Greetings from Osprey! Bring out the cake and blow out the candles because 2018 marks Osprey’s 50th anniversary! Given that we have now reached this milestone, I’ve been delving into our history to see how things have changed over the years. hough our irst series, Aircam, is no longer with us, many of our series have been around for decades, including Men-atArms (1971), New Vanguard (originally as Vanguard in 1978) and Elite (1984). hese have been joined by dozens of new series that have expanded our list, including Weapon (2010), Combat (2013) and X-Planes (2016). his year, we are adding a brand new name to this venerable list, Air Campaign, which will take a new look at the greatest air wars in history, from the Battle of Britain to Operation Rolling hunder. You can ind more about this exciting new addition to our list on page 12. Since 2003 we have also been publishing General Military books and in the irst half of 2018 we have some very exciting titles. Morning Star, Midnight Sun (p.2), Jefrey Cox’s much-anticipated sequel to Rising Sun, Falling Skies (2014) publishes in February, and we are marking another anniversary, the centenary of the end of World War I, with 1918: Winning the War, Losing the War (p.2) which comes out in March. Our Games division was launched back in 2008, and this area of the company has gone from strength to strength ever since. One of our strongest game titles has been the multi-award-winning Frostgrave (2015) which gets its ifth supplement, Frostgrave: he Maze of Malcor (p.26) in May. It has gone into company lore that in 1974, Men-at-Arms series editor Martin Windrow thought that the series had maybe one year left in it. hat series now has over 500 books, and the whole Osprey list totals over 3,000. Over the 50 years we have grown, evolved and taken on new challenges, but what has remained unaltered is our goal of producing high-quality, informative books for military history enthusiasts. Here's to the next 50 years!

The World War II exploits of Darby’s Ranger and Combat Photographer Phil Stern
Best remembered for his iconic images of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and JFK, Phil Stern’s service during World War II as a combat photographer has remained unknown until now. Stern's catchy 1940s lingo, honest and intimate observations, and humour transport the reader 70 years back in time to experience life alongside the hardscrabble Rangers, in the desert oases of Morocco, and on the muddied beaches of Mussolini’s Italy.

La Spezia naval dockyard, 19 May 1915: Europa is being converted into a seaplane carrier; the framework for the hangars is already in place. The ship was a former steamer built in Britain

sioned as Manila, she had four derricks which were also rigged for two pairs of square and lug sails. Shortly after, however, these were replaced by two simpler derricks positioned between each pair of forward and after holds. In December 1914 an Italian Navy commission led by Alessandro Guidoni inspected Quarto while she was at 5 the Taranto Naval dockyard. On 9 January 1915 the commission submitted a report to the Naval Staff in which it recommended the requisition and the subsequent purchase of the ship, judging Quarto’s characteristics suitable for conversion as a vessel which would have a dual role as a seaplane carrier and a submarine tender. The Naval Staff endorsed the report and Quarto was 6 duly purchased for 740,000 lire. Meanwhile, the structural elements and other materials needed for the conversion were fabricated and stored at La Spezia Naval dockyard. The ship arrived in La Spezia in early February 1915 and was later commissioned into the Regia Marina as Europa. (The name referred not to the continent but to the Greek mythological nymph Europa, who had been 7 kidnapped and seduced by Jupiter. ) As with Elba, the design for the conversion of Europa was drawn up by Alessandro Guidoni. Work began at La Spezia on 20 February 1915 and proceeded quickly, being completed in the first half of May 1915. It involved the removal of much of the existing fittings and equipment, including the two derricks and a number of the large ventilation cowlings located on the upper deck and the deckhouses. The technical requirements for the conversion of Europa as a seaplane carrier were: the construction of hangars, workshops, and store rooms for spares and other materials; the adaptation of the holds to COURBET

accommodate the special tanks needed for the stowage and pumping of aviation fuels and lubricants; the creation of spaces for stowing broken-down seaplanes (wings, fuselages, engines and other components); and the fitting out of additional spaces for the officers and men needed to maintain, handle and operate the embarked seaplanes. In addition, the requirements to operate Europa as a submarine tender called for other features: the construction of workshops and facilities for recharging submarine batteries; the adaptation of the existing holds for housing other special tanks for the fuels and lubricants needed for submarine propulsion engines/motors and auxiliary equipment; the creation of store rooms for torpedoes and submarine spares; and the fitting out of living spaces to house submarine crews when the boats were not operational and moored alongside for rest and/or maintenance. Europa’s relatively small beam (14.07 metres) was the major issue to resolve because of the need to install two large hangars needed for stowing the desired number of seaplanes. A greater width of hull would also have been advantageous for handling the embarked aircraft. Moreover, the relatively high length/beam ratio (8.5) led to poor transverse stability and seakeeping, and this problem would be exacerbated by the weight of the hangars and other heavy structures above the upper deck. On the other hand, it was necessary to exploit fully the available internal volume for workshops and living spaces. It was therefore decided to embark several tens of tons of lead ballast and to extend the forecastle deck over the entire length of the hull. This solution led to the creation of a new upper deck, officially called ‘canopy deck’ because it became the foundation base for the hangars, which were designated ‘canopies’. There were long galleries on either side beneath the new deck which provided light and ventilation for the corresponding closed section of the former upper deck. A further pair of galleries was located below the forward section of the forward hangar, on both sides of the ship. The forward and after hangars were 34 and 37 metres long respectively. Both extended the full beam of the ship

