COMING IN 2014... OSU Tennis Begins Work on New Facilities
and conditioned air for spectator seating of at least 350. The exterior will feature 12 lighted outdoor tennis courts with two sets of six courts. Grandstand seating will be attached to the indoor center, as well as between the two sets of courts to allow fan viewing of each match being played.
Preliminary work has begun on the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center, located just north of Boone Pickens Stadium at the intersection of McElroy and Washington. Construction of the indoor tennis center is expected to be completed late in the summer of 2013. The Greenwoods provided the lead gift for the multi-faceted tennis project with the remaining funding provided by other private donations.
Michael Greenwood added, “Our goal is to build a worldclass tennis complex that is capable of hosting NCAA tennis events.
“The members of the OSU tennis program have represented our university proudly for many years, both on the tennis courts and in the classroom,” said Anne Greenwood.
The Greenwoods are both OSU alumni. Michael is the founder and Managing Director of Carnegie Capital LLC, a corporate finance advisory firm, and a Trustee of the OSU Foundation, while Anne serves as a community volunteer after retiring from a corporate accounting career with several Fortune 500 companies and is President of Friends of the OSU Library.
“Yet, OSU remains the only Big 12 school without its own tennis facilities, requiring these dedicated student-athletes to often travel to third-party sites outside of Stillwater to practice or host matches. We wanted to show our appreciation for their commitment to OSU by providing the lead funding for these new tennis facilities that are not only needed, but much deserved.” The construction of a 50,000 square-foot indoor tennis center is currently underway. The indoor facility will house six tennis courts and include coaches’ offices, locker rooms, a sports medicine area complete with a hydrotherapy center, 2
“We encourage all OSU alumni to join us in supporting this much needed tennis facility. As part of our lead gift, we are offering a matching program whereby we will match the first $4 million of donor contributions to the construction project.”
Since returning to Stillwater in 2007 after 30 years in Tulsa, the Greenwoods have become active in various philanthropic causes for Oklahoma State University and the Stillwater community. The tennis center was designed by Studio Architecture and Lippert Brothers has been named general contractor for construction of the facility.

“This is a monumental time for the tennis programs at Oklahoma State. We are indebted to the Greenwood family for their generous gift, which will give our teams the ability to train daily and host matches in one of the finest tennis facilities in the country.”
“The new facilities coming to Oklahoma State will give us a huge boost with recruiting. Having one of the top facilities in the nation will help Cowboy tennis for years to come.”

2012 SEASON REVIEW The 2012 season marked the end of one of the most historic eras in Oklahoma State’s proud history of athletic tradition. Longtime men’s tennis coach James Wadley retired after 40 years at the helm of the program, completing his time in Stillwater as the longest-tenured head coach in OSU history, regardless of sport. The Cowboys added seven wins in 2012, including a handful of upsets, to help bring Wadley’s career record to 662-334, a .665 winning percentage. The Cowboys began the season with three-straight victories, including a 4-3 upset against No. 57 UNLV on the Rebels’ home court. OSU opened the year with a 5-2 triumph against UMKC and followed that up by throttling Oral Roberts 7-0 before taking down UNLV. Junior Trevor Horstmann proved to be the difference maker. With the dual tied 3-3, Horstmann found himself in a tightly contested battle at No. 6 singles. Horstmann won the first set of his match in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8), but Willie Sublette of

UNLV responded by taking the second set 6-4. Horstmann regrouped and was able to take the decisive third set, 6-3, to give the Cowboys the thrilling victory. The Cowboys opened the HEB Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas, with a 4-2 first-round upset of No. 73 DePaul. Two weeks later, the Cowboys opened the Hilton Mission Valley San Diego Spring Classic with a 4-3 upset against No. 52 Purdue. OSU would finish fourth in both of those tournaments. Senior Eric West and true freshman Chris Haworth each tied for the team lead with 13 singles victories. West played primarily in the No. 4 spot, going 8-4, but went 5-0 at Nos. 1-3. He defeated Siim Tuus of Liberty, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot, and he recorded a key 6-4, 7-5 win over George Chanturia at No. 2 to help secure the upset of No. 73 DePaul. West’s biggest win of the year came against No. 125 Peerakit Siributwong of Oklahoma. West lead the match 6-4, 1-0, when Siributwong retired. He also scored a huge 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, victory against Diego Galeano of Baylor, which gave the Cowboys a huge burst momentum in a near-upset of the Bears, though OSU fell 4-3. Haworth, a five-star prospect from Oklahoma City, showed promise in his first season, playing mostly at No. 3 singles. He also went 2-0 at No. 4 and 1-1 at No. 2, including a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, victory against Carlin Murray of Louisiana-Lafayette in the No. 2 hole. Haworth tied West for the team-lead in conference singles victories with three, taking down Colin Hoover of No. 25 Texas A&M, Lloyd Glasspool of No. 13 Texas and Rafael Garcia of No. 20 Texas Tech. Senior Vlad Bondarenko played entirely at No. 1 singles, though he did miss a month of competition due to injury. In a span of less than a week, Bondarenko pulled off two upset victories, defeating No. 29 Alexis Klegou of Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-3, as well as No. 83 Japie De Klerk of Tulsa, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 1-0 (4).

