GREENWOOD TENNIS CENTER

COMING IN 2014... OSU Tennis Begins Work on New Facilities Preliminary work has begun on the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center, located just north of Boone Pickens Stadium at the intersection of McElroy and Washington. Construction of the indoor tennis center is expected to be completed late in the summer of 2013. The Greenwoods provided the lead gift for the multi-faceted tennis project with the remaining funding provided by other private donations. “The members of the OSU tennis program have represented our university proudly for many years, both on the tennis courts and in the classroom,” said Anne Greenwood. “Yet, OSU remains the only Big 12 school without its own tennis facilities, requiring these dedicated student-athletes to often travel to third-party sites outside of Stillwater to practice or host matches. We wanted to show our appreciation for their commitment to OSU by providing the lead funding for these new tennis facilities that are not only needed, but much deserved.” The construction of a 50,000 square-foot indoor tennis center is currently underway. The indoor facility will house

six tennis courts and include coaches’ offices, locker rooms, a sports medicine area complete with a hydrotherapy center, and conditioned air for spectator seating of at least 350. The exterior will feature 12 lighted outdoor tennis courts with two sets of six courts. Grandstand seating will be attached to the indoor center, as well as between the two sets of courts to allow fan viewing of each match being played. Michael Greenwood added, “Our goal is to build a worldclass tennis complex that is capable of hosting NCAA tennis events. “We encourage all OSU alumni to join us in supporting this much needed tennis facility. As part of our lead gift, we are offering a matching program whereby we will match the first $4 million of donor contributions to the construction project.” The Greenwoods are both OSU alumni. Michael is the founder and Managing Director of Carnegie Capital LLC, a corporate finance advisory firm, and a Trustee of the OSU Foundation, while Anne serves as a community volunteer after retiring from a corporate accounting career with several Fortune 500 companies and is President of Friends of the OSU Library. Since returning to Stillwater in 2007 after 30 years in Tulsa, the Greenwoods have become active in various philanthropic causes for Oklahoma State University and the Stillwater community.

“This is a monumental time for the tennis programs at Oklahoma State,” Cowgirl Tennis coach Chris Young said. “We are indebted to the Greenwood family for their generous gift, which will give our teams the ability to train daily and host matches in one of the finest tennis facilities in the country.”

The tennis center was designed by Studio Architecture and Lippert Brothers has been named general contractor for construction of the facility.

2012 SEASON REVIEW The Oklahoma State women’s tennis team finished the 2012 season with its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 years and 14th overall along with a No. 41 national ranking. The Cowgirls fell in the first round of the tournament to Georgia Tech, 4-1, with freshman Mary Jeremiah picking up a point for the squad. Unfinished matches at Nos. 1 and 4 kept the competition close as the Cowgirls led at both positions.

Rose finished her year with an 11-9 dual record and a 5-4 conference record in singles. Along with her win against Aeriel Ellis, Rose grabbed another win over a ranked opponent in then-No. 93 Rachel Stuhlmann of Missouri. As OSU’s No. 1 doubles team, Rose and Narattana finished the season as the No. 37 doubles team in the nation. The two recorded a huge 8-6 win over the No. 22 team of Nina Secerbegovic and Ema Burgic.

Securing the bid in the Tuscaloosa Regional for the Cowgirls was a 4-3 win over then-No. 6 Texas, when Malika Rose sealed the match point with a three-set win over No. 30 Aeriel Ellis, making it her biggest career win as well as possibly the biggest win in program history. Not only did she claim the final match point but she and partner, Kanyapat Narattana, decided the doubles point with an 8-4 win as the No. 58 duo in the nation.

Narattana finished her sophomore season playing No. 4 with an 8-9 dual record in singles. The sophomore led the team in conference wins with six. She earned the deciding point against Kansas in a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 win over Dylan Windom.

2012 FALL REVIEW; 2013 PREVIEW Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team goes into the 2013 season looking to make back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances for the first time in over 20 years. The Cowgirls bring a talented and experienced team into the spring season. Seniors Malika Rose and C.C. Sardinha will lead the team in 2013, with junior Kanyapat Narattana and sophomore Meghan Blevins also returning for Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls welcomed a new face into the program this season in freshman Maria Alvarez. Alvarez has already experienced some success in her first collegiate matches during the 2012 fall season, notching an 8-5 record in singles play. The highlight of Alvarez’s fall came at the United States Air Force Academy Invitational when she defeated Julia Jamieson of Illinois to win the tournament’s “Charlie” singles bracket. Blevins also picked up eight singles victories during the fall for OSU, three of which came in her run to the quarterfinals in the ITA Central Regional Championships. Seniors Rose and Sardinha entered their final fall season ranked in the ITA preseason singles rankings. Each would finish the fall with four wins a piece. Narattana competed during fall singles play as well, but unforunately was sidelined in singles competition for much of the season due to injury. The team

finished the fall season with a 24-19 combined record in singles competition. In doubles play, the Cowgirls combined to notch a record of 9-10 this fall. Blevins and Sardinha teamed up to snag a team-high five doubles victories, including three consecutive wins in their run to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Central Regional Championship where they would be narrowly defeated in a 9-7 match. Rose and Narattana entered the fall ranked as the No. 14 doubles team in the nation, according to the ITA preseason rankings. The pair made a run to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships as well before being defeated 8-4. The Cowgirls welcome two new players to the team this spring in sophomores Lorena Gheorge and Karyn Guttormsen.

