Senior Andrea Robbins NCEA Honorable Mention Equitation Over Fences All-American Team 2 MOP Performances Last Season

The season opener will be a rematch of last year’s NCEA western championship final, when OSU knocked off Kansas State for the 2013 title. The victory gave the Cowgirls their fifth western championship and the first since 2006. OSU is poised for another stellar season, as they return all six All-Americans from last season’s 12-6 squad. AllAmericans included seniors Jenna Blumer, Lauren Halvorson, and Andrea Robbins, and juniors Katy Krshka, Lindsey McMullen and Allison Joyce. They also return four out of the five riders that helped the Cowgirls capture their fourth NCEA western championship. Halvorson looks to wrap up her illustrious career by building upon last season’s 13-5-1 record. Meanwhile, Krshka looks to continue to be the Cowgirls’ dual threat after last season’s combined 34-4 record in horsemanship and reining. In the offseason, the Cowgirls welcomed five newcomers: freshmen Jorden Davis, Maggie Dyrsch and Miranda Reed, sophomore Brenna Brawner, and transfer Brooke Klimek, who transferred to OSU after competing in track and field at the University of Central Oklahoma for two years.

Senior Jenna Blumer 2-time NCEA Reining All-American 7-0 at NCEA National Championships

2013-14 OKLAHOMA STATE EQUESTRIAN GUIDE

THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE - A NATIONAL LEADER

The Big 12 enters its 18th year as it continues to promote the strength and success of one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of second-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. TCU and West Virginia joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. With 10 members, the Big 12 remains as the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule. The Conference’s hard work ethic and strong values have translated to enormous success in its first 17 years. Since it began competition in 1996-97, the league can boast of 52 NCAA team titles and 537 individual national championships. The trophy case added more hardware in 2012-13 as Texas won the NCAA Championship in women’s volleyball and the Oklahoma State men’s cross country team captured its third national title in the last four seasons. Oklahoma State won the Western crown in equestrian while Oklahoma became one of just five programs to capture multiple national championships in softball. The year ended with Kansas hoisting its first NCAA trophy in women’s outdoor track and field. Additionally, the Big 12 picked up 20 individual national titles. Several other sports also made strong national showings a year ago. Big 12 football sent a national-record 90 percent of its teams

to bowl games. Women’s basketball claimed the top position in conference RPI for the sixth consecutive season and was the only league to place 80 percent of its teams in postseason play and 70 percent in the NCAA Championship. Baylor won the Big 12’s first men’s basketball NIT title. Kansas indoor track & field, Oklahoma women’s gymnastics and Oklahoma State wrestling finished as runner-up in their respective national championships. Additionally, Texas joined Oklahoma in the Softball College World Series while K-State and Oklahoma competed in baseball Super Regionals. Individually, Baylor center Brittney Griner earned consensus women’s basketball national player of the year for the second season. Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart was named National Freshman of the Year by two different outlets, while Jeff Withey of Kansas was selected the National Association of Basketball Coaches Defensive Player of the Year. Texas volleyball head coach Jerritt Elliott received American Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year honors. Oklahoma pitcher Keilani Ricketts repeated as the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, giving the Big 12 two of the three all-time multiple winners as former Texas player Cat Osterman earned the award three times. Ricketts also claimed the Honda Award for softball for the second consecutive season. Kansas track & field head coach Stanley Redwine and assistant coach Wayne Pate each earned national accolades as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) awarded the two with outdoor coach of the year honors.

and has had a finalist in 12 of its 17 seasons – the most of any league. Seventeen athletes have earned major individual awards in football in the past five campaigns. Overall, more than 1,400 student-athletes have earned All-America recognition in the past five years alone. Through its first 17 years, the Big 12 has claimed a team national championship in 16 of the sports it sponsors. The Conference ranks second with seven appearances in the BCS National Championship Game and is second with 96 football consensus All-America selections in that time. League squads combined to lead the nation in women’s basketball attendance 13 consecutive years and the Big 12 is the only conference to surpass the one-million mark in season attendance – doing so six times. In men’s basketball, the league is the only conference in the nation where every coach has guided a team to the NCAA Tournament, including six coaches that have led teams to the Final Four. During the last nine years a total of 31 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the Conference, including 16 consecutive seasons. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

