MORE ABOUT RED SALMON ARTS’ FOUNDER, RAÚLRSALINAS Xicanindio elder, poet, and human rights activist raúlrsalinas is the Executive Director of Resistencia Bookstore/Casa de Red Salmon Arts. In addition to literary readings and guest lectures at universities and cultural centers around the country raúlsalinas also conducts intensive creative writing clinics locally and throughout the country with disenfranchised youth. These clinics are held in conjunction with a variety of arts organizations, correctional facilities, and social service agencies. raúlrsalinas’ work with various political movements has earned him an international reputation as an eloquent spokesperson for justice. He has worked extensively with the American Indian Movement and the International Indian Treaty Council. He was a co-founder of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee. raúlsalinas is the author of four poetry collections Viaje/Trip (chapbook), East of the Freeway, and Un Trip Through The Mind Jail, plus the forthcoming Indio Trails: A Xicano Odyssey through Indian Country (Wings Press) as well as two spoken word CDs Los Many Mundos of raúlrsalinas and Beyond the BEATen Path. His literary work has appeared in numerous anthologies and journals. He is also an adjunct professor at St. Edwards University, Austin, Texas. In 2002, raúlrsalinas received the Louis Reyes Rivera Lifetime Achievement Award presented on behalf of La Causa student group at Amherst College, Mass. and The Dark Souls Collective. In March of 2003, he was honored with the Martin Luther, Jr., César Chavez, Rosa Parks Visiting Professorship Award given by the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

RED SALMON ARTS PROGRAMMING RED SALMON ARTS Housed in Resistencia Bookstore, Red Salmon Arts is a grassroots Native American/ Chicana/o based cultural arts organization with a history of working within the indigenous communities of Austin since 1983. Currently, Red Salmon Arts boasts the longest running literary venue in the city and has had the honor of hosting events with critically acclaimed writers such as Rudolfo Anaya, Simon Ortiz, Ana Castillo and Sharon Bridgforth, among a number of talented writers ranging in ages from 9 to 80. Located in the heart of the southside, Red Salmon Arts, plays a unique role in bringing high caliber and emerging writers, artists and events to the underserved south and east Austin neighborhood communities. Our current programming focus is threefold: Save Our Youth, The Café Libro Series, and Red Salmon Press.

SOY’s founder, esteemed poet/activist raúlrsalinas, has conducted extensive creative writing workshops in local schools and juvenile justice facilities. In addition to nurturing the creative efforts of Austin’s young writers and artists, these workshops have also helped the participants develop verbal/written communication and conflict resolution skills. SOY is proud to have produced three “chapbooks,” Emerging Voices Volume 1, In Our Own Words, and Voices from the Heart. Emerging Voices includes poetry and essays by students from O’Henry Middle School. In Our Own Words features poetry from residents of Austin’s Settlement Home, a residential treatment facility for girls. Students and staff from the Travis County JJAEP contributed their writing for Voices from the Heart.
RED SALMON PRESS Red Salmon Press is an editorial collective founded in 1983 that publishes and distributes community newsletters and informational leaflets such as Notas de la Resistencia and Native Voice. Red Salmon has also published several literary collections including. From the Heart by Linda Reyes, East Of the Freeway by raúlrsalinas, Nile & Other Poems by Teresa Palomo Acosta, a Calaca Press/Red Salmon Press CD production of Salinas’ poetic work entitled Los Many Mundos of raúlrsalinas, and Beyond the Beaten Path, produced by Stephen Bruton. Red Salmon Press is dedicated to the retrieval of a people’s literary heritage and the development of emerging young writers/readers.
SAVE OUR YOUTH (SOY)
CAFÉ LIBRO SERIES SOY is the most cherished literary project of Red Salmon Arts. Through its emphasis on cultural knowledge and pride, SOY seeks to empower youth “at risk” and redirect selfdestructive activities into positive and creative outlets through participation in workshops focusing on culture, arts, and literacy. Soy is a term of affirmation, meaning “I am” in Spanish. The young people we engage are “hard to reach” youth in alternative educational settings, and those under supervision by the
The Café Libro Series nurtures emerging writers by creating a performance space for readings at Resistencia Bookstore and other neighborhood venues. The series provides artists the opportunity to build self-confidence and performance skills by presenting their work to a live audience. Through the Café Libro Open-mic Series, audience members and writers alike are exposed to the work of regionally and nationally known writers and musicians. The series has been held for over twenty years and provided a safe place and supportive venue for hundreds of emerging writers to share new work.
