authors paint a harrowing picture of the deadly combat of this often forgotten air war as pilots took on Chinese and North Korean forces during daring night attacks and whilst outnumbered in daytime assaults.

Imperial Roman Warships 27 BC–193 AD

The Roman Empire was not only built by the strength of the legions but also by a navy that was the most powerful maritime force ever to have existed. At the height of its power the Roman Navy employed tens of thousands of sailors, marines and craftsmen, coming from every corner of the three continents under the rule of the Caesars. This book reconstructs the ships’ design and explains their role in the wars that forged the Empire. As well as examining Rome’s warships, it reveals the organization of the navy and the tactics that were developed to make the most of Rome’s superiority in naval technology.

When the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyed Russia’s battle fleet during the Russo-Japanese War, it marked the emergence of Japan as one of the world’s major naval powers. Japan’s navy had been built up over just two decades, with the IJN acquiring a fleet of modern foreign-built warships. Coupled with the IJN’s leadership and high levels of training, this proved enough to destroy the fleet of one of the world’s historic naval powers. This book explains in concise detail how the IJN’s fleet of 1904‒1905 was developed, from its battleships and armoured cruisers to the torpedo boats that launched ‘the first great torpedo attack in history,’ and outlines the history of the naval campaign against the Russian fleet.

Railway Guns of World War II

World War II marked the zenith of railway gun development. Although many of the railway guns deployed at the start of the conflict were of World War I vintage, Germany’s ambitious development programme saw the introduction of a number of new classes, including the world’s largest, the 80cm-calibre Schwerer Gustav and Schwerer Dora guns, which weighed in at 1,350 tons and fired a huge 7-ton shell. This book provides an overview of the railway guns used by all combatants during World War II, with a special focus on the German railway artillery used in France, Italy and on the Eastern Front, and analyzes why railway guns would largely disappear from use after the war.

The Valentine was the most produced and most widely used British tank of World War II. The Valentine first saw combat during Operation Compass in November 1941 and remained one of the main medium tanks in British service into 1943. As the Churchill became more prevalent the Valentine was relegated to use as specialist and tankdestroyer variants, which would remain in service until the end of the war. This book describes the evolution of the Valentine design and weighs up its impact on the battlefield. Although widely regarded today as one of the weaker tanks to be fielded during the war, it was exceptionally numerous, with more Valentines produced than any other British tank.

Although military rockets have been used since the Middle Ages, it was not until the Soviet Union pioneered the concept of Multiple Rocket Launchers (MRLs) just before World War II that they emerged as a decisive weapon. In the modern era, these Soviet/Russian Katyushas have served in combat in Afghanistan, Chechnya, and Georgia. Developed to fill the operational need for massed artillery fire support, the MRL possesses enormous destructive power and a devastating psychological impact. This new volume provides a detailed survey of Soviet and Russian Federation MRLs from their development in 1938 to the present day, focusing on the history, design, and specifications of self-propelled ground MRL systems, as well as towed, static, railway, and naval mounts.

In the years after World War II, new guided missile technology offered surface ships the chance to destroy airborne threats from afar, thereby preserving their role in naval warfare. This book examines the technology and combat performance of Britain’s guided missile destroyers over half a century. Uniquely among modern destroyers, three of these classes have been tested in battle against the aircraft and missiles of another modern navy ‒ in the Falklands War ‒ as well as being deployed during the Gulf War, where one scored the first missile-vs-missile kill in history. Written by an expert on British naval equipment, this book assesses the changing technology of the Royal Navy’s destroyers over half a century, including an examination of the Royal Navy’s newest and most capable warship, the Type 45. at the outbreak of world war I, the ottoman Navy was equipped with a varied fleet of mostly outdated ships, acquired with little thought to naval strategy. but then the ottoman empire entered the war in dramatic fashion, offering shelter to a modern german battlecruiser and light cruiser, which then joined the ottoman fleet. with these two modern ships and a fleet of pre-dreadnoughts, old cruisers, minelayers and torpedo boats, the ottoman Navy fought the russian Navy for control of the black sea and tackled the might of the royal Navy and French Navy during the gallipoli campaign.

before world war I, german strategists devised a plan for a worldwide trade war against britain, using a handful of cruisers, armed ocean liners, and the complex etappe network of resupply ships. when war broke out these few ships, including the famous raider Emden, fought a brave, occasionally spectacular war against overwhelming odds, but by spring 1915 the last of these ships had been sunk or interned.

