DWELLING BY URBANISM Housing can help to fix the urban space

Location: Ghent, Belgium Program: Housing and urban hybridity 2020

The project is trying to recover the relation between historical identical public space with the dwellers by creating the housing system suitable for the structure of households nowadays. The relation between dwelling and urban space is the key point of the topic. The site, Meulestede, was an area that prospered due to the quick industrialization while also decaying in the 1960s when the local industry relocated.

The pedestrianized urban space is based on these three levels of publicity. The ground floor consists of the living unit with internal shared space and the space for the neighborhood, such as a small shop, common kitchen and the renovated church as a community library.

The common space is trying to create a micro-climate system that affects living conditions. The food growing produces the oxygen by sunlight and absorbing the carbon dioxide, for which the greenhouse-like long corridor is also the social space for every person in the building. The surface with the semi-common space is the similar form with half or total transparent material. In order to deeply integrate the relation between the dwellers and the spatial participation, and also for the adaptability of market square, there is a larger event on every weekend that converts one of the semi-courtyard places to the chilling bar providing water and light food. It connects the activities in the community kitchen giving the common meal for villagers.

LEISURE HARBOR, LOGGIA TO ISLANDS

Where The Route Counters a Boundary Between Sea and Land Location: Luano, Liguria, Italy Program: Hotel and commercial 2021

As the linear formed ancient town, Loano in the 20th century faced the reformation of urban space as well, by transportation, the harbor and the train station. Those two are dramatically located on the opposite side of the linear town with the longest way going through all the places where tourists and locals meet, visit and get involved. The harbor had been evolved since 1938 from a fishing oriented to the yacht center. The absence of publicity will be filled in the future by our architectural intervention. The end of the route, would be an epicenter of the town on which a small cruise can stay for a festival where the harbor can contain all the events. The very end of the pier would be a forestry park as the first impression of people, then the speculating path with loggia leads the certain order by all kinds of service and public activities. The entire harbor is linked by the stone column path which represents the traditional architectonic value of urbanism and the city, while the trees as the symbol of nature also intervene the walking experience by opening space and eyeview.

The buildings and public spaces on the route are like islands that take the activities, at the same time, the path plays the role as bridges which provide a total integration with seascape as the eternal element of nature view. Both the library and the theater, have a frame of scenery of the sea as the daily life watching in a special way.

CIVIC IDENTITY I HOW DEEP THE UTOPIA WHERE WE LIVE Location: Tunghai University, Taichung, Taiwan Program: Student dorm 2016 What the project intends is to fix the contradiction of city life and the initial concept of student community in the university. It starts with the study on morpho-typology of Taiwanese building and collectivity in the campus. As a student, a studio room is usually called a home, which signifies an important concept about the prototype of a home in Taiwanese society. I chose the typical street house as the prototype. The campus is located on one side of a hill in the west of Taichung city on which the sunrise can be seen from the east direction. At the end of 20 century, the city and the edge of campus had a conflict eventually. Students are still living in the contradiction which is not only about environment but also on the aspect of education between religious spirit and secular concepts.

The behaviorology study starts with the initial subjective perception of living space for students. As a student who has been living in that utopian campus for 5 years, I imagined how the getting up, thinking and other behavior could be related with the city context. The environment forms the behavior of users. The home of mine is an absolutely lonely space but also as my last shelter. These two contrast living spaces provide two types of idealistic dwelling in my mind. I tried to push myself into the behavior of loneliness. For the public space, the atmosphere should be quiet but with the perception that delivered the same with the old campus. To emphasize the meaning of shelter, the tea place is the spiritual part of a family, in the case of the street house as a unit of a family group.

The individual room in Taiwan’s environment is actually the room of loneliness. The room heading to campus provides the atmosphere hidden back from the city, while another room makes students feel involved in urban life. The enclosed environment of campus is like the last natural utopian space in the city to invite living room out from two narrow walls. While the tea place is suspended on the top of the sidewalk, it seems like a shelter to observe the city and ourselves.

CIVIC IDENTITY II HISTORICAL CENTER OF THE TOWN Location: Piaseczno, Masovia, Poland Program: Cultural center of municipality 2019

The project has its urban issue, as implementing the pedestrianization of the center, the noise and pollution of private cars would be removed from the road around Rynek. And the new market building would be introduced on the southeast corner with elevated ground floor space. The architectural part focuses on fixing the fractional urban program linking the three public squares, which is now the cultural center of the municipality. The intervention is to enlarge the cultural institution and to integrate with the existing town hall

and the multifunctional auditorium both for government and residents. By the car-free zone setting, the accessibility in the urban phase is provided by the elevated building type with pillars. The block in the center gives the best prefaces to different properties of three public squares. As the sketch shows, the church has the spiritual identity of the town on the north, located on the center of enlarged Rynek, leading the spatial topography.