Battle of Britain 1940

The Luftwaffe’s ‘Eagle Attack’
Reducing Japan’s great island fortress
Author: Doug Dildy Illustrator: Graham Turner Available: January 2018 ISBN: 9781472820570 Period: World War II
Author: Mark Lardas Illustrator: Mark Postlethwaite Available: January 2018 ISBN: 9781472822444 Period: World War II
he Battle of Britain was not just a heroic story of ‘he Few’. he Luftwafe’s campaign against Fighter Command was also a new type of air warfare: the irst ever ofensive-counter-air operation against an integrated air defence system. Based on original documents, this rigorous new analysis of a much-mythologized campaign argues that the Luftwafe’s own mistakes led to its defeat, which kept alive the chance to defeat Nazi Germany.
In 1942, the massive Japanese naval base and airield at Rabaul was a fortress standing in the Allies’ path to Tokyo. It was impossible to seize Rabaul, or starve the 100,000-strong garrison out. Instead the US began an innovative, hard-fought two-year air campaign to draw its teeth, and allow them to bypass the island completely. Mark Lardas explains how this legendary air campaign was conceived and fought, and how its success provided a roadmap for the rest of the Paciic War.

Rolling Thunder 1965–68
Malta 1940–42
Vietnam’s most controversial air campaign Author: Richard P. Hallion Illustrator: Adam Tooby Available: February 2018 ISBN: 9781472823205 Period: Vietnam War
In 1965, the nuclear-focused US air forces had to hastily adapt to ighting a conventional war. Hampered as they were, they were then crippled by inadequate strategy and rampant political interference, and Rolling hunder became a byword for pointless, inefective brutality. Dr Richard P. Hallion, a vastly knowledgeable air power analyst, explains how Rolling hunder became the ultimate ‘how-not-to’ air campaign, which ironically led to a renaissance in US air power.

The Axis’ air battle for Mediterranean supremacy Author: Ryan K. Noppen Illustrator: Graham Turner Available: February 2018 ISBN: 9781472820600 Period: World War II
In 1940, the strategically vital island of Malta was Britain’s last toehold in the central Mediterranean, capable of wreaking havoc among Axis shipping. Multilingual aviation analyst Ryan Noppen describes the air campaigns to knock Malta out of the war, led irst by Italy and then Germany, and explains why they ultimately failed.

Last Days: Zombie Apocalypse is a skirmish-scale miniatures game of survival horror. It pits players against each other in a nightmarish near-future where the dead have returned to life and are feasting on the living. Players build their own factions, representing desperate civilians, military personnel, or hardened survivors, and must explore, scavenge, and ight in order to survive another day. Rival gangs are only one of the dangers they face – mindless zombies wander the streets, driven by insatiable hunger and drawn by the sound of combat! Scenarios and campaigns allow you to develop your gang, gain experience and recruit new henchmen to build up your strength or replace the inevitable casualties of the zombie apocalypse.
This supplement for Dracula's America: Shadows of the West contains a host of new rules and material, including: Two New Factions: The Forsaken, ragged survivors of the 7th Cavalry tormented by a bestial curse, and the White Dragon Tong, crimelords with an agenda as mysterious as the powers they wield. The Hunting Grounds: Scenarios and encounters that focus on this mythical realm and the power and threats found within it. Outlaws, Mercenaries and Bounty Hunters: New campaign rules, allowing you to turn to a life of crime, bring in wanted fugitives, or sell your gun to the highest bidder. New Territory, New Monsters, New Gear, and New Skills: All designed to give you more options and keep your posse ighting.
Burrows & Badgers is a tabletop skirmish game set in the ancient realm of Northymbra, a kingdom where mice, badgers, toads, and other animals wear armour, wield swords, and cast magic spells. Your tabletop becomes part of Northymbra, whose ruined villages, haunted forests, and misty marshes play host to brutal ambushes and desperate skirmishes. Lead your warband from battle to battle, and uphold the name of your faction, whether you stand with Reinert’s Royalists, the Freebeasts of the Fox Families, or simply for your own glory or survival. Scenarios link into ongoing campaigns, where heroes make their names, and the assistance of infamous mercenaries might mean the difference between victory and defeat.

The fate of a nation hangs in the balance. Israel cannot afford to lose a single battle. One defeat would mean the destruction of the tiny Jewish state. Not waiting to be attacked by the Arab forces massing on its borders, Israel strikes irst. Hundreds of tanks sweep across the border and punch through the enemy defences, with infantry following up to clear the way for the advance to continue. Fate of a Nation brings the Arab-Israeli Wars to the tabletop, allowing players to recreate the sweeping operations that helped to shape the Middle East. Kobolds & Cobblestones is a skirmish wargame for rumbles between gangs in the city of Ordinsport's seedy underbelly. Players hire gangs of criminals, thugs and enforcers from a number of classic Fantasy races, and attempt to take control of the underworld and establish themselves as the city's kingpins. Playing card-based mechanics and a cunning bribery element keep players on their toes, as a one-sided battle can turn around in a lash.
Outremer: Faith and Blood is a skirmish wargame featuring small groups of warriors ighting in Outremer during the Crusades. Whilst suitable for one-off skirmish encounters, the focus is a structured and progressive campaign setting in which players are able to watch their forces grow and develop. Players will also be able to recruit mercenaries and agents such as Hashashin and Varangian survivors to bolster their forces – potent, but expensive, additions that will add a distinct lavour to every encounter.
