2011 SEASON REVIEW The Oklahoma State Cowgirl tennis team finished off the 2011 season after unseating No. 73 Missouri in the opening round of the Big 12 Conference tournament to advance to the second round for the sixth-straight season. Sophomore Malika Rose sealed the win after picking up a three-set win over Maria Christensen in the last match of the day.

spanning nearly two months of action. Rose saw time at the third, fourth, fifth and sixth spots in the Cowgirl rotation, going 6-0 in dual play from the No. 5 position. Narattana made her mark on the squad in her first collegiate season with a 21-13 overall record, including a team-high nine conference wins, all from the No. 5 spot.

The Cowgirls faced a stiff challenge in their next dual and fell to top-seeded Baylor 4-2 to finish off the year. Rose and freshman Kanyapat Narattana both earned points for OSU in the defeat. Narattana paired up with senior Nataliya Shatkovskaya to take their match over No. 59 Nina Secerbegovic and Karolina Fililpiak in doubles play, but the Cowgirls couldn’t overcome losses at the top three singles spots.

Shatkovskaya, the Cowgirls’ No. 1 in both singles and doubles play, finished 10-25 in solo action. She leaves the OSU program after an 8-6 dual record with doubles partner Narattana and a 14-11 overall record in 2011. The tandem posted wins over five ranked opponents and advanced to the finals in the Lakewood Ranch Classic in fall action. The pair finished off the regular season with a win over No. 40 Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Alice Radu when the Cowgirls hosted in-state rival Oklahoma.

Rose finished the season with a team-best 16-6 dual record. During the season, she rolled off an 11-match win streak

2011 FALL REVIEW; 2012 PREVIEW The Cowgirls bring a fairly young team into the 2012 spring season. OSU will be led by juniors Malika Rose, C.C. Sardinha and Leyla Simmons. The Cowgirls also return sophomores Kanyapat Narattana and Allison Burckhartt. However, two of the Cowgirls’ biggest stars during the 2011 fall season were newcomers: freshmen Meghan Blevins and Mary Jeremiah. They each tied for the team-lead in singles victories during the fall with seven. Blevins made it to the quarterfinal round of two of three tournaments she competed in during the fall. Jeremiah reeled off three-straight victories at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship to make it to the semifinal match of the consolation bracket. Sardinha also picked up seven singles victories during the fall for OSU, three of which came in the final tournament of the fall, the Lakewood Ranch Classic. After a defeat in the opening round, Sardinha won threestraight, including the consolation final.

The Cowgirls compiled a combined record of 20-16 in doubles play during fall competition. The promising duo of freshmen Blevins and Jeremiah notched a team-high seven doubles victories, including four consecutive wins to begin the USTA/ ITA Central Region Championship before they were defeated in a tightly contested, 9-8 (5) match in the final round. The pairing of Narattana and Rose also proved to be a successful one, as they combined to go 6-2 in fall doubles competition. The pair won three-straight to open up the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship and the Baylor HEB Invitational before losing in the semifinal round of those tournaments. The combo of Sardinha and Simmons, which won five matches during the fall, won four in a row at the Baylor HEB invitational to win the consolation final match.

HEAD COACH CHRIS YOUNG

Chris Young

Young took a program that had never held a national ranking or defeated a ranked opponent and transformed the Shockers into a squad that was ranked for 43-straight weeks and defeated more than 20 ranked opponents under his direction.

Head Coach

The 2008-09 campaign saw Young’s squad post a 21-6 mark

Oklahoma Christian, 2000 and capture its third league title in four seasons. Individually, Career Record: 211-121 (10th year) his players won 65 of their 68 individual matches in MVC action. A native of Norman, Okla., Young has compiled a career record of 211-121, directing the OSU women and the men’s and women’s programs at both Wichita State and his alma mater, Oklahoma Christian.

The fruits of his off-court work began to show as well as the Shockers finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance. The Shockers narrowly missed their third-straight conference title in 2008, finishing the year with a 16-8 mark and a runner-up finish at the MVC Tournament. Young’s third season at WSU proved to be one for the history books as his charges produced a school-record 27-3 mark and became the first MVC squad to win an NCAA

The 2011 Cowgirls finished the season with an 8-16 record; however, the team made it to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship for the second straight year, edging out Missouri before eventually losing to top-seeded Baylor. Young oversaw four Academic All-Big 12 selections in 2011, as well as the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award recipient, Sarah Meghoufel. He also helped the doubles tandem of Kanyapat Narattana and Nataliya Shatkovskaya reach No. 80 in the final rankings of the season. In his first year at OSU, Young led the Cowgirls to a 13-10 finish, their best in three years, and picked up his milestone 200th career coaching win. Young’s coaching prowess was evident as his 2010 Cowgirls reached the quarterfinal of the Big 12 Championship and received several individual accolades. His athletes earned a Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award, a No. 4 singles Big 12 co-championship and a doubles spot on the all-conference team. He also earned his second USTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award in 2010, as he was honored for his work in promoting tennis to the community. During his time in Wichita, Young led the women’s squad to a 94-38 mark, including a 33-6 ledger in Missouri Valley Conference play. A three-time conference coach of the year selection, Young guided the Shockers to league crowns in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Prior to taking over the Shocker program, Young worked as the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Oklahoma Christian University, including a stint as the interim head coach for both programs in 2002. He took charge of the women’s program in 2003 before adding the OC men’s head coaching position to his list of duties the following year.