2012 SEASON REVIEW/2011-12 RESULTS BREAKDOWN Bondarenko opened the season ranked No. 60, while Haworth was ranked No. 77 and sophomore Rifat Biktyakov came in at No. 89. Biktyakov and Bondarenko also began the year as the nation’s No. 56 doubles pairing and reached as high as No. 46 during the year, as they opened the season with four-straight wins. The duo tied with West and Haworth for the team lead in doubles wins with six a piece. As a team, the Cowboys found themselves ranked in four of the polls released by the ITA during the season, reaching as high as No. 64 in the Feb. 28 edition, coming off of the upset of UNLV.
Though his final season didn’t turn out quite as he had hoped, Wadley still has plenty of other positive memories to think about as he closed the door on the 2012 season and his 40 years of service to OSU. “It’s passed so fast. It’s just amazing how time passes,” Wadley said. “Ninety percent of it was a lot of fun and 10 percent of it has been tough, but it’s been rewarding. I’m really appreciative of Oklahoma State giving me the opportunity to be here and the athletic directors I’ve worked for giving me a chance to stay longer than anyone else in (OSU) history. It’s been a long, good run. It’s been fun.”

The fall of 2012 proved to be a season full of obstacles for the Cowboys, as they competed with only five members, one short of a full team. Despite being shorthanded, the squad recorded a 17-19 singles record and a 2-9 doubles record. Junior Rifat Biktyakov led the team with 7 victories, including a singles championship in the Larry Easley Memorial Classic. Without losing a single set, Biktyakov swept through the tournament with three consecutive victories over opponents from Seminole State College, UNLV and Arizona. Biktyakov also had a strong showing at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships, where he advanced to the third round before losing to Tulsa’s Cliff Marsland, the region’s third overall seed.
senior on the team, the Tulsa native will look to return the squad to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009. Five-star freshman recruit Richard Del Nunzio showed enormous signs of potential with a 5-5 fall singles record and multiple victories over challenging opponents. His solid play earned him a spot alongside Biktyakov as the No. 1 doubles pairing. The two showed major promise in filling the shoes of last year’s fire-powered duo of Biktyakov and Vlad Bondarenko.
Fall 2012 Records Singles
Also returning to the squad is sophomore Chris Haworth, junior Brandon Champagne and senior Trevor Horstmann. Haworth, a five-star recruit out of Oklahoma City, is coming off a stellar freshman season, recording a 13-6 spring singles record. His overall record tied for the team lead in the victories category.

Jay Udwadia
first and only World Team Tennis title championship. During his time with WTT, Udwadia coached five-time grand slam champion, Martina Hingis. He also coached the USTA Boys 18’s National Team Event, representing the NorCal Section.
Head Coach
Arkansas, 1997 Career Record: 145-76 (12th year) Record at OSU: 0-0 (1st year) For the first time in 40 years, the Cowboy tennis prgram will have a new coach at the helm of the program. Jay Udwadia is the man charged with continuing the legacy of Cowboy tennis that long-time coach James Wadley established four decades ago.
Prior to coaching at Drake, Udwadia was the assistant coach at Northwestern for four seasons. While there, he helped lead the Wildcats to a fourth place finish in the Big Ten in 2002 along with a No. 45 national ranking. Northwestern participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2000 and 2002 under Udwadia. Before beginning his career as a college tennis coach, Udwadia spent two years on the ATP Tour, earning 26 ATP doubles points and capturing an ITF doubles title. He competed in tournaments run by the French Tennis Federation, and also played club tennis in Australia.
Udwadia served the past seven seasons as the Fresno State men’s tennis coach, and served one year before that as the head coach at Drake. He has a career record of 145-76, which includes a 2004 Missouri Valley Conference Championship and consecutive Western Athletic Conference titles in 2011 and 2012.
Udwadia, a native of Williamsville, N.Y., was a four-year letterwinner in the highly-competitive Southeastern Conference for the University of Arkansas and was team captain during his senior year. He helped lead the Razorbacks to three NCAA tournament appearances and a spot in the Top 25 of the national rankings. He graduated from Arkansas in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
“It feels great to have this opportunity,” Udwadia said. “Oklahoma State has a great reputation and the athletic department has a great reputation. It feels good to get to be a part of that.”
Udwadia’s Career Records
After beginning his coaching career at Drake in 2004 with a 17-6 season, Udwadia took over the program at Fresno State. He led the Bulldogs from a 10-11 record in his first year to seven consecutive winning seasons from 2006-12. Udwadia took Fresno State to the conference championship match in six of the past seven years and won the league title twice in that span. His teams were consistently well-regarded in the ITA National Rankings, reaching as high as No. 14 last season. Udwadia, who was named the WAC Coach of the Year each of the past two seasons, guided three Bulldogs to WAC Player of the Year honors, including Jakub Cech in 2006, Rudolf Siwy in 2008 and Remi Boutillier in 2012. He guided 12 singles players and 11 doubles tandems to All-WAC honors during his time at FSU.

He also has a propensity for success in the classroom, as his team’s GPA was higher than 3.0 every year of his tenure and several of his athletes received all-conference academic honors. Outside of the collegiate circuit, Udwadia coached the New York Buzz of the World Team Tennis league from 2008-2010. The WTT is a professional tennis league founded by tennis legend Billie Jean King.