TRAUMATIC IDEOLOGICAL FICTIONAL INTERVENTION About The Biggest Social Experiment In 20th Century

Location: Beijing, China Program: Paper architecture, Heritage exhibition pavillion 2017 “People who lived on a small alley lived a life that about city planning of Peking which was later in the had not changed for 1000 years.” process of extreme modernization, from the historic royal city of 6 dynasties to the great industrialized That is how life in Peking was described by Lin capital of communist China. Yutang in the 1920s. The scene that had been kept in Peking for 1000 years has finally changed since The ideology of communism makes all the above hapthe 1950s. After a huge project of urban renewal, pen. The modification project of socialism followed the Hutongs (small alley) are broadened to streets the lead of the Soviet Union, which was the exemplary for the military parades. The city wall was demol- country as a ‘socialist big brother’. Peking Exhibiished to be the site of new ring roads. All of this tion Center, which my project aims to renovate, was was similar to the great renewal of Moscow in the the pavilion to exhibit the Soviet socialist prosper1930s. The experts from the Soviet Union prevailed ity. It was built in 1954, out of the gate Xizhimen, in the debate with Liang Sicheng and Chen Zhanxiang as a Stalinist tower.

Exhibition Center

The Peking Exhibition Center was essentially a model that hypostatized the spectre of the Manifesto of Communism. In other words, it defines what the communist society looks like. The Exhibition Center was the first modernized building out of the city wall, with a 104 meters high tower and a red star on the top. On the gate Xizhimen, the newly built white tower could easily be seen. The Exhibition Center was the declaration to the old town of Peking. The newly built district after 1949 would be like the Babel Tower in the Holy Bible, consistent and ordered. It corresponds to the ideology of communism, transcending the languages, building the paradise on the earth.

The tower of Peking Exhibition Center could be perceived as the Babel Tower, as same as the Monument Tower of the Third International (Vladimir Tatlin) and the Palace of Soviet (Boris Iofan). Human beings believe that history has been progressing, but when modernity transcends human nature, it becomes terrifying. People launched a social experiment to implement the Brave New World, the constructivist projects, the Stalinist palaces, and the panel buildings. Finally, it collapsed, proving the failure of the utopian projects, mourning for the victims, mourning for the collapsing Babel Tower, and the tragedies of the human being.

The proposal consists of a chapel and a road to redemption. With some renovations of the Exhibition Center, the west part has been kept while the central and the east part are converted. The area of the water which is a part of the old moat extension has been enlarged for the new monument. After the Soviet-Sino split, the Exhibition Center had lost its original purpose for many years, and the east part of the building was out of use. And thus, the renovation project breaks the symmetric form. The road to the redemption starts from the underground part, extending to the underground of the west part of the building in which there are three separated confession rooms. Between the red tall wall and the building, at the original main entrance hall of the Exhibition Center, a huge red star is glowing. The red star that used to be at the top of the tower, like a lighthouse in the city, is very harsh inside the hall. This is the first glimpse on the sin of the ideology, an intuitive understanding.

The red walls block the facade, separate the exhibition area and the memorial, lowers into water at the end of the road to redemption. The wall beside the monument is silent with the water. On the other side of the wall is the industrial hall, the hall located on the center of the building, could be perceived as a fake church under the worship of scientific socialism. A round water pool is at the end of the hall, which could mirror the

form of an arch, the structure of the hall. The form becomes an entire circle, symbolizing the ideology, nevertheless interrupted by the red wall. The ideology of communism has failed in the fake church, compared with the real chapel on the water. At the end of the red wall, there is a tree on the water. The road to redemption is toward the northwest, the direction of the former socialist “big brother”.

The museum is located on the east of Norway, hundreds of kilometers from the Swedish border, which is aiming for memorizing an ethnical group of Finn people, Skogfinnsk, literally forestry Finn. The main part of ethnic museum was located on the south of the site nowadays, as the milestone of awakenings of ethnicity, today is seeking for the extension of the museum. The new extension contains mostly the permanent and

temporary exhibition space for light objects and artistic work. Café and library are also on the list for serving both the existing part and new part. The main idea of the project is trying to not intervene too much on the landform which elaborates with the small stream on the east of site and the forestry surrounding. The solution is basically to hide the entire exhibition space underground, by combining with the terrain, and keep the independent service such as café and library on the ground floor.

It could keep operating on weekends for local people while the museum is closed. Due to the special condition of the basement building, the ventilation system takes a large amount of space to attach the fresh air and pump into minus two levels. The detailed drawing consists of some crucial points that shows how the technique was integrated with the architectonic issue.