The Big 12 lays claim to five Heisman Trophy winners since 1996

THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE - A NATIONAL LEADER National academic accolades have always been strong in the Big 12. Danielle Robinson (Oklahoma) and Sam Acho (Texas) were selected to receive Today’s Top VIII Awards – one of the NCAA’s top honors. It recognizes student-athletes who completed their athletic eligibility during 2010-11 for success on the fields and courts, in the classroom and in the community. In the last two seasons, three studentathletes were recipients of the NCAA Elite 89 Award. That honor showcases individuals who have reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level, while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers. In its short history, the Big 12 has had 537 Academic AllAmerica recipients, averaging more than 30 each season. Big 12 student-athletes have shown commitment to their studies by earning numerous individual academic recognitions. Nine times in the past eight years a league athlete has garnered the top academic honor for their respective sport. The Big 12 had plenty of success overall in the classroom the last four years, as the Conference boasted 80 student-athletes earning Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition through the fall of 2012. The Big 12 can take pride in other stories that combine on and off the field success. Patience Knight (Texas Tech) was the recipient of the Honda Inspiration Award in 2008, given to an outstanding female college athlete who overcomes adversity to excel in her sport. She was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in 2007, but rebounded to win All-Americ

honors at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Oklahoma State women’s basketball was the inaugural recipient of the “Together We R” Team Award in 2012, recognizing programs that have strived to succeed in the face of adversity. Following a devastating tornado south of Oklahoma City just before the Big 12 Baseball Championship in 2013, several league baseball teams along with other student-athletes, coaches and former Conference players contributed help in a variety of ways. Plus, the Conference contributed $200,000 to the relief efforts. Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships. A total of 313 scholars have received near $2.2 million in postgraduate financial aid through the first 17 years of the program. The Big 12 sponsors 23 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball. Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 37 million people. More than 4,200 student-athletes from across the United States and around the World compete annually in the sports sponsored by the Conference. The Conference conducts postseason championships for 20 of its 23 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12 football regular season championship earns the league’s berth into the Bowl Championship Series. In its first 17 years, the Conference has distributed more than $1.8 billion to its member institutions. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

2012-13 EQUESTRIAN SEASON REVIEW

Cowgirls Win NCEA Western Championship Oklahoma State captures its second consecutive Big 12 Championship and its fifth NCEA Western National Title.

Oklahoma State’s equestrian team capped off another spectacular season, winning not only a second consecutive Big 12 Championship but also its fifth National Collegiate Equestrian Association Western National Championship in school history. Coming into the 2012-13 season, the Cowgirls had high hopes after falling just short of another national championship the year before. Led by All-Americans Katy Krshka, Lauren Halvorson, Lindsey McMullen and Jenna Blumer, the Cowgirls would go on to stampede through their competition, finishing the season with an overall record of 17-2 and an average margin of victory of 3.6. Krshka, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla. helped lead the Cowgirls with dominating performances throughout the year. She would finish the season with an overall record of 34-4 (18-1 in horsemanship and 16-3 in reining) and would finish the season with a team high of 13 MOP performances. However, Krshka was not the only Cowgirl to put up remarkable statistics throughout the year. Junior Lauren Halvorson and sophomore Lindsey McMullen would go on to secure 27 additional victories in just 38 events. All three girls were recognized with NCEA First-Team All American Honors. Overall, the horsemanship team would go on to finish the season with a record of 15-4. Krshka would also earn NCEA First-Team All-American honors in reining as well, finishing the season with a team high of six MOP performances. Junior Jenna Blumer would also receive NCEA All-American honors. Blumer finished the season with an overall record of 14-4-1 and 5 MOP’s. Freshman Kaci O’Rourke was also named an Honorable Mention

2013-14 OKLAHOMA STATE EQUESTRIAN GUIDE

EQUESTRIAN HISTORY In 1998 the NCAA declared equestrian as an emerging sport. As of September of 2007, there are nineteen (19) Division 1 and four (4) Division II colleges and universities who participate at the varsity level with new programs being added every year. The average size of current women’s equestrian teams is 46 with a range from 20 to 100 athletes. From the Kentucky Derby, to the Olympics, to the Varsity Equestrian National Championship, equestrian sports are already in the American spotlight. Major national, satellite, and cable corporations already host the sport of equestrian. You can watch horses on NBC, ESPN, Outdoor Life Network, TVG, and College Sports TV to name a few. There are already weekly programs dedicated to the horse, one of which, the American Quarter Horse Association’s “America’s Horse” televises the Varsity Equestrian National Championship, the precursor to the NCAA Championship. To assist in promotion of Varsity Equestrian and to provide a media outlet for disbursement of the current news regarding equestrian, we are proud to announce the development of www.varsityequestrian.com, ‘The Official Web site of NCAA Varsity Equestrian’. Lastly, there are roughly 250 magazines, newspapers and newsletters devoted to horses; many of which already cover collegiate equestrian. In previous years, all collegiate equestrian competitions were conducted under the auspices of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). Since its inaugural year in 2000, Varsity Equestrian has implemented a dual-meet format in competitions. Teams compete in four events: Hunter Seat Equitation Over Fences, Hunter Seat Equitation on the Flat, Western Horsemanship, and Reining. An equal number of riders from each team compete head-tohead on each event on the same set of horses. The lowest score is dropped before computing the team score. Post-season competition: The Varsity Equestrian National Championships has become an annual competition since 2002. This competition will become the NCAA Championship. There are three titles at stake each year: the Overall Team Championship, the Hunt Seat Team Championship, and the Western Team Championship.