Originally designed as a carrier-borne long-range interceptor armed with radar-guided missiles and tasked with defence against missilelaunching bombers, the Phantom II went on to establish itself as one of the most important multi-role fighter, attack and reconnaissance aircraft of the 20th century. Arguably the United States’ most important aircraft in the Vietnam War, acting as both workhorse and deadly MiG interceptor, the Phantom was also a mainstay of Atlantic Fleet operations ‒ intercepting Soviet bomber and reconnaissance aircraft and turning them away from carrier groups at the height of the Cold War. This book reveals the design and development history of the naval Phantom, its variants and the exported designs adopted by other NATO countries. Packed with illustrations, photographs and first-hand accounts, it provides a technical history of one of the most famous aircraft ever built.

Despite their short stature, Dwarves are amongst the fiercest and most feared fighters of all the races. Thanks to their great strength and stamina, Dwarves march to battle in thick armor and carrying numerous heavy weapons. This book compiles all of the information known about these grim warriors and how they practice war. From an initial examination of the fighting methods of the individual Dwarf soldier, it expands to look at how they do battle in small companies and vast armies. It covers all of their troop types from the axe men that form the front lines of battle to their deadly accurate crossbowmen, and noting their specialist troops such as their famous siege-engineers. Also examined are their tactics in specific situations such as underground fighting. Finally, the book examines a few specific battles in great detail in order to fully demonstrate the Dwarven way of war.

Although few in number, elves produce the most skilful and deadly warriors of all the races. Renowned for their archery and agility, they are mostly associated with hit and run tactics; however, they should not be underestimated in open battle. This book compiles all of the information known about these elegant warriors and how they practice war. From an initial examination of the fighting methods of the individual Elf fighter, it expands to look at how they do battle in small companies and vast armies. It covers all of their troop types from their justifiably famous bowmen and swordmasters to their lightning-fast cavalry, making note of regional variations and highly specialized fighters such as war mages. Accompanied by numerous illustrations in both colour and black and white, the book examines a few specific battles in great detail in order to fully demonstrate the Elf way of war.

Even as the discovery and exploitation of hephaestium helped bring the Civil War to its close in 1869, the arms race it engendered resulted in a cold war nearly as bitter and violent as the open hostilities had been. With neither side willing to rely solely upon the talents of their scientific establishments, saboteurs, double-agents, and assassins found ample employment. Against this backdrop of suspicion and fear, thousands of Americans – Northerners and Southerners alike – headed west. Some to escape the legacies of the war, some to find their own land, some for the lure of that great undiscovered strike of hephaestium that would make them rich, and some simply to escape the law. Ahead of these pioneers stood the native tribes, behind them followed the forces of two governments, while to the north and south, foreign powers watched closely for their own opportunities. This newly unearthed collection of the works of Miles Vandercroft fills a considerable gap in our knowledge of the travels of that remarkable individual, and also provides a fascinating guide to the costume and equipment of the forces active in the great drive westwards. art fina not l

In the dying days of World War II, Nazi Germany spent increasingly large amounts of its dwindling manufacturing capability on the construction of a small fleet of flying saucers capable of travel beyond the atmosphere. While these saucers were too few in number to affect the eventual outcome of the war, they did allow for a small, but fanatical, Nazi group to escape Germany, first to Antarctica, and then to the Moon! For the first time, the history of the Nazi space program has been revealed – with a focus on the design, construction, and layout of the moonbase. Using detailed maps, the entire moonbase is reconstructed, noting the locations of various important features, such as the orbital ‘sun gun’, the Vril generator, the air recyclers and water extractors, the mines and mineral processing plants, and hangers for the saucers. The book also covers the various attempts by the allies to overcome this last Nazi stronghold through both subterfuge and outright battle.