HEAD COACH CHRIS YOUNG

Chris Young

In his first year at OSU, Young led the Cowgirls to a 13-10 finish, their best in three years, and picked up his milestone 200th career coaching win.

Head Coach

Oklahoma Christian, 2000 Career Record: 222-131 (9th year) Record at OSU: 32-36 (4th year) Chris Young is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Oklahoma State women’s tennis program. After spending five years as the Wichita State Director of Tennis, Young returned three seasons ago to his home state where he competed as a collegian and began his coaching career. A native of Norman, Okla., Young has compiled a career record of 222-131, directing the OSU women and the men’s and women’s programs at both Wichita State and his alma mater, Oklahoma Christian.

Young’s coaching prowess was evident as his 2010 Cowgirls reached the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship and received several individual accolades. His athletes earned a Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award, a No. 4 singles Big 12 co-championship and a doubles spot on the all-conference team. He also earned his second USTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award in 2010, as he was honored for his work in promoting tennis to the community. During his time in Wichita, Young led the women’s squad to a 94-38 mark, including a 33-6 ledger in Missouri Valley Conference play. A three-time conference coach of the year selection, Young guided the Shockers to league crowns in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Those seasons also resulted in the first three NCAA Tournament appearances in school history.

In his third year, Young coached the 2012 Cowgirls to an 11-10 season and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003. His squad finished the season with a No. 41 ranking along with OSU’s No. 1 doubles team of Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana receiving a No. 37 national ranking. The Cowgirl program saw its biggest win ever when the team defeated No. 6 Texas for the fourth time in history. As a result, the Cowgirls received a No. 5 seeding and a spot in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships as well as a bid to the Tuscaloosa Regional in the NCAA Tournament. OSU fell in its first match of each tournament. The Cowgirls’ 2012 conference record of 5-4 is the best since Young took over the program. Under Young’s direction, two Cowgirls received recognition in 2012. C.C. Sardinha was named to the 2012 Academic AllBig 12 tennis team, and Meghan Blevins was named 2012 ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year. The 2011 Cowgirls finished the season with an 8-16 record; however, the team made it to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship for the second straight year, edging out Missouri before eventually losing to top-seeded Baylor. Young oversaw four Academic All-Big 12 selections in 2011, as well as the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award recipient, Sarah Meghoufel. He also helped the doubles tandem of Narattana and Nataliya Shatkovskaya reach No. 80 in the final rankings of the season.

HEAD COACH CHRIS YOUNG Young took a program that had never held a national ranking or defeated a ranked opponent and transformed the Shockers into a squad that was ranked for 43-straight weeks and defeated more than 20 ranked opponents under his direction.

Prior to taking over the Shocker program, Young worked as the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Oklahoma Christian University, including a stint as the interim head coach for both programs in 2002.

The 2008-09 campaign saw Young’s squad post a 21-6 mark and capture its third league title in four seasons. Individually, his players won 65 of their 68 individual matches in MVC action.

He took charge of the women’s program in 2003 before adding the OC men’s head coaching position to his list of duties the following year. The 2003 season also resulted in a national championship on the men’s side.

The fruits of his off-court work began to show as well as the Shockers finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance.

During his time at Oklahoma Christian, the Eagles had 20 players receive NAIA All-America honors, including eight with Young as head coach.

The Shockers narrowly missed their third-straight conference title in 2008, finishing the year with a 16-8 mark and a runnerup finish at the MVC Tournament.

The 2004 season saw Young garner both the men’s and women’s conference coach of the year honors in addition to his recognition as the NAIA Region VI Women’s Coach of the Year.

Young’s third season at WSU proved to be one for the history books as his charges produced a school-record 27-3 mark and became the first MVC squad to win an NCAA Tournament match. The Shockers knocked off 25th-ranked South Carolina in the first round to secure the school’s first NCAA victory. Additionally, the Shockers climbed to No. 16 in the national rankings, making them the highest ranked team in the history of the MVC. Five Shockers earned all-conference honors, including Madina Rakhim, who finished the year with a 29-2 mark at the No. 1 singles position. The Shockers were dominant up and down their lineup, finishing with a 66-1 record in their individual conference matches.

Young’s coaching career got underway in 1999 in Ardmore, Okla., where he served as a teaching pro and assistant coach at Ardmore High School. As a player, Young earned three letters from Oklahoma Christian and helped the Eagles to top-five national finishes in each of his three seasons. A 2000 graduate of Oklahoma Christian, Young and his wife, Sarah, have two children, Braden and Kelsy.

For his efforts, Young was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year. The 2007 campaign also saw him earn the USTA/ITA National Award for Community Service. The 2004-05 campaign, WSU’s first under Young, resulted in immediate progress. The Shockers finished with a 13-13 mark, giving them their highest win total in seven years and providing an indicator of the program’s bright future. Young produced 17 all-conference singles players, nine allleague doubles performers. His squads also emphasized their work in the classroom with 16 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes dotting his rosters. From 2005-08, Young also steered the Shocker men’s program and tallied a 58-38 record. His 2008 squad recorded 19 wins and achieved the program’s highest ranking in 10 years. Individually, he coached nine all-conference singles players, two all-league doubles teams and produced two MVC Scholar-Athlete selections.