Governance of the Sport Varsity Equestrian Steering Committee: The heart of any organization is its people. Besides the outstanding athletes, Equestrian is fortunate to have coaches who give of their time to serve as leaders for the sport. Teamed with athletic administrators, these coaches comprise the Varsity Equestrian Steering Committee. The committee’s charge is to develop procedures, legislation, and advance the sport via promotion and corporate sponsors. An annual meeting of the entire steering committee is held annually at the USEF Headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky. United State Equestrian Federation (USEF): As the National Governing Body for equestrian sport in the United States and of Varsity Equestrian, USEF shares the sport with the world while advocating fairness, excellence and equine welfare in all aspects of horsemanship and competition. USEF sends athletes and teams of the highest caliber to represent our country at home and abroad. Through more than 2,800 recognized competitions in 27 breeds and disciplines, and with 86,000 members USEF continues to grow and acknowledge equestrian athletes at every level. Learn more about USEF at www.usef.org. American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA): With more than 350,000 worldwide members and 4.5 million registered American Quarter Horses in 80 different countries, the American Quarter Horse Association is the world’s largest equine association and a strong supporter of Varsity Equestrian. AQHA offers diverse programs for all types and levels of horse owners, from competitive to recreation. Annually, AQHA approves around 2,900 horse shows and special events that culminate at three different World Championships: the AQHA Youth World Show, the AQHA Open/Amateur World Show and the AQHA Select World Show. In all, over 927,000 entries compete year-round at the AQHA approved shows. Visit www.aqha.com for more information. The Varsity Equestrian Steering Committee is working diligently to advance equestrian from emerging to full championship status. The horse industry stands firmly behind the sport and is working hand-in-hand to lay a solid foundation on which the sport can continue to grow and expand.

EQUESTRIAN HISTORY

In hunt seat equitation and horsemanship events, it is the rider and not the horse that is being judged. The actions of the horse are important only as they reflect on the horsemanship of the rider. Thus it is possible for a rider whose horse “acts up” to be placed among the winners because in the judges’ opinion she met the problem skillfully and solved it. Conversely, a seemingly good ride may mean nothing more than a placed horse carrying an unwitting passenger. The rider is always being judged in horsemanship classes, whether the class calls for jumping or whether it is run “on the flat” without jumps. Judging equitation classes is not done by a mathematical formula. Judges are usually looking for style of riding, accuracy and judgment in the use of the aids (hands, seat and legs), suppleness and lightness of hands and a general impression of complete, quiet control. The program description of equitation classes makes reference to tests for riders in the different classes. This refers to the test of horsemanship that has been established by the American Horse Shows Association for all recognized shows and is published in the annual rulebook. Equitation judges must choose from these individual tests in judging horsemanship. The common criteria are: Posture: The position of the body, the legs, the hands, the head and eyes are all indicators of good horsemanship. The rider’s back should be straight, chest out, head and eyes ahead in an alert, relaxed position. The appearance of the rider should give the impression of alert buoyancy. The movements of her body should be those that derive naturally from the horse’s movements. Correct posture at all gaits and in all movements is a basic element that judges look for in horsemanship. Hands: A rider’s hands should keep a light but certain contact with the mouth of the horse. Reins should be on a straight line from the horse’s mouth to the rider’s elbow. Wrong lead: In a canter, the horse leading with the wrong leg is “on the wrong lead”. Moving clockwise a horse should be leading with his right front leg. Moving counterclockwise, he should lead with the left. Legs: Heels should be down. No excessive weight should be carried on the stirrup irons. Legs should be quiet under the rider at all times. Diagonals: This fault may appear while a rider is posting (rising and sinking back in the saddle in rhythm with the horse’s trot) at the trot. The rider’s movement in posting should be impelled by the forward movement of the horse’s inside rear leg; that is, the rear leg that is closest to the center of the ring.