En Garde!

Swashbuckling Skirmish Wargames Rules Authors: Craig Woodfield Illustrator: Peter Dennis Available: January 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1074 8 Price: ÂŁ11.99 / $17.95 / CAN $23.50 Format: Paperback, 64pp

En Garde! is a small-scale skirmish game based on the successful Ronin rules, in which small groups of warriors fight each other for honour or riches. Rather than just rolling a few dice, the rules allow players to make tactical decisions about how the models that they control will fight – offensively, defensively, or by applying special skills and abilities. En Garde! covers the conflicts of the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries, when black-powder weapons started to become common in battle but martial prowess still determined the outcome. Play as Border Reivers, Conquistadors, Landsknechts, Aztecs, French Musketeers, Caribbean Pirates and many more, in scenarios that evoke classic engagements of the genre. Simple campaign rules allow multiple scenarios to be played in sequence and permit warbands to develop over time. An appendix is also included to provide brief rules for supernatural creatures of the period and new abilities and equipment to fight them, making En Garde! the perfect ruleset for gamers who want something a bit different from the norm.

Beyond today’s horizons lie uncountable wars still to be fought by mankind – on battlefields, against foes, and with weapons that can only be imagined. With Horizon Wars, wargamers can bring these future conflicts to the tabletop, no matter their exact vision of the future of warfare. Combining the feel of real-world combat and tactics with versatile and quick-to-learn rules, Horizon Wars is a 6mm company-level game that incorporates ground forces, aircraft and the titans of the battlefield – mechs. Whether you want to pit a handful of mechs against each other in quick clash of patrols, or line up combined-arms forces for a huge battle, the game remains fast-moving and enjoyable. While a number of time periods are presented, each with their own unique setting rules, the emphasis in Horizon Wars is on the players’ preferences. Optional rules can be employed or ignored to develop scenarios that take place in the near future, in corporate-dominated dystopias, in post-apocalyptic wastelands, or at the very edge of the known universe. Similarly, units can be built from the ground up, allowing players to tailor their forces to suit the mission objectives or their figure collections.

Authors: John Lambshead Illustrator: Giuseepe Rava Available: June 2016 ISBN: 978 1 4728 1418 0 Price: £11.99 / $19.00 / CAN $23.00 Format: Paperback, 64pp

Poseidon’s Warriors is a set of wargaming rules for largescale naval actions between fleets of Classical galleys from the Greek and Persian clash at the battle of Salamis to the battle of Actium that decided the fate of Rome. With so many of these battles taking place around islands or in narrow channels and shallow waters, sneaky tactics and cunning manoeuvres are a hallmark of warfare of this era, and the rules use an integrated turn system to allow a commander to position ships to go in and ram without being rammed in return, or to employ feints and traps to tempt the enemy out of position and leave his ships vulnerable to a follow-up strike. With data for ships throughout the period, rules for famous admirals, historical scenarios, a campaign system and a brief historical summary for those who wish to refresh their memory of the era, Poseidon’s Warriors offers everything players need to bring to the tabletop the battles and campaigns of the first great age of naval warfare.

A Tiny Game for Kids Escape From The Burrito

2+

Do you have several sheets or blankets handy?

In this game the kids wrap the grownup up like a burrito, then run away as the grownup escapes. Start by giving the kids a few blankets or sheets (the tortillas). Then, stand in the middle of the room with your hands at your sides. You are now ready to be burrito’ed. (Gulp) Begin the game: count down from twenty as the kids wrap you as tightly as they can in the sheets and blankets. When you reach zero, shake loose and chase the kids! Tip: Keep the sour cream away from the children.

Ren, a young girl who lost her family under terrible circumstances, and has fallen into a catatonic state from trauma. Feth, a foreign boy with the ability to read the hearts of others. They will work together to wake Ren by rebuilding the memories closest to her heart. But the ravens have come to feast on her heartbreak, and they will not be denied.

The Ravens of Thri Sahashri is a two-player cooperative card game unlike anything else you have played.
